two full sets, yes. that way you have two of each type. its better if they're in different colours, but thats not critical. what is important is that they are fairly balanced and easy to read quickly
that does make it easier, yes.
Ideally, each player should have a set.
Plus it'll be harder to switch cuz of the DM screen & possible distance.
That's on them, though, not you as the DM.
ideally, each player would have two sets of dice. but that's not a requirement, its only to make things move faster so you don't need to keep rolling dice over and over again
But doesn't the DM use dices too, you know for the monsters.
Yep, the DM is also a player.
a player with a special role. so make sure the DM has fun too
Well Im the DM.
To sum, everyone at the table ought to have one set of dice. Two if possible to speed things along.
if you want a set for you and a set for the players to share, that works out great.
Alr, is my setup good btw ?
Where's the Mountain Dew?
Needs more snacks (/hj) but otherwise looks fine!
None in my country xD.
Are there any Cheetos?
Well we did buy drinks.
oh, you can have the players roll the dice into the box lid. that way the dice won't fall on the floor
Well no, we actuallt decided to throw them on the map.
that works too
Since it's big.
i just get over excited and throw more than i should
I also found an amazing website to print your maps, & connect/tape the papers.
nice.
I made the map out of 15 A3 lists.
i print mine onto letter (close to a4) sheets and then tape them too. they work alright.
What, YouTube? It's a fad.
Anyways, is the setup good jokes aside?
i'll check it out later. just remember that not everything needs a giant map like that. even though it looks so cool. if you have combat, or positions are important, you probably want a full size map. if it's something in a tavern where your exact positions don't matter, you can get away with having it on a single sheet of paper. unless you want to have a full size map because it looks awesome.
your setup looks awesome.
You have to place miniatures & know the distance of your characters & monsters.
Like monster is far, you can't hit him with arrow.
best advice i can give is not to get caught up with how many kobolds there are asking everyone questions at the start. it can be intimidating to play that many NPCs at once. i don't get why it just throws the DM into that. it can be one kobold asking all the questions if that works best.
Well yeah, my campaign has many kobolds at the first chapter.
I think 8.
Or 12.
Anyways ty for the info, talk soon!
good luck. make mistakes. have fun
Well I will, since I'm new to D&d.
Hey I’m new to dnd and I recently made a lil binder with my characters is there anything I should get like spells or monster cards that would help me is it all unnecessary
You don't need to get anything else, it's up to you if you want to.
I've never played D&D before, I have some knowledge, and I want to learn the game more thoroughly. I'm Turkish (Cypriot) and I have a little English.
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
read through the Playing The Game and Character Creation chapters of this
for my character i printed out a little "details" booklet that contained all the class, subclass, lineage, heritage, background, and talents. up to the current level. if i had any notable inventory, i'd add the details for that too. then i'd make a separate spell book with all the spell info.
What are some feats, besides grappler, that would fit perfectly for a monk?
Crusher can be neat
Tavern brawler ain’t bad if it’s an origin feat
hello i am searching french speaker who can teach me the game<
Mobile is also good
Hiii
Hallooo
Greetings. You friend now.
yay! Wait how old are u if u don’t mind me asking…
I’m very scared this can go so wrong
Can’t reveal my age by server rules, but I’m under 18
If that’s what you’re worried about
Hi also under eighteen, I’m Nugget
I cackled
Anywho anything I can help you with?
Hi Nugget I'm somebody!
Pronouns my good person before we talk more?
hi somebody I’m zuko!
He/him.
or Nug/get (jk)
Lmao, she/they for me!
Yo somebody are you unc?
No I am not above 18
Bet friend me let’s start a gc
I’d rather not, sorry.
IH ALR
so no friend or no gc?
Oooo, I'll take note of that
No gc
Good suggestions too. Thanks!
O okkkk
Can I help ya with dnd tho? (Before we get off topic and get smited)
I wanna make a campaign but I got nobody to play with and how do I make my sessions longer?
You can find players to play with in #looking-for-dm , and adding more plot points, descriptions, dialogue and combat can make sessions longer
Ooo alrr
If you want to get into dming and have no experience grab one of the free adventures (frozen sick) or a starter set like dragons of storm wreck island, icespire peak, lostmines of phandelver
heyyy im under 18 too
I see Dwarf
so +1 from a Dwarf trait, no?
dwarfs have a trait like that
Wait, is that using 2014 rules and draconic sorcerer by any chance
but I didnt know dwarfs have a trait like that lol thanks
where does this guy get tough from?
but yeah I think that'd be
8 from cleric
1 from constitution
1 from dwarven toughness
2 from tough feat
They'd have tough from their Farmer background iirc
yeah true
but also what the hell even is that site
I sent a different character sheet
he is a soldier how does he have tough trait
Human gets an additional origin feat, in that sheet they chose tough
just make sure to fully read through the traits
I just read what a battle master does
isnt he straight up way better than other fighter subclasses like champion?
eldritch knight is also pretty cool
Not necessarily.
After all, battle master can run out of dice, whereas a champion never runs out of their crit chance and their extra fighting style
Also, eldritch knight gets access to spells, but also again limited resources (spell slots)
It is generally considered one of the best if not the best fighter subclass, but it’s not gonna be WAYYY better
ig but I feel like those advantages are not very good
the extra fighting style is ok but improved crit is mid
improved crit is actually very potent.
Doubling crit chance, on "Mr Attacks the Most" class
also in bait and switch, do you roll a d8 to boost armor class?
yep
That seems insane if you roll an 8
Or a 10, or 12, at higher levels
you get 8 extra armor class for a turn?
But you could also just, roll a 1 or something
still even 1 extra armor class on a turn isnt that bad
You or the target, and it's until your next turn (something around that timing)
8 is insane
Start of next turn yeah
so from my understanding you do bait and switch on someone elses turn right?
No, you do it on your turn
wait isnt the whole point to take a hit someone else was suppose to take?
More like it’s meant to defensively maneuvre yourself while giving AC bonuses
Not really "taking a hit someone else was supposed to take"
I don't think any of them do quite that. Although the Interception or Protection fighting styles slightly do that, in terms of defending another
But yeah bait and switch is
on your turn, you expend a die and 5 feet of movement
Roll the die, until the start of your next turn, you or that creature you switched with gets bonus AC equal to the roll
It lets you get someone out of the way of an enemy while improving defenses for one of you
great for saving a squishy caster friend from a melee enemy and giving them bonus AC
Hola, I’m relatively new to the whole TTRPG scene, but not the roleplaying scene, and I’m looking to run a Campaign for 3 first time TTRPG players (myself included).
This specific campaign that we all locked down is based upon JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (Search JoJo D&D for reference),
Yet none of us have any PROPER experience actually playing in a tabletop roleplaying game. I’m not sure what else to do other than ask for some help in a mix of GENERAL character creation, organizing/orchestrating the session, and properly comprehending certain rules.

if there's anyone willing or wanting to talk this over with me, Please reach out to my direct messages; or we can hold a conversation here!
This isn't the channel, use #find-a-game for the ad-posting process
I see.
I’m looking for general advice on how I should go about creating a character, of which I can relay to 2 of my friends.

