Sci-Fi Movie Poster Design Challenge

Whipped this up in an hour waiting for the kid to finish her dance class. If I had more time, I'd take the time to make his arms hang down, but a quick puppet warp got it close enough for tonight. It's FAR from perfect, and could use some more color correction, but hey - always learning!

I did this illustration on Ps using Kyle´s brushes and did this animation on Fresco since mobile Adobe Express seems having some issues with migrating .psd file. Sci-Fi Movie Poster Design Challenge 04/29/24
The advent of generative tech enables more rapid ideation and prototyping of layouts. Pair this with Photoshop's powerful tools for manipulation, such as the Remove Tool, Masking, Advanced Blending, Adjustment Layers and you have a design powerhouse that fosters boundless creativity. This synergy between generative technologies and pixel manipulation features empowers artists and designers to thoroughly explore possibilities, to pivot quickly and ultimately bring their creative visions to life with unparalleled speed and efficiency.

As it's a work in progress I would suggest you to use a darker background image for the Neon effect challenge. Really hard (almost impossible) to get a great result on bright background. You might try to darken your brickwall with a Level adjustment layer with a white output around 60-70 set on Multiply blending mode.
Give it a try, your effect should be improved! By the way: great job with the cables!

Thanks for the feedback Franck, this was a fun challenge.
I did the brush with help of Symmetry Tool and used grayscale instead of all black and white to eyes and mouth. To paint, or in this case , stamp with a brush used styles you use a new transparent layer for each style. It's the style which determines which colors you brush get. Don't try to find a meaningful translation! It is and remains a meaningless string of words whose content should not distract from the layout.

In publishing and graphic design, Lorem ipsum ( LOR-əm IP-səm) is a placeholder text commonly used to demonstrate the visual form of a document or a typeface without relying on meaningful content. The beginning of the original Latin text is cut off, and there have been various alterations and deletions. The original text, from Cicero, begins, "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." and translates as "No one loves pain in and of itself, or pursues it simply because it is pain." There's quite a detailed history (and a better translation!) here on the lipsum.com website, where you can also generate paragraphs and pages of dummy text.

… but you don't know the story behand the peoples you have overdo the left one.

  1. Exactly, we can't know that. The picture tells a family Christmas story. You have not added a different, explanatory story, although the ‘false colours’ have been mentioned several times.
  2. You have placed the picture in a feedback channel. Without further explanation from you, 99.9% of the time you will only receive hints and help on technical execution.
  3. Feedback: technically, there are several problems in the image:
  • a) The matching of the colours and the brightness of the people must be urgently adjusted.
  • b) The resolution of the individual images is too low, if possible rescan or use images with a higher resolution.
  • c) The cut-outs are very inaccurate. On the one hand, parts are missing, on the other hand, far too much has been ‘left out’.
  • d) The head at the bottom right is extremely distorted. Either this happened during editing - or the original image was already like this and the distortion should be significantly reduced.
  • e) A slight ‘shadow cast’ brings life and depth to the composition. Then the image doesn't look quite so flat and pasted on.

Those would be the most important points of criticism.
On the positive side:

  • a) You have chosen/designed a very nice border.
  • b) The background is well suited to the theme and the Christmas mood.
  • c) The font and font design look harmonious (even if I personally don't like the speckled blue drop shadow quite as much - but that's just my personal opinion)

Finally, an image in substract mode, which clearly shows the changed image areas between the two images. All bright or coloured visible areas have been edited.

I very much appreciate your words.
The ‘Subtract’ mode is not actually an independent mode. It is the blending of two similar but slightly different layers in the ‘Subtract’ blending mode.
The original and reprocessed+merged layers are directly above each other in the layers panel. The upper layer is set to the ‘Substract’ or ‘Difference’ layer blend mode.

PsCC 2024-45 Magical Holiday Custom Brushes Host Hoch.
A Holiday gift from me, 4 brushes 2 normal 2 stamp 2 sizes.
In this image I used a my brush as a "normal" brush in the BG and as a Pattern stamp brush with a patten in the foreground both with motions blur

wary swan
#

Stamp-Brush example left with Style, right with Pattern. To use this stamp brushes you must use Pattern stamp tool and combine with Pattern or Style (layer style) then you use Style it is one style/layer. I used 3 different styles also 3 layers to paint. But the you use Pattern you can have different pattern on same layer I used 4 patterns,.
If you look at images in your browser do you see any special effect in one of the images?

