oh my 😂 , i just saw hegel too.. i wish i was this cool
just pop philosophy for me
I'm not cool
I have Lacan though
If there's anyone to read
I'd recommend Hannah arendt
Great political theorist
never heard of him, just looked him up and he's a psycho analyst?
Yeah
Really influential for french theorist like deleuze
He was a pop star basically
During his era
Extremely fucking arrogant though
i just added 'human condition" on my to read
lol i like arrogance
Let me find a piece of the first seminar which I found funny
i like kanye, nietzche.. really arrogant people
i like psychoanalysis, freud, jung, nietzche.. but sometimes i wonder how valid it is, ive been reading it for years and i just wonder if its improved my life, i want to move towards behavioral psychology now
Honestly depends on who you read, I know literally nothing about jung
I wouldn't consider Nietzsche a psychoanalytic figure though, that something out of his bounds. From what I heard, he can think of the unconscious but he isn't that systematic
There's a great lecturer by the name of Gregory Sadler
If you ever need help understanding any large figure
wow, what a long winded way to call me stupid😂
oh yeah i think i watched him when i wanted to understand 'the stranger', cause i finished that book and i was like wut
The guy has a half hour hegel series
Covering the entire phenomenology of spirit lmao
but i think the stuff he's reading is a bit fancy
Don't know where you get that from, but okay.
?
What do you mean by fancy
That he reading the text thoroughly and attempts to give a comprehensive analysis?
lol nah i mean the author doesnt think much of others
i mean the work he covers, i feel like hegel and kant arent for the casual reader, i might be wrong tho
There for anyone
but ive seen critique of reasn and i doubt im reading that in my life time
You shouldn't brick yourself because of a philosophers difficulty
really, sheesh
Yeah, it's not some magical thing you're doing
No one understands a philosophical text the first time going through it
Like shit, I've read Kant's metaphysics of morals twice and still don't know what happening in the second and third chapter
Anyone who says they understand the entire point of the text the first time they've read it, has a stick up their ass.
lol yeah i get that, and sure its something i can probably understand eventually, but i think you really need a taste for philosophy to put yourself through that
yeah i remember someone saying nietzche is a 'light read', either they didnt get it or theyre lying
The end point here is that you shouldn't get discouraged because the thinker is difficult, just do what you find interesting and if you don't understand who cares.
Like no one is going to quiz me on fucking hegel dude
Or Kant's epistemology
yeah i get you
HAHAHAHA oh my well i guess im part of the dont know how to read people 😭
this is actually kinda interesting to be hearing from you two discussing abt philosophist and all, i have only been really into reading since the end of last year
and ive learn so much more in terms of understanding different perspectives, but ive actually been entering a reading slump and all
what do you all do if you ever get into a reading slump? i wanna go back to reading and ive been getting into it but idk i just dont feel that enthusiastic abt it anymore
From my experience, finding someone else to read helps me. That's the reason why my bookshelf is spread throughout 500 years, and has a mixture of completely different perspectives on things @hasty bough
You shouldn't lock yourself in a specific category unless you really enjoy it.
What do you think about this book?
wow amazing just love it
Really? Can you tell me something about it?
I know literally nothing about stoicism
I need book recommendations
lets read it together?
ive been meaning to, one thing i thought atomic habits fell short on is changing habits of mind.. and for me, my thought patterns are not good.. so i wanted to read something that would help me regulate my thinking habits.. maybe try combine atomic habits with meditation if possible lol
what do you mean
obviously i havent read the book but its about a school of thought called "stoicism", it was written by an emperor, and its all about how you react to adversities.. i guess a one line summary is like "you can't control what happens only how you react to it"
atomic habits is about changing behavior habits, i want to change my thinking habits, i guess how i react to adversities/anxiety, being more grateful generally as a person.etc, i think meditations will help in this regard so i have it on my reading list.. are you planning to read it?
Lol 22... you?
19
Yo my name is Ardi too I’ve never come across someone with this name lol
i'd recommend looking into cognitive-behavioral therapy books, or just cognitive... if you're interested in the hehe "ancient times psychology" like psychoanalysis, you can get yourself familiar with aaron beck's works
adding to the psychoanalysis, is as valid as proven by science, meaning that some concepts have evidence and are useful in clinical work like hmmm really simple concept that what happens psychologically to a child matters in adult life orrr attachment theory to some extent
a matter of "if it improved your life" is an assessment of what your values and needs are and are you able to comfortably meet those
there's no one way to improve or one image of being the best person ever
oh and i also definitely recommend "thinking, fast and slow"
but having in mind that some experiments in it might be outdated, but the general idea is cool
sorry if i got too psychological there, im in the middle of studying for exams so im on fire:)
what is th ekey of the book thinking fast and slow? Is it about increasing intelligence or something?
not at all, it's to raise awareness of how our thinking works
basically some thinking is done faster than other and it has its implications and reasons
can you give an exapmle? does it touch something for improvement?
fast thinking would be stereotypes, slow would be... basically anything conscious
im not sure what you mean by improvement, i think you can improve by being aware of your limitations
i understand, thx
if ure interested in improving your cognitive abilities, i recommend hansen anders' books, for me they were the best self-help ever
i read them in polish, now i see that only one was translated to english, "The Real Happy Pill: Power Up Your Brain by Moving Your Body"... but other one was
"Skärmhjärnan: hur en hjärna i osynk med sin tid kan göra oss stressade deprimerade och ångestfyllda" in swedish, if u find it in your language hehe that would be the best one
but he also has a ted talk https://youtu.be/a9p3Z7L0f0U
Do you want to be more creative, boost your memory, mood, focus and stress tolerance? Then get moving! Physical activity has remarkable effects on the human brain. In this talk, I will show you how – and why – we have brains that are built for moving.
