I don't know why this happens, Discord seems to have a compression when we post gifs
Very nice work, @inner pollen! I like the highlights areas and midtones area they really give the vintage style, great choice of image as well!
Loved the monochromatic palette, @vague swift! It goes very well with the textures and the light edits you did. The details are looking very spot-on as well, especially on the vignette (to highlight the textures), and the man and the horse (for the darker areas). Very well done!
Wow! What an amazing photo this turned out, @hushed spade! You did excellent work! I loved the rusty details for the frame, the textures, and the color grading, they all came together great!
Nice approach to the challenge @wise helm! I like the dramatic look that the lighting brought, perhaps decreasing the intensity of the vignette a little bit would enhance the vintage effect. Great job with the textures!

Day 8 Vintage Photo
Super cool effect on the cartoon, @harsh girder! I like the gradient that you applied for the background and how it makes the subject stand out. Great job with the details 👍
uoh, is verry good

Thanks!

I used a free PS brush upload after applying the sepia tones. I think it's still to crisp but it's against my "grain" to add noise...:(. Yeah if I have time I'll put more noise in.
Original
@hushed spade that redo is fabulous. really looks old good work!!!!!
challenge #7
This was a fun challenge. I had a hard time getting the bright white to tone down/recolor to sepia tones.
Original Image
Cool work, @copper moss! Great job creating a composite with cyborgs and for the other details. Perhaps brightening the dark areas of the cyborgs would make them fit even more in the scene. You can use the output sliders of one levels adjustment layer, it will lower the contrast and make it match the dark values that are presented in the background image. You did a very good job with the shadows, especially for the cyborg on the left, you can also make the shadows of the other three a little sharper under the feet since they are closer to the ground naturally, the shadow would be more well defined. Just some ideas, that's a very promising image. Nicely done!
Challenge #8
Thanks!

Day 8 - Vintage Photo
I post earlier this time... I don't want to monopolize attention during the live streams...🤪
@eternal mica @bleak fossil
The pasta must have gotten cold!!
How do you get that torn paper effect. I love it. I was trying to do it but couldn't get it.
Here is my vintage Challenge #8.
The Original.

DCC08
I will adjust brightening of the cyborgs and sharpen the shadows of the others to the right. Valuable advises you are giving. Grateful to you, Valdair.
here's day 5
It fantastic! Can I ask you how did you the border of image what looks like a photography?
Luckily being a football fan of this era, I've always been joyful to see the competition between C. Ronaldo and L. Messi. Their stories of challenging to be better really inspired me and the whole world.
And maybe one day in the future when I will get old and go to the museum of football to see this frame, I know I had a great time enjoy the sport.
Hey everybody! Happy Friday!
Great work, @coarse isle! I loved the way you mocked up! It's a real challenge masking this image when the subjects in the front have a motion blur. You did an excellent job with that. The mask looks great and consistent. The vintage effect also worked out nicely, I like the subtle vignette that you added, it establishes a strong focal point to Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. The textures and the color edits are looking very nice as well!
@pastel vessel beautiful work! I like how the color palette gives a nice atmosphere to the image, kind of reminds me of Halloween. Also, I loved the effect you did on the letters, I think that this was an interesting approach. You also kept everything consistent by applying the same effect of the text to the clouds as well. Nicely done!
Playing catch up
Torn paper effect is simply a stock image from adobe stock free ... You should search with keywords "old paper" or "vintage paper"... Lot of interesting free texture...
Adobe Stock free section is awesome! Here the link to the one I used: https://stock.adobe.com/ca/images/used-paper-texture-old-cardboard-stains-isolated/286262941?prev_url=detail
Hi, I forgot the original picture for challenge 4
@coral stone I have made progress with the perspective on the cobble road, thanks to PixImperfect video on how to use Vanishing Point filter. Please let me know what you think. Next step is to figure out how to randomize the stone pattern. 🙂
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Great textures in this one, @high mesa! I loved the bevel and emboss work too, it gave a nice sense of depth to each stone and went very well with the contrast against the background image. Well done!
Wow, what an amazing improvement, @sullen oasis! Not sure if it's going to work in this case because this technique randomizes the pattern but ends up overlaying each element so I'm not sure if it would be effective in your image, but in case you want to try, you can use Shift+F5 and choose Pattern as a fill, here's the link to the technique https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFxeIJZGUSg Again awesome work putting into perspective 💯

Very cool work @onyx field! I like the frame that you added for the subject, and I can see some bevel & emboss too in the edges. Loved the way you blurred subtly the image, it really gives that vintage look, if you want, and that's totally a personal preference, you might lower the opacity just a touch (or you can play with Blend If) to allow some textures of the paper appear throughout the subject and blend a little more. Keep it up!
Nice textures, @bronze bluff! I like the colors you chose for the stones, it looks like in some of them there are some edges, you can easily hide them with a layer mask, and keep the organic shape of each stone, of course, that's only a small nitpick haha. Well done!
You did an excellent job with the patterns, @gaunt veldt! I loved the way you kept the shading and the textures of the original shirt. The text worked out very nicely especially for the highlights where they gave a special shine. The subtle glow goes very well with the direction of the copies giving a nice movement to the scene. Well done!
Wow this turned out amazing, @jade eagle! I think you did an excellent job with the vintage effects, the colors, the textures, and the frame came out together great! 💯
@hollow yarrow this is spectacular, Franck! Loved the way you blended the image, just for curiosity, did you use blend if to blend the highlights of the image or a specific blend mode? It looks great (as always haha)
Loved your image choice, @sullen oasis! It goes very well with the vintage style, the textures, the colors and the lighting are very consistent and well-managed. Nicely done!
That is electric, @onyx field 🌩️ hahah
Great work, @vivid tulip! Super cool style bringing some green tones to the scene and keeping the vintage style. The textures and the frame also adds a lot to the design. Well done!
Hi @opaque tide ! My final top layer is a free iStock image - AdobeStock_308335798 Old paper. I have it blended "Multiply" at 77% opacity and I extended it beyond the lower layers. Then I went down to the lower layers and erased the lower right hand corner to not show through.
Beautiful work with the vintage effect, @frail ice! I loved the mockup in a paper and the way you blended the image, it looks like a photo from the 1800s. Awesome work with the textures 💯
Nice idea, I like it ! 👌
You have Hawkeyes Valdair! I used different blending modes for stained textures and as I didn't like the result of "regular" blending modes to blend the main image with the paper I played with "blend if" too. ☺️

Hi for everyone! Looking forward to today's lesson 😍
It's amazing, @vivid tulip! You had a great attention for the details adding the reflection and building an atmosphere with the glow and also spreading to the other areas like there was really a portal there. I have no words other than awesome! 🙂
Thank you. New technique to learn 😊
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @coral stone
Is there a way to get the same effect in just one layer? I mean making the background white while maintaining the vignette. My goal is to get a shadow between the photo and the white background. I'm sure I've approached it the hard way. I see no way forward. Thanks!
Thank You!

Smile! Show your teeth! These are my images. I need to practice more on creating the edge of the portal. I hope the message makes sense. The smiling pumpking is reminding the pumpkins on their way to earth to Smile! Show your teeth! Thank you all for this opportunity!
The glow is painted and smudged. Needs more electricity?
Hi, @hushed spade If I got you question right, you can place the white background below and invert the mask, and then build all the assets in layers according to the order they should appear.
Its the weekend, how about some real authentic Chinese food...if only we could just do this!

