yeah thats a scam, dont do that, there is no game there just people trying to steal from you.
there are games that cost money to play in and they will be up front about a per session cost, but what you have on your hands is a bait and switch art scam
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. okokokokok, had a feeling
yeah, 2nd time I've been asked that, it's crazy man
This is unfortunately a very common scam recently.
I think another one js popped into my dms... not even trolling, idk yet tho
Please report them to Discord
will do š
I auto deny any dm I get from this server unless it's someone I've spoken to already
I'd like to do that, but I'm also looking for campaigns to join, so I keep them open š
Hiya guys. I'm a new player (still learning the basics like a noob) I'm looking for a cool capmpaign if anyones willing to have a weird, person. I do have a character which is half elf, half fae (if allowed). I am willing to re-do it if it doesn't fit peoples styles. I just want to make new mates, and have a laugh i guess. so if ur intereseted please let me know.
Head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
thanks.

Hihi! Im running planescape as a first time dm, is there anything I should know?
Are you running the official 5e adventure? There's a sub-channel for it in #1029833015423143957. Otherwise, you might get more useful generic advice over in #dm-discussion.
Ye! Tysm !
Hi! Nameās Cappped or Cappy, either is fine
Completely new to DnD, been interested for a while and I was doing some research about it many months ago for a short time and then I stopped. Decided I wanna pick it up and thought joining this server would be a good start!
Hope everyone reading has a great rest of their day :)

Hello, a great day to you too above me the bot message has a ton of links to help you ouin picking it back up. Feel free to ping me with any questions you might have.
Thanks, I appreciate it! Iāll definitely look into it once Iām free
question how often do people get picked up by a dm when posting looking for DM?
tbh, hard to say. I don't think the server keeps any stats on that
My recommendation would be proactive and also look for games that might interest you in #looking-for-players too
And if someone DMs you saying you can join their game if you pay for art, that's a scam
good to know good thing I'm broke XD I'm just trying to get back into it after a bad experience with my first DM
I can only speak for myself, but as a DM I have only ever gotten one person from that channel when I needed one, and they had enough to go on in their post that it worked out
But otherwise it's so much easier for me to make a post in #looking-for-players and have the interested players come to me, rather than browse through the looking-for-DM channel where most players don't bother including enough relevant info, and I'd have to ask stuff one by one (for example you mention you can play "most of the time", which is kind of useless to me if I was looking for players. It means the odds are good you can play when my game is, but I'd still have to spend time asking)
Like said above, you have lot better chances applying for games in that channel than wait for a DM to contact you š
Most action I see on looking-for-DM always seems to be people advertising their communities or paid games when the player has those options checked
Hello dear DMs,
I want to create my first character and now the issue of writing a backstory hit me. The issue is not me not having ideas, I have plenty, but I've often seen skits of players trying to do something annoying and the DMs, in turn, hating their job. I am aware that these are probably exaggerated for comedic effect, however the issue has now presented itself that the character not only needs to be fun to play, but also fun to DM.
So what are things you like to see in a backstory? What are things you do not like to see in a backstory? What is some miscellaneous advice on writing a backstory from the DMs perspective?
I understand that these things are often subjective, but I'm sure there are key points a critical mass of you will agree upon, so please let me know how I can make your day easier.
Thanks for the help c:
As a DM, I look for 5 things mainly:
- Can I easily tie this characters backstory into the game without having to redefine/change too much about the world fundamentally
- does this character work well in a party and cooperate?
- does this character have a good reason to adventure and risk their life?
- Does this character feel unnecessarily chosen, special or main-charactery for the level of the campaign?
- Does this character fit the theme of the game Iām playing?
Alright, thank you, I'll consider these points when writing. Could you please elaborate on the fourth point though? I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by that.
What they mean is, sometimes thereās a "main character syndrome"
For example the players character basically doesnāt slot in well as they basically "take over" the story/lead
Ah, alright, I understand
in dnd ya all part of a team a group of ppl together and if one person is trying to be the main character it really takes away from the other players fun
How would one avoid this issue though, or how serious does it need to get for it to become a problem? After all, the character you're making is -in some way- the main character of their own story. They will have specific goals and motivations, which can -at times- go against the best interest of the party (to my understanding this kind of organically created internal problems are a fun part of role playing. Please tell me if people don't like seeing that in DnD). What would be traits of a "main character syndrome" character which are not present in a well written character? Or is it just the scale?
Sorry for the late reply, Spacesodaz is correct. For example, a character solely chosen by all the gods to unite the kingdom, or a projection of the great archdevil, put too much emphasis and importance on them.
Ah, so basically the "Mary Sue" type traits, where you write a character in a way where the world -more or less- has to bend around them, instead of them existing in an established world. The intrinsic characteristics of a character do not pose as much of an issue as the extrinsic effect they necessarily have on the world.
In a roleplay aspect, letās use the example of the a paladin whose letās say "divinely chosen by the higher planes gods to unite the realms" straight away that character is front on forwards as opposed to the bard who just wants to "explore"
Mhm Mary sue, we all seen the "my name is twig, I am plain but beautiful. I must pick between my demon and angle lovers who looks exactly the same. Iām clumsy but versatile in all weaponry"
Each DM has their own tolerance, but the way I see it is:
has this character been given an opportunity to become important that is not available to what you might consider a normal PC
We all want our "moment" in game but that moment has to come as opposed to "the player wrote that it will happen"
Thatās also a good way to know if itās a main character
Just to be safe, though I don't think it should be an issue (this is a more specific question to the current character): A Warlock, who does the (cosmic) bidding of their (more-or-less benevolent) patron would not be an issue, right? Because 1. It ties into the class. 2. The character is not predetermined to succeed and might (most likely will) fail multiple times throughout the campaign. 3. It is a purely personal goal, which does not need to be used in the campaign, but gives the DM the opportunity of creating a quest involving the patron's goals.
What do you mean by ācosmicā bidding?
Also, that character might be breaching 1), as the universe may not have a fully benevolent god, or not have one that might make a pact.
This is something to suggest to a DM. I personally would allow it with some more knowledge on the details and shifts to fit a setting, but I canāt speak for all DMās.
Also, depending on the level, an adventuring level 1 rogue could be vastly overshadowed scale wise to someone whoās doing the bidding of a benevolent being and has made a pact with them.
Sometimes itās better to make a backstory once you have a dm who youāve spoken to about ya idea
Thatās generally what I recommend
My dm is letting me player a summoner n we both agreed for my backstory to be academic studies for the reason Iād even be on the adventure
"Researching to expand knowledge and find new discoveries" even if my guy is a extremely feisty unicorn lad lmao
It's supposed to reveal itself as a great old one (a slight reinterpretation of Yog-Sothoth. One which is still completely indifferent to life, but does care about reality being stable) by lvl 3. He sometimes asks (more commands) the PC to do some -what he would consider- "manual labor" to preserve reality. Not as in "save the world", but as in "this artifact has been relocated and might cause problems if unattended. Please retrieve it". I haven't really fleshed that part out yet, but I know that the struggle between my PC valuing life above all else and the Patron being completely indifferent to it, sometimes asking him to do things that would breach his moral code, was supposed to be a major character conflict. I'd need to think how I'd rework that.
Yeah, I guess this is going too far into specifics already. I'm just getting this storm of ideas right now, so I kind of wanted to get to writing. I don't know when I'd even get the chance to play.
You can still make the ideas and keep them on the back burn
The best thing is always be willing to "adapt and change" if needed
Yeah, I've heard DnD players all have a pile of characters just waiting to be played locked somewhere in the top drawer of their desk at all times ^^'
Mhmmm
If ya are truly dead set on a specific class/subclass itās def a thing to discuss once ya have a dm
can you grapple and prone a creature at the same time?
A creature can both be grappled and prone, ye
so you gotta use movement speed to stand up right?
Well, they canāt use movement because theyāre grappled and their speed is 0
so they are stuck in prone while grappled, so they cant get up.
i want to make a build using path of tyrannosaur barbarian and a battle axe with topple, and i wondered if it would be good.
Idk that subclass
That's homebrew, would fall under #homebrew
Locked in a drawer? Nah, I've got an entire folio stuffed with official and 3rd party pre-gens, sorted by class. Just waiting to be used at a moment's notice.
#dm-discussion can help out there!

i got lost on how to make your own character....
You choose a species, background and class, then determine your stats
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

anyone kno wut website and stuff in which to play dnd?
There's a few. Do you know your way around the rules yet?
How patient are people for helping making a character sheet I d&d beyond like someone helping me directly
Have you picked your class, species and background?
No not yet I haven't joined a game either I just.. are very nervous since I had help when I played my first DND so I don't know how patients people are..
Don't worry about that. What do you need to know?
Well how often do people have the rabbit race as a playable race
Not really got a useful answer for that, I'm afraid. Have you made a character before?
I have but somebody had to sit down and help me make it along with distributions stats and stuff like that
You'll find the vast majority of games are fine with any species in the Free Rules. Why don't we substitute halfling in there just for now, and do the rest?
i know some of the basics, like making a character, his backstory and stats and stuff and there beung a gamemaster and stuff

