banned from libraries and stuff like it's really hard to get a physical version

Seems rather easy to get a physical, kindle and/or audiobook version

does anybody know a good book on preventing suicide
I recommend one of the popular wellbeing courses
not sure if this is what you mean but David Hume’s ‘on suicide’ is a fantastic read
tysm💜
ill try both of these recommendations
cant anyone give me recommendations for reading, I am new for reading books. I want to read some self improvements, like 48 rules power, or atomic habits, but dont know where to start
i dont think I would consider the 48 laws of power to be a self improvement book lol, but atomic habits would be a good place to start
If you search for self help in the two book channels you'll find a lot.
save yourself the time, nearly all self help books are bullshit
I think for an experienced reader they might be shit, however, for someone who wants to get introduced to reading they could be useful, they're pretty easy to digest and could help with motivation, specially the ones from goggins
Has someone read "The Bell Jar " by sylvia Plath ?
it's in my tbr
endless tbr but it's there
Oh same i have to buy it so i thought maybe ask someone who has read it .
hii people who read on kindle here?
I read it a few years ago. If you hesitate to buy, I highly recommend it
ohh I download the epub (not mobi) onto the kindle and it’s usually a lot less storage than that
What is it about like is it difficult to read and understand ? Then I'll buy it
I mean if its interesting
i mean yes, as far i remember, its a very good story by the way its narrated. sylvia writes very well
but i remember not understanding some words but you still enjoy it (you suffer too haha its kinda sad)
Oh okay I'll read it then Ok
Thanks for telling
Anyone have a book recommendation which may fit into one or more of these categories :
- psychological/ thought provoking
- detailed fiction / adventure / anything but romance lol no offense ( ex : maze runner series ) no childish stuff please
- self help books which are like straight to the point and simple ( ex : the subtle art of not giving a f**k)
- thriller / horror , doesn't matter if it's fiction or nonfiction
- classics
I've lost the habit of reading over the years so if you have some good books do recommend, I really love to read but quite slowly lost the time for it
I am an above - intermediate level reader so my understanding of complex or higher level books is pretty good
The Road and No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy if you haven't already - The Road is dark, gritty, and post-apocalyptic, and NCfOM is Southern Gothic Crime/Mystery
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, dystopian speculative fiction depicting a near-future totalitarian state (not YA fiction)
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, jsut a cool book that weaves together storylines across time and space
All are pretty well-known and also have film/TV series adaptations
For self help I like "atomic habits" by James clear
Thanks a lot will check them out
Read It End with us by coleen hover i think u will like it and then u will love reading more novels like that
What is your level of reading, as in, how much have you have read and how deep do you analyse?
I don't really know how to quantify it but I've read some higher level books such as Shakespeare, Moby Dick , old Sherlock Holmes etc
Talking about analysis, I don't do it quite regularly, if and only if the topic is not understandable or I really am intrigued about it I go for further research, other than I think if I read the same page 2-3 times I think I can grasp everything the author is trying to say , unless it is highly coded or extremely mind stretching lol
Wow I use the word highly a lot
No wonder my vocabulary sucks
@onyx ruin if you’re keen on classics, but are trying to get back into the reading habit i would recommend ‘The Stranger’ by albert camus
it can be read in a day, and is digestible as far as classic literature goes. however it’s got some fun psychological themes and is a really great exercise in getting in the headspace of a non-relatable character
Thank you will definitely check it out 🙂
The Alchemist is novel or motivational book..Is it worth it for self improvement?? Like im reading self improvement book everyday and my current book is ending so i was thinking of what should i start next?? Should i read The Alchemist?
Sure you could read it for self improvement, but it's more of a book with a story that has many messages behind it, a lot to learn but not necessarily a "self-help" book
Thanks!!
I'd recommend you "Jane Eyre" by Brontë, Charlotte. Now, while this book does have romance; it is well done and not of the "young adult" archetype. It also check off your criteria #1, 4 and 5.
I'd also add Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca", a modern classic, which also completes criteria #1, 4 and 5.
I see Sim has recommended you books by McCarthy and Atwood, two great contemporary authors. I will add onto their recommendation with "Blood Meridian" and "Alias Grace".
It is a novel and a work of fiction, this does not meant that it you can't derive ideas from it. I would honestly recommend most people who only read self-help books to branch out into some modern, but mostly classical fiction.
Imagine you are trying to learn how to throw a spear. You get two options in how to learn. The first is to read the literature and opinion-pieces of the current research and trends. The other is to watch in person, a master spear thrower in action, for as many hours as you want.
Neither of these choices are bad per se, however if you combine them you will receive a massive bonus not otherwise available.
Also the alchemist is a good book, makes you feel good and its rather short. You'll be able to finish quickly without speedreading, so you're not losing a big investment if you find that the book isn't for you.
Thanks for recommendation I'll definitely consider this. And I like the way you explained it with example. I decided I will read the alchemist and if by chance you have suggestion for books then let me know!!! I would love to branch out and try something new than normal.
Cheers. I can give a few suggestions for sure, however lets wait until you finish the alchemist and then describe what you liked and didn't like. As well as maybe which genres or movies/series you like in general, and what you're looking for in books. That will narrow it down for better suggestions👍
Thank you , adding them to my list

I've reported it, I'm sure the mods will handle it as soon they can

I read all kinds of stuff. I’ve been trying to get into classics and educational books. But right now I’m reading into the wild, no longer human, and black cake.
It was so out of pocket I laughed
Sorry if this is explained somewhere but is there currently a book club going on
I don’t think so
atp this is just a place to recommend

Nope. Due to low interaction, the book club is put on hold. Will restart it prolly after christmas and new year.