(Click the image, then click "Open Original" for best quality! Discord compresses GIFs a lot)
Thanks, Sam! I think you do a great job with these challenges.
Yes, think of the order of the layers as the visibility of your project, what is the layer that needs to be the background and go until the foreground. This thought will help you for the next projects as well 🙂
@bleak fossil Congratulations on completing a wonderful fun educational series of challenges. You were awesome. (Now could you move to the left of the screen, 🤣 🤣 🤣 )
Yeeees @bleak fossil this set was amazing! So many great techniques learned. Nailed it 💙

This is the best I could do with challenge#2. But, I am working really close to zero threshold. Is that okay, Sam?
Thank you @bleak fossil for two weeks of fun filled challenges. This is the first time I’m doing DCC. I learned a lot, not only PS techniques, but also how to approach a project e.g. you analyzed old photographs to understand how contrasts & highlights differ. Thanks to @coral stone & @eternal mica for reviews & constructive feedback. 🙏🏽

Beautiful textures, @hearty quiver, I loved the way you managed the lighting and the colors, it really has that nice vintage style. The stone pattern also turned out great, especially the textures and the contrast. Very well done!
I loved your image choice, @safe ledge! The textures look very spot on and the frame reinforces that vintage style. I like that in the second version the darker areas have more details. Great job!
Lovely work, @candid cape! The textures of the image are looking super cool, especially in that, they are more intense in each corner creating kind of a vignette for the subject. Perhaps lowering the contrast a touch would make it look even more vintage, just an idea. Great job!
Challenge 7 portal effect
I've fallen behind, here is my fire pic. It is called: "Students are expected to return to in-person classes."
For today's challenge.
I actually made this a while ago and saved it originally as a Gif.
But I only found the downsized mp4 instead
I know what you mean. That one got away i was doing that challenge late at night but ill keep that in mind for other things I do.
No problem, Diaz 😀
Wow! This is amazing, @tropic knoll! Great to see you as well! I loved the way you masked the pumpkin, the whole composition has a nice sense of depth, and I actually have just one point of feedback and one suggestion. 😄 One is that you might establish which one makes part of the background and which one is foreground by overlapping the main pumpkin and the portal, putting the big pumpkin just a bit in front of the portal. This will make the eyes of the viewers identify the main hierarchy of your image. My suggestion would be just like you said, adding more glows to the portal just to enhance that magical effect that the portals have. Keep it up, my friend!
When I saw today's challenge I thought no way can I make that. But, thanks for providing step by step instructions. I call this the Queen of Diamonds.
Super cool work, @high mesa! I loved how your composition tells a story! The portal and the colors are looking very on point and I like how you positioned the portal in the same direction as the subject is! It looks like whenever he wants to go to China, he goes haha. Nicely done!
Oh wow! This is amazing, @frail ice! We actually had a challenge in some previous DCCs where the objective was something like your image, I believe it was one of Paul's. Loved the step by step, the framing, and the way you positioned the cat's face in the same direction as the original image. Great job!
Great GIF, @last mica! The time of each frame fits very well in the rhythm of the animation, allowing us to see step by step without being too fast or too slow. Well done!
My submission for GIF DCC. 🙂
What a great way to close this set, @sullen oasis haha! In Portuguese it's Batata 🥔 haha. Great work in your gif, I really like the time you gave to each frame, the texts read very nicely and allows my eyes to go from text to graphic without changing so fast. Nicely done!!!
Nice work on your composition, @hearty quiver! I like the cool/warm contrast that you did with the portal and the background image. You made me hungry as well haha.
No problem, @grave moss, take as much time as you need. Great job managing the contrast with the assets, it imitates very nicely the atmospheric perspective. Did you made a sky replacement for this one? Well done 🙂
This is lovely, @slow totem! Really great way to share your process, perhaps you might add a little bit more time for each frame, this way the text and the image could be seen and read more easily. I loved that you showed your sketch, great job!
Great works everybody!
I agree on the time for the frames 🙂 .. mostly proud I managed to paint that on my kid's bedroom wall 😄
And you definitely should be! It's amazing!
Is this one better?
Very nice, @candid cape! You can also brighten the subject area a touch to create a focal point. Great job! 🙂
@coral stone thanks for your comments! I changed the sky's appearance by putting a color overlay of a transparent, smoky gray, there is actually an even lighter one over the rest of the background image. That's actually Mt. Rainier and the University of Washington.

Very nice portal effect, @distant bone! I like the 3D look of it that the subtle effect on the edge gave. If you want, you might spread the glow that is in the ground a little more, you can play with its intensity as it moves away from the portal too. Well done! 🙂
Hey, @undone cargo, is there any specific part that you need feedback or the image in general?

Hello @coral stone! Thank you, thank you! I always appreciate your feedback. I'll work on making the pumpkin the main subject this weekend. And try to get the portal to look more like an opening into another dimension. Great weekend to you!

Your characters are absolutely mind blowing. How about doing a DCC series where you take the whole 9 sessions to teach us how to develop characters? Each day we learn how to add more to a character, until day 9 when we have one completed project???
@pastel vessel Cool concept for the portal exercise, thought Im not sure how many people want a portal on their bathroom!!!. I like the double layered frame on the portal. I might want to see some a more expansive frame around your portal. I would also suggest a bit more of the yellow frame glow onto the street scene to better sell the effect.
@hearty quiver In addition to @coral stone comment, I would push the outer glow effect onto the water, the arm, etc, to sell the effect, take away the look thats its just pasted onto the composite.
@grave moss You have two more weeks to complete your set of challenges. We'll still be here reviewing works until 10/17. On your fire design, I would add some smoke/sparks/depth etc to make the fire look less digital and more 3 dimensional. It has a pasted on look to it right now. And you might want to mask out the white edge to the trees.
@sullen oasis What an awesome GIF. I love the concept, the execution. Folks who didnt participate in the livestream chat wont appreciate how awesome the concept is, but thats their loss. (I happen to be a Skippy crunchy person myself!!!). The flow from frame to frame is spot on. Really well done.

@wise helm Very well done GIF. The development from stage to stage is clear. The transitions are well timed. Good job.
@forest aspen Awesome GIF. Adding the explanatory captions is a super addition. However, with that text, the reader needs time to read the captions. It seems youre at 1 second. You might want to try 1.5 or even 2 seconds.
@young karma I love the Process GIF. You show the development of your image very clearly, and in a way that really enhances the appreciation of the final design. I might want to give each frame a bit more time on the screen before transitioning to next slide. Try 1 second and see how you like it.
@dusky swallow Lovely job on the vintage photo. It would be awesome to see the original photo, if you care to post it. I watched your GIF and thought I was watching a replay of Sam's post!! It looks exactly the same!!! Great job. Very smooth transitions from frame to frame, and the development is clearly spelled out.

@halcyon current Welcome to the DCC Discord group. We're happy to have you join us. If you have any questions, or need help finding your way around, just ask, we're here to help. You can go back to the Behance landing page and complete all 9 challenges over the next 2 weeks. @coral stone already commented on your text design. Your perspective design is very well done. The lighting you added definitely tells the story of a crate in a warehouse. I think the perspective of the text can be tweaked a bit, as shown by the lines on the attached. And you can mask out the board thats running down the side of the crate to give the text a flat surface. Very strong effort.
@vague swift Nice work on your second Portal. I think the effect would be enhanced if you changed the color of the BG inside the portal ellipse. Thank you for posting your Behance portfolio. Well done. I would suggest for consistency, you rearrange the images so that either you have the original images first or the final images first, whichever you like.

I have already signed up and will be here everyday.
Lots of different ways. Create a solid color layer of the color you want; mask it out with black; use a soft edged brush with low opacity/flow; paint in the glow with white as desired.
Thank you very much @eternal mica! I had that board masked out but missed it when I decided to change stuff a bit. It's masked out now. Then to get the text right I divided the spaces between the lines in 10 parts and draw lines between and then it was easy to position the text according to the perspective. See the two step-images I upload before my final result 🙂

Challenge #9
@bleak fossil Cartoon yourself challenge - I used an image of my beautiful daughter for this challenge instead of using one of myself 😁 I went on using a green base both because that was the main colour that appeared when applying the filters on the colour layers and also because of that green is her favourite colour .
how did you make those lines so perfectly?
Hi @willow idol! I first created 11 small red dots on separate layers (you can off course create as many layers as you want to) , placed one on the top line and one on the middle line (counting the three lines mentioned in the video file and also shown in @eternal micas reply on my original post). Then I selected all the dot-layers and used the move-tool to space the layers equally (not sure what the correct words are as my native language is Swedish) . I then did the same thing for the other side. Then I used the line tool from one dot on the left side to the same dot (in order) on the right side. Then I did the same for the space below the middle line. After that I realised that I could have done the entire left side in one step and the right side in one step instead of doing the both sides in four steps. I really hope you understand what I'm trying to explain. If not I'm happy to try again 🙂
@willow idol @halcyon current All you need do is with any line drawing tool: click to locate first point; go to second point shift/click. Ps draws a perfectly straight line
I am asking how he got them perfectly spaced out. I like my things perfectly spaced as well😓 it's my ocd.
Then I understood you correct @willow idol I used the spacing tool in the move tools toolbar to space them out perfectly.
In fact, they should not be spaced perfectly, because the perspective lines move to different angles as the perspective changes.
Ok. Because I thought I was going crazy when I saw the lines not coming out perfect
What you are calling "perfect", you actually mean "parallel". Perspective lines are necessarily not "parallel". If they were, there would be no perspective.
@bleak fossil Challenge #3 - Playing with fire with some twisted addition 🔥

Thank you Leo 🌈
Excellent job @tulip epoch! Loved the way you managed the contrast to achieve the vintage effect, especially the faded blacks. Great job!
Excellent textures, @limber thistle! I loved the way the vignette established a strong focal point and removed some distractions around the corners. The fog presented in the original image was a great way to imitate that damaged look that the old photos have. Great work with the stone pattern too!

