Also what made u into it? If it’s another person you could ask if they could teach you the basics and maybe include u in a session or two since I found that beginners learn the best through actual play since cramming all the rules can be difficult and it’s easier to forget them without practical application
im new to all of this too and it is a little initiating
So me and my friend which are new to DND we're #750812887697588356 and his discord is broken so we call in snap but in short case we're idiots and very lost looking for a sadistic dm to torture pore lost souls
I’m having some trouble coming up with a background for my tiefling warlock she’s my first character
Do you mean coming up with a backstory, or deciding which Background from the list in the book to choose?
I'm like really new to D&D and am not sure how to navigate the character sheet could somebody show me what everything on it does and what it is and stuff?
What I'm trying to say Is I don't really understand the character sheet
I'll do my best to assist
Thank you
How do I choose a sub class for my ranger on the character builder?
On the Class tab of the character editor, once you’ve reached level 3, you should be given a choice.
It’s the Ranger Archetype feature.
Ok thanks
im new
I'm new
Hi new, I'm Lionn.
And now that the dad joke is over. Welcome to the community ☺️
Thanks ☺
Where can i find a campaign to join
That also take newbies like me
You can check the looking for channels in this server. Will tag them below
?looking
We have four channels to help you find your next game:
• #looking-for-players — Dungeon Masters/groups looking for players.
• #750812887697588356 — Players or groups looking for Dungeon Masters.
• #looking-for-community — Communities looking for members.
• #paid-looking-for-game — Professional DMs advertising services.
If you can’t see any of these channels, you will need to head to #880965682462875679 and select the appropriate role depending on exactly what you're looking for.
Thanks for telling me 😊
No problem. Also heard people recommend Roll20 forums and reddit's r/lfg as alternative places to look :)
So do we just find people who play on here
Yep, check out the channels in the message just a little up the feed
Cool thanks
Is that roll20 is free
I believe they have a free account with limited features and a subscription for extended features. I think those are all DM side, but someone familiar with it might know better
Thanks again 😊
I want to get into D&D but i dont know where to start could anyone help me out
welcome, check out the links in the message that is pinned to this channel
it has the free basic rules as well as a couple of other helpful links
Check out the pinned messages here in the channel.
The free basic rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I suggest watching a few games being played on YouTube/Twitch and then try making a character sheet yourself.
Then find a group to play with.
But if you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask those, too!
how do I go about making character a sheet?
You can do that here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
If you click “Show Help Text”, it will walk you through the different steps.
A DnDBeyond account allows you to create up to 6 characters using their digital tools.
Or you can print off a character sheet (https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf) and fill it in following the rules outlined in the free basic rules.
there are also some premade character sheets on the wotc website if you wanna see a fully filled out one
But mostly it just follows the first few chapters of the free Basic Rules, in order.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
u so im making a campain for my firends and its the first time im doing that. I alr played abit of D&D but that was a while ago and i wast not the dungon master so first time for me. I made a campain on the website now but idk what i need to do to acctualy host it. (like were can i put in a map, .....) Can anyone maybe help?
You can use sites like roll20 if you want to have battle maps and such, but if you want to do theater of mind just use discord
The dndbeyond campaign is to share character sheets and, if someone has a master-tier subscription, any books. For maps, it depends on the kind of map.
- For a general world map, google drive or something is probably fine.
- For a battlemap where everyone moves tokens around, you'll want a VTT. I recommend https://owlbear.rodeo as it's the simplest offering and it's free, but there are other options.
could u maybe send me that link?
would be great
how do I play a battle master
I don't know what I do as a battle master
The main idea is that they get special combat moves called maneuvers. There’s a pretty big list to choose from.
How and when you use each maneuver depends on which ones you pick.
But it’s a pretty popular subclass because the variety of maneuvers can be used to fit a lot of different play styles.
Im doing a one piece D&D I want to be like a roger
So which maneuver should I get because Im only level 5
Not sure what you mean by “roger”…
His the pirate king in one piece
If you’ve got Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, there’s a whole list of suggested Battle Master builds, though. You might find some suggestions there.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/tcoe/fighter#BattleMasterBuilds
Or you could try asking in #character-discussion if anyone’s familiar with that character and has any ideas.
How do I use dark one blessing it says special and no action apart of it?
when you reduce a hostile creature to 0 hit points, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier + your warlock level (minimum of 1).
You get it when you reduce a hostile creature to 0 hp, that's it.
Do I need to ask to do it for an action or is it auto?
it's not an action
So just auto?
It does what it says, yes. You reduce a hostile creature to 0hp, you get your THP.
Okay thanks
Things do what they say they do. It just works.
Do I need own all the books to play dnd
No - technically you can play D&D with just the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That said, the different books (particularly the Players Handbook) add additional rules and features that can enhance your D&D game experience.
Question: I was looking to run stuff after finishing Lost Mine of Phandelver and using the dndbeyond tools.
Is this the right thing to buy for the Rick and Morty one? I wanted the adventure and stuff associated https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/adventures/dungeons-dragons-vs-rick-and-morty
I purchased the wrong thing before thinking it was an adventure
Yeah, that’s the Rick and Morty one.
The book gives a Dungeon Master everything needed to play:
• A 64-page D&D beginners rulebook filled with Rick’s commentary
• A 32-page adventure, The Lost Dungeon of Rickness, for levels 1-3
If any brand spankin new players need help with character creation just hmu
you want #dnd-rules
My apology
s'all good, no need to apologise
I've heard that martial classes are weak compared to casters
like comparing a baby to a nuke
it's all in how you play it. but yes, generally speaking, casters are stronger than martials at higher levels.
Depends on the martial
explain please
Rogues can be considered a martial class, but their sneak attack can gain them still pretty solid single target damage consistently. Strong survivability comes from things like Evasion and Uncanny Dodge. And they are generally decent for out of combat scenarios as well (since not all DnD is strictly combat based) because of features like Reliable Talent which lets them take 10 on proficient skill checks.
Are Rogues the only martial class that scale well?
A samurai fighter built for crit fishing is going to be reasonably strong at higher levels as well. It can depend a lot how you build, what subclass you take, and how you use the features provided to you.
My 20th level bear totem barbarian/battle master fighter does around 48 damage a round, on the other hand, the 20th level wizard does around 84 damage on a round.
this is from a one shot I played
but how long can the wizard go, and how well does a wizard do against something with magic resistance
can the wizard take a con save, can a wizard tank damage
Pure martials mostly won't compete with the overall total damage potential of a pure caster. There are also some half-caster half martial classes like Paladin that can nove much the same way Rogue's sneak attack can. Monk can output solid average damage on a round to round basis though not as high spikes as rogue or paladin. Rangers can do higher mid range depending on subclass. And then of course survivability is a factor. Wizard will be the first to die when focused hard. Barbarian is going to last through most things.
I mean, if you build them for it, yeah they can
i was thinking Artificer 1/abjuration X
Abjuration is the way, but it's still hard to compete with a bear totem barb's effective 600HP.
a barbarian can have 300hp?
that means you gotta roll max on the hit die
(600 is because it's not hard to get 300 on a barb, and halving all damage types makes it effectively double the HP)
I think the max HP of a barb with average HP is around 340 or so
taking tough feat, max con and hill dwarf
Which is why I said effective HP
12 x 20 = 240 + 40 = 280 + hill dwarf is around +20 aswell?
idk if I did the math correctly
+5 every level from con
max con is 24 so +7 at level 20
not accounting for ability score increases, that's 400 health, assuming you rolled max on hit die and did all the aforementioned things
Oh right, that too. +7. Then, like I said, they have resistance to (almost) every damage type. That means that anything they resist, they effectively have double their listed HP. If you make your bear totem barb a Gith you resist literally every damage type.
you jump up like 40hp at barb 20
kalashtar are cooler smh
but hill dwarf get that +20 health if you're level 20 I think
but you either get resistance to psychic or 20 extra health
so pick your poison
i would never assume max rolls on hit dice. Makes no sense to. I always assume average HP was taken
or resistance in this case
Basically I pick resistance if my DM started compensating for my resistance by using a lot of psychic damage creatures.
also, Emerald Dragonborn are the better pick if you want psychic resistance imo.
(This is what happened the last time I chose a totem barb, so if I did again I would pick a Gith or Kalashtar or Emerald Dragonborn, yeah)
In that case, (6x20) + (2x20) + (7x20)
so 300 health
which turns into 600 when raging
345 HP if you are a hill dwarf with tough.
I accounted for tough? That was the 2x20. Which I think is the tough feat's max?
I might be wrong
12 (level 1) +20 (Dwarf) + 40 (tough) + 19 * 7 (Hit dice) + 20*7 (con score)
why is it x7?
average HP for a d12 is 7. Con mod at level 20 is +7
isn't the average 6?
its mathematically 6.5, but with HP it gets rounded up
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ClassFeaturesandHitDice
Each time you gain a level, you gain 1 additional Hit Die. Roll that Hit Die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total (minimum of 1) to your hit point maximum. Alternatively, you can use the fixed value shown in your class entry, which is the average result of the die roll (rounded up).
cool, thanks
im new and i have made a charicter called sulfur the child is there any way i can play with randos on d&d beyond?
Hi, ive never played before but I really want too tbh, cant wait to meet some new friends
Not to my knowlegde but you could find a group somewhere on roll 20 but im sure there are discord servers that are like "find a group" but not on dnd beyond.
We have four channels to help you find your next game:

