I have a question, I am confused about the ending.
I just went through Eden and got reincarnated.

I was under the impression that I was here in this world to help return the light to the sky and that to do that I had to go to Eden.
But most of the game I feel I am rescuing spirits already.

Arriving at Eden it looks to be a bunch of corpses who tried approaching a very dangerous rock. Why do we come here if we have already saved many spirits elsewhere? What is the purpose of Eden?

I'm not super up-to-date on the lore, but in Season of Shattering it's revealed that the elder who protects Eden betrayed the other elders and corrupted the world. It's currently unclear why we have to go to Eden, but my theory is that the elders are using us to drive back the corruption and reach the Eden elder

I don’t think skykids happily go to their deaths — they seem to be in pain the whole time from pulling out their winged light to crawling and limping when extinguished, covered in crystals. Doesn’t mean they don’t want to be here, but it’s an obligation they seem to willingly fulfill

I admittedly didn't pay a ton of attention to Shattering, but the way I read the seasonal quests each vignette shows the progression of Eden's corruption and how it impacted the land of sky. In the final vignette, the Elders are all gathered around one of the Eden shards, with the Eden elder's crown hovering above them all. Based on the layout of this scene, my theory is that the Eden elder is controlling the shard and using it to drive off the other Elders. I also believe that the elders created the Sky Kids in an attempt to find something immune to Eden.
Of course, this is just my personal reading of the lore and could well be incorrect!

This might depend on the individual. If I knew some of my kin were stuck on a mountain like this, I'd try to go regularly. They could even make a game out of it to cope with being in the most hostile area in the kingdom !
Some skykids could be too traumatized to go for a while tho.

I wrote a fic called We Are One & I Am Two wherein Sunset's state as one or two individuals was up in the air. I leave it ambiguous from the second person POV to the unanswered question by the end of the fic. regardless of one's reading, you could conclude that Sunset is so intricately linked to themself that they can't be easily defined. a lot of lorechat lads have read that fic and adopted my interpretation.

I first began wondering about that because of how Sunset Elder(s) are referred to in-game as "Elder of the Valley" and in concept art only ever with one name. sometimes devs refer to them as the Valley Elder twins, but this is still confusing since in text, Sunset is referred to in the singular when there is visually two of them. there are also pieces throughout the game that hint at some sort of split or divide yet shared power between Sunset. so perhaps they have something going on. despite appearances, they're not easily distinct as one or two individuals.

Sunset's liminality has been remarked in the lightblur phenomena as sandwich, wherein light connects two or more bodies or entities. Sunset is an extreme case where their light muddles the boundaries, if any, between themselves. I personally see Sunset as a grilled cheese sandwich, their light melted cheese melding two slices of bread together and cannot be separated without ruining it.

A basic summary would be: An ancient kingdom fell due to a disaster in the Eye of Eden, trapping the spirits in darkness and leaving them unable to ascend. skykids cleanse the darkness from the spirits and send them to the stars, where ancestor souls belong. the stuff about the kingdom itself is a bit scattered but they were able to use the power of light, later coupled with power diamonds (like the ones in the forest gates) to perform magic and to power their technology. most agree that the overuse of power diamonds, or “darkstone,” led to an imbalance between light and dark and is responsible for the downfall of the kingdom

There are 2 main eras in the pre-game Sky world

Fire Era - Ancestors and creatures respected each other. Darkness wasn't rampantly spreading. I think Megabird might have been worshipped more too, or something.

Darkstone Era - Ancestors discovered and developed darkstone. Ancestors had to do unspeakable things to light creatures to make darkstone faster. Creatures started getting corrupted. The war in Golden Wasteland happened (though no one is sure if it was a civil war or an ancestors vs creatures war).

That's the basic past of Sky. The more everyday-life parts are pretty much shown through seasons

I want to hear your theory.

My theory is that we've actually seen the elders before they were the elders

1. Isle elder
2. Prairie elder
3. Forest elder
   4 and 5 the twin elders of the valley
4. Wasteland elder
5. Vault elder

I have a headcanon about the spirits with elder mask can be temple staff who help manage and run their realm's temple. Ceremonies, fund and stuff. The mask is like some kind of uniform. Like real life temple usually have lots of staff inside, and the elders are like their boss.

Vault has lots of staff (I think all those memory cubes take a lot of maintenance). Levitating Adept seems to have special "Employee of the year" head tag.

I headcanon these spirits reflect their elders state of mind ! And the spirits in the starlight desert would reflect how they were seen.

