yeah, basically there were more than a few people who logged on daily, did everything they could during the winterlights event, and still couldn't get everything they wanted by the time the event ended because RNG screwed them over with no pity mechanics in place to address instances of bad luck
And it's breeding a stressful experience for... what, player retention? Keeping people desperately logging on every day in the hopes that today might be the day, only for it to... not be, and then shutting the door in their face and saying "better luck next year maybe, assuming the items even return"

Very traditional model for games, especially MMORPG's. Though, this game is supposed to be different than that - Cozy, yea yea, I like that, it's why I am here even though I really really love combat and dungeons. Trying to get those perfect drops always add stress, which is normal for other games but maybe not the direction they would actually want to take here. Some games adopt the idea that if you randomly get an item like a chest, you get a small amount of a currency (like the tickets) you can use to buy the missing items you had bad luck with. That might be nice

that way even if you don't get the pull you want, you know you are still working towards getting those missed items

And the character is only available for a short time, so to get it you have to dump money over and over

I know that Palia only really said "we won't do FOMO" in regards to monetization but I was hoping that with their focus on "cozy" they would avoid abusing FOMO mechanics elsewhere in the game too, but alas
I think that's what stings most for a lot of people, hearing that Palia is supposed to be different, only to wind up seeing the exact same stressful crap they left other games for cropping up in a game that advertises itself as trying to avoid stress.... at least, avoiding stress is how I interpret "cozy", but maybe S6 interprets it more along the lines of just "you can befriend everyone and nothing is out to get you", idk

Yeah, I think Cozy really is just a word and can have a lot of meanings. For me, I see it as a lack of combat, dungeons or competitive play. We all just go out, do stuff, make things happen. Even hotpot as a game wasn't competitive, you played with everyone and the better everyone does the more stuff you get for it.

I'd say that "nothing/very very little is out to get you" is certainly part of what "cosy" means... (I'm not yet convinced the water is not out to get us...)

I really dislike the way Palia has gone about designing the game as multiplayer tbh
It feels like they kept all the multiplayer aspects that makes people upset at each other (read: 'competitive' nodes') and failed to include any aspects that make multiplayer MMOs fun to play with others
Cake parties are the most social activity there is right now, it feels like, and the reason why it stands out above the rest is because cooking is basically the only activity where you can actually pool resources together with other players

With all the other activities, the best you can do is just... chop a tree at the same time as someone else, and both players collect their share for themselves. Call out a node you gathered for yourself, so someone else can gather that node for themselves.
I know people are against trading 'because botting' but some of the most fun I've had in multiplayer games is when a group of people I play with decides "let's all help this person get this thing!" and pooling resources together. Palia doesn't have that, because the request system is beyond awful lmao

Delayed, but yes, this. I honestly thought there wont' be any "FOMO". I don't mind too much in regards to events (since they said it'll come back), but ... from what i understand, the twitch drops they did for the palcat stuff, and things like that... you can't get those items if you missed them, right?

That's FOMO. And it sucks. I don't mind too much, but i know there will be people who'll come to the game later, and will miss out on those because those things will be gone and it's a bit upsetting. Same goes for the switch regard w/ the Red Frog Bucket thing.

And that part is either some people don't have a switch, or they didnt know it was a thing if they were to get into the game later on.

the lack of dungeons/fighting/etc has never been what a "cozy game" is about (sdv, rune factory, etc). nor is lack of fomo as far as multiplayer games go bcos that's how most mmos make money including palia at this point.

i find the term "cozy game" v unhelpful nowadays and only use it when im referring to the community surrounding these games, games that range from typical rpgs w farming to visual novels to animal crossing 😭

Yeah, I completely understand that. I struggle with the term "cozy game" as well sometimes. I'll look at the reddit and stuff to get game ideas/suggestions, and decide for myself from there if I'd label it as such for myself.

It can be difficult, haha. I usually put "cozy game" as well with like... cute graphics in my view. (Like uh.. Lil Gator Game, Paradise Marsh, Slime Rancher), but also has some very basic mechanics for me to process/understand, so I can just auto pilot.

But on the flip side ... I also find Dead by Daylight to be a very cosy/comfy game for me and 99% of people would disagree with me on that LMFAO

I just end up doing a deep dive on the cosy game, videos/screenshots and then try to figure out myself. I had someone gift me a game they thought was cosy and up my alley bc of that, and unfortunately it just... wasn't for me. "Cosy" can just be so different from person to person!!!

I found the game Celeste to be challenging as hell, but I count it as "cozy" because it does not make a huge deal if you mess up and 'die'.
The game is designed with the expectation that you're going to mess up. A lot. And is basically saying "this is difficult, but you can do this!" the entire way

I totally understand the FOMO too. I used to play Elder Scrolls Online/ESO for YEARS. Until I just idk I got burned out and stopped caring about it. I knew I was done with the game for awhile when events were happening and I didn't log in.

