Lesson-learned: Don't kneecap your bigboi fancy AFA by only connecting 10Gb interconnects when it supports 25Gb.

Hello! I can’t find the correct rest api endpoint on the netapp cluster to get the cpu statistics. I was not able to figure out the way to covert the cli command as a cli pass through endpoint. I did follow the guide but since the command “qos statistics performance show -node nodename” is quite large couldn’t convey it to a cli passthrough form. Kept failing with 405, api not found error . Is there a better way to get this info through api?

I've heard, sadly, that NetApp got hit by more layoffs last week. Here are some positive thoughts to those folks and hope they land on their feet quickly.

dry herald
#

Afaik just some of the earlier layoffs in Europe took some time to get finalised. I only know based on who I know that got let go

signal phoenix
#

... are customers allowed access to fusion anymore?
I know I had it at one point but after the federation changes it's no more.

turbid hornet
#

Afaik customers never had access to Fusion (or the several predecessors like TRT, SPM, UP and whatnot). These were meant for sizing new systems or for tech refreshes (also to move from 7-Mode to cDOT) and were only accessible by NetApp and partners I think.

signal phoenix
#

I definitely was able to mucky muck around in it before, but I respect not being able to because internal only.

Did you know that Spot by NetApp is giving away a free full-access ticket to INSIGHT 2023 in Las Vegas?
How could you win?

  1. Go listen to Cloud Control the All Things Cloud Ops Podcast from Spot: https://ntap.co/-n65Is
  2. Go to this LinkedIn Post and leave a comment about your biggest take away or new idea that came from the episode: https://ntap.co/-WtWek

When do you need to do it? Between NOW and September 8th at 5 pm Pacific Time.
Why should you? So you can attend INSIGHT 2023 in Las Vegas on our dime and learn from leaders about whats coming next from NetApp to make your data more accessible and resilient while learning about automating your cloud ops for performance and cost, not having to pick one or the other.

So do it today. There are 7 Episodes of Cloud Control, and I think everyone can take SOMETHING away from one of them. (If I do say so myself, as the host of Cloud Control 😉 )

(Prize Winner to be picked on September 11 2023. Airfare, Ground Transport, and Hotel accommodations are not included)

You’ll need some special QSFP cables as well, depending on which HBA you end up going with, but yes it’ll work fine. The important thing is that you get an HBA, and not a raid controller. Or that the raid controller can operate in a passthru HBA-Mode. Most of the LSI 9k cards are perfect for this.

hoary quiver
white kestrel

I do have an interesting question... i'm aware that there's no real support for out of band use cases but, out of curiosity, does netapp put pci device whitelists on their stuff

#

like, would this H610S intentonally restrict a gpu from being initialized

dry herald
dry herald
white kestrel
dry herald
#

no

white kestrel
dry herald
#

afaik even though it's a blue and white text one, it is UEFI? I'm just going by what docs I can find 🙂

white kestrel
#

it's just whatever comes up when i hit delete in post

#

can you provide the official user manual for this thing? i can't find it

#

i'm also guessing the reason why Quanta doesn't have the user manual for it is because this model is specifically made for netapp

dry herald
#

there isn't really one. we provide docs on how to install our OS on there, and some troubleshooting docs on our website, but that's it

#

probably, yes

white kestrel
#

i'd imagine your OS download is behind a service contract requirement so that manual won't be of use to us 😂

#

i'd be curious to play with whatever it is though

dry herald
#

it's a clustering based one, so you need three of them

white kestrel
#

makes sense

dry herald
white kestrel
#

we bout to find out

hoary quiver
#

thank you kindly 🙏

white kestrel
#

that's my biggest rub with a lot of server mfg's is they don't give you easy ways to control the fans

#

Dell is about the only vendor that has a method

#

Quanta has IPMI RAW commands for the previous gen 1U in this lineup but they don't work on this one, probably cause of the netapp-specific ipmi firmware

dry herald
#

what commands are they?

white kestrel
#

ipmitool raw 0x30 0x39 0x01 0x1 0x1 0x3f

hoary quiver
#

thats for the Quanta D51B-2U

white kestrel
#

or another one was something like
ipmitool raw 0x30 0x39 0x01 0x10x1 0x3f
Set BP fan 1 to 63% duty

#

slightly different syntax

#

this format was also recommended and didn't work
ipmitool raw 0x30 0x39 0x01 0x00x 0x03 0x32

dry herald
#

ipmitool sensor list should work

#

to list the temperature sensors/values

white kestrel
#

It does.