Well I see it clearly Im blind
Safe to assume everyone here uses D&D Beyond, at least. 😜
If I want to purchase armor for a warlock class does anyone have suggestions to what I can get or where to find it
Warlocks only have proficiency in light armor. Studded leather is the best light armor you can get.
I'm new to the game so don't use anything yet. Im trying to understand what sorts of issues could be yet to be solved.
Regarding new players, specially
But it's open source related
I don't want to charge anything or compete against anyone
@harsh pewter this is not the place to solicit feedback and research for your app
You can post in #dnd-advertisements if your want to canvas for data
I realize now DD Beyond has an app
I was told this discord could have some info
Thanks!
I'm sorry if that was a somehow offensive
Not 'offensive', just not following server rules
Thank you for the clarification
how do you find mounts in dnd specifically?
The one that can fly while riding or riding on land or in water.
That’s all up to your DM.
With the exception of the Find Greater Steed spell, or drakewarden ranger.
Okay thanks
So, recovering from burn-out and finally have enough energy to play DnD for the first time. I just attempted to make a character using the character app. I don't know what to do about the backstory and, like, appearance. I know I was thinking of the wizard in the woods of princess bride when I made the character. Can someone help?
Also, should I make this character and then advertise in looking for a dm? or should I advertise and make a backstory to match a game? (I've done art role play games but never officially DnD and know Oh so little about the game but have always been interested.)
You can keep the character concept, but I would work with your DM when you find them to fit your character into their campaign
What would y'all suggest I read up on that's free to learn how to be a good player? One thing that's kept me from trying to look for a game is I don't know proper etiquette and don't want to be the jerk during the session.
Work with the DM and players to make sure everyone is having fun
Oh totally
so, I just went to my comic book shop and they said the number one way to find a campaign is online because everyone from the shop went online from covid. Because I'm incredibly new to the game, I am aware not everyone would want someone with such little experience. I know I can advertise in the player chat but is there anywhere else you suggest looking?
Hello, everybody, quick question... Are contents on D&D Beyond available in Spanish? Like, I bought the PHB, of course it is in english, is it possible to switch to Spanish? Thanks
Check out the #looking-for-players - that’s DMs looking for players. Generally most groups are fine with new players if the player is engaged, consistent, and meshes well with the group
Aside from the Italian PHB, the site is currently available in English only.
The Italian PHB was added to start exploring support for other languages, though. There's a page here that talks about those efforts, plus a link at the bottom where you can provide feedback on the process.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/italian-translation
Thank you
Awesome! I'll check it out. Im nervous for having a player one also I thought you said enraged and figured I could get there.
question im going to be playing d&d for the first time on friday essentially any tips
Check out the pinned links in this channel, but the main thing would be to give the basic rules a read through
Sometimes a chest is just a chest, but dont bet on it
Light a torch when opening a sarcophagus
Always trust the flumphs
before drinking from a fountain or pool, toss a copper coin into it
No one carves statues of frightened warriors
funnily enough, that one's actually not very common sense.
I'ma have to remember that...
While this advice is funny, it's not necessarily helpful to newcomers, which is the purpose of the channel. As per the channel description "We ask people focus on the basics"
Yes, but still, we try and keep the advice here simple and relevant to actually getting started
Is Skyrim a good way to find out what DND is like?
Not really, no
can someone help me learn how to dnd?
I and many other people in this channel can help answer any questions you might have
ok
I can help with character creation but im probably going to kill you
why?
Its really, really easy to kill new players
Theyre forget to put on armor
They'll write in health manually and give a barbarian 1+3=4
@covert orchid Once again, please keep any advice or help to the fundamentals. Tropes, memes, and assumptions about the game are not helpful to newcomers
Fighters can be more specialised to different fighting styles and can wear heavy armour, while the main feature of a barbarian is Rage which halves their damage from physical attacks
do their have to wear heavy armour?
No, you can have your fighter wearing medium armour if you prefer. You can also choose to do a STR based or DEX based fighter depending on how you envision them :)
ok
In theory, there is nothing to stop you not wearing any armour other than you will be a lot easier to hit
ok
Idk what assumption youre talking about. I was offering help and warning them of my own experience with new players
The only assumption here is that you assume im joking
I didn't assume you were joking, I was taking your advice as sincerely given and letting you know it's outside the scope of this channel as a place for discussing the rudimentary basics of the game
hi guys
Hey guys
Well met everyone
Hello fellow dungeon masters
i want to start playin D&D but i dont know how to play it so is there a newcomers guide also i have no friends that play D&D so is thier a website or a thing on beyond that can help get a party together
Check the pinned messages for new player guides include the free Basic rules.
You can search for DMs looking for players in #looking-for-players or post as a player in #750812887697588356 :)
thank you
Hellew everyone! im new to DnD and i need a lil help and people to play with
See my last post just above :)
Thankkkeeyew
What up!
🖖🏻
Hello 🙂 I am new here but not new to D&D, despite not having played a single campaign.
reddit has r/lfg but not all those games are dnd
Bello how Is every1?
Hi
Hey y’all, it’s the new kid on the block here!!!
hey i'm also new here
Hello
Welcome, folks!
I'm new here, can I join some campaign?
That's not how that works
You'll want to go to our game finding channels and either post that you're looking for a game, or reply to a post that has spaces

so, Hello, i'm new here.
I know about dnd, the idea, some gameplay, spells and all that jazz, but idk how to play actually. Let alone use dnd beyond.
idk where to start actually, i joined this server like, months ago without sending a single message.
If you have any advice can you mention me?
how do side missions work? for example: the party talks to an NPC and the NPC asks the party to do something or to kill something/someone.
They can choose to do that or not. Just like they can choose to follow what you would consider to be the main quest or not.
Welcome! As far as using DDB goes, this article can walk you through the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/754-how-to-play-dungeons-dragons-using-d-d-beyond
thanks a lot : >
I can help you
oh please, thank you!
i already created a character with a rather simple backstory.
also i heard that barbarian is easiest class for beginners, so i made one.
i guess i can just rage every turn lol
you only need to rage once per encounter
oh, so it lasts the entire combat?
it lasts for an entire minute
most combats last only like, 12 or 18 seconds.
(each round is 6 seconds, most combats last 2 or 3 rounds)
Your rage lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are knocked unconscious or if your turn ends and you haven’t attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then. You can also end your rage on your turn as a bonus action.
Once you have raged the number of times shown for your barbarian level in the Rages column of the Barbarian table, you must finish a long rest before you can rage again.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/barbarian#Rage-51
oh thanks spam
One minute is 10 rounds of combat.
So you still might have to rage multiple times per encounter based on what you do
not really, it only ends if knocked unconscious or if they don't make attacks, or take damage
The point was that it can end, at which point you'd have to rage again to keep it going.
Hi
might be the wrong chat for this but im looking to start playing -- anyone know where a new comer can find a group that will also teach ?
There's plenty of beginner-friendly games out there. We've got a few channels to help you look:

Hi again 🙂 quick question: are there any sourcebooks that include undead races as playable for dnd players? Not only npc monsters, thanks
How does levelling up works?
im kinda new to dnd anyone know someone who can play idk what the normal wait time for a game is and im ready to play is it normal to play every day or is that rare? sorry if thats a stupid question ive only played irl with my brother and im trying to figure out the basics
There are no undead races, the closest are the 'gothic lineages' in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft
One you have enough experience, or you DM tells you you've reached a milestone, you level up
There is no 'normal wait time'. It can take days, weeks, or months to find a game
And how do I (the DM) know how much experience each player has?
okay thanks for the help 🙂
Thank you so much
If you’re using XP, there’s a table in the PHB.
Otherwise, they level up when you feel like the party has earned it.
typically you would ask them.
Does anyone know a website to create a D&D club logo?
Any online image editor tool or service would probably work - don't know any off the top of my head but pretty sure an internet search will find some for you
Hey everyone! I am just getting ready to have my first session today getting walked through making characters and stuff. Bought the player bundle and am super stoked to play! hope you are all having a wonderful day and wish me luck!
good luck dude hope you have a great first session and enjoy the heck out of it! cant wait to hear how it goes 😄
There’s an article here with advice for making your first character.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/724-new-players-guide-making-your-first-character
But if you’ve got any more specific questions, feel free to ask!
Hi. I just found out about dnd and wanted to try it. Do I need some books or something?
Hello! I was wondering if there are any classes or races that are easy to pick up for new players?
Fighters, barbarians, and rogues tend to be a bit easier to pick up - but feel free to play whatever tickles your fancy.
They tend to be easier because you don't have to manage spell casting and spells on top of all the other game mechanics.
Ah okay that makes sense what about races? Is there any that are a bit easier or does it not really matter?
Doesn't matter as much but human is easy if a bit vanilla.
Hello! Just started playing DnD and have 2 questions 1) Are there any Aztec gods or the like in DnD? 2) Is there a formal universe(s) in DnD that every DnD player should know about? For example how in marvel there is knowledge of the ‘Nine realms’ and even though it’s not explicitly explained everywhere those that know about Asgard know about it…? Or is every campaign setting/world it’s own thing that not every DnD player knows about? If so, are there books that I can read about these universes/history about them? I’m confused between guides and books that describe campaigns…or maybe it’s all same? Thanks in advance!
- Not that I know of in 5e but there were in past editions. However, we usually say "flavor is free", so there's nothing stopping you working with your DM to create your own Aztec themed gods.
- There are different campaign settings. Faerun (Toril), Eberron, Ravnica, Wildemount to name a few. The last three have specific books you can read up on them. The first is one of the original D&D worlds so there's ridiculous amounts of lore and numerous books behind it. The Forgotten Realms wiki is your best bet. As a player you don't need to know the ins and outs of each setting as your DM can help with that.
Finally the differences in books: generally Sourcebooks provide info on campaign settings, player options etc and Adventure books describe campaigns.
Also to note - D&D itself is trying to move beyond "one true lore" - so don't get too stuck on "having to know it all" and focus on what's important lore for your table and games you play in.
Perfect thanks 🙏
Very good to know! Thanks
Van richtens guide to ravenloft does
Probably a better question for #dm-discussion
Makes sense, will post it there instead!
update for my character creation session. going to run a Mountain Dwarf Paladin, thinking oath of ancients or oath of glory went real smooth and super stoked to start our first session in a week or so.
That's awesome to hear. Have fun
can someone help me on how to do the ability when making a character
The three major options are
- rolling for the stats, which can be roll 4 d6 and drop the lowest roll, but your DM might prefer a different method.
- Standard Array which gives 6 set values that you can assign to whatever ability you want
- Point buy, which gives you a certain number of points to buy the abilities scores you want. Standard Array is a possible combination found in Point Buy
thanks
Your DM might require a specific method, or have their own rules for it, though. I’d suggest asking them first.
Or if you haven’t found a DM yet, Standard Array or Point Buy are probably the safer choices for now.
so like, can DMs just start campaigns here and wait for people to join?
how can i join a game in the first place?

so i just throw a message in #750812887697588356 and wait for a dm to pick me for there campaign with other players?
Or browse the #looking-for-players messages and PM the ones that seem interesting.
ahh i see
how can I make the players to introduce the characters to each other?
I've thought about every player receiving a letter from a mysterious man telling them to go somewhere. The players go and get locked up by a local corrupt official and then they need to cooperate to escape... but first introduce themselves
the problem is that I do not have any ideas on what to write on the letter...
Ultimately it's up to the players to interact with each other. If you're looking for a good starting point, having someone post a notice that they're looking to hire people for a job(like escorting a trade caravan, killing the wolves that have been terrorizing a local farm, finding a lost family member etc) can make it easy, just have the person hiring them ask each of them who they are and why they think they're up to the task. That'll give each player a chance to say a little about their character and what they do. If you're setting up a prison break type situation(one of the published campaigns actually starts this way), they might not feel like sharing much beyond names and what abilities they have that could help them escape. And that's fine, there will be time for getting to know each other once they're safely away. 🙂
ok! thx
Thank you, LichDom, it is really similar to what I was looking for, but not quite... I was looking for something like a "living skeleton" xD
Didn't know that
hey so i just signed up for DnD Beyond website cause things kept pointing to that. but i was hoping someone could please teach me how to play this, im 26 about to be 27 and i figured now is better than never.
Welcome! There’s a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages here that can get you started, but feel free to ask any specific questions you’ve got, too.
awesome im about to check those out thank you so much, but my main question is this, it says on google that there is a way to play online with the DnD beyond website, how do i do this?
i made a character but i have been searching all day to play it with some people, is there another website to go to? and i have the free account for rn till i get paid next. just thought that would help with the answers im trying to find, but i suck with computers hahaha

Hello all. Never player before, considering giving it a go. Any good sites to find groups in your area?
For actual in-person games look for comic and game stores.
You can also find online groups to play with here on this sever.

I question some of these weights. Why does a day's rations weigh 20 pounds? Does a bedroom really weigh 7 pounds?
Rations (1 day)
0.5gp, 2 lbs.
it's not 20, it comes in bundles of 10 I think, which then weigh 20 pounds total.
A bedroll is 7 pounds of bedding and blanket, and can be used as a stretcher if needed. It's heavy, since you need some material to bed on.
A standard sleeping bag, made of modern, lightweight materials weighs typically between 3 and 5 pounds
A D&D bedroll will be heavy cotton, usually waxed. No nylon shell, no polyester filler. Just good old heavy cotton
Oh OK, the character sheet just says 1 day of rations. When I click it I see it says it's actually 10 days
rations (1 day) but there's 10 of them, yeah
I'm sorry if this is a little off topic but I don't know where too put it.
I'm a new dnd player and I'm looking for a few people to help me through my first campaign, I get most of the character creation and general ways of how to play but I have no one else to play with. Its a lot harder to learn how to play correctly and was thinking I would just go straight for it and look for people to play with.
Preferably on weekends as I'm usually busy during the week but any help is worth it
didn't want to post in looking for players as I wasn't sure if I could fit this into the template
Are you in the MAIN dnd server?
This is a server based on the website dndbeyond
im the dumbest person in the whole world
Im just asking because a lot of new people are in this one and not that one
im sorry
Nah nah nah dont be sorry, brotatoe
In both servers youd get the same "just go to the LFG channels"