Day 8 Portal Effect. I went with a different type of portal. I was trying to do this challenge last night, and I had one of those nights where I was (seemingly) doing every single step exactly as Sam was doing them, but it just wasn't working on mine... So, today I did this one really quick just to try and get the effect. 😱
I want to thank @bleak fossil for a terrific series. Your smooth detailed demeanor made some very difficult concepts and techniques easy to understand and replicate. My example of the welcome page. I chose not to do all three on the same image. But I love the effect so much I used it on a book cover design.
Clothing patterns challenge - Here is my take on this one. I splitted the selection of the dress in 12 parts and applied some inner shadows to create distance between the different parts. I used inner shadow as then I wasn't depending on the order of the pattern layers. I also gave the different pieces different opacity to strengthen the illusion of distance.

You when up and beyond 🤯 I love it😍
@limber thistle Very nice work on challenges 6&8. The tiles have very nice textures and bevel work. The shapes are interesting. The BG texture will also add interest to widespread pattern application. The Vintage photo looks good. The one tweak I would suggest is to add a blur to the image to eliminate the sharp clarity the original photo has.
@young karma Cool selection for your process gif. The steps you followed are clearly shown and lead to a clean final product. Nice flow to the gif.
@gilded bolt Really well done Portal design. I like the idea of showing the portal at an angle, especially to get a better perspective on your monster exiting the portal. It also allowed you to focus all the overflow glow to one side of the image, a very neat idea. Great art work around the ellipse shape to create the portal effect. Solid effort all around. 💯
Portal RE-DO. Smile! Show Your Teeth! The pumpkins images and art are mine. We went pumpkin hunting in fields last weekend. Loads of fun. Creating a portal was fun, too! Thank you for this opportunity! I look forward to your feedback! Earth is compliments of https://i.gadgets360cdn.com.
@queen geode Very cool idea, I love this take on the Perspective Challenge. Did you build the boxes out with different assets? They definitely work well. I like the details and overlapping shapes and framing you created with the trees. Excellent job!
@halcyon current Very nice! Really cool to see you incorporate this for both the pattern and GIF challenge. What blending mode did you use on these patterns? I wonder if applying a levels adjustment to the dress (under the patterns) to push the contrast could help the form and lighting of the dress show through a touch more. Great job!
@high mesa The vintage photo design is looking great! The faded colors and contrast really help that effect, and the texture is looking really good as well.
I learned a lot on this challenge - Change Pattern. Had to work it a few times over. Excellent Challenge! Thanks!
@wary swan Nice job with the Cartoon Yourself challenge! The colors and lines (especially in the pants and shirt) came out well. I like how you played around with different ways of masking too 👍
@tropic knoll Really cool to see you using your own photos for this one! I like the variation between the big and smaller pumpkins, and the way they get smaller off into the distance, nicely done. The portal looks great too, I really like the softness of it and how it blends into the background. Nice job!
@frail ice Very nicely done! The pattern offsetting gives it a realistic look and the masking is looking great. I love that pattern and those colors too, it works really well as a clothing pattern.
Thank you @bleak fossil! I used the multiply blend mode but I changed it to darken and also added a levels adjustment layer under the patterns and I think it came out better. All the pattern layers are on 95% opacity and I decided to keep it like that even after adding the levels layer.

Hi @bleak fossil. Thank you for your kind feedback! It's nice when a photoshoot comes together and you actually get what you hoped for. Ever since I learned from you how to do multiply and color dodge, making shadows and highlights seems easier for me. I admit I haven't got the knack of placement yet, but I do enjoy the practice, practice and more practice. Thanks for your ongoing support and encouragement!

@frail ice In addition to Sam's comments, I love the reflection. One tweak I'd suggest, I think you could sell the realism of the baby with some shadows. What do you think?
@queen geode So much to love about your perspective design. So many great details handled so excellently. I couldnt help but thinking how using the same design and creating a portal out of the crate you have that the dinosaur broke out of would play out. Awesome job.
@bleak fossil I did use different assets. I started with the original image that you provided then used different textures to build out the containers like you asked. Then I replaced the background and shading. For the footprints I tried applying the perspective rules that you suggested and used plastic wrap to make them look like they were filled with water. I had a great deal of fun with this challenge. So much so that I got behind on the rest of your challenges so I am still creating them. Thank you so much for this one. I am already applying your tips in other things that I am doing.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@eternal mica that is a brilliant idea! I wish I had thought of that myself.
You just did!!!!
@bronze bluff Solid efforts on your two posts. Your portal design looks great. There's even a sort of transition from the amber tone of the street scene to the color of the stream. I might make a few tweaks to the art work around the portal, making it a bit more ephemeral and less solid, but thats personal preference. And I would extend the portal overflow glow to be more prominent on the landscape. Your vintage photo looks real good. The extra mile you went with the textures to add aging work nicely. I might add a bit of blur to the original photo to eliminate some of the crispness of the subjects in the image.
@young karma LOL interesting Portal concept. Very nice work creating the portal. I would suggest, if the portal is the focal point of your design, it should be larger and more prominent in the design. Is this just me? There's something weird about your composite of whoever that man is (😂 ) who is emerging from the portal. His legs seem reversed. Also, you might sell the portal story a bit more if the man was partially still in the portal scene. Last, I think you can add portal outer glow to the areas in the street scene. Solid effort by you.
@hearty siren Nice work with the Fire Man design. The flames you added work well. The glow effect you added looks good. I might work more on masking out the glow effect on the left of the image and focus it more on the right side of the image, to pick up more of the shadows of the original image.
@wary swan Sam pointed out to me in my design, how helpful it is when doing a perspective design to draw in the vanishing point lines to help with the sizing of the objects. I gave you a head start on the attached image. i would suggest you add more lines and then resize your text accordingly.
@wary swan Very well done vintage photo. The textures you added to age the photo look great. The fading and vignette both look very real. I might blur the original photo a bit to take away some of the crispness and make it less "DSL-ish". Very strong effort.
@queen geode Very well done cartoon effect. The BG adds a very light airy feel to the whole design. Did you intentionally not want to use Sam's idea of having the image show both pre and post effects in one design? It might add even more interest to your design.
@eternal mica ya that was for my grand daughter and she didn't like it lol. She put it up on her profile for her messenger kids.

@hollow yarrow You add so much to the group by your posts and your comments. Your impact on the group is immeasurable. Thank you so much for posting your Behance portfolio. The overall portfolio presentation is interesting and well designed, with great fonts, and awesome individualized design presentation for each exercise. Trying to do "Cartoon Me" and my filter gallery is grayed out. Restarting my computer didn't help. Any ideas?
I guess you have to rasterize your image
That doesn't help either.
yup. Also needed to be 8-bit. Now it works.
yep
Great color palette, @buoyant nova! I like that you repeated the blue tones from the clothes in the background of the cartoon, and still kept the contrast. The details and the colors are looking very spot on, the only suggestion I'd have would be to recover, with a levels adjustment layer, the dark area of the neck just to keep the cartoon effect consistent through all the areas. Great job!
That feels so Halloween, @wary swan! Loved the colors and the fire effect! The only suggestion that I'd have is to add the fire glow to her clothes might sell even more the effect in the image. Well done!
Thanks Valdair for your comments. Yes, it is a bit dark, will do the adjustment. Thanks

My take at the 6th challenge - Tilable Textures. This was a fun but also little tricky tutorial as drawing shapes and creating a pattern isn't as easy as it seems. Thank you @bleak fossil for teaching me new stuff 🤩

Thanks @eternal mica . Somehow, all of my assets in my libraries representing a year's worth of work, and all projects in Photoshop and Illustrator disappeared overnight from my CC, and Adobe is being pretty useless at recoverin g the lost work. I am going to need a while to grieve. This really sucks.

I agree a shadow would add realism. I tried out various shadows and outer glow effects. I Definitely need some lessons on how to best accomplish this!
@halcyon current No problem, glad you had fun with it! The organic shapes of the rock pattern look great and the texture came out really well too. Nice job!
@unkempt inlet Very cool! I love how the effect turned out on the donut and hand, the strong lines really help push that cartoon effect. It could be nice to see a bit more line on the cheek/jaw area on the left side more if you were drawing in any extra lines. I like the contrast of the blue background and red on the right side. Nicely done!
@buoyant nova Really cool graphic novel looking effect on this one! I especially like how the effect turned out on the hair. Great picture for this style too, nice work!
Thanks Sam
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@wary swan Really neat take on this challenge! I like the dramatic look of the flames in front of the face. It could be nice to maybe see a little bit more orange glow on the face for a more realistic look. Maybe using a hue/saturation layer? You can see I used that technique around the end of the Portal Effect stream. It's a nice method to add some colored "glow" without making an area much brighter. Great job!
@queen geode Very creepy indeed! The flames look great and blend into the head really well. The warm color you added helps the realism and contrasts nicely against the dark background. Well done!