#

but apart from that the functions to control any sort of fan response are unknown.

dry herald
#

and it's showing them all at ~9500rpm

white kestrel
#

something like that, yeah

#

a tad over 10k

#

I haven't tried the Supermicro commands yet - their ipmi is also based on the AST2500 so they might be similar

#

but that was more for adjusting at what temp the fans respond, not the fans directly

white kestrel
dry herald
#

try ipmitool raw 0x30 0x39 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x3f

hoary quiver
#

that turned up the fans

white kestrel
#

it returns 00 00

#

oh hey

#

we're getting somewhere

hoary quiver
#

yeaa

#

or turned SOME of the fans up

white kestrel
#

let's see if that was all of em

dry herald
#

that should be the main fan (fan1)

#

main/ whatever is fan1

hoary quiver
#

hes right

dry herald
#

basically third byte should be 0 instead of 1

hoary quiver
#

15000

#

rpms

white kestrel
#

Fan_SYS0_0 and Fan_SYS1_1

#

so, fan 1

#

or technically 0

#

so that's hex

dry herald
#

yeah

white kestrel
#

63

#

so if we want it lower

dry herald
#

try ipmitool raw 0x30 0x39 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x10

white kestrel
#

yep

hoary quiver
#

that worked

#

still some on

white kestrel
#

ok lemme dump this in a bash script rq

#

i'm guessing the last 0x00 is the fan id

dry herald
#

yeah, iterate second last command value to go through fans

#

yep

white kestrel
#

yeah it's at 4800rpm now

#

7 fans

#

moment

dry herald
#

so you're all good? 🙂

white kestrel
#

testing it now

dry herald
#

rgr

#

ipmitool raw 0x30 0x39 0x00 0x00 x x will set fan control to manual, so you'll need to make sure there's a way to ramp up the fans if it gets too hot

white kestrel
#

turns out ipmitool doesn't like being scripted

dry herald
#

otherwise I guess you want to mess with the thresholds from the sensors you can see on ipmi

white kestrel
#

@hoary quiver how's it now

hoary quiver
#

omg its so much quieter

#

HOLY SMOKES

#

hoary quiver

Hello everyone, guys, I have the opportunity to buy this netapp model (H610S 1U) very cheaply, completely new and full of nvme disks. After studying the netapp website, I came to the conclusion that this technology has already reached the end of its life. And now the question is, does netapp have the ability to turn it into a regular nas or use it as an esxi host? There are completely no instructions or attempts to do this on the Internet, at least I haven’t found one.

polar nebula
# hoary quiver true.

Friend, can I ask you how you installed proxmox and what problems other than fan speed did you encounter?

real peak
# polar nebula Hello everyone, guys, I have the opportunity to buy this netapp model (H610S 1U)...

I believe that these are BLOCK devices - not NAS. Your biggest problem, though, is likely to be software licenses. NetApp licenses are typically not transferable and getting a license for an end-of-life piece of hardware could be challenging. Even if you got licenses, you'd still need a server in front of it to mount the block device and serve up NAS.

This is obviously not for production or you wouldn't be buying EOL hardware. Pick up a low-cost Synology Diskstation instead and you'll have NAS and ESXi support...

Where do all these weird product numbers come from 😄
NAJ-0801 seems to be only the chassis. It can be either a simple disk shelf or a FAS25xx, depending on what controller module is inserted. So assuming it is a FAS2554, you can upgrade them just like and other newer model, although they only go up to ONTAP 9.8 (which is pretty recent - last patch was released a week or so ago). You can find documentation on https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/index.html

Tuesday will be my last official day at the Samsung Austin R&D Center - retirement is here! I've been on PTO the past couple of weeks so I'm sort of retired already. I won't be able to post the job posting for my replacement on the job board since I won't be working for SARC any longer and they haven't finalized the posting yet so that would break group rules. Keep a lookout on LinkedIn if you're interested in and qualified for the lead storage admin position for a large on-premise EDA environment (ONTAP + FabricPool plus some other stuff ). Must be fluent in NFS and therefore you should have good Linux skills. Automation skills will help you (there are channels and people here to help you :)).

The position may be posted by Samsung Data Services America (SDSA). I don't know when the posting will go out but probably within the next couple of weeks.

safe ruin
crystal field
# safe ruin I mean getting the latest firmware for them since the firmware i currently have ...

