You don't need to pay for playing the main game, however you will have to put some money in if you want to, lets say, unlock the full game experience. Meaning travelling to regions, cure shards to capture illuvials, find rarer illuvials etc. However you will be able to play in free regions with tier0 illuvials without paying, so it will be up to you to decide

my guess is v2 will happen first. but not necessarily "have to".
basically you sell the fuel you generate from land to the main game. and you use the money from that back in the main game. It is not like you produce the resources and transfer those to the account in your main game directly. Of course the higher the tier the more money you will generate but the cost will be high too.
so you will have to decide for yourself. Land is not really about support your character in the main game directly.

You would do a run for up to 50$ where you can capture quite a couple illuvials. 3 months ago Aaron mentioned in an interview somewhere between 4 and 15 (this ofc is probably still changing). Depending on your way of playing, and whether you are lucky :)
