From what I've heard, Steam has much better controller support than Epic (for all games, not just Palia), so it may be worth switching to Steam. Sometimes you have to tweak the controller settings/layout as you mentioned, but I was able to get a controller to work via Steam a while back. I just don't know anything about Epic either unfortunately :/

This is because Steam has the ability to translate controller inputs to KB/M inputs or inputs of a different controller.
Palia already supports Xbox and PS controllers, so it should be fine
