very different. but here is the short list
sILV = fixed based on APY, APY go down every 2 weeks + if more people stake.
Fuel = you need to play to get fuel, but the more you play the amount of money you can earn from fuel can be really high. (based on tier also). depending on the demand for the fuel the price can be varied. And blue prints are one of the main x factor for land as you can get really rare blue prints.

if you don't want to spend time playing to earn, go for staking. (and staking has added benefit of revDis)
if you want to play and earn, go for a land. plus if you want to get those blue prints.

There's a lot more evidence for the contrary. Balancer sales happen all the time in crypto and people don't insta buy the token, despite the hype that may be associated with it.

BUT, while the game will be free to play, in order to participate in the earning part of the economy, a bit of money needs to be invested. A full cycle of travelling, curing shards, etc. is currently estimated to be around $50 (this can still change).

Yeah, staking is currently active for the ILV token. Keep in mind it's not a "game" token as it isn't used in the game. It is the protocol's governance token.

In-game currency will be ETH... or if you stake the ILV token, you can choose to claim your rewards as sILV which can be spent in-game instead of ETH 🙂

And it's important to note that when you fail to capture an Illuvial, you don't lose the shard.

correct. However, Land sale is being done as a dutch auction to help avoid gas wars, so the price starts high and decreases over time. This makes it very unlikely that two people will try to buy at the same time. IF by chance this happens, then it will be won by whoever's transaction is faster (i.e. paid the higher gas fee).
