unfortunately no, just a couple words, I have some friends from Arabia so they sometimes teach me sth\
ahh cool I'm from Algeria
cool cool
You can start learning the Japanese alphabet - hiragana and katakana. I suggest using Duolingo for this.
And after mastering hiragana and katakana you can move onto kanji
Do u play chess? 👀
Oh mate, thank you. I wasn't aware the books had been shared on here!
You're welcome
Any tips or advice on how to learn and acquire two languages properly? I'm learning english and portuguese, I think my english is good, B2 maybe (I hope to be at least C1 by the end of this year), and I've started to learn portuguese, at the moment I had no problem studying one language more, however any advice is very welcome
My native language is spanish btw
Hi, im sorry i dnt have advice just wanted to let u know if u have any doubt regarding portuguese i can help you, in terms of english my level is basically the same as urs
Oohh, obrigado!! ^^
De nada! También hablo un poco(o un rato? Jaja) español

Pero se entiende perfecto ;)
Aw muchas gracias!! Me encanta hablar otras linguas ^-^
De nadita ^^.
Uma pregumta, qué é mais correcto dizer: "fazer esporte" ou "practicar esporte"?
Se eu tenho algum erro em minha escritura, apreciaria qualquer correçao :)
I wanna start learning Chinese can anyone help me please, where to start, is it a good choice ....
mandarin is hard, but you should learn it if you are really passionate, if you see yourself using it in the future, or if you just want a hobby.
focus on sounds, pinyin, and basic grammar at first. the grammar is sometimes unintuitive unfortunately. (trying to learn how to write as a beginner will take a long time. i'm fluent in speaking but i can barely read or write.) try to talk with native speakers. find some shows/music or easier content made for kids.
i don't recommend duolingo because it does not explain grammar well and it focuses on reading and writing. taking a course would be the best option imo. if you can't do that use a textbook + online resources
I am looking for help to understand it, as it is handwritten 🤔
Well "esporte" is more of a brazilian portuguese word in portugal portuguese u dnt hear that word u hear "praticar desporto" but even if u use "esporte" i would still use "praticar" but everyone will understand if u say "fazer"
"Pergunta" instead of "pregumta" and "que" instead of "qué"
Also "escritura" is not a comon word for what you want to say there it would be more appropriate "in my message" so "na minha mensagem". You are doing great tho i could understand everything, keep going
I would also add a "o" before que so it looks like " o que"
@south oriole thank you very much I'll try to 😆 🙏
what ıs that?
[french] why does this sentence use 'de' instead of 'de la' before pizza?
Elle mange UNE tranche DE pizza.
I wrote Elle mange UNE tranche DE LA pizza.
i thought because pizza is feminine i would use 'de la' but i don't know
because "la" is an "article défini" and it points towards a very specific object, if you intend the object to be "some pizza", not a specific one you only say "de". If you wanted to specify which pizza (if for example there are many pizzas to choose from), you would say "de la margerita ou de la 4 fromages" for example
Hey guys, i have a big job interview in 5h at one of the big fours. It could be that they want to talk some english. Normally i dont have any problems with it but a warm-up before would be good. Does somebody with good skills wanna talk a bit later?
Pourquoi est-ce que tu utilise ‘y’? J’ai pensé que ‘y’ remplace un objet inanimé avec “à”, mais il n’y a pas “à” ici.
"y" is always used when talking about being at or going to a place
"Je vais à l'école" -> "J'y vais"
"Je suis dans le supermarché" -> "J'y suis"
"Je me rends à l'hôpital" -> "Je m'y rends"
"Je retourne voir mon ami" -> "J'y retourne" (not exactly a place, but there's still that notion of going somewhere)
However, it is different when you come back from somewhere
ie. "Je reviens de l'école" -> "J'en reviens"
i do tooo
guys, does anyone have the answer of this? thk u very muchhhh
I've got german speaking tmr and I've barely revised I'm so stressed
wish me gl 😭👍
any last minute tips would also be helpful thanks
hii, could someone help me with the meaning of *"inner carrots and sticks" *in this text? ):
First, there’s controlled motivation, when you feel you’re being ruled by outside forces like end-of-year bonuses and deadlines — or inner carrots and sticks, like guilt or people-pleasing. It’s hard to stay motivated when you’re not in the driver’s seat. Often when people say they’ve lost motivation, “what they really mean,” Dr. Di Domenico said, “is ‘I’m doing this because I have to, not because I want to.’” It's about getting things done when you don't have motivation
Inner carrots and sticks can mean your own motivations carrots being how you reward yourself and the "sticks" can be how you punish yourself @cedar bloom