Quick builder it's a thing in d&d beyond that's awesome
which dnd is best, there 3.5, 4e, 2014 and 2024 and d6
The current version is 2024, also called 5.5e. It has the most players at present. Best is a matter of taste.
Yoo guys wsg
alr is try that first then
I might use quick builder and I'm going to be playing as a dragonborn I love dragons I'm glad they're free
What class are you thinking of?
i made a backstory where my character is half human and half dragonoid
dragonbond*
born**
is that possible or does it have to be one or the other?
i googled it and apparently i can make half
with one parent being human and the other dragonborn
You'll only be able to put one species on you sheet, but you have some freedom for how you describe your character.
Whats a variant human guys?
can i put dragonborn and then descrive it as being half dragonborn
Like a human, but a little different. In 2014 they get a different boost to their ability scores and can take a feat to reflect what's special about them.
Ohhhh
i actually made an oc and when i checked online, it suggested that variant human is a good class
It's a race, not a class. A class is like your job.
ohhh my bad
i got confused. my class is a rouge
also can my oc work, basically in his backstory he is in the sense cursed, and basically he cant use magic or magic based attacks
Sure! You'll be restricting your options down the road and it won't have any benefits, but it could be something interesting to explore if they wanted to get the curse broken.
I made my character very simple with quick builder
You picked a class then?
I would recommend finding a group first - and then creating a character. As whichever group you might end up with, might have some restrictions when it comes to classes, species and other factors. You might create a character beforehand, but end up having to recreate it due to the specific restrictions or directions by the Dungeon Master
I see. so like in the backstory i basically made it so that my char is poisoned or cursed in battle, which makes it so that he lost his ability to use magic, however in exchange i am trying to buff his str and dex stats up by using variant human
can i do that?
Best to get practice with the method first. If they have to rebuild later, they'll know how to do it.
Very much depends on whether the game/campaign/story can fit this direction. Best to discuss it beforehand with the Dungeon Master
You can certainly say that's why their ability scores are that way around, yes.
The curse would have to be worked out with your DM. Also make sure youāre ok to use Variant Human, which is a 2014 5e option
That is true I just want to be able to make a character without asking for help with somebody sitting over voice with me because I just feel like I'm wasting somebody's time asking them to help sit along with me with making stats and stuff and also I just need to make sure I pay attention to when people use d&d beyond since I'm bad at drawing and writing
If youāre playing 2024 5.5e then Variant Human will be replaced by the standard 2024 Human which doesnāt come with ability score increases
I like RP more than fighting because it builds the world and develops friendships that can be really awesome
Donāt worry about wasting peopleās time, this channel is specifically for helping newbies out š
That is true I think it's just me getting over the trauma I had with my first experience in d&d which is why I'm so hesitant
Great. thanks man
Thanks for the helping tips I deeply appreciate it
is Owlbear like roll20?
Yup, Owlbear Rodeo is a Virtual Table Top program (VTT), just like Roll20 is.
okey good too know
Hi, long time lurker, first time typer, I've always wanted to play but I've never really had the opportunity, does anyone from the UK know of a good way into playing, please?
Here's the required reading for learning the basics; r/lfg listed below tends to have more european games posted there I feel; though you do see thme here as well; be diligent checking and you should have a table within a week or two

Quick question so could I just use my d&d beyond for most of my character sheet in most DMs be okay with it if they're not advertising DND beyond in the looking for group
You'd have to ask the DM about what they allow at their games - but I doubt many folks would say no to D&DBeyond character sheets.
That's good to know because I would struggle writing on paper along with how easy it is to use for people like me
Another question how likely is it to get into a DM's game in the first place if there's a lot of people applying?
On the internet? It's quite random. Some folks find a game within the week, some take weeks, some take months.
If you had a groups of folks in real life (or online) that you already knew and were interested in playing... well that greatly increases your chances.
some folks get super lucky and get into a D&D game they day they start looking
That's awesome I just got to get over my fear join a d&d game I just don't know where to start cuz there's so many options
Look through game posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community (or even #paid-looking-for-game if you're okay paying for a spot at a D&D game).
If you find one you like, message the game poster or use the thread attached to the LFG game post and express your interest.
okey thanks!
Hello, I was invited to play DnD with some friends and Iām trying to learn the rules. They told me to create whatever character I want, so Iām wanting to make a duergar rune knight so I can make myself huge in combat. I want to use a maul one handed and wield a tower shield or dual wield the mauls, depending on the situation. Since mauls require two hands, Iāll be using it as an improvised weapon, dealing 1D4 damage, losing my proficiency bonus and attacking with disadvantage right?
I'd recomend just using a Warhammer and flavoring it to be a maul
It will be 1d20 + Strength mod to hit, 1d4+ Strength mod damage. You won't have disadvantage unless your Strength score is less than 13
And yeah use a reflavored warhammer instead. Ditto for the tower shield, use a regular shield and flavor it as a tower shield since the latter isn't an official item
that way you're not heavily handycapping yourself in combat
What are the rules for flavoring things?
you can describe things however you want so long as they use official mechanics and people can follow what you're doing
as the saying goes; "Flavor is free."
also, here's the new player resources just in case
Read the information in 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers or check out the resources in #learn-to-play ; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Iām not concerned about doing damage plus when I make myself huge, swing a hammer is the least impactful thing I can think of doing
the issue is, it throws off encounter balance for your DM if a player is not performing at the normal expected level for their class/character level
so it's best to keep to weapons you're proficient in, being used in a way that allows you to do the proper amount of damage; and then flavoring things to your liking using those stat blocks
The party has a cleric archer and sorcerer, Iām more focused on looking crazy threatening and area denial while they defeat things, theoretically, we havenāt played yet
Also, where can I find the specific rules for grappling creatures smaller than me?
So having advantage on str checks doesnāt help me grapple?
not in 5.5e(2024)
it used to in the 5e(2014) ruleset
And I get no benefit for being two size categories larger? Thatās a bummer.
grappling is better in 5.5e though due to being able to do it as an Opportunity Attack, as part of the Unarmed Strike Attack, changes to the Grappler Feat, and the addition of the Street Justice Feat
Being bigger lets you grapple bigger things; You can grapple things up to 1 size catagory larger than you
So if you're Medium, you can grapple Large Creatures
Large grapples Huge
Huge grapples Gargantuan (ie, anything)
So can I just not use a weapon, have a shield in one hand and grapple or shove every turn while my size is huge while the rest of the party does damage?
You need to be doing damage
you might want to look into monk instead if you want to primarially grapple things
they can have 2 enemies grappled at a time and still attack c:
they're also very fast and get a lot of attacks off per turn
I want to be the party tank, my damage is going to be a fraction of the wizards, so why not just protect the wizard though?
because "tanking" isn' a thing in dnd
if you're not a threat; enemies will just ignore you and move to attack your backrow
Hence why I want to be huge
a lot of enemies are smart; they understand a wizard is mroe of a threat than a fighter with no wepaon
Medium and smaller creatues can move through the space of a hostile huge creature
My understanding is enemies canāt move through my space
So my intention would be more effective as a duergar monk instead of rune knight. If Iām only 1 size category larger, nobody is moving through me?
Are monks sturdier than someone in full plate with a shield?
you're also able to repostion much faster, are still very tanky even without a shield/armor, and can still do damage that way
they have much better saves later on, have good AC due to Unarmored Defence, and can do things like deflect and redirect attacks or stun enemies so they can't attack in the first place
and if you take Grappler and Street Justice as feats, you can give your entire party advantage on attack rolls against creatures you have grappled c:
Thatās so much better than just attacking something
So I would be keeping my party from taking damage, and helping them do more damage?
remember, Unarmed Attacks don't require you have an open hand; you can grapple two things and still be able to kick the crap out of them
and while things are grappled, they have disadvantage on attacking anyone other than you
Street Justice also makes it easier to Intimdate enemies as well, literally, in a mechanical sense
Are monks common among duergar or will it be awkward when RPing?
Any species can be any class; shouldn't be an issue
Ok, thanks for your time and the advice, sorry if my questions were ill-informed š
it's all good, it's why we're here XD
feel free to post in here whenever you have questions

Can someone explain what "hit die" mean exactly? for some reason I don't quite get it
Ah you see whenever you level up in a class you roll your hit die, which is mentioned in the class description and add the result + your constitution modifier to your hp
So what does "expend a hit die" or whatever mean?
Ah right, hit dies are also a resource, whenever you take a short rest you may choose to expend hit dies and roll them to regain the same amount of health as the result. You have as many hit dies as your character level
So you only have 1 hit die at level 1 and so on
but if I have 1 hit die, then I short rest--then I get to level2, does that give me 2 die?

