Take your time, EA for Subnautica always means that the game doesn't really have any proper progression in it and jumping into it now expecting for a whacky adventure might hit the wall preeetty quick and then they lose interest. Seriously though, the Rebreather can wait for a while. I use the compass constantly, but I also use a map mod and turn off waypoints (I prefer navigating with landmarks and direction rather than just following a HUD icon).

Habitat Builder is a must-have for progression passed a certain point, though you can definitely get through most of the game without building a base.

Circling back to my initial snide remark: build all of them. Resources are all over the place, you aren't going to run out of anything on the map (at least not in any sort of normal playthrough. I'm doing a long-haul hardcore run and haven't even started depleting resources).