Admittedly, that "JoJo" stuff would be very far departed from D&D
a 1/10 chance is still not good
and it only has a 1/20 chancee of doing something
its to luck based
completely understand, but for some reason even the official discord thought I was lfg when I'm asking for advice.
-# come on, how hard is that?
they suggested I come here to ask for help instead, so here I am.
honestly champion is by far the weakest fighter subclass
I get the fact you never lose improved critical, but its probably going to be useful like thrice per level
you wont get it much more times then you can use ur abilities, and you cant use it on command
Champion is the simplest of the fighter subclasses, making it the easiest to use for introducing people to dnd.
You also get advantage on initiative, and whenever you crit in any way you get some extra no-OA movement
those are all ok, but the problem is they cant be controlled
Also honestly heroic inspiration every round, at level 10, is insane. It's like an indomitable almost, but for any roll.
Champion is just "John Fighter"
ok I will admite
That is absolutely insane
but before level 10 its mid asf
Well, also, the extra fighting style is also pretty good.
its decentish
it's like an extra feat, without the opportunity cost of choosing a better feat than a fighting style
It's not bad, and I'll say that as someone who DOGGED on 2014 champion. This new champion actually being stuffed with benefits is pretty dang good
honestly the level 10 ability makes it playable
the extra fighting style is ok but thats about it
This is sounding more #character-discussion then #dnd-newcomers
oh ok
Keep in mind you're also quite new, just a while ago you were asking how a couple of premade sheets had tough
Maybe you'll find champion to your taste or not, but having some experience will eventually let you properly figure out a frame of reference
Feel free to move the discussion about the champion fighter subclass to #character-discussion
(at least at this level of details!)
ya lets go to #character-discussion
Each manouver uses what they mention, most seem to use either your Bonus Action or Reaction, and some you can just do without requiring any actions such as ones that power up your other attacks or actions
if no Action is mentioned, it doesn't require one
Is there a fillable character sheet for martial classes
I foun this one, but the second page seems kinda useless for martial classes without spells
I'm sure someone's done one. No harm in leaving it blank though - and who knows, maybe your character learns a little magic on their adventures.
is that possible?
Very much!
The main avenue that would have that happen would be from multiclassing into a spellcasting class or picking a martial subclass that has limited access to spells

the one that looks the most fun to you
And what level of effort you want to put in!
I’m considering warlock or paladin
Paladin's a good choice!
The weapon Maul? its not overpowered at all
Ok!
its only 10 gp
thats the same as greatsword no??
for 1/5 the price
sure but it hardly matters. those prices are more for flavor than having any real impact on most games
50 gold is not much for an adventurer
but it does the same thing
plus at the beginnning
Also, Maul has topple, and the greatsword has graze
you have to budget
in my experience, you maybe need to budget this kind of stuff for 1-2 levels at worse. Its certainly possible for a character to start with a greatsword and all important gear if they do starting gold
Thanks
Hi guys I have never played dnd but I wanna try cause of stranger things
Have you by chance read the "how to play" sections of the rules yet? If no we can like you them!
Link*
No I haven't can I see it?
There is a bot but idr the command but I can go to the website. Brb

I love writing mangas and stories so I thought I'd start dnd
Don't need my link no more woo!
Ill check it out soon!
Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Are you looking to DM as well?
I think that would be a good idea!
And btw why is my username used and not my display name?
Good advice is that you don't write the story. You write the world and together with your players you all write the story! That's how I approach as a dm anyway
If you know?
I'm on phone and I just hold down on my name and click "edit server name" or whatever is similar to that
Back to my display name now
It's possible your name got changed by the server automatically, to meet server regulations. You can read more about what the server rules are in #rules , or ask the mods questions directly in #moderator-support .
Oh it was probably copyright then
Cause of Jujutsu Kaisen
Hello I'm new to dnd and I was wondering what things should I buy to understand the game? I own the players guide but im not sure what else to get
The Player's Handbook is all you need to get started.
If you're looking to get into the role of Dungeon Master, the Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual are the usual next purchases.
Gotcha thanks
Dk where to ask this but in the looking for DM section how do I ask to join someone’s group or whatever,do I respond to the thread or do I dm them personally?idk
It'll depend, but for the most part unless they person said to dm them you're better of playing it safe and saying in the thread that you're interested
Thank you

Hey question. Can someone in lamemans terms explain true strike to me, they way it's worded in D&D beyond has me a bit confused
Yo what’s good y’all
I’m building a DCUO/Nexus City RP server and I’m trying to use Avrae to run it like my own mini D&D system. I want Avrae to handle stuff like dice-based PvP outcomes, simple character profiles, and tracking tokens/items (rerolls, shop items, “memory shard” progression, etc.).
I’m still new to building custom Avrae systems, so I’m trying to figure out the right direction:
What’s the best way to set up a custom system like this in Avrae?
Should I be using aliases + uvars, character sheets, or something else?
Any tips or examples on how you’d structure it so it stays simple for players?
5.5e true strike, you can use your spellcasting ability instead of Str or Dex for an attack
As an example, lets say you're using a dagger, and you have +2 in dex, and we say Int is your spellcasting ability with a +4.
Normal attack would be d20 roll +2 and proficiency bonus.
True strike attack would be d20 roll +4 and proficiency bonus, and chose if damage is normal or radiant.
Np, Also Normal damage bonus would be +2, but True strike damage bonus would be +4 in my example
I'd probably try one of the Avrae channels like #ddb-avrae-help . This channel is for players learning how d&d works
I think the initial explanation covered most of it. But do note that True Strike also counts as casting a spell, not taking the Attack action, which can matter for some mechanics.
Sorry to bother I just waned to ask if I’ve never played before should I start with making a character sheet?[idk what their called] or finding a group?
Start with giving the game rules a read through, specifically focus on chapter 1 (core game mechanics) and 2 (how to create a character)

Then you can try your hand at making a character to learn how it's done but note that consider that practice as you'll likely want to change it/create a new character specifically for the D&D group/game you'll joing and play in.
Yo
I’m not too unfamiliar with D&D, my friend introduced me to it and I’ve done some research
Alrighty thank you
Nice! Well welcome to the official D&D Discord server ran by Wizards of the Coast. Take a look at #learn-to-play and the bot message here: #dnd-newcomers message. They have useful info and links to help get you started. Feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them while learning.
I have a problem with making a character but its not like I dont have an idea about " What he is look like " its like what proficens i need to choose to have a realistic character how can i make it better (srry for bad english)
also with the story ( I know it depends on universe of the campaign ) I have ideas but I cant make a good story about my character it happens because I am lacking of creativity or different reason
The steps for creating a character are in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
As for making a character with "a good story," I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourself. Your character can always be like you but with magic (or whatever), or you could base them loosely on a character from a movie, book, etc. It's supposed to be fun, so try not to stress yourself out over making it a certain way.
Hola im new. How does one get into their first session?

Okay cool thanks
I want to play as necromancer but I cant find a class with a name on it can anyone explain it to me ?
If you're looking in D&D Beyond, it's a wizard subclass and you would need to have access to the 2014 PHB
I am un able to use the microphone. It's not working but I would love to play some D&D.
Hi everyone, I'm from Brazil and I've played a few D&D 5e campaigns here, but since I'm on a server in another language, I thought it best to start with the basics and find a group to play with. My English is...
Basic, but I understand and can speak a little.
That’s because it’s a subclass specially a wizard subclass in a suppument forgot the one tho
Or was it cleric?
That depends on what you’re going for.
Story; I like to use an acrymin k.i.s.s or keep it simple silly. Sometiems a simple story alllws for more creativity.
As far as proficiency that’s basicly skills you’re good at, what do you want to be good at? Leaping finding clues, standing like Batman and making people squeal with intimidation? Stuff like that
Hey im new somewhat I was able to play a bit before the campaign went to shit due to drama and im hoping to respark my love for the game
Hey hey! If you're wanting to just jump in #find-a-game can help you out. Otherwise what's the Edition you last played? I'd assume the 2014 version of 5e
Yup pretty much believe me my first session was fun but after and before was like horror story
Yikes, that's unfortunate. But well in case you're wanting to catch up to the newest version, there's now the 2024 ruleset (or 5.5e if you will). Though there's plenty of people still playing with the 2014 ruleset
Thank you for the heads up I will do that
Can I put my character story so I know that is to much or something need?
I jes make
Or tell me that is to long
Or the spelling is roung
Idk what the stat to make to
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
My character