And I have a pdf of Atomic Habits if anyone likes to
Not sure where I even got it from and if we're even allowed to do that (like it probably isnt that legal lol) but 1. we don't republish it accessible to everyone and 2. i would still do it if i can do somebody a favor by sharing knowledge lol
I would be interested too if that's not a problem. I would highly appreciate it, though qwq
Could I get the pdf as well if its no bother??
uh kets ask some one here how can soe one add me here
waht kinda self control
its ok its available on internet everywhere
Yes, but I don't remember where. Maybe google docs (for some movies and books, you can search up [name] docx). I can send u the pdf per dm too tho
the good one🤷♂️
read atomic habbits
if you want to develop good habbits
you can reverse engineer that book to leave any bad habbits as well
start from there
Check out The 12 Week Year if you want to get stuff done or Dopamine Nation if you want to know why it’s difficult to get things done. I haven’t really read anything directly on self control.
Why 6 times
"Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ" by Daniel Goleman
"Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" by Carol Dweck
"The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business" by Charles Duhigg
check these out as well
okay thank you
i was learning engilsh in that time so it was more like practice
I also want to learn English
use send to kindle website
thats bull
use moon reader +
much better
Please elaborate
log into amazon acccount
upload the epub file onto the website
it will send it to kindle library
then open kindle app and it should be in the library. takes a bit, maybe 5 mins to uplaod
brother. self control is a habit. you build it slowly. you can read a million books on the theory of developing self control. but thats like reading a book on how to play the violin. 10 million books won't teach you how to play the violin. you simply have to play the violin and practice it
stop trying to find some secret hack of self control in a book. just practice it daily man. you want a cookie, just don't eat it. you don't want to read, just read a little bit
no quote in a book is gonna make you david goggins man lol
preach preach
yes father
but listen ,I'm not trying to find a "secret hack of self control in a book" im just so Desperate to find any thing that could help me
and don't make it that easy " you want cookie, just don't eat it" its realy hard to stop someting that you used to live most of your life with
so please stop acting that you know what it feels like
what I’ve learnt about self-control is from books like ‘Atomic Habits’ and ‘Deep Work’ which is essentially this - the difference between the disciplined and the undisciplined is not due to a difference in willpower.
Willpower is a renewable but finite resource. Meaning that each day you can only resist your temptations to a certain degree until you can’t do so anymore. Which also means that avoiding temptation is better than trying to resist it. Therefore, the area to focus on is your environment.
Focus on controlling what you see in your environment and what you interact with - and shape those to assist you in achieving what you want to do.
The only books you really need to read are deep work, atomic habits and can’t hurt me
why do you think that
What else do you need? These 3 books really cover everything you need to know about becoming productive and living a life you love
The rest is just doing
i’m probably going to go to virgin and pick up a copy of atomic habits. bought “the diary of a CEO” yesterday, been reading that and it seems fine, some points definitely make sense lol
Atomic habits is all about taking action, keep this in mind
I read the book I keep in the bathroom when I sit on the toilet.
there have been a few times when it was interesting enough to not put down
what topics are covered in deep work??
i wanna know coz i really want to learn doing deep work
mindset on how to approach work, how to set up your environment, how to work deeply, how to schedule your work etc
It basically covers everything you need to know about work
ohhh alrr tysm
You're right, bro! Nothing changes if nothing changes

Yeah, I imagine. On my onyx boox, that's running on android, setup process is just install android app, but kobo reader, i think, running on his own OS...
Do you use calibre books drop to send books to your e-tablet?
Yea I do it’s kinda slow but I work while their sending
I originally wanted a book leaf 2 but they sold out do you know where k can get boox products from?
Hmmm, i bought mine from a local digital tech store. As far as i know, Onyx must deliver their devices from their official website or some retail shops. You may be able to find some models on Amazon too.
I will add one to this list 'How to win friends and influence people'. This is a great book what do you guys think would love to hear your opinion
Guys
I really need to find these books
I've been searching for them but I couldn't find them yet
I'd be the HAPPIEST person alive if you can find it
Laptop ain't a brand
how do this book club works?
It’s not about the laptop tho 😭
today i finished "cant hurt me" by david goggins
Those books are related to langauge learning I think
What we mean is the books probably arent real but either the result of some image generating software or a photoshopper working for some language learning/translation company
yeah bro,i get it
They look pretty real actually but thank you tho,i appreciate it
<@&942391219206647828>

