But we're not like Star Citizen. The playtests are gated/closed, not open to everyone. (And you have to pay to play Star Citizen - either a monthly or yearly sub.)

And we select folks for each playtest based on criteria and things we need to get feedback on. So the same folks don't return for every playtest.

Actually has nothing to do with EA and all to do with Sony lol PS4 wasn’t backwards compatible with PS3 and porting games from PS3 to 4 isn’t worth the hassle and time it takes to do it so a lot of games didn’t make it over. Now, PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4. However, no skate game made it to PS4 so 🙃

Re: hearing negative things.
What’s officially been shared - earlier in the dev cycle than .. almost any other game EA has published - is factual. Anything else is speculation based on negative experiences in the past that give bias towards an opinion. Nothing more.

We have a lot of work to do to show y’all the details of the game, while building it.

And I’ve said this before to others and I absolutely mean it, I’m not going to try to convince you. We have to show you, then you can make the most informed judgment. Currently, no one has all the info (outside of the team, of course) and so it naturally leads to a lot of speculation.

All I ask of anyone - give us a chance to prove it - and give us constructive feedback along the way. That’s why we’re here so early, why we’re doing playtests so early. When you get invited, give really good feedback in the appropriate feedback channels for playtesting. Tell us what works, what doesn’t - and share your ideas on how to make it better.

And I’m very glad you’re here to share your thoughts.

Honestly, the best Drain Gang song is pearl fountain. I know it's not the most emotional, or the hardest, or the most blissful but if combines all the totally different elements that make me love drain/sad boys music perfectly. Sherm killed the production, bladees verse is angelic as frick and kray goes hard as hell. Lean is a little underused on the song but his refrains and buildups are so fire. What's the best in your opinion?

I'm more interested in the actually intended gameplay for the new skate than bugs

there's going to be so many new gameplay elements from the fact that they are using a real modern engine and not the ancient dinosaur that was renderware

there's a lot more modern stuff they can do with physics, interactive elements, and some of the mechanics that were done in a very old school way in previous games like vehicles and pedestrians

I'm not hoping for GTA levels of pedestrian/vehicle interaction but it's very likely what we get will be more advanced than previous Skate games

I think it's very likely pedestrians will be able to ragdoll instead of doing their GTA 3 fall down thing, and it's possible that cars will have actual AI and not be track trains

I like that they're starting with the most important stuff but I do hope they get to some of these elements + make them more integrated into the gameplay

also one of the biggest disappointments in previous skate games is that pedestrians can be knocked down by you or your skateboard as a physics object, but not by props

I should be able to launch a prop into a pedestrian's head and send them flying/spinning

I hesitate to even put that in #skate-ideas-archived because there's no way that won't be a feature because we're not on an ancient engine anymore

it's something they can easily implement

skate 3 pedestrians were using techniques of canned falling down animations and ancient navmesh tech from like the 90s, there's no way they will be in Skate. in the same state

if they can do it, remember how much of a joy it was in GTA 4 just to knock into pedestrians and have them stumble and fall and get back up

that would be a ton of fun in Skate.

it's quite likely that skate. will have a mobile version that just weakens the graphics, draw distance, lower amounts of props / peds / vehicles unless you're online in which case some of that stuff can be server side

quite likely that this will not be as much of a problem as people think

ok... genshin is on mobile but I am not seeing very many "multiplat" EA games released on mobile along with other modern systems

so there is a bit of reason to be worried

engine scalability is a big factor to whether or not this will be a big problem

and there has been nothing to "prove" the scalability of frostbite on mobile with other platforms

so yeah.. hoping either they do it on the cloud or don't do it at all... I'm especially afraid for mobile as a platform because the precedent for mobile MTX is REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD.

mobile gamers will put up with the absolute most predatory, horrible MTX out there and companies make a lot of money making their MTX as predatory and horrible as they can on phones

a lot of talk on that game about how generous it is to give you stuff instead of witholding it to try to get you to pay

no exclusive battle pass cosmetics, just that the battle pass has set rewards that you can get even when the battle pass is not going on through other means

like everything is up on the store at all times but with the battle pass you can earn the seasonal cosmetic for cheaper, or if the season is over you can still get that item using the game's systems of non-paid-for rewards