I recommend reading through some of the intro links above to get oriented. Mage can mean different things in d&d, as there are multiple classes that can cast magic. Most fitting would probably be sorcerer or wizard.
This server isn't exactly for a campaign, this is essentially just one big forum for discussing DND and its aspects. There are LFG channels.
As also said, "Mage" isn't quite precise, there are many many different options for magic usage in multiple degrees, styles, and roles.
Hey guys, Im new to DND and this server. id love to join or start my first campaign. whats a good place to start?
Also very new to the game and just joined! Mainly here to share and appreciate other members art and getting inspired by it
If you haven't already I'd recommend reading the first few chapters of the free rules on ddb, you can find a link in #learn-to-play , it'll explain playing the game and character creation (and maybe create a practice character as well), and once you've done that take a look at the #find-a-game channels
Hi, Iām new here and new to DnD. Any tips on finding online groups in my timezone?
Hi everyone I am new as well. How long does a campaign usually run?
Can be all the way from a couple of sessions to hundreds of sessions!
Something like lost mines of phandelver runs maybe 10-20 or so
Assuming 3 hour sessions
Wow, sounds fun!
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Worry less about the timezone itself, just look for groups that play when you can. Doesn't matter if it's morning for you and evening for them as long as you can get together.
You could also try looking for regional RPG servers, forums or subreddits.
Thanks for the advice!

Hello, so im pretty new to dnd, ive been playing my first ever campaign and its going great, really enjoying it. I've had this idea for a character idea for some time, but I don't really know how to put it in practice. Basically it's a badly disfigured person, burn marks or cut marks, something like that, from childhood, bullied and ostrocised because of it. Grew up to be a killer that has the ability to wear the faces of dead people as long as they are in good condition, allowing them to sort of copy their abilities for a few rounds, before the magic disappears. Anyone know of a race or anything like that that'd make this possible?
Copying abilities isn't really a thing in D&D, so far as I'm aware. You can describe existing abilities that way, but you're going to run into hard limits.
In DnD, you don't really build characters from the abilities up. Instead, you choose a class/species/background and then gain the abilities that those options give you. So rather than picking an ability and trying to see how best to replicate it, I'd recommend taking a look at what the classes can do and then trying to determine a fun character based on that class.
That being said... Check out Whispers Bard! It's an older, underrated subclass that can temporarily steal the appearance of killed foes... but not until a much higher level.
thank you!! ill check that out and try looking over some races
Whisper Bard changeling is about the closest I can think of. Though as people have said, you don't really steal abilities (and neither is part of the few options in the basic rules)
am i allowed to hold a book or wand as a cleric and make that my focusing item to replace material components and hand movements
also is this the right channel for such a question
Books and Wands aren't focus options for Clerics. Cleric can use the following things as a focus:
- Component Pouch
- Emblem
- Amulet
- Reliquary
If you're using a focus, you can ignore most material component for your spells.
alright thanks
Hello! Iām extremely new to DnD, trying to just figure out how the game works ! Iām right now trying to build my first character and originally I wanted to be a monk, however I noticed thereās a bit of hesitation when it comes to the class, is there a reason for this Iām very confused , should I not use this class as my very first character or for my first game ?
on dndbeyond i can only become a draconic sorcerer at lv 3 right?
and that means my AC becomes 13 + dex which is the same as mage armor (13+dex) so i should remove mage armor from my spells once i become lv 3 right?
Monk has a bit more mechanics than some of the other martials, but I don't think it's anything that can't be learned! Can you elaborate on the hesitation you mention?
A focus means that you don't have to carry material components (like grasshoppers or a a ball of cotton or other trinkets) except those with a cost (like a 100gp pearl) or those who are consumed on casting, I might add
Just seen some posts about it being a complicated class, or it practically being useless and very similar to other classes that are better!
Monk is considered one of the harder classes, while you can play a monk as your first character, most generally don't
You're probably seeing older conversations. A lot of folks feel the new monk (as of 2024) has gotten a much-needed coat of polish!
Also, I wouldn't consider monk that difficult, but it depends on what you find difficult. You have one resource to manage, but you don't make a lot of choices within the class.
so as long as i use a grimoire (custom item ig) as my cleric's focus only for scenarios you mentioned, it's essentially the same as using a reliquary\amulet\component pouch etc right?
Yes, also, some items specify you can use them as a Focus (if it doesn't consider adding it to your custom item), many magic items like grimoires or staffs allow to you use it as a focus
Ohhh that makes sense, I just donāt wanna completely jump into something thatās too far beyond my skill level lol! I still might do it because itās cool!
Thank you ā¤ļø
am i right with this assumption?
hello, i have a question. this is my first time getting involved with dnd, and me and my cousins want to play together (4 of us) but we don't have a DM or any knowledge of how to play. i'm willing to learn, but any advice would be appreciated. i apologize if this is repetitive, but i'm trying to watch a few intro videos and also see what edition to start with first
That calculation is correct, yes. After level 3, you won't need Mage Armor anymore, yes.
@fading axle I love your username and like your entire vibe !!
thank u hehe ā¤ļø
got it,thank u
Welcome! Were you hoping to find a DM online, or hoping to learn how to DM yourself?
The rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) have the key info for both players and DMs. You can also check #learn-to-play if you haven't already.
@fading axle ofc <33
id like to learn to dm myself...? preferably!
thank u so much!! ill do that rn!
Then follow this post!
i was basically asking if i could make a custom item a focus as long as it's only different in name (i.e it'll function the exact same way as a normal focus a cleric uses but it will be named Grimoire)
Once you've got a more solid understanding of how the rules work and the game runs, we can help with more DM specific questions
My quick version of DMing:
-
Learn the game rules, at least broadlyāas has been mentioned!
-
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do someāemphasis someāreading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!
-
Don't feel like you have to memorize everything to get going. Jump in, make mistakes, learn from them, and seek feedback!
That's unfortunately a question for your DM. I think most would be okay with it, but there's never any guarantee!
Ask your Dungeon Master, but you wanting to have a custom Focus is such a minor thing to ask I don't see anyone denying you that
A reliquary set into the front cover of a prayer book, perhaps?
alright,thanks all of u
awesome!!! im trying to see does it matter which edition we start with or should we go with a pre written adventure if its our first time?
chromatic orb requires a 50gp diamond right, can i just buy it at the first shop we encounter in my adventure or just request my dm to have it in my starting inventory ,unless it's too strong to be in my starting?
You'll probably want to go with 5e/2014 or 5.5e/2024. 5e/2014 has the most content, but 5.5e/2024 is what will be used going forward.
And I think a prewritten is a good idea for a first time. Any of the starter sets would work. Specifically, the latest one (Heroes of the Borderlands) is supposed to be a very good entry point for new folks!
ok!! ill check that out, tysm
Happy adventuring!
Personally if you've got the starting cash available to afford it, I'd let that be in your starting kit. You may have to take the gold option and work out your equipment rather than taking a starter package.
Another thing to ask your DM. Some will allow you to "prepurchase" it before the adventure begins, others will require you to buy it in game.
hey guys
does prepurchase mean i should start with less gold than my teammates who haven't prepurchased anything
seems fair that way
alright I'll do that,i like the sound of gamba orb
So say you're a sorcerer with the acolyte background, you could ignore the equipment from acolyte, take the gold, say that's a 50 gp diamond. Done.
Most DMs would be okay with that, yeah. Still important to check with your DM before locking it in, though.
yes ofc, I'll ask him and mention that I'm taking a gold penalty so it doesn't seem like I'm starting out ahead unfairly
"Can I take a gold penalty and start with this item?" not "I am taking a gold penalty to start with this item."
oh that way ,got it
sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is the difference between the 5th edition and like a starter set? is heroes of borderlands a part of the 5th edition or is it something separate altogether
Heroes of the Borderlands is for 5.5e/2024, which is an update to the 5e/2014 rules. They have enough differences that I'd recommend against mixing and matching, at least for now as you get your feet under you.
Heroes of the Borderlands is, in my opinion, the safest starting set for future-proofing your gameplay experience
does it matter which character sheet i use?
A character sheet is just reference for the DM and the player. As long as both can find all the information they'll need on the sheet, it doesn't matter what the sheet looks like

thank you!
I played DnD last year with my uncles and my dad
So i have a character sheet that is very good but i dont know if i can use it on here
The only person who can confirm your character sheet in the end is the DM of your next campaign.
However, in 99% of games, you'll probably be expected to make a whole new character for that game. You don't usually take a character from a previous game and use them in a new one.
Ok thank you for letting me know
you got cool uncles and dads, lucky
I only have 1 dad anyway and uncles yeah theyre cool
Its ok