Banned. thanks dude
Helloo guyss
I have reading slump from a long time and I can't read anymorrre (I tried some tips to do but It didn't work )
help 😭
do you like music?
suurrrre
imagine someone is sitting behind you reading the same book and put some music
try focusing on music
you"ll end it in no time
The thing is .. i can't complete a page
i can't read
c
cant read as in language issue or losing focus evry now and then
not a language issue nor losing focus
I get bored easily
even if the book is good
i can't complete it
do you really wanna keep reading that book , even if you get bored , leaving aside the fact book is bad or good..
if not , let it go .. nothings wrong
if yes , read it anyway .. if it is really meant to be ..
This sounds nice
But I don't think it works , I have tried this before
And the thing goes with reading little pages then leave the whole book (when I wanted to keep on reading either when not wanted to ) , I did this with many books
I can't find a solution and I'm so upset
i understand , i was in the same spot during qurantine
what i did was just kept reading , the moment i felt like stopping i talked myself back to reading
kinda felt obnoxious and weird..
but did it anyway
i guess that was the only way..
does it affects your acedmics?
I'll try again, I hope it works this time
yeah
someway ... I can't study well , I get bored fast
what makes me study , when someone read the lecture for me , that encourage me to complete by myself >.<
are you finding that you’re getting bored because your attention span is short?
I can't confirm that , I found out a test just now , and I got 41/100
it says I'm quite have it
I see. In that case it might be worth taking a lot at what your lifestyle is like in terms of device use and other behaviours that may be affecting it
in this age there are lots of activities that may affect our ability to concentrate*
Maybe try getting a reading partner who reads the same book/subject. Then ask questions as to where they reached and have a sort of discussion on the topics or characters. That should help.
That's true 100%
I'll try to reduce it as much as I can
I did this with my subjects and already worked , maybe yeah I should have tried it with reading
I hoppppe it works this time
Sweet. Good luck.
Can someone tell me where I could find pdfs for books
Or if someone could find me the pdf of the new revelations by Neale Donald Walsch, I'd be highly thankful
You can probably find a text to text to speech app or read it into a voice recorder then play it back. To make the audio file, you'll at least go over it once.
Idk if I should ping the mods for this, but at least at want you guys (mods) to see my message
Because this question is definitely asked the most frequently in this channel
we don't pin messages mostly because of them being reported and getting copyright striked
Please read this
#jimmys-book-club message
There was a separate channel called 'book-links' but it had to be closed down due to discord restrictions.
Ref : #jimmys-book-club message
I see, thanks for clarifying guys.
any fiction recomendations?
Duna
YUHHHHH we learnin today boys
Harry Potter Series
The Fault in Our Stars
The Hunger Games
just started man's search for meaning , started feeling more privileged then ever, though i've just read 40 pages but still those 40 pages are enough to give chills
I recently got into reading and im still shocked how much I read, I basically went on to google and searched up every marketing book that is good for reading and I read 40 books of just marketing. (and a lil business) its crazy what can happen when you put your mind to something.
Nice! So did you learn 40 different approaches to marketing or were some/all very simillar in message? What are your key takeaways?
Finishing up atomic habits. What software is good for reflecting on your habits and does anyone have any favorite parts of the book they incorporated into their life?
james uses habitify
im still on the 2nd law but I kind of got the one space one work thing down
i loved that book, my favorite part is making the bad habits hard to do and good habits easier to do.
One of my bad habits was not waking up at the time i wanted to wake up so i set a alarm almost 6ft away for me to turn it off
I remember that line, it hit me
I do the same.
I got this idea from one of jamses videos, My Alexa turns on my light at 730AM. I'd say it helps but it could be a lot better, like a light therapy box on an arm.
That's good
Its amazing how much our minds prioritize saving time. Thus small changes in environment lead to shocking results.
in your amzon account on (laptop) you will have an option to send a file to your kindle btw where do you download manga from?
has anyone read Alexs adventures in numberland
.

hello guys ,
what's ur method for taking notes ?

can u explain it
Start with a main point, indent for sub-points
Like this
You can also try mapping method & cornell method
would you be able to get a kindle, reading on it is greatt. and you can import epub files to it easily
I didn't know you could import them to the kindle! Yes I was looking around and found out about it. Which Kindle do you have and could you tell me your experiences with it?
What are cons and pro's for you?
I have the most basic kindle model but it was released in 2022
I think the pricier ones aren’t really necessary as they function the same, just some other models are waterproof or have a pen which you can write with or there are differences in front light, storage, screen size etc
I used to read on my phone and then i switched to kindle and it was so much better reading on it. The screen doesn’t glare and it has the feel of flicking paper pages as the display looks like a printed page. also there’s tons of storage so basically unlimited books. and it’s really easy to download books onto it through the kindle app. the battery lasts a long time too
Cons - when you make highlights and want to type notes about the books it can be quite slow to type. but that’s only if you highlight and take notes while reading. also the price, a kindle can be kind of expensive
hope this helps!!
you don't need to buy a kindle you can use an epub by uploading it on google books and turn on grayscale on your phone
Yeah the price does bother me a bit but I'll have to take a look! I now just read books on my laptop but obviously that isn't the most fun and optimal. Thanks for your help!
Smart alternative
animal farm was depressing

HOW THE HECK DID ANIMALS KNOW ABOUT COMMUNISM??
Because it’s in our nature, comrade

Notes from underground
Dostoevsky is too heavy for my 🧠
He hacked humanity
What?
his books talk about human nature at its finest
What's the easiest Dostoevsky book to understand or start out with? Is there a recommended order roadmap?
white nights dostoevskij
It is very short and quite light
In reality it is not a little difficult, but it is quite smooth
Thanks zi, I've always hear about that author but never read anything of his yet
i must say NOTES FROM UNDERGROUND
tbh it's not that easy
but it's a beautiful way to really taste dostoevsky's style
white nights is good and it's the one i started with
but u can't really see that much of dostoevsky in it
it's romantic and light while his books are known to be deep
Anyone read this
I don't like motivation/productivity books beacos summary give you more then book itself
Isn't that helpful then?
I'm not saying that is not helful i just don't like it
Fiction books are more boring
What does it mean, I am new to english

