When you go away, the game write the batch in the CellsCache of the temporary save folder.

For unloaded batches.

So that when you come back, you retrieve the content of the batch you previously unloaded.

The temporary save folder is continuously overwritten.

When you save, you just move the content of the temporary save to the “real” save folder.

How to do experiments with Chara in the game:

1. build two small aquarium
2. Get a fish what infected with Chara and get a golden peeper (I mean peeper with the enzyme)
3. Put the infected fish in the aquarium and the peeper to the second aquarium

5. Pick the fish from the infected aquarium and put it to the second with the peeper. The peeper will cure it.

It's possible to have them on the side of thrusters (outside reaper territory), but not along the whole side of the hull
