I've only found it useful in the maze at the end of valley, and the area under the temple in prairie. There are a few other places you can light up to see better, but there really aren't many completely dark places in the game.

They had it lighting candles in beta but I guess it caused issues. If you are solo you have to go through the awkward process of putting the lantern away before you can light candles, burn plants, do any other emote or basically do anything useful. It's kinda sad TBH.

and flashlight doesn't work at all while flying since the lantern points to the ground... all in all I'm really hoping they find some way to improve it in a future update, as it stands it's kinda not worth it IMO.

Yeah I'd definitely suggest grabbing the free spells and trying it out if you're considering it. The spell works exactly the same.

It's fun though, I mean all the accessories are really just for fun- but it's hard to want to leave an instrument or even the fireworks staff behind for the limited use the lantern provides.