Im learning italian. Im open the helps ☺️
hii, could someone help me with the meaning of the phrase in bold, please)):
Building a community of friends, even if it starts with a feeling of obligation, boredom or mild irritation at the time invested in it, is a part of how we protect ourselves and our families from the vagaries of human existence, as the writer Jonathan Tjarks wrote movingly in The Ringer recently. Facing his own cancer diagnosis and thinking about who would be there for his young son if he dies, he describes the investment of time he has made into making friends in a “life group” (...) “People talk a lot about medical insurance and life insurance when you get sick. But relational insurance is far more important.”
The good news is that even if our relationship-building muscles have atrophied, with a bit of work they’ll regain their strength. The research of John Cacioppo, a social neuroscientist at the University of Chicago, found that while loneliness and isolation build on themselves, so too do friendships and community. As you meet and connect with a greater number of people, you expand your social skills and confidence.
it means something like: even if your relationship-building skills have gotten worse, with practice you can get better at building relationships. They are using the word "atrophy" which is a biology term and works with their "muscle" metaphor, but can be hard to understand. They pretty much mean even if you are bad at making friends you can get better with practice.
they are relating this idea to: even if your muscles shrink you can work out and grow them again
tysm!! <4 this helped me a lot 🥺

Hello, I've written a poem and I was wondering if anyone could give me your thoguhts on it? It would be 20% of my final assesement grade, please dm me! (Ps: It's required to be in the style of female poet-Emily Dickinson)
Hello everyone
I just wanted to ask, is it possible to learn a new language if the only reason is interest.
I tried to learn japanese like 4 months ago but I'm not giving it priority so i keep quitting and going back. Any advice?
i think pushing yourself makes no sense cus then you defo lose the motivation to do something. i would say find a new source of inspiration maybe anime or so
The thing is I'm really interested to learn it but i don't make time for it because of college work reading and other more important stuff
@hard cedar you could make a plan to read japanese about 30 minutes a day. Its not much or anything but you will be able to build the habit and motivation required to continue
I'll try that
Thank you ❤️
Qual é a diferença entre "do, da e de"?
Ou seja, quando tenho que usar cada um deles?, eu tendo a cometer um erro entre o "do" e "de".
can anyone help me paraphrase this " In a system where "might is right" or the laws of the jungle prevail, small states like us have very little chance of survival. Instead, a more promising system for small states, and frankly even a better system overall for the comity of nations, is one that upholds the rights and sovereignty of all states and the rule of law. Bigger powers will still have more influence and say, but bigger powers do not get a free pass to do as they please. In exchange, they benefit from an orderly global environment, and do not have to resort to force or arms in order to get their way."
into something simpler? or maybe explaining this sentence in as if giving a speech to kids

In the third task a few pronouns are off (Nele sounds like a female name to me, I could be wrong though; Lasse is a male name; "Sandra, Stefan und ihre Kinder" not ihren). And in the fourth task the very last sentence needs a different pronoun
Are the pronouns with lesser in it wrong?
Only in the sentence where it refers to his mother

Does anyone evaluate my TOEFL essay?
hi, I need a piece of advice... I'm trying to start learning Chinese and I'm a little bit confused with the alphabets , do you happen to know which alphabet is the most idk popular or what do you think I should to learn
there is no actual Chinese alphabet afaik, sentences are composed of some of the thousands of characters in the Chinese dictionary, each referring to a part of speech, a particle, etc.
ok, hmm so what do you think I need to learn as a beginner ?
Japnies im in chill room