📘 INDEX - Create Long Shadows in Photoshop
00:00 - Introduction
00:06 - Document...
This was a recording from a Discord live stream I did in the Photoshop Discord on June 30th 2020 on the subject of shadows. I discuss how I use drop shadows, cast shadows, and generally how I use multiply layers to achieve shadow effects in photo compositing as well as painting. If you are unfamiliar with the Photoshop Discord or Daily Creative ...
@eternal micaI look forward to watching those too.

Okay, thank you. Will look at that too Valdair
No - they said they are irretrievable because they don't actually save our files to the cloud, for "privacy reasons." I am restoring what I had backed up locally, but anything I had on the cloud is gone. I don't even know why I am paying for cloud storage. The customer service was terrible. I just can't bring myself to start things over right now. We're going to see if our home server's backup has anything, but I won't be able to do that until my husband is off work - I need his help.
@grave moss Take a deep breath. You'll work it out. This whole "cloud" thing makes me very nervous. I dont understand it. I save all my files on my hard drive, and I have that double backed up, on site and remote. I bought a huge 2TB hard drive last year because of all the digital images I was storing.
You are not the only one who likes it old school Ted. I have everything backed up on my hard drives. Cloud is fine for working on but not for saving forever 😉

@tired turret I love the colors and I also like the idea with the polygon shapes. Nice job 😃
Day 2 re-done. @coral stone does this look better?
@hearty siren Your clothing pattern is very well done. The pattern you created is very interesting and could definitely be one to be seen on real clothing. The creases of the dress show through nicely, and that wasnt easy with this asset. (I know, I tried!!.) The color you picked orks well with the desert BG. Nice work all around.
@hushed spade Good work on the cartoonify image. I like the shape you created for the two sections of your design. The cartoon effect looks really good, especially with the pen lines you drew in to emphasize the facial hair.
@halcyon current Well done shadow cover design. You nailed the techniques Sam demonstrated. I like the textures you added to the colored text. Good work
Thanks. Actually i didn’t draw in lines for the hair. But i did spot heal all the extra black dots that were on the face.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
@tired turret Nice work on your tileable textures. The shapes are interesting and the bevel and shadow work is well done, especially on the soft application on the middle design. I think the shadows can be enhanced more on the blue design. On your vintage photo the effects you added really work. I would blur the original image a bit to sell the idea that the picture is old , taken with a very non sophisticated camera.
Wow, I cant believe all those black lines were created solely by the filter. Good for you.
@wary swan beautiful pattern for the clothing pattern design. An your work on the BG image really enhances the presentation. You di a fine job creating the different dress layers. That was a tough asset to work with. I think you might be able to play with the B&W contrast in the original dress to create more of the effect on the top layers. But it might not work well. Good work.
@queen geode Beautiful design for the Clothing PPattern exercise. The asset you selected is perfect for this exercise. The clothing shows through really nicely the layer overlays you applied. Well done.
Thanks for the feedback Ted, I did adjust the dress in Camera Raw filter to get a better contrast, little darker color

@quiet fern Really nice work on the Fancy Text and Tileable Textures designs. I like the gradient you used for the BG on the text. It added a lot to the design without overwhelming the text, which you also handled well. The textures and color overlays you added to the tiles have a realistic look to them. Your bevels and shadows are consistent. Nice work.

Your portal effect turned out great Nathalie! Love the blue reflection on the ground even if it's a bit intense in my point of view (maybe reduce opacity or play with blending modes... but it's a question of taste😉 . Darken the edges of your image could enhance visual impact of your portal (car and street lights are a bit distracting)...
But I really nitpick. you did a great job! 👍

@quiet fern I love the colors and the smooth shapes in this one. Great job!
Challenge 7 - Portal effect - I'm not sure I'm too happy with this one. I noticed that the colour looks a lot better when opening up the original. Not sure why. I'll try to make another one with different photos. These photos are both mine and they are showing the magnificent church in (and parts of) my hometown.
I noticed the faded colors on this one and made a test where I clicked up the image and then opened up the original from the link below the image and moved that tab to the right and this is the difference in colors. Why is that happening?
Thanks! I really enjoyed doing this one.

I started over from scratch with the same images. I also added some smoke in the end as it looks like fire... This one could almost count as a result for Challenge 3 - Playing with fire 😁 I hope that the colours behave... They behaved good - The only thing I did different this time is that I converted each image from ProFoto RGB to sRGB right after opening them from Lightroom. The last time I changed converted it when saving the image. Not sure what the real difference is though???

@gentle pasture Nice work on the Cartoonify design. You achieved some nice color gradations on the cartoon image. One little nit pick Id make is it would have ben interesting to show both effects on the baby's face, though its tough with the sun glasses taking up so much of the face.
@wary swan cool application of the Fancy Text exercise with the Tileable Textures exercise to get a combined design!!! Your placement of the color stages is well done. The BG picks up the colors nicely. The Bevel and Emboss and the textures on the top layer work well. Nice effort.
@quiet ridge You had waaayyy too much fun with this series of challenges!!! It looks like youre going to be making up variations for a long time to come. Keep it up. Its fun to watch your designs evolve.

@quiet fern Raelly cool job on your portal exercise. I like the multiple colored rings around the portal shape, and the B&W treatment for the street scene. Id suggest your design could probably handle spreading out the outer glow more to impact more of the B&W image. What do you think?
Very nice work on the vintage photo exercise. The colors, gradations, vignettes, torn paper all work well. I would suggest adding a Gaussian blur to the basic image to eliminate the sharpness and give the photo more of the "old camera" look. Good work all around.
@compact pecan Very well done on the Process GIF. Your timing is spot on, the process is shown clearly. Good job by you.
@compact pecan Did you post this portal design once before? I didnt see it. Good job with the concept, the execution, and the color palette. I like art work around the ellipse and the spill over glow you added to the street scene. I would suggest scaling up the size of the portal and the buck to be more prominent in the image, making both of them more clearly the focal point of your design, and selling more the glow you have at the top of the bridge.
@chilly hawk Very well done Clothing Pattern design. The asset you chose to work with is perfect. It has very strong whites and shadows. The design you created fits the asset image perfectly. The shirt textures show through very realistically. Really solid job by you!!!
@halcyon current Awesome Portal Effect. If at first .... You starting over was a smart decision. Sometimes the File>New is my best option, especially with the experience of what I learned in my earlier attempts. I love the art work you created around the ellipse shape. Very powerful and well done. If you dont mind posting it, Im curious to see your street scene asset image with no effects added to see how you impacted it from the portal flame glow. Super job.
@hearty siren Cool work on the Vintage Photo exercise. The color layers you added are very well done, The texture layer you added is really cool, it adds a good sense of age to the photo. My one nit pick would be to blur the basic photo a bit to make the photo look more "old camera" and less DSLR-ish.
@halcyon current Your Vintage Photo is beautiful.. I love the asset photo. The way you aged it is impressive. The vignette and border really sell the effect. The texture you added works well. One tiny nit pick, as I've suggested to a number of others, it would help sell the old photo idea if you used a Gaussian blur on the asset photo to eliminate some of the sharpness in it, and give it more of an "old camera" feel. Really well done!!!

@eternal mica Thank you for the feedback on this one. I have in fact added some gaussian blur (1,5) so I obviously need to add more. Here is a small piece of the original photo where the first have no gaussian blur at all and then 1,5 (like the one I uploaded) - 3 - 4,5 and 6. How much blur do you think that I should have added for this image?