to start or find a game, the best places to go are local game stores (if they host d&d games), friend groups, or the #find-a-game channel here.
do you know how to play?
Uhhh I think so
Is there anyone in the server that is willing to check the char sheets?
The folks over in #character-discussion usually help with that
what exactly do you mean by "a whole bunch" and what kind of videos do you mean?
how is passive perception calculated
10 plus the skill
so 10 plus your WIS modifier. and then if you have proficiency in perception you add your proficiency modifier
you can do similar for passive investigation and passive insight.
and if you are feeling especially bold, passive intimidation or any other skill. not that they'll likely be used
how does a charechter level up?
Characters level up differently depending on how your DM is running their campaign. They usually level up either:
- When the DM has granted them enough experience
- When the DM decides the entire party levels up, usually after a successful adventure or big plot point
Once your DM clears you for leveling up, your character gains the abilities they have access to at the next level.
does the entire party start at level one?
By default, yes. Sometimes the DM begins the campaign at a higher level, but that's only if they say so.
okay!
Depending on the DM and the group. The most common scenario is that the entire party start at level one, but in my case all my player character's start at level three.
are you able to play dnd if u only have a d6 and d20?
You can play with digital dice rollers as well (if group allows it)
You will need a d20, d12, 2 d10, d8, d6, and a d4
The 2 d10s can be used for a percentile roll (e.g. d100)
At higher levels you may need to roll the same type of dice several times (Like the Paladin's Smite who uses 2d8)
this is rlly confusing!!
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
ive got to go now!
The short version is, you'll probably benefit from having a full set of dice. You can easily get a set at a games store if you want to have physical dice, or your group can point you to a digital way to roll dice

Ok I am hear from stranger things ,so ware does it put me
The Basic Rules are still the best place to start!
Tnank u I'll give it a reed
Sorry but that's a bit much for me , can I gat a youtube video pls
There's a few videos linked in the same bot post as well.
Thakx man
Fair warning though, DnD is a game that requires a fair bit of reading. You have to crack into it eventually!
Thanx for carring abt me man
I believe I'll eventually get the hang of it
personally, i find the dndbeyond basic rules to be a bit much to present to new people. the stuff that came with the 5e starter sets (and essentials kit) were much less intimidating.
Ok what's the players handbook
the player's handbook is a much bigger book that goes more into the rules. it gives more options too.
so think of the basic rules as the preview version. its enough to play and make a character with a few options. you can make and play just fine with it.
when you get really familiar with those, you can move on up to the player's handbook. there's more spells to work with, more backgrounds, more subclasses, just generally way more options.
are enemies an option?
there's a way to play D&D solo. its a bit different from normal
maybe more of one of those background character recurring roles where you point at them whenever you see them but don't really know who they are so there's that air of mystery and wonder.
its weird how that actually describes me in my own life. ha
Short version: yes. DnD is intended to be played with 1 Dungeon Master and 3-5 players.
i can send you some links to solo play toolkits
because the dungeon master knows more than the players about what's going on, being the dungeon master and the player eliminates a lot of surprise and uncertainty while playing.
so a special toolkit is needed to play d&d in a way where the dungeon master also experiences unexpected things, since they are the player too
While solo DnD is possible, (though debatably no longer DnD), I certainly wouldn't recommend it to new players. Not entirely sure if it's an appropriate recommendation for this channel in particular.
Is there a good free software I can make DnD maps on?
I've used Inkarnate and Dungeon Fog in the past. They're both nice.
Thanks for the help. I'll check it out rn
by make maps, do you mean take images you've made and then resize them for printing?
or actually constructing maps?
Constructing
so who want to play...

Hey supper new to the discord. Is there a way to see what games are looking players by time zone. Im a long time forever DM and have always done everything in person and trying to find somthing in my timezone has proven difficult.
There's not a search function for timezones, if that's what you're asking for, but most games posted in one of the #find-a-game channels, with either state the timezone, or be set so that it'll what time it'll be in your location
cool beans thanks
Is that channel?
Idk? Ill remove it if off topic just a little excited since im now on a group
Though im curious from dnd vets on experiences i had a negative experience on dnd as a player first try now i got a group now but nervous because of negative experience being a player. How does one recover from that? And can play without the past experience haunting you?
I have always treated every new game as a new experience. Take what I enjoyed and bring that into the next. Im a forever DM but in the 5 times I have gotten to be the player I trusted it as learning a new game from scratch.
Thats actually a good way of thinking besides im playing with people idk and the person that made my dnd experience miserable is no longer in my life
There ye be. Yeah I searched out this discord wanted to be a player but no locals are looking for players. So im taking a stab at online play.
I wish you luck
Hello hello! Very VERY new to DnD (haven't played my first campaign) and I'm currently trying to work things out. Made a character in Dndbeyond already, but I'm fine with making a new one from scratch if the character doesn't fit the setting.
The only question I have is...do I need to do or know something else before I start looking for games to play in? Would appreciate it if you knew how else I could prepare before looking for my first game
I did a quick skim of the rules of the game in Dnd4e, but didn't read all of it...since... it's alot 🫠
Do I need to prioritize trying to memorize all of that?
Thankyou the quest for the quest will continue
Im not fully aware of how the 4e version of dnd works but I believe it is different from 5e and the current 5.5e
I enjoyed it. Its very stream lined and combat heavy. not as loosey goosey as 5e
Interesting might need to check it out sometime
Typo! Mb. Meant 5e, since I figured most ppl would prefer the latest version or smth
I see i see, I mean you dont need to have a full grasp on the rules to begin dnd but it does help to know the main basic ones specifically for the class that youre playing
I find they are all very similar. As long as you grasp what stat is used for what they are pretty straight forward.
Even pathfinder is super similar
Yeah I think I know enough about how the classes work? If I don't, it's easy enough to look it up in Dndbeyond or wherever else right?
Yup correct
Ok. Not really sure how else I can prepare...so... Guess I'll just start looking for games now. Wish me luck lol

new to d&d.. any tips on how not to feel nervous when it comes to the role playing aspect? i’ve rped before, just never on a level like d&d
Don't think too heavily into it. You don't have to be Matt mercer quality of role play. You be as simple or as complex as you want in your roleplay. It can even be as simple as "(character name) stands up and joins the crowd in dance and song". At the end of the day just have fun with your character
Feel nervous its ok. Just say what the character does and dont worry about being a noob or an idiot and just have fun. I was a nervous wreck playing 4th edition when I first got into the game. Playing as a cleric and even getting my turn skipped cause I was to nervous to speak up.
can cleric magic initiates use holy symbols?
do you need a prayer scroll to use shield of faith?
For your first question, not unless you are a Cleric or another class that uses Holy Symbols as foci. The Magic Initiate feat simply adds spells to your character. This also ties into your second question.
For your second question, yes you normally need a prayer scroll to cast Shield of Faith, as that is the spell's material component. As per the Spellcasting Rules in the Basic Rules, you may not need the material component for a spell if you have a spell focus, which can satisfy the material component for any spell for which:
- The material component isn't consumed
- The material component doesn't have a listed gold cost
Since the prayer scroll for Shield of Faith doesn't have a listed gold cost, if you are class that can use Holy Symbols as spell foci, you may use your holy symbol as a substitute for the prayer scroll when you want to cast Shield of Faith
I am a fighter who has magic initiate
how do I get a prayer scroll?
You can ask your DM where to purchase one, or otherwise ask if you can just start with one.
It's normally a pretty tame ask, especially since it isn't a particularly rare or costly thing
hi im a new player how do i play cs i dont get it
i mean cause
Read Playing The Game and Character Creation
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
ok i kinda get it now
when would be the best time to post in looking for DM, should I post it around when im free to join a campaign?
ok
Ill post it in like 5 and a half hours so after 12 pm
or i might wait for a bit later in the evening i imagine more people in my timezone are free closer to 4 or 5
Oh if it’s that soon then might as well do it now
Hi :D
Hallo
I don't think I'd be considered a noob, but I still need a LOT of experience to help with my own campaign that I'm making. I've hosted 2 of my own games and been a player 3 different times, so I have a bit of experience. Not enough, though
I made a post I hope thats enough info to get picked up by someone
#dm-discussion should help ya there

Hello I’m new I would really like to learn but reading rules isn’t good enough for me I’m an experiential learner any tips also sorry I’m really nervous
“Experience” learning is a bit difficult with dnd because of how much investment goes to doing a game. Not to mention, not knowing the rules make it more difficult to find a game…
You could try observing games, interactive adventures or maybe try to have someone you know teach you?
There’s too many new players here for one on one teaching, but if you have a friend who’s knowledgeable enough they might be able to help.
I'm not super new to dnd, but my spouse is. I was hoping to find a new long term campaign, but I see a lot of new people and I'll admit it's a little overwhelming, haha.

