You can select a background from the dropdown there, or select Custom Background if you want to create your own.
You can learn more about backgrounds here:

whats the difference between a human and a variant human?
They get different ability score modifiers and variant human gets a feat
and may i ask which one is better?
Better is subjective, it depends what you prefer, if your DM is using feats, what you're planning on playing as
I prefer basic human, a lot of people prefer variant
thanks
is there anybody who can bring me closer to dnd in person?
I don't understand your question
well i created a character with random stats because i dont know anything
also there are some things which confuse me a lot
If you have any direct questions, feel free to ask and I'd be happy to answer.
Have you read the free Basic Rules?
so thats the first question: whats that with the bought and free stuff. Arent you supposed to play specific things if you havent buy it? Because in general you can do whatever you want in dnd, well thats waht i thoughtr
in order to determine your stats you need to roll 4 d6 and choose the 3 highest scores
D&D is still a product, it's not just freeform roleplay
It's a specific set of rules that you wrap roleplay around, and while the core rules you need to play are free, a lot of the rules that expand play, including more options to pick from, are not
then you just add the numbers and boom, you have your first stat score
and you do that 5 more times
after you've done it 6 times in total
you choose in which stat you want to put that score
The rules are a bit complicated
I'm new as well
You can read more about determining ability scores here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
I've only played two times
But honestly, until you’ve found a DM to play with, I’d suggest using Standard Array or Point Buy instead of rolling, for now.
and I still don't know all of the rules...
I don't like the point store method at all
A lot of times DMs have their own specific rules for determining ability scores, so anything you roll now may not be allowed at their table.
ik
most DMs will actually not allow people to roll stats at all. Point Buy is what most people use, in my experience
Potentially for reasons as simple as them wanting to see your rolls in-person.
I do prefer point buy in my own games, tbh.
I'll be the DM for my first session with my friends
I'd avoid declaring anything as 'the standard' or not allowed, at least in this channel
Bcuz none of them knows the rules
Being newcomer-focused, it's a good idea to avoid imparting preconceptions or assumptions
Best advice was already given by Swamp; speak to your DM (once you find one) about what stat generation method they use
completely fair
If you're looking to practice making characters, I'd say standard array is the easiest to understand
Your proficiency bonus is based solely on your character level.
This ^ EX: rolling is listed first in the options for generating stats in the PHB, by some definitions that would be the "standard". (Personally I see more rolling with in person games and more arrays with online as a fun little anecdote)
so
At level one, your proficiency bonus is +2.
No, I think it’s every four levels.
It will show in your class table when that value changes.
oh
Or in this table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
what about passive wisdom ?
Passive ability checks are calculated as 10 + whatever modifiers normally apply when you roll that check.
When and where they get used is entirely up to the DM. It’s not something players generally choose to use.
oh
It’s often used if the DM wants to keep information hidden (passive perception to notice the ambush ahead), or to represent repeated attempts at a task over time.
You can read more about passive checks here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#PassiveChecks
one last thing
I have the starter set
and in the already created characters that it gives you
in some skills
the circle is black
what does that mean ?
That’s meant to indicate they’re proficient with that skill.
how do you determine that ?
So if they roll an applicable ability check, they’ll add their proficiency bonus to the roll, in addition to the ability score modifier.
The rules for a character will tell them when they can choose a skill proficiency (and which ones they can choose from).
Those typically come from the class, race, and background.
oh ok
And a character typically starts with 4-6 of them.
so I have to look in the rules in order to determine that
Backgrounds are an easy example:
Each background gives a character proficiency in two skills.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Proficiencies
ok tysm
Yes. Each race, class and background gives some profiency choices
Some backgrounds give you specific skills, like Criminal:
Skill Proficiencies: Deception, Stealth
OH
thank you guys
I'm gonna be the DM in my session so I want to know as much as I can
Others give you a choice.
It'll be my first time
If you’re creating your characters on D&D Beyond, it’ll help identify when you can choose a skill, and what options are available.
And automatically calculate the appropriate bonus for that skill.
kk
The campaign is "The Lost Mine of Phandelver" if you're curious
That’s a good one for first-time DMs.
oh I didn't know that lol
Inspiration is definitely something you can introduce later, if you want one less thing to worry about up-front.
But it’s basically a simple reward you can give to players in the moment, if they do something clever or really commit to their roleplaying or make the whole table laugh. When and how you give it is entirely up to you.
Inspiration is basically "I think you're roleplaying your character well." and it's basically an advantage token.
Then the player that has it can spend it to get advantage on a roll.
(But they either have inspiration or they don’t; they can’t stockpile them.)
You can read more about inspiration here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Inspiration
I personally see them as something to incentivize and reward the act of not metagaming. For example, the barbarian who's never read a book probably doesn't know this black dust is very explosive. If the player acts using only their characters knowledge, even (or especially, if you want) to their detriment, that's their characters knowledge.
Another example is the lingering injuries table from the DMG. There's mechanical effects listed...
But you can also just not actually prescribe anything for their missing eye or their limp. You can choose to not use the effects, literally only describing them and saying "this is a thing for you to roleplay with".
So that, when the player has that injury act up, like falling behind and limping as they try to run out of a collapsing cave, that's a good opportunity to give them inspiration.
(as well as "that was funny" or whatnot, just like spamandtuna detailed)
hello everyone, quick question when i try to change my warlock spells
i dont see eldritch spear is there a reason for that
that's not a spell. Eldritch Spear is an Eldritch Invocation.
how does that work
At 2nd level, you gain two eldritch invocations of your choice. Your invocation options are detailed at the end of the class description. When you gain certain warlock levels, you gain additional invocations of your choice, as shown in the Invocations Known column of the Warlock table.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#EldritchInvocations-388
Warlocks have Eldritch Invocations, which is for the most part their main class features. Think of them like perks you pick. You can switch 1 out each level up (in the words of the rules) and you eventually get more and more of them at the same time.
A Warlock gains the Eldritch Invocation feature at 2nd level. The Warlock table tells you how many invocations you know at each Warlock level. To take an Eldritch Invocation, you must meet any prerequisites - something that says 5th level will need you to be a level 5 warlock to take it. Otherwise, invocations with no requisite, such as Eldritch Sight, are easy to take.
Eldritch Spear specifically is one that modifies an actual spell: Eldritch Blast.
Eldritch Blast is the spell (a cantrip, free infinite use spell - all cantrips are spells, but not all spells are cantrips), and has a 120 foot range
Eldritch Spear says "you can shoot that blast up to 300 feet away"
@topaz garnet so when i attack
Let's say you cast Eldritch Blast.
you can shoot something up to 120 feet away. That's the range of the spell.
Or, if you have the Eldritch Spear invocation, you can shoot something up to 300 feet away.
what specifically is "it"
eldritch spear
yes, and it says that when you cast Eldritch Blast, its range is 300 feet.
so lets say you are DM and i tell him I do eldrictch blast
it already has the properties of spear
you have eldritch blast, you cast eldritch blast
you have the eldritch spear invocation, the range is 300 feet
ok how would i tell my dm i want to do that
it's not any kind of extra activation, it's just a passive perk.
You cast eldritch blast. Lets say you try to target something 250 feet away. Your DM might go "eldritch blast has a range of 120 feet" but then you remind them you have Eldritch Spear, which makes the range 300 feet when you cast it.
is just something that my edlritch blast comes with
The normal distance for Eldritch Blast is 120 feet, meaning you normally can’t use it to attack anyone farther than that.
thanks, i love the help
Is there any other places aside from here and Roll20 to find games? I'm still struggling to find any
there is a website called startplaying.games, which makes it very easy to find a game, but they primarily operate with pay-to-play games. I use it for oneshots every once in a while, but I don't mind dropping a few bucks for something high quality. If you want free games, I believe there is a decent LFG subreddit as well, but I don't know what its called
Alright i'll go to that sub, thank you so much
Is there any site that offers free games? I cant see my self paying for a game when I am literally just trying to try the game out to see if I am even going to like it.

