Personally, I think the red robe is prettier. But, the white robe (also pretty), obviously has more power, automatically starts recharging as soon as you are on the ground or any solid surface. Still, I like the way the red robe looks. 🥰

Okay. So the big structures place was a level hub. Like 'home' in Sky. Getting there is supposed to train you on how to move, fly, etc.. And you got to play the first level. Interesting. Yeah, that would be a reasonable demo, and it would keep the files small because the first level doesn't have most of the complexities of the game in. Thanks for the information. I'm a big fan of Journey and never knew there was a demo.

I played through journey again for the first time in years. Met someone in the first map and they explored and played through the entire game with me. They even waited for me if I randomly ran off to explore somewhere.

For those thinking of trying the game the music is top tier. It's the only video game soundtrack that I played on repeat.

As you move through the world you hear a cello playing. When a second player joins your game you hear a second cello play in harmony with your melody. The music is dynamic based on your game play.

the composer recently released a remaster/remake of the soundtrack for journey's anniversary and it's beautiful, but it doesn't beat the original soundtrack imo

Journey is available for Playstation (not entirely sure which, sorry), iOS phones/tablets (though there it's made by annapurna interactive or so, not TGC. Same game, I think the other company just made the iOs specific stuff.), and computers through Epic and Steam game stores.

To get the white outfit you must collect all the glyphs. There are around three glyphs per level and most of them are just difficult to find, not difficult to collect. There are a couple of exceptions. Once you have collected all the glyphs, go back to the level hub and look at your glyph collection, and you'll notice the white robe.

Heyoo guys so I consider myself a new Journey player despite already having the game for half a year by now .
It’s bc after I completed the game in 3 days for the first time, I never really played it again. Bc I don’t really know what to do next without going for a full run through all the realms in order non stop again. And again. And again (and tbh I think that’s boring)

I tried going through the realms in no particular order but I realize that if I do that and I go back to the home page, I’ll lose the scarves I collected

Is that supposed to happen if you only completed the game once? Does that means I have to run through all the realms chronologically for a few times before I retain them if I go back home?

Idk maybe I’m approaching Journey too much like Sky since I played Sky before Journey

But I really do want to give this game a shot bc I kinda missed out on Journey when it was first released back in 2012. Also it’s made my TGC who I know makes so many beautiful games and I KNOW for sure this game is not meant to only be played once. Any feedback is really helpful

You are right. Journey came before Sky. It is not as flexible.

Your scarf gets longer and longer each time you go through. But yes, you must take the realms in order in order to continue growing your scarf. If you magic yourself back to the hub, then to another realm, it resets your scarf to the longest it has ever been finishing the realm before that one.

Yeah, Journey is not really meant to be played like Sky
I think Journey is best if played in one sitting from start to finish
It is an experience and, well, a journey

And yes, it is not a game that is meant to be replayed over and over and over again like Sky
it is a thing to revisit once in a while and fully immerse yourself in the experience

Every journey you go on will feel a little different, depending on what sort of people you meet on your journey (if any) and how you interact with them (if at all)
especially the last level can feel vastly different, depending on if you enter it alone or along with another traveler

The more I’ve played Journey, and I usually like to play it chronologically through each realm, finishing the whole game. I always hope to meet another player who Is looking for the power-ups, so that they can get a white robe. The game is much more fun in a white robe. You can find ||οοb|| areas more easily and explore them endlessly. If you give up too soon, don’t try for all the achievements you’ll miss a lot of the fun.

Yes. I played Journey for years, and I picked up Sky a couple of week ago, when it became available on the PS5. Sky is Journey 2. But it's also Journey with Massive Multiplayer, and Journey with real money, and Journey with a framework for continual changes (seasons). And Journey with annoying white candles which are always in the way when you're trying to do something. Some of those changes I don't care about. Others annoy me.

Yeah. In Journey, to get the best power-ups and most elite clothes you just have to play the game through a few times while keeping your eye out for glyphs.

But to be honest, the biggest difference to me is the social element. In Sky, there's a complicated annoying dance with anyone you meet, where you try to figure out what they want, or whether they're just trying to figure out what you want. Some of the people are off on their own mission and don't want to interact at all, some are pathetically trying to make their first friend so they can get candles, and some have no idea how gifting candles works and doubt they'll ever be able to afford to buy anything. It's hugely annoying.

