Me explaining the darkness keeps the spirits safe till they can be saved by us to you. Three statues in eden, before sacrifice, have no darkness on them. These three statues crumble when we get near them. The darkness helps keep the spirits in a state where we can help them.

Calamities raged, dark creatures took form, the elders fought against the darkness but there was so much they could protect. They end up giving their lives and using their power to create the current stationary stage of things which need to be solved but just saved some realms.