hello! I'm new to D&D and have never really played. I have been messing around in D&D beyond, creating characters, and learning the basics, and now I think I'm ready to play! Any tips for joining campaigns or getting started up?
theres simple guides in D&D beyond if you wanna check them out
no problem!
Just saying a little hello and thank you for the ability to check out this server~ I’ll be nosing around and reading, I really am just a laid back and friendly person who doesn’t mind meeting people ❤️ I’m not new to D&D, but very new to the digital aspects. Hope everyone is having a nice day~

how do you add friends on dbd beyond so you can share content?
You’ll need to invite them to a campaign first. Once you create it, you’ll find an invite link at the top of the campaign page.
Then someone in the group with a Master Tier subscription needs to enable Content Sharing for that campaign.
Once it’s enabled, everyone’s purchased game content gets shared with the whole group.
What VTT do you use?
@lyric fjord
What is that
VTT= Virtual Table Top ie. Roll 20
So text based games?
OK
Quick question: Do classes still have attribute score requirements? (14 dex, 12 str, ..)
only for multiclassing
otherwise, they're 'soft requirements' for being useful.
For example, a Wizard uses Intelligence for their spells.
Not if that's your only class. If you choose to multiclass(taking levels in more than one class as you progress), you must meet the minimum abilty score requirements for ALL classes you have levels in. Basiclaly you'll need a 13 in the key stats for each class. The specifics are in Chapter 6 of the Players Handbook & Basic Rules.
Great. Thank you.
What ability scores are needed to make a semi-competent battle master fighter?
Strength (or Dexterity depending on if you want to use finesse weapons) and Constitution would be the two I would try to get high
For battle master I usually use dex and con
Hi, I'm new to D&D in general and I am curious on how this plays out. I don't want to get too involved by buying a bunch of D&D books and other stuff. I'm just wanting to do something for a pass time and to learn more about this.

Hello fine people, I am a beginner to DnD, i have played before but still very green, i used to play more Call of cthulhu back in the day, but mostly as a GM.
I thought id try out playing more DnD, and also just being a player for once.
Im not sure how to go about doing that but hopefully if there are any spots available for any upcoming one shots or campaigns, im down to play if anyone will have me 🙂
Hello Everyone, I want to ask about running a easy campaign for new players
i wanted to go with icespire peak or mines oif phandelver
hey guys, i was just wondering what the dm needs to do to prepare for a campaign. my group is gonna used a pre built campaign but idk if there is anything i need to do before we start?
There’s a good article here with tips for first-time DMs:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
And a bunch more here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/dungeon-master-tips
Either are good.
Lost Mine is more linear, Icespire peak gives players more choices.
Mat be continue in #dm-discussion or #adventures-spoilers-archive if you want more input.
You can run Dragon of Icespire Peak for as few as one player or as many as five players. Each player starts with a 1st-level character.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/doip/running-the-adventure#Overview
Is it a good adventure to introduce players
Yeah, it’s a good one!
How do I write a D&D campaign if I'm not a good writer?
I heard Icespire peaks is all over the place as a sequence story. Will that affect a plauer looking for a more narrative dnd approach?
it is not all over the places.
You have 3 quests to choose from, after defeating 2, you unlock the next 3.
You can let your players to finish the first 3, then move on the next set.
It is still centric around Phandalin.
ask in #dm-discussion for more but basically, you're not the only one making the story
It starts that way, but gets more narrative-based as it goes on.
TBH I do better if I learn hands-on experience than just reading from a book. I know it's important to read at least the Basics Rules, but that much of info is too much for me to understand.
I recommend at least skimming some of it. You definitely don’t need to memorize it - you can always look something up later. You’ll learn how your character works (partially) through their creation, and then how the game works will come with playing.
tl;dr: Do both!
I highly recommend reading through them, even if you don't grasp all the concepts right away. Your character sheet will eventually help you with the math by listing the modifier you would add or subtract when making most of the rolls you'll have during the game. The Basic Rules will help you to understand the concepts and mechanics involved in playing. There are also some video series on YouTube that are geared towards teaching new folks the basics. The team at Geek & Sundry did a series called "Starter Kit: D&D Edition", where Jason Charles Miller runs a short adventure for a group of mostly first-timers, guiding them through character creation and the fundamentals of gameplay. Also, the folks at Critical Role made a series called "Handbooker Helper" which covers different aspects of the rules like Ability Scores, Skills, Saving Throws, Actions in Combat, Spellcasting, etc. Neither video series is 100% comprehensive, but they'll give you a different way to absorb the material to complement the written rules.
Hey I am new to DnD Beyond and am already loving how easily to create and update characters are! I do have 1 question though, is there a way that I can use my books I have bought hard copy to have them for online use with my website account? I find the online source to be faster then flipping thru pages as my hands get sweaty sometimes.
Or would a master subscription get me all the books online?
If you’ve got the physical books, you can use DDB’s homebrew tools to recreate that content for free. (For private use only; please don’t publish it.)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew
Alternatively, you can buy just the parts you need, like a single subclass. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace
Neither subscription grants direct access to paid game content, but a user with a Master Tier subscription can enable Content Sharing for a campaign which allows the group to share their purchased game content with each other.
https://support.dndbeyond.com/hc/en-us/articles/115011257067-Campaign-Content-Sharing-and-You
Where can I find the products I've bought ?
Like your order history? You can find that here.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace
I need some help
I'm trying to make a monster from scratch but I don't understand some terms that are used in the creation sheet
nvm i need to go to the help section
Are they game terms or site terms?
game terms
(#ddb-support is meant for technical help with the site itself, not game questions.)
i was worried about what terms such as "# target" or "+# to hit" meant
That’s really just placeholder text.
But attacks for official monsters tend to follow that format.
A zombie’s slam attack, for example:
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17077-zombie
The “+3 to hit” gets added to the attack roll. In this case, they’d roll a d20 and add 3, then compare the total to the target’s AC.
Presumably that +3 comes from the zombie’s Strength score (+1) plus their proficiency bonus (+2).
It also says “one target”, which means it can only be used to attack a single creature at a time.
This definitely cleared things up, thank you!