Which bugs are you experiencing? I have successfully installed both Linux and BSD on various HCI nodes in the past and it has always worked fine.
Long story short: Don't think that a new firmware will fix bugs you encounter in homelab usage. They are not tested with nonsupported operating systems and/or PCIe cards, so any bug you have now will almost certainly still be there with newer firmware. If you can, try and locate the firmware from the original manufacturer (SuperMicro in this case)

Im still trying to find a good hypervisor that I can install onto Mac Mini, can manage multiple VMs, and emulate the M1 chip, allowing me to run Ventura.

#

Nevermind, ProxMox cannot emulate M1.

green umbra
#

I just saw something on this the other day

#

If you're running MacOS the hypervisor is all built-in on Apple Silicon, most things are just a front-end for Apple's own stuff. Breaking out of that is hard mode for sure.

#

This allows Apple Silicon to emulate x86/x64 via either rosetta or QEMU, I think. Still need to play more.

ornate blade
#

This costs money, but ten dollars is more palatable on a maybe.

#

I only need to run stuff on M1 chip, no other emulation, we have other machines for that.

green umbra
#

It's free if you manually install from github

#

but you lose the autoupdates the store gives you

ornate blade
#

Ill test it out and if we like it we will probably buy a proper license.

#

I hope it works. Ive tried ESXi (failure, I thought it was just lack of support but instead its just straight missing drivers) Virtualbox (wont recognize input devices) Parallels (wont run more than two) so... yeah. :V

green umbra
#

ESXi can't do any kind of emulation, it'll just expose whatever the host has and in the case of ARM that's still a little unsupported.

#

The 2 VM limit is a part of the new Apple MacOS Hypervisor stack, IIRC.

#

I think that limit goes up if you run it on a Mac Studio or Pro, but I'm no expert.

#

and the limit becomes like 4 or something.

I need a smaller battery to make this work. I got one off amazon but like the JST connector was backwards

#

#notabomb

hidden girder
#

Pretty cool stuff. I assume we will need an NetApp or Insight24 channel

You running anything specific up your way? I'll try to pack my radio when I'm up there

hidden girder
#

My fabulous rig. Took me all of 5 mins to set up.

#

Looking to get a couple T-decks next when they come back in stock.

merry kraken
#

Heltec is nice and small. I need some Wisblock cases. I want to use that radio for a remote/travel node because it’s got like a week battery

#

This one here is a great kit.

#

This node is sitting on my patio in a plastic box right now. It has ran almost 5 days on a single change. I just recharged it like Friday I think

#

The JAYC node is my t-beam

#

The church up on Trent blvd can hit all my nodes easy inside the car no less

#

I’m running 2.3.0 firmware on all my nodes.

hidden girder
#

There's nothing down here. I am looking at the wisblock stuff so I can run a repeater node here on PoE

#

I work off alumni on Wednesdays. So we will see if I can get to your nodes.

mild hazel

The late one!

#

I spent a good part of my 20s and 30s climbing in the RRG

hidden girder
#

Nice, I'm in Richmond

#

@merry kraken I'm on the map now.

merry kraken
#

@hidden girder you are gonna get that msh/US fire hose. My router node is on msh/US/KY

hidden girder
#

Yes. I am. I tried to narrow it like yours.

#

I added too much to the string. Fixed now to msh/US/KY

merry kraken
#

Node info only gets sent like once an hour so it can take a bit to populate

#

My home node looks off line for some reason.

merry kraken
#

I saw your node!

hidden girder
#

i'm not seeing nodes anymore since i changed that root topic to msh/US/KY

merry kraken
#

Yeah you will only see people in the same topic. A few of us were trying to split out by state because when you hit 200 nodes your radio might not be happy and do stuff like crash and boot loop

hidden girder
#

so if i have root topic set, does that limit messages for all channels to that region?

merry kraken
#

topic only matters to MQTT. not lora. But if you set like a channel named 'tacos' it would be msh/US/KY/2/e/tacos

#

LongFast is the primary topic / lora channel

#

msh/US/KY/2/e/LongFast

#

an ideal world, mqtt wouldn't need to be used much since you are meshing around town

#

for a conference, maybe do a router/repeater on a node, then tell everyone the topic

hidden girder
#

yes. mqtt is kinda wild. feels like for your pitch to use it at insight... mqtt would be awesome for everyone on their way in

merry kraken
#

yeah mqtt is like I want to join 2 meshes together

#

or 3

#

or whatever you are trying to do. setup a router/repeater, put that on mqtt, all the clients will mesh with it

