When you travel to a region you have a certain amount of energy. That energy can be used for a variety of actions including scanning, gathering, battle etc. In theory you can even capture more than one Illuvial per travel but using your energy wisely and thus optimizing your spoils per travel will make a huge difference between good and less good players.

The token scarcity can also be seen as something representing quality. Look at BTC, it doesn't have an abundance of tokens either. When these things are being sold it's a player selling something they got for free as part of a promotion from the ILV team, it's not the team selling it on the open market. As far as the DAO is concerned, it was given for free as a promotion, why would it be taxed?

Also, each Illuvial is on a bonding curve which means that with every copy someone captures of a particular Illuvial it will be harder to capture another one for everyone. This means that Illuvials get harder and harder to capture until a set completely retires and is replaced by a new one 🙂

People really need to understand that SLP in Axie is nothing but a currency/a token. It doesn't matter one bit what currency/token you use as long as it has value. In Axie people farm SLP and what do they with it? Sell it for FIAT money to use in real life. In ILV you simply farm ILV (where it is possible) and even more so you have a ton of different options (certainly more than in Axie) to get items that you can sell on the marketplace for ETH. Take that ETH (or ILV) to an Exchange (like Axie people do with their SLP), sell it and live from it. Tada... 🙂

sILV is a substitute currency that can be gained as yield when staking ILV. In game, it can be used to pay for any fee (excluding IlluviDEX trades and Leviathan Arena wagers) that otherwise would be paid for with the main currency ETH.

While claimed staking rewards in the form of ILV are locked for 12 months, sILV offers the opportunity to liquidate your staking rewards immediately. The tradeoff for that is that sILV only can be used in-game and does not provide compounding in any form.

You can always sell your items, yes. From Tier 0 (free regions) it won't have any real value for long though, I guess (if at all), and for Tier 1+ regions there is no guarantee that you will break even. You can, yes. You can even make a ton of profit in your first run and maybe be set for tons of travels with it. Just as you could get spoils that aren't enough to pay for a new run without adding new funds on top. It is a free economy after all and there cannot be any guarantee that every run equals at least rewards as high as the costs. That would be a guaranteed inflation = unsustainable economy.

You can also stake ILV and claim your rewards as sILV to spend in game.

It's really hard (and a bit dangerous) to speculate on what a free market will do in a game where we don't have detailed information about the game systems yet. It depends on catch rates, player growth, Illuvial rarity, luck, resource consumption rates and more.

It’s a lot of money time and trust in them that was just lost for a company that touts so much about decentralization. They are but it’s rough. The regulation isn’t even passed and would not be in affect till 23. The prices of the cards in gu have been propped up by the promised airdrop rewards. Specially the second set that is not evergreen and has more print numbers. But it’s more then that even.
