A lot of people will leave this game at release, but it will likely be for all the usual reasons. They won't like the graphics or they'll naturally lose interest, or they'll have expected PvP or something else that isn't included. But that'll be okay, because the people who want what Palia offers will stay and word will spread rapidly that there's a chill option in the MMO market.

Please keep in mind pre-alpha, alpha and beta are for testing purposes. If you're looking to jump in the game and just have fun and play it, you may get bored and run out of things to do. Things are not gonna be finished, features are not gonna be implemented.
We don't know how the pre-alpha is gonna work, it may be that only one feature be available for testing at any given time

I wouldn't be to worried here honestly. While we do see a lot of Cancel Culture and how harsh a Community can be if expectations are not met (see Cyberpunk 2077) we also have some beautiful examples where Games failed at first but are now really good and popular among players because Devs and Players didn't give up on the Project (Final Fantasy 14, No Man's Sky). And with the Power of Influencers (Twitch, YouTube), even if the Game has an unsatisfying Start, with just a few of the bigger ones recommending it once it's good and playable, the wheel can still be turned around.

But honestly, I just want to believe that nothing like that will even have to happen in the first place because we just got a beautiful, social and patient Community here. 🙂

Maybe they'll have 'energy' instead of HP, so if you're hunting or fighting a thing, you run out of steam and have to exit combat to rest for a while. I do imagine there'll be some sort of fantasy combat element, it just won't be the main event of the game.

Theoretically it wouldn't be too hard .. a simplified form of DNA can be incorporated .. say 5 pairs of chromosomes ( instead of 23 ) with say a total of 50 or even less dna elements that define various factors that are transferable. But seeing as the children are based on the player and player/npc partner. Perhaps at the character creation stage you can place x amount of DNA points in certain DNA elements which are then used to influence your gameplay. Kinda like skill points in action games. These DNA elements can then be 50/50 chosen between the parents and the one chosen becomes the childs set of chromosomes. Which will then affect their actions/reactions on the world and any future gemerations ( if that was to become a thing - obviously with limitations .. say one child at a time and that child is replaced with a grandchild etc and the parent of said child 'moves away leaving their child with the grandparents'. Or some such thing. I've been waiting for a game that does something similar to this for a long time. But, maybe something similar to Sims is the next best thing with a random button for a choice.

Guild Wars 2 has a 'mystic forge' which is basically a universal crafting table. It can be used to craft, upgrade, and convert items, has a random chance to provide extremely rare items, and is useful for people who wind up with an excess of certain items. They also occasionally add secret recipes to the forge that the community figures out and shares around, so that's a nice element of surprise too.

Not sure how I'd want that implemented in a game like Palia, but I enjoy the spirit of it.

I'm an altoholic .. but thats usually because of the different options of gameplay in some of these games. When I played Sims Online .. 1 character was fine as I was playing me .. my house was my storage .. it just grew in size rofl. But .. I did that with Star Wars Galaxies each character specialised in an area so depending on my mood I played the appropriate character.

Honestly, Palia is a perfect recipe for a lot of people right now. It's relaxing, undemanding, beautiful and relatively free of conflict. With how things are, a lot of people could use that.

You don't need a seperate texture at all. All you need for moving flowers is proper boning in them for flexibility.

Going full-ham with customization would be a good idea, I think. It extends the lifespan of a feature when the same thing can be done in a variety of ways. Sort of like if fishing only had a pool of 10 fish versus a pool of 100 fish with new ones being added or rotated on occasion.

A lot of customization for models can be pretty simple palette swaps. With basic tech now for rendering you can even do texture overlays on palette swaps and make standard models look very different.

I mean talking from a coding perspective it would take a little bit to get the framework in place but once it's there it would be super easy to play with pieces to make countless amounts of unique fish with different timings, requirements, etc. It just requires a lot of foresight and planning

The biggest thing is when you change the silhouettes of models...sometimes that requires more work, because the physics need to be reassigned (like the bounce of a larger belly or when/how clothes drape)-but some cleve shading use of textures can make the same silhouette look very different.

Most time a game like palia will have a number of pieces that are used to build other things.

It's common for any animator to have a library of small items for a project like bottles, walls, flowers, trees, etc etc. Pieces you can throw together in combination to make new scenes, settings or even objects. And usually there's also a texture and art library that does the same thing.

I mean you could technically even have things like fish heads/fins/tails so you could mix and match pieces before it even gets textures or painted shading or details.

It depends in the end-for weather systems-on how the graphics adjustments are coded in. SWTOR did a terrible thing by layering theirs, which cause all kinds of weird visual glitches and bloat...but it's the only game I know of that did things quite that way.

I've seen cases where they do a little indicator by the minimap for weather, and for people with l,ower graphics, they may not see rain, but the skybox darkens and turns grey, while the indicator will show a "rain" icon.

Oh I understand, I'm just saying it's something to keep in mind. If there is weather the sys requirements might be a little higher then a toaster. You might have to play it on your microwave instead.

You render the models-you create the models in the 3d program.

Then there's a lot of other work of polishing and refining to make it efficient and then you put it into the prog ram that is the game people will play.

Models are also knows as "renders"