Hello everyone, here is my portal effect challenge.
Impressed work
Good effort. I like the concept. When I made up my Perspective Match, @bleak fossil suggested I could improve my sizing of the text by drawing in more Vanishing Point Lines to guide me. I added a few to your design (the black lines) and showed the VPL created by you (the red lines). You can try to do the same thing to the side panel.
@candid cape Very well done fancy text. I like the color palette you created. The BG gradient draws the eye to the focal point of the design. the stroke and texture on the top layer are nice touches. Two tweaks I'd suggest: make the space between the underlying layers consistent for each color, and align the top layer to be more in line with the lower layers.
@tired turret Very powerful portal design. The art work you added around the shape is really well done. the portal image looks a bit dark. Perhaps increase the brightness so more of the detail shows?? I would suggest a lot more overflow glow to the street scene from such a bright light source, and maybe in the multiple colors from the artwork.
@wary swan Now I know why you told me to wait for your Tileable Textures design. This wood effect is terrific!!!. And your application to the Fancy Text is awesome. Well done, my friend.
@halcyon current Your Clothing Pattern design is awesome. What a great idea!!! The adjustment layers you added brought out the folds in the underlying asset beautifully. Well done.
@worn venture Are you sure your hubby signed up to be the model for this??? Maybe he thought you meant "model" as in "GQ cover"??? Nice work with the flames for your Fire Man design. I like how you spread out the effect on the body. I would suggest you add some overflow glow to the areas around where you have flames. And, personal preference, Id make the image brighter to create contrast between the BG and the model. Well done.
@paper oriole Good work on the Cartoon Yourself design. The contrast between the two sections is well done. I might widen out the space between the line shapes so more of the effect could be viewed, but that may just be my personal preference.
@crude dirge I really like the Cartoon Yourself you created. The contrasting shape is interesting. The color palette you chose for the cartoon side is very distinct from the asset colors. The way you placed the dividing line, works well. The one tweak I might suggest would be to include some of the face on each side of the design to enhance the effect as it effects the skin. Good effort.
Ah I like that thank you! Yes I need to utilize the tools at hand more
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
@buoyant nova Hey Susan, where ya been??? Nice job with the Playing with Fire design. The flames look great. I like what you did to the eyes. I might suggest a bit more of a gradation on the fire glow effect to diminish it as it works its way down the face. Its a bit too consistent all the way through. (I think you got it right on the hand.)
@south prism Im not sure if this design is for one of the DCC challenges. If it is, please tell me which exercise you intended it for. If its not, you can submit your designs on the design-other tab on the left to get them critiqued. Thank you.

@wary swan Id guess thats the top of the new tower in Hudson Yards looking out to New Jersey. I like the way you brought down the intensity of the street image to increase the focal point on your portal. I would suggest brightening up the portal image even more. Nice work with the art work around the portal. My preference would be to increase the overflow glow from the art work around the portal onto the street scene.
@deft cedar Well done Portal Effect design. The two images have good contrast between them. I would suggest increasing the overflow glow from the green artwork onto the BG image.
@glacial minnow Welcome back. Great to see you here again. Your cover design is well done. You captured each of the effects Sam demonstrated in the Welcome stream. I like the way you masked out the Perspective Match to create the look of being in a warehouse. I painted in some Vanishing Point lines for you on your design (in black) as compared to the lines created by your text (in red) to show the technique Sam suggested I use on my design to enhance the effect. I believe it really helps to fine tune the distort on the text to the right proportions. Your Cartoon Yourself design has a beautiful light airy feel to it. The color palette you selected for the cartoon side helps bring out the effect, as it has good contrast to the blue overlay of the asset side. Playing with Fire is very well done. The asset is an excellent selection. Your work on the flames makes the fire look like bubbles in a bubble bath!!! My one suggestion would be to increase the overflow glow from the flames to the area around it. Thats a lot fire to have so little glow.
I added in some level changes and some color overlay. Looks better to me now. I also darkened it a bit in that back center. I thought it gives it some depth, as the farther back in the alley the less light there should be. Thoughts?
@eternal mica thanks. And yes he was very happy to be the model. We were going for a character like "Anger". I agree with adding some highlights. As for the brightness, it was brighter on my pc than on discord. Guess my monitor is not calibrated correctly.

As it was the most challenging it seems for me this time... I figured why not make this my gif challenge. I will forever enjoy making these from now on....
this was a different method for me. Haven't had as much practice with photo manipulation, so its fun to do these challenges. Feedback appreciated!
What I started with and what I ended with. Applying a few things from previous challenges.
@tired turret Your Process GIF really enhances the presentation of your Portal exercise. Interestingly, to me at least, is how much the tweak you added to the Portal design of the outer glow now enhances the Process GIF. Good job by you.
@paper oriole Nice work with the flames. They have a realistic shape and color. I think the spill over glow can be a lot stronger around the entire body of flames. E.G. You might want to try some on the clothing near the flames. The glow on the face can be toned down by masking the glow as you move away from the flames. It would be interesting to see your asset images for the Playing with Fire design. That would allow a critique of the entire image rather than just the fire.
Your Clothing Patterns is well done. The creases on the shirt show through very clearly. The skin tones are off, but that may be something you tried intentionally. Good work all around.
Do we start our own challenge?
Thanks! These have been some of the best challenges yet and you're feedback has been extremely helpful in fine tuning my processes. I really enjoy the back and forth.

Hi Ted, thanks for your comments. We have had family over to stay and then some friends, so not able to do the challenges as much as I would like. Not sure if they come to see us or to get some sunshine lol. Off on a Greek Island cruise next week. Hopefully will catch up at some point

Thanks for your feedback Ted, that was not right if I say this photo is shot in 2006, and the building was highest in NYC at that time. I think you can guess what building it is now.

@agile cedar Yes, you do any or all of the challenges at your own speed. This series runs through Sunday. If you'd like to learn all about it, watch the Welcome stream (a link is pinned in the pin files on the ribbon bar above). If you have any questions, just ask. We're here to help.
PC DCC 2021-10 Challenge #8 Vintage Photo 9-30-2021
Finally, the last 2 challenges, here challenge 3
and challenge 9 (following challenge 3 recently finished)
Thanks! I'm using a Wacom tablet that is a couple years old, been playing around with the brush settings trying to find something I like. Thats why in the clothing pattern design I put the weird skin tones, tryiing to play around with the masking and brush. But I've been really enjoying these challenges and what everyone comes up with. Very motivating!

Tileable Texture challenge
This aesthetic challenge ✨🤣(dont have a name for it)
@agile cedar huh????? Aesthetic challenge???
@paper oriole You did a great job with your Tileable Textures design. The pillow effect on the stones looks amazingly 3D. Your BG texture is also spot on. My only suggestion would be about your shadows. There doesnt seem to a be a consistency to the depth or the direction of the shadows.
Photo Manipulation
@agile cedar Each challenge can be identified by its title, or alternatively, by its place in the sequence of 9 challenges. If your design is submitted as part of the current DCC series, please identify which one it relates to so we can comment on it. Thank you.

Okay then
Thank you @eternal mica @hollow yarrow for the feedback and the review, it helps me a lot and improve my work. And thank you to @bleak fossil for this month's challenge, I learned a lot. @eternal mica please see my work ( photo manipulation) can you suggest me ...what I made mistake ..or how to improve my work ?
@hearty siren I'll take a look at it in a little while. Was that from this DCC or a prior one? In the future, if you are posting for exercises from a past series, please post the work in the "past-challenge" tab. Thank you.

Challenge 8 vintage photo, bottom original
Nice project!💯
@gaunt veldt Really well done Vintage Photo exercise. The choice of asset is excellent; such an interesting photo. The B&W tint you created is very realistic. Spot on work with the vignette to make the edges look worn. The textures you added to create water spots and scratch marks look so real. If I had to make one tiny nit pick Id suggest blurring the asset photo a bit to make that image look less digitally sharp, more like it was taken with an old less sophisticated camera. Awesome work by you 💯
Would a gaussian blur do the trick or the blur tool and hand paint it in?
@gaunt veldt Gaussian will probably do the trick, I would guess at 3 or 4. I would suggest adding the filter directly to the asset so the image is blurred but your adjustment layers are not. But thats just me. You do pretty well without me sticking my nose in!!!!

@wary swan Really well done Process GIF. The design you selected as your base is so well suited to the Process GIF. And you exhibited the stages wonderfully. Each stage is a clear step forward towards the final design. The timing is spot on. Good job by you.
Thank you for posting your Behance portfolio. You created a crisp well rounded well designed cohesive presentation. Each one of the images attracts the viewer's interest and is explained clearly by your text. Good work. Thank you for participating in the DCC and the chat. Fancy Text
Thanks for the feedback Ted, it warmed an old man's heart 🥰
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
@green hound Welcome. Have you participated in a DCC before? Are you familiar with process?
@queen geode Awesome effort with your Fancy Text design. The layers have a lucite look to them, almost a transparency. The depth of the layers is consistent and spaced evenly. The lens flare is a neat touch. My one tweak would be to lower the vignette effect to allow all of the text to be visible. Right now, each end is just a shade too dark. Good job.
@eternal mica thank you for the feedback! I am doing that now.