yeah I dont think anybody actively chooses a book for everybody to read and discuss anymore
yeah the admin ended the club last year
its 'put on hold' #book-club-calendar message
Yessssir Mr beast book club
Has anyone read no longer human?
yea, anything you’d like to know about it?
I couldn't finish it cause the author is a mf, mc dropped a hint of where the novel was going.
I want to know if there is a similar novel where the mc tries to be a better person rather than falling down the drain.
ah yea it’s probably better, then, that you didn’t finish it. it really beat my expectations in all the wrong ways. especially towards the end when I thought it wouldn’t get any worse, it did. mixed feelings for me reading it - frustration, pity, melancholy
I can’t say I’ve read a similar novel where the mc tries to be better and succeeds in doing so. this was also quite a unique novel in its own right
Ah well lets decide on a book then by the end of May together if anyones interested?
I did
I personally liked it
I mean that book is definitely not about a success story or smtg motivating nor inspiring
It's merely a book to show how Bad can a human become with just little choices He make from now and then
A bad friend, a bad community and a bad decision and ur life is gone
And weirdly enough a lot of People See themselfs in that Character
He's brutally honest abt Things we feel ashamed to share or admit
The moral of the Story : be careful with the decisions u make , little Bad decisions can cost u a lifetime of regret and suffering. Be aware of who u choose to be around.
can somwone tell how to make amazon acount i have kindle but it say it need amazon acount ,i dont understand it
sign up w ur email i guess
Hi! Is this a book-club?
It was, then it wasn't, now it'll be again 😁
perfect, we propose a reading book?🫶
^
Nah. There would be an discussion at the end of the month and apparently only 2-3 people would turn out, which was kinda disappointing.
And also there were no volunteers, so it was hard to manage the designing, surveying, filtering, then choosing a book everyone would be okay with, and then setting up discussions. It was too much to do alone.
well I certainly have the energy to try again
^ lets decide by Wednesday on a book to be read by the end of May and we'll see how it goes
Why not just spin a wheel and decide a random book? Everyone would be forced to read the same thing regardless of they like it or not
May even take people out of their comfort zones
If you want, I propose 8 books to read in the coming months, one book per month, and if that's okay with you, we'll start with the May one.
It Is not a bad idea, we select a huge Number of book from different fields,
(all objectively well done and written) and then randomly we pick a book for everyone
Let's do that next time! Maybe a huge excel where everyone can leave suggestions. However let's stick with the poll (probably Murder on the Orient Express) for next month.
Yeahh, we can try different approaches and see which one gets the most engagement
We could encourage fields diversity by suggesting for people to propose, lets say, 1 or 2 books per genre so there's enough to choose from each
In order to have no particular bias, that is
I volunteer
How we got 150,000 members and only 3 ppl turning up, that’s a shame
I had taken a survey and this was the result : #book-club-calendar message
Apparently, my sense of thought was everyone would recommend a/multiple book and that could be the book of the month. So, like 12 months = 12 books. Since some books had like 500+ pages, it was for 2 months. So roughly we had to read 6-12 books per year.
Here's what happened :
- Half of the people didn't turn up because of conflicting timezones.( @wispy escarp - this is why 3 people turn out. The highest I remember is 400+. We also need to keep in mind this is a study server, and not necessarily a book club server)
- Half of the people just turned for the VC, apparently not knowing what the book is about nor having read it.
- Others couldn't wait for 1 or 1+ hour for the discussion, and it was mostly empty when the discussion was quite exciting.
Skim from the beginning of #book-club-calendar , you will have an idea as to how many surveys for user suggestions were taken into consideration resulting in the current state of decline.
If we have a bunch of folks again vouching for the book club, we could re-start the same.
Aight the poll is over
So a narrow victory for Murder on the Orient Express by A. Christie!
Lets read it by 31st of May and discuss it at 10pm utc+0 or in chat the whole day
I'll drop a pdf and epub version later today here in chat
until the 31st no spoilers!
well I don`t get free time in a day still will give it a try
@true elm perhaps you can make an announcement?
Brilliant! Thank you very much for caring to share the book, see you on May 31, enjoy reading!
It's also my first time, I'm in act 1, my native language is Spanish and I'm reading it in English
I haven't read it before but when I was a kid I saw the tv series episode. So I vaguely remembered the plot.
<@&891686274702909451>
Hello, it's the first time I look at this room, I even didn't know what it was about 😅 but I'm in!! It will be my first Agatha Christie!
Have you read one of her book before?
amazing book, read it once before. you folks will enjoy this one.😁
agatha
I read the mysterious affair at Styles before. Its the first Poirot book.
I watched old Poirot series with my family growing up, it will be interesting to read it. Rn I'm stuck with Harry Potter lol I'm having trouble reading anything else, I haven't found any very compelling stories. Has anyone experienced this?
Maybe you should publish the book of the month in the calendar section so ppl can quickly get what's happening?
unfortunately that is for people who have the Head of the bookclub role. I asked Scythe and he tagged the Bookclub notif role in this chat instead.
I asked one of the mods, I hope he can fix it
I think I'll join a library so I can borrow books. I've seen Orient Express, but never read it. I heard the main character is a bit differently portrayed in the movie vs books
I love David suchet :")
where's the book
^ It’s been a while but excited to read again
@valid chasm
I had some work. Did that now. Apologies.
no problemo!
Damm, nice book choice!
Ya did good work @sick geyser and thank you @true elm
hii zuzu, what do you want to improve upon?
Basically I am going through some self doubt phase and my concentration is so low nowadays plus overall thinking what is point of this life ngl lol
i see, for focus you can read the books james recommended; deep work and digital minimalism
i hope you resolve your issues and find the answers to your questions soon ❤️
Thank you 💗

I read it a while back and I gotta say, it had a lot of negative effects on me.
But, I think it's more of personal taste anyways. If you like depressing shi, then go for it. If not, dnf

Yo I'm a new reader and I need some good recommendations
Hello, people. Maybe, some of you know about the project Wikisource by the Wikimedia Foundation, that proofreads public domain book scans and turns them into the text format. It would be a great help if some of you could help and proofread just a few pages of any books that you might like, and it would allow to make this heritage more accessible for the people.
If you are interested, please, refer to this page on how to start https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Help:Beginner's_guide_to_Wikisource
Every month, English community publishes a list of books they want to proofread this month, but you are free to choose anything you want https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Proofread_of_the_Month
There are also communities for many other languages.
Sorry, if this is off-topic to the channel
The "Beginner's Guide" series of help pages is an entry level guide for new and inexperienced users of Wikisource. The intent is to provide users with the basics they will need to use Wikisource. These pages should:

Hello. Does anyone have any good recommendation?
Thanks
nahh bro
Thank you
hey! can anyone recommend a book about leadership? @everyone
Dale Carnegie: How to win friends and influence people
Haven’t read much on leadership though 🤷♂️
Pretty good book though. Just emphasizes some things
"The Secret Red Book Of Leadership" by Awdesh Singh.
This is by far the best book I have found regarding leadership. It also discusses some concepts from other books ie. Dale Carnegie, Alfred Lansing, etc.
can anyone recommend a book excluding self-help books
which genre and fiction or non fiction?
Who finished Murder on the Orient express in time for tomorrows book club 🤓?
any kind of book excluding self help, refernce books, college books, journals etc. any fiction or non-fiction i dont mind.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is really damn good, check it out
The Silent Patient.
One of the best book i have read in a very long time
yes
Rebecca by daphne du maurier
it has aesthetics and heavy suspense and its extremely atmospheric ✴️
highly highly highly recommend it, and thats speaking as someone who's read agatha christie's purported "best work" and found it to be not nearly as good
If you read it let me know what you think!
the midnight library, love hypothesis, haunting adeline

i just finished the movie Perfect Days and there's this book that caught my eye was "Tree by Aya Koda"
been trying to find any pdf/kindle version of it but couldn't find it, does anyone know about this book and know where is it on the internet?
Do they know?
Oh me too, I automatically thought it wasn't a real book for some reason, didn't seem like one at least 💀
I don't think it's been translated
nah babie, you and @autumn quail are my girl in this rap

Yeah, it has not been translated. Now I know why the bookstore owner said that she deserves more recognition lool
<_<
Are there some books /novels which are sad or make you cry? Then tell me !
I need something heart breaking to read cause I'm tired of being happy all the time
a man called Ove by fredrik backman
as long as the lemon trees grow by Zoulfa Katouh
the book thief by Markus zusak
Mondays not coming by Tiffany Jackson
Little life maybe?
no longer human, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes (enjoy your time)

Read Oyasumi Punpun (Goodnight Punpun) but it's a manga...
idk if it will make you cry but it will definitely make you depressed
I loved oyasumi punpun
Hey I have a few questions and would like some help. I like to read and I also like to own physical copies of books. Lately I have been wanting to look into an e-reader and own my copies of the books I get. Should I go with a kindle or do I not really own the book? Is there a way to torrent stuff into a device? Which device is the best? Thank you
Personally, there's no point in owning it unless I'm going to reread it. I just download everything off libgen on my laptop then put it on my onedrive and use onesync to copy them all to my tablet.
Yeah you can get permanent copies from libgen or annas archive. I recommend a kobo. I recently got a kobo Libra 2 and really like it
Why don't u get
'the man who knew infinity' by robert kanigel ig
It's not fiction but a biography
Maybe it'll help u think like him and his ideologies
i have sad novel it name is Kite runner
If u rlly want something then A Little Life is supposed to be a pretty sad book. I have but I just didnt get to it yet
FR that was my first read and i cudnt find any book better than that. Ive read at least 10 more after that but nothing even comes close to silent patient
Does anyone have recs for books with gud plot twists, thrill or crime?
The Silent patient
Thanks @wispy atlas
Your welcome!!
has anyone read thus spoke zarathustra by nietszche???
Definitely agree
Apparently the inmate is really good. Its thriller
cornell method, but i don't always have the "summary" part. you write down questions in the cue column thus it promotes active recall
same, I usually skip the summary section too. On the left side page, I rewrite the most important things/stuff I want to memorize in a easier to understand way or making up little jokes or mnenomics to help understand it better. Its more helpful for bio classes, not so helpful for coding classes.
does anyone here have an e-reader?
Yo, guys, anyone want to add to Goodreads?
+. I have onyx boox edison
So, if somebody wants, here is my profile
https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/160538558-std
what're your thoughts on onyx boox? i heard it had chinese spyware
Hm, i haven't heard about it. I'm using this device just for reading books/manga/taking notes and not store any sensitive data like passwords or smth. Other than i feel great with this reader and i like the experience, which i getting not only from device directly, but even from package, accessories, etc.
Onyx is Apple in the world of e-readers, I think)
you should definitely look it up then...
I don't think, that it's a big problem. Device's OS is android, so we can simply download some open source permission managers and setup it for disallow some access to spy services
And, i think, their devices are quite safe, if you doesn't log in into his services like cloud and into google services. So, we can simply setup f-droid, for example, and use open source programs
def replacing the default OS is the move
Hm, maybe it's could be the reason. But, as far as i know, Onyx is the only e-ink company that base their devices on android
Kindle and pocket book devices based on their own os and some old versions based on linux, so we can't be sure, if this companies including some spy software in their products
the company is based in china, so the CCP is likely involved. It probably has some spyware programs.
for example: people have reported there's high network activity with remote servers (without user consent)
if you still want to use the device, i suggest you look up some YT videos to turn off protocol and maybe change default OS
Maybe you're right, but i think, it's too much worries for device, that i use just for reading. If i want to store some private data, i will be store it into my linux laptop or my phone with customized access rights
yea, just something to be aware about, you know
i'm curious to know if james scholz knows about this
It's okay, thanks for warning 👍
James using windows last time 💀
Doesn’t he have an onyx ?
Yeah, he has literally onyx collection xddd
I’ve been thinking about buying the onyx boox 10.3. supposedly it’s better than remarkable
But privacy issues are a deal breaker for me
Maybe installing some mobile linux distros is case, but optimisation for e-ink screen will be so bad
Hey, can you recommend an audiobook from Audible? I'm looking for something about productivity.
Yes
which one? i was thinking of getting Kobo, still doing some research
heard kindle has ads
The one I'm using it does not have ads ig as it's a old model
Do you want to buy a brand new kindle or like any ?
yea i'd like to get a new one
and do you think it's really worth it?
Tbh you can go for second hand ones as well if you want to tho
It depends if you like reading all time for instance while traveling ,or anywhere then it's good. And for pdfs too ig .
I think thats a separate version thats cheaper
yeah I've been looking on 2nd hand apps here, they're way cheaper but i can't be sure
and i still dunno which one
oh ya i also have seen some versions that don't support pdfs. i wanna read it on pdf
Just get a second hand one and check if it works for you simple
its an extra 20 to turn it off
its not bad
i got mine for $120 USD without ads
Currently reading "Billy Summers" by Steven King.
what do y'all think about Steven King ?
This is my second book, I skipped the first one for it was too scary
oufff there are too many options
kinda hard to decide
he sure does know how to build up suspense in the most mundane of situations
ads there is no problem, just you have another wallpaper when u turn off the kindle. i think its worth it if u want to have less physical books in your room, or want to read more cus you are outside. depends also how prices are in your country, cus you could save lot of money by buying a kindle (in long term, buying books in kindle you'll save money) some old books can be kinda lame in amazon, i'd prefer buying those in physical tbh but the most famous ones there is no problem
you can also read manga that there's in amazon, but idk how comfortable could be for you to do it. also kindle haves closed ecosystem like iphone (that u only can buy amazon things), maybe there's better e-readers. you can also send yourself pdfs and more
has anyone read "the art of war" by sun tzu, hows it?
I actually thought that ads were popping out while reading, then it ain't really an interruption. I've seen that people prefer Kobo over Kindle since the battery seems to be better than Kindle. And as for the price, i don't really want something advanced like the one with a big screen and pencil which is quite expensive but I think there is a new coloured version of Kobo and it kinda caught my eye
i have a kindle u can put in your pocket and u can read really good. yet, kobo could also be a good option
you got a link?
np but i think its the kindle paperwhite 11gen
cool thanks! imma check it out
"what if
someone makes a movie about email romantics
and both have cancer
the male is sending an email to the uni for dropping out, but the email accidentally goes to the woman, and they start talking
they never shared phone numbers
the man is from UK and the female is from France, or Belgium
they talk a lot about uni, and then the women asks him to not drop out, and he does what she says,
somewhere in between they meet, they make some love blah blah
atlast, the female survives, the man doesnt
and the female dies due to depression"
are there any books on this?
This is gonna be one depressing book
Fault in our stars is the only mainstream movie/ book with a kinda similar plot tbh
yee, i read that, but I wanted something different with it(its my alt)
i'm looking to buy a basic eink tablet or ereader i can use to simply pirate books and my college textbooks on for when i go to college. I might want to take notes on it but it's not a priority. If someone could recommend one it would be great
eink tablet with a pen cost a lot, if you just read on it, you can consider boox, kobo or kindle
ok
get anything w android youll love it
reading this atm
also got a paperwhite, ive never bought an ebook i think
its uhh
pretty easy to pirate
idk about the rules on this server so dm me i can explain
pdfs are kinda shitty, but can convert to epub. other than reading books, i sometimes like converting long markdown files to epub e.g. code docs and stuff
nvm, ig its allowed here #book-recommendations message
ive seen some applications where you can crop the sides of the pdf to make it easier to read
it says it got more leds, is it really worth it to have more leds or nah?
ehhhh, i mean i only ever use the leds at night with max warmness and at like 8/24 brightness
my kindles like 3yo i think
Do u suggest I read the book : deep work or it is overrated ??
Is this "book of the month" thing still going on?
Deep work is good.
Can you tell me what is it about
hi , can i get some recomandation of book on the topic << How to learn>>
The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin
Mastery by George Leonard
Anyone here who has read BLOOD MERIDIAN? Whats your opinion about the historical accuracy of the nature and characteristical personality of the people mentioned in the book
Are the bounty hunters and tribal nature of the indians accurate
How much do you guys read in a day?
10~30 pages
10-20 pages
6-60 pages
15-20 ish
tho, if I read on public transport, I tend to read 30. Reading on the bus is hella underrated
I usually do a mix of reading and listening. On a regular day it’s like 40-60 minutes audiobooks and 20-30 pages of regular books
I feel nauseated trying to read in a moving vehicle lmao
at least one chapter a day :)
except when you miss your stop because you're too focused ahahahah
worst thing is having to stop mid page bc you have to get out lol
worst thing is not being able to finish a chapter
or have to stop bc of sth before you immersed
any recomendations when it comes to ereaders that can transfer and read epub files, don't have screen glare, and are relatively small?
phone size?
hisense
boox palma
inkpalm 5