Hes not here anymore
Hi! pleasure to be here!
Hi nice to be here
Hello there
Hey there
greatings from Switzerland
new here
langues Ger/Eng
Hiya, new here as well- (Though knew about DnD for a while due to friends, finally made character though-)
Hello, im fairly new to DnD as a whole. I've known about it I've just recently delved into the rabbit hole.
Welcome, folks!
Gday everyone
Yo
HELLOOOOO!!
as you can probably tell,i’m young
and a gacha kid™️ lmao
nice too meet you all! :D
hello
welcome!
Hi
Welcome! There’s an article here with some advice, but feel free to ask any specific questions you have, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/724-new-players-guide-making-your-first-character
Thanks for the help 😄
Thank you!
Hey everyone. I’m pretty new here but I do love making stories and characters. I’ve played two or three different home brew one shots and a “DM’ed” few games my younger siblings call “Dungeon & Dragons” but are definitely not that. I’d like to try to play a real game eventually having listened to some critical roll.
I'm in the same situation, I just started a DND campaign this year with some friends and I've made some half-hearted attempts at DND before but the campaign was never completed because of time issues. I also got interested in DND after watching CR and I'm trying to make more of an effort with my characters but it definitely takes some work on my part since I lack creativity for most of it.
hello my frendings im BRAND new to the game ive been wanting take some interest for a while but i had no idea im looking at the character making screen rn and im mega lost.-. Dm pls
Welcome! There’s an article here with some advice, but feel free to ask any specific questions you have, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/724-new-players-guide-making-your-first-character
Where exactly are you stuck?
wsp people! im really new to dnd and i barely know anything about it i have quite a few questions but i have barely researched at all so im taking my time.
Welcome! There’s some helpful stater links in the pinned messages here, but if you’ve got specific questions, ask away!
so im very new to dnd and i was wondering, after i create an encounter, i run it, and i roll initiative, what do i do next?
Combat starts with the creature who rolled the highest initiative. They take their turn, then it goes to the next highest.
If a campaign calls for creating level 7 characters and I want to multiclass, should the levels of all classes add up to 7? Like a level 3 fighter/level 4 thief?
Correct - level 7 means the cumulative level of the character, whether they single class or multiclass, should add up to 7.
I kinda want to set up a game based around the 1800s, pirates, privateers and navy type stuff. I’ve got tones of ideas for such a thing but also, I really wanna play such a thing myself! Ahh, well.
You might like taking a look at the Ghosts of Saltmarsh adventure which has some nautical game mechanic elements and flavor.
one more question what do strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma do
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores
They are what they are. Strength, how much you can carry, your melee weapon attacks, strength saving throws against effects such as restraints. Dexterity, your agility and reflex, used for ranged weapon attacks, you can use it for melee weapons with finesse, it helps your armor class as you avoid attacks, used for many effects such as trying to avoid damage from explosions. Constitution, gives you bonus hit points, helps you tough out poison, cold, many life-draining effects.
Intelligence is memory and pure logic-computing ability, Wizards cast spells with it.
Wisdom is how in-tune you are with the world, governing your characters senses and intuition.
Charisma deals in your 'social' skills, persuasion, performance, deception, intimidation, as well as saving throws against effects such as a ghost possessing you, or if you're being banished to another plane.
They're explained in the Basic Rules and the Players Handbook in Chapter 1, and in more detail in Chapter 7
Is Spelljammer a good adventure to get started on D&D if you've never played before?
I wouldn't think so. Lost Mines of Phandelver is a good starter, though.
yeah, you start with a scry 1, then-
I was thinking that getting started on spelljammer would be a good way to implement the fact that i've never been in any of the D&D universes to my character's lore. he can be a stow away or something.
im trying to come up with a good character and maybe a campaing that makes people overlook the fact i've never played before
take a step back, and just realize, it's fine
you've got to start somewhere. There's probably plenty of new player friendly games in #looking-for-players .
Playing a few pickup games would also probably help you DM better, even if you intend to mostly DM.
thanks y'all.
Hello all
Hello
Is here any experienced player who would answer lot of stupid question from newbie (on private) ?? xD
Feel free to ask them in here!
We have a channel dedicated to newcomers; we welcome questions so no need to ask them in private
its to much xD i will spam this chat so badly xD
Well start asking and someone will likely direct you to a resource where you can find answers yourself
Ok so basically me and my friends want to start our first game soon and i just got myself DnD Starter set and essential kit. We picked someone who will be DM and now is our biggest problem xD creating characters....
i was watching some YT tutorials and all but it is to much numbers and all xD
picking spells, if we will play multiclasses or not, and more xD
Have you checked out the chapter in the basic rules on step by step character creation?
yes i know so so how to do it but im lost with this spells cantrips and all
Your class description will tell you how many spells, including cantrips, you can pick and/or prepare
we decided that we want to roll for stats
As for multiclassing, that's an optional rule that you can just ignore if you're new
ok so we will just ignore multiclass for start
so lets say my friend want to play druid and other one want to play ranger
so druid have different amount of spells than ranger ?
and it will be in rules somewhere
Yep, their class descriptions will explain it all
ok
Usually in the class table at the start
let me open my boxes and i will look for it xD
I've got to go, so won't be able to answer any more Qs but there are loads of people here who will
rulebook ?
ok thanks anyway have a good night
oops i just notice that in rulebook is no class i want to play xD
I believe the Essential Kit has the character creation rules in its rule booklet. Otherwise you can find them here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
All the classes (except Artificers) are available there with one subclass each
in my rulebook is only bard, cleric, fighter, rogue and wizard :/
so ill have to dive to some webside 😛
Those are probably for the pre generated characters in the box
they are but we didnt like them xD
we wanted to create our characters from very start
Then check the basic rules I linked, it goes through making your own characters
Shoot!
i wanted to play warlock
A lot of cool options for you to do with warlock RP wise
i know thats why i love it so much xD
but it have this one think i have to check how it is called xD
brb
I played a warlock / paladin multi class once where his family was murdered and his god didn’t answer his prayer so a devil did
Have a player character whose backstory is "I prayed for someone to save my town. I think it was an angel, but it is really a devil"
im back my daughter was crying :/
thats nice ideas 🙂 but i have my own coz i want to play realy evil man 😛
but back to my question
warlock have this patrons and when i was trying to create character on dndbeyond.com it was only one to pick (the Fiend) but on YT i saw more of them
do i have to start from the Fiend or i can pick what i want from start
You just pick the patron you want at the start, yeah
Yeah as far as I know. Though I don't personally have encyclopedic knowledge of whether any of them have conditions. If you don't have the info for them handy, it might make your life harder, but the goal of the game is to play what you want.
The free Basic Rules contain one subclass for each class (except artificer).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Hexblade is found in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, or you can purchase just the subclass if you’re not ready for the full book.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/xanathars-guide-to-everything
If you do get the subclass by itself, whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too.
Same goes for the Genie, in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/tashas-cauldron-of-everything
Keep in mind that D&D is not a single-player game, you're a member of a party. If you want to play an evil character, make sure that's something that will work with the group.
Hello I just played my first game of dnd yesterday irl with some friends and im trying to recreate my character on dnd beyond and was wondering why i cant find the illusion wizard tradition?
you need to own the content on DnD Beyond. Illusion isn't offered for free, but in the PHB.
I see and is there a way to print out my character sheet and isnt in the pdf format? or does it have to be pdf
there is no way to change the export to anything that isn't a PDF, no.
You can buy just the Illusion subclass on this page if you don't want to invest in the whole Player's Handbook.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook
I see ok ty
so does dnd beyond do online games? id be interested to try one
i really enjoyed playing yesterday with my friends