Greetings, people! I´m new to d&d, and wanted to ask, if anyone could explain the basics to me. I´m very sorry if this message is not supposed to be written into this chat or disturbing to any conversations, I don´t really know where else to put it, as for the fact that I have just now joined this server. My curiosity is the greatest in the general topic of how to play the game and how to find people to play with.
I´d be very thankful if I´d receive support from someone.
Dearest greetings

question for DM outside of combat do spells consume the spell slot?
Unless the spell is cast as a ritual (only certain spells can be cast as rituals) then yes they use spell slot.
Feel free to ask any questions you might have in this channel :)

brand new to dnd. wanted to play for a while but never was able to find a group. Wanting to play a dwarf artificer but i dont have access to the class info on beyond since i havent paid for it and since this is my first attemt at playing, Im reluctant to spend the $30 to access it. any advice?
Buying any artificer subclass by itself will get you access to the full class.

So, I've bought a starter set and wish to play with my family, but I have doubts on whether I'll even be good at Dungeon Mastering
u don't start out a master..u start as a tryer
plus there's always the dnd helpline?
Okay I would like to play dnd but I have no clue where to even start
I have read up on the races and classes but it’s difficult for me to wrap my head around it
okay, i really need help to know where to go to even get started. like what should i even look into first to learn to understand dnd? should i read the rule book first?
First you can read the Player's Handbook, it will give you all the basic rules you need to know to get started
You can find it here : https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb
Im also new to DnD so I cant help you out my self but i did find this really good video on the basics By
Sherlock Hulmes and the title is HOW TO PLAY DUNGEONS & DRAGONS - A beginners guide to D&D
Ay, I converted my irl dnd character to dnd beyond but I don't know how to join a campaign
you need the campaign creator to send you a link to it there might be another way i dont know though
Ah
So I can only play with actual people who genuinely invite me?... Man there goes my plan of just joining something
yea
but it dose help prevent a total stranger joining the party and messing things up for the dm
True
Ehh, I'll just stick with playing it irl. This online shenanigans is too complicated for me to wrap my mind around
Alright have fun irl
I still have my genshin impact
lol
Joining a D&D Beyond campaign is like being invited to join an IRL table
Instead of being told "Hey, we play at the local gaming store" you get sent a link to the campaign
The first time I got invited to a game irl I just simply stood in silence until they got so uncomfortable they invited me
That.....doesn't sound like an ideal way of joining a game, I'll be honest
Generally speaking, unless it's Adventurer's League, campaigns are by invitation and D&D Beyond operates under the same assumption
Ehh, maybe I'll try watching someone on YouTube or twitch or smthng
Then later I might join

Yea, but I must be honest, I'm not too experienced with dnd
Only played a few games irl
You don't need to be, a lot of people run newcomer friendly games
And often joining a new campaign, with new people and a new character, can be like you're fresh to the hobby again
So I wouldn't sweat it
I'm not used to a new character
I've stuck to half-elf bard and elf ranger
Mainly elf ranger, but if they didn't allow it I chose to seduce everyone
Well I mean, they'll still be a new character in the sense that they'll be a fresh start
True
Let's not bring that meme up, it's gross, inappropriate, and tired
Can we petition for a newcomer voice chat?
How do I play dnd
We have a general voice chat that is often free and also the people that use it tend to be doing so to help newcomers anyway
I would recommend you start by checking out the basic rules. They're pinned in this channel

hey, i just got into d&d and ive made a character (waiting for my friend to make hers) any suggestions on where to go from here?
yo im new just made my character today (6/19/22) and i have no idea how to play or what to do and neither does my sister. we need help
I'm newish to dming is it okay to make a character sheet for a boss fight character or should I stick with monster manual
making NPCs like PCs is ususally not a great idea.
- PCs are sort of glass cannons, which is not a great thing for a boss
- PCs have a lot of extra abilities and stats that arent useful to the DM for a boss fight. So a Boss that is build like a PC is unnecessarily complicated to run
the monster manual has a pretty good selection "generic NPC statblocks". If non of those are right for your needs, there are a lot more in Monsters of the Multiverse.
Hello, I’m completely new to dnd and could use a few pointers on how everything works here
welcome
there are a number of useful links on how the game works pinned to this channel
Hello, this is the first time I have ever even thought about playing D&D and I really need some help understanding how things work and how to be a good dm
I would strongly recommend getting some experience as a player before trying your hand at being a DM.
Okay
There are many youtube channels on how to, or live game, find one that fit your style.
hi im a new begginers :3
hey
@steady flower @<976329125012848640> Hello and welcome... if you have some specific questions please feel free to ask. Otherwise, we have links in the pinned post of this channel that may help you get started
Good dnd starting class?
Rogue is almost everytime occupied and im not too much in barbarian
Is fighter decent ?
Depends at what you mean by 'good'?
I would personally advise a new player to go either fighter, barbarian, monk or rogue, as the spell casters are a little bit confusing for the beginning
If your DM knows the game well, feel free to ask them about the spellcaster classes
Explorer of dungeons where enemies and traps are at every corner
Again, every class can excel at that
If you're a newcomer to the game and want a class that isn't too complicated, I'd recommend fighter or barbarian
Fighter seems decent
Fighter is one of the strongest class for melee characters
I saw one time someone use heat spell then animal transform so that every turn the enemy would take big amounts of damage
Ooohh I love melee
What do you want your character to be ? A glass cannon ? A strong wall to protect your party members ? Something in between ?
If you want to read more about the fighter class, you can go there : https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/fighter
Yeah, the second link has more content
Strong wall
Ok
Im gonna go read
Then you can go Barbarian, Paladin or Fighter, these 3 make really good tanks
What will be good races for wizards?
every race can be a good wizard, assuming you play with more recent rules and races. if your racial ability scores are fixed, like originally written in the Player's Handbook, then humans, high elves, half elves, Tieflings and gnomes have some advantage as they get a bonus to intelligence
Then, as a wizard, in adventures. Should i be more to a glass canon or a supporter?
whatever style you prefer
there are many ways to play a wizard. you can focus on doing damage, focus on control or on support or try to balance it all
and what is meant by home brewing?
homebrewing refers to make up your own rules and options like races and (sub)classes
some people also publish their homebrew for others to use
ok, something like DIY things in DnD?
yeah basically.
if i bought something like armors, what should i do to use them?
Can i make my own potion?
for Armor, you'd need to be proficient - otherwise you suffer many penalties, like not being able to cast spells at all
You could probably make your own potions, but this falls more under 'crafting magic items'
I let a player in my campaign make healing potions during her downtime as the party doesn't have a dedicated healer and it means as a DM I don't need to worry about always dropping them as loot
im new to this game but like i just finsihed creating my character, whats the next step

