I'm hoping if there is something like that, we could have it be part of invention or engineering type skill where the components in the game are somewhat modular and you can build them up. Maybe along with some physics engine to accomodate a variety of things to occur

And yes, perhaps automation comes from a profession like Engineering, where you ask a player to craft water sprinklers for example on your farm and pay the guy for the work or give him the required mats to do the job with a commission etc

I'm not too fussed about skill requirements to do things, but I do think it would be cool if there was some actual design and implementation decisions that could be made, not just press a button to irrigate farm

Make the type of fiddly automation and crafting stuff optional and not essential. Its cool, and therefore could be cool to do, have, comission for yourself. But if its not your jam, just use a "regular" plot of land and the "basic kit" designed for it, does the job in the way the devs deisgned to be engaging and fun, you relax

those who want to go crazy designing their farm or house could try to do so for asthetic value, or to use pieces of land that may not be nicely flat or square? perhaps there is some tweaking to the routine they want to do for minor gain

Perhaps you are right and it is not so simple to accomodate both, well at least within a reasonable development budget.
Im thinking if you need to grind wheat to flour, you go to a communal windmill.
Engineer next to a river might make their own water mill, might use that same water wheel to provide water to an irrigation system to spread it to the farm, instead of raising it from the well or relying on rain.
If I could see things happening, hear stuff moving through pipes, create nice asthetic waterfalls or whatever it may be, I would be engaged with crafting even without great material incentives

I know it could be a bit far fetched but maybe having a community and then a community(not private) plot close to the river where you can haul your stuff there to process.
The private windmill seems nice too, but maybe would work better if friends would still be able to use these too.

Yeah, I was kind of refering to the game pre-made skeleton of a town or assets that spawn naturally by the grace of the NPC's as those communal assets. I imagine there would also be player made communal assets created, managed and use-authorized in neighbourhoods

Maybe adding the hauled wheat as a job to the current mill where jobs can be processed one after another or just after some time.
Using that time you can either just chill there or spend the time doing other productive things.