I think they can leverage the good parts of a battle pass (promoting regular engagement) while removing some of the bad parts (FOMO)

people don't like them and it would be good to look into why

and I think FOMO is part of it

battle passes should be rewarding but should not obligate you to play them for negative emotional reasons like fear of not being able to get the cosmetic later if you don't

when you drive engagement with a gameplay element with negative emotions you create those negative associations with your brand, your product, and that gameplay element itself

that's why battle passes are getting so many downvotes

and this is not an unfixable problem, you can keep battle passes, you just need to look into why people have those negative associations

which is part of the goal for the game as F2P, see why people have negative associations with F2P and avoid those pitfalls

It is what it is. If a battle pass includes things I like, I'll buy it. Especially if it gives you rewards so completing it gives you enough credit for the next one. You don't need every cosmetic and I think it's cool to have some things others don't have because I played at a certain time that someone else didn't, or did something during an event others couldn't. If I'm on vacation for a week and can't play and miss something, then I'm fine, not like there isn't more stuff to come

you need to think of this from someone with an impulsively risk-over-reward personality, the type of person who becomes a hoarder

this type of person will play a game with a battle pass obsessively because they NEED all the rewards because what if they want them after it's over and can't get them

and said person often ends up spending a bunch of money or completely burning themselves out

I am not that far down the risk-over-reward spectrum but I do lean in that direction and so not having FOMO elements is very important to me

this is what people are afraid of because a lot of people have that going on at least a little bit and will suffer from the same fear of regret even if it doesn't overwhelmingly change their decision making and this is where the negative associations with the battle pass comes from

While I do think that should be taken into account when designing a system for monetization, I do think there is only so much that can be done and there is a factor of personal responsibility of a player that falls on them

people with reward-over-risk personalities are more affected by stuff like paid lootboxes and that's already deconfirmed (thank god)

generally I think that one thing unexplored with MTX is lowering people's inhibitions to spending money which is something that predatory MTX creates a big problem with

most MTX is click a button bam your money is gone

and for a lot of players this creates an inhibition for spending money on MTX or even straight up playing the game at all

I think it would loosen up people's inhibitions a lot if they could get a refund on regretted purchases and this is something a lot of digital storefronts are seeing with game refunds

less people impulsively buying things they realize they didn't want, would create more people being less inhibited to buy things they'll be satisfied with

unfortunately there's very little data on this because literally no one has ever done this with MTX before

but in terms of game purchases, refunds have become standard for regretted digital purchases

EA's own storefront will refund game purchases

you'd have to design it carefully to prevent people from, say, just juggling cosmetics and doing repeated refunds every 50 minutes of gameplay (or however long the refund period is) but it's also possible the end result of this would be actually keeping the stuff they like the look of and spending that money in the end

companies look at how so much of the money in F2P games is spent by whales and say "clearly whales are our intended audience" and few ask "why are most players not spending any money"

and if you have those refunds there will still be whales because there is no shortage of people with more money than sense and quite a large amount of them won't even bother to refund even with the option

anyways I am not a professional and this is just conjecture but it's worth noting that while there is a lot of data on how worse MTX practices can generate more money, I imagine the data on how better MTX practices can generate more money is not as common because no one has tried things like MTX refunds

but I can think of this from the perspective of a player and the ways bad MTX practices can build barriers to spending money or even playing the game in the first place

I think what I'd call it is the box of cookies logic, I know I don't have the self control to not just eat an entire box of cookies in one day so I don't even buy cookies because they only come in full boxes of them

whereas I will buy cookies if sold individually, and despite the cookie seller getting less money from the purchase, they are getting money that they wouldn't get at all from me otherwise

I think the same thing inhibits people who would spend money on MTX from engaging with it or even playing the game at all

multiversus is getting plenty of hype and coverage but the amount of negativity I've seen from streamers who even bother to play it anytime they interact with ANYTHING involving the MTX

and a lot of people are refusing to play it at all and dismissing it as garbage because of being F2P

and if you look at the beta you can see why, over half the starting characters are locked behind virtual / real currency purchases even the one you play as in the tutorial

and every streamer I've seen play the game HATES this

I think the most common thing I'm seeing in #skate-ideas-archived is your board breaking and I'm all for it

just as part of the bail system, if you bail in a way that puts a lot of strain on your board it should break

one of my biggest asks is more flick it tricks being able to be "held" to keep the board spinning - this is a cool feature in Skater XL and it would be fun to borrow imo

simple way to give you more to do with flip tricks

also body flips - the limit to 1 full body flip is lame, let us do more, especially if we somehow manage to launch the body flip with some kind of angular momentum