Hello! I'm really new to dnd itself but I'm interested in learning! Any advice helps.
hellooo ive never actually played dnd but i rlly rlly want to and i hope i can play with some people on here or get some advice on how to get started
Welcome, folks! There’s some helpful starter links in the pinned messages here, but if you’ve got any specific questions, fire away!
Ello! I’m new to d&d and have already created my character and what not but want to learn more and hopefully play a game. If anyone can give any advice that would be great 🙂

hello ima also new and ama little confused on how to do campaigns
What about campaigns has you confused, specifically?
Hello everybody. I apologize if you recently responded this. Online and dnd beyond forums I only found responses from 2 or 3 years ago. My question is if it's possible to have the physical books you purchase unlocked on DND beyond digital content of if that's not gonna be ever possible. Thanks.
At the moment there has been no announcement that this will be possible. The best option if you don't want to rebuy things is to recreate the options as private homebrew
Oh. Thank you. I didn't think of that option 😅
You can also buy just the parts you need instead, like a single subclass.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Thank you Spamandtuna

I am a little confused about the difference between normal and 5e? Could anyone explain?
Since D&D first released in 1974, the rules have gone through a few different versions.
Fifth edition is the current version, and has been since 2014.
Everything you see on D&D Beyond is for fifth edition.
Think of it like sequels in a video game series. Each one is its own unique thing. Even if they share some overaching story elements and a basic style, some of the specifics can change from one to the next.
What is homebrew?
content made by people not affiliated with WotC
Oh thank you
are there maybe any one shot games for brand new players to help them get aquainted with the game? I just now made a character and am looking for a hopefully walk through game to help me learn, I didnt see any other place to ask.
they're perks you pick in place of upgrading your stats.
some still let you upgrade stats anyway.
Oh
How do I make good characters for a campaign with 6 people? Do I just use a randomizer, and if so how does that work?
you could... just let them make their own characters.
I would suggest filling a niche that no one else has filled, makes a character feel less redundant
im new and looking for a ones shot campaign i already have my character charles a level 1 wood elf with a pet gryffin

Just from a phrasing point of view, a one-shot is an adventure completed in a single session, while a campaign is a series of adventures spread over many sessions
So you can't really have a one-shot campaign
Hello all i played my first game of DnD Last night [[Ever]] and it was Heavily advised that i remake my character on dndbeyond but im running into some issues i dont mean to bother you all but ive been sent here by the DnD Discord
What issues are you encountering?
What does homebrew mean?
It's content made by the players, as opposed by Wizards of the Coast (official) or another company (third party)
It can refer to one of three things
- house rules
- custom monsters, magic items, spells etc
- your own world or setting
only one?
only one what?
It can be any. I think Davyd just meant it usually refers to one of those, based on whatever context its used it
a Homebrew rule is a house rule. A homebrew monster is a home-made monster
etc
Yeah, exactly
ok thanks
does one-shot mean one life?
A one shot in game terms means that it is just a one time adventure that is mostly done in one session
One shot: whole adventure in 1 session
Campaign: an adventure over many sessions
I am trying to get into dnd but I can’t find anyone that is “free to play” any suggestions

What dose when they say like 5e right new to to the game style
I dont really understand how you worded that, but 5e is the latest edition of dnd
Lol thank you
Yeah it stands for 5th edition :))
oh so this is the place to ask questions i was asking them in the general chat sorry
so are there new subclasses for the Artificer
Define “new”
The last time an artificer subclass was published was in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. There haven’t been an UA reveals of new ones since then
There were three Artificer subclasses(Battle Smith, Alchemist, Artillerist) introduced in the Eberron book, Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything reprinted them and added a fourth subclass, the Armorer.
Kinda, yeah. They make a special “arcane armor” that they use to protect themselves in combat. It’s basically a magical iron man
They're basically Iron Man 🙂
I am Groot
I think the basic idea is you just get a couple of spells, and you spend ki to cast them instead of spell slots
If the playtest content (Unearthed Arcana) goes well, green barbarian can even grow bigger and angrier with the Path of the Giant
hello there I just joined & that is cool one thinks!

how was/is your day?

hopefully you find your way there soon
Hey
hey
hey can u explain to me the table of attribute score and modifiers? When does that apply?
What do you mean by "attribute score"?
Abilities like Strength, Dexterity and Wisdom?
You use that in order to convert your ability score (big number) into your ability modifier (small number with a + or a -)
Your modifier is what you add to (or subtract from) dice rolls
The table is a quick reference version of the formula, which is:
Ability Modifier = (Ability Score - 10)/2, rounded down
So an ability score of 15 would be a modifier of (15-10)/2 = 2.5 = +2
and for what is the modifier? for rolling dices for an attack etc.?
Yes, certain skills are commonly based off specific abilities so you get the ability modifiers on roll of that skill (Athletics is typically Strength based for example)
So for example, if you're rolling for damage with a weapon, it might call for you to add your strength modifier
Yes. Nearly all of the d20 rolls you will make will be tied to one of your six abilities. The final result will be a combination of the die roll, your modifier for that ability, and a modifier based on your level of proficiency. So if you're a Level 1 Fighter with a Strength of 16 and you're attacking with a Battleaxe, your attack roll would be a d20, plus your Strength modifier which in this case would be +3, plus your Proficiency Bonus since Fighters are proficient with martial weapons(of which the Battleaxe is one). Your character sheet on D&D Beyond will simplify this by showing a +5 attack bonus next to the Battleaxe in your list of attack options.
k thx
Put very simply
Whenever something asks for an Ability check or saving throw, it wants you to add that ability's Ability Modifier, which is derived from the Ability Score, the table of which details each score and corresponding modifier.
Attacks also use it according to their rules more specifically done, a big hammer using strength, a bow using dexterity, etc.
can someone teach me how to play?
hello, Iam new at dnd and would like to be explained how the game work
Hi to both of you. There are some very helpful links pinned in this section, especially the basic rules and the beginner's guides.
hi!!! i'm very, very new to D&D, been interested for a while tho. does anyone have any tips on creating characters and backstories?