That's a lot of hard work, Hugh! You managed to put snow beautifully over the ground. If I were to add critique - I'd say you need to add more falling snow. More, more and more snow. Also add more snow over the roof of the house. It's Chrismas!!

Hi Hugh, Good composition. I specially like the way you blended the two images together. The choice of images was also good - shadows are all on the same side. Plus the way you made the snow fall in, and the darkening of the sides. This looks good.
But, I believe you can still play with the brightness and contrast settings of the final image that you put in the globe. With it, I think, you'll get more from this image.

Nicely done, @wary swan. I think you matched the colors and lighting well. It’s not obvious at all that your other flowers were AI generated. I might increase the brightness of the can or decrease the brightness of the flowers just to make the can stand out a bit since it’s the main subject but surrounded by some distracting elements. Just my opinion, but for the mud flap (great idea, by the way), I’m wondering if a white or black background would be better? To me, the peachy-color just doesn’t seem to fit with a semi’s mud flap. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@green crow I like that a lot. The GIF does not display correctly in Discord for iOS. At least on my phone. On my laptop though, it's fine.

thick owl
#

@obtuse marsh I love that you chose to display the packaging this way, but it is slightly hard to understand. Now that you have the design, I would focus on how you tell the story. If you were thinking about this in a professional setting, you would likely need to present this concept to a client for approval. What could you do in how you present it, that would ensure they love it?

obtuse marsh

I could present it in a 3d mockup, or maybe as a full size printed item? Would printing the record album be suitable for client meeting?

Nice job @coral stone ! I think if the yellow lines went up further, and turned inwards towards the text rather than getting cut off by the smoke that might look a bit better too. Just some random thoughts, nice work 😄

bleak fossil
#

Ooh, very nicely done @subtle hound I really like what you did with the composition and colors, great work! I think maybe the small text could be a different font? For some reason the current font doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the design, though I'm no font expert so I'm not too sure. Maybe something with slightly more structured edges.

uncut ginkgo
#

Thanks for sharing @subtle hound! I like the image and composition a lot. I know Comic Sans is not a crowd favorite, but (dare I say it) it doesn't look too bad here. You might want to try moving the 'Board' up slightly to avoid the O and the G from overlapping, it might be intentional but feels a bit distracting to me!

@woeful rune Love the color! Definitely communicates retro and fun!

uncut ginkgo
#

@woeful rune Awesome design and colors! I love the type choice and contrast. My only critique is that the T in retro comes across slightly as a 'z" -- at first glance. It could be interesting to make the angle different or overlap slightly less.

#

very saved by the bell indeed!

bleak fossil
#

Oh my goodness, I love it @woeful rune . I need to go put on a Saved By The Bell marathon now. The right side doesn't seem to quite fit with the rest of the image as much in my opinion... I think it could be interesting to try to add another swirl duplicated in the background underneath the big one but at a lower opacity, just to give it an added layer of depth the rest of the design seems to have. Either way that is awesome 😄

#

Nice job @rain hazel ! I think the solid hand/controller shape on the second one is a good choice, gives a more solid read and stands out from all the background patterns. My only critique might be to try lightening the background a bit. Currently all your values are fairly midtone, and that might give the image a better read with a stronger value range that makes all the other shapes pop a bit more.

@rain hazel I like the sword you used for your title background

stiff depot
#

Thanks @uncut ginkgo . Actually, there are only 2 fonts. They look different a bit because of the bold on the pizzaria name -- I think that's what the issue might be. Should I refrain from changing the font from regular to bold for consistency's sake? Or is it some other aspect of the fonts that is the issue? I can easily change the font or colors. Thank you.

uncut ginkgo
#

Cool invite lani! It is somewhat tough to read 'rare game' and 'game on at' -- I think you're in between breaking the mold and playing by the rules.. so I would encourage you to push the concept even farther. Maybe you could repeat the 'rare game' text up the left margin?

severe dust
#

@stiff depot quick edit: "Pizzaria" should be "Pizzeria" also, play with that text in the bottom left corner it's hard to read. Can the "2019" move up to to the date? Nice work, esp. on the cutout of the hockey player!

uncut ginkgo
#

Of course! I see now, Trixie! I think the bold works for Tony's Pizzeria. I think what it is.. is that the PLAYOFFS and Pizzeria are both very bold, where the date/time feels 'sharp' -- I'd just keep exploring type weights and placement. Just a suggestion but maybe Tony's Pizzeria can be moved down and to the left (so it doesn't overlap the player's wrist) -- you could remove the name/date stamp also.