Whatever sounds fun for you and fits your game
In 5.5 they made the species not really effect the way a character is, especially in relation to its class
thanks guys @echo kelp @lost silo
best for Monk? Tortle. particularly if they are a young adult, and especially if there are three other Tortle Monks in the party.
and especially if the big bads are an intellect devourer, and a fighter wearing lots of spikes that controls a clan of warforged monks.
why so specific and confusing?
"best" is also so game context dependent (best for what? and best when?) that I don't think it's something really relevant for #dnd-newcomers
ninja turtles
nice
i waited a bit before i gave that away
Nah you gotta go for Ten Aged Ninja Tortles
hmmm.... a human paladin reincarnated into a warforged by way of a warlock pack. turns out the patron has cultists trying to destroy the city so the patron's organization can rebuild it as a paradise where they are in complete control. this greatly conflicts with the character's paladin oath. Robocop.
What’s the second number in a ranged weapon called
It's their range. Ranged weapons have two ranges, normal and long
So it’s called long range?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Range
A Range weapon has a range in parentheses after the Ammunition or Thrown property. The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon’s normal range in feet, and the second is the weapon’s long range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have Disadvantage on the attack roll. You can’t attack a target beyond the long range.

You can look for a group in #looking-for-players most people would be glad to teach a newbie how to play
"let's get into dnd :)"
spends countless hours doing research on how to start
finds the "Dark Sun" book
"oh the cover looks neat"
watches videos on it

One heck of a place you chose to start there
Dark Sun is a pretty niche setting. The Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Dragonlance, Planescape, Spelljammer and so forth have actual current content.
I wasn't planning on starting there, I was just looking through books to see what was interesting
I'll certainly agree that the art is amazing. Brom has a very distinctive style.
kingmaker looks pretty rad
we're maybe getting a new one this winter as well
Oh right, we got a 5e Kingmaker version. It was originally a Pathfinder campaign.
oh, I was looking at the pathfinder book
interesting
they filed a trademark for the new book and we have had UAs for some DS themed subclasses as well as the scion class c:
it'll probably be a while till we get anywhere near that type of story
the group I'm playing with is entirely brand new
big fan of Circle of Preservation druid
I'm also new
huge fan of narrative declaration, avantris, and dungeons & dad's so I thought of trying out the game as well
Some of the best D&D experiences was with an all new group, learning together can be a blast :)
it is definitely a fun experience
And mistakes are easy to fix (or just not important)
Hello
this may be a silly question, but do people make characters and then use those characters through every campaign or do they just remake their already made characters for that specific campaign?
people do both
I mostly play the one character across many campaigns, but that's on the uncommon side
usually, most people make a new one for each table/campaign
I see, thank you
From my experience, the latter. Actually, most of the time people make new characters made specifically to fit to a campaign.
Can I know the details of the map from DM before playing or not?
Like If there seas or no
aah, liek the general world map
generally not too big of an ask
Depends on the game! If the game focuses on exploration, the DM might start you with a mostly unknown map.
been listening to a couple pathmaker podcasts and i keep seeing the same name in each of their campaigns so I was wonderin
Thanks
Depends - like a world map would likely be okay (but check with DM) as that may be knowledge your character would already know.
But details about a dungeon (e.g. traps and monsters in specific locations) - probably not okay.
you might know generally that there are oceans and bodies of water, or if an area is more dry from others that have explored the area prior, rumors, etc.
just down to what your DM says you have access to
Thanks
"the DM makes the game, whatever they say goes"
more or less
Should I send my character details to the Dangen Master or not?
It is a shared and collaborative game though so there is room for discussion - and if things don't align, then that game might not be the right D&D game for you.
Your DM will generally need to verify things are set up properly with options available within the setting
it's a good idea to do so unless they ask you not to (which is rare)
Generally it's a good idea to run your character by the DM so they know what to expect (and also can plan things in the game specifically for your character)
Thanks for help guys

Is there any limitation to which character can i create?
so long as they follow the cahracter creation rules and are using legal sources not nixed by your DM, not really
Aight thx
Quite a lot, yeah! In DnD, you build your character out of the character options given to you by the rules.
can also reflavor things and describe them however you want so long as they use standard rules text / statblocks
just make sure whatever it is you're actually doing rules wise is apparent so people can follow along
Is there any place where I need to create a character like a spread sheet or so on?
DnD Beyond has a pretty straightforward character creator
depends on how the game is being run
if in a VTT (virtual table top), youd do it in there
Roll20 and DnD Beyond are the two most popular VTTs
I am prob gonna do a vtt then considering I don't have real life friends who would be willing to do dnd
the links and instructions for them are in the [for players] section in here c:

Please use the Looking For Game channels to solicit/organize a game - read #find-a-game to learn how.
(it's off-topic to organize games in these normal discussion channels)
Oh ok sorry im just trying to get to know what IM doing
Share it in #character-discussion!
Yall i dont know what im doing in dnd and i keep creating fire characters and worldbuilding based on the forgotten realms whos gonna be my friend so i can stop doing all this nerdy stuff alone (dont worry im super cool so it will be easy to get alone)
Got a handle on the rules?
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Alternatively, hang out here, check the #channel-guide to find interesting discussions and take part. Players that show themselves well here are more likely to get spots in games.
Hii, I know dnd and have played 3 sessions at least but all of them are homebrew and could barely classified as a proper game
I want to understand the mechanics better, is there anyway to find more information? Aside from reading the book (If I can't find the free pdf, then I can't read it...)
I really want to play the game properly in a way, though time also a matter to me with that problem
Welcome! The free Basic Rules can be found linked in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
Ah! Thank you so much, that's really helpful
are there any audio books I can watch though? A curious thought really
I’m not aware of any audiobooks for the BR, unfortunately
Ah well, I'll just pull through it then!
As for finding a group to play with using this server the instructions can be found in #find-a-game !
Hither and thither, nice :3
And of course if you have any questions feel free to ask here
I'm looking for one... though I might have to think about it when I have the free time
for now, I'll just watch dnd players on youtube to fill the itch
are we alowed to talk about other dnd channels?
How long does a game usually last for
A single session averages 2-4 hours but can be shorter or longer. An adventure campaign can go on for weeks, months or even years
What do you mean by other dnd channels?
yo i all my friends play dnd ive seen many videos on dnd so i decided to look around and i just joined where do i start i kow already a lot of terms and im looking through some rn but if theres anything else that would help. also if theres like a channel where like i can talk to a person who knows how to play and we run a mini campain to like learn if not all good
If you feel fairly comfortable with the Basic Rules then I suggest reading the lfg instructions in #find-a-game to find a group. If you want something short and quick you can look for a beginner-friendly one-shot (if one isn’t advertised as such, it’s always good to ask)
aight thx rn im just reading terms and then i will go into rules
also one more question in a typical dnd game what would the players have open in like other tabs or is it all compiled into one
It honestly depends. When I play online, our group uses Discord for voice, D&D Beyond for characters/dice rolls, Owlbear Rodeo for tokens, and Google Docs for safety tools. Some folks have their own personal playlist going as well.
Oh, and Microsoft Word if I'm taking notes.