is the an important difference between making a character on dndbeyond and roll20
or like noticeable difference
It's mostly style from what I remember. Both will only give you access to the free options by default and they don't cross, so people often end up just building characters wherever they've bought content
Roll20 is mostly useful for character sheets if you actually play with roll20
oh got it ,tnx
From my knowledge Beyond is far more popular for characters
I would say it's probably used more because there's no reason to build characters on roll20 if you're not playing on roll20
While Beyond has the app and options to integrate with a few VTTs
Though I actually prefer the roll20 sheets for quick manual entry over DDB
Iāve heard of the war forged, but I had come to the assumption that they were primarily made of metal, meanwhile the race that I was thinking of was more in line with porcelain/clay
The difference in game terms is immaterial. The saying around these parts is "flavour is free." As long as the rules don't change, you can often alter a description to suit your vision.
Hm⦠true, true
Hold up. I sent you something so I donāt have to flood the chat
You'll be wanting the #homebrew channel to try and get those ideas into game concepts.
Oh uhm okay. Iāll just screenshot the messages and synopsis I sent to you
it is generally advisable to have the next level of your character prepared in advance right? like if I'm level 6,i should have lv 7 prepared in case i level up this upcoming session?
As with everything thinking ahead saves time, you don't have to make an entire spreadsheet though x)
Nothing wrong with preparing for the future. Hard to say advisable. But definitely not a bad idea.
what would the alternative be? the dm waits mid session while everyone chooses their new spells, what to replace ,their feats, etc?
It's not very common for a party to level up in the middle of a session, based on my experience.
I usually only ever levelup at the end of a session, and then we get the rest of week until next session to think about it :")
But leveling up takes such a long time that you'll have plenty of time to consider what to get next level
Hey guys, if I have blind fighting, would that ignore mirror image?
read mirror image spell descript
and yes you do ignore it
*A creature is unaffected by this spell if it can't see, if it relies on senses other than sight, such as blindsight, or if it can perceive illusions as false, as with truesight. *
technically if you blind yourself that also works x)
Yea like Dosh said. Leveling mid session is pretty uncommon. Usually when it does happen it's cause the DM has a boss ready for you and is prepared for the players to take their sweet time choosing stuff.
But again absolutely nothing wrong with having the next lvl prepared. I wouldn't do more than 1 level though
There's nothing wrong with having a plan.
Even just a general idea is more than enough. "I'm probably gonna pick... Acid Arrow or Dragon Breath next level."
Hello. Does anyone know where I can make my first character. And if a person experienced with it would help me. I've got a concept in mind but idk if it would be fair so I need to give it a few debuffs and idk how to arrange the stats

Ok!
@wild onyx
If I want high constitution and strength. What should I decrease
Depends on what class you're going for. High Strength and Con could be a fighter or paladin using heavy armour, and they can afford to have lower Dexterity. If it's a barbarian, they need Dex for their Armour Class so might relax on their mental attributes.
Dwarf barbarian
there are a whole lot of official pre-generated pdfs of characters for 5e. there are a few official ones for 5.5e too.
I know but I wanna atleast try and make a character first because I think it's a good idea
Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma don't tend to be much help for barbarians.
It's good to learn the process.

For learning, I'd always recommend the Standard Array method for your ability scores. Learn why each is or isn't important for your class. You might switch some around depending on the background you pick (even numbers are key).
its a very good process that helps you to understand where the numbers come from and what they impact. i did myself a great disservice when i used auto calculating and automated stuff to make characters. learning 5e didn't sink in until i manually sat down with the book and a pencil and blank character sheets and went through building four full characters. then i had the ah-ha moments.
Have you decided on background yet?
Yes but not fully acceptable. Because it gives me an advantage which I haven't thought up a fair debuff yet
The advantage is gonna be +2 when I intimidate someone
If that's even alowwed
as for "advantage", that usually means rolling a d20 twice, and using the higher number
+2 to Intimidation would just be Intimidation proficiency.
So soldier?
Sure, if you like. The bonus ability points it gives are often useful for fighting types.
You've made your own choices, go with standard and fill them in.
Nvm. I did standard ty for the help tho
you can go back later and fix things. its not written in stone. i know everyone is afraid of making mistakes, but its okay. this game is fairly fault tolerant and the DM and players can agree to roll something back if something really goes awry.
Ok and ty too you to for the help š
oh man i cant wait to make my character
There's plenty of fun to be had!
Here's some tips for putting together your first character:
- Keep it simple and vague! You can work with your DM to nail down the specifics later.
- Your abilities come from your species/background/class. You can't do something unless you have a feature that gives you that power.
- Mix and match! Any species can be any class! Pick what sounds fun to you.
im a bit short on time now so tomorrow im gonna start, thx for the good tips!
Help I need help how do classes work!!!
It's like a job. It gives you a set of features that let you do stuff, like use armour, weapons and possibly spells. Most also have special moves, like a cleric can channel divinity for effects, a paladin can do lay on hands for healing, and all the nonsense warlocks get up to.
Would you like any more specific advice?
Can I make my own class or weapons and ect.
Yes, that's called homebrewing but typically it's advised to make a character and play with the currently published materials to reduce complexity for new players
Ohhhhhh ok thx š
Not as a starting option, I'm afraid. What kind of capabilities did you have in mind?
I was planning on making a ruins set
What's that?
Basically ancient stuff yeah ancient stuff with dark magic like necromancy I guess
Start with wizard.
Oki
Wspg.
I changed my role š
Hello!
how yall doin
Super! What's on your mind?
nothing really just decided to finally join main dnd server after a while
since my friend dragged me into dnd like 2-3 years ago I been loving it
Yerr
Nice. Well, welcome aboard, check out the #channel-guide to get your bearings, feel free to jump into any chats or ask questions.
thank you
How do campaigns work?
wdym exactly?
When I hear about dnd I always hear something about campaigns or something
well campaigns are basically a story that a dm is leading
the dm (dungeon master) is basically the story teller, they shape the world and etc, make it interactable
And the campaign is basically the story mode in a game to make it easily imaginable
dw about it
tho all my sessions with my friends only been homebrew since we began playing they are very dope
so I do not know what it's like to play a preset campaign
Thing is I haven't played dnd I've heard of it so I decided why not try it
well good luck man!
It's very good if you can get into it
I do recommend trying to get your friends into it because that's the easiest start rlly.
Hey guys, I'm new here
I want to play my first ever Dnd where do I start