i need help! is anyone familiar with annotationpro and sppas?
thank you 🙂
helloooooo ! as a beginner, what languages can i start learning ? :0
What language are you interested in, do you have a specific goal in mind, what level would you like to reach?
Anyone can start learning any language, some might suit you more than others because of cultural backgrounds, your native language and a variety of other reasons. The biggest question is what you want to learn and to stay motivated for it. Also have a realistic image of the language and what you can achieve
You won't be completely proficient in 6 months (say C1/C2) but you can reach a decent level (say B1) depending on the amount of time you put in and the way you study.
It is also necessary to have a basic knowledge of how a language is acquired, so you don't have to be so lost
If you are studying completely on your own I would say that would definitely help you and make it more efficient, but it is not absolutely necessary.
Plus i do find it interesting to have basic knowledge of what you are doing and how you are acquiring a new language
I don't even think you have to put in a ton of research and a quick youtube search will probably suffice for most people/beginners. There have been a ton of papers written on different types of language acquisition that probably aren't interesting for the average beginner.
Depends on the person, It was needed at least for me 'cuz I was lost
I ended up realizing there's only a method: immersion through comprensible input
Or, in other words, read and listening to it
hahaha
I agree that I really like this method but it can be quite hard to find the right input. For me that's how I learned English and I tried it with German as well but it just doesn't work in that language for me
thank youuuuu!! <33333🫂🫂🫂
Do answer those questions I started with for yourself (or answer them here and maybe we can give you some insights) so that you know where and what to start
Hello! My name is Yuri. I'm learning English and can teach you learn Russian. We can watch TV series, films or documentaries together. Discuss and communicate. I think this is a good way to learn languages together.
Heey there, this is a channel where people can help others with homework and questions about languages. This is not a channel where others will make your homework. If you summarise the article I am certain there will be plenty of people willing to correct any mistakes you might have made or things you've forgot.
Remember when summarising to tell the most important points of the text.
Depending on the length and language I can, but I will do it tomorrow
Nevermind
Hello Yuri I speak intermediate Russian and would love to practice and help you with your English and practice my Russian.
Здравствуйте, Юрий, я говорю по-русски и хочу больше практиковаться. Я могу помочь с твоим английским.
Я также напишу вам личное сообщение.

Hey ! Does anybody speak Spanish ? I’m going to Peru for a humanitarian mission and I’ve no base in Spanish, I don’t know how to do 😭
Hii
Can someone check an assignment that I did for German? It’s a grammar assignment about ‘das relativ- und das interrogativpronomen’ (I don’t know what it’s called in English)
Would any native English speaker like to read and perhaps proofread a mini thriller I have written?
Hello 👋🏻 If I said, "this school is exclusive to girls," does it mean the school is just for girls or it excludes the girls?? Kinda confusing and google results weren't helping x-x
Heey, I believe that would mean that the school is only for girls, perhaps this forum post will help you out: https://ell.stackexchange.com/questions/200070/meaning-of-exclusive-to-of-in-in-the-given-scenarios
so there are actually two definitions of exclusive:
-
excluding or not admitting other things. (leaving out girls)
-
restricted or limited to the person, group, or area concerned (only for girls)
in this case, the school is likely referring to the second definition, meaning that the school is just for girls
i havent seen the first definition being used in this context
OmO Thanks y'all @nimble tinsel @ivory idol . I finally know how to use the word lol.
No problem!
Np!
Does anyone know of any material that would helps improve SAT English score??

'However, its not confirmed. It can change anytime'
'Indeed I want to go abroad to study but I cant. Its is very expensive and my family wont allow me'