Hi, I’m Robin!
I’m new to this server and I’m trying to find a game, I wouldn’t say I’m an overly experienced or advanced player, but intermediate is probably a fair summary of where I’m at. Cos I’ve played a few games before.
Anyways, could someone please help me understand this server a little better? Thanks!
Yeah so the server rules are here: #rules

Thank you, much appreciated!
im fairly new to dnd and i was wondering if i should play a martial class just because they are easier to play and learn the rules with
I'd say they're easier to get to grips with for sure, yeah.
Though if you're starting at level 1, you could probably get your head around any class if you're willing to.
Fighters are especially simple
can someone please mabye teach me how to play dnd online without me having to use a microphone ?
Hello. So I’m not new to dnd as a whole I’ve played for like 3ish years now but I am new to DMing cause my old group just kinda stopped being able to play (life happens) and I have some friends online that wanna play (who have never played before) and I figured being one of the 2 people who has dnd experience I should probably dm for the first campaign. Problem is I have NO CLUE what im doing and my adhd makes it really hard to figure it out. So any advice or tips would be incredibly helpful
Especially for like making campaigns and organization stuff
?tag new pbp
Communicate with your players
Respect your players
Put passion into the game
Don’t overprep
Expand your vocabulary
Show, not tell (and use descriptive language that talks into all senses)
Have fun, no stress, and COMMUNICATE
Have a session zero
You don’t write a story, your party lives through one. Don’t prepare tales, prepare scenarios.
Try to know more than your players
COMMUNICATE
If you’re struggling with this I’d do a module
Also #dm-discussion is a great resource, use it
Ty!
One of my best friends was actually my old groups dm so I can also ask her ok the fly questions lol
Its definitely good to have a mentor!
Quick ask tho for my first campaign it’s prolly best to run a premade right? None of my members have played DnD before other then one other person so it’s not like it would be something they’ve already played
Yup!
Cool ty!
Hence this “module”
Ah see I didn’t know what that meant lol

anyone know where me and a buddy of mine can look for a new dnd game being made or something? we're newcomers
Are there larger premade stories that I can claim somewhere? I'm trying to learn to dm for my homies but they really, don't want to do a one-shot
hello all, im just here to explore and experience games in genres i have zero knowledge of and maybe potentially join one of these talbetop sessions or something
start with a one shot but then continue with those characters with your own story that the one shot helps inspire. anything longer will cost cash money

Hey, how likely is it that a DM takes 3 new players on a campaign, or even 1 or 2?
Happens a lot
REally?
I did just that like 2 weeks ago.
Heck in my main campaign I had 8 newbies in one game
I will say tho, it’s harder to get a game if you’re new still
It happens a fair bit, but it still might take a lil while
mmmm
The amount of DM’s is an insane amount less than players, and some DM’s don’t want to deal with teaching. Learn the rules and understand them at least decently and that should help your odds.
Right, I figured as much
lol my players once rolled a 11 on a d20 and then asked me what did they roll
i swear sometime they do not listen when i explain stuff either
*most of the time
one of the reasons i mainly DM newbies. i go in expecting i'll be telling them what general area on the sheet to find something.
and the first few combats i remove the DM screen and go step by step for what i'm doing on my side. players knowing i'm not just pulling numbers out of the air.
it can be, if you find the right people to play with.
every table is a bit different
Nobody I know has ever touched dnd
i meant in general. every table is different from the next. no two groups are the same. some groups just want to roll dice and fight things. some groups want to go deep into role play and do silly voices. some groups use puppets
the big first step is to read up on the rules. there's some free ones availabe on dndbeyond. for 5e and for 5.5e
So my dm said something odd when I said I said I wanted to be a teifling bard when we started the campaign, like I had something planned (I don’t :<) and I’d like to hear some ideas on what he may have thought if possible???:3
well what did he say exactly? :o
I barely remember, something along the lines of, “So you’re doing that..?” MAYBE
it was in August I just now thought to ask tho
Hard to say then
Tiefling Bard is a fairly common combo, so that may have been all they meant
yeah I’d second that^ … what he said doesn’t seem all that questionable, but I could just be interpreting it too literally without other context clues. Maybe he was quite literally just confirming with you that it is the direction you were deciding to go with for your character
No he made it seem like it where more like i dunno
I'm new to dnd and Don't know the rules of dice! Could i get help?
Read the information in 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.

Alright thank you!
Generally; most things have you roll a d20; though dependin on what you're rolling, it'll tell you what dice to use.
Regardless; follow that info and it'll teach you the basics of the game right quick c:
I got a question
Do you use D10 for potion or other effects on players? As a dm
You use a d10 when a feature tells you to use a d10
I can't think of a potion that does, tbh
Read the information in 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers or check out the resources in #learn-to-play ; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
that first part where it says 'Playing the Game' is the most important part; read everything in there; even if you don't remember all of it

I have to back though the bard section of the book again i completely forgot

hello. look thru the basics in the bot then hop back in with specific questions
Everything I guess
Like MitchoChano said, you can read the rules above. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask!
Doing it right now. Thanks, I’ll let you guys know
Question: I were to assume that my what-if character can’t be a “golem” race?
What do you mean by golem?
Unless you're using homebrew (community/self-made-up rules), there is no golemn species/race for player characters.
Aw man
And if you're new to D&D, I'd suggest avoiding homebrew until you have a better feel of the game rules and mechanics so you can understand how to balance homebrew when adding it to your games.
There’s warforged, which are also constructs. And genasi embody specific elements
Oh and autognomes are also constructs
Oh that could work
There are a lottt of races, so I’m sure you’ll find something!
I just want to find someone unique. Something that isn’t humanoid to say the least
I think other than centaur they’re all at least vaguely human-shaped
But some are inspired by animals
I’m looking at the dnd website and seeing that golems are monsters only. Oof
What about golems do you like?
I just like how they look really. No need for all the fancy looks of a human. Sure being like an ancient being made out of a certain raw material sounds boring but I really see potential. Like just an example or really just a concept: a species of golems who uses wrecks of ships as their bodies similar to hermit crabs. And they can use their runes to use the ship’s body as a shell to like disguise themselves as the ship to sail the seas and maybe help other ships with human/other crews, and since they have runes they could probably use like the cannons or the anchor as their weapons. I don’t know really, is just what my imagination has been running through ever since I just joined.
Sorry if it’s too much to say
I’m definitely gonna get called out…
Uh oh
It's not too much, but your best bet is playing Warforged or Autognome if you want to go with a golem style character if you don't want to homebrew a species.
Also playing a character who's big enough to use shipwrecks like a hermit crab's shell would be impractical.
Yeah, you’d have to be playing a specific style of homebrew campaign for that
And don’t worry as far as I can tell people send big messages all the time
I guess warforged then, that idea would be closed for now
how do i find groups looking for players?