I am psychiatrist and MD, earned my medical degree at Karolinska Institutet and received an MB...
i dont know, you would have to find it urself
Thank you man
sure!
Haha, nice. Where are you from if you don't mind me asking.
i watched his google talk last year, i thought it was good, we also learn daniels work in finance because you have to be aware of heuristics to make 'rational' investment decisions
im not sure what i mean by this but i guess its to minimize suffering, if i still suffer in the same way i did 2 years ago and i feel the sources of suffering are things i could work on then i can say i have failed to 'improve' you know, but since you do psychology related stuff what do you think of archetypes and just psychoanalysis in general? , what are the practical applications of attachment theory, the ego, id.etc, its fun to read about all these subconscious things in my mind, but are these of any practical use? like do psychologists use these in their work?
i also have seen Jordans lectures and for me the most 'practical' are those where he admits most of his patients have life problems rather than mind problems, most of them have just been dealt a bad hand by life, he recommends you read 'the myth of mental illness' in the same lecture lol, all this has made me question psychoanalysis, why did you call it "ancient times" btw, what is the relevant material now?
My friends study psychology and they also say this, the id ego superego, Freud etc and all these psychological theories about mental health but in fact many people would be much better off with some simple lifestyle changes like doing much more exercise or even just committing to new things such as a new sport
Lol yeah the best thing I've done for my mental health is gym and karate ..
that's really interesting
Facts I started Brazilian jiu jitsu a year ago and I’m so much better at talking to people and less socially anxious 😂
It’s like fight club
But without blowing up banks
Lol it's funny I joined karate for my anxiety.. it helped alot
if youre suffering for so long then i recommend seeking a psychotherapist... to answer what i think of archetypes and psychoanalysis, i myself like to use it for myself, but it has no usefulness in my work with patients; i dont know about other countries, but psychoanalytic psychotherapy is still prominent in poland - but psychotherapy is a distinguished field because there is more important your relation with your therapist rather than modality
even what was proven by scientific studies 10 years ago might not be relevant today or might have been debunked - psychology is facing a replication crisis and older works should always be taken critically... i called it ancient as a joke to show this haha
to see whats relevant today in psychology is to treat it as medical field, meaning getting to know the diagnostic classifications (DSM-5, ICD-10) or just a scientific field if talking e.g. about experimental psychology, so checking scientific papers like metaanalyses and reviews
that will be all i have to say, without studying psychology there might be many questions unanswered and without professional's help there's a limited extent to which you can help yourself:p
thanks star.. appreciate your insight.. I'll read your recommendations, besides maybe the scientific papers
yeah I definitely want therapy once I can afford it.. it's a luxury in my country unfortunately.. unless you clinical depression/anxiety.etc
Vancouver Canada
Are your parents from the Balkans?
There from Bangladesh
interesting
"Ikigai: The Japanese secret to a long and happy life", how is this book?
does anyone have any recs mystery/romance books?
hi :D any recommendations on theorical books about nerodivergency?
Looking for Alaska
here as well :/
"The 7 habits of highly effective people " Is this book good to read?
sherlock series - sir arthur or Lucinda berry's book, great mystery psychological theme
One of the best books I have ever read was "Man's Search for Meaning" by Victor Frankl. Two ideas that I have carried with me from that short book are 1. No matter how bad life is objective, you determine how you feel at that moment about it, and that is the ultimate freedom, and 2. Meaning happens at the intersection between you and the world. Those are two profound ideas! Good luck ♥️

Journey to the West Vol 1 - 4 Translated by Anthony C. Yu, the entire series is an allegory for enlightenment and each character represents a human emotion. This series has also inspired many animes, such as but limited to Demon Slayer, Naruto and most notably Dragon Ball Z with Sun Wukong (the Monkey character in the book) being a direct Inspiration for Son Goku in Dragon Ball.

@white spade i bought the book didn't start it yet. Right now i am at 5am club by Robin Sharma.
@halcyon jungle is Sherlock series all relate to psychological genre ? I am looking for psychological genre books, please recommend me some
@robust bluff Great. Habits becomes your believe (basically believe is what you do daily so if we change our daily habit we can concentrate/change our believes also become more confident on our believes)
@past widget interested in this genre too, tag me too please when someone recommend you
@silver ore life changer, it's helping you clear up the confusion of real life (work related mostly goals). We are in constant struggle in; what we like to do and what we could do. Balancing Life , work , dreams. Chinese/japanese they mostly focus on balance. Due to their martial arts, samurai, ninja backgrounds. So all life books are good.
