It would probably clear when you have made too many terrain manipulations on that save, and it has to clear old ones

So maybe find a hole on a random planet and go crazy with the flatten tool

i assume that those edits at the settlement aren't being counted into base edits, so they'd be stored in the non-base terrain edit table, which is limited to 7k, if base edits counted 23k - if less base edits, then that 7k could grow larger. i'm not sure if this is the best way to go about fixing that, because it could create other problems, like being unable to terrain manip outside of bases.

terrain manipulation really is a complex beast, with its fair share of glitches and inconsistencies

i've seen it reported maybe less than a handful of times actually, but have seen the limits tested too, and when at the limit is when things start getting glitchy: some players/saves find that they cannot terrain manip at all anymore until they restore some; while for others it seems to glitch and not care anymore, and continues letting the player do edits, while not storing/or perhaps discarding older ones.

Using the Dream Aerial randomizes class, which is otherwise fixed per system. The Dream Aerial is only used this first time, don't hold on to it: delete it or give it to another player that needs one.

With Anomaly Detectors

After acquiring your first organic frigate, you may now use Anomaly Detectors to acquire more. These are rare drops from blowing up asteroids.

Activate pulse drive (as stated above, use an Anomaly detector before doing so). Keep your pulse drive fueled as this may take some time depending on the system. While pulsing you may see alerts for rare objects or traders, ignore them. The Anomaly detector will be consumed if you exit pulse. Continue pulsing until you receive a Whalesong signal to discover a living frigate with these price ranges:

C-Class: 7,500,000 - 12,500,000 units.
B-Class: 15,000,000 - 25,000,000 units.
A-Class: 26,250,000 - 43,750,000 units.
S-Class: 37,500,000 - 62,500,000 units.

Known Issues:

• If you have a void egg in any of your inventories, its space encounter will keep spamming you, and can prevent you from getting the Whalesong signal encounter. To workaround this bug, retrieve the egg and store it in your suit, then go to space, pulse until hailed by the alien mothership, and select Hatch on the dialog. Ignore the Starbirth mission marker, you can now select any different mission, and return to using anomaly detectors.
• If you begin to notice any odd graphical glitches, stop and pulse in the opposite direction.
  
  Additional Info
  Feeding food to an organic frigate (freighter fleet management terminal > click on an organic frigate), will change its stats. Anything you feed a specific frigate should always reproduce that same result.
  For example:
  Feeding your frigate item A yields one result. Feeding it item B yields another. If you feed it item A again, it will be the same result you got the first time you fed it item A.

Unfortunately, Switch it's not unusual for Nintendo Switch to be an update or two behind other platforms. Which it still is.

Also, I'm unclear, you're trying to play together? Or are you trying to do cross-save?

Nintendo Switch will eventually sync up game versions. But like I mentioned, sadly, it is not unusual for Nintendo Switch to be very slow sync'ing up with other platforms.

We have a command !NmsVersions you can run in #bot-spam which shows the latest known versions on each platform. But unfortunately, we can never predict when Nintendo will get the next update. Sometimes it could be because of Nintendo strict certification process. Maybe a build failed. Or HG is behind fixing a bug or issue.

I do highly recommend reaching out to HG via their Zendesk (link below) to submit suggestions about this type of concern.

Yeah, I'm sorry. It does have multiplayer on Switch 2 which is an awesome addition. It sucks that post big updates, platforms may be out of sync for a while.

Platforms get different updates. When Nintendo Switch gets one to get caught up, there may be no update for Xbox. Also, save versions don't always update to a newer number when a new build rolls out.

Usually when a big update drops we get hot fixes for a while, that means some platforms get out of synch.

But after worst bugs get fixed we get a period with little to no patches and it can last for a bit until next bigger update

It depends on the type of update and when it happens, like I said. After big updates like Beacon, all platforms go through a few iterations of hot-fix rollouts. Nintendo Switch tends to lag behind other platforms, but it doesn't always happen. At some point, all platforms should be sync'ed up for a while till the next big update and its likely hot-fixes.

it runs smoothly then it drops

then it runs smoothly again

So occasional drops in frames are possible