is anything better than a kobo clara hd around it's price range i'm looking for the same thing pretty much
Do you guys know what a dystopian novel mean?
I only feel nausea when reading on a car lmao

used to read off my ipad but thinking of moving to physical copies
thanks i’ll check it out
Ebay

Borrow it from shopkeepers
If you’re from India I can suggest bookchor, it’s a marketplace for secondhand books
lol
Issa blackmarket
Bruh it’s for secondhand books lmao 😂
A blackmarket for secondhand books?
if any one here from PK suggest me similar balckmarkets yo , i want to visit there just for the vibes
Nah just look up a summary on the internet
its a hard read, very boring in my opinion
I've just started it, probably about 60 pages in. So far lots of examples of real world cases.. I assume its just setting up to get to more of the 'meat' around actual practices.
It’s a fantastic read, I have no idea where the boring book statements are coming from
john green books are really good
one of his books was also turned into a feature film
the fault in our stars
Overrated imo but you'll probably need to see for yourself if you like it
heyy i've once asked here which e-reader i should get now i've to decide between two options: Kobo Nia or Amazon Kindle 2022 welpp
a quick glance at the specs tells me those of the Kindle are better?
I think they are also in the same price range.
I have an older Kobo Libra and very satisfied with that one.
can anyone help
me find the pdf for Landmarks in Humanities: 2024 Release by gloria k fiero please i can’t find it anywhere

