What is the point of having a thrall for yourself when they - besides inventory Management like a robot Butler - don't do anything they are told to?

I sat one on my rex and he refuses to follow me or go on patrol no matter which Mode I chose. Harvest, Turret, follow, nothing.

Besides the bug that you have to cryo both every time you gave an order or they wont even recognise the dino anymore, how do I get them to fight for me besides on the ground as meat shields???