#

I wonder of far lora can go through the MGM

#

if you have people in the right spots you could get coverage I bet

#

client -> client -> MQTT -> client -> client -> client

hidden girder
#

900mhz... it'll be hampered by crappy antennas, lots of concrete and interference. if enough people attend with nodes it will overcome the obstacles. if @fresh helm and @fast needle let us toss a few extra nodes in strategic places at the event... it would help. 🙂 put them on the event wifi if they need MQTT

merry kraken
#

there was a use case for meshtastic at burning man. not really the same use case though

#

it's not like you can stick a radio on your RV

fresh helm
#

We'll stick it under the table with contact info so people don't think it's malicious if discovered haha

hidden girder
#

print a (N)etapp logo case for it, put the QR code on it for the NetApp channel

merry kraken
#

the link there guy did a pretty good write up

#

a lot of stuff changed with the firmware and client apps since then. also there is a linux client now also (meshtasticd)

hidden girder
merry kraken
#

Probably want to not replace the primary channel. Otherwise no one can find me

#

Telemetry and gps go out of the primary channel

#

Secondary channels can be whatever tho

hidden girder
#

Yes. Its a secondary channel on mine.

dry herald
#

Today I was reminded - Jeff Bezos and NetApp founder Dave Hitz were college roommates

hidden girder
# merry kraken

I have the channel set to uplink and downlink. They show a cloud beside them and aren't failing anymore.

merry kraken
#

This is the other one I made using that psk

#

Did you clear the primary channel name and set it to default for the key

#

Your node ain’t showing

#

For a while

hidden girder
#

I turned on TLS and it broke it.
I never removed the primary channel LongFast, left it alone. I just created a new one and the psk was auto generated.

merry kraken
#

ah ok

#

maybe buggie since it wants to overwite it :p

#

yeah no need for TLS on the default mqtt server

hidden girder
#

that MQTT server is the wild west

Guys my NCDA will expired soon(two days left)

How can i renewal this?

Should i retake exam? It's hard to foreigner!!

crystal field
#

you can either take the NCDA or go straight to one of the NCIE exams, since those will renew the NCDA

#

the NCDA is not that hard if you have worked with ONTAP for a few months, especially with the time bonus you get as non-native speaker

noble python
#

I don't think, time is an issue for certifications... native-speaker or not... I have never spent more than 50% of the allowed time

mild hazel
#

Tests are writen with non-native speakers in mind. so hopefully it shouldn't be to much of any issue.

crystal field
#

that reminds me about the one time, at Insight, where I arrived at the certification area some 90 minutes or so before it closed, trying to convince the staff that yes, I want to do another certification, and yes, I know that it's one that has 3 hours allotted and I'm confident that I can do it in time and I'm okay with failing if I don't. I think it took 5 minutes or so until they let me take the exam. And I did finish it in slightly over an hour and just in time 😉

#

It was a new certification that apparently only very few people had taken before, IIRC it was the Cloud Architect or Cloud Administrator one... But I remember even Brandi (back when she managed the certification program) was rather surprised that someone managed to finish it so quickly and pass 😄

noble python
#

yeah, I know these discussions... but as long as you could convince Brandi, everything worked out.... I remember asking questions to the pearsson vue guys and getting the same answer several times: "Brandi knows..." 😉

rocky sandal

I was not sold on the bezel with the marble-like finish. But having installed some recently, I gotta say in-person they look good. They stand out in a rack. Used to annoy me pointing to a rack full of ONTAP or E-Series hardware and it was all just dark grey and you couldnt make out a controller or a DS460C shelf. The new look is growing on me.

grey back --> capacity flash
blue back --> performance flash

robust saddle
#

The pillars aren't wide enough for an inventory tag or label, and the left most pillar has electronic protection film for some stupid reason and that can't be seen in normal (crappy) data center lighting and since the rest of the pillars look dirty, I didn't notice the film until labeling a sixteen systems.

#

In the slide above you can see the left most AFF pillar is different, but in crappy data center lighting, no chance

crystal field
#

I don't know, our inventory labels fit quite nicely on those bezels. Much easier than on any random cisco or dell server or even switches 🙂

robust saddle

yeah, so many things don't understand that people need to put labels/tags on them

The Waffle House Index is a metric named after the ubiquitous Southern US restaurant chain Waffle House known for its 24-hour, 365-day service. Since this restaurant always remains open, it has given rise to an informal but useful metric to determine the severity of a storm and the likely scale of assistance required for disaster recovery.