Tr
guys i own a lot of books but i never find time to read them and if i have time i spend it on listening to music or watching videos on youtube i primarely do this since my reading speed is bad any tips on how to read faster and actually understand what is written?
i love reading, i read while studying or eating, u can understand what is written faster n better when determining the perspectives
u should only get book if ure gonna promise to read it
reading faster loses my enjoyment sometimes, u should read based on ur comfortability not try to read the book fast
ok thank you
youre welcome
I’m not sure if this helps, but when you read, work, study - do it with the intent you’re going to teach it to somebody.
accountability

has anyone read Talented Mr Ripley?
I watched the netflix series first and then read the book; I found the series way more engaging in terms of how Ripley is displayed, am I stupid or is the series better than the book?
but then i would have to find books on other sites
You can get almost any book on Zlibrary
I’ve read the first talented mr ripley book and while i did like it, I didn’t want to read on to the next book. but I haven’t watched the Netflix series
they have a great telegram bot, annas archive is good as well for books not on zlib but way slower
Yeah I use the bot too
But it's like a personal thing others can't use yours
And making one is complicated
- check my bio 😀
You're welcome
Damnnnn that's good
It is
Oh I highly recommend you to watch the series; even if you're already aware of the plot, the whole scenography and acting is really good
what books are you guys reading this week/month?
Finished 'Atomic Habits', yesterday I started with 'Deep Work '
Have any of you read six of crows?
YES
Is it good
Have any of you read Digital minimalism by Cal Newport?
I only recently finished it :)
I really love KOreader, what do you guys use?
I'm going to read it once I finish deep work. How did you find the book compared to deep work?
I read physical books. To take a break from screens.
I haven't read deep work yet but I really liked it!
It's really good imo
I'm reading mamba mentality by Kobe Bryant right now but I'm planning on reading deep work next :)
i just started animal farm by george orwell
really interesting book
good luck reading
Stillness is the Key - Ryan Holiday
I am going to a bookstore and I am a beginner

Atomic habits for beginner
If u haven't read it yet

Hello! I'm looking for book recommendations that makes you feel a rollercoaster of emotions while readingg
Gone Girl as a thriller, and Project Hail Mary in scifi
if you haven’t already, i recommend reading ‘A Little Life’ Hanya Yanagihara
Done ☑️
The saddest book that humanity has ever witnessed
hoooly crap the way I cried…
i warned y'all but who listens to benji
do you have any more recs? I've been in a reading slump lately & need something to get me movin.
Hey!
I am currently reading Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and would like to discuss chapters as I read
If anyone would be up to read along or discuss some chapters, feel free to message me
i think you should read "Four Thousand Weeks -Oliver Burkeman"
I wanted to read it a while back & never got around to it. cal newport has a fire interview with him & that recently resparked my curiosity, so thanks for the suggestion. it slipped my mind.
i dont quite follow cal newport, but definitely the book is underrated imo.. let me know when you're done with this one, i've some more recs for ya 🙂
yessir 🫡 honestly cal's podcast deep questions is my absolute favorite. love the guy. but yes, I'll let you know! I'm rereading atomic habits to ease back into this kind of book but once I'm done I'm jumping on it
guys, is it really worth it buyiing a kindle? im planning to buy it next year and i heard its good to reduce eyestrain since my eyes got teary easily if i read on my phone/tab
way more worth to get a different e-reader than a kindle, because kindles are just not good
but e-readers in general could be more easy on the eyes, beacuse of their e-ink displays, yes.
ohh i see, can u suggest me what other e reader devices other than kindle??
nook, boox
Anyone read Beyond Order by Jordan Peterson?
You can read "Atomic Habits", "The Psychology of Money" and "Can't Hurt Me".
Get any tablet, customize it, and make it as distraction-free as possible. You can use the ReadEra app to read e-books.
I will also buy a tablet after my finals end.
okai thank uu
i already have one, but reading on tabllet hurts my arm if i read it too long (except if im reading on my desk)
probably skip that one
Man i must say, i just binged on couple of his videos like 4 stages and his interview w huberman.. that man knows what he is saying.. really captivating and articulate.. thanks for your suggestions
Ohh then go for a Boox e ink tablet! I think it’s a better choice than a Kindle.
yeah, I'm glad you enjoyed his stuff! as I mentioned, he has an interview w. oliver & I think you might enjoy that. they both discuss the differences & similarities in their workflows & ways of thinking.
@brisk vector benji benji, just finished atomic habits. I'll start 4 thousand weeks some time today!
ahh ookayy thanks man, ill look forward to that
Hiyaa how does the book club work? Are we reading anything in particular together? :3
Oh never mind I just saw the book club calendar.
I recommend text to speech on moonreader premium, it’s a one time payment. I get crazy eye strain even with my ereader sometimes. It also helps that you can “read” while doing chores or cooking.
ohh waitt thats a good idea, thank uu for ur suggestion <33
Can any1 recommend me a book to read that will help me ultimately study and get work done. I am in Primary school and haven't read any books and want to get started. Any recommendation would be really appreciated
did anyone read the The Unbearable Lightness of Being?
unpopular opinion: i didn't find Can't hurt me by goggins really impactful
overhyped imo
I'm currently reading, I feel it's kinda unbelievable so it's like almots reading fiction.
for me it was kinda insane, like this can't be a healthy mindset to have, but i guess it works for some people ig
currently planning on reading it, is it good?
milan kundera seems like a good novelist
The gist of it for me was "working through the pain" based on his weight loss and messed up foot during his navy seal training. What were the main takeaways for you?
Ans i could be wrong but I think the high school pool he was training at was that tik tok famous high school where they had a amazing campus and even spent money on equipment and set for a broadcasting club.
what i got from it was that no one will help you but yourself so go hard on yourself to achieve what you want, also that everything in hour life including our unhappiness is in our control, irrelevant of our life conditions and hardships we face
but i didn't like the way some ideas were portrayed, too harsh and stems from negative emotions instead of positive motivation
@brisk vector I'm around halfway done with the book. so far I love it. really got me rethinking my perception of time.
i want to get into classical literature (preferably japanese), i tried getting into it by reading noregewian wood but it was like a 1 star experience for me. i'd be very interested to read any works done by female authors!
i'm glad you love the book, keep it up man
what book are we currently reading?
That's a good one, go hard to achieve what you want
Results are results idk. I also got the sense of that as well. Its like, I hope he's happy and not angry and angsty all the time.
Knowing you'll be homeless and out in the cold can be a good motivator vs knowing you can always rely on mom and dad to save you from whatever you get yourself into.
anyone who read the poppy war triology?
yess I’ve read all 3 books, it’s an amazing series!
wanna know too
I dropped it after like 150 pages. Main character was really annoying
i'm on the last book
traumatised me but its one of my fav series
why's thatty
ikr it’s really dark but so well written and worth the read 🩵
the first book in the series is my absolute favouritee
mine tooo
do you know any other similar book?
I’m not sure of other books a similar genre to the poppy war but Babel which is also by R F Kuang is a beautiful book, you should definitely give that a go. it’s even better than the poppy war series
its really good actually
oh yaa i've seen that one as well. i've heard the characters are well written
and they are kinda similar to the characters in the poppy war? idk ive seen some people say it
the book is giving Kitay kinda vibe AAAAA
i've been reading fantasy only lately
my comfort genre
yess the characters are incredibly well written in babel. but it’s very different to the poppy war series, the genre is more dark academia
if you like fantasy then the throne of glass series is amazing
ive read a review about it on goodreads and it was kinda depressing lol
but also seen a lot of people who liked it
i haven't read the second book of powerless yet eitherr aaaa
for throne of glass? there’s depressing parts for sure but on the whole it’s amazing
nobody is actively reading a book with the club?
Thanks, when do we discuss them
whenever

