What I know is that there are a couple ways to earn:

1. Single player stuff -> capturing and selling illuvials, harvesting and crafting and then selling items, etc.
2. Whale PVP stuff -> wagering on Leviathan arena matches
3. Ranked PVP stuff -> there's some mention of in-game rewards?
4. Trading stuff -> buy low sell high on the marketplace

For a non-whale that just wants to own some cute illuvials, and use them to battle, how do I earn?

Say for instance I'm not interested in the single player elements, only in the PVP gameplay; and I'm not whale enough to fight in the Levathan Arena since I would probably be crushed by actual whales; and I'm a terrible trader and wouldn't wanna buy/sell on the marketplace

Does this mean the onl way for me to earn would be via ranked PVP matches? And will I still be at a disadvantage compared to others that spent more money than me?

Ok, maybe I'm just not getting it. I'll try to close the book on this because I guess we have been discussing it for a while. Please correct me if I'm wrong but my take-away is:

If you are a player only interested in casual PvP with friends and some ranked ladder, and you don't intend to go pro and top the leaderboards (where there would probably be some rewards to claim), then there is no clear "monetary return" for buying any illuvials from the marketplace (aside from selling off what you bought) gameplay-wise.

The only thing I can think of is getting able to use the new illuvial(s) that you've bought in the ranked ladder (but once again no direct monetary returns for this)

Let me preface this by saying this is speculation based on what we have been given from the team so far. We don't really know until the team tells us otherwise.

There may be PvP rewards, no info yet. I would be against rewards for every win, personally, but that's just me.

Imo, your opportunity to generate in game yield will be greatly diminished by not participating in PvE. I consider the game to be played as a whole. Capture your Illuvials and then battle with them. Maybe capture duplicates to sell to purchase one you've had trouble finding/capturing.

The use case for Illuvials is to use them in the game. And then rarity becomes a factor with the different types and subsequently different sets.

No ILV is the only one out of those 2 that can be staked. ILV alone stake for roughly 40% apy but SLP which is half ILV and half ETH has an APY of 400% or more. SLP has more inherent risk, sILV is the synthetic version of ILV that can be used for only ingame purchases or fees. sILV is about 50% cheaper than ILV atm due to the game not being out yet.

It depends whether you are willing to spend alot of sIlv or Eth, to be realistic. Right now it's assumed that a circuit of catching/gathering/fighting on one of the higher tier areas cost around 50$. The Ilv token is a governance token, which pr say, has nothing to do with ingame activities.

Start at free tier 0.. catch half a dozen illuvials, grind them up, sell one for 30 bucks, use that to go into Tier 1, use your team to catch a few tier 1s, sell another critter for 30 or 40 bucks, go do another T1 loop, catch a few more.. rinse and repeat all the way to the highest tiers and still be making profit.

Land is a different game, if you have land, you earn ETH from farming resources that you sell to the in-game market.
In the main game where you catch illuvials, you will be buying the fuel from the in game market to do your traveling and shard curing to catch the illuvials. You can use sILV for this, but most will use ETH.