Hi, is there any Spanish or Latin community to join a game?
With your DMs permission, you could use an existing race (ie. Humans or warforged) and flavor it as a golem. Flavor means to use vanilla rules but different descriptions.
There's a subreddit called DnDespanol, maybe they can help.
Thanks
Im a monk and I want find familiar and have it through my human origin feat. I also get 2 cantrips, 1 will be prestidigitation, but IDK what my other should be. It wont be mage hands but besides that idk\
Depends what you're looking for. Light is decent utility if you don't have darkvision
Or you could take an actual damage one if you want the option
Yeah I dont have any ranged damage as I play completely unarmed
I dont really want to go for light as no one on our team has darkvision/ light spells so it will make stuff interesting for the dm
Im thinking mind sliver as I can use my bonus action to shove an enemy prone
As a DM, I'll say that doesn't really make things more interesting imo. It just means the party is at a disadvantage whenever it's dark
True, but I told them I wouldnt so for now ill pass
were also a close range team, monk, warrior, bard
I might go minor illusion just so I have even more tricks up my belt
Honestly, I might do ranged damage in that case. Being a close range team means you'll be SOL in any other situation
Wish you could have multiple of the little tag things
Message, dancing lights?
I thought about Message but idk if that will just be a bit boring
Weve got a cracked bard so maybe I just double stack and go minor illusion
IDK maybe message would be cool
Ill need to find copper wire tho
Component pouch. Buy it once, never worry about it again.
This is the way
is that just a pouch or something different?
It's a pouch of components that fulfill the requirement for any material components that don't have a listed gold value.
ah I see, so not for find familiar as thats incense with a gold value
interesting
That you would still have to purchase, yes.
Oh cool minor illusion can like. Block an area from a monster if they dont realise its fake
and it lasts for 10 turns in combat
Oh cool I can just use prestidigitation to summon simple material components
Lots of uses for it, but do come up with some ideas and run them by the DM before you start. Trust me, it works a lot better when you've got a playbook of your common tricks and you're both in agreement as to how they might work.
Hey. I don't know anything about dnd but I really wanna play, how can I get into it?
Start by reading the basic rules, then see if you have any specific questions. Find a table (you can find some in #looking-for-players ) and make your character
Start at #learn-to-play

Okay thanks
hey!!
howdy. let us know how we can help
Im making a barbarian build on dnd beyond and Im wondering whether I should be a dragonborn (lightning) or a goliath. Or any other suggestions.
Are you coordinating with a group currently?
Hey I’m new to dnd and me and my buddy tom want to find a couple other people to play and possibly someone to DM
No im just making one for fun
Question? When writing a Backstory how much detail is needed rn i got short summary
Depends on the DM, but I’d recommend half a page to a page. Enough so the DM can hook you into the adventure, but not so much that it’s burdensome to read and remember.
Noted because im struggling writing it as well so i need to know my limit before i pour it in
You can always write more for yourself, as long as it’s consistent with what you share with the DM. Personally I like when PCs have detailed backstories because I feel like they get more engaged, but some DMs can get annoyed, understandably, since they already have so much to study
Ill have to ask about for now i got most of my notes and some of it down
Three sentences is enough for me. How you started, how you got here, where you're trying to go. Begin with basics, highlight what's important, don't get bogged down in details.
You can elaborate as you collaborate with your DM.
how long are DND campaigns usually?
Every group/campaign is different - but could span weeks, months, or even years and go from character level 1 up to level 20 or anything in between.
Also depends how regularly you can meet
Mhmmmm some campaigns can last ages
I mean look at some streamers like crit role going upwards of 200 episodes
Hi
i have made a mistake. i am a new dm and i forgot about silver and copper pieces. the party started at level 3 and they are now level 4. i am having them go to the city and for plot reasons they will need tyo spend money. all of the tables for shop items etc all use copper and silver pieces as well. i don't want to make the party rich yet on accident, but i also don't want them to feel cheated, how should i convert the money they have now to include silver and copper
on average they have 40 gp currently
I've had this same circumstance happen in my current game, so far it hasn't been a problem yet 😂
so do you suggest i just let them keep the gold and introduce copper and silver
40 gp isnt really a lot. You can just stay the course, now introducing the other two coins, ya
👋
thats more 'creative writing' than D&D but, you have fun
I wait with bated breath to see what hash has to say
Hi
I'm a complete newbie, can I have some help pls? I really wanna learn about the game, Id love to roleplay and hang out and maybe make new friends through the game? I understand it'd be kinda annoying taking on someone to teach dnd so im so sorry if this is annoying!
I’m kinda new to DND. I only played for like two months mainly because my friends left the school when we got into it.
Though I likely cannot help you with that I sincerely hope you find a group to play with
Thanks a bunch anyway! Sorry about being a bother :')
You’re no bother that’s the primary point of this channel
don't apologize; you're not a bother for posting in the newbie spot lol
we all started somewhere, eh? I've played for ten years, DMed for 6 now. and i started asking q's and learnin just like anyone else lol. ur welc! i hope its a fun time!
:0 wow a veteran, u sound awesome
If someone help me start a campaign, I’m still kinda new to the game
You have any friends that play DND?
that’s usually the best place to look when starting a new campaign
I used to and then they all at the school except for one, but he doesn’t play as much anymore
Dang
it feels odd to qualify as a vet, but hey i'll take it haha. Thank you for the complo! I just try to give back to the community when I can; its been one of my favorite hobbies for so long now.

Hello! I'm a complete newcomer to this and the only D&D experience I have is with Baldur's Gate 3. I was wondering how do I start making a character? Like do I just write it down on paper?
Check out chapter 2 of the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 - That goes over how to create a character step by step.
And here's a useful video that covers creating a character following those steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXwYXyKwaDo
Here's a PDF character sheet you can use: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Or you can use D&DBeyond to create a digital character sheet.
Feel free to ask questions as you run into things.
I’m a newbie and would love to learn about dnd, videos and that don’t help me learn I’m more of a situational learner I guess you would say, I need to see the thing play out to learn and understand it like when I’m told how to play a sport if I am not taught by showing me what it looks like etc I don’t understand it and have a harder time understanding it
You might enjoy the new D&D liveplay show Dungeon Masters: https://youtu.be/mY9w7n84PmM
They actually provide informational splashes during the game explaining what rule was being referenced/used.
Hello! I'm a newbie and the amount of informations regarding D&D is insane. What are truly the most important things i should bo focusing on as a beginner? What are the true fundamentals?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
Making a character will generally cover classes (know the one you’re using well and a basic understanding of how the others work) and modifiers, so that already cuts it down a bit
Also, if you’re struggling with anything specific, asking a friend or here is a good way to get reliable info
Hello, i am new to dnd and i wanna be a ginormous druid, someone help me now
Or else
How do you mean ginormous?
If it's just size, your best options are picking Enlarge/Reduce -spell for making yourself big, and/or going with Moon subclass and picking big animal forms (Giant Constrictor Snake, Giant Elk, various dinosaurs, etc.)
Thats not what i meant
I mean im brand new to dnd, and i did a little research about the classes, and i would like to be an 11 foot tall druid
I just need help actually learning how to play the game
Dont think theres any official species that get to 11ft tall, goliaths are the biggets i can think of and theyre usually 7-8ft tall
As for learning how to play check out the free basic rules on dnd beyond and try to get familiar with those
Theres a command for this im pretty sure that i do not know but check this out
For reference, you just post ?new and it should come up
I just finished making my first character on D&D beyond, and I was wondering if someone could look at it and give me their honest, experienced opinion on it.
Please note: I’ve never played before and although I enjoy creating characters, this has been drastically different than anything else I’ve done and I just want to make sure that I’m not being too much of a nerd about it, lol
Hey! iam very new to Dnd I’ve been in one game as a player before and it ended in disappointment. Now my kids have taken and interest in dnd and I really want them to have a good experience and try to make it something fun to do for them. I will be DM-ing for the first time. I have no idea what to do really, so iam asking for advice is there is anything I should/ should not do?😝 we have tried to set up some simple characters and trying not to complicate it too much as it’s our first time. 😊
Have you read the free rules?
I've found a nice way to start is to run a very simple adventure. Peril in Pinebrook is made just for that, with tips for new DMs. It also works as a sort of tutorial for the rules of the game too:
https://media.wizards.com/2023/downloads/dnd/Peril_in_Pinebrook_COMPLETE.pdf
Notably it breaks away some of the complexity and even has simplified player character sheets included, but you could play it with normal level 1 characters as well.
I have been trying to read the basic rules, but I have to be honest 180 pages is a lot of info. But I have them available to reference to if I need it
You don't need to read everything. I recommend focusing on your specific character choices (class/species/etc) and general rules
I have got into dnd however all of the tutorials/beginner guides seem a bit too much to take in

