Yeah, which is totally okay, but if you're looking to avoid social contact in a game designed with social contact at the heart, it's hard to understand why you'd find fault in the game for that. I love puzzle games something fierce, but when i want a social experience, i'm not going to look for that in candy crush. In reverse, if i'm playing final fantasy xiv, i'm not going to get mad when it's expected to do group content. Same for a multi-person puzzle in Sky. Hopefully that makes sense?

Sorry, Kjtn, it ain't altuism anymore. I agree strongly that it started out that way, but just look at it now. it's about stuff, getting more stuff, and wondering when the next stuff will be released. Watching the discussion, just in this single channel reinforces that for me every day, and unfortunately, the game encourages this now. That's not to say that some players genuinely do play with altruism, but from my observations, the game lost that mantle over a year ago. I agree with you that goal of getting people to play together has largely worked, and worked really well. It's amazing. I wish TGC would stop throwing around the "altruism" word so cheaply though, because to me, it's devaluing the real meaning of the word.

It's interesting to see that comment from Jenova about pets. Early on, we were asked about what we'd like as pets, so it's surprising to read that very strong response. I guess I've never played all these other games that have died. I'm not a 'gamer' as such. I remember asking very early on for a pet because it seemed like a natural fit to have a companion you could travel with when there is no-one else around. Remember, that for some people, being social doesn't come naturally, and is actually something they aren't comfortable with. I get most of my enjoyment from exploring and playing on my own. And when we started to see doors and other mechanisms that required multi-player use, it seemed like one option for the people that feel more comfortable with solo-play, would be to have a companion, like a pet, that could assist in those quests, mechanisms, etc. Thanks @empty inlet for that quote though; it was really interesting to read.

So @crisp plinth comments that pets often become a mark of social status. I can imagine that, and watching my own kids starting to play Animal crossing, I can see that there too. But isn't that the same as all the "stuff" we have in Sky. If you have the swanky mask, or hat, or cape, then you're better! Or certainly that's how people seem to be treating it. So many here ask about the invisible cape, and what better example of a status symbol. I’m glad it’s not in live.

Given the drive of people to get stuff, the size of the friendship trees was inevitable. I’m surprised that this was not realised long before live launch. I know I have about 5 pages of friends in beta, and really, most of those were casual encounters. In live I have a single, incomplete page, and that is more than enough. Even some of those players are not playing anymore. I’m content with that though. The ability to have masses of “friends”, like on Facebook, just encourages people to collect friends just to get hearts.

I’ve used the block in beta to trim the tree, but it’s not very effective.

Back to the pets briefly. As I, I the real world, get exercise as I walk my local streets during this isolation period, the one thing I see the most of, is people out walking, with their dogs. It’s a social thing to do. People meet, keep their distance, and their dogs are enjoying the time out, the chance to see other dogs. It’s lovely.

I see altruism every day in here, from the people who answer questions in question channels to the ones offering ubers and runs in looking-for-live. To people who leave encouraging emotes on screenshots and fanart

I’m sorry you’ve been missing the altruism in the game and community. Of course people get excited about cosmetics. But I see so many players spending time and energy helping others out. I think it’s been especially apparent with the recent Android release and all the wonderful community members who’ve spent hours upon hours helping out new players both here on Discord and in-game. It’s really inspiring to see, and imo using the word “altruism” to describe that kind of generosity does justice to the word- it doesn’t devalue it.

Also I kinda am in the camp of no-pets-please. After going into the lore of the game, finding out that butterflies were crammed into jars to make power diamonds, the mantas and possibly other big fish... I feel like forcing animals in this game to be with us to use them is... Slightly unkind. Sky kids would be perpetuating the cycle the elders and spirits did by using nature and animals for their own self serving needs. Or to look cute/cool.

Having a friend or an altruistic rando help open doors/recharge cape builds connections between people, while leaving nature alone and letting the land heal from what the elders did to it.

