the platform you spawn on at login has a button to bring up your constellation. this will show your friends and the spirits you've found.
you can also spend candles on spells at the boat you see at home, on your friends to gift them hearts or unlock interactions, events are held about once a month that brings new items based around holidays or seasons, and every 2 weeks on Thursday a spirit visits home that you can buy items no longer obtainable otherwise.
(to see/participate in events and travelling spirits you will need to have visited the temple Elders in Valley of Triumph)

Without saying it too much—the gist of mine is that the island was mostly an area above water (assuming from the water levels in the mural) used as a power diamond (main power source of Sky) factory similar to the Forest Temple and the buildings in main GW area but in a larger scale

The Abyss area is very similar to both Pink Desert and Underwater Tower in Journey. So, my guess is the original spirits were trying to harness some sort of energy from the crystals we're helping them find, while also using mantas as labour/transport.
