That's a similar idea I had. It's clear it's some kind of mining facility but i thought it kinda looks like a feeding pit for the big creature at the bottom. Such as caging and breeding mantas to feed these beasts under the sea, kinda like a cthulu idea.
It's possible something went wrong that caused some chaos to happen and the facility sunk due to these big creatures? We know krills eat mantas too. The actual corrupted Darkness hasn't affected this area somehow especially with it being in distannce of the wastelands.

That would have been because your camera was angled down. The staring mechanism for swiming is the camera, the joystick is simply how you move forward. If you dont want to swim down but want to look, make sure you dont touch your movement joystick