ill give that a look into tyvm
Does anyone do dnd on Mondays to Thursdays there the only days i have off XD
You can check what games are available (and when) in #looking-for-players. If you see one you like, just send the user a direct message to discuss.
Can anyone explain to me in a simple but informative way, how the hell multiclassing works
Generally speaking, you get the features of each class based on your individual level in that class.
So a ranger 3 / fighter 1 would have the same features as a 3rd-level ranger plus a 1st-level fighter.
There are requirements to be able to multiclass (including the fact that multiclassing at all is an optional rule, so it depends on DM approval).
There's also specific exceptions to how class features combine -- particularly spellcasting.
You can find the full rules for multiclassing here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
Or if you've got any more specific questions, we can answer those, too.
Can you wield 2 swords in combat? If you can, how does it work, do you just attack with one weapon?
If you’ve got two hands, you can hold two swords… unless that weapon has the Two-Handed property.
I mean, how does it affect combat.
Or is it just for RP purpose?
If both weapons have the Light property, you can use Two-Weapon Fighting.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
Or if you have Extra Attack, you’d be able to choose which weapon to attack with for each attack.
Oh, ok, thanks
If you want to go all-in on it, you’ll probably also want to get the Dual Wielder feat:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats/dual-wielder
Oh, well I didnt but that book so I cant acces.
That removes the requirement for the weapons to have the Light property, so you could dual-wield something like longswords.
Plus a couple other bonuses.
Hmm, interesting, to get acces I have to pay or is there a free trial?
And thanks a lot for your help.
Everything in the Basic Rules is available for free:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That feat is normally included in the Players Handbook, but you can buy just the feat by itself if you’re not ready for the full book.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too.
When I first started, I was able to find the book at my local library.
Oh, I already got the book.
I just dont want to buy the virtual one yet.
hi i'm a newbie and i would like to try a solo adventure preferably free any seggestions
Dnd isn't really designed for solo play. You might be able to find some stuff on DM's Guild that might try to fiddle the system to make it possible to play solo, but I have no experience of it
ok thanks
@stiff herald Ironsworn is a free fantasy TRPG designed for solo play.
libraries still exist?
yes and they are amazing magical places
If you do own the physical book, you can use DDB’s homebrew tools to recreate that content for free. (For private use only, though; please don’t publish it to the global community.)
Are there any working codes?
The only active codes at the moment are the ones include in the Essentials Kit.
(Sales on the site aren’t typically handled through codes.)
How do characters work
What does (1d8 per warlock level mean
This is all explained in the basic rules. Have you read them (or at least the part about character creation)?
Check the pinned message for the link
Does d&d beyond ever have sales on players handbook or Tashas or any other books?
yes, sales happen.
Ah, thank you. I'll wait for a sale then
Sales often happen on holidays and are usually for all books
Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knows how to switch around subclass spells they are given such as a clockwork soul sorcerer's "Protection from Evil and Good".
that feature is not currently natively supported due to limitations on how the character sheet works
The current best workaround is to make a copy of the subclass using the homebrew tools, then edit the spells
Alright, noted and thanks.
No worries, the team is aware of this limitation and it is on their radar
Is there an ETA on when this will be fixed?
First time player here, where would I be able to get a run down of like rules and how to play?
Thnx
This is just basic stuff though; I'm not sure for more advance
@orchid siren No eta, D&D Beyond generally does not do etas/timelines. Sorry
@crude musk Can a homebrew class be improved, so lets say another dndbeyond user has created the version with the added spells we can access/copy his homebrew?
You can't modify someone elses homebrew, no
Also these are good questions for #ddb-support
Thanks
you can just remake it with your changes
Have it in one tab, open another tab for creating, copypaste
Yeah I figured that out, but its a massive time sink if you don't own the class (IE you have access from the DM). But working on it, kinda surprised this has been in the works for such a long time.
As I said in #dnd-discussion, checked the pinned messages of this channel including the Basic Rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
question, if i actually own the rulebooks, is there no way to have them in DND beyond? and if i buy the books in beyond, do i have them in pdf format and do i own them ?
so there is no reason to buy me stuff on beyond if i don't own it and it costs the same as the books in physical form
And no, you don't own them. As with all digital content, you're buying a license to access them
There’s also plenty of reason to buy them on Beyond. The character builder and encounter builder come to mind.
I can't comment on reason to buy anything on D&D Beyond, that comes down to you and what conveniences the service may provide.
However, D&D Beyond offers the books at 40% below MSRP
You’re paying for license to access content and for a service. And the convenience of not having to lug books around.
i see rulebooks and sourcebooks for same price
That would depend on how retailers choose to price them. I can only comment on the MSRP Wizards of the Coast suggests
If you’d like to see how the books work on DDB, you can check out the free Basic Rules to get a feel for it:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
just bought my first dnd set!!
Localisation is something D&D Beyond has looked into, but it also relies on Wizards of the Coast producing localised versions that D&D Beyond can distribute
Wizards are now handling the localisation in house, and with D&D Beyond also under Wizards umbrella, the changes are higher than they used to be, but still not a guarantee
I have a question about Wizard spells. I understand spell slots and prepared spells for the day. At 4th level I have 4-1st level and 3-2nd level but what I struggle to understand is how many spells I'm allowed to have written under the 1st and 2nd level lines on my spell sheet.
You can have any mix of 1st- and 2nd-level spells you want, just remember you can only use a spell slot at least as high as the spell's level to cast it, so if you prepare all 2nd-level spells that day, you won't be able to use your 1st-level spell slots.
so you can't cast a first level spell using a second level spell slot?
i know that sounds redundant but i am genuinely asking
~~y-~~no
to cast a spell of Xth level, you need to expend a slot of Xth level or higher. Many spells have listed benefits for being cast with a higher level slot, most commonly more damage.
If a spell doesn't have a listed benefit, upcasting does nothing but make the spell be at that level - something to take note of for Dispel Magic, Counterspell, and even a Rakshasa.
WAIt no
No, you definitely can cast a 1st-level spell with a 2nd-level slot.
It's the reverse that doesn't work.
The book says to imagine them like spoons.
You can drop a spell into a bigger spoon.
wait, really?
But not into a smaller one or you'll spill.
Oh, I got the wrong double-o word there. 🤣
You can think of a spell slot as a groove of a certain size — small for a 1st-level slot, larger for a spell of higher level. A 1st-level spell fits into a slot of any size, but a 9th-level spell fits only in a 9th-level slot.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#SpellSlots
spoons work fine as a comparison
Hallo! I just found DnD Beyond a few days ago and have now just found this
and sorcerers are spoon benders
Big spoon, little spoon
What did I just walk into
upcasting rules and comparisons to other things
Anyway, a lot of spells (but not all of them) give you an added benefit for using a larger spell slot.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#CastingaSpellataHigherLevel
But regardless of whether a spell gives that extra benefit or not, you can always cast it using a larger slot.
(Provided you have a larger slot to spend.)
and an important thing to note is
1: Every spell can be cast with higher level slots.
2: When you cast a spell with an Xth level slot, the spell is Xth level. For example, if you cast Fireball at 5th level, if someone were to Counterspell it, they'd need to cast Counterspell at 5th level or gamble on a DC 15 check. (Counterspell details the rule interaction for what level it can cancel, and the DC for anything of a higher level than the counterspell itself)
Wizards are limited only by the total number of spells they can prepare. How you allocate that for each spell level is up to you.
You prepare the list of wizard spells that are available for you to cast. To do so, choose a number of wizard spells from your spellbook equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#Spellcasting-410
Thank you
its basically just "how easy do i want character creation to be for my players"
if you want to spoon feed the content to them so they dont have to think: Dndbeyond
if you think theyre capable of reading from a book and creating sheets: physical
I am looking to build a broken paladin of conquest I am a newer player, so how do? I heard from my DM and another that there is the Smite Build (Damage), Be Extra Tanky, or a middle of both? I was wondering if high AC was a possibility? I am not sure if this is the place for a question like this.
If you want more character advice, #character-discussion is a great place to visit.