Sherlock series more like adventurous ig, if u're looking for psychological elements in it, i suggest u should read more thriller books like Lucinda berry or like the woman in the window by A.J. Finn
Can someone recommend English contemporary thrillers? Somewhat like Gone Girl or Girl on the Train
heyy, has anyone read the 'surrounded by idiots' book? i want to read it because the title itself is interesting, but i know people are criticizing it a lot too? anyone has any experience with this book?
Does anyone have any recommendations for gay teen novels - but less mainstream and with their relationship not the focus of the story? Ty ☺️

:wut:
Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green was pretty good. Idk if it is considered mainstream
thanks haha
id love to discuss more about books if you'd like
Yeah sure! Tbh I haven’t been reading much lately, just non fiction for my personal statement for university
But I liked sci-fi and fantasy, especially Dune series and Neuromancer
What sort of genres are you into?
if you enjoyed neuromancer Id recommend Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson if you havent read it already
I haven’t heard of that I’ll check it out!
I've been slowly making my way through The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and I'm loving it.
does anyone here have any comic books to recommend?? or maybe your favorite ones? I'm interested in any genre (•‿•) thanks!
dude i love one punch man!! God Slap looks pretty good👌👌Will definitely check it out!!
demon slayerr
read it already but thanks!!
I just started reading a comic book entitled The Sandman by Neil Gaiman and this is some good stuff🤌
any junji ito is 🔥
fax💁♀️ 💁♀️ i literally devoured all his manga lol
I recommend for the people avid of knowledge on the human behavior, to read Dosotveiski and more particularly "Crimes and punishments".
Robert D Hare book about psychopaths entitled Without conscience is so fascinating! highly recommended
If you like sci-fi check out the OG foundation series by Isaac Asimov, currently tearing through it and it’s awesome
Ao ashi, if ya' like football.
I must read a book for Englisch named black swan green by david mitchell, do you have any study guide that i can use. I need them really hard. Or do you know someone has one?
yo that anime is so good man have you been keeuping up to date?
i haven't read the manga tho is it any good?
Yeah. I read the whole thing until chapter 292.
Unfortunately, it went until[or is up to date] chapter 295 in japanese. I need to start learning japanese now. >_<
The manga is pretty good. Some of the parts are better in Manga, then anime. (like Fukuda, Hana and Ashito). The emotions and plays are much better there.
what do you think about this book
Hey I’m reading the code breaker now and loving it! Does anyone have any genetics / structural bio books which aren’t too dense to recommend? The double helix by James Watson seems interesting!
Also any books covering topics like venture capitalism, private equity etc, not textbooks though just non-fiction
heyy, i saw this book going around, its called 'Cain's Jawbone'. It's a reader-detective book and apparently, only 4 people solved it. I really like the concept - reader has to figure out the murder themselves. But I would like to start with something easier than less than 1% success rate... Any recommendations?
I’ve read some “whodunnit” books which sound like a similar concept but are shorter stories, they’re still challenging but not too difficult. They’re fun to try and solve and are usually quite clever
Also some Sherlock Holmes books have the same concept
could anyone recommend books by japanese authors, like murakami, toshikazu kawaguchi etc?
Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto pretty good
seconded! maybe Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata as well @scarlet flame
Has anyone read any books on queer history, specifically drag history and could recommend me some good books?? Especially books that don't have a judging tone or make fun of it?
i would suggest going through Alok Menon's GoodReads account for reccomendation
Is there anyone who has read “12 rules for life” by Jordan Peterson?
i like any book from murakami he’s an amazing writer. another japanese author is hiro arikawa and i’ve read her book called the travelling cat chronicles and it’s pretty nice
i recommende Breaking out of Homeostasis - change my life this books, is not best selling, teh author is the owner of blog startgainingmomentum.com . is goldnugget
Oh i'll check it out
Oh ive heard quite a lot of it. Must be a good read!
Oh I see i'll check it out and whats ur fav murakami book?

i’m reading that one rn too!!
Hi, i was wondering did u end up reading stolen focus? I want to buy a book because im tired of looking at screens and so reading online doesnt work very well for me and i am thinking of buying that one but would like an opinion
100% recommend it. although i listen to the audio book when i walk and dont actually read it physically
the audiobook is the author himself and he is very passionate and engaging about the topic so id recommend the audiobook a ton, but you can still read the physical book just fine as well
Ok thank you! Im just kinda like scared i will buy it and then end up with a book that dsnt captivate me because my attention span is kinda short ahah also because english isnt my main language and then im reading and although i understand the majority of the text there are always a few words here and there that i dnt and because of that i end up a little bit tired but back to the attention span i think that is the point of the book showing why and perhaps even how to improve right? So yeah i think i will give it a go either i buy the book or i will try to listen to the audiobook. Thanks!
yep of course. this book lays out why things in our everyday life distract us and the way things are around us cause us to live a life full of distractions and he tells how to combat it all
Ok thank you : )
👍👍