hi, I'm new to the server but used dnd beyond for a long time. I'm a DM but also like to be the player sometimes.
I can
Hey I'm super new and I have a question when you roll a dice to attack are you pressing the Hit/DC or Effect to roll.
I also don't understand how Proficiency and initiative works.
i'm newer as well but i can answer some. when a combat encounter starts you roll initiative, initiative decides turn order and you add your DEX modifier to it.
Oh
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores goes into proficiency, initiative, and other such things
As far as attacks, first you roll to hit. You're number rolled plus the attack modifier needs to meet or exceed the armor class of the target. If the attack does, you then roll the effect, or damage, of the attack.
Oh okay thank
Since D&DB hides the backstory on a character sheet, does that mean I'm not supposed to share the backstory and note with other players but just the DM?
The backstory stuff is mainly for you and the DM to have to help you both integrate the character into the world. What you and the DM share with the other players is up to you two to figure out.
Some groups lean heavily into using backstories, other groups leave it barebones or don’t use it at all.
The reason it’s hidden is because people like their secrets. 🙊
So in that spirit, what you choose to tell your fellow players — and when — is up to you.
is there a god that rewards you if your angry?
There are a lot of gods with various portfolios. You should check out the appendix in the players handbook to see if there's one that fits what you're looking for
Hello
I am new to dnd and I have all the essentials so I was wondering if there is any extra advice?
I am a player as well
Welcome! What kind of advice were you looking for?
When in doubt, just use the greek pantheon lol
Sorry for the late reply I was just wondering of general knowledge about monsters and creatures
I am very tried aswell so I’m going to bed
Goodnight everyone if your still awake
You could start by browsing through the monsters in the free Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#MonsterStatBlocks
After that, you could check out the Monster Manual, or Monsters of the Multiverse.
And the site has a bunch of articles about monsters in general.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/running-monsters
hi hi, so im brand new to all things dnd. where should i start?
hey and welcome, take a look posts that are pinned to this channel
lots of useful links for beginners
perfect! thankyou:)
hello im new to this lol and i made a character but i have no idea if i did it correct
Welcome! Feel free to share a link to it if you want to show off / get some advice.
I’d suggest swapping your Intelligence and Wisdom scores, too. Rangers use WIS for their spellcasting, so a higher number there will help.
yeah i had forgot which one i was supposed to have higher i appreciate the help
so im trying to dm my first game
anything i should know before i start planning stuff?
Off the top of my head...
- Join us in #dm-discussion (get the role if you need it in #880965682462875679 )
- Hydrate
- If you make a mistake, you can call it out and reverse it. Though sometimes "mistakes" end up being great
- You're telling a story collaboratively with the players
- If there's a rules question that you don't know and would take time to research, make a quick ruling and mention that you'll look it up later - more important to keep the game rolling.
- You are a player at the table and should be having fun!
There’s a good article here with tips for first-time DMs:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
What is West March?
It's a style of game that involves exploring wilderness from a safe home base, and a larger player-base than normal. A subset of that player base plays in each session. Here's the person who ran the original West Marches campaign: https://arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/78/grand-experiments-west-marches/
Is there a way for me to rise the dead of anything I kill?
Necromancy spells
Yes but specifically
Okay thanks

Hello wonderful people! I consider myself a newcomer as the last time I played D&D was when second edition was new. I'm interested in getting back into it. Will buying the players handbook on D&D Beyond be enough to join a campaign? Is there anything else I should purchase?
Yes I started with online and i have only used the players handbook tho the DM was very helpful
You don't need to purchase anything to join a campaign; the Basic Rules provides enough to get started, plus many DMs use content sharing on D&D Beyond
that being said, the PHB is plenty as a start for a new player
hello people of discord i am a newcomer to d&d and i really want to play but my country doesnt have much of a comunnity is there any place where i can find games to play online:)

In which case, have a look at the channels linked by the Dyno bot a few posts up and see if anything in #looking-for-players takes your fancy

What are the ethics of quiting an online paid game?
The DM is great. The players are shit heads. One player chose a less than useless character that is not only incompotent and adds no value but actually works again the party. A second character is verbally abusive and thinks it's funny. My options are to quit. Change my personality to dgaf and be passive aggressive and still pay until I get kicked out, but hate it. Kill (or die trying) one or more of the shit heads. That way they can make a new character who might understand this is a co operative game, and know how to play nice with others.
I have mentioned that we should have a sit down and discuss, but I got "I'm not telling my characters secrets, figure it out"
Ok. I like the DM and don't want to burn that bridge. But im not paying to get angry and pissed off.
I made a commitment but I didn't sign up for a crap experience.
What is the correct thing to do?
D&D is supposed to be fun. Don't feel pressured to stay in a game that isn't fun for you. Talk to the DM privately and explain your frustrations. If the behavior you're having problems with isn't what the DM wants at their table, give them a chance to address it with the group. If the DM has no plans to rein in the other players, I would strongly recommend leaving the game. Be diplomatic but direct with the DM, let them know your problem isn't with them, but the group dynamic isn't fun for you and you can't continue to spend money on a game you aren't enjoying.
what does it mean if something is opt in or opt out?
Opting in means that you are open to pay to play games. Opting out means you do not want to pay and they should not contact you if they are p2p only
Usually a private discussion with the DM. Express that you really like them and the game but that the disruptive nature of the other characters makes it hard for you to contribute and have fun. Ask if they have any suggestions or can perhaps speak to the others and come to a middle ground
If it’s a paid DM, do they have another game that is more compatible with your preferred play style? Might be worth asking the DM if they do.
ask for a discount lol
Lost Mines of Phandelver is an easy one to start with. It’s available for free here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
But also its free so everyone and their mom has it. A lesser used one is Dragon of IceSpire Peak. Spoiler, theres a dragon in IceSpire Peak.
If you just want to hang out at a faire you can use The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. Its broken off into segmented areas that the players have to explore in order to progress.
My suggestion for practicing is pretty niche. The Nerd's D&D Adventure. Each player gets a little quest you can lead them through alone or in a group. Its just little prewritten one-shots for each class in the Standard Rules.
Example: Red the Rogue has to use his thievery skills to figure some stuff out. Blue the Barbarian has to smash his way through a tomb using his brute force. and so on
Each adventure ends with them acquiring a gemstone which is used in the finale
You can have a player do multiple of the gemstone quests as the same class or have them do a gemstone as the intended class to get a feel for what each class's role is.
Of course they dont have to be Nerds. They can all be the same race or different races
well hello there everyone
anyone wants to help me build my first character?
What kind of help were you looking for, specifically?
mainly the backstory, ability's and weapons
#character-discussion can give you some advice for those. 👍🏻
The character creator on dndbeyond is good for setting up stats but its pretty garbage at Background. You can tell its where the web devs spent the least of their time
There's not much for D&D Beyond to do with that aspect of a character. Backstory is creative, not mechanical.
Mhm. Mhm. I didnt say backstory. I said background
What more should they provide beyond the option to choose one of the Backgrounds in the books?
Plus, OP said backstory.
Guys i think i found the web dev
@jovial flicker there's no need for rudeness. Let's keep things civil and on topic
If anyone has feedback or suggestions about features of the site they find lacking, they should feel free to share it in #ddb-feedback
This is the same question I would have asked.
Hail friends.
the only thing I am missing from the background section are some tables. Like the Soldier background has a table for your Rank. you never see this table if you only look at backgrounds in the builder
dunno what else they need honestly
☝🏻 And that’s the kind of feedback we can pass along. Thanks!
A'ight. So quick and dirty.
I'm Zendrist/Zen/Zed. NOT new to D&D as I started with 2nd edition, loved 3.5 and Pathfinders (not D&D I know). The group I'm in now, however, mostly uses 5e so now I'm here to hopefully hang out and learn some new stuff because this game has changed A LOT since 3.5
This channel is more for people completely new to D&D. You'll probably find #dm-discussion and #dnd-rules more useful
Got it. Thanks Davyd.
What should I do first to get started
There’s a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages here that will get you started.
But if you have any specific questions, we’re happy to answer.
lol, I would say Zendrist counts as newbie. The game is different than 2e and was very confusing when I got back into it too. now even more choices adding to confusion.
Thx
my advice, hit up the Basic Rules book. should be free on dndbeyond. it will help tremendously to get familiar with standard rules and how certain things like spells and combat works.
Where is this Basic Rules book at
well you are on the discord, so I assume you have a beyond account. On the website, Go under sources in the menu. select All, and basic rules should be first in the list.
Thx
yeah go figure...the thing labeled game rules...isnt game rules
Thanks. I just quit. I just don't understand wtf is wrong with people these days.
You don't even need a D&D Beyond account to access the basic rules. They're freely accessible here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Well hello all.
If I find a GM in looking for players, should I and them or how does it work?
You direct message them to tell them you are interested. And go from there.
how am i meant to find a non 18 game!
Patience and keep searching, they do exist
Many places that have message boards for people looking for players to join their game also have space for players to post who are looking for a game. For example, the forum on D&D Beyond has a section called "Looking For Players & Groups". If you post a message there with the topic prefix of LFG and describe the sort of group you're looking for, you might get a response.
ok
Hi, does anyone have a few minutes to just chat with me regarding D&D. I'm interesting in getting into it but feel that a small chat can clear up questions I have. Thanks in advance