oh well thanks for the help smith
General advice on getting started: skim the first couple of sections in the free rules, get a handle on the language. Use the video guides if you like.
Then pick a class, species and background from the options there and come back here to ask for any help putting it all together.
Oki doki Thank you
Get to grips with how to put a character together, and you're most of the way to getting started.
Can I make a character even if I suck at art
Oh dw about that creating a character is mostly simple
Yes. Art is optional. Lots of stock images available, there's Picrew, there's video games.
Oh ok thx
Welp i been thinking about finally starting up as a dm but im afraid i will end up as a forever dm like my friend
The trick to not becoming a forever DM is to refuse to run periodically
Either someone else will step up or they won't, but at least you'll get a break
Not a bad idea
Pass the hat. Look up the Five Room Dungeon method and share it. Get your gang to take turns doing one-shot single session adventures.
I mean he been able to keep being our dm for like 3 years now it cant be that hard RIIIGHT
Not super hard, but good to change it up now and then.
I don't think DMing is that hard personally. It's a skill like any other. But burnout is real
I will end up as a mental asylum patient GGs
Eh I will probably ask him about it really
My friend also been cooking up a homebrew too so like probably after that
I wish theyre was a witch class cuz I made a character that is a witch
Depending on what exactly you want to do like a witch, plenty of classes could work
Warlocks can have kind of a witch vibe
Sorcerer or Wizard is just straigt up magic
Druid for a more nature focused witching
What does "witch" mean to you, exactly?
Oo yeah druids i kinda forgor they even exist
I was thinking potions and a spell book
Alchemist Artificer has potions, and Wizards and Pact of the Tome warlocks get a spell book (though you could always just have a book on anyone, even if not mechanically necessary. Could even flavor your arcane focus as a book)
Can I share the character so you guys can see what I mean
Sure man happy to help
ivy
|the witch
Appearance:a humanoid black cat with a witchs outfit
Perks
1.sneaky
2.brewing since birth
3.agility advantage
Weapons
1.weak spell book
2.potions
Black cat: Tabaxi
- You could just get stealth proficiency
- Again, alchemist, or ask DM about crafting rules for making potions yourself
- Do you mean acrobatics? Again you could just get proficiency in that
Spell book: Not usually a weapon, again you could flavor your arcane focus as one (Basically describe something as appearing as something else, without mechanical changes)
Idk what to say but here is what I think in short:
for a begining is all good I think you can easily turn it into a fun little character dont forget to give them a backstory and also try to flesh out your character dont worry if you feel like its not good every time you play you will get the hang of it about the potions and everything sara above me explained it quite good
(Srry for long reply I cant write on phone properly)
Though just wanna mention in D&D you generally pick from options to build your character. If you come into the game with a specific idea for a character without knowledge of the game, you're unlikely to be able to make exactly what you want with exact combination of abilities due to the limitations of the classes / races, etc.
That is true also
I recommend first taking everything you want to do into a note and than check rules races classes and etc and draw the entire character out from there
And than you can slowly put it into a character sheet
So um, I am on the newer side of dnd and I know a bit from watching YouTubers but I was wondering how would I do a one shot campaign as the DM? I want to do a one shot for my first actual DM campaign and I want to lean towards the more roleplaying side, and I tend to over explain text things that make it seem like I'm trying to write a novel or a book
Maybe check out the premade oneshots on ddb, I believe a couple of them are free
Okay thank you
By definition, a witch is a female warlock, so there's that? In practice, you're probably looking for something more akin to a sorcerer.
I have a question
Need to ask it to get an answer š
How do I use the command for #looking-for-players
Type /looking-for right here or in #find-a-game and select one of the options that best fits what kind of LFG post you want to make - e.g. if you're a player wanting to tell people you're looking for a game, select the dm option as you're "looking for a dm".
That will trigger the bot to give you a form to fill out.
Fill it out and hit submit and the bot creates the post in the correct channel
Im a new DM and I'm looking for players
Then pick the players option
Okay
See #find-a-game as it has the info and instructions for how to use our LFG channels.
The bot will also attach a thread to your LFG post - use the thread to make updates, corrections, clarifications, and chat with interested folks.
After 7 days, the bot will automatically remove your post and reset your LFG timer so you can repost.
not sure if you have access to it, since its in Candlekeep Mysteries, but you can run The Joy of Extradimensional Space as an isolated one-shot. it is contained to one location, lots of role play and exploration, some combat but its at level 1, a few puzzles, and the whole thing runs like an escape room.
I can look into it, thank you
There are also a fair amount of free one shots available on DMsGuild or D&D Beyond
what do i do
What are you trying to do?
If you want to learn to play, the basic rules are a good starting point
Iām new and have some questions
I hope this isnāt too frowned on, but Iāll jump right in.
Questions are good. We can't answer if you don't ask. Though if you have a lot, you might want to do a few at a time
Discord isn't great with walls of text
Iām a father of three and just talking about what I know or think I know about dnd has got the family interested in trying it. But I think Iām totally intimidated by learning all the rules or whatever it takes to dungeon master a game. Also the family probably need a lot of help to get thru all the rules.
My wife also likes the idea of playing in the living room on couches or in the car on long car ride.
Iāve heard of AI dungeon master type tools where you have an AI help you through it.
I know thatās probably an abhorrent thought to purists, but Iām trying to get started with low entry requirement and all the help we can get. Iām sure if we love it we might want to get in deeper or play it more traditionally.
Does anyone have tips if there is a program or app that could be our dungeon master and character builder helper and rule keeper?
Is there a way to play like this that would be off the phone or laptop and we could play comfortably from the living room and the car.
And if all of these ideas sound bad, can you suggest something that is better but that wonāt scare off me or my family from even trying it?
Too late
The problem with using AI for d&d is that it tends to get the rules wrong
I donāt quite understand what DnD is, all I know itās roleplaying?
Not can AI really be a proper Dungeons Master due to the amount of improvisation and roleplay required for a good one
I would hope a purpose built ai program could at least do a better job than an uninitiated person.
I'm not aware of any purpose built AI programs
And even if there was, I honestly don't think so. DMing isn't just doing things in a set sequence
It's a game where people play through a story together, using abilities and roleplay to try to do things and dice to see if they succeed
That said, there are websites like D&D Beyond that can help you build characters and offer adventures that you can run instead of making up your own. Plus online dice rollers. So it would definitely be possible to play in your living room and maybe in your car with some work
Okay!! ^^
So RPG but you use your imagination?
RPG but a bit more freeform and there are dice
Youāre not saying that just because youāre a purist, but because you donāt think ai is there yet?
Iāll do a little more research, but my googling for the last half hour hasnāt said otherwise. I guess LLM AI just canāt keep track of memory or say donāt know or follow rules, and it constantly messes up and you basically need to be a DM to keep it honest.
Basically.
Instead of being pre-scripted, where every asset had to be handmade and planned for, in a videogame - like in Baldur's Gate 3, you can't just do anything, there's only so much that writers and developers can even think of to predict and then implement the resulting things.
A DM can just say something like, i dunno, "The city is bustling in the middle of the day, until it's somewhat disturbed by a flash of light erupting from the windows of the nearby library. The doors burst open and multicoloured iridescent smoke wisps out, and what seems like the head librarian stumbling out coughing."
It's just, they describe it with words, and so it is.
And then it's up to your character's reactions. Do they act cautious, wary of an attack happening? Are they quick to help people that seem in need? Do they help but try and find some way to benefit off of the scenario?
Instead of everything being pre-scripted, a lot of D&D comes from the DM describing the environment the characters come to, and anything going on. Then it's down to the players describing the reactions of their characters, the DM may describe reactions to those reactions, characters might be reacting to the reactions of other characters, and so on.
Whatās intimidating about that to me is how do rules get inplemented and how does one stay creative enough to keep track of whatās going on?
Like there has to be some guard rails on the mission right?
What if the librarian was the only way to know what to do next and you kill the librarian?
How does that quest continue or does it just end game over?
Hi Iāve never played dnd before but wanted to start getting into it so I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to play and stuff
This is where we come into "Make a character who is a functional person" AKA not murdering someone in broad daylight in the middle of the city.
But Iām playing with my daughters and they are chaos machines.
That's part of the improvisation side. If the party kills the librarian they were supposed to talk to, hey look there's suddenly another librarian
And yes there also is a bit of a social contract that we are all here to play a game together
As well as the fact that D&D often is best not prepared for with singular threads the story can be followed by, but instead multiple options the DM can pull up and use as needed, improvising to make sure the story is playable instead of missable.
Being a DM is often like wrangling cats in my experience, but it can help if the cats know the wrangling is part of the deal
Iām pretty sure Iām going to need a starter kit and the bumper rails up on my first outing.
Well, iron out consequences.
If they murder that librarian in broad daylight in the middle of the city street directly after some concerning event, the guards come up to where "the library exploded" and then see someone pulling a blade out of a dead person, the guards might just instantly go to apprehend the person who just murdered someone.
"It's what my character would do" is no excuse, as the person made the character that would do that.
I recommend starting with the free basic rules, which I can link you here in a sec

The heroes of the borderlands starter kit is typically seen as the best starter kit for tables just starting with dnd.
You recommend it 10/10 for 4 noobs and a noob DM?
I'd give it an 8/10 personally, but also don't have anything I'd rank higher unless you're willing to go study the rules first
We wanted to try to do something in the summer when school is out.
I want something that hooks us enough to keep going or understand if itās not for us but we gave it a fair shake.
Also, important thing for 5 newbies one of which being the DM
Make sure you all know about the concept of the "social contract"
you're trying to figure out how to play the game, how to run the game, how to extract fun out of the system
the DM shouldn't try to "win" against the players, the players shouldn't try to break the game or PVP, or even one-up other players too much (in an adversarial fashion, if they're both cool at the table level then that's fine)
I just find the quests a bit too freeform for my tastes. But it does give you pregens and basic explanations of the rules, which most of the low level adventures I like better don't. I ran it for my nephews over Christmas and it was fine. Had to do some improvisation but nothing too crazy
Theyāre all females and Iām a strong father figure. I think I could establish rules of cooperation. But Iām not sure what itās like to be DM. I just know Iām probably the one with the most nerd and technical gaming experience.
Show them examples of fantasy heroes and how they don't just randomly murder people just because. Like how in Lord of the Rings, the heroes don't stab the guy who lets them into Bree.
They love LOTR, willow, galaxy quest, Star Wars, and Iām even having them watch Star Trek TNG now.
I can tell them to create functional characters in society and donāt be dumb.
That's honestly a great start
I mean an alternative would be the lost mines of phandelver module. Those 2 are about as far as my limited knowledge for new table friendly content goes.
If you do get the starter set, I'd at least read over the booklets in advance to get an idea of things. Then you can also reference the free basic rules for things that seem unclear
I've heard decent things about Peril in Pine Brook too for very new players, but it's a short one off
I can read ahead of time. Iām just here to get encouragement enough that I can land the plane I take off in. Iām an engineer and mission without a plan is just a dream.
Oh you can definitely do it. Plenty of people have started D&D by DMing even if it's less common
The closest thing Iāve gotten to DM is I ran a few levels of heroās quest back in the day š
Get an idea of the quests, think of a few backup options in case the party balks at the default option and you'll be good to try
My wifeās brother runs a game shop with tabletop days. He might have some insight to help us with too.
Iāve liked playing gloomhaven, but Iām guessing DnD is pretty different.
Some people had to start D&D by DMing, otherwise nobody would have had a DM otherwise
but kobolds aren't part of the dnd class list right
kobolds are playable in 5e
a conversation i had,but i still can't find them on dndbeyond
what came first the dm or the player
(egg chicken joke)
They aren't part of the Playerās Handbook, as they are not a core species. That's likely why you don't see them
so does that mean u have to purchase them?
And no they're not part of the class list as they're a species and not a class
i did check in the species section
You'd have to buy the book they're in, the most recent appearance they made was within Mordekainen's Monsters of the multiverse
thanks