I mean yeah IAPs in Sky makes Sky deathly expensive. A season’s pass is already more expensive than Journey. Count that w how many season’s pass and other IAPs there are in Sky, makes Sky muuuuch more expensive that Journey. The only thing is that Sky can be enjoyed without IAPs sometimes. I say sometimes bc I’m still guilty of getting a season pass lol

While playing Journey you wear a brown robe. You see various other characters in cut-scenes. The ancient elders – anyone who looks old or does wise things – wear white robes. The game doesn't reveal this to you but you can get one yourself by spotting and passing next to each of 21 glowing symbols in the game. Only when you have them all does the game reveal they're associated with a white robe. Getting most of the symbols is easy once you have spotted them, which is sometimes difficult. There are a couple of exceptions which require superior flying control and many attempts.

White wearing a white robe you appear to other players as wearing the white robe. They're meant to understand from this that you are an experienced player and can lead them to safer paths (journey has the equivalent of giant krill), hidden lore and hidden symbols. The white robe also gives you faster healing/recharge rates. When wearing one and helping a brown-robe player find a route you have to be careful not to use your extra powers and do something a brown-robe player can't do.

Not a good picture, but you can't get a good picture because by the time you can see one it's about to hit you. Similar to Sky, they're not insta-kill unless you're already running out of life. Instead you lose some of the length of your scarf, meaning you can't fly as far or survive as long without heat.

While playing the game you learn that the guardians are artificially made, and what they were originally intended for. Knowing these things does not make you happy.

I just played through the end part (snowy mountain & complete ending) I met a white robe player at the very top of the tower just before you go through to the snow. We were having a lot of fun. If you meet someone, and they sit down and leave, they may have genuinely stopped playing. Or there may have been a netsplit which meant that your two computers lost touch with one another. Journey is very unpredictable about this. Sometimes it works perfectly for hours. Other times you'll meet six people one after another and each one will disappear ten seconds after you meet them. And because the game doesn't tell you what happened, you'll never know.

I'm not sure, but I THINK that if you stay too close to where someone has dusted through a computer/network glitch, it MIGHT prevent a reconnection. When this happens to me I usually move away a bit in case. I've rarely had someone spawn very close to me.

Yes you can, any time you're standing on cloth it will charge you. If you are looking at skeletal [frozen] cloth and you need to go up, the game allows you a single flap if you're touching cloth. I've been playing since the game was initially released on PS3, I know how to get to the out of bounds mountain peak above the part where you actually lose your scarf, right before you end the journey.

Yes, the games are very similar, plot-wise, but Journey is distilled to a much more minimalistic and beautiful experience. Sure, the impact Journey has might be bigger if you play it before Sky, but I think everyone should play Journey at least once.
Just be aware that Journey is not meant to be played like Sky. Imo, Journey is best experienced in one sitting from start to finish, fully immersing yourself in the, well, journey.

You have to tinker with the graphics settings to get the max fps. I recommend setting the Sand Quality to Low though. In low quality Sand gets a kind of glitter effect which is missing in Very High sand quality.

Journey is much like Sky, you go thru the areas collecting “winged lights” (idk what is it called in Journey) and make your way up to the mountain. the landscapes are really breathtaking so i’d highly recommend going to check it out.
its multiplayer but you cant communicate like you do in sky, u can only call to interact with them

Journey has some online coop play, but it's not as extensive as Sky
it's not meant to feed off on constant interaction and cosmetics to keep people playing

Moreover, thatgamecompany doesn't have anything to do with these ports. The game was created by TGC for PS3, but is owned by Sony and all the ports were made either by them or by third parties that were commissioned to create them. TGC didn't take part in creating them, so they wouldn't be able to help you. The iOS port was released by Annapurna Interactive. I didn't mean the structure of the game, I rather meant how the game makes the player feel. Journey makes me feel alone and lonely in a desolate environment where small snippets of a once thriving civilization can be seen. This was A LOT like The Environment in Shadow of the Colossus. When I saw the long bridge in SoTC, I thought, "Hey it looks a lot like the broken bridge we got in Journey".

