I think the candle wax collecting mechanism is mostly gameplay balancing. You could explain it as "the skykid gets tired" but in the end the real reason it exists is because TGC wants to control how many candles you can collect in a day. If it was directly proportional to how much time you spent in game then you'd have people who are online 20 hours a day and have thousands of candles after a week and you'd have people who only have time to do dailies and have no real way to get enough candles for anything. The current system lets you get 5-10 candles a day or so relatively easily but makes it hard to make more than 15 and pretty much impossible to get more than 20

There isn't really any explanation to what's happening as such. You can search for Sky concept art (and visit the Sky concept art gallery in the SkyFest area on the day when it's open), to get a sense of what themes they had in mind when they were making all of that, but in the end it's all meant to be up to interpretation

Basically the two big themes in Sky are: 1) all life comes from the Light and returns to the Light in the end; 2) long time ago people learned to trap Light in what we refer to as "darkstone" to power various technomagical contraptions

Part of the reason they were trying to do that was to fight the Darkness, but in the end it kinda created more and more Darkness since it consumed Light in the process. So in The Two Embers Part 1 we see the end result of this civilization. Part 2 will presumably focus on how it all began and got to that point

There isn't that much more winged light compared to a year and a half ago. Seasons like Moomin and Blue Bird added areas with one winged light each, but seasons like Duets and Radiance didn't even add that. And quite a few seasons haven't really been adding spirits as such. Radiance and Blue Bird "reused" some of the spirits from earlier seasons, there was a Season of Nesting that had furniture instead of spirits, Revival had mannequins... no idea how any of that will come back as "Traveling Spirits"

Yep, I think your best bet for getting more winged light is keeping up with the traveling spirits. Outside of that... have you been to the Nine Colored Deer area? You can enter it through the "collab elevator" area and it should have two or three winged lights

Sorry if this question is dumb, but it's been bugging me: is what we do in the seasonal quests set before or after what we see in the episodes?

The seasonal quests act as if we were a person living at the time, and they make us have a first hand look at how life was like and how crappy life was at the time

The episodes and the quests in my view are separate to the plot, the quests are mainly to make us understand how life was like there

Some of them seem to take place slightly before and some slightly after. For example, the first quest clearly takes place before Chapter 1 ||(because we interact with Tender Toymaker)|| but the third quest clearly takes place after Chapter 3 ||(because we run into the dead manatee from Chapter 3)||

There are also some questionable continuity issues with the season quests and it's unclear if we are meant to understand them as being Dusk Ember's (the series protagonist) point of view or just some random unrelated kid who lived around the same time

But in all seriousness, Seed of Hope is a spirit from a collab season so they probably can't just do whatever they want whenever they want with them. Even though Aurora most likely wouldn't mind, TGC would probably still have to abide by whatever the terms of the collab were, and it was probably easier to just not include that spirit

Seed of Hope also seems to have been part of the war/rebellion/whatever that was, which wasn't really part of the storyline of the season (it most likely happened long before, or possibly after)

||Welcome to the being confused club. There is a chance that Part 2 will eventually pick up where Part 1 left off, but there is also a chance that it won't. We do know that in the end all Ancestors died, and the season quest suggests that ||||they died shortly after|||| but strictly speaking we don't know what happened||

Going by the memory of in Isle of Dawn of the Ushering Stargazer, and the people of Sky being sexless, I think it's possible that children aren't born so much as they fall from the stars and are taken in by adults. I get the impression that the Sky civilization is a "raised by the village" sort of culture.

in my opinion i see the citizens as (at least mostly) as human as irl humans are, but alef is a protoskykid and something else entirely

whats the reason why when we play though vault no rockets that when it comes to the level that represents forest it SHOOTS up, unlike other levels where the elevator takes its time

Why was the Dusk Ember making candles?

i think they saw that when they were running away from the shepherd they saw a stray candle and saw a broken pipe that could give the light to ignite the candle

then they grew up and probably learned candlemaking through old murals, then learned that with the motes of light being collected it could temporarily make the crystal fibroids a little better

so they forged a candle with those motes as a way to mitigate the circumstances

you know what though, the more i think about two embers the less sad i get and the more confused i get probably because i dont watch it too often

everyone has some light in them (even if they're neutral creatures!), but if the amount of light runs low, then crystals would start growing on you

you can see it in-game, too:

Regarding 2 embers part 1, the darkness and the krill attack were separate issues, right? To me, it seemed like they were overharvesting light in preparation for the krill attack, and the darkness, the disease that spread amongst the people and animal, were the consequence of the overharvesting of light.

