I knew that vesktop was overwriting mimeapps.list - it did so every time I started the program, but I couldn't find any mentioned of mimeapps.listin the git repo, and rather than trawling through any of vesktop's dependencies' codebases in the hopes that I find what exactly accesses mimeapps.list, I instead opted to first use auditd to see whether vesktop itself was accessing it (i.e. the problem is in some js code somewhere), or if an external command was being run that accessed it.

That allowed me to see that mimeo was being called, which was in turn being called by xdg-settings.
I then ran strace to confirm this (strace produces a lot of output, possibly several thousand lines per second, so it can be somewhat cumbersome to muddle through, hence why I didn't just do that from the beginning).

Then it was a matter of debugging xdg-settings, which was a fairly quick process, since it was just a couple of lines that caused the issue.

Anyway, that was a fun way to spend an hour or two, it allowed me to learn about auditd.

This isn't a generic ubuntu problem as other applications make actual notifications fine

vesktop just uses electron which uses libnotify on linux. Check which version of libnotify you're using. it may be a bug with libnotify but it might also just be how the unity DE handles on spec notifications

So I've messed around with vesktop --disable-features=AcceleratedVideoEncoder to no apparent success.

To restate my issue: No one can view streams at all it seems. Works fine on the official client, so I'm sure it's related to this if it's that common for others.

Why is this not disabled by default if it's broken no matter what? Is this a recent issue? Streaming worked fine for however long before.

Try checking your default audio device and make sure nothing's muted in the volume mixer. Also, disable "exclusive mode" in your sound settings, run Vesktop as admin, and turn off hardware acceleration in Vesktop. Updating your audio drivers might help too. If nothing works, try using Discord in a browser like Chrome if that works, the issue is likely with Vesktop.

Someone mentioned this before but I couldn't find it elaborated on further - but there was an issue where HW accelerated streams cause viewer connection problems even on official Discord clients (viewer can be on macOS or even Windows).

Quick context: Using Vesktop with 6900 XT + VA-API on mesa-git. Stream works for me but viewers get connection errors or frozen streams. Only fix is disabling hardware encoding.

Questions:
Is this a known Discord/WebRTC/hardware encoding issue? (as in maybe hw accel works but certain hardware is encoding something incorrectly?)
Anyone else experiencing viewer connection problems with HW accel streams?

Tested completely clean Fedora & Arch environments on Gnome and the correct portals etcetc, same issue. Hardware encoding seemingly works fine otherwise for me, but some viewers of the stream are having major issues. I'm just puzzled on where this issue lies really to be able to debug further

If I need to submit a bug report to chromium I can, but might need a little more information from anyone who actually is aware of this issue and has some insight

the other major bug in vestop is when your editing channel settings, it will like edit them back if your not fast enough. sometimes to the point you have to change one perm at a time, change save change save etc. I have looked everywhere I can and I have not seen whats causing it. minor annoyance that I usually resolve by changing perms on the web then using vesktop for the other things

Hi, I seem to be having an issue with screen sharing in Vesktop on Fedora 42. I've used it for a few days now with no issue whatsoever, but last night it randomly decided to start acting up. When I start screen sharing or streaming a game in my server the image quality looks like the following screenshot. Sometimes it sorts itself out after a minute or two and sometimes not. Has anyone expereienced this issue before? I'd like to fix it so I don't have to use the regualar client. I've tried forcing an update as stated [here](#1257026812920205435 message) and reinstalling with no luck.

it probably means Vencord didn’t inject properly. Go to Settings - Vesktop tab, scroll all the way down, and look for a button that says “Install Vencord” or “Repair Vencord” click that, then restart the client. If that doesn’t work, you might be on an older version of Vesktop. Try updating it and repeat the steps.

How to update if you can't update via normal means

Sometimes Vencord might break or crash and make it impossible to update via normal means. Here's how to fix it!

Discord Desktop

Use the Repair button in the installer. You will not lose your Vencord or Plugin settings.

Right click the vesktop tray icon > Update Vencord.
If you don't have a tray, you can run the following script in devtools (ctrl + shift + i, then click on the console tab and paste):

It’s probably not Discord that’s broken because lots of people would notice if it was. Usually, a black screen with just the cursor showing means there’s a problem on your computer, like with your graphics driver, Discord’s hardware acceleration, or the way you’re sharing your screen. VPNs or network stuff usually cause connection problems, not just a black screen. So try turning off hardware acceleration, updating your drivers, running Discord as admin, or sharing your whole screen instead of just one app.