What are the odds on someone helping me make a level 3 warlock I thought i could do I but the way their spell slots work are confusing me
I can @opal warren
Im in a vc running some combat encounters to test monster replacements with my players but we can all help you
Basically the TLDR of warlocks
their spell slots work differently to all of the other magic users in the game
they get a smaller amount of spell slots, they are all of the same level, but you get them back on a short rest rather than a long rest
the even smaller tldr: just use eldritch blast
Just a heads up for Prime Members and those who do not have dungeons master guide, player handbook and monsters guide. Check as heck rn got all three free shipping $70
So how does their patron spell bonuses work then
just ordered books today
So, as a 3rd level warlock, you have 2 spell slots, and they are both 2nd level
also is this chat for new players?
Im just gonna shoot you straight im trying to make a warlock that smites better than a paladin
Yeah
So
you're never gonna be able to out-smite a paladin, but hexblade warlocks are rather good in their own right
Hexblade pact of the blade
Im gonna try it though
I saw a tiktok that inspired me to do this
yes you have your smite spells,
but paladin with their inbuilt smites most often deal more damage
but do you understand how the warlock spell slots work now that i TLDR'd it?
Hexblade pact of the blade, improved pact weapon, eldritch smite, thirsting blade
Yeah i think so
So in theory i can smite with a ranged weapon
with eldritch smite, yes
with the smite spells no
The smite spells require a melee attack
Eldritch smite just requires you to attack with your pact weapon
A smites a smite to me
Welll yes but actually no
The smite spells have extra effects tagged on to them
while eldritch smite is just damage
Doesn't eldritch smite have a little extra too?
eldritch smite is 1d8 damage base, plus 1d8 for each level of the spellslot used
Even though tbh i have no idea what prone actually does cuz ive never seen it have an affect in a campaign
It says it knocks huge and smaller prone
wrathful smite for example does 1d6 damage, and forces the enemy to make a save or be frightened
Prone
A prone creature’s only Movement option is to crawl, unless it stands up and thereby ends the condition.
The creature has disadvantage on Attack rolls.
An Attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature. Otherwise, the Attack roll has disadvantage.
Oh, hm
That sounds like it does a lot less than being prone in a combat situation would actually cause for you
you have disadvantage to hit things, and things have advantage on hitting you
thats pretty bad
it might not be much technically
but that is a huge effect
I dont get why they don't have to spend their turn to get up especially if they have heavy armor on
i mean if it was, that would basically be the same as stunning them
which would be very brutal
Generally losing half your movement is pretty debilitating already
and if you're planning on eldritch smiting from range you're basically halving an enemies move speed
Oh that didn't mention the movement speed thing
Yeah id say that's pretty fair then i didn't think there was any negative consequences for standing up
yeah there's a pretty cheesy build
Hexblade Warlock + Conquest Paladin
you knock someone prone, then you somehow make them frightened... and since they are frightened of you their move speed drops to 0 (Conquest pally ability) so they can't do anything really
Im kinda stuck between this funky little warlock idea and just playing a drakewarden ranger
Apparently being an elven samurai is a way to make the ranged smite even more powerful for extra accuracy or something
I dunno thats my friends idea
i saw p i n g
Conquest pally -
Starting at 7th level, you constantly emanate a menacing aura while you’re not incapacitated. The aura extends 10 feet from you in every direction, but not through total cover.
If a creature is frightened of you, its speed is reduced to 0 while in the aura, and that creature takes psychic damage equal to half your paladin level if it starts its turn there.
At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.
What is the difference between this page and the DND Rules page?
This channel is for newcomers to D&D to help get them started without having their questions lost in normal channel chatter.
#dnd-rules is for more in-depth D&D rules discussions.
should i let the paladin go in first if im the rogue even though i can sneak in?
i mean
right now im in a cave fighting 2 minotaurs but for future reference
make them the meat shied lol
haha thank you for this (im a very HIGHLY racist high elf 😉 )
lamo
towards humans heads up
in my campaign i some how be came a demigod lol
Can someone explain the dice notation to me?
What do you need explained
XdY+Z
X is the amount of dice you roll
Y is the amount of sides the dice has
Z is the static bonus you add
Ohh
d is just sort for dice, and its followed by which dice you roll (how many sides it has)
Thank you
so 2d6+5 means roll 2 six-sided dice, then add 5 to the total
In these rules, the different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
Welcome

Hello, I'm a new player, just started looking into it today

hello new to dnd
What's a 1 shot?
A one shot is an adventure that is completed in a single play session, as apposed to a campaign, which is an adventure that takes place over multiple sessions
content made by players, rather than Wizards of the Coast or other companies
Thanks
homebrew is excellent fun to do and can be a great way to expand how your players enjoy the game!
Whats rivals of waterdeep?
It’s a D&D livestream/VoD of a group playing D&D
Ok, thank you!
Anyone wanna help out a coupke new dnders we have just two willing to join another group
hey any dms that are willing take take on a newbie?
You can post in #750812887697588356 if you want people to know you’re looking. Just make sure to use the post template in the pinned messages there. (Anything not using the template gets removed.)
Ok thank you
Alternatively, you can check out #looking-for-players to see what games are available. If you find one you like, you can message the user privately to ask about joining.
Hi, I'm getting ready to DM for my first time. I'm using Roll20 and don't really want to use the music they have. I know there has to be a way to download songs but I don't know what that is.
In the side bar on the right you can click the music tab and upload or link songs to a playlist, although I think you may have to be subscribed to do it
hello, i'm very new to dnd! i'm trying to learn to play because my friend explained the concept of the game and it sounded like a blast :))
Welcome! If you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask!
Hi! im new here looking for a group to play with. I have very basic knowledge of the game and wanting to dive into more
thank you!! :))
Hey! So, I would like to play via mobile…there’s these adventure books. Is that where I play? Or does it have to be with online players?
Dungeons and Dragons is designed for around 5 or 6 players, with one being a Dungeon Master, leading to 1 DM and 4 or 5 player characters.
So the hit/dc next to a weapons name is how much ac damage it will do right? And the 1d6+2 means I roll a one 6 sided dice for damage and add 2 right?
no, not 'ac damage', damage goes to hit points. An attack hits or misses, and damages the target if it hits. The 'to hit' is what you add to your attack roll against the targets AC.
And 1d6+2 does mean a 6 sided die, plus 2.
I've seen it a few a times and i think i get the gist of it but what exactly does ac mean
Ok thank you
I thought it was armor just had no idea what the c was
Hello all! me and a friend have been trying really hard to get into dnd but we dont know anyone to play with, we are slowly been getting to grips with the basic rules but videos i have been watching tell me its better to join a group thats willing to help me along the way
Welcome. You can have a look in #looking-for-players and see if any of the DMs who posted there are looking for new players and fit the vibe you and your friend are after.
Also can try posting in #750812887697588356 and see if a DM contacts you :)
Thank you!
can anyone help me with my background I don't know what to write (first character - a fighter elf)
We actually have #character-discussion for that very thing
oh thanks
How do u play with others? I mean, there’s a section on the bottom that says Campaigns’your adventure will start soon’. Is this an online thing? Like connecting to an invite or whatnot?
You get with a group of others who want to play D&D. One person takes on the role of Dungeon Master - they are like a stage manager and rules judge. The rest take on the role of characters who will play an active part in the story.
DnDBeyond provides tools (digital character sheets, D&D books in web-available format, Avrae Discord bot, Encounter and Combat tracker, campaign section with shared dice log, etc.) to help people play D&D but at the end of the day all D&D needs is players, DM, character sheets, dice, and rules references (rules books, settings books, adventure books).

Thank you so much 🙏🏽
Also be patient - finding a group usually takes time because of real life schedules, personalities, and desired play style.
This article also has some helpful advice if you’re looking to play online.