Created a summary of what basically happens in The Two Embers Part One! And heeeeres the text wall

Summarized Explanation

The Last City is a large central district at the foot of the mountain. Inside the mountain is the Vault of Knowledge, which extends all the way to Eden which is at the top of mountain; connecting Eden and the Last City.

The Last City is part of a much larger region that existed at the time known as the Golden Valley, which spans from the foot of the giant mountain and all the way through the mountain range we now know as the Valley of Triumph.
Most of the Golden Valley has been torn apart by the Darkness, and refugees have fled from everywhere, being pushed towards the Last City, where they are being contained in a regulated district by the Ruler’s police state. There, the Vault Elder can manage the refugees, study the darkness plague on various victims, and decide what to do.

The Ruler has created many machines that can ward away and hold back the darkness, but these machines are powered by Light. Since they are running out of Light, they’re beginning to harvest the Light out of living light creatures just to get the resources needed to keep the darkness back. As the darkness pushes the soldiers and refugees to retreat further back into the Temple that leads into the Vault of Knowledge, the Vault Elder is having their scholars archive the memories of any dead people’s they could find, for unknown reasons. It is revealed in Chapter Four that reliving the memories of the fallen has the ability to not only bless the dead, but manifest Light itself into existence.

As for where the story is heading now at the end of Chapter Four and Quest 4? There is no way to be certain of anything. ❤️ 🕯️

We could imagine manatees, for example, to be omnivores; eating both scraps of raw Light substance as well as perhaps fish. Even outside of that, if we are to consider this attraction idea, I personally thinks it makes the most sense within your idea that they were tested to move towards charged Darkstone. 🕯️

you play as a newborn lightbearer with no memories, thrust into a world overrun by darkness. You, and others like you, don’t know much about what caused the collapse of the civilisation that came before, other than the darkness being responsible somehow.
as someone with the Light, you have unique abilities, most notably being functionally immortal. there's a big emphasis on community, how as a team you and your friends can achieve so much more than you can alone. your soul, per se, the thing that keeps you alive and lets you be revived, is a small blue orb.
darkness is bad at first, but we eventually learn through lore than it's not inherently evil, it's a balancing force opposing the light. Only someone using the darkness was the one to cause the collapse, not the darkness itself. darkness is also associated with memories, allowing one to peer into the past. It also has a calcifying quality, associated with crystals and pointed shapes. and sometimes scary, chitinous creatures.
of course, in opposition to the light, which is round and bright, and promotes growth of plants and nature. It can also, in certain forms, power technology. it's warm and can be associated with flames/the sun.
in game, lightbearers are highly social with emotes to express themselves and fashion is the true endgame. But the grind, oh the grind, don’t you love doing the same thing repeatedly for loot. hey at least its better with friends. Also there are seasons and season passes and yeah this is just standard game stuff.
also theres a place called the last city.

Dusk just revived what was long lost. One of Q&A on recent sky exhibition shows that Resh/The King is able to forge candles too.

There is candle ritual on the lost temple mural and camera even zooms at it to make it important.

It could go something like this, starting from where we left part 1:

• the flame bringing ritual attempt, either succesful or unsuccesful

• actual shattering, elders being thrown into a void, including Resh

• Resh-Alef meets Stewie in the void, them being in full light creature/winged light form now. This would be the first instance of pity room coming to existence. Maybe not winged light yet but something close to that.

• branching from this, Stew could become this supercharged maybe thanks to the flamebringing ritual or/and being blessed by megabird

• Stewie shows Alef (still in void) that there is still good in this world, making Alef starting to remember all his childhood. Maybe Alef closes eyes and when he opens them again, hes back with Stargazer and Voyager.

• The first episode either ending here or all above being played in much faster pace, maybe five minutes max. But I think whole first episode dedicated to that makes more sense. Theres one “extra” episode in part 2 and one “missing” in part 1 after all.

And the finale would be Alef/Resh accepting there indeed is still good in this world, sacrificing himself and releasing all the light back to megabird. Unknown if Stewie would play any significant role in this but I can still see my theory of soul of Resh, body of Steward being applied here somehow.

It also plays homage to the Sacrifice concept art.

The sacrifice statue is also the same as the one you see when ascending to Orbit. And theres two of them. Just like there are two embers.

Given how our own husks become abandoned by our own spirits, I definitely don´t think these are last players because these husks are permanently there, together with souls inside while ours pretty much vanish. Something is very weird about them that isn´t connected to us as players.

