The limit of your items is basically due to the amount of storage you can have, essentially, you have 10 strange containers with 50 storage spaces each, exosuit 120, freighter at 120, the 12 starships at 120 each, and then you throw other various containers like food processor on top, once you top all of those out, you cannot carry anymore items