@severe dust Spelling! Oy! It looked kinda wrong, but I didn't check it. Will fix right away. Thanks. The stuff at the bottom left is my "signature" so it's more of a glyph than something legible. Thanks for the compliment on the hockey player. The cutout wasn't too tough.

Cool work @urban granite ! And lovely illustratrion, that is super good! The Tuesday 05/19 is a bit hard to read in the left column like that. Maybe you could prioritize placing that in the right yellow column (make the first box slightly longer and remove a little bit of text from the second). @errant gazelle thanks for sharing! The board game and drink background feels very fun. As for type, try removing the drop shadow from the font, it might make it more crisp! I'd also like to see more space between Games and Snacks provided and "BYOB"

@hot reef hey I like the idea you're going for here, but I would suggest playing with the layer styles on the font to possibly help it stand out against the background? that or try a shape layer with the fill of a gradient of color + transparent just behind some of the text? @true nova Nice! One thing to consider is that the blue text on back background might be a little difficult to read for some people. might want to try something with alittle higher contrast

well done @true nova ! The blue font would probably be quite tough to print because of the surrounding black, but since we're not printing them it doesn't matter ^^. I mean technically you can't rotate pixels like this when doing actual pixel art but I think it totally works in your design!

#

@quaint goblet I like how you removed the backgound behind the boardgame! It can be quite tough to achieve a realistic edge especially when the object is slightly blurred but you did it! However, the edge right here looks a bit off. maybe you could find a different image where the entire board is in the frame so you don't have to cut it off

@modest rock Very nice design!! So nostalgic! I wonder if ihe red text in the (brown background) would pop more if there was a black text or shadow under it to give it a bit more depth you.. but overall, this is amazing!

@dark nexus I love your so much! Very good placement of text and colors. I think the only thing I notice is that it isn't fully centered. Like the space on the left isn't the same as the space on the right.

@foggy spade Really original artwork, I love it. I would only work a bit on the margins, and reduce the size of the whole content to give more air.

Thanks @lyric dome you are right about that. Dropped a ruler but it was wrong, sometimes the snap function gets a bit tricky in PS 😩 I will correct that. Thanks again for the feedback

Nice @knotty sail ! One thing I might suggest would be possibly simplifying your color scheme a bit more. Usually it's good to use a few colors and stick to those throughout the design for consistency and readability. Things can get a bit chaotic and busy looking with too many different colors. Illustrator or not, glad you joined us 😄

Very nice @raven sage ! Solid design and nice improvement over the previous one IMO. Nice work.

Nice job @modest rock Very simple and effective, that's a good idea.

I think I like the first one a bit more @young karma The second one feels a bit chaotic to me. It might also be nice to see some of the smaller text maybe have a color to it. Maybe something from the image, like the blue light or orange fire light. Or even just lowering the opacity ever so slightly. Nice work!

Day 1, really pleased I managed to pull my own assets in. The lady was doing VR in a mall in Beijing China (I was there in November 2018) so I had to use her 😃 and the background is a sunset in China during the same trip. I drew the shape behind the text with the pen tool, turned it into a shape but couldn't figure out how to change the colour (I wanted white but couldn't figure out how to do it so turned the opacity down and changed the text colour). Thanks for checking out this newbie's work.

So, for this challenge, I mainly learned how to create a background using a fill pattern, which I'm pretty proud of! I didn't pay attention to the text, since I'm at work. Hopefully you like it! 😃

@shut crow It's a good start! I would move the date to be closer down to the line under it. Also the shapes and 'block game' text feel a bit like its not anchored to anything, maybe you could try moving them so the start of 'block game' aligns with the end of 'game night'. Or maybe either put it in the center or more to the side? Just try moving things around and see what looks good! I like the concept. 😃

#

@young karma I would try making the top text a bit less bold and smaller, putting it right over 'game night' and moving the time down to the location!

#

oh I saw now that you had changed it, I was looking at the one before. From what the first one where the text was straight I suggest those changes!