Tileable Textures
OMG! your Giph (😉 ) is awesome! I like the idea of different perspective and texture fills for each letter. Animation is nice too... Well done!👍
Great job on this one! Love the old stone wall look. Texture really looks realistic. By the way I saw your deleted message about bot ... Don't worry it happens sometimes ( I had this type of issue two times in the past and I never understood why... Colors? Shapes? Who knows? This is the limits of Artificial Intelligence 😉 )
@queen dew In addition to @hollow yarrow 's comment, I would suggest you slow the down the animation just a bit, probably .5 seconds, to allow the viewer to absorb whats in each screenshot. Give it a try. See which you like better. Great job by you.
@hollow yarrow Thank you for your comments. Ya the bot thing had me puzzled. I was trying to figure out what I did wrong to elicit the response, but it finally worked in the end. I had a great deal of fun with this texture. More than I had anticipated. Thank you @bleak fossil for the challenge!

is there another way to remove the bevel edges on tiled patterns besides the clone stamp?
Yes , the Varberg is the name of the town, and there is a fortress behind me, build about 1287- 1300 it was also a Castell. read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varberg_Fortress
are you swedish?
Yes all my ancestors is Swedish back to 1700 century on my father side .

Day #4 touch up
So this is both the 2nd and the last challenges. I needed to do a picture for a story and used the second challenge to change it. I also used a new way of sharpening the picture using blur so I figured I would make a GIF of it just for funzies!
This is what I created with all of those steps.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your advice! I'm checking them out today!

Portal
I wasn't too happy with my result of the #2 - Cartoon Yourself challenge so I decided to make two more but I also "changed" the name of this challenge to "Cartoon something else" 😁 @bleak fossil Thank you for the challenges
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
Thankyou! I always want to learn how to create gif for show the entire process of my work!! its easy and nicel!
@queen geode I really like the result of this one maybe you could have added more blur to make it more authentic. I also like the original very much. Good job!
@paper oriole Very well done Process GIF. The major steps are clearly displayed. The timing of the slides is right on. I like your portal design. The art work around the portal is solid.
Theres a nice cohesion between the portal image and the BG image. I might suggest expanding the portal to make it a more prominent part of your design, but you might like your BG design enough not to agree.
@worn venture Well done Vintage Photo exercise. I would suggest you add a couple of texture layers to age the photo a bit more, and also to blur the original image just a bit to make it look like the picture was taken with an older, less sophisticated camera.
@willow idol Nice work on the clothing pattern design. The creases of the underlying shirt show through nicely. The pattern you created is fun. I might suggest scaling up the pattern a bit. Good job by you.
Thanks 😊
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
@eternal mica can you scale it up still or do you need to start all over?
@tired turret Really well done Process GIF. The way you added the text for each slide enhanced the presentation. The work you selected lent itself nicely to the design. The timing is well done. Good job.
@halcyon current thank you for you help. I wondered if that was enough of a blur.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @halcyon current
If you followed the steps Sam showed, you should have multiple pattern fill layers. If you double click the pattern icon in your layer panel, the Pattern Fill drop down window should appear. You can control the pattern scale there. As in all cases, as you experiment, save your work. Oh, and make sure you save your work!!! Did I remind you to save your work!! 🤪 🤪 🤪
🤣
Much better. I would lighten up the darker shadow a little bit. Did you watch the JR video? Go for broke and create a light shadow behind the baby. You'll have hit a Home Run!!
@crude dirge Super job on the process gif. It looks like a real cartoon. Since youre attempting to show the various stages, I wonder if you can sacrifice some of the cartoon effect and slow down the animation so the viewer can see the individual steps for a bit longer. Im not sure it would be better, but I would have tested it out to see the difference. Maybe you already did. Awesome job by you.
@queen geode WOW, I thought your first Portal Effect design was great. This one is awesome. I love the way you have the spill over glow effecting the round tile in the center of the floor. The BG image is fantastic. One tiny tiny nit pick is I would open the portal a bit more so the portal image is a bit easier to see. (If you wouldnt mind, please post the assets.) 💯
@halcyon current Practice is such an important element to the DCC process. Going back and repeating the process with the experience of the first walk through, has always been a valuable step for me. Your Cartoonify designs show real progress and understanding. Good work.
@queen geode Good job on the Vintage Photo design. I might push the texture layers a bit more to create more of an aged look. And, as @halcyon current suggested, I would add a Gaussian blur to the original asset to make it look more like an older less sophisticated camera took the photo.
@everyoneIs everyone ready for a new series starting tomorrow??? This will be an abbreviated series of only five challenges, since MAX 2021 will be Oct 26-28. If you havent registered for MAX 2021, I strongly suggest you do it today. ITS FREE. ITS AWESOME. Hundreds of sessions in all areas of Adobe. https://max.adobe.com/
@inner pollenB Thank you for your cc's on both images. I sorry I don't know what you mean by posting the asset images? Am I supposed to show all of them or just say what they are? There are a lot of them and cumbersome to list. I am trying to show a gif for this one so that I can put it up today will that do? Skeletons, sconces, and cages came from pixelsquid, the center disc I created with a stone texture and the elipse tool, the floor was the texture layer that I created earlier. Background image, monster and archer all came from deposit photos and the dungeon came from deposit photos also.

Fancy Text Gif. This took a few days for me to get but I kept going. Happily, I am. finished Before his birthday which is in a couple of days! The background is a fabric I bought. I Liquified it in Filters, smudged and Blended it. This whole process was quite fun! Thank you for the inspiration!
@eternal mica Thank you so much for your feedback. Practice is always a good thing. It's sometimes harder than you think to find the "right" image for some challenges but it's nice too as you'll learn to "see" images in a way you might not always think on.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
@queen geode I wondered the same thing when I did my version of this challenge. I belive it's better to add a touch of more blur than you think you should from the beginning.
I in no way meant to give you a burdensome "homework" assignment. Looking at your image, I was so impressed by all the work that went into creating the composite. It adds to all of our appreciation of your effort and creativity to see the elements you used to create the final product. It would be awesome if you could make a quick art board of the elements, (or the major elements). If its too much work, please dont do it.
@eternal mica Oh my lol. I'm sorry. I did not mean to come across as it would be too much to do. Thank you for the advise. I wasn't sure how to post it. That is a great idea! Thank you again for all the support!

The description for today challenge is copied and pasted from the vintage challenge
I am having problems with today's challenge, where do I ask questions about it?
Mine looks more like a worm than a smooth line...
WIP:
@scarlet hamlet the jitter you're seeing there is because you may not have smoothing turned up high enough and your mouse is not sliding smoothly. I would try turning up the smoothing and make sure you are in a continuous, fluid movement when you drag the mouse.
I turned it up to 100% and it didn't make a difference
I tried moving the mouse slow and fast and it still did the same thing
You can adjust the smoothing effect located in the top ribbon bar.
Are you using a soft round brush or a hard round brush?
Check your brush settings. Try resetting them to default and starting from scratch.
I used a hard round brush with hardness to 100% and smoothing in the top bar to 100%
@scarlet hamlet what is your flow set to? Next to the Smoothness on the top bar?
mixer brush challenge #01
I think I'm happy with this one:
Cover Page for the new Challegne
Day 1 - Mixer Brush
I think if you decrease "Spacing" in the Brush Settings it should solve your problem.
Yes Capt Fuzzball helped me out, thanks! Spacing was set to 25!
CORRECT FRANCK! The spacing will make it nice and smooth like this
If the spacing is turned down you will get this effect:
This was so much fun! 🙂
Challenge 01: Mixer brush. It was very interesting session from Voodoo on how to use mixer brush on gradients. I used here 2 big brushes and a mixer brush on the Sun´s shape (ready legacy shape of Ps) path and clipped gradient to it. I used lighting effect on the Sun. And also used lens flare to decorate the bigger planet in the blend mode just to give some impression. And also outer glows on the planets. The given background is to me here marvelous. And thanks on giving advice to regulate spacing when doing mixing brush from Voodoo.
Is that you Davis? From Youtube?
Yep, thats me. Hello
Okay so, If you want to make a big stroke but using the mixer brush lags for you when the brush is larger you can do what I did here
So I turned down my brush size to be very small and drew the shape like this
then I converted that layer to a smart object
and I free transformed it to be larger like this
so I used a small brush to do the shape so it didnt lag, then transformed it to be bigger so I can still have the larger shape I wanted!
Does that work for you?
Does it help?
Yes, it does work. Thank you so much