am i supposed to remove divine smite from my learned spells list as a paladin after i reach level 2
since it is automatically always learned from lv 2 onwards
if i read it correctly
sacred weapon make it so that you use charisma instead of strength right? because the description doesn't say instead
so I'm wondering if it's additive instead of replacing
It adds your charisma modifier to the attack roll on top of the normal ability score you already used. So yeah, it's additive.
Well, it's probably a good idea, yes, since it now does not count against the number of spells prepared. So at the end of a long rest, you could swap this one out for another paladin spell.
ohh it's additive
so that gives it a higher chance of hitting right
Yup
thanks
Note as well that it's very deliberate to say that it only adds to attack rolls, meaning it does not add to damage rolls.
Hii I'm DMing my first session, does anyone have any helpful tips that most videos won't get?? (I'm really nervous)
Don't overburden yourself trying to read cover to cover. Had a guy tell me you needed to for everything multiple times. Not needed. Just keep going in your session even if you think you're not performing well. Ask your players for honest critiques and focus on what they want instead of rote memory.
Btw are you new to playing or just being a DM
Both, actually
Thanks man :D
Stay hydrated!
Keep a drink you like by you
You will inevitably pick up specialized knowledge as you go. If a rule has you stumped come back to it later and don't spend too long looking it up unless it's absolutely necessary. Make an arbitration on the spot and keep the gas going
That's definitely one I haven't heard before lol
But thanks!!
Oh and one other thing. If a player has an issue make sure to have those difficult discussions sooner rather than later
Keeps your voice healthy, and helps avoid dehydration from being too immersed and forgetting to drink.
You basically gotta arbitrate a lot
Not sure if videos will cover this, but:
Prep scenarios, not a book
You donāt write a story, your players LIVE it
donāt give them a set solution (barring puzzles), but leave it open ended
Let the players create the solution
Yeah. I have a very problematic player that hasn't let us progress at all even though we've gone through like 3 sessions already
Thanks! I appreciate it :)
I'll make sure to keep it open ended
Hold up
Well is this a friend or someone you met recently
A friend, but not that close.
I don't mind him making jokes at all but it gets a little too far sometimes
Well rule 2 of DMāing, communication is key
Tell them to stop, seriously, and communicate how you feel
(Rule 1 is that DMās always reserve the right to say no/ have the final say on rulings, rule 0 is have fun)
So this is the thing stopping progress?
Yeah, we haven't got out of the tavern since we started lol
I have communicated it multiple times, and I did tell him today as well since we have a session planned. Hopefully it'll be better this time
If he doesn't stop I'll probably just mute him
Thatās more merciful than some I know
I understand it's probably uncomfortable to have to call someone out but set some time aside before the next session to explain your issue
Hopefully they understand they're hampering progress
I'll be sure to. Thanks!!
That sounds a little concerning š
To be fair, wasting enough time for three sessions to pass without leaving the starting tavern is enough for some to kick the player
Actually yeah you're low-key right
I just thought about it and id probably issue an ultimatum. Behave or kick
It may be the case where the individual in question sees it like just another group call or something not respecting time. But it's up to Naya to law down the law
I agree, hope it goes well for him
I guess I'll just see how it goes on from here
Hi, I'm making a campaign for me, my wife and our friend ( i am also the dm) and I'm looking for advice on how to play without a healer. My wife is a teifling warlock (haven't picked subclass yet) and friend is Dragonborn ranger, beastmaster. What class would best compliment these two? I thought about paladin but as the dm as well as a player I want an easy to manage character but without paladin we have no healer and no tank
Haloooooo i am new here i love to be an artificer
consumables, stuff like potions and healer's kits, be wary on over doing it though
Typically I recommend not playing as a PC and DMing simultaneously as it can make interactions awkward i.e. When talking to a NPC either your character or the NPC isn't gonna feel very smooth in conversation and the amount of features a PC usually has just puts too much on your plate. If you do truly think they need you to also be on the party, make a NPC stat block you adjust as they level up give it some tankiness and healing.
Healing is actually funnily enough not always the silver bullet. Downtime can be used to craft consumables as time consuming as it is. And by class do you mean another player may join or an NPC
Although again I would advise to avoid that and give them consumables as suggested above or magic items that are aimed at survivability
Ah nevermind they spelled out
Having a healer is kinda just a nice bonus, tbh I think havinf a healer healer is better if its a bigger party
Yeah DMPCs are difficult
I did one once. Didn't have a good time
Make them too strong and it's weird. Make them too weak and people ask questions
Yeah it's really hard to do properly so I always rather suggest having NPC companions at most
And there is the urge to lend too much of a helping hand with a DMPC
@cursive ridge Honestly any party comp works. Not having a PC with heals isn't a be all end all. Even clerics typically get one action a turn and can't do damage if they heal. It will be fine without healing
And greetings to you lovely artificer fan. I almost forgot to say
A good companion should be seen but not heard (unless directly addressed), capable but not overshadowing the party, and yet their own person enough to seem real in the world and not just a pack mule or healbot. Tight line to walk.
Thanks. Throwing potions what inspired me to become one hahaha
Make grenades. Your DM will like it. Trust me.
Since you need the DM to agree before doing that in the first place, I don't doubt they will
Ty and @finite wigeon for replying. I will me DM/PC but I've already told them my character will be there for basically combat and utility only. I won't have any input on decisions and my character is a mute lol
Yeah that can work, I recommend you just keep the actual player features to a minimum just so you can easily figure out what to do without too many hoops and features
Try not to worry about making mistakes; you will definitely make them. The keys are that the group (including you) still had fun and that you use them as a learning opportunity.
Also, you're allowed to stop the flow of things. "Guys, I think I need some time to figure this out. Can we take a short break so I can collect my thoughts on what happens in response?" Obviously you don't wanna be doing that too often, but it is a tool to consider using when needed!
What does 1d4-1 charges of a spell mean?
As in an item?
Iām going to try running my first game and in the oneshot instructions is a Modified Wand of True Polymorph. It says it is 1d4-1 charges of True Polymorph, minimum 1.
I am completely new to this. No idea what Iām doing. All Iāve managed to do is make a character on dnd beyond lol
Roll a d4. Subtract 1. That's how many times the wand can cast True Polymorph. If you roll a 1, there's still 1 charge since that's the minimum.
Thank you :D thought that was it, but I wanted to make sure it was subtraction and not a dash

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Thank you! I will definitely have questions
Energy Mastery. Choose one of the following damage types: Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder. Spells you cast ignore Resistance to damage of the chosen type. In addition, when you roll damage for a spell you cast that deals damage of that type, you can treat any 1 on a damage die as a 2.
which is the best type for my sorcerer.
i will probably be using chromatic orb a lot. i also don't know which is the best type in terms of dealing 2x damage to the most foes
Probably a better question for #character-discussion . But simply put, they're all more or less the same. Enemies almost never have vulnerabilities.
oh okay tnx
My problem is is that i have a hard time understanding the gameplay by reading. Iām better learning as i do it
This is fine
Unfortunately, you're likely going to have a hard time finding a game without understanding the basics of the rules first.
You absolutely will not absorb all the fine details if you're new
But yeah make an attempt to absorb the basics
I'd recommend taking a look at some videos that explain the rules, or watch some videos of people playing the game to get a better idea of how it works to help supplement your reading
There's plenty of recordings of people playing DnD, usually referred to as "DnD live play".
But you'll need to do some reading no matter what! DnD requires reading.
Oh right on the topic of lfg @manic echo not every group will be a fit but that's a worry for another time
Fire up YouTube for now
Already on it lol. Hopefully i can get a good understanding and join a campaign
i have a good solution.
you can download the lego campaign pdf for free. you can watch the actual play of that same campaign on youtube. you can follow along in the book to see what translates back and forth.
i can send you the links if you want
That would be great thank you
there, links to red dragon's tale, the youtube actual play, and additionally peril in pinebrook.
you'll notice that some stuff just gets completely made up in the actual play compared to the adventure book, that often happens.
I'd recognize Wild Sheep Chase anywhere š
LOL first DM game and I want to make sure I have a good understanding
It's a great one to start with, I just had the joy of running it myself a month ago.
Quick question for you: ||did the apes ever come into play?|| The wild sheep chase spoiler
They did. ||The first "fight" was completely bypassed through talking and ingenuity. The second area was an all-out brawl almost immediately from the start.||
Great, ||the first āfightā being with the half orc?|| The wild sheep chase spoiler
Yeah, just trying not to get into specifics due to spoilers š
Now now, folks, let's not discuss adventure spoilers for a beginner's module in the channel made specifically for beginners
Thank you for the insight, sorry
At minimum, you can put things in spoilers by putting two of | on either side
Iām a beginner myself here, I didnāt realize spoilers for oneshots were a thing necessarily but it makes a lot of sense
Yup! Especially when it's one of the most famous non-official starter one-shots š
Thatās why it was recommended to me most likely, makes sense
Hey howās it going
Heyyy
Nice to meet you!
Hi, guys ^^
Howdy everyone. Let us know if u have questions
Hello
suppose i make a character like this and send a link : https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/rocc19_165270970.pdf
how can i edit details on that and share the link with the new details?
i tried changing the name ,but when i refreshed it was back to the original
U can share a direct link to the dnd beyond sheet, not the pdf. Any changes u may will update if the person refreshes or they click the link again. It has to be set to public not campaign or private
U find that link in the same area where u generated the pdf link
So I just made my first character is there a place to import it to the server?
You can upload it to a site like Imgur or Google Docs and share the link, explaining what it is.
Oh ok so I use the shareable link right
where did you make it
That works too!
Dnd beyond
yea there should be a share pdf link option
Ohhh ty
There is a share ddb character sheet link option
K I got the pdf
yea that too
Good morning guys! I am actually quite new to D&D. I don't know much about it. I heard it's fantasy based and players can make parties to go on adventure quests. Since I love fantasy, I wanted to explore what D&D is about and how it's played š .