But at the end of the day, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
So any way you can talk to each other should do do the job.
If I'm fighting a monster with 17ac do i roll to see if i break thw armor and then use my quarterstaff which does +4hit and 1d6+2 to determine damage?
You don’t “break” the armor.
Yes, you roll a d20, add +4 to hit and compare it against the monsters AC. If the number is greater than or equal to AC, you hit the monster and can roll for damage
Ah so roll a d20 add 4 to it then If I roll higher then the ac i roll a one 6 sided die to determine damage and add 2?
Exactly!
Hey uh, I’ve got my first in person campaign in about a week I’m still relatively new so just curious to ask.
What’s the best way to prepare and is there anything I should bring?
Are you a player or a DM?
Player
Ok so for what to bring, I'd say you need your a character sheet (digital or paper), dice, and thats about it. It would probably be good to have the sourcebooks you used to make your character, so you can directly reference the source wording if a ruling question comes up, but DMs will often have the books themselves as well.
For prep, just focus on making your character, and feeling comfortable roleplaying as them. A lot of beginners put a little bit too much emphasis on backstory, but the purpose of backstory is to inform how you are going forward, so that is the most important thing to focus on.
Would digital dice work provided the other players dont abuse it
So just aslong as it is equal or greater
Digital dice are a very popular tool in the hobby. And players can abuse physical dice just as easily as digital
I'm not sure what you mean by "abuse it" but digital dice are fairly common, yeah
Yep!
When you make an attack, your attack roll determines whether the attack hits or misses. To make an attack roll, roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifiers. If the total of the roll plus modifiers equals or exceeds the target's Armor Class (AC), the attack hits.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
Fair point im just looking to get into d and d but i dont have the physical dice yet
Hell i dont even got a game store in the same county as me
I think dice will be given as this is meant for new people
Getting my partner to print off a couple sheets
What do you mean by this?
The event itself is meant for people to get into dnd
What event?
Oh sorry I thought i mentioned, place near me called settlers is hosting a open rpg day to get people into the game
It looks pretty good, a lot of options and it lasts the whole day
They are referring to their own situation, not Tristan's. They made a post a little bit ago saying their first session is coming up soon
Ah, okay
Hey, what's the best thing to start with the D&D knowledge?
the basic rules, which you can find pinned in this channel
Oh yeah i see, thx
Ngl i still need to touch up a charecter sheet but if i can find a dm i wanna run what i have through them first and change stuff before i finish the sheet
Honestly, that's a good way to do it.
Go in with a few general possibilities, then work with the DM to nail down the specifics.
Do i need the players handbook to play or am i good with just basics
Hi, I've been wanting to get into D&D for a little while now and I'm just wondering how. I have a D&D Beyond account and character, now what?
@heady cliff The basics are all you need to get started
The Player's Handbook does give you more options, but you don't need those to start playing
So you can start d and d for free basically

both him and i have already posted there
Thanks for all the help guys hopefully ill find a game soon
thats the biggest challenge....i might not remember much but finding groups was a pain
It's just a matter of patience
Do I need to learn anything or can I just jump right in with a character and learn it as I go along
It's best to check out the basic rules, specifically the sections on using ability scores and combat
That covers all the key points
Also don't expect to be able to jump in with a character, you may need to remake your character to fit what the DM is running
true but some DMs for what i remember are something i cant say here
I'm not sure what you're trying to get at, but it doesn't seem helpful
i was trying to say that some DMs arent nice people if u catch my drift...the remembering part its because i was put intro a small coma duo to a game session...i dont remember much stuff from my life specially D&D...i remember how i end up in a coma which is ironic
That's not really conducive to a newcomers chat
Yes, there are bad actors in this hobby, as there are in every hobby, as there are in general when interacting with people
It's not something that should be of concern to a newcomer
i mean in a way im a newcomer...kinda....i just dont want him to be upset for finding a bad DM...i mean i remember D&D being super fun specially the way i end up in a coma XD
Wait what do you have to do as dungeon master? Just like tell a story and say what your dice rolls do?
Again, not conducive to a newcomer channel because it's not something that's worth any major concern
The DM is like the game engine; they run the non-player characters and enemy monsters, they decide what abilities are needed in what circumstances etc
They can guide the story as much or as little as the style of campaign dictates
They're a player in the game, just like everyone else, their role is just different
I guess you need a good knowledge of the game for it
Not at all
You can pick it up as you go
Lost Mine of Phandelver has a good section that describes the role of the DM:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop/introduction#TheDungeonMaster
Hey I'm new to all of this his dnd stuff and would like to join a group I would be comfortable being a new player and not being made fun of where can I ask or will anyone take me under there wing as a newbie

Is there a way to make an artificer-Warlock multi class for free in dnd beyond, or anywhere else?
Cuz I really don’t wanna spend 30 bucks on a book
The only way to access artificer is by purchasing any artificer subclass.
You can get just the subclass if you don’t want the full book.
Artificer is not a class that is included in the free basic rules, so you would need to make at least 1 purchase to be able to use that. However, if you don't want to buy the whole book, DDB has the option to buy individual content from each book, for a cheaper price. And when you do, it gets applied as a discount towards the price of the full book if you ever want to buy the whole thing
And whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too.
You can find them here: alchemist, armorer, artillerist, or battle smith.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/tashas-cauldron-of-everything
DDB also has a content sharing option. If you are in a campaign, and someone in that campaign has a master tier subscription, the players are able to share content their purchased content with each other for free, for use in that campaign.
Hi. Im new to 5e. Halp me.
I have discovered there are two playable versions of the satyr in 5e (one from mot and one from mpmm) and im just wondering which one is better for a wizard. And why. Im new to 5e.
Monster of the Multiverse is considered to be the current version of the race. The version in Odyssey of Theros is "Legacy" content now, meaning its outdated. Of course, its still up to your DM to decide what is or is not allowed at their table, but its probably fairly common for most DMs to require you to use the updated version
hey im new to being a dm. i already played a session as a dm but i still struggle with planning and stuff. does anyone know where i can find tips for that?
Check out the #dm-discussion channel. Visit #880965682462875679 to select the correct role to see the channel.
I use to play D&D but i have not played in a very long time
Hi! im very new to dnd and literally just made my character sheet! where do I start?
Check out the #looking-for-players or #750812887697588356 to see if any games are looking for new people. I also have been reading and listening to podcasts to learn too
Ok!!
Does anyone know a good race/class for my first character? I want to have a character that is easier to keep track of, so I don’t think wizard/warlock is a good idea with the dozens of spells.
class fighter or barb for race basically any really
Ok
Honestly there's not really a tutorial class.
I just say, look out for...
Wizard. Wizard puts spells in their book, and prepares a list of spells from the spells in their book. (Meaning they have those prepared spells to cast)
Rogue sneak attack. If an enemy of the target is adjacent and not incapacitated, you can sneak attack. Also, advantage is flat yes for sneak attack.
Any should be viable, but I see new players get tripped up on those two.
Hey whatvare playstyles? i don't even know what they are and i'm still new to dnd but an ex friend used it against me knowing i know nothing about stuff like playstyles and storytelling regarding dnd
play style refers to how you like to play the game and what parts interest you the most
Broadly speaking there are three core aspects of the game (often known as 'pillars')
- Combat
- Exploration
- Social Interaction (often referred to as Roleplay, but you can roleplay as part of the above two)
You can also just describe your playstyle however you think best conveys what you're looking for in a game
See i was just doing what they were all doing which was heavy exploration and social interaction with combat thrown in.
I love all aspects of the three and honestly want something more balanced than what i have experienced in the past. I think a big part of my style would be including roleplay and verbal storytelling throughout. Like just going more in depth regarding my character and whats going on as opposed to just 'gonna go here and do that'
You don't have to define your style, it's just more useful for DMs who either state what style their game is for prospective players, or when looking at player applications
I will say, D&D being a cooperative game, the core expectation should be doing things that the party can do as a group. This is why games may lean towards "gonna go here and do that"
While character exposition may be great for the player whose character it is, it's generally not to conducive to a shared table experience
Oh okay. Im bad at describing this but generally exposition is used in group sessions during character downtime? I just kinda meant that i like to spice up how i say 'gonna go here do that' if that makes sense?
Myself and two friends are looking to start playing how do we find a game and a DM?