Just Shadow of the Colossus has other types of environments other than just being all desert like in Journey. Also it's a single player game so you're truly alone.

As rain wrote, sort-of. You can have two people playing together. But you can't organise it. The game itself often puts two people together if they happen to be at the same stage at the same time. But it will put you together with a stranger, and there is no way for you two to chat. All you can do is hoot at one-another, and cooperate in other ways.

It is multiplayer, but in a very different way than Sky. Journey is an exercise in how minimalistic communication can (and should) be to make a genuine connection.

War machine activity, like most things, is started by the traveller passing through trigger gates. There are many ways to glitch the WMs by missing out gates or hitting them in the wrong order. This often, but not always, involves using fancy flying techniques to depart from the usual path. There are many tutorials on YouTube and elsewhere. But sometimes it is just the programme glitching.

Correct. Cape patterns go only three layers deep. They stop there no matter how many times you complete the game.

The Guardians (war machines) in Journey are shown in detail in the history displays. You just have to be bored enough to pay attention to the displays. They are made by enclosing many carpets in a shell, so that the carpets can push the shell around together, and also get higher than any individual carpet can. They were originally multipurpose devices, providing transport, doing something to do with farming, and working the mechanisms for something that looks like a water pump. Some of them were equipped with lights so they could work at night.

At some point they were also tasked with hunting down more wild carpets so they could be turned into more Guardians. Later on the 'people' found themselves in a civil war. They weaponised the Guardians. Carpets were no longer set free when their work was done, the people on both sides of the war just continued capturing as many carpets as they could, to turn them into more Guardians.

At the point where we play the game, the Guardians we see are those which were used as 'terrain denial tools', which is what we use landmines for in real life. Their job is to stop anyone using a particular area of land. We don't know if they could originally identify Friend or Foe, or whether anyone they might think is a Friend is still alive.

The Guardians may still be working as originally intended. Or perhaps their 'programming' has deteriorated to the point where all they remember is that they're meant to kill. Perhaps the carpets in the guardian have been driven mad by being trapped inside their casing. If individual carpets are released from a Guardian, they are happy to be free and don't understand what they did as a Guardian.

Hi hello. I've played Sky for a couple years now I think...? Lost count, and over time the big shrimps have got less and less scary but I also play Journey quite a lot. And now I need everyone's opinion. What's scarier, krill, or guardian?

I got used to both quite some time ago, but for me it'd be the guardians. 1) bigger, 2) merciless, 3) the noises they make I find their design very pretty also though, BUT for some reason I've always been scared of giant machines floating above the ground, and guardians definitely triggered that fear when I first played Journey

Personally I'd say the Krill are more terrifying because they just don't stop attacking you while the War Machines have a limit. The Krill will hunt you down no matter what until you have nothing left.

I’d have to agree with you, I believe that war machines have more gravitas for me. Although both the krill and war machines are similar in function and design, they are vastly different in history! For me it’s mostly the implications about the ancestors… they’d seemed so mighty up until then, but just to see how the elder for that region hung their head… heavy stuff.

Although I enjoy Sky greatly, the lore paints a much more shrouded picture, which can send mixed messages. That is a tradition for that game. Drawing in that snow is one of the very few ways you can communicate. But it does mean that they enjoyed their Journey with you.

There are four other games made by TGC: Journey, Flower, Flow, and Cloud (which as far as I know originates in the thesis of the TGC founder or so). Of those, Journey is apparently similar to Sky to some extent, you travel through a desert to a mountain and also can meet other players on the way.

You could get through all of Journey in a couple of hours, but if you didn’t go back and look for all of the power-ups, all the tableaux, you would miss a lot. One thing you’d miss is learning that you can interact with the dolphins (little pieces of carpet that form larger creatures), you can get a lot more help from them, they are friendly and fun to play with.