It's kind of ironic seeing one person claim the game is altruistic and the very next comment is about how to get the thing.
But on a more serious note, being someone who is currently hanging around a lot in the Questions channel, I would say that at least half of the questions are about how to get certain cosmetics, hearts and candles. So Peter isn't all that off in his commentary.
I think some of you were perhaps not around when the game had its worldwide launch and the very first thing that happened was people opening heart trading servers to get ahead of everyone else in the cosmetics game. Many of us oldies tried to argue that the game's core was altruism, but to these new players - who had not been part of the development journey - Sky was just another collectors game.
I have always said that I think the intent of the game isn't clearly communicated, both when it comes to plain game mechanics and when we look at this intended altruism. There is perhaps a reason to not cement the purpose, but let players just play and interpret however they want. But sometimes I wish there was a more outspoken statement that we could point at when new players ask what the game is about.

Or a more pessimistic addendum: maybe people in general are just materialistic.

Yes there's a lot altruism in this server but what if we don't have all the encouragement to be friendly and helpful? What kind of community will emerge if it's driven by the game?

I’m not saying that there isn’t an element of materialism to be found. Once again, of course people get excited about cosmetics. And yes, there are definitely people out there who don’t care about things like kindness and generosity. But to say that the game is so far removed from that that it devalues the word is to ignore the countless examples of altruism that players show every day. And I strongly disagree with the implication that wanting to obtain items somehow prevents altruistic gestures. I love collecting cosmetics! But I also love helping new players and gifting hearts to people. They’re not mutually exclusive.
Not everyone experiences the game the same way, but I see many players who get more from the game than simple materialism and quid pro quo.

I think it’s entirely possible and reasonable to “explore and help others do the same” and “get All The Things”.

I can say the community vibe on FB vs here is similar, yet different. Discord for some reason has such a wholesome helpful feel to it. Whereas the various FB groups I’m part of there are helpful people, but it seems to be more about “look at the flashy thing” “see what I did”

The game encourages frienship building as a primary focal point but it's not the only factor of the game and certainly shouldn't be enforced as the one true way to play. If people wanna collect cosmetics and solo run the game I don't see why we should look down upon that. What I often see here when this topic comes up is some sort of thought policing, as if we're not allowed to feel disappointed. We all have different expectations and hopes, sometimes because we've been here from the start way back in 2018, sometimes for other reasons. Old and new, we should all be allowed to say these things without being called salty or bitter.

I think the reason we’re experiencing this massive shift in what the community feels like right now is because of all the new Android users. To be clear, nothing wrong with a bunch of new players. They were bound to cause a shift though. They’re entering a pretty well-known game. The iOS launch was large, but the game wasn’t already this famous project making its rounds at awards shows. People who first played with the iOS launch were mostly old beta testers, TGC enthusiasts, or just randoms who saw this brand new game was launching, and at the time there wasn’t a lot in it. Android users are starting on a popular full fledged game with many maps and months worth of past seasons. All of them are basically looking at what we iOS players have going “Oooo shiny.” I’m not gonna lie the community has already been kind of shifting in this direction. (The $20 swing made that abundantly clear) However I don’t think it’s at such a depressingly different state to what some have described. I’m sure that once the new season has passed and Android players aren’t tripping to get something interesting outside of the base game, we’ll see this material craze die down quite a bit. It’ll still be there, but nothing like what’s happening now. I’m actually not bothered much by the shift though, this is the nature of cosmetic-based games. My own opinions on that kind of game aside, I’ll just try helping people regardless of what their ideals are, or what I wish their ideals are about the game. Honestly, what do you guys who’re disappointed want TGC to do? Like what would you actually want them to do about it? Just for them to stop throwing around words like “altruism?”

I’m late to this conversation but I feel like I have a little to add.

I think that Sky’s design is amazingly successful in encouraging altruism. I won’t say there aren’t players who only play Sky ‘materialisticly’, they’re plain to see if you look for them. I would say, though, that sky’s playerbase is not a monolith. There’s all kinds of players. Some motivated primarily by materialism, some by altruism, some by both.
You might point out that Sky isn’t perfect at encouraging altruism, but I think that’s a pointless criticism, we know nothing is perfect, and TGC know it too. They frequently talk about how they’re committed to working until they make their dreams for Sky into a reality.
What seems unique about Sky to me is that out of all the games I’ve played, Sky has the most players motivated partially or mostly by altruism. That’s what I love most about Sky.

But i am pretty curious about collecting all cosmetics so that i am more enjoying this game that getting boring. The point is getting boring here is everyday grinding candles in the same 6 areas but that is the feel of getting cosmetics that i want.