For example, Beckoning Ruler is bossy, but Refusing Voyager is protecting ancient murals in their memory, so maybe the Isle Elder had a bad reputation of demanding respect when all they wanted was to protect traditions (perhaps in the face of darkstone usage and/or the sedentarisation of ancestors)...

a lot characterize Sunset as the goofy silly Elders too busy fighting & playing among themselves to lead, but considering the grand Valley of Triumph, I see Sunset as very responsible, a reliable authority. they are the one who loved the ancestors the most, doing the best to ensure their people's wellbeing and relishing in culture hence the booming entertainment and sportsy population, but they had a special fondness with their disabled peoples.

Civilization falls due to the Eden Diamond exploding (like in shattering q6) & every ancestor dies and is petrified, along with the elders getting trapped… somewhere. Our job is to restore everyone’s light and free them so they can ascend and rejoin the stars like they’re meant to.

I can say more but it ventures into theorized territory and idk if you’d want to start off with just the obviously canon stuff right now

both skykids and Elders are fallen stars — you see skykids are born from a shooting star that lands at Isle/Homespace and Elders are fallen stars depicted from the Isle intro cave. As for what exactly they’re made of:

My Working Theory on the Composition of a Skykid
–clothing, hair, masks & other cosmetics made of light.
–a humanoid physical shell made of some magic-induced earthen material (i.e. clay, stone, ash, charcoal, meteorite) that has a hole in the chest and eyes.
–this hollow shell is full of light, such as winged light and neutral light.
–their cape, a manifestation of winged light.
–their flame, manifesting as the light in the hole in their chest and held outside their bodies via a red candle.

You could look at Snoozing Carpenter where dizziness is a symptom of exhaustion, hunger and/or a concussion (if they fell during the crash), so likely the ancestors died in different ways

This is something I’m still debating myself actually. Previously, I assumed some spirits had in fact survived. This would explain why they need to scavenge for resources or make their own.

However, this assumes that living conditions in the areas mentioned weren’t already bad pre-disaster. Abyss could’ve been scavenging during the Wasteland civil war, when refineries were abandoned and their resources were left behind, free for the taking. Assembly could’ve been stranded during a massive flood in Forest, one that left the ground unstable for long after, hence why it caves in so easily in miner spirit memories.

I’m playing around with the idea that the second is true and that all spirits got petrified instantly during the disaster due to connections-with-their-elder reasons. I’m not entirely sure yet, but it could be the case and is compelling enough to at least consider.

Of course, it’s still entirely possible that those seasons’ events took place post disaster and they’re struggling to survive. I’m just mentioning this as an alternate possibility.

I should also mention Enchantment because it revolves around a similar storyline of spirits struggling to survive in a harsh environment. I don’t really see it as a post-disaster season, but more of what I mentioned here as well, where the environments in each realm were getting harsher before the disaster. If the Enchantment crew crashed during the Wasteland war, using the same logic as Abyss, they would’ve also been stranded in a desolate and abandoned area as krills and darkness encroached further on the world.

The difference between them and Abyss is that Abyss sought out these abandoned places to loot them, but when Enchantment crashed into one…

Exactly, it's more accessible to all levels of people, with various levels of schooling. We can assume Vault Scholars are likely well taught, but farmers in Daylight Prairie might not have needed to know how to write.

• Wasteland was once a farming realm similar to Prairie, then as darkstone started getting used more, it became the realm where mantas were brought and harvested.
• Because of this, it is the realm where krills started first appearing and appearing fast, as well as darkness pollution overall
• Military gets thrown together to fight them. It’s very ramshackle to begin with, as they expect originally to defeat the krill quickly and then disband. however as the years drag on it gets more organized, with new ranks and subgroups for specific tasks, as it becomes more clear the krill are going to be a constant presence to defeat. Hence, the whale war masks getting more complex with designated ranks. (I can explain this one with a graphic! I don’t think I’ve talked about it here before)
• Some Valley citizens get either drafted in or join on purpose, possibly due to good pay, being tied to Wasteland, etc. at this stage, it is still very much a war against dark creatures, with ancestors not being attacked
• Dusk somehow gets corrupted during this and unconsciously uses orange light to control/compel some of the soldiers into helping them attack basically everything they can, like krill aggression. They function like remnants of mantas inside a krill, separate and yet to some extent the same entity. (Numerous things in this paragraph I can explain if necessary)

For a long while, I've had a theory Sky's realms, each of them presenting a facet of life.

Isle is a vast desert, empty, yet slowly we are introduced to the games mechanics... [Yes it acts as a tutorial], but I think it presents a new life.

