I've suggested similar for other MMOs I play. A good way to increase awareness of the primary game, get a cut of the mobile market, and give people a low-intensity mobile option for those times when they can't be at the computer.

I can understand that, but imagine if you could just take the fishing aspect of Palia with you and doot around with it while waiting in a doctor's lobby or while traveling on a plane. There's certainly an enticing aspect to mobile games as timekillers that isn't purely money motivated.

Money and getting attention is how games like Palia pay devs. there has to be some allowance for it. There's some overflow that can be done but it depends really on the product and how it's structured and coded.

i do hope that palia avoids the pitfalls of, say, shroud of the avatar. it was very ambitious and the housing systems showed a lot of promise, but i think they dug in too deep on housing.

Realistically all it takes is a tiny little push to go off the deep end. No idea what the financial situation is or how much % of shares investors hold (if any) but as soon as any group small enough to hold a majority opinion wants something done stuff can go downhill really quick

And the Palia teams are much more open transparent and human than blizz was at that time.

WoW is really old now though, almost every major game has fallen prey to similar stuff. Don't even know if I could name all the games in the last 3 years that have met a similar fate/ending

You didn't really miss out on much unless you liked more difficult gameplay. Their unwillingness to remove all the need of keys and reduce the difficulty eventually lead to it's demise. It was a weird game because it had the best casual content. (Housing) I have ever seen, but so much of everything was dependant on the less enjoyable "Hardcore" content.

I feel bad for chiming in with off topic stuff but it would be pretty sweet if there is a type of group content that guilds can complete to show off in their neighborhoods and stuff like that.

yeah but I remember it pretty well. Verant was one of the few that started off bad, but I think that was the culture of the time. Almost every small studio takes time as well as success to get problems showing up, and I'd prefer not to be shooting the horse before I even buy it.

For the moment, Palia seems to be the product of devs who are tired of the same old practices of previous MMOs. They want to take what worked and what was liked and try new approaches to what was bad and disliked - or leave them out entirely if they can.

I really liked the way the game was advertised too. Those little short animations they did leading up to game release was amazing. Nothing would give me more joy if this team did the same thing. It really made you feel like you was part of the world before it was even out.

Yeah thats big facts but if there ends up being some type of dungeon system I say we do what FFxiv did in which they said forget damage counters and what not. It doesnt seem like there will be, but avoiding min maxing seems to keep toxic people out of the game.

It's typical that alphas have NDAs, some betas too, though that's less common since betas has become more like early release.

only the devs can really answer that but it's fairly normal for NDA's to be for the entire duration of an Alpha, some streamers may on occasions get direct permission to show specific parts but that is always something you need to work out with them. And that typically doesn't happen in games until around a beta phase.

Pre-alphas are not all that common in the industry. More established studios tend to have an existing player base they can bring in for this early of a look at a game. But as @low goblet mentioned, NDAs are common both for Alpha and earlier stages.

I imagine it's a block feature that just removes them physically from your screen, items and all, and prevents them from messaging/interacting with you. If there's a market system, it likely wouldn't be attached to specific players, so you wouldn't see the name of the person, just the item for sale and its price.

Right, and I'll use GW2 as an example because it fits. In that game, let's say there's a tree. If someone else runs up to it, you'll see them swinging an axe, but the tree will be fine. Then when you run up to it, you swing your axe, but on your screen the tree falls down (and stays down until its respawn timer clicks over). So I'm wondering if Palia's resources will work similarly.

Yea, you mentioned something on lines of resources are player made and not purchasable from vendors. Well, the game is marketed as an MMO that you can also play alone if you wish to.
If you're looking for a specific example, i don't know how familiar you are with Arcage, an asian mmo that wanted to go in a completely sandbox direction and it backfired. Resources got scarce and newer players that joined were instantly behind, I think new world had the same problem at the start.
What i'm trying to say is, if most things are on the hands of the community it becomes a somewhat of a sandbox experience and todays gamers in general are just different and that system tends to not work as well. Sorry if I rambled and this didn't make any sense 🙂

I feel like we have a pretty unique approach to how we want to handle the transfer of items between players but it's in early stages so we're not quite ready to talk about it.
Game economy will exist! We aren't sharing a lot about this now but it'll be clear when people get their hands on the alpha