Looked at already
that was in response to an earlier post lol. There are some great videos on Youtube, just search for D&D tutorials, I am sure you can find some that may help
Oh okay Ill keep looking
the other option is to search for groups that fit your schedule and talk to the DM explaining that (I am guessing you are like me) you learn by doing, not reading
Oh thats a good idea
Ill look around
got a copy of the phb! One step closer ^_^
I will, thank you very much!
I can't find a group that plays on fridays 😢
did you post what you need and see if a DM reaches out to you? Friday is wildly popular but the ratio of players to DM's is HIGHHHH (probably 1000's to 1) so u may have to be patient to find one
I saw the "looking for players" text channel but not "looking for dm"

I'm a bit confused about choosing a race for characters. I'm assuming it depends on what rp I join. But this might seem like a stupid question but, as a whole, could the race be anything as long as its recognised? Like, lizardfolk?
There is an extensive list of official races, and they do bring with them unique abilities and bonuses. You can find the more common ones for free with the basic rules (and Lizardfolk is playable, but unfortunately not free)
Depending on your DM and setting, various races might not be allowed.
Hello all, I am trying to figure out the logistics of preparing myself to play DnD via my computer. i am trying to get an idea of my initial investment. i have a physical copy of the 2024 PHB but it seems that i need to go the digital route to use available online apps? is there a guide or resource i can use to get myself as prepared as possible before i reach out to try and find a DM/Group?
Not free? So, again this might be stupid but if I didn't say, pay for the book they're from I can't play? I know virtually nothing about D&D so sorry for that.
I've played text roleplay before so fine with the notion of rps having limits, that's all good

unfortunately DnDBeyond and pretty much all other VTTs for online require you to buy the digital version, whether you have the physical or not.
It might be best to familiarize yourself with the basics of DnD. Notably, it is a very rule and number heavy roleplaying game, not just text.
however, there are free options available on DnDBeyond and some of the other VTTs
so digital purchase and potentially monthly subscription to the APP as well?
the subscription on DnDBeyond gets you some perks, but isn't required to make and play, at the moment. in the future, who knows
Also, if you are making your character on paper, you could borrow a rulebook from someone you know. Worst case, just use a free race and reflavor it as something else.
understood, so at the very least the Digital purchase so that i can actually use the character creator to compile my character sheet correctly and actually have it present for games.
with that, would i have all the basics i need to potentially look for other people and start my adventure?
Mmh, maybe I should just stick to text rp. Those are getting harder to find though. It all looks quite daunting
Don't worry if it looks like a lot. Just know the basic concepts, and find a helpful experienced DM via #looking-for-dm or elsewhere. Many of the rules you won't need to know and the rest will come slowly.
Though nothing wrong if you don't think it's for you
I feel like once I know the rules it'll be alright. I've watched lots of D&D content so kinda follow what's going on but gotta get concrete knowledge first. But you're right, first things first
There's enough in the free rules to build a complete character on DDB without buying anything. You just won't have access to everything
Though if you're going to buy 1 book, I'd get the PHB
as a new person getting into DnD whats the consensus on whats needed for online play like Roll20 and DND Beyond and etc
I think i am going to do just that. I have been theory crafting for the past several weeks, and have settled on a Psi-warrior. realized using the DDB app that i couldnt access it for the character creator. as i understand it the digital purchase will allow me to finalize the character sheet as intended. With that understanding, my only apprehension pushing forward is the access to Maps VTT utilization. i am trying to figure it out, and i assume im missing very clearly placed information but it does not seem intuitive. the steps do not seem clear.
If purchasing digital PHB 2024 is the first step, what is my next step? Create the character sheet i want to play? look for a group to get started? What if the group uses the Maps VTT available on DDB app, with just a free subscription plan will i be able to join in and participate?
To be honest, I don't use Maps at all, so no idea there
No consensus. Its a matter of using what works best for you and whatever tools your group decides to use to play D&D.
imo, the free rules and nothing else. No need to buy things until you know what your group will be using
Start with the free rules, if you like the game well enough, consider buying the players handbook.
And other books as needed/desired.
i cant remember how stats work.
?tag new abilities
No - in D&D 5.5 your background gives you a +2 and +1 to allocate among 2 ability scores or +1, +1, and +1 to allocate among 3 ability scores.
Ah
Note that if you're playing original 5e, then it was tied to your race. Though even later books there let you move stat bonuses around
I'm having a problem with DnD overall. Like, I really want to play DnD with people, but I can't make myself socialize and talk to strangers in order to make friends. I know that the whole idea of tabletop games and DnD is being social and meeting with friends. I have one group that plays, but they don't really match me, since they play it like a small, free-time hobby. But I really want another group to play with that's into playing long campaigns over weeks or months or something.
But it's really hard for me to socialize online. I'm not an introvert, or at least I don't think I am. I can socialize in real life just fine, but not online. In real life we have voices, facial expressions, and body language, but online it's only just text (not in the session yet), which is all that's available when we're talking to each other on Discord in order to get to know each other and play together. Like, IRL I often use cheerful expressions or whatever to keep strangers from feeling like talking to me is awkward, trying to make them chill around me, but if we're doing this in text chat, it's like 50/50 whether people would think I'm a nice human being or an idiot.
Another thing is, I really want to play long official campaigns. I think of it like watching a movie, when I watch a movie I like to talk to others (by just simply looking at other people's posts on the internet) and share my experience(with myself, in my mind). I really want to do this with DnD. Like, "Oh, you played Descent into Avernus? Have you seen this, have you seen that?" or "Did you do this?" or "What do you think about that?" I really want to get invested into the story as a player.
I once thought I could just DM for someone else so I could know the story without having to rely on talking to strangers online and finding a group that matches my chemistry, but no, it's not the same as experiencing it as a player, or the consumer. Being a DM is like reading a spoiler or watching a movie spoiler instead of just experiencing it firsthand as a viewer. If only my dumb brain could comprehend the idea of talking to strangers online. But despite that, I'd still take a gazillion attempts to find my dream group that would want to spend time together.
All this is just me ranting. I feel like it's going to happen someday. I can't escape the fact that I either have to talk to strangers or not play this TTRPG forever. So someday I'll have to do it. It's like a quote Michael Afton used to say: "All roads lead to talking to strangers online."
In fact, I've already made some attempts to talk and play with strangers too, but the most recent one ended up being an art scam, so I'm genuinely depressed about that at this point.
Is there a reason that you can't play D&D in person, if that's easier for you?
(other than the obvious of course, that finding a D&D group is hard.)
But there's nothing wrong with preferring D&D in person
closest one is like 300 km away
maybe just 150
but the art scam is the real deal tho, and it's the one that made me rethink my life choices. Like, I put so much mental effort into talking to someone. I spent about 3 days hyping myself up beforehand, and on the day I finally told myself "let's do this guys, we can make it." and it ended up being an art scam. Then I was just like "eeuegghhhehu, I wanna die." I literally don't want to do anything right now. Like, dude, I wish humans had a hive mind so we could have a better communication medium instead of text chat.
Yeah, the art scams are an unfortunate new plague
But if you're stuck with online D&D, you could at least look for a group that uses video and not just voice chat for their games. That will limit your options more, but would likely be more comfortable for you.
If you want general voice chat, that's also going to require at least a smaller server. They used to have voice channels here but they just weren't feasibly to moderate on a server this large.
I got the same issue I wanna play D&D but there's no local games and finding an online one is really difficult, at least for me
No, it's pretty difficult in general. That are exponentially more people who want to play D&D then DMs, so there's always a supply issue. And even then, you still need to find people you actually mesh with
There are some ways to get your foot in the door and get a guaranteed game, but that tends to be things like paying for a game, doing an online convention or finding a smaller community server where there's less competition
Otherwise it's largely just a matter of persistence and luck (or becoming the DM yourself)
i've found scheduling and venue often are just as important of an issue to overcome than lacking enough DMs
I consider a lot of that part of the same supply issue. Not only do you need to find a group, you need to find one that works for you in timing/rate/theme/style etc
If there were more DMs and thus more open games, the scheduling part would likely be less of an issue
back when i was trying to get an online campaign off the ground, it took me about three months through various LFG discords, subreddits, forums, etc. to finally get a group of three for me to DM for at the time i was available. and at that they were spread across the globe in different time zones.
I believe it. Back when I was running online, I often ended up with a wide range of people - US early morning playing with UK late night and the random 3 AM Australia
But that's all scheduling and supply overall imo
as for real life, venue is a bigger issue. there's just nowhere for me to play. i'm not running at game at my home or some stranger's home.
Local game stores are good for that when you have them. Though I know people who play anywhere from bars to libraries
I do actually play at home with some people now, but I met them at the game store originally.
bars, libraries, halls, anything and everything requires quite a hefty fee to use table space.
around here, anyways. a prohibitive amount of $ for space
Unfortunate. Libraries are generally free around here. And bars/cafes are usually fine as long as you buy something (which many people would do anyway)
Game stores vary depending on their spacing, but my local one likes us and will always fit us in around the magic players 😅
that would be ideal. although when there was a gaming store around here the table space was fun. but it was $5 per seat per session, which isn't ridiculous.
i know enough that i dont want to have a bunch of random people i've never met in my home.
My problem is that a server I'm in has a dedicated DnD campagin but they're American so it always happens at like 4am my time
TLDR; You either can be picky and potentiall never find a game or not be picky and lower your expectations and try harder to alter your perspective its the only real options here.
If I can give any advice? Be more picky, and be more open. It sounds like from an out of context out of field perspective? You want alot to talk around a water cooler with people who are just as invested in how you want to play as you are, but those people also have to be in person and around your area. Im not saying thats impossible? Just... Impractical to think itll happen.
Podcast games like....dungeon daddys, critical roll even Dimension 20 have an outside reason to care more. Because the viewers watching are invested. When you are at your table? The only ones invested are you and the people around you. Most people dont talk about their games to other people because the context, aura and table style is so unqiue to each table that its... silly to talk about. Which means that the level of investment HAS to come from people around you. BUT only wanting an in person game to get that? Is even harder. Becasue you have to source those connections locally, extremely in your case.
So You have two options here. Option one is online because it is the only real option here. You can find like minded equally invested and equally interested people. You need to get out of your own head or work around it to find it. So its to you to put in the effort, if thats what you really want (Maybe try using more descriptors or take more breaks maybe try improv acting classes to get that same energy your looking for that connection, or maybe try using a webcam?). You have that option, or be picky. If you know exactly what you want and wont settle for less then awesome, keep looking. Its not impossible, but if you truly can only find passion in the method you seek? Then keep going!

