with the season now live I figured I would hop back in here and give more thorough tips for photosensitive players to survive this season and the future of sky.

this post is pretty big so its split into two parts: this first part for info on the event, and the second part for what you and your friends can do to make it as safe as possible for you.

Please try to remain empathetic and supportive toward players expressing concerns about this season even if you cannot personally relate to their experiences. Additionally, not everyone experiences photosensitivity the same way, so even though one person’s situation may be very different from another’s, all experiences are valid.

currently the shard schedule seems to be every 2 hours starting somewhere in the range of 1-2 hours after reset and lasting about 50-60 minutes from the time of eruption. (see links below for detailed schedule from vale and for a developer's remark on the schedule). the shard events are procedurally generated which means they do not have a set pattern and will not be predictable before the day of the event see note beyond knowing the approximate time they will occur. for normal candle runs if you are not trying to do a shard event specifically I suggest aiming to do your run during the times the eruptions are not occurring. The first approximately ten minutes of the eruption causes every realm in sky to have a red haze that affects visibility. #questions-and-help message

note: once the first shards fall for the day, every shard event for that day will be in the same locations.

red shards will give ascended candles and will be much worse overall for photosensitive players. they are flashier (red shards pulse), brighter, higher contrast, and come with pretty aggressive screen shaking. the black shards will give regular candles and are much easier to do BUT they will still flashbang you at the very end when you complete burning the plants like the red ones, so be aware of how close to finished you are to avoid the screen flash that indicates you have finished. red shards do have a visual indicator on the largest shard of how close to finished you are, it's similar to the emote in vault when you are praying at the stone except the light goes down instead of up.

if you touch one of the red shards you will lose a large amount of light (possibly even wing lights if you are low on light). the animation for losing wing lights sometimes flashes your screen once before showing the icon telling other players to help you. be careful not to touch these.

props now will degrade if theyre hit by crabs or are too close to the shards. the cooldown on prop replacement is much longer if they degrade from these conditions. you can still use props to deflect crabs or recharge but try to pick them up before they degrade so their cooldown doesnt get extended on you. I can share a video on how to effectively use props for protection in dm just ask.

red shards have corrupted crabs. these are distinguishable by the red shards protruding from the crabs. they are much more aggressive than normal crabs and cannot be flipped at all. the corrupted crabs can be lured away from the shard area. in some areas they can even be lured over an edge where they cant come back. have someone with a candle and full light be a decoy to lure the crabs away from the area before the rest of the group comes in to burn plants.

the floating plants will make you float as well while you are burning them so they will provide a temporary safe spot from the crabs.

the safest way to finish a shard event is to go with a group that fills an entire server (8 total players in your group) where everyone in the group is aware of your needs and knows not to contribute actions (such as deep calling) that can make the event worse for you. strangers dont know you and probably think they're helping when theyre actually hurting.

this will be different for everyone but I've found for both events that the least harmful camera angle was having the camera as zoomed out as much as possible and pointed straight down at the ground. others have said that enabling the blue light filter (called eye comfort shield on some phones) and having the brightness set much lower helps them as well.

ios has an accessibility option thats a bit hidden but super helpful. in settings > accessibility > display and text size > reduce white point. you can adjust various display settings here as well to see what works with your needs best. android will differ by device but the graphics options are under settings > display. some androids have settings > accessibility > visibility enhancements to adjust individual display parameters as well. switch has extremely limited options but you can go to system settings > system > change display colors to select "invert colors" or "greyscale". and you can adjust the screen brightness. edit to add playstation: playstation is also super limited in graphics settings. under settings > accessibility, you can zoom, invert colors, larger or bold text, or high contrast. settings > sound and screen > video output settings has a few more options.

deep calling is not efficient for recharging friends and it is very dangerous for photosensitive players. all friend actions like high five and hugs will instantly recharge ALL of your light without flashing. use these to help your photosensitive friends.

during events, try using piggyback instead of handhold if you can. you are much less likely to get separated from your friend when a crab hits if you're using piggyback, and it gives you more opportunity to look away from the screen. This can also help your friend as it recharges them much faster than handhold.

memory candles especially in the shard areas tend to have videos of skykids spamming deep call. try not to open any memory candles while burning plants.

if you're solo and don't have anyone to help ensure your safety, start with the plants furthest out and try to stay away from other players. use props to your advantage to block crabs and recharge you but be sure to pick the prop back up before it degrades as mentioned in my post above this one. and if youre solo and dont want to be, please ping me to ask to contact. I am photosensitive too and i am doing everything I can to try and help others like me survive this season.

tbh I have no issue with this, like sometimes granny shows up at the 35 minute mark and sometimes she shows up closer to the 28 minute mark. At least in servers I've been in. Sometimes she finishes around the 45 minute mark, sometimes I notice her leave around 42 or 47.

it's possible to have two shards on one day. but at least in beta both shards were the same type if that happened. and there wont always be two
