Yup you can play for free with tier 0 but it will be very hard (100 hours to grind) to make a profit with them by leveling them up, if not impossible once there are many tier 0 on the markets. So anybody can try the game out and see if they like it, but if they want to have a good probability to make money, the need to invest into tier 1s, travel fees, shards

It's a great way to hook up people, which is why I think Illuvium will be way more successful than axie because axie in that regard has the worst barrier. In hype times people had to invest like 1K USD before being able to play the game and see if they like it. Many people didn't even try it because of this high barrier. Besides that, ILV is a triple A game which can not really be compared to the very basic gameplay of axie