Kinda makes me certain that what we do in Storm Lock is literally saving the direct descendants from the King´s sacrifice that were the very first to fall into the lost world, able to save others but unable to save themselves because being the first, there was nothing at the summit after the Shattering. Just darkness and death.

That is unless they were sent there to save the spirits of the Elders, paying the ultimate price for it, as Elders were said to be "asleep" when we start the game.

The other realms aren't in bad shape like GW and Eden as we see in current day, but very likely weren't safe to roam around in or was difficult reaching to other realms due to darkness [unsure what their state was like due to never seeing a scene of it]. We know some ancestors traveled through golden wasteland in its bad state from the base game spirits memories. I can see a scenario where there were smaller groups living in other realms in hide, the overall most protected place with most populated in numbers/established city was the last city/eden

Darkstones are power source for many magitech things in kingdom and not all of them are used to drain light. They might wary in potency or it depends how much they are charged or how they are forged. The darkstones used in memory lantersn can be still harmful or they can not be, we dont know that.

The others have animations, while the player’s husk simply doesn’t. While this is definitely interesting, I don’t yet feel it’s concrete proof, as they don’t feel it’s important to make an animation for your statue when you’re likely not going to be in that 2-second cutscene.

I have my own personal bias to defend, of course, and I should acknowledge that, so we can process this slowly and accurately. More pictures and more evidence are never a bad thing towards investigation 🕯️

You know what makes this even better as well as tear-worthy? Every time I stopped at a spirit, they proceeded to give me a big hug and since the line involved such characters like Boromir, Barbossa (PotC), Julius Caesar ... 🥹!

They are definitely not as big as shattering memory ones, because those are massive, everything is massive there, even elders and crabs. In compare with ancestors and surroundings, they seem to be about the same size as the present day ones.

Have you noticed how the child at the end of chapter 4, who the Stewart gives the first candle to, appears to be the same as the child who was interested in the crab toys the Steward was selling in the marketplace during chapter 1.
Again there are loads of differences here that speak symbolic volumes.

Dark creature vs lit candle
Need vs desire

Both sparked the joyous upwards eyes in the child and steward, and crafted by the steward.

We also get one of the early preview pictures of Sky shared by TGC in the angled candles lighting one another, and what that means ingame about becoming acquainted, and seeing eachother as they truly are, releasing them from shadow.

I love how many callbacks there are in this film, and how deeply rooted into Sky culture they echo.

Possibly that means that the kid we hug in Eden is Steward, which is why they ask us to go there during revival, if we are the reincarnated Dawn Ember, or a combination of Dawn and Dusk Embers, that symbolically recreates this scene each week we go to Eden.

For which makes sense why Lamed and Dusk Ember had to go long way on elevator before recording the memories - they had to reach Wasteland floor first to properly categorize that memory. Elders being “godlike” creatures doesnt make them immune to physical pain and things happening to their bodies.

He landed on his toes first before kneeling down. It is not uncommon to land like that during parkour.

He fell on his knees later because of lack of light, thus no energy left for fighting. He propably was fighting… something in the void all those 500 years.

I dont think they can die. We meet them in the void with no light left, propably the equal of you completely losing all wings and being thrown into pity room. They are also not in spirit form both in void and on orbit unlike other spirits who are still spirits even on Orbit.

She does this after she attempts to put the darkstone back together and fails, right? Could it be that the darkstone implements in her gloves don't have enough power to fix it and that's why she needs our light?

Oh!!! I recalled that theory I mentioned before that I had as a loremoth, that aligns with your “all of the spirits are Vault projections” idea!

When I had it, I connected Spirits to Vault projections, deciding that I felt that Projections seemed like a very important Theme in Sky. Literally, metaphorically, physically and metaphysically.
So instead of saying they are Vault projections, I slid the bar a bit back and brainstormed them as being “Projections”; as some sort of broad and versatile metaphysical term.
From there I further brainstormed that if the memory lanterns in the Vault could project memories of dead things, then the memories of dead people we see everywhere may somehow be linked to that. But where and what could possibly be projecting these Spirits and their memories across all of the realms like this!? It’d have to be something of incredible power, something huge. 🕯️

My wild headcanon about them is that they´re prisons, designed to hold their "residents" for all times to come while their "residents" are essentially criminals of the Kingdom that were condemned to such a fate, being kept there even past their demise by their own twisted perceptions.