I too am brand new to DND 🙂
Welcome, folks!
There's a good article here to get you started, but #character-discussion can help, too, if you've got any specific questions.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/724-new-players-guide-making-your-first-character
chad
Feel free to share the link if you want to show off or get a few quick pointers.
Oh thank god
Or you can send it in #character-discussion if you want more of a deep dive.
I think you've got your character set to Private, which means none of us can see it.
You can change that if you click you character portrait, select "Character Settings" in the sidebar, then scroll to the very bottom.
yah I did that just now
Looks neat!
I'd suggest equipping your shield and weapon there on the equipment tab.
done
And for your ability scores, you might want to move around some of your racial bonuses. In general, you'll be better off if you aim for even-numbered scores instead of odd-numbered ones.
Since your ability score modifiers only increase on evens.
You can turn on the "Customize your Origin" option in the home tab of the editor, and it'll open optional boxes to switch what your race adds their ability score improvement to.
As said, it'll help, since 10 and 11 give the same nothing, 12 and 13 give the same +1, and so on
So changing your 14 strength to a 15 doesn't give you much of an immediate benefit.
ther is this dice rolling animation
They're v-human, so that's not necessary.
You might need to enable hardware acceleration for your browser. (Or turn off dice rolling in your character settings.)
Generally speaking, a variant race changes some of the things the "main" race gives you.
I changed my stats
Human has a +1 to every ability, but Vhuman has a +1 to two different abilities and a feat.
In this case, the regular human gives +1 to every ability score. Variant human take that down to two, but you can then choose a feat instead.
Looks a lot stronger for a fighter. Nicely done.
(Did you mean to override your Wisdom score to 1?)
wee
mayhaps
I was thinking like a soldier who doesnt remember th battle and is kinda lost only evidenc being his banner and general protective attitud
Wisdom score of 1 is very low
Probably far lower than what you are expecting from a roleplay point of view
Usually no score is as low as 1.
oh wow
An Intelligence score of 1 would be beyond debilitating. There's a reason you can't roll lower than a 3. In the 5E world, common animals like dogs and cats have an Intelligence of 3.
Isn't 1 INT basically animalistic with no capability of logic or reason?
oh wow
oops
for some reason no matter what number i put for intelligenc i get a 1
I think most spells that require INT saves don't apply to anything below INT 4
An Intelligence and Charisma of 1 is what happens to you if you're hit with Feeblemind, and EIGHTH level spell. It takes magic that strong to fry your brain that hard.
You might have manually overwrote the value
Yeah, that's why I asked if you meant to override it. Sorry if that wasn't clear. 😅
That's better. Slightly lower than the average person, but you are at least capable of speaking and thinking now
oop
(It happens. Don't worry.)
so now what
The only spells I can recall that require a minimum Int score are buff spells like Beast Bond and Rary's Telepathic Bond, there are plenty of harmful spells requiring an Int save that can affect very low-Int targets

people take in brand new people?
A lot of them do, yeah.
Every single person in there was new once, too.
Say, for the looking for dm thing, when it says name, does it mean character name or account name?
Account
Player name, gotta find each other in this world first 🙂
K,thanks
what the difference in DM and players
Each player controls their own character, while the DM essentially controls the world around them.
There’s a good section here in Lost Mine of Phandelver (available for free) that more fully explains the DM’s role in the game.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop/introduction#TheDungeonMaster
Am I able to play on my mobile?
As a dm or justa player?
Depends on the platform being used. Audio chat is certainly possible, but if you're using something like Roll20 or FantasyGrounds, trying to make use of the maps is going to be a challenge. Honestly, any time I've been in a group where someone could only join via their phone, it really slowed things down.
Ok cause I need to get my PC repaired so I can't play on kt
As a mobile player because my pc broke i agree but yes you can play beyond dnd on mobile
Can u teach me how?
Download the app
Wait till your friend inv you to the thing
Yea I have none
I have
As twitch apple or google
I've done everything I just do not have people to play with
Well i cant help there
Oof