As we walk through the cave, wall paintings depict things foreign to us. Ancient structures like hidden, and as we explore we discover there is life in the desert, whether old spirits and butterflies.

It also seems we are neither the first nor last to travel the deserts, as remnants of other travelers remain [buried boats, tombs, and grottos].

[I'll post the rest of the translation when I'm done, but keep in mind this is a theory and my interpretation. I'd be interested in other view points.]

It could also be new experiences(?), as when you learn something your mind may as well be a desert until you start uncovering more about the things you want to know.

I was enamoured by yet disliked how hiveminds were often portrayed in media as this all-consuming force that stole one's free will and individuality, but the having all the knowledge of all the entities it consumed was cool. hence why I deem those conformist cos it wipes out individuality and consciousnesses for the singular conscious. collectivist hiveminds maintain a lot of those qualities of common hiveminds like the ability to reference all the memories and thoughts within it and a conscious entity that is borne of them all, but the individuality and autonomy of the beings within it remain. they form the collective of many consciousnesses.

so, Bea, to answer your question, I don't think the Vault is a hivemind nor an artificial Megabird cos there is no mental community there – all the memories are stored within the memory cubes, but as far as we know, they don't communicate with each other. they are separate. it may store a lot of information, but that information cannot directly interact with each other. a hivemind has those connections.

it would be more that a hivemind is a search engine, able to summon all the information relevant to its query. the Vault is a library composed of physical books, the pages full of text but materially silent.

Like my idea would be that picking up someone's memory cube would be like microdosing megabird. I’ve always thought Vault was built fairly late in the timeline, both for mural reasons and it being so massive and technologically complex; it would make sense if its creation coincided with when light started to become more and more rare in the world due to darkstone and related pollution. Kind of like not being able to access something you desperately and innately need and so you make an imitation of it yourself.

The perspective I’m thinking from here is more of a telepathy(?) type deal than anything humans could experience, which implies memory lanterns kind of imprint the memories in question on the mind of whoever accesses them. To humans that sounds scary, but in-universe I can see it being comforting

Okay so Alasdair you perfectly summed up how I feel about hiveminds in fiction. Yes hiveminds can be scary because in conformist ones you lose your sense of self and everything that makes you who you are. But collectivist hiveminds have a lot of potential for wholesomeness in my eyes. Imagine someone who’s always felt lost and alone ending up joining a collectivist hvemind willingly because they want to feel connected. They are welcomed and cherished for who they are, instead of being subsumed. Their experiences are validated and accepted. And if they want to disconnect themselves from the hivemind temporarily, or even permanently, they are bade farewell with warmth and kindness. It’s a place of love and acceptance, of forgiveness and family. That’s how I view the Light.

Sorry for the late reply (I'm backtracking abit out of boredom)

Those bones started a theory about a giant creature that was mostly called Whartles (Whale + Turtle) by someone here in Lorechat (it's been 2 years, so I cannot recall the username sadly) and it was speculating it could be something we have never seen with a giant tick bone shield.

But of course that's one way to see it, there could be other theories. My interpretation is that those skulls and bones 💀 🩻 in Wasteland are from giant mantas, becuase if you look closely at the hiding spot where the Respectful Pianist start you can see they are the same as the small replica we see in Vault (specifically in floor 4, where we summon the small cosmic manta despite that small skull is a lowrendered polygon).

So it could be that even if mantas seem flat they have a skulls and bones.

once i went thru the maze SPECIFICALLY to bring every single crab to the elder shrine. as it turns out the "crab in elder cutscene" thing u can do in the forest temple also works with the valley

I'm not really imagining elders would be locked by their region either; more farmers in valley would simply mean prairie elder's domain is more spread out outside the rural areas; same for the twins, it would just mean people under the juridiction of prairie would be in the area where they are worshipped the most

thinking of the elders as like, the embodiments of aspects the ancestors respect (agriculture, sports, military, knowledge...) that are linked to their realm because that's where they were worshipped the most, kinda how athena is associated to athens but isn't exclusive to that city !

when i think about animals in sky its usually stuff like "vultures would be considered holy creatures" and "light creature hagfish would be cool, their slime could be used as an alternative to fire as a light source" and "moose would totally be domesticated for fur like sheep, they even sorta fit the aquatic theme" and "the way light seems to work for creatures makes me think that, in terms of only light creatures, predatory species would be ineffective and much less common than they are in our world while parasitic species would thrive"

aside from the valley twins i do not think about the elders often. however i do feel the need to say: forest elder totally just does not like the valley twins. absolute unexplained Dislike and Mild Hatred and possibly Suspicion. the valley elders are aware of this and find it very entertaining