So I just added the wayland socket back to the vencord flatpak and it started working again, mind you I had to remove the wayland socket a while before because it would crash on startup. So electron is just being electron I suppose

for some reason people can't see video on my screenshare. Pipewire does make a video connection with vesktop, i can see my screenshare but people can just hear. Same happen with Goofcord and Legcord, doesn't seem happen with browser or the official client

Hi everyone, I'm trying to share my screen with Vesktop, and in general everything works great. For mst games I select just the game window and the sound from that game app. But today I launched Stardew Valley, and for some reason - it does not show in the audio sources list. How does Vesktop choose which sources can be shared? Why is Stardew suddenly not showing in that list?

Hi, all! I’m a complete Linux noob and am wanting to get Vesktop up and running on my Steam Deck so I can stream games from there. To my surprise, I haven’t found any video or even text tutorial on how to do that, and I’ve also searched known issues and searched key word “steam deck” in the Discord and haven’t found anything relevant. Maybe it’s actually very simple, but I don’t even have the knowledge to know whether it is or not. honestly can't really help with your problem. it's an issue on your end, you can see from the logs that your gpu driver is crashing

make sure you properly followed this and if you did, maybe you could try the Experimental section and see if it fixes it for you

maybe googling some of your errors could bring up a solution

or just run vesktop with disabled hardware acceleration and cope with the laggy animations

At the cost of sounding stupid, I have an issue on windows 10 where if I stream an application a yellow border is put up around the application. Now I have looked up solutions, but I haven't gotten anything to work. Normal discord doesn't have this border, but vesktop does, I assume that the method for screen capture has been changed on vesktop and that's why this is happening. Does anyone have a solution?

I haven't used it no. I think it seems great for if you need to easily copy your setup over to many different PCs (either for servers or if you're managing many PCs for some reason) but atrocious for regular desktop usage because you'll be wasting so much time writing configs for no gain

for easy maintenance, I'd just use a stable distro like fedora or one of the various ubuntu derivatives

probably because they're hevc. you need to get vaapi video hardware decoding working in vesktop to play those, which isn't officially supported on nvidia. there's an unofficial vaapi driver, check arch wiki on Video Hardware decoding, it probably has it (you need vaapi, not anything else)

Why is my Discord laggy?

The most common cause of lag is poorly written CSS.

To see if this is the case for you, try temporarily disabling all themes and your QuickCSS.

yes, disabling AcceleratedVideoDecoder solved the issue

I did also realise that by using flatseal and setting vesktop to wayland it solved the issue as well

There is an issue with the ability to save loaded images; multiple people have reported it, myself included, and it appears to be specific to Vesktop

There is currently no way to save an image other than opening through a browser and saving it that way. This runaround is burdensome and potentially awkward depending on what is loaded on to the main browser.

i reset my laptop today aaaand vencord disappeared from my vesktop cool (first image, my client theme is normally an orange hue and vencord settings is usually below user settings), tried reinstalling but it hit me with this error (second image), uninstalling ALSO hits me with this error (i ended vesktop's task each time i tried)

• vesktop doesnt have working webcam / screenshare transmission (if it works, it takes others minutes to load with error 2012)
• vesktop-bin trades this for no working hardware acceleration instead (causing the same "gradient" issue that someone had yesterday)

Right now I'm running vesktop-bin since I need screenshare to work instantly, but if there's anything that can be done to diagnose the webcam / stream issue on vesktop (since that seems to be more official?) I can provide anything needed. AMD Radeon 9070 XT, vulkan-radeon (radv). First image is vesktop-bin, second is vesktop.

As far as I remember, I also got the screenshare / video issues on flatpak. That was on my laptop running Bazzite though. I'll check out the flatpak and see if it happens here on arch aswell.

Interestingly enough, it seems that hardware acceleration fails if I remove the "socket=x11" permission, making it run on Wayland instead.

i don't know if this could help you, some time ago hardware acceleration on vesktop was broken for me because it was somehow conflicting with my AMD CPU iGPU, i fixed it by disabling the iGPU from the BIOS. if you also have an iGPU you could give it a try.