i dont know how to play any help??
We've got a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages here that'll get you started.
But did you have any specific questions?
no. i have never played this before and i want a guide or something.
any full on guides?
As mentioned, there are some useful links pinned in this channel
im so confused, i wish ghere was just a video on how to play.
There are, the pinned links include some videos introducing you to D&D
i mean a gameplay walkthrough
An official digital toolset for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition.
listen to a dnd podcast?
"gameplay"
there is no gameplay i need clearance
"write down ur spells" what spells?
i only made a account
nothing else
Read the basic rules
Are you struggling with using D&D Beyond?
yes
That's different from not knowing how to play the game
idk how to play at all, i only created a account
The rules won't tell you how to use DDB
i have never played it before
Ah, okay, let's clear things up
D&D is the game
D&D Beyond is a toolset for playing the game
a podcast is actually a great example of what D&D gameplay might look like. Im partial to Dusk by Matthew Colville, Dimension 20's Adventuring Academy, and Critical Role Campaign 2: The Might Nein.
I'll take a jab at describing it.
DND is a tabletop roleplaying game. There's no set rigid path, no start button, it's a game ran by people.
You, a player, would have a character. Name, backstory, and their race, game statistics (like how strong, agile, tough, smart, wise, charismatic), and their class.
DM describes a scene, what's going on, what your character notices and knows. When you want to do a thing, your character sheet details what special things you can do. For example, a Wizard could cast spells, and a Rogue would be good at many skills.
all of which are wildly different game experiences.
oh
dayum i guess the game just aint for me
You'd only need to write down what spells you have if your class lets you use spells.
my memory isnt great so id not know how to play even if i watched a tutorial
You don't need a great memory, people play with the rulebooks at the table and reference them during play
There's plenty of beginner-friendly games out there that'll help you learn as you play, too.
yeah but i dont have the game in real life
honestly, memory isnt the most essential aspect of play, especially if you have the information in front of you or write down what might be important information to reference later.
and have never played it
I linked you to the digital version of the free rules
You'd be surprised at how much you begin to internalize.
But as a player, you only need to have access to information relevant to you. You'd only need to care about rules relevant to you, not every rule for every character and every behind-the-scenes tool tidbit the DM has.
And if you don't want to worry about memorizing spells, you don't even have to play a spellcaster.
and in the unlikely event that you do not begin to internalize information relevant to the game, you have the other players/DM(s) at the table to bounce off of for their knowledge.
If you're a Fighter, you only need to worry about... How to attack, and whatever race you are. Then, stuff like what a subclass gives.
one of the blessings about this game is that the rules are all written down somewhere and theyre pretty easy to find via a book's respective table of contents.
oke i understand it a lil now
but when i have created a character how do i see my spells?
things you need to play:
- the basic rules, which are free as PDF or on dnd beyond
- a character sheet, which dnd beyond can generate for you for free or you can get as a PDF to print out and fill yourself. for free
- dice, which can be bought for money but there are free apps to roll them as well.
- people to play with, either your friends, people at a local game store or strangers on the internet
well that first assumes that you even have spells, some builds do not include spells in their abilities. and second, theyd be written on your character sheet.
oke but how do you play? in comments?
there's many ways, but the most classic online way seems to be some kind of voice chat and some kind of virtual tabletop.
Play by Post exists (just text channel, people roleplay in text messages, it goes on and on in a more drawn out slow form)
the classic way to play is a bunch of people sitting around a table, but with voice chat, you can play over the internet and with chat rooms, its also possible to play by text, though that is a bit more challenging
the way i play is i set up a personal discord server and talk in its' voice chat.
Some others play using online tools (such as D&DBeyond or Roll20, two websites)
Some others play in-person games, usually in one of the players homes.
Some others set up their own forum (usually a private discord server/private subreddit) and talk via text and play whenever they have the free time.
wait before i go, is there any d&d versions i should buy in real life?
becouse me and my brothers girlfriend wanna play this badly
like a kit with everything u need
5e is the current version. you might wanna buy the player's handbook but you can also just print out the basic rules or send them the link
there are two starter packs for beginners
wich one do u reccomend?
the older starter set with the adventure "lost Mine of phandelver" and the newer essentials kit with the adventure "dragon on icespire peak"
hmm, I like the essentials kit more but lost mine is more straightforward
I would personally recommend Lost Mine of Phandelver, it is more straightforward and thus easier for new players and DMs
hello!!!! I am new to DND Beyond and looking for a game online (I use mostly discord)
essentials kit does have a quest board and is more modular, so it might help people who come from a video game mindeset to adjust easier
I do have to work today so

Lost Mines of Phandelver is free iirc
i want the board game
i think Essentials kit is the better value personally
ye but ive never played befor ive never even touched dnd
you get more help for character creation and it has a lot of extras to help the dungeon master
it is meant for beginners
hmm oke its a board game irl?
sort of
??
Not like traditional board games, no.
it has board game elements but you can play it just with your character sheets and dice
everything else can happen in your heads
maps, miniatures/tokens etc are all optional
i mean like its a board game just something u can play irl and u dont need a pc for?
there's a similarity yet a difference. It's a tabletop game, be it an actual table, or a virtual one, or just people meeting in a voice chat and using a screenshared microsoft paint as a makeshift battle map.
its like a board game in that sense, yes
It's a roleplaying game, all you need to play are the rules, some dice, and a way to communicate with each other
oke so the name of the kit is?
You can play in person, over discord, over skype or teams, even over the phone
essentials kit
oke

Hey! I recently decided that I wanted to learn how to play D&D, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the basics, maybe give me some tips/advice? Anything is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!
I have a question, I'm a new player so forgive me if its dumb but I'm not sure if DnD beyond pre-adds the proficiency bonus to weapons
for example, I'm proficient in my shortsword, but I'm not sure if when I roll and DnD beyond does the roll + number, the number added is part of the proficiency bonus. Do I have to add it myself?
DnD beyond does add your proficiencies and most other bonuses to your attack rolls
just click on the number beside the weapon when you are attacking
Same here, and looking for people to play with
When you're the dm and there's an npc like a shepard but they are in a small battle, how do I know what to put as their stats if it's not already listed?
Like a commoner? They have a flat 10 for all stats normally.
Ah ty!
I just had my first One Shot, and it was really fun! Very confusing at first and kind of intimating but in the end really fun!
Here's the full Commoner statblock to follow up on DyingNoob - They do have flat 10's, but you can give them racial traits such as perception from an elf.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16829-commoner
Thanks so much, really appreciate it!
I'm kind of unclear how items work, like lets say I have an adventuring rope, can i tie it around an orcs feet and run away if I get a high roll??
if the DM allows you to try, sure, why not?
Is there any clear rules to this game?? Or can you do anything the dm lets you??
most of the rules are really clear.
But others, like the usage of certain items, are there to reward player creativity.
I see
You can try to do pretty much anything, but the DM will likely make you roll to see if you succeed. For example, if you're trying to sneak up on an orc and tie a rope around their feet, you'll likely need to roll a Stealth check to see if you can sneak up on them, and then probably either a Sleight Of Hand or a general Dexterity check to see if you can tie the rope without attracting attention. If you fail, the orc will likely notice you and then your next roll will be for Initiative because a fight's about to start 🙂
Can someone recommend me a good physical character sheet I can print off?
@wheat beacon There's no need to ask the same question in multiple channels
I like the ravenloft one but theres a section you wont need. So maybe the Icewind dale one
yooo im new to dnd and i think its going to be fun
Hi I' new and i would like to know how to get started
I have never played before
and i want to start
whaddup fellow new players lets get this bread
Does Elemental Adept (Fire) works on Green Flame Blade ?
I dont see why not, makes sense and wouldn't be game breaking or anything like that IMO
I can't think of any reason why it would be exempt from the feat. I believe the benefits of the feat would only apply to the fire damage to the original and secondary targets, not the damage from the weapon attack. Even if you were attacking with a Flametongue sword that did fire damage, the spell isn't doing that fire damage.
Yo like Ive been wanting to play dnd for a while now, I just downloaded dnd beyond on my phone and somewhat made a character. Now PLEASE can someone explain to me how this all works?
It's still fire damage, it's a spell. Works perfectly fine for both ignoring resistance and treating rolled 1s as 2s when you start rolling dice on it.
Things do what they say, and nothing contradicts in that interaction

Hi, I’ve never played dnd before but I really want to start. I would love to be able to join a group that could teach me the ways.
Use the #looking-for channels to find a group.
I also recommend checking out the pinned messages here on the channel - lots of useful links to help get you started.