Palia, I started to reel back a bit since I reached my goal to start romancing Hodari 😂. I hope that they add more quests, story, and other things that we can do with other people like the hotpot game (although I'm a loser who plays solo Lol).

ohhh yeah, my favorite farming system so far has been rune factory 4/5 (its the same system 99% of the time) and some of the HM/SoS games too, but they vary a lot for sure. i think the original Story of Seasons had my favorite system.

i dont necessarily need it to be likeeee insanely complex, like one wrong move and ur plants wilt, i just like having more to quality than just use a quality fertilizer once, yk?

FOMO is a powerful player retention tactic which is why so many companies like to push it into their games, but the Fear of Missing Out only has power as long as the player can avoid missing out
If they've already missed out, due to a hiatus or something... the fact that they've missed out on a bunch of things can actually deter them from wanting to return, or in some cases, even start playing at all

I love rune factory 4 so much And I played so much HM/SOS back when farming genres wasn't so big

One of the most unique systems was A Wonderful Life, because cows didn't automatically give milk and kid me learned for the first time that you had to basically do more with them to have milk that won't last more than a certain period

So some of us were having a chat yesterday about whether or not trees respawn on our plot. It doesn't respawn as much as you suddenly get saplings. I found three on my plot and they are the same across all the 5 plots I own. Screenshot 1 and 2 are from my Restaurant plot. The overhead view is from my Home plot, where you can just see all three in the very back.

So the answer is yes, but at the rate of a RL tree. I chopped and mined everything shortly after open beta started, if you want a timeline.

I could see it being Einhar. Galdur that would blend in perfectly in Bahari City since it has been mentioned that they're quite common there. Has lived for hundreds of thousands of years. He says he finds oneness in all things, but that could be a cover.

Part of it is that we actually want critical feedback in the form of ModMail. We're not just saying it to be like... pompous, or condescending. We actually do take feedback and discuss it with other mods / the admin team, making sure to involve them since not everyone is present at the time people bring up their problems. 14. Grind for gold for Zeki Coins to try to get everything out of Zeki's machine
15. Grid for gold to get all the items from the Underground
16. Play Heavy Metal Chapaa
17. Attempt to conquer The Tower
18. Go to cooking parties or otherwise enjoy the game as a sim with other players

Im a big Guild Wars 2 player. Yes some of the things im working towards are purely based on what I want (like fashion!) but the majority of things I do in it are gradually working towards larger goals that progress my overall account.

• Achievement points (and rewards from hitting milestones)
• Masteries and the mechanical benefits that come from them
• upgrading to the best gear I can
• gathering materials which I can use to either create QOL stuff or things to make challenging stuff easier
• Finishing story stuff as it comes out

There's a lot more but all that stuff impacts my account in material or aesthetic ways. Stuff thats gonna impact how I interact with the game.
Where as things like fashion, or just getting better at the game, are stuff I place my own meaning into. I think you need more of the former to really hook most players in for extended periods of time like MMOs are designed to.

worth noting that this is the first game i've been decent at and that kept my attention for more than like a week (started back in summer... 2021?) - like before this it was ps2 and wii games that stuck for a year or two. (I blame motion sickness, poor coordination/reflexes, and being a character babysitter at lan parties in the 90s when i was like 6 against my will - i never want to play any doom or quake ever thanks). Progression to me would be something like at a certain mining level, you can unlock an area to be able to get Palium faster for example. So much of the end game is just for building and they don't have any real way to reward players for putting time into a skill while the furniture requirements imcrease.

But there seems to be a resistance to tying too much to levels.

I think making repetitive tasks not a chore is a big thing that a lot of MMOs struggle with. A lot end up relying on creating FOMO to maintain or draw back players. WoW is the king of this, with how the previous expansions become basically irrelevant and you end up with 90% of the player base cramming themselves into the new zones and main cities. It leaves a massive majority of the actual game completely empty.

(Which is why I like GW2 because horizontal progression means that everything is relevant in some way, and leads to a much fuller world. It also doesnt punish you for taking breaks.)

After you get palium tools, there is basically nothing to do with the rare materials you can find except for making/obtaining home decor, it feels like

Like... yeah, it's great for the decorators, but people who want a sense of progression, or people who want to earn cool cosmetics, etc.... they don't really have anything to work towards. Achievement hunters don't even get a flair or title or whatever they can show off, the only way to show off any of your achievements is to friend someone and invite them to your plot, assuming they even want to take the time to visit

like... one of the things I really love about a lot of MMOs is when you're just starting out and you see someone that looks REALLY COOL and you're like "woah that person looks amazing! They must be a really high level/skilled player... I want to look like that too, where/when can I earn a cool outfit like that?"
But there is zero sense of wonder once you learn that none of the outfits are earned. The only thing that exists are paywalled outfits, paywalled gliders, paywalled pets.... and if you're f2p you never get to wear a non-default outfit. You could be the highest level player in the entire game but you have nothing to visually show for it, you'd still be stuck in the exact same clothes you started with

tbh it's a pain getting enough seeds to plant trees if you keep making mistakes or not liking how it looks. with the tree growth system it might be difficult to tell whether a tree will look good where you've placed it until it's fully grown, which is quite a big time investment. i'd much prefer if they were movable