anybody read perfume the story of a murderer?
omg yes! i love that book
yes! it's a different book, in many ways
i haven't come across a book like it... but honestly i haven't read any other books by the author. maybe i should
and i remember that it took me a long time to get through the book. the first few pages made me feel uncomfortable. i remember telling my mom, who recommended the book to me, that i wasn't going to continue reading, but she told me to give the story a second chance and so i did. when i picked it up again, i read the first half in a single day, without being able to put the book down. i don't know, there's something about the writing, about the entire story. it's just beautiful.
i read the book long time ago when i was 8th grade, it was very unique from my perspective and i wanted to watch the movie adaptation but i always forgot
currently reading atomic habits i like it quite alot but wondering what i should read next any suggestions?
the compound effect
got my first ereader kobo clara bw and im loving it with koreader
Recs of the week:
- Do it today by Darius Foroux

Feel-good Productivity
anyone read “The Sound of Waves” by Yukio Mishima? and if so what did you think it?
The Travelling Cat Chronicles?
Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective
harder than I thought
Does anyone know any books with similar atmosphere to Fear & hunger, realistic dark fantasy and stuff like that?
wild chances but I’ve read it and I wouldn’t it’s the greatest book I’ve read as Japanese authors seem to have quite the contenders in terms of legendary writers and writing styles
I wouldn’t say*
but there’s something about it that left an imprint in me but I cannot pinpoint what exactly. maybe it was in the unfolding of the exposition and characters on the tiny island but something in my mindscape changed that day in a good way 😊
it’s a good leisure read and reads like a slice of life romance
other than that I cannot say much since I read it quite a while back
💥🕺
anyone here read meditations by marcus aurelius?
I haven’t but is it good?
He's famous for stoicism if I recall
So good if you're into stoicism
I have
It's pretty good, but tbh not recommended to start with. Marcus Aurelius was already a stoic when he wrote it, and did not write it with the intention of teaching stoicism (or even with the intention that anyone else should read it), so a lot of the basics are kind of just assumed.
That being said, it's one of the mandatory books if you're into stoicism.
For your first entry into stoicism and assuming you want to read original texts, I would suggest Encheiridion (aka the Handbook) by Epictetus or Letters to a stoic by Seneca.
I started the book without knowing anything about stoicism and it's actually a hard book for me to grasp with. I'll take a look into the books you've recommended :D
Also I heard from someone but apparently for meditations its good to just open the book to a random page rather than reading it start to finish, would that be a good method?
Yeah - Meditations is essentially a collection of private notes that Marcus wrote to himself. They're not written with the intention that anyone else should ever read them. That's why they can be a bit tricky.
In regards to jumping in wherever I suppose you could, but I don't see any benefit in doing that over just reading it cover to cover. It does contain chapters so just opening a random page could probably be a bit weird. But I guess that could also depend on what edition you're using and the structure they chose for it.
As a side note, stoicism has, partly, been bro-ified. There is a lot of stuff on the internet about it, not all actually true or helpful. If you're looking around for more information, two content creators I trust are Parknotes (aka Parker Settecase) and Jared Henderson.
So true I had such a hard time trying to fully comprehend the book
Jared is pretty great

Does anyone know of any interesting book clubs that meet virtually?
no, but i am interested in joining one if anyone here would be interested in making one
same
okay if you want to join a book club you can react to this we think of creating a server or something
i don't know if it's an unpopular opinion but i find norwegian wood to be way too overhyped and not really a good book.
I don't think it's unpopular opinion. It's just a romance novel but written in an unusual way
Is the website in your about me section yours
ohh, tbh the romance didn't really stood out to me a lot since the narrator was extremely dull and characters were flat.
no
Yea that's how all his books are
i see
i was thinking about buying it ;-;
we all have our preferences, you might be able to enjoy it, though i will warn you there is heavy misogyny throughout the book and the way he writes women is not pleasant. i did go into the book while fully knowing how misogynistic the book but still the book was unpleasant for me at least. but i have seen positive reviews and some even said that they felt connected to the main character so i guess it depends on all the person reading. personally, it's not a book i'd recommend, but it's up to you.
i see. i think i've read some controversial opinions about the author
i'll reconsider reading it, i have lots of books to read before buying new ones anyway ahah
but thanks for letting me know
your not wrong i personally found it a hard read
I really like norwegian wood tbh