Journey especially; whenever I played with a new red cape, I always made sure to try and guide them to the Flower in the pink desert and the flOw creature at the base of the tower after it had been filled n_n

Haha, it's very easy to get lost in that area specifically since it's so wide-open with few landmarks. It took me quite a lot of runs through the game before I could consistently navigate my way around

Well, that may have been you, then. When I was on my fourth or fifth Journey playthrough I got adopted by a red cape who was very free and easy, and willing to adapt to whether I did or did not want to find every glyph, every history lesson, etc.. But the one thing they absolutely insisted on was guiding me to the flower in the desert. Whenever I tried to proceed with the level they hooted at me. It was obviously very important to them.

This last playthrough, when I got it on my PS4, I remember running across a ruin with a mural in it that I've never seen. And I thought, for sure, I had scoured that desert, lol. It's such a huge place!

I'm the one that usually adopts other people, lol. I get sad when they disconnect, though... Last one, I sat at the beginning of the "water" like area and waited for like... ten minutes, hoping they'd be back somehow. Hated leaving that spot that day.

I think that's a Chen specialty. In most games, if something exists, you need it. So sooner or later you discover it. This reduces replay value. In a Chen game, unless you happen to be following the right hand wall instead of the left hand wall, there can be something complicated and delightful you just never discover.

Yes, exactly! I learned about so many lovely details hiding in the game thanks to the encouragement of other players. And even after I had discovered all the "intended" content, I still found more amazing things to see from the dedicated & clever OOB explorers I encountered.

I just had a really great journey with another player in a red robe. We seemed to understand each other so well. We both like moving at about the same speed and finished the whole game. AHHHH! I forgot to take a picture of the very end where we drew hearts in the snow. I hope I meet them again. I waiting until credits were done so I could see what their “name-sign” was. Their game name should stay the same. But their sign will be different. Anyway, what a great time we had! Journey is such a different and fun game to play. Thank you TGC! 😊 ♥️

Support for it has stopped! the original release was 2012, so TGC hasn't worked on it in a while, and the iOS and PC ports were afaik done by another company or two, but support for those has officially stopped a year or two ago

Journey has been released for many years, on many platforms There are no significant bugs left in it. It's fine.

...unless it's iOS lolol. Depends on what you consider "significant", but I experience random freezes fairly often for such short game (which makes finishing a journey with a companion very hard because I have to restart the app whenever that happens), and music can get quite buggy too. It doesn't seem to be uncommon either since I've seen a few people mention at least the first issue as well. It's a pity that'll never get fixed, and because of that I'd advise people to get Journey on another platform if they have a chance (if not, iOS is very much playable, but it is far from a perfect port sadly)

Any wayfarers met that quickly vanish on you might be trying to connect with a specific friend - or you may have simply been unlucky. There are specific triggers for connecting/disconnecting with players, after all.

The PlayStation versions of both Journey and Flower are excellent. If you have a friend with a PS3 or later they're willing to lend you, it's worth playing on those rather than a tiny phone/iPad interface.

I played Journey on PS3 and PS5. I've never had PS+. I definitely found other players on my PS3. I'm pretty sure I found other players on my PS5. I think that that text is wrong. What you do need is a PlayStation account, but if you have a PlayStation you already have that.

I can also confirm that PS Journey does not (and never has) required PS+ to play online and meet other players. It's an error on the listing page.

I'm surprised it doesn't, to be honest. Usually, companies have to make a huge deal with Sony in order for their games to be PS+ exempt, and it usually requires a hefty buy-in or a significant portion of add-on revenue...

I've always called it the Mountain. If I remember right, there was a dev guide or something about the game where the devs also called it the Mountain, I believe. It was regarding the title screen, where it's hidden behind the first dune until your rebirth, where it is revealed in all its glory.

Was a dev commentary about the development of the game, iirc.

Loved some of the stuff they talked about.

For example, did you know there used to be a glitch in the ||snow area||, where it would just white screen when ||the wayfarer freezes||? Beta testers thought the glitch was the end of the game, because it happened every time. They didn't know about the final level until it was fixed.

I find it so fascinating (weird mind, I know), because I couldn't imagine how I'd feel if that was the end.

If it's an Intel Mac you can use BootCamp to install Windows on it. You do need a (paid) copy of Windows, and plenty of free disk space. Windows won't run on M1 or M2 Macs yet. Technically it runs, but Microsoft has chosen not to license it. 😦