there we go. now they'll have a little notification thing that shows the reply, so they can read it instead of it being buried
there's got to be some discord out there for Europe, or any other continent.
I know and I wish we could find it to help our European Friends
I mean, I'm genuinely okay with playing online. I'm not strictly limited to face to face or physical games. The point is, I don't struggle with playing online itself. As soon as I get into voice interaction it's genuinely fine, I can express myself without much concern most of the time. The difficult part is the process before that. It's just that small talk phase in text chat before we actually get into playing that's the real barrier for me. and when i think about it, it's not really a big deal actually.
I don't really want this to turn into a my personal problem kind of discussion though. it a bit off topic, there are probably others who want to use this chat room to ask more relevant questions. But I do genuinely think I'll be able to overcome that barrier someday. I've already engaged in some small talk with others in looking for players, which is more than I could say for myself not too long ago , so despite things not ending up the way I imagined, I think it'll keep getting better eventually. tysm for the help ❤️
I know there are Adventurer's League specific servers focused on other countries, but not sure about D&D in general
Hello im new to D&D I've made a lvl one fighter.
welcome. let us know if u have any questions
Can a monk multiclassed into druid when shape shift use the monk bonus action to use an unarmed strike
I feel like it makes thematic sense but might be against some rule I haven't noticed
Believe so, you keep your class features
I mean that’s how much monks can do in one turn
Yeah but as a bear >;)
Touche
Nah something about this seems wrong
There's no way at level 3 I can turn into a giant squid, breathe on land, attack, deal damage, grapple and restrain them all with 1 action (excluding transformation)
Oh yeah, you'll not be able to do the listed attacks for either of those beasts if you're looking to use the monk features. Those features use unarmed strikes, which when used as a beast would likely be in the same ballpark as the usual monk unarmed strike damage.
Stil, you could still grapple them and then pummel a tonne with advantage!
Well, sure, but if we're talking about a giant squid, you're talking about moon druid level 18, so there's not much movement for multiclassing and it's at a very high level.
Oh, I realize that you probably meant the Giant Octopus. It's pretty alright.
Hey got a question so I was dm'ing(im really new to dming and d&d)
- but one of my clerics put voice of authority on the paladin and said he was able to move to hit the monster, is the paladin able to move like 20 ft to hit the monster or does he have to be melee range to hit it ?
Voice of Authority allows the ally to make a weapon attack. It doesn't say that this attack can be made over any distance, so all the usual stuff for attack goes.
The paladin could throw a throwing weapon, use a ranged weapon, or do a melee attack. But the target still needs to be in the range of the respective attack.
So basically hes not able to move but can swap to a weapon that is able to hit the monster ?
Form a strict rules perspective, not unless it's a thrown weapon.
(since thrown weapons can be drawn as part of the attack made with them)
hey i just got started with dnd any tips or things i should know

I'm new to the game and i have been playing a session i just quit and i was hoping someone with more experience htan me can answer a few quesitons
Like what?
like whether or not this is a common issue i had or if i just had unrealistic expectations or what i mean; to be perfectly honest i joined startplaying to well start playing the game and honestly there's been little to no real feedback, mentoring, understanding of how to navigate much. i'm learning everything on the fly, so issues and grievances with things within games is not something iknow much about either
Was there any discussion before the game started or was it just "sheets on the table, roll for initiative!"
Typically a Session Zero is where the expectations of play are shared and agreed upon. Aside from that, have you tried reaching out to the DM outside of game time with your concerns?
no i joined in the middle
and yes on numerous occassions
they didn't seem to, be on the same wavelength. they made attempts to address my concerns, but those attempts seemed to show a fundemental lack of understanding of what my concersn were and what i was saying
It’s really fun, do you know anything about it?
A dm that doesn't listen to their players is not doing a very good job
Nope :D
I’m fairly new as well tho 💔
You go through dungeons and fight dragons ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You can also make your own character and his/her background story to go along with the game.
I've made a character for DND and everything, I spent a few weeks on making her
That part is prob my favorite
hiya gents
i realized more often than not i was not having fun or being sidelined by the happenings and machinations of the pre-established story and the connection to it more seasoned players who were with him were. And i kind of felt like his attempts to try to force my background into the story; which is not what i asked for or meant when i said i'm not connecting with the story because i have little agency meant.
And lads
What’s up guys, I’ve only played DnD at a bar game night but I’ve wanted to play for years now. Someone said I should check discord for groups. Am I in the right place? I have no idea what I’m doing lmao
:P
Lol
:3

it felt like my choices, ideas, interactions didn't change or have any bearing on the story at large or outcomes. and the narrative was more designed to reward the long time players who were in the first season or campaign which this was a continuation of.

if this is not the place to ask for feedback on such things as a newplayer let me know.