Gave +1 Creative Carma to @jolly quest
It can also be that you need a little bit of practice. Are you using a mouse? Sometimes what helps me if I have to use a mouse is I clear a space around my mouse, try to use a mouse pad underneath and move your whole arm when you draw the shape. Move your arm from the shoulder instead of trying to draw from the wrist
this offers more control and a much smoother line
Right now, I'm using a mouse on a high dpi.
I would say practice a few times and get used to it.
I will also post mine that I made today so everyone can have them if you would like to use mine instead!
For sure, this tool is great. Maybe, some practice could help out
Isn't it so fun? Discovering the Mixer Brush was an awesome thing for me haha

@jolly quest I definitely have to check the rules for DCC Leaders. I think there's something in the rulebook that says leaders are not allowed to have this much fun, especially day 1 !!!!
🤣 🤣 🤣
Mixer brush challenge #1 a fun technique. Lots of possibilities!
Hey there! I tried writing the latter "Z". I hope you like it. Love to know what you think about this.
Ps DCC2021-Mini Mixer Brush
I had a couple issues to overcome. I had to reset my preferences to get the target to show up instead of the eye-dropper when I pressed ALT to sample the gradient. Then I had to adjust my spacing so it was smooth in the brush settings. Thank you for this challenge, I learned more that I thought I would!
My second try
@quiet ridge Nice! For some reason your design gives me Clay Fighter (SNES game from the 90s) vibes. It must be the checkerboard ground plane with the dimension of the text and shapes. Really cool, I like the gradients you have in this!
@stoic junco Whoa, cool to see you get illustrative with this design! The eyes have a really interesting look to them. Nice job with the text too, I like the curl in the y and some of the wavy shapes fit that Halloween vibe nicely. Well done!
@eternal mica Really cool job creates a whole textured/patterned background with this effect! The glow and stroke around the text helps it read really clearly. Nice work!
@frosty monolith I really like the job you did with the masking on this design! It creates some really nice depth. The small vs large shape works nicely to create a clear design too. Very nice work!
@paper oriole Ooh, great sense of depth with this design in the gradient of the text. Also really cool effect with the background. The colors and brightness really help this whole thing read clearly. Looks good!
Mixer Brush DCC. Wishing everyone a magical day! This lesson was loads of fun. My notes to remember this are probably longer than the stream itself. It's not halloweeny but I'll work on something. Thank you for this opportunity!
@young karma Oooh, digging seeing these techniques combined into a single design! The color palette works nicely together and really nice work on the masking around the text. Really nice sense of form on the line!
@tropic knoll Really nice take on this challenge! I like the illustrative quality to it. The colors and sense of form look great. Also great to hear you're taking notes, I always feel like that helps me retain information a lot better when I do it. Looking good!
@halcyon current Nice job with keeping the lighting direction effect consistent throughout each shape. Really nice job with the masking too, it pushes that sense of depth even further. 👍
@worn venture Very cool! I like how you created a pattern with these lines. The gradients are looking good!
@copper moss Very nice design with the first challenge! The sun's shape looks really cool with the mixer brush and the overlapping shapes add some nice depth. Nice work!
thanks! i like how the two together made it look like it was the same gradiant.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@bleak fossil is there an easier way to fix the bevel on the tiled patterns than with the stamp?
@worn venture There's often multiple ways to do things, but it's often situational. You could paint over it manually with a brush, but clone stamp seems to be the best solution in that situation. Are you having issues with it?
@young karma Looking good! I really like the intense sense of lighting on this, and the contrast between the warm and cool. The overlapping of the line adds some really nice depth as well.
@hollow yarrow Love it! Really digging the retro vibe, this effect works nicely with the 80s aesthetic. The masking and shadows really add some great depth to this. Nice work!
@fresh swallow Interesting effect in this challenge! The smudge effect along with the form and depth of the mixer brush looks really neat. The overlapping layers of the design are looking good too.
@bleak fossil Thanks 😄
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @bleak fossil
@dusky wave Nice job with the mixer brush shapes. The subtle sense of dimension in the gradients has a cool look to it. 👍
@queen geode Love seeing the breakdown of this portal image! The cloudy effect of the portal came out really nicely and the strong color contrast between the two environments makes for a really strong read. Nice job!
Day 1 Mixer Brush
@marsh wadi Really nice photo composites! The composition of both images is working really well too. It's also nice to see the breakdown of all the images you used. Just a heads up that any design not related to the challenges would be best posted in the #📝project-feedback section. Nice work on these!
@compact pecan Very cool, there's an interesting sort of sheen effect with center spiral's colors. I like the strong sense of lighting on the side lines, and the masking with the hands helps push the sense of dimension even more. Looking good!
Thanks, @bleak fossil! I always appreciate your feedback.

@halcyon current Very nice job with the "Cartoon something else" challenges, hah. Really neat to see the effects applied in these ways. The effect on the crystal ball is really interesting, and I especially like how the lines turned out on the flower. Looks good!
@stone wigeon The portal effect is an interesting idea for this challenge! Nice job with the gradients. It could be cool to clip a new layer to the mixer brush shapes and use a large soft round brush to add a bit of a glowing effect to the edges closest to the portals. Kind of like they're being enveloped in light. Nice job!
Love it

Too fun! Created so many fun gradients, then had to play with all the settings. This is like finger painting, only clean!
V2. This is a lot of fun. I figured Id try a B&W
Has anybody tried a double helix with these?
Day1 - Mixer Brush
(An other quick one)
Hi @bleak fossil! Thank you for both of your comments! I never realized how much Photoshop can do. Sometimes I get on overwhelm but then I slow down, listen to what is being said and do it. I really appreciate your insights and encouragement! Thank you!

Mixer Brush Challenge
Challenge #1 Mixer brush for the font. I think i might try a web next... 😊
@hushed spade Whoa, I love how far you took this challenge with all the different designs! Especially the intricacy of the second two designs. The sense of dimension gives the whole design a bit of a 3D, or 2.5D feel which is really neat. Great shapes and designs with these too!
@tired turret I like the sense of perspective you got with the text! The 3D feel of it fits nicely with the color and form of the almost slime looking background texture. Nice job!
@chilly hawk Very cool! I love the colors and form on the pumpkin. I also really like how both the pumpkin and text are lit consistently from the bottom. Nicely done!
Thanks Sam. This week is gonna be spooky fun!

@hollow yarrow Another great one! Really liking the strong lighting and contrast against the dark background, and the deep shadows. The background texture adds a great effect too.
@eternal mica Very nice, almost a sort of liquid chrome effect to this one. The masking is working nicely too. I like the bold contrast of this against the black background.
@hearty quiver Ooh, super cool! Kind of a neon sign effect from this design. The clear separated shapes and colors work well together and give everything a nice clear read. Nice job depicting a beer mug in such simplified single-line shapes too!
@crude dirge This is great! Loving seeing this kind of process for illustrations for your Day 9 challenge. Personally I like when each frame is a touch longer to really be able to give the viewer a good feel for every stage in the process. Neat to see how your lines went from sketch to clean. Nice work!
playtime !
Thanks for your critique. Drawing a single straight line with mixed brush was more challenging for me than I imagined.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm really enjoying these challenges! 🙂
Love this concept of portals! Great job!
☺️
@tropic haven Really cool looking Mixed Brush. I like the color palette. The smiley face is a neat touch.
@onyx field really fun interpretation of the exercise. Definitely has a party feel to it. Good work creating all the shapes. They all look smooth and flow nicely.
@tired turret Great job with the cover design. Using the two tone mixed brush for the text gives off exactly the vibe you seem to be driving for. What is the font you used? The BG design is very well done. Good job all around.
@wary swan You got really cool effects on your two designs. The R/W/B design has a 4th of July fireworks feel to it. Good work.
Thanks for the feedback Ted, it is fun tool to working with.

@wary swan It seems to have hit a sweet spot. Lots of submissions and lots of creative ideas.
Agree Ted
Aww thanks! The font is Mythos Std. I love the creatures and when you use stroke it defines them really well.