I ended up clearing all the trees and rocks from the active space in my lot (idk if there’s any outside that space that I can remove - I like the nature clutter so I’ve left them) so I could build out a big property (house, workshop, and museum) but have been missing the nature now that I’m done layout out my buildings. That’s why I worry that it doesn’t say it’s in beta. I’m on Switch and I know it runs worse there than on PC. But PC still has a lot of the same issues. Instead of wondering why the game is so buggy in release they’d expect bugs if it says beta.

Steam reviewers are very harsh towards buggy games that don't have the Steam "Early Access" banner.

It's a very confusing business decision to try to pad player count as fast as possible while tanking good will and reviews, especially in a game where the base game is free and only happy players spend money for cosmetics. If they sell, I wonder if microtransactions will be rebalanced!

I'm thinking one of the reasons they don't want to add the beta label or early release labels is some people may play, but not want to put any money into the game since it's still in beta. A very solid reason in general. These releases on new platforms bring in lots of new players who get to enter into Palia's honeymoon period, the early stages of the game with lots of things to do and experience fewer bugs or glitches. I'm taking a guess to say these new honeymooners all happy and enthralled with the game are more likely to shell out some big $$$ to get a fancy sparkly outfit or two in their first weeks or month of play.

I started Palia with a community of 25. Out of those fewer than 5 have come back to play since around Novemeber or December. Some have checked in for the events but they don't stay long. Pretty much I'm the only remaining full timer and one other person is a regular part time player.

I really can't help but feel like investors strong-armed them into releasing by a certain date tbh
I saw a reddit post speculating that perhaps one of the investors was like "okay we'll help fund you but we want a full release on switch by this date" and that might be the reason for all the beta-scrubbing we've been seeing since then, but who knows 🤷

I've said it before, but making the entirety of cosmetics paid or promotional only with no earnable options is really hurting not only player sentiment, but also the game's overall reward structure
Every single thing revolves around furniture as the reward. Even maxing out relationships and whatnot... what do you get for those? A portrait or something. Furniture. So what is there for people who don't enjoy the home decor aspect? Nothing, really.

I'm on the side that it created a sense of urgency and possibility of missing out, so even if it wasn't intended to be fomo, it was. Same with the Twitch drops, personally they should just have twitch drop cycles of the past rewards (pal cat stuff)

The event stuff I'm kinda eh on, but only because they will come back; however, I do know the feeling of still wanting (and feeling like a need even) of collecting everything from an event in that short period of time. But when it's things that definitely doesn't seem like it will ever come back (twitch drops, or the linking with the switch, which was a limited time thing)... that's where I have an issue.

Steam is also notoriously terrible for any online/MMO style game (esp anything with its own sub launcher), so not sure it'll be that loved. It's also not one of Steam's main genres.

Also, counter point to your argument -- despite its flaws, the game is still more polished than most online-games released nowadays. It's just the state of the industry, since games no longer are tied to the version they shipped with. (Think PS2 discs.)

Steam review bombing is just another part of that, if it does happen.

I feel like S6 saying " you won’t...be overly pressured by the fear of missing out (FOMO) to get that one item you wanted before it leaves a continuously rotating store" is somewhat misleading. I realize that statement refers to their monetization saying there won't be FOMO because there won't be limited time premium $ clothes but I think many players have taken it to mean there won't be FOMO or any FOMO clothes in the game. Games like this need FOMO (and a lot of it) to keep players coming back and if they come back that's more opportunites for them to spend money on clothes. I don't know if promises were made elsewhere there would be no FOMO in gameplay.

I knew the "no FOMO" promise was basically entirely about monetization, but I was hoping that they wouldn't go the route of "one time ever promotional items" being the only source of non-paid cosmetics.
I very much detest the idea of a game saying "we won't give you any cosmetics unless you pay for them..... unlesssssss you pump up our visibility and player count metrics for us, then we might give you some glasses or something"
If the game was good I'd be recommending it to all my friends without the need of FOMO incentives. But a lot of decisions they've made have had the opposite effect, where I'm warning people to steer clear until they start being more player-friendly. (transparency, accessibility, etc)

No I definitely get it, but the main complaint was not knowing when it would return and how hard it was to get the tokens until they made it easier towards the end of the event. It made it very not fun originally.

Aka the whole competition aspect and the only way to get tokens was from the solo-points chapaa chase. It being shared made it way way more bearable.
