That is why we moved out of Cali. Just be careful when looking for places outside of that state. Flooding is a very real worry, grocery costs is important to look at, and tornado activity. I looked at all of that before purchasing a place. A town just 30 minutes away from another can have 10x as many harsh weather occurrences than the one you chose.

Ohio is a great example of that. The middle and eastern parts of the state get lake effect storms and blizzards a lot more, but the western parts have significantly more tornado touchdowns

So flash floods/blizzards or more tornados, unless you live closer to the southern/southwestern edge of the state

Actually closer to Cincinnatti/Marietta the flooding gets really bad

Moral of the story, don't move to Ohio xD

Every area of the map will have its challenges; I've never been to Cali, but I hear all the time about earthquakes and wildfires and droughts. The middle of the country, as you all are pointing out, has tornadoes to deal with. Here on the East Coast, we have hurricanes and nor'easters (which is basically just a hurricane in the winter). Everyone just adapts to where they live. Here in the east, we'll freak out with a tornado or an earthquake, but won't really pay attention to a hurricane until it's at least a Category 3. I assume that someone in California won't bat an eye at a low-level earthquake, but an East Coaster visiting would probably freak out

This thought comes from not fully understanding what it's even about. The entire idea is games developers have to tell you clearly when a game is a license and approximately how long that license is good for, at the point of purchase, and if they don't and sell it as a product rather than a license, they have to leave the game in a playable state when they're no longer supporting it

It's entirely consumer protection. No they don't have to release SDKs. No they don't have to release a server emu or retool the game to be single player. It's just consumer protection

The entire issue with The Crew that started all of this is that The Crew has a single player mode, but Ubisoft didn't make it clear that their servers were required in order to even play single player. So when they pulled the plug and shut it down, people felt reasonably ripped off

This just aims to prevent that by forcing developers and publishers to make it clear what, exactly, you're spending money on without reading 17 pages of micro-text TOS in full legal-ese

All that's going to change is AAAs won't be releasing as much half-baked slop without either thinking about it or literally saying "this $60 license is only good for 30 days" and watch people not touch it with a 10 foot pole

The 90% of games that don't have this issue won't be affected. In particular it applies to companies like EA, Ubisoft, etc who are notorious for pulling the plug on games without much, if any warning and basically saying "Thanks for the money bro, come back for the next one and remember to pre-order the platinum digital deluxe!"

I mean yeah, it applies to everyone, but everyone isn't doing the scummy anti-consumer stuff they are

Yeah, it's a good conversation to be having. And not just from a consumer perspective, but from a historical one. Like, a lot of game disappearing affects how we can go back and view games from a historical view. There's some really interesting conversations to be had about how games have evolved over time, but if there's a whole generation of games that just vanishes because they don't have support and can't be access, that information becomes more fragmented and bad

I will say from a game dev POV as someone who has worked on a live service game in the past, a game that shut down and is no longer available, it's... a complicated issue. And I honestly have no idea how regulators who barely know anything about the industry would possibly tackle it. Even as someone who is very knowledgeable on the subject, I don't know what a good solution would be.

Most live service games are designed in such a way that they NEED a centralized server infrastructure to function, the game will not run without it. This is not done for malicious reasons, it's done for security. This stops people from being able to easily modify core parts of the game client (like cheating themselves items), it stops people from reverse engineering the game as easily, makes cheating significantly more difficult, etc. Games are built from the ground up with this infrastructure in mind, and when the game shuts down, you can't simply press a button and make it so anyone can easily host servers on their PC, it'd require a complete restructuring of a games core systems to allow players to host it in a dedicated server sort of fashion.

And by definition, if a game is shutting down, it's almost always because it wasn't profitable and the studio is out of money. They aren't exactly in a position to spend months completely restructuring their games core infrastructure just so a niche portion of their players can still boot the game up after it has gone offline. So I can't really think of a very realistic solution that would actually make sense in practice, without severely hindering the security of big live service games.

That said, there are also some games that have no business being structured like a live service in the first place. I know The Crew is constantly brought up in this discussion, and for good reason, it's bizzare to have a singleplayer story based experience "go offline", and I think consumers are rightfully mad about that.

Yeah, it's also about companies removing games from people's libraries and things like that.

I think Live Service games are an interesting point about it, but at the same time, even just leaving things open for players to do what they want can give them enough to keep going. Like look at how much people have managed to keep things like Everquest and City of Heroes going. Even with small communities, people really have a drive to keep their stuff alive, and even just a bit of server structure info can help players do that.

