Hmm, I think the dreadnought encounter is on another spawn method, not sure. I've visited many with no event, unlike the "freighter defense" that triggers reliably after 5 warps and 3 hours playing have elapsed. Note that even for that though, it can happen otherwise too: I had a system where "freighter defense" triggered every 15 minutes or so, with no warping required. Got kind of tiresome.

For the "freighter defense" mission just don't accept the first one or two free ones encountered and the later ones will all be capital type. Otherwise, you can see system vs. capital visually: the interior class and slots you can see from inside the docking bay using the scanner, and is pretty independent of the visual class. (As in, a system freighter may be just as likely to be S-class with big slots rolled as a capital freighter.) Scanning from inside the docking bay saves a lot of time when shopping for freighters.

plus living ships are the cheapest to refuel