Learn about different memorisation Methods.
-
Try finding mnemonic
-
Memorise in Small Steps. Learn 5 Hiragana from the same group at a time max.
f.e さ し せ す そ (sa, shi, se ,su, so) -
Read easy texts written in Hiragana.
-
Try writing them down so different Brain areas will also get activated in the learning process.
-
Practice and be patient. Can't learn stuff like that over night.
I assume it's Turkish ☺
I am Turkish and I want to learn Russian. Phonetics of Language sounds amazing. There is a YouTube channel that I love, but Russian is a bit difficult so it has a completely different alphabet than ours. If I improve my English and start learning Russian as a second language, will I have a hard time? If anyone has experience and is willing to share, I would be glad.
I'm not sure how English would help you with Russian 🤔 Unless you want to improve your English to use textbooks in that language of Russian.
I don't have experience as a learner but I'm a russian mother tongue so if you have more questions feel free to ask 👏🏻
Thank youuu☺️🙏🏻🌼
Hello everyone ! Anyone could help me with german?
I could try, what do you need help with?
I could also help you 🙋♀️🌷
You shouldn't really be worried about the alphabet. You can memorise it in a couple of days cause it has a lot of similarities latin. And if you want to start learn Russian i would advice you to forget about nonessential grammar and lean towards speaking and vocabulary cause it will be more fun and even most Russian natives aren't that good grammatically too
yes, the grammar seems really complicated. thank you for your advice💐💐💐😄🙏🏻☺
hey does anyone know a good place to start when learning Japanese?
check the pinned messages 😉 you'll find advice for language learning in general and resources for japanese
Is the goal here just to know how to pronounce the words? Or know what they mean?
I don't quite understand your question...
Do you want to learn pitch accent ?
Like when I read the kids manga or news should I just know how to sound out the characters or should I know what the words themselves mean?
Do you perhaps mean the reading of the kanji?? I don't really get it 😭
If you learn kana you will learn how to read and sound out the syllables at the same time, no?
Yes. I mean that I'm at the level where I'm still memorizing hiragana and if I read those manga/news, I won't know what they're talking about. Only how to say the words
Oooh then I think I get it, if you want to learn the meaning of words it's best to read the bullet points under anki
there are many anki packs that have useful vocabulary
you can also look for workbooks that have vocabulary lists
If you are at that level, Mangas and or News will be a number too big for you. But that doesn't mean that you can't read stuff. There are a lot of websites that provide you with very basic and simple words like ぺん f.x (pen).
Is anki a book?
I would suggest you start with a book where you learn vocab and grammar at the same time. Most likely those books will provide you with Texts for your current progress level
Its an app where you can train vocabulary
If you want to read Japanese and understand the words you have to learn them first
AnkiDroid Flashcards app?
I think so
Do you know any or recommend any?
Yes, ,,Genki".
I've attached them in my linked message as PDF so you can get it for free
Oh cool thanks
There is also another social media kind of thing called amino. They have a japanese learners group that is pretty good as well
Hi, I'm a native Spanish speaker, I can help you with your doubts
Oh thanks! I’ve no base, I don’t know where to start
Well, you can learn it on your own by using a grammar book and a website of Spanish, for example. But it might be better to go to intensive classes if you don't have much time left before your mission.
Languages : Arabic (Native),French (Native) English (Fluent), German (beginner),Spanish( beginner) also i want to learn Japanese and i want American friends to practice English
I’m using the app Duolingo, I learn a few words but yeah I’m gonna do that !
I think duolingo is great to start and get to know the language a little bit but try to expand to something else that has more depth and just keep duolingo on the side as an extra. That is at least how I treat duolingo because it often doesn't have enough depth and veriety
I’m French too, But I went to America in a host family for months. Isn’t like real American, but if you also want to practice with me, I’m in !
Okay, thank you
I agree
sure
Agree. Duolingo is the best platform for learning languages. Also watching movies in your chosen language (but with english subtitles if needed) helps i think
Hello everyone ! Anyone could help me with turkish?
heya! I want to pick up conversational Hindi and French over the summer - anyone have any advice for self studying?
Hey! For French, I think it’s a real complicated language (even for ourselves, I don’t get it sometimes 😂 ). Maybe as we said before, start with Duolingo ?
As a French person, I really agree with you lmao. If I can give an advice to foreigners, don't waste your time learning all the fucking tenses 😭
After I took the university entrance exam, I decided to learn French. but my pronunciation is very bad. Do you have a suggestion?
1.Passive+active listening:
- listening to natives a lot: even if you don't understand everything it's so that your brain recognises and processes the sounds passively. That can be with podcasts, radio/tv/ youtube content, and not a slowed down comprehensive version that is use as pedagogy (this is for easing yourself into the basic phonetic/phonological system, but it's slightly different when you talk to actual natives).
-active approach: consuming the content, for example watching a film that you do not intend for leisure only, giving your full attention to the speakers and pausing it every sentence or so to repeat what has been said, with the tone and rythm.
- internal/external speaking
-if you want to get comfortable at first mouthing the language of your choice you can speak to yourself in that language so words and prodody flow better when you'll get to speak with other people; i find reading out loud also really helps with having a more natural diction
- (and you probably expected that) speaking with natives as much as you can, even if it's just at first ordering a coffee in a french speaking café; create a habit of regularly speaking, and ask the people you talk with to correct you as much as needed, so that you can progress faster
Hope this helps 🙂
You can recommend french podcasts, movies, youtube channels etc. if so can you message me? @maiden wolf
Je connais pas tout en terme de temps ptdrrr 😂
Moi non plus, la moi de primaire à tellement souffert avec ça 😭
Listening to natives ++++++++++ and maybe put the French subtitles
Le moi de bac + 2 souffre encore 😂
If you want to speak with us, with pleasure!
tysm ❤️
i don't have time to listen to podcasts nowadays and i don't know what your intrests are aahh
if you're interested in, let's say history, i can recommend the youtube channel "Nota Bene"; a science channel i'd say "dirty biology" or a book channel "Audrey-Le souffle des mots" but there are sooo many more and i don't know even a small portion of them ahah
tysm
for radio you can listen to anything on "france culture"
As a French YouTube channel, maybe Dr Nozman can be good, because it’s a scientific channel but it’s very interesting! And Hugo décrypte for informations
tysm
Guys, Any advice on learning Chinese . I find it interesting but I don't know where to start

i'm gonna be honest i've been speaking lots of english throughout my whole life (i'm fluent) and my mind just goes empty with this
was the blank before the 'a flat'
the basics learn pronouns, basic grammar, most used verbs and as you learn you'll notice what you gotta do better, use anki for flashcards so that you can review all the new content throughout the time
@rancid fog
I’ve started with Duolingo, but I’m gonna bought a basic grammar book
would the phrase "be careful that" or "don't forget that" trigger the subjunctive in french?
Anyone here wants to help me with basic French? I want to learn it
Note: I'm a native English speaker (British) so I can help you with your English if needed
Thanks
I do

I’m not sure if the answer can only be one word but if not something like “Sara lives in London, in a flat” or “Sara lives in too small of a flat” would be my best guess at possible answers? but yeah this is a weird question
Thank you!

