Hey all. Just gotten into Ark in the last few months and I've only played on The Island so far. I want to start on a new map but can't decide which one. I've heard Ragnarok is a good one but wanted some other opinions.

My map criteria is a good Dino selection and interesting landscape. Not super interested in bosses or story atm.

Ragnarok is a good second map. Scorched Earth would be next in the overall story, and is quite challenging as a step up in difficulty.

Aberration is another large step up in difficulty from SE,

Based on your criteria, I would say Ragnarok most fits the bill.

if you want an interesting challenge and an absolutely stunningly beautiful environment, try aberration. if i was purely limited to one map, that would be my choice. its not as harsh and unforgiving as scorched earch because you dont die to heat stroke every 5 minutes, but the chalenges come from not having flyers or grappling hooks, so you mostly get around with zip-lines, climbing picks, and glider suits

though once you start taming things like ravagers and crabs, they start being your go-to for getting around. then you get rock drakes and the whole map opens up to you. rock drakes are insanely fun to ride

im assuming you are playing singleplayer. in that case i cant help you. ive never played singleplayer (outside of using it as a testing ground because of console commands). 99% of my 4.8k hours in this game are on official pvp servers which are an entirely different beast.
its not for everyone, but having to design your base around defending from players rather than it just being a glorified warehouse adds several layers of interesting complexity to the game, no to mention dealing with tribal politics. ive made so many good friends playing this game because of that

yea thats what i mean when i say its not for everyone. getting raided isnt fun. but for me personally, having to protect your stuff from being raided gives me purpose. its something to work for. i will say though that if you do decide to give pvp another try somehwere down the line, try the crossarks. they are much more laid back because its 1 server per map instead of the main official cluster where its over 100 servers per map and literally anyone can pop in from any server, raid your stuff, and leave without you having any idea of who they are or where they came from. crossark servers have more of a sense of community

honestly if you want my opinion, stay away from pve. it might seem counterintuitive, but pve is far more toxic than pvp simply because theres no reprocussions for your actions. if i attack someone in pvp, i better be prepared for a counterattack from both them and their friends. on pve, if i lure a giga into someone's base or fly in and take kibble out of the dino they are taming or lure things to attack what they are taming or surround their base with foundation spam so they cant expand their construction....well what are they gona do about it? they cant attack me back cuz its pve. all they can do is pull scummy things like that back at me on a later date, which is behavior that just breeds toxicity

thats the biggest reason why i dont play on unofficials. ive never been able to find a server that ive been able to play on for more than a month before they either wipe or straight up take the server down cuz of inactivity. i absolutely hate building up for a month only log in the next day and be greeted with the character creator. and even then when you do finally find a server that sticks around and doesnt wipe, its almost always 10x rates and a bunch of mods that make the game far too easy. i just dont like that kind of play personally.

it honestly depends on what you had. you can always look up drop tables on the wiki to see what you can get from what drops. OSDs tend to give realy good loot, as do rag desert drops, lava golem, and ice queen

There's plenty to load with overhaul mods. Black screen means game is yet to show you the loading screen, and for that it needs to load majority of the first mod from list.
PF takes about 3min for me on my new rig, took around 8 on old.

I'm just at the point now where I'm 99% focused on dino breeding, and have very little else that I "need" to do. With this setting, I'm basically only logging in to check/start breeding, etc., and it's stretching the experience out from hours to days.

it turns ark from a survival game into basically a sandbox once you have those "overcapped" dinos, with only like 20,30 mutations and so on you still cant take down anything wild with basically weaker tames or just steamroll everything in your path, still takes more planning and preparation. once you hit like 100 pts in important stats, wild dinos of any sort become basically a joke (not meaning extreme edge cases like fighting wild rexes with a 100 dmg point araneo and such oc)

Yes you have to allow events. Once you do that then use the command destroywilddinos and will wipe all dinos and the easter color ones will start spawning in
