I suspect we are the reborn pieces of the King who used to be the Prince but became the King and then the Corrupted King and who eventually exploded. Some parts ascended and now have returned as sky kids. And some parts are still residing in the kingdom, the winged light. And the core part of the Prince is the kid we meet when we die.

I think the Prince, being a creature of light, developed a habit of consuming light to become larger and more powerful. Like, eating manta burgers

So in a way we are also reincarnations of past mantas too

I've had a similar theory that Krills were born from dead Sky people that got stung by darkness plants. The plants have a parasite inside of their stings that develops once the person is dead.

Thats like 1/15 theories about krills being people I have heard. I don’t personally think krills are corrupted skykids/ancestor spirits/light creatures/crabs. But everyone seems to love the idea.

Symbiote theory
Neutral creatures that are capable of harboring sparks inside their bodies are light creatures. Neutral creatures that can harbor dust are dark. Like you can see this in game.
Mantas, jellies and other light creatures have sparkly things coming out of them when we come near. Dark creatures harbor the dust, which need light to survive.
Some neutral creatures didn’t do this, like sanctuary crabs, and they remain a subspecies. This is because they never came into contact with the dust and they weren’t compatible with the sparks. Other creatures weren't compatible at all, and those are neutral or extinct. We don’t see a lot of significant neutrals because as Bricky said, the eden explosion made it so that only polarized animals survived mostly

This theory means that saying “light creatures” or “dark creatures” is no different than saying “flying animals” and “walking animals” instead of “birds” or “mammals”. I'm not saying light and dark creatures don't exist. I'm just saying that is a very crude classification method.
There are many different types of sparks.
First, there is the normal spark, existing all light creatures (here spirit mantas and butterflies don’t count) they are “sneezed” by the host at other creatures in a method we call the “call”.

Then there are the stasis sparks. These sparks hold the light-recipient in a weak stasis beam while transmitting light. Different types of stasis sparks live in different types of creatures. For example, jellies and mushrooms have yellow stasis sparks while mantas have pink ones
Mantas, jellies, and fungi are compatible with stasis sparks. These sparks keep spark-recipients locked in a weak stasis while they transmit light. Birds don't have these, that's why we can't "ride" them
Butterflies are more like light-robots, they are 100% fire and made by the isle elder as we see in the cutscene, they're not alive. Spirit mantas are probably just one of the hallucinations in vault

Skids can host both sparks and dust, but sparks are a bit more compatible.
All dark creatures shed dust. Peaceful sanctuary crabs don't shed dust and aren't aggressive, all other crabs and krill do. This suggests the darkness dust is more like a parasite than a symbiote, like a leech. They make creatures more irritable, and the creatures try to get it out. I do believe the dark creatures are pushing the dust out with their immune systems. How would these survive natural selection u ask? By eating the other kinder creatures.

Then somehow, your soul (? Light?) gets absorbed in that mantel made of dark diamond

and that light kid you see before ascending is the prince

it could be that its story of the trials the prince went through to be coronated king; or it could be the prophecy of skids appearing to go through the trials