And a big part is the MTX stuff. Like if people spend thousands of dollars on in-game cosmetics and things, just shutting your game off instantly removes those things? That doesn't seem super fair

A lot of those old games weren't built in the way modern games are though, which is part of why they were so easy to reverse engineer and why so many people made illegal third party servers of the games while they were live haha

I think the crux of the issue is that if a game is shutting down, it's probably because it was no longer profitable enough to keep the servers online, and if that's the case... When it's games that were successful like The Crew, yeah I think companies like Ubisoft kinda have an obligation to provide that service to their paying customers, morally speaking. But the vast majority of dead games are ones that flopped. So the question of "how on earth do you regulate this" becomes really complicated.

I've noticed gamers think it's as simple as handing the files over or something, but it really doesn't work like that. Infrastructures like playfab that many modern games are built around do not function unless you continue to pay the hefty subscription fee to microsoft to use them, and when a game is built around that infrastructure, it completely breaks if you take it away

Yeah, fortunately the petition is to get the conversation started and isn't actually a real legislature or anything. I think if the conversation does happen, then that sort of concern can definitely be address in what could actually become the consumer protection law.

I do wonder though. If the players are passionate about to pay the hefty subscription to playfab or whatever other infrastructure the game is built around, should they be allowed to? If the other option is that the game vanishes entirely, I'd argue that would be fine. It's their money at that point.

Kinda late to the party, but the crux of it is regulating so as to let the consumer know if they are buying a license to play the game on the editor's servers, or if the end user actually owns the product.

In the first case, sure, if the product - e.g. an MMO, a MOBA, any live-service game - fails to generate revenue, of course they can shut it down, as long as it was stated clearly when you bought the game, I'm sure everyone signing this initiative knows it, as those games were created with this in mind; after all, there's "service" in the name.

In the second case, another example than The Crew could be any sologame (or with solo content as well as multi) that need you to log in through a proprietary client, be it Ubi, EA, hell even Steam and Epic Games are subject to that. They can charge you full price for a game, and remove it from their library no questions asked (even though Steam also states you're buying a license); where's the protection for the customer in those cases ?

Currently some big editors think they can charge consumers the big price and expect them to think it's like Netflix removing things from their catalogs, which is inherently wrong.

Also to be clear cause I've seen this getting lost in translation when this topic goes around on the internet. What is being censored is not why people are upset, I don't "endorse" the games that got censored. My issue is who is doing the censoring. It's absolutely wild that a payment processor is telling people what they can and can not buy. Unless a purchase is straight up illegal, that shouldn't be any of their business.

If Steam themselves chose to start censoring stuff, I don't think people would be too upset. But the fact that it's Visa and Mastercard stepping in and forcing Steam's hand is really disturbing honestly, and makes me worried for what else might start getting censored in the future. It's not the kind of power these companies should have.

Especially since from what I've heard the group pressuring these companies into this censorship is very anti-art and videogames in general, and they're even pushing to get some really mainstream games like Detroit: Become Human taken off platforms, which is a really scary precedent to set.

And yeah, they specifically want Detriot: Become Human and GTA V taken down for "violence against women" which is another slippery slope because it ambiguously cites "women in traumatic and stressful situations". Does that mean they're going after any game with a female protagonist next?

Yeah it really worries me honestly, I don't think it's right. If people really want to push this kind of ideology on others, it should be done through law, not through abusing monopolistic corporations and using their power to strongarm the consumer.

What I find really odd and have mixed feelings on is the whole slave elf situation, it's a very mixed bag.

There is a 64-bit crc for the section of the file containing blob headers and a separate one for the section of the file containing blob data. Basically, run the CRC algorithm on the entire set of bytes for the header, then separately for the bytes of the data. Both use the same algorithm. Yep, and the CPU itself is very user friendly to replace. They have arrows and the pins are oriented in such a way that you physically can't put it in wrong

Yeah, pretty much all CPU manufactures have a pin 1 situation where if it isn't a notch, one corner of the pins is angled so it won't seat any way but the right way

Yeah, there should be a bracket where the hoses/heat sink attaches, and removing the bracket will let you pop the whole thing off as one unit

Yeah. Start with your motherboard and look up what chips it supports, then from there pick your upgrade option. If it fits your motherboard it should likely fit your cooler

You can use pcpartpicker to make sure everything is compatible and find cheapest pricing usually too

Also don't forget the thermal paste. Some come with a little square pre applied (make sure to remove the protective backing or you'll have a melted plastic situation xD) but just in case get yourself a small tube of thermal paste, like the smallest you can get. You only need a small dab, and even if you end up not needing it you can usually pick it up for less than $5 at your local PC shop/amazon