Could a native english speaker give me his opinion on something I've written please ? It's supposed to be a synthesis of 5 documents on soccer but the imposed format makes the introduction a little unnatural with all the information (date, journalist, source...) that is to be included 😅
This is the introduction :
[ accroche en 6 mots ] Football is more than a sport.
[ présentation en 154 mots ] (doc. 5) It receives broad media coverage and public interest as the Daily Mirror’s July 8th 2021 front page shows, with ¾ of the page dedicated to soccer news and the remaining space to Covid and a Corona ® advertisement. (doc. 3) Not only that, it is also a highly lucrative marketing opportunity according to Harry Lang in a Campaignlive.co.uk August 14th 2017 article. (doc. 4) Some of that money does go back into soccer as September 14th 2020 Forbes’s list of the highest-earning players illustrates. (doc. 2) In his article from The Guardian of July 2nd 2021, Clint Smith factors in the supporters and soccer’s spiritual relation by telling the story of empty stadiums during covid and euro 2020 following the lift of restrictions. (doc. 1) However, Jon Dart warns, in an adapted version of his July 6th 2018 The Conversation article, that this kind of attention may come with some downsides when the sport is only watched and not partaken in.
[ problématique en 7 mots ] To what extent has soccer influenced society ?
I can help you in Turkish

Is it “you too dushnyi”? Or “you are too dushnyi”?
you too
or like thank you so much dushii

This is slang, referred to a person who is “too serious” in a situation when everybody is joking.
if you mean "души" then its the plural form of soul
but i never heard it being used with you too? 😭 its hard to figure out when its not written in Cyrillica 🥹

C. Complétez le texte avec le pronom qui ou que .
Caissière, c’est un métier que j’aime bien, mais qui est difficile et très fatigant. Difficile ? Par exemple, il faut connaître tous les codes des fruits et légumes_______ le client vous présente. Fatigant ? Il faut faire très attention aux gestes____ on fait _______ et _doivent être très précis. Il y a des gens ne sont jamais contents, c’est vrai. Il y a aussi des clients que je connais bien et ________ sont presque des amis !
I couldn’t do only the ones in the middle . Thanks !!!
Par exemple, il faut connaître tous les codes des fruits et légumes que le client vous présente. Fatiguant? Il faut faire très attention aux gestes *qu'*on fait et qui doivent être très précis. Il y a des gens qui ne sont jamais contents, c'est vrai. Il y a aussi des clients que je connais bien et qui sont presque des amis !

What’s the difference between ne pas (verb) and ne (verb) pas and pas de (infinitive)?
I think, for me it’s all the same it’s a negation, “ne pas…” and “pas de…” are more like an order for exemple in a museum “ne pas prendre de photos”. Ne…pas is more in a negative sentence like je sais —> je ne sais pas, tu me parles —> tu ne me parles pas. Even for me it’s complicated to explain as a native 😂 hope you’ve a little bit understood

"The course helped me read and write English fluently." Like this.
I don't understand :<<<
you don't understand why "can" is not useful in this sentence ?
here in this sentence can is not useful because Helped is already saying that you can do it so can is just too much

I started to learning English and i have a question what is the difference between the prétérit and the past participe ?
Because i was see a video and the tutor used the preterite and when I used the past participle, the meaning of the sentence did not change
if you are talking about the simple past and present perfect then The simple past tells us that an action happened at a certain time in the past, and is not continuing anymore. present perfect however is continuous in a way, so it happened in the past and is still happening. for example i slept late yesterday. i have been sleeping late lately.
Ok well seen, it better now

Hii could someone help me with the words in bold? I'd like to know what are they trying to say🥺 "Have you ever asked these types of questions before renting or leasing or purchasing some services from mining service-related companies? Or do you just pick them as an industry norm or as a result of favourable references? Do you genuinely need their help?"
Norm means a standard or usual thing. So Industry norm is a standard in that specific industry or field. So i assume that they’re asking if you chose them for the reason of them being a standard option. Favorable reference or just reference in general is something you prefer. So did you choose them because you wanted/preferred them specifically