what if I want to do campaign but I want my own character
elaborate?
Are you asking if you can be both the DM and the player at the same time?
If so, there’s a lot of risks in doing that, especially if you’re new to the game.
If Player A has the PHB, and Player B has Sword Coast, while the DM has another book, and Player C has a master level subscription to DNDBeyond, can Player C turn on content sharing while also being a player for the campaign that the DM created?
Not quite. Only the one with the Master Subscription can share their books with the campaign, but they can be a player or the DM
...No. that's literally not true. Once content sharing is turned on everyone's books are shared.
So how do ability checks work depending on your current attributes?
roll the d20, add your relevant ability modifier.
where do i get that from?
So if you subtract 10 from your ability score then divide by two and round down you get your ability modifier.
For example, an ability score of 16 gives a modifier of +3, an ability score of 8 gives -1
Each skill has an ability connected to it, so you use that ability modifier for the skill check, plus your profiency bonus if you are profient in that skill
the ability score. At character creation, you determine ability scores. Then, later, these are influenced by the Ability Score Improvement granted by your Race - for the most part (newer race design, and the Customize your Origin rule), this is basically a +2/+1 or a +1/+1/+1 to whatever two or three (respectively) different ability scores you want.
Then, you derive the modifier from the score, in the way explained by Lionn, or by referencing the table found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiersTable
so i want to start dnd but i know nothing about the rules
Well you are in luck because you can find the free Basic Rules here https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
And if you check the pinned messages in this channel you can find a bunch of other helpful links
thanks
And if you've got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
for a warlock how many times can i move Hex after killing a creature?
For the duration
so 8 hours ?
Yep
how do you calculate time in combat?
Assuming you used a large enough spell slot.
No, only when you cast it.
thanks you 😄
You also need to maintain concentration.
One round is six seconds. 10 rounds is one minute.
Those rules are here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Concentration
Can only concentrate on one spell at once, and you have to roll to see if you maintain it when you take any damage
So every time you take damage in that eight hour duration, you risk the spell ending.
ok ok
At which point you need to cast the spell again to keep using it.
a round is 6 seconds. So a combat that goes for 3 rounds is an 18 second fight in the game world.
now, that's true no matter how many combatants - two combatants or twenty is still a 6 second round, it's just a matter of each turn being what they do.
And if you start to cast another spell that requires concentration, or if you’re incapacitated or killed, the spell ends as well.
ok, this dude is playing warlock
Things that end concentration include
Damage (DC 10 or half the damage (so 22 damage is DC 11), whichever is higher)
Incapacitated (including Stunned, Paralyzed, Unconscious)
Casting another concentration spell, at all
Taking the Ready action to ready a Spell, as readying a spell requires concentration
I fancy myself a warlock aficianado, I'd be happy to do my best explaining as much as I can.
@topaz garnet I would want to learn how to play it the best way possible
it depends on what you want to do. Warlock is one of the most variable classes in the game.
You can do a holy Celestial Warlock, doing the somewhat sketchy things behind the scenes, like summoning devils to fight cultists, while also healing and supporting a team, maybe having a celestial familiar join you, or a tome of scripture and cantrips and rituals.
You can do a dark magic wielding hexblade, cursing enemies, teleporting to them, forcing a soul to fight for you as a specter.
You can do many, many things.
I'm pact of the blade
Alright, and what Patron?
how do i check that
it's a level 1 thing
Should have chosen it at level 1
pact of the blade is something you choose at level 3
If you are using the DDB it is in Features and Traits as "Otherworldly Patron"
The Hexblade
alright, very good
so you want to primarily have Charisma (as this governs your Warlock magic, and the Hexblade (especially with Pact of the Blade) can use charisma for their weapon)
Then Constitution for hit points and general survivability, and 14 dexterity (a +2 modifier) is good enough as medium armor can only use up to +2.
The thing is, spell selection and invocation choice is very very variable on top.
A Warlock can have independent choices between many spells (including cantrips), invocations, their patron, and their pact boon. So these choices mainly depend on your intent.
As a Hexblade with PotB (the blade) you will stand in a decent position, but be slightly squishier with a d8 hit die instead of d10 like the 'martial' classes. For this, Constitution is important.
As for invocations, when you reach level 5, Thirsting Blade is a given to get your extra attack, unless you intend on using a certain cantrip or two - Green-Flame Blade and/or Booming Blade, which make only one attack but with a bonus effect and dealing damage.
Whether or not you take Eldritch Blast, and even augment it, is up to you as well.
thanks, this is really helpful
the thing is, Warlock is so versatile that it's difficult to point in a direction. It's more of a "I made this, how do I make it better at X" and then it gets sculpted. Like how Witch Bolt is actually really under par when it comes to spells.
ok, so is on how you build it
yep. A key difference to their spellcasting against other classes is how they don't have Spellcasting, they have Pact Magic, which has different slots for your Warlock level, and these come back on a short rest rather than a long rest.

Hello I am wizard gnome lvl 4 I have the opportunity to gain spells. I just dont know how many Spells I am able to put in my book. I currently have 6 1st level and two 2nd level.
I just want to make sure this is correct
So wizards are unique as a class in that they can write down any wizard spell they run across into their spell book.
But they can only cast those that they learn and have prepared and have the right spell slots for.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Wizard can provide a bit of information about that.
A level 4 wizard has 4 1st level spell slots and 3 2nd level spell slots.
And 4 cantrips
You start with six 1st-level spells, and you get two more each time you level up.
So you should have at minimum eighth 1st-level spells, plus four more 1st- or 2nd-level ones.
hi im new here loved to play
Hi
I have been trying to find a group of people to join me in a quest and I am level one and character name is lizard wizard the first. And my class is wizard
Looking for players topic might help with that. Me personly looking for a dm. But already used the section.
thank you

but how do i know with what pepoele i want to play with?
I do recommend reading the basic rules, make a character or two to see how the rules/game mechanics work in conjuction with a character sheet, then watch a video or two (lots of YouTube and Twitch videos) of people actually playing. Then go find a group to play with.
thats why i want to play cuz my sociality sucks
Well I can't personally help you with that.
D&D and other social/collaborative games can be a good way to build up your social skills though.
Just takes time and effort.
yeah ig but i already made a character want to see it?
You can also find groups to play with at local libraries, schools, game and comic shops, etc.
Feel free to share characters in #character-discussion - lots of folks there can provide feedback and advice.
i dont go to libraries im am a gamer lol xD
Welp I got to get going - real life beckons - laters and good luck! I hope you find a great group to play D&D with and enjoy the game!
thank man bye
hii! im a beginner to dnd and i was just wondering like how do i start a campaign, what do i need to do in it?
like is it just what the plot is or is there more to it?
as the dm you can do one of two things. get a premade adventure or just steal the plot from something youve seen before
so like "steal the plot" like if i saw a show i could use the show plot for my campaign?
Yup
But also on dndbeyond theres a free adventure book
I think its still free
Go to dndbeyond and look for lost mines of phandelver
okay! thank you thats helps a lot!
Just dont forget youre allowed to lie as the dm
kk!

i know a bit about d&d classes but i don't know what race and stats are best for artificer with the subclass artillerist
Hello I'm new to d&d in general and I wanted to ask if anyone wanted to make a group and start a campaign
Each class description includes a "Quick Build" section for some basic tips on creating a character of that class, including which ability scores to prioritize. If you're looking for which races are thematically a good fit for Artificers, it'll depend a lot on the world your game will be set in. Any race with a tradition of crafting/construction and magic would be a good fit. Gnomes are a popular choice, Dwarves could work well too. But honestly, it's really about the story YOU want to tell. Is your Artificer part of their culture's long tradition? Are they an outlier, experimenting with strange magics that their society has never heard of, or has shunned? It's all up to you.
Hello! Im a newbie in d&d but i whould really love to find out more about it and join a group and start a campaign!
Welcome, there are some helpful links for new players in the pinned messages of this channel, including the free Basic Rules.