Does DnD have a lore, or do players have to make the lore?
Both
Official D&D books may express official lore but we are quick to say it's only as official as you want it/need it to be for your game.
But you can also create your own lore (and even change official D&D lore) for your own games
Hmm that's actually really nice. It gives players a lot of freedom and the chance to show creativity.
We have a #dnd-lore channel for folks that like diving into what official D&D sources have said about lore for a specific setting
Can you make a lore where you basically blend many cultures and genres together? Like for instance blending asian culture with European culture as well as blending ancient and modern themes together?
For example I playing in Eberron, an official setting created by Keith Baker. I mostly stick to the writers vision but I have changed the lore to fit the story I want to tell. Including a really big change. The lore is no one country won the previous war. In my game i selected a country who fully won said war.
Oh I see.
Piggy Backing on UndyingNoob's statement. Feel free to make your own world with your own lore or run an official setting as is or take it and make it your own!!
Unfortunately no. You can. However, go to #find-a-game to see who is doing games off server.
Just have some patience! Unless you're a DM you might not get requests right away.
Oh ok ok
As noted in our server rules we don't host games here. But as Taz helpfully pointed out we do have Looking For Game channels to help folks find a group/game to join.
Ok, one quick question. Do wizards unlock spells as they level up?
I mean a wizard character.
There is a book called Obajima: Tales From the Tall Grass that does a lot of that. Very Studio Gibli coded
Oh nice.
I will search it on internet.
?tag new wizard
Wizard
Study arcane magic and master spells for every purpose
Wizards are defined by their exhaustive study of magicās inner workings. They cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, and spectacular transformations. Their magic conjures monsters from other planes of existence, glimpses the future, or forms protective barriers. Their mightiest spells change one substance into another, call meteors from the sky, or open portals to other worlds.

I see. So what's the most beginner level spell that a wizard learns on his/her first quest?
hello so I have a question which player handbook do most people use 5e or 5.5e?
The latest is the 5.5 one - going forward, more and more D&D content will be designed around that
That said, folks still play older editions of D&D - even 1st edition!
ah okay thank you
Two spells per level. Cantrips used to be static but around six or so years ago this changed.
Or I should say you had what you chose in terms of cantrips now you can use a long rest to change them.
What's cantrip?
Spells which aren't leveled. Think like low powered ones you can cast at will without a spell slot.
Unlike leveled spells they can be cast more than once in a turn well if you get the opportunity.
Only if you have the right class features to do so
But yes, cantrips are the "can cast it whenever, don't have to worry about your spell slots"
Yes although Wizard+Monk is not a common multiclass
Oh I see
Yee. Some have bad synergy issues but at a base level you can MC any classes but you can only have 1 subclass per class. Cant mc wizard with wizard regardless if you try choosing a different subclass (I think lol)
D&D has multiclassing (MC) but it's not something we generally recommend for new to D&D folks as then you have to deal with complexity of learning more than one class at a time and all the rules for multiclassing.
Oh I see.
(First time player with a first time dm)
I messed up and didnt build my character around the gameworld, I think i missed the fact that its set in Ravnica so my backstory makes backwards amounts of sense. And its our DM's first time leading a campaign, its pretty obvious he didnt read our backstories aswell. Which is fine im not criticising there is a lot to do leading up to a first session I imagine, we're all new to this so will all make mistakes.
Is it strange to think about re-writing my backstory around this, I kind of already liked it so i don't want to make a new backstory for my now existing character, who's feat/class I built around it, but I want to make it easier for my dm to make hooks and stuff.
We're only 2 sessions in and not much background stuff about the pc's has come up yet, so it wouldnt be "retconning" from the other players perspectives, just mine and the dm.
Hey y'all im a new ish player (i've done 2 one shots) and a semi new DM. I just started a homebrew campaign im hoping to bring to some players here. I've run it a couple times at a DND 101 class at my local YMCA. Im hoping to learn as i go so im hoping to find people who will give me a bit of grace and possible help
Thatās something to consider, but Iād talk to your DM nonetheless

Uhm hi Iām completely new to dnd I just wanted to try the game out see if I like it
Lol, same! I completed BG3 earlier this year and loved it so much. I'm curious how D&D works.
I just find the fantasy setting interesting
Is it a good class ranger?
Yes

What does this mean exactly?
Tricksy. The fey can fill a 5-foot cube within 5 feet of it with magical darkness, which lasts until the end of its next turn.
What does the magical darkness do
It prevents anything from being able to see thru it unless you have an ability that says so
Devil sight for warlocks lets you see thru magical darkness
Also Truesight and Blindsight
only specifically blocks standard and darkvision
would anyone be able to content share on roll20 so i can create a character on there? idk if its the same like o dnd beyond or not but im running artificer and even that isnt on there so im gonna be doing alot of copy and pasting if i cant lol

ah okay my bad
Question from a dnd noob
Could anyone please let me know how the fighter classes weapons are supposed to be phrased? Iām really struggling with the āattacks and spell castingā part of my character sheet š
What are your level and stats?
Literally 1, i just started making my character sheet twenty minutes ago
Well you don't have spellcasting as a level 1 fighter, so no worries there. The only other way to have some is from your species, if the one you chose gives any magic.
Generally itās:
weapon, then your stat modifier + proficiency bonus, then your damage plus your stat bonus
Thank goodness, heās an elf so i think iāll be fine with spells
Thank u so much!!
For example, a level 1 fighter with a greatsword, with 16 strength.
Greatsword. +5. 2d6+3
There's the Unarmed Strike that everyone has access to
and then as a level 1 fighter you can check the starting equipment, and fill in stats as appropriate, like a flail does 1d8 bludgeoning damage (plus your Strength Modifier) on a hit, whereas a mace would do 1d6 (plus stuff)
+5 is from your strength modifier (16=+3), then +2 proficiency bonus
Thanks alot iāll do my best with u guyes advice ^^
So a level 1 fighter with 16 strength using a Flail, would be
+5 to hit (+2 prof, +3 Strength Modifier) and doing 1d8+3 bludgeoning damage on a hit (a flail does 1d8 bludgeoning damage, add your Strength modifier of +3)
If ya got any more questions feel free to ask, anyways happy adventuring!
how do i find out what a creature resists
suppose i rolled a 1d8 and i get 6 ,is the dm supposed to say the spell hits but he takes 3 damage as he resists it?
The attack roll must meet (equal) or beat (be higher than) the target armor class
If it's a spell that requires a saving throw, the target must make a saving throw roll (D20 test plus their saving throw bonus for that ability). If the target suceeds, they typically reduce damage by half (rounded down) and are not effected by any other effects of the spell. If they fail, they take full damage and the resulting spell effects.
An attack roll is a d20 + ability modifier (strength for melee weapons typically, dexterity for ranged weapons) + proficiency bonus (if proficient)
Yeah thatās often how it does.
āThey take 6 bludgeoning damage.ā
āThey have resistance to bludgeoning, so thatāll be 3 damageā
You can replace bludgeoning with any damage type
ah got it thanks