@quiet galleon You really nailed this one! Excellent colors, shapes, lighting. The whole design generates real interest. Great job by you.
I have tried every brush setting on my list and not one has a brush stroke that looks anything like the one in the daily challenge. Can anyone help me please?
PsDCC with VooDoo Val - Day 1 - Mixer Brush
I played with the brush today as well.
It was great fun 🙂

Hi there. This is my day 2 challenge. Hope y'all like it. Would love to know your thoughts.
Mix well with a wet brush, blend, add a dash of background, and voila...FUN. Watcha think?
Challenge 02: Gradient effects. I did liquify black and white then used pattern of it with gradient overlay on the shapes. Used blending modes and bewel and emboss on the shapes.
Gradiant Liquified. Challenge #2
I like the play with how some is almost out of focus
Glad you like it.
Hi! I feel like this is a way too basic texture, but thanks to Val, I did learn a lot of new stuff about Photoshop!
Liquify is really fun but mastering this will take time. I was playing around with it & I kinda like this one. would love to know what you think.
2 in 1 - Mixer brush challenge in the front & Gradient effects challenge in the background. Thank you @jolly quest for some new techniques 😃

@tropic haven Hah, I love the face you added on this one, and the hair effect you got on top of it. Good job with the different shapes and gradients here!
@onyx field Very cool, great to see how much you played around with this technique. I especially like how well the green triangle and line going through it, as well as the pink shape with the line through it on the right side stand out against the background. Nice job with the masking!
@tired turret Really digging the illustrative elements of the PS-DCC text that you added! The mixer brush effect adds some really nice form to that. Cool background texture and color contrast too!
@wary swan Nice job with the gradients! The textures this created are really interesting too. You could always turn down the spacing in the brush settings for a smoother effect with the hard round brush, of course I imagine this texture/effect could be intentional. Looks good!
@quiet galleon Super cool, I love the clear form and contrast in all these shapes. The break up of color and size of these lines really helps them read clearly even with there being so many in the design. Very nice work!
@pliant comet Looking good! I really like how you added a 3D look to the gradient to fit the 3D look of the mixer brush and ground plane. Nice job with the masking, and the ground glow is a nice touch. 👍
@young karma I like it! It reminds me of some of the Adobe Live intro graphics with the gradient circle shapes. Seems like it could work nicely as a background. Neat to see a variety of shapes in this design, like the ones with the sharper points. Nice work!
@lucid plover Very cool! Digging the bold color choices and all the wild shapes. Kind of gives me a 90s Nickelodeon vibe. Keeping the color palette simple also helps give this a consistent look. Nice job!
Thank you @bleak fossil

@dusky wave These look neat, almost a sort of camo pattern type of feel to these shapes. I especially like the last one with the blue and orange color contrast. The grain gives it a cool look too. 👍
@wary swan I really like the metallic look and texture you got with the liquify tool in this one. The colors break it up in an interesting way. It could also be interesting to see a version with the opacity on the color layer toned down so the liquify effect is more dominant and see how they compare. Nice work!
@stoic junco Very cool, I really like the deep contrast between the brightest and darkest shades of blue. Also very true to your username, hah. Great effect!

@frosty monolith Great effect. I can "see" a couple of other images in this one and that is always fun!
@quiet galleon Wow this is really cool!
Thank you so much 🙂 It was a fun challenge for sure!

I like the green & the red one the most. YEAHHHH!
@tired turret Wow this is soo cool!
Glad you like it buddy.
I like your "Abstract" one the most I think, it could work as an album cover.
@eternal mica Pretty cool melted effect on this one.
@stone wigeon Wow this is soo cool! Great job!
That's a great idea. Actually Metallica has an album cover very similar to this. So when I was designing it I thought of this to be a good fit for an album cover too. 🥂
@paper oriole I love this one. It inspires me to another go at this challenge. Thank you!

@slate raptor Im not sure I know what you mean. Is the brush the issue or is it the brush effects?
@frosty monolith Thank you! I'm happy that you like it 🙂
@pliant comet Very cool design for the Mixer Brush design. The colors are electric. The masking is well done. I like the pattern on the floor and the reflective glow you added. Very nice work.
@young karma Good job with the Mixed Brush design. Combining the brush strokes with gradient shapes created a cool dynamic. Repeating the colors was a good idea.
@lucid plover Loud. Bright. Exciting. I might suggest a curves adjustment layer to lower the sharpness on the right half so the colors dont wash out as much.
Here's to Metallica then 🙂
Thank you 🙂

Hi All 👋 , PS DCC fist timer here. My take on Challenge #1 Mixer Brush.
@analog cave Nice result and welcome!
@jolly quest Thank you for Challenge #2, learned quite a bit. That was fun.

I just like the way this image looks. Although the statue is not made of stone or marble it has a cool effect.
@dusky wave Great to see the different approaches youve taken to the challenge. Adding the texture to the design is a nice touch. The top and bottom designs seem to be the same one with different color schemes. Nice effort.
@wary swan Sticking with the R/W/B theme. I think the effects of the your liquify have been hidden too much with this blend mode. Perhaps a different one would be more effective?
Day 1 Mixer Brush
@stoic junco With a tag like yours, we should expect to see a blue design!!! You created a very interesting pattern. The change in the blue tones from bottom to center are very dramatic. Well done.
@quiet galleon Oh, I like your second design. Adding the pattern to areas of the design is very neat effect. Your design is very interesting. Even though it is more monochromatic than the first design, I think theres still enough liveliness to the colors to work. Well done.
@wicked aurora Nice work on the liquify design. It has the look of an abstract rose bud. The two different blend modes show up nicely. I like the noise filter you added to the second version. It addsa lot of interest to the darker color.
Great take! Love your Mixerbrush with brigth colors. Reflections on the ground add a nice touch!
@frosty monolith Nice effort with the liquify design. The colors work well together. I might suggest enhancing the noise to add a bit more texture to the design. Why not try it with a few different blend modes and see what you come up with.
@vague shuttle Thats the definition of a bad hair day!!!! Really well done mixed brush strokes. Adding it to a model is cool idea. I like the iridescence you added to the model to mirror the neon glow of the brush strokes. Nice work
Thanks so much for the feedback. I'll try that out.
Gave +1 Creative Carma to @eternal mica
@copper moss Cool effort with the liquify. Its a bit difficult to see the design, because of the shape overlay, but they look like you captured the concept. (Im not sure which direction VDV is going with this, but Im thinking she may want us to use these texture designs as a BG for a later project. Your addition of the shapes might conflict with that. Just my guess. I may be wrong.)
@paper oriole Awesome color selection for your liquify. And very interesting pattern created by the liquify. I would add the noise filter and see how it changes the look. Also, how about testing out different blend modes? Just for the fun of it.
Super fun to learn how to do this. My smoothing is cranked up to 100 and doing some experimenting with masks, which looks very cool/awesome.
@short cedar Thats the point, to learn, and experiment. The design came out fine. The noise filter you added shows up nicely. Did you try it out with different blend modes?? Good job by you.
@young karma Two very different interpretations. Good for you. I would suggest a curves adjustment layer for the blue design to play with the contrast and brightness. My preference, the design can have a lot more "pop". The noise filter shows through nicely. The second design is really lively. The pattern has a lot of "swirl" without being too messy. Good work.
@frosty monolith The liquify is an amazing tool that creates wild designs. But it definitely takes time to create the effects. This one definitely has the "fire" effect. Very well done.
@halcyon current Super design. So cool to combine the challenges. The mixed brush strokes a terrific. The masking really works. The colors go great together. The lighting from the bottom is consistent and adds a lot to the design. Your BG liquify design is well done. I love the B/W idea. Even though youre combining the designs, I would lower the intensity of the BG to make the brush strokes the focal point of the design. Perhaps blur it a bit. What do you think?
@analog cave Welcome, we're happy youve decided to join us. If you need help finding your way around, or have any questions at all, please reach out. We're here to help. Nice effort with your Mixed Brush design. Cool that you decided to use it to create text. Your colors are definitely South Beach!!! Im not sure you intended to have the "snake" effect on your stroke, but in making your brush stroke you can minimize the spacing to make the stroke perfectly smooth. Your decision.
Hi again!
Mixer Brush with Spin Blur is here)
@empty ice I like your design a lot. The marblization (is that a word??) of the design is very strong. The colors create a very modern art feel. Did you try playing with some blend modes to see how it would effect the look? Adding a noise filter? Just suggestions, not required. Good work!!
Thanks for your feedback Sam.

@thorn geyser Wow, beautiful Mixed Brush design. The colors are electric!! The reflections you added are super. And the grid pattern to add perspective is great. Awesome effort.
Thanks for the feedback Ted, I will looking into it TM.
@acoustic heron Interesting Mixed Brush design. Your Mixed Brush strokes look cool. I especially like the orange one. You added the grid perspective. Perhaps have some of your design also be in perspective? One suggestion, if youre going to work with the masks, I would give them a logic as to where they appear and disappear. Just a thought. Keep on having fun!!!
@neat sparrow Really creative interpretation of the mixed brush design. Both the front and back brush strokes look great. Your masking of the front strokes is well done. One tiny tweak, I might play with a curves adjustment on the front strokes to add some contrast between the three different strokes.
