Illuvials are on a bonding curve which means with every copy of a certain Illuvial that gets captured it gets harder to capture another one. This continues until a new set drops and the active set is retired completely from capturing. MAYBE a rare and finite amount of that set remains in the wild, but that is still to be discussed.

That energy can be used for a variety of actions including scanning, gathering etc. You can in theory capture more than one Illuvial per travel (optimizing spoils per travel will make a huge difference between good and less good players). I don't think you can capture the same Illuvial again after having it escaped though.

During that travel you only have a limited amount of possible actions. Otherwise you could capture Illuvials infinitely for paying a small fee once. Makes no sense economy wise.