Heeeeeeeeeeeeey random question, when you're doing the manual/rolled way of getting ability scores on dndbeyond, how do I reroll 1's?
I don't think that's a thing it can do. I'd use the manual dice roller or a normal die to reroll the 1
Whats better roll20 or dnd beyond
Better at what?
Roll20 is definitely better for maps and tokens
For character creation and maps
Roll20's charactermancer is in my experience abit buggy at times, though I haven't used Beyond, so the latter might work better for that
But roll20 definitely does maps better from what I've seen. Lot of control over sheets, tokens and the maps themselves
So comes down to preference, really
Alr thx
roll20, and it's not close
Roll20 allows you to add whatever you want to your Sheet manually, and modify abilities etc. etc.
Roll20 for sure
Alr thank you
Afaik your character on roll20 is bound to a campaign though unless you have a subscription, so it's not as universally accessible as the one on DDBeyond.
Maybe they changed it since I used it, but that was one of my many gripes with roll20
Hello š Total noob joined. My firends and me wanna start playing the game. Now the debate is playing steam tabletop simulator, or over discord with this avrae, as we are located somewhere else, what are your experience playing DnD online and what works for beginners best ?
So that doesn't require a subscription? And can you roll inside of the vault?
No to both
well so it hasn't changed, okay
but you can make a Campaign Server for free and transfer them into there
you just have to delete them from that server if you wanna be able to transfer them to another server
Owlbear Rodeo is a good starting point!
it's limited that way in the free version
Hi š I'm starting my DnD journey. Always wanted to check it out. But life always got in the way. But now I really want to experience it and become a part of the community. Thanks this has been my ted talk
I wanna get into watching critical role or dimension 20, but I dont know where to start, any advice?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Thank you. Will do
I actually bought the handbook, monster guide already should be in the mail today
Hmm, as a purely personal opinion, I think the easiest way to start Critical Role is from Campaign 2 Episode 1.
I'm sure the folks over in a different channel can offer some additional recommendations.
The Dimension 20 games are standalone as often as not, so pick one that you dig the premise/aesthetic of. For CR, Campaign 2 is one of the most popular, but it is a hefty investment of time. The animated Mighty Nein series is a good way to get the story in a fraction of the hours if you're not set on watching them playing at the table.
In your opinion, where is the best place for me to find a group for a quick campaign. Quick as in 1-5 sessions
Nvm @harsh fjord's bio pretty much covers my question
Hello š
I've always been interested in D&D but I never had the people or community to play it with. I have the tiniest bit of experience from a very tiny "campaign" my brother did with me where I was the only player, and with games such as the baldur's gate trilogy and neverwinter nights, if those even count
Welcome to the server. Are you looking to learn the game better? Then check #learn-to-play. If you're looking for a group, read #find-a-game.
Here's the recomended reading on learning the game if you need a referesher; as well as finding a table c:
Ok Iām gonna straight up ask,
Running my first Campaign, and I have it designed out but A, Iād like to ask more experienced people for advice, and also maybe some players in the future
#dm-discussion can help with dming questions; #dm-world-building can help with designing the setting and such
Thank you!
Im not a newcomer to dnd in general, but im totally inexperienced on how to play Druid, which im doing in an upcoming campaign. Any advice on how to keep track of my Wildshape forms, statblocks, ect? I remember reading it and seeing there being basically alot of "You keep this from you, this from your new form, unless your x is higher" ect
5.5e or 5.0e ?
okay so basically, you keep your class features, your mental stats and your proficiencies. All species features are DM fiat
dm fiat?
basically your DM decides if you keep them. there are no hard rules
Ah
Dm's rule is law; if they decide some thing is the case; it is
generally most DMs defer to RAW though
Rules As Written
no DM fiat in this context is, "the rules say that the DM decides"
within reason. there do exist toxic DMs out there.
Guys, what do players do in taverns?
Meet, typically.
Rp. Get to know each other. Hopefully the PCs vibe well before setting off on an adventure
The tavern can also be where an adventure hook gets presented.
Meet the locals, get known and know people, get the gossip, fish for adventures, rumours, news of the area. Possibly even have a drink or a meal.
can i not make my roll20 character into a pdf link or file? like dndbeyond
I don't think so.
how do i share it here then
I've never found a way to share Roll20 sheets publicly.
Download a blank pdf from DDB and you can type anything you like.
A workaround is to take screenshots and share those via a site like Imgur or Google Drive.
I'll have to type in everything?
Back in my day...
lol
You want full, free customisation, that's the route.
oh if i seem lazy ,i only have a mobile
Also question, is there a limit to how many forms i can have memorized? Or is it literally "how many you remember your character remembers"
Oh I see.
in 5.5e(2024)
Druid 2~3: 4 forms
Druid 4~7: 6 forms
Druid 8+ : 8 forms
is this 5 or 5.5?
We're doing 5
unlimtied then; just need to have seen them and meet the CR/Level requirementsz
highly recomend having a few on hand where you know what they do so you can quickly process withe use of Wild Shape
also be aware in 5e that you can be knocked out of wildshape if your run out of the temp hp provided by it
We're running it on R20 so im making statblock for my core kit rn
DM apperently made a whole folder just for my shifting
you can just drag and drop them from the compendium onto a new blank NPC character sheet
a bunch of them are in the free basic rules, and for the ones you have the books for
easier than writing them all out by hand
Do the Eldritch Invocations, which let you "cast [Spell] without expending a spell slot" (Like Armor of Shadows, for example) require you to have the spell prepared, or do you get the spell for free?
i have a sort of mechanic question about the pdf generated by dnd beyond,i delete something and fill in my customised thing but then after saving and downloading,in the downloaded link the thing i deleted seems to still be there but sometimes it's transparent text or something?
it's very confusing, idk if I'm editing the file correctly
You don't need to prepare anything or even have it on your spell list. The invocation lets you cast it.
I'm uhh
A newcomer newcomer
I do know some basic stuff
I just need to know if I need to know anything else before starting

Have you read the rules (linked above)? That's the usual place to start. We also have #learn-to-play.
I have read that dyno!
Oh?
I guess I haven't spied that channel with my little eye
SRRY FOR THE CONFUSION!
Wait
Oh I thought
I have read that !
If you've read that and the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), you should have a decent sense of how the game works.
Very well!
So all I need to do now is to find a game, correct?
That's the next step.
Thanks iamrazorwing!
See you again sometime)
iamrazorwing, do I need to learn everything in the rules glossary?
Nope, it's there for reference. If you've read "Playing the Game" (section 1 of the rules), you should be ready enough.
Alrighty, thanks once again!
No problem. For future reference, no need to reply directly to someone when they've just answered a direct question and are clearly active in the conversation.
Oki!
quick question, are there scams/sleazy "Dungeon Masters" who will invite you to a group but require a specific art style for your character and ask for a commission?
dang... Here I was getting excited to play a game :/
Sorry you had to go through it :/ lots of people have reported that now. Scummy people out there fr
Yeah, it seems that particular scam is going around a lot :(
Please report them to Discord (and feel free to come up to #moderator-support and ask for a private thread with the moderation team - we appreciate those reports as it helps put those accounts on our radar).

Hello
howdy. let us know if u have questions
Thank you
Question what is a recommend d&d game for newcomers heavy combat or heavy RP
It truely depends on you really, you player or dm?
player
I'd just say a short adventure with both is preferable so you can decide which you like
honestly that is 100% up to u. and the only way to find out is to give it a whirl. honestly most end up being semi balanced but you'll learn quickly
Makes sense I do like heavy roleplay since I enjoy the consequences or the interesting outcomes combat I also need to find a game that the DM has the sharing books thing that I can make a rabbit race which is I don't know how many people have that book that have the rabbit
My person opinion, I like a more rp focused one, combat is fine by roleplay is what I love
Which is why I came over to join at d&d community again since they actually care about stories and not just sitting around
there is a book or 2 with the rabbit race also known as the Harengon.
Which is why exactly I'm trying to find it d&d game that has the book or content share of it besides you don't see many of that race at least I'm assuming that's the case
are u looking to actually join a campaign to play, or just make the character?
Iād wanna join a campaign but only one with play by post
Join a game along with somebody that has enough patience to help me make it character in dnd beyond which I feel like that's a lot to ask since I don't know that's what happened with my last game is somebody was nice enough that to walk me through it and patient enough which is why I been hesitant to join a game sorry if I'm taking up too much space....
That's going to limit your options since they're less common. But they do exist, so keep an eye out
I will
Hello. I am new here.
Welcome
Salutations :D I'm also new here
Hello. I'm new to the D&D, but I want to learn about and start to play. Hope i can improve my english aswell, as I'm not a native speaker. It's my pleasure to be part of the community
Welcome, you can always start by checking the basic rules of DND and the common terms as those are the standing blocks of dnd^^
Hiii Iām new to D&D was wondering whatās the best way to find a group to play with
Hi im new. im reading the rules for the first time rn and hope to play with some folks
I'd recommend trying to find one in real life, as that's the full experience. See if any gamestores or even libraries near you has a d&d night! Otherwise, there's #find-a-game and #looking-for-players
Thank youuuu
How do I start getting into dnd