No problem. Feel free to ask any questions you might have while you are reading through those links :)
Um how do I look for groups I just moved to uk from us and I want to find a group
Online groups can check #looking-for-players etc that the bot posted a bit above.
In person, I know of a Meetup group in my city, so maybe you might find something there or advertised in a local game store.
My two groups are both from my workplace and friends
Hi, I'm creating a monk. Would the two most important Skill attributes be Dexterity and Wisdom?
That's what the quick build suggests :)
Yes, as those to abilities determine your AC, ki abilities saves.
What kind of barrier to entry is there for prices? I have noticed there are tons of books, and I am curious how many I actually need to start.
The only book you need is free, the basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Beyond that, the only 'core' books are the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Monster Manual
Thanks!
You can also create a character for free.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Use the digital dice for free.
Play free adventures, like this one.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
And if you want to expand your options, you can buy just the pieces you need -- like a single subclass -- if you're not ready for the full book.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of that book, too, in case you decide to get the rest later.
Amazing. I was always under the assumption it was super expensive to get started.
Nah, just once you're hooked. 😜
dnd is is certainly one of the cheaper hobbies if you want to, though of course people tend to start buying things anyway
I have a question, I am making a new character and it says on dnd beyond that it is 1d8 per druid level but then it says 8+ constitution for hit points, does it mean the d8 + constitution or is it the d8+8+constitution
At 1st level, your character has 1 Hit Die, and the die type is determined by your class. You start with hit points equal to the highest roll of that die, as indicated in your class description. (You also add your Constitution modifier, which you’ll determine in step 3.) This is also your hit point maximum.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice
So a druid starts with 8 + CON.
Then you add 1d8 + CON every time you level up.
Or 5 + CON for each level, if you take the average instead of rolling.
oooohh okay thanks
Hi! So i am completely new to this and i really thought it could be fun playing a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, but i have no idea where to start. Where i can find a group of people and how i make a character and all that go's with it.
If you look at the channels under the D&D Games tab there is a looking for players and looking for dm section.
Should i go make a character on the D&D Beyond website first? and can i choose whatever i like or how does it work
Certain DMs might allow or restrict certain choices.
I'd suggest making a character to get a feel for it, but be open to any changes your future DM might request.
Particularly with your character's ability scores.
(Standard array or point buy are probably safer choices for now, rather than rolling.)
okay, sure! well ty for the help
i'm writing my background on my character and it shows that i should write my faith, faith how, religion or what do they mean by that
That's another one that might depend on your DM -- specifically, what deities exist in the campaign setting they use.
So i just skip that? Because shouldn't i make my character before finding a dm?
I'd suggest going in with a general idea, and then working with your DM to pin down the specifics.
So you might decide for now that your character worships some kind of trickster god, then your DM can help you determine who that god is and how it fits into the world.
So i just let it be and find a DM without that, and then it depends on what campaign were in? sorry i am very new to this, so i don't know anything.
and what does the GP mean when i'm making my lifestyle
Unless faith is intrinsically important to the character you're creating -- a cleric, for example -- then you can safely save it for later.
well i chose a dragonborn, wizard cause i thought that were cool
You can read about lifestyle expenses here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#LifestyleExpenses
So far I've been lucky enough to be a player in campaigns where the DM was able to share their D&DBeyond access with their players.
If I'm ready to give a go at DMing myself, is the PHB a MUST buy, or does something like Tasha's give access to everything necessary for my players to have full access to builds, classes, feats, etc.? There's a bit of a monetary barrier that I'm hoping to avoid as much as possible...
It doesn't have to be the DM that shares their content. Anyone with a Master Subscription can enable Content Sharing. The DM can then go in and enable or disable specific books.
And once it's enabled, everyone's purchases get shared, not just the DM's or the person with the sub.
Can you play it for free or is there some sort i have to pay?
☝🏻 @raw nymph Check here for some free options.
You can also buy just the individual options your group wants to use, rather than either full book.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too, if you decide to get the rest later.
cause i mean if i play it virtual and find a dm right now
You can definitely play without spending anything.
oh ok
So in my characters name, should i just write the first name or the name and something after like "Manto, The White" "Manto The Magnificent" or how should i write it. that was just some examples
Whatever you want
okay ty
And you can always change it
There's no wrong answer; some people even put an alias
well i'm kind of done now there is just equipment but idk how it works, it looks confusing, i obviously don't have anything but equipment is for the campaigns right?
im a wizard so should i add a staff or how does it work?
If you click Add Starting Equipment, it’ll walk you through some basic choices based on your class and background.
The equipment thing baffled me at first too lol.
there is standard starting equipment or gold buy. you would need to talk to your DM what they want but generally, going for the standard equipment is a safe bet
Don't think you can in these channels, but notice you have a grey bar that says STARTING EQUIPMENT and another bar below that that says CURRENT INVENTORY?
yeah so i pressed the starting equipment and then clicked on the EQUIPMENT and i can choose "an arcane focus" and in that option i can choose a staff cause i'm a mage, so that would make sense
When you make your selections in Starting Equipment and click the red button, all that stuff will load into Current Inventory, and you're done (unless you want to manually add OTHER stuff)
so i can also choose the explores pack or the scholars pack what ever i want
Each section gives you, I think, 2 choices so yeah
well ty i just chose (a dagger, "an arcane focus"=staff, a scholars pack and a spellbook. so i just press add starting equipment?
yarp
Riley are you danish or some sort scandinavian 😅 well ty for the help
What tripped me up is I DON'T believe it jumps you right to the current equipment tab, so I thought I did something wrong, so I did it two more times before I figured it out, and I found I had 3 daggers, 3 scholars packs, etc
The name is mostly Irish but I'm from the US
np
so now i can just try find a dm? (looking for dm)?
Yeah, you can post in #750812887697588356 to let people know you’re looking. (Just copy+paste the template in the pinned messages there and fill it out.)
Or you can check the available games in #looking-for-players, and message that user directly if you find one you’re interested in.
And if you want to show off your character or get feedback, you can share a link to it in #character-discussion.
ok ty
For Hit Dice is it just a D8
Each class' description will tell you which size die to use
Okay thanks
Kind of feeling clockwork soul sorcerer anyone play one?
Never heard of it but sounds cool
I believe it's part of tasha's cauldron of everything
I've HEARD of it but haven't played. Seems time-control oriented, similar to...the Chronomancer Wizard?
it's not really about time
it's about Order. Like, you say "No, you're not rolling dis/advantage, just roll one d20." Or, Trance of Order, go "Nothing can attack me with advantage, and my rolls are a minimum of 10"
Good evening to all at least where I am from. I am very very new to this game and would like to learn how to play it. I have my character already made though I have no campaign to try things out to learn hands on.

Yo anyone wanna play?
What's a good weapon to have for a level 1-3 warlock
Eldritch Blast
Not spell
Hammer?
Or, for melee, something you’re proficient in and think fits the character
I'm currently using quarter staff but the damage is not great at +3
Use 2 hands
With my luck it'll be worse 😅 alright nvm
Every weapon is going to add STR (or DEX if it’s got the finesse property) to damage
Go for a finesse weapon, then. Use DEX.
Although Warlocks only get proficiency in simple weapons, and the only simple weapon with finesse is a dagger.
Which is why the very first answer you got was the correct one: Eldritch Blast. 😆
Okay thanks
