BG3 was very much built around the 2014 5e rules, but flexed a lil to work better as a video game. The rules were updated in 2024 to 5.5e but not a huge difference. the BIG difference is, you are truly free to make unlimited decisions, as it is real people interacting in the story the DM (Dungeon Master or Story Teller) is telling
BG3 does adapt dnd 5th edition mechanics. some changes, many things are the same. just dont expect the actual playing to work the same as a video game
Like i can do ANYTHING? Like im not limted to a select amount of subclasses or spells like in BG3?
There are still classes with subclasses. The Basic free side of the game is honestly more limited than BG3 but if u get in a good group, there are still 13 base classes but the subclass count can go up BIG time
there are a bunch more spells
There are still rules to assure a harmonious game for all of the players and DM that are similar to BG3 but your conversations, and places you go, and folks you interact with and how you interact is open
So it really depends on my DM and what kinda rules they're using? But what if I had a pre-made character who's Subclass isn't available in the version they're using? Will I have to make a new character to account for that?
Depends on what site you’re using or if its in person on paper. Like in DnD Beyond if you own the digital book and the DM has content sharing on, then they have access to it as well, I think Roll20 has something similar. If yer in person, you can spite your dm the source u used
And yes very often part or the whole answer to many questions will also be, depends on what your DM says lol
In general, you don't make a character and then find a game to play it in. You find a DM/group/game that's starting, you get the specific character creation criteria from that game's DM, and you build a character for that game (that follows that DM's criteria).
It's totally fine to have character ideas ready to go, or even to have whole characters that you want to play, already built. But be prepared to make adjustments to them to fit the rules of whatever game they end up joining. Every DM is a little different.
I've got 5 or 6 characters "ready to go" and another half dozen character ideas that I'd like to experiment with...but I don't expect any of them to start play exactly as is. They'll all need some little adjustments to fit them into whatever world they end up joining.
Hello, I am working on getting a dnd campaign for me and my friends, and as a somewhat new DM I was wondering what would be a good fantasy campaign for me to run.
I have some experience with dming, but not a lot. And my players all have some experience playing and don't mind a challenge.
how many spells can a level 2 wizard prepeare
cause from my understanding cantrips dont take spell slots, and you can prepare up to 5? not inclding your storage that is your spellbook that you can swap at any long rest
i have picked about 10 or so 3 of them are cantrips and i do see the cantrips in my character sheets but the spells aren't in the prepeared spells (they show up in the spell book)
Are you in D&D Beyond?
I have hired a DM to run a starter adventure for me and 3 or my friends. I am nervous about not having a deep - or even minimal - understanding of the world I will be entering. I was thinking about trying to find some narrative novels to help me understand the basic lore of the dnd universe. Is there a good place for a newbie to start?
Also is a "session zero" something that is always recommended? Should I request this of the DM?
Session 0's every time a new campaign is started, even if you already know the group pretty well. It'll give you the vibe of, in this case, the DM, go over any potential house rules or homebrew changes or whatever, what to expect in things like character death, the genre, etc etc etc. It's a red flag not to have one 95% of the time
yes
That information can be found on your Wizard class page:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Wizard
As per the Wizard class table you can prepare 5 Wizard spells. Your cantrips do not count against this limit; instead you are limited in how many cantrips you can learn from your class which is also on the table (3).
Also as per your spellcasting feature, you start with 6 level 1 Wizard spells and learn 2 of a level you can cast every time you level up. So at base your level 2 Wizard should know 8 level 1 Wizard spells, 5 of which you can prepare for the day. You can’t change your list of known spells every long rest, but you can change your list of prepared spells. Spells you learn via other means (e.g. the Magic Initiate Feat, Species Features) don’t count against the limit of what you can prepare nor against the limit of what you can learn.
D&D itself is just a ruleset, it accommodates many settings. If your DM is running a starter adventure the game will likely be set in the Forgotten Realms. You shouldn’t need a deep understanding of the world before playing, though it can always help develop your character. The starter adventure, your DM, and some of the little blurbs on each species & class in the Basic Rules should let you get acquainted enough with your game.
If you wanted to do a little more reading and become a lore enthusiast, you may want to check out the Forgotten Realms wiki: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
thank you
Welcome! Did you have a question about learning the game?
YO
Hey guy Is my DM being too particular i'm currently playing Paladin and my DM wont let me use the Fey version of find steed for misty step, he wont allow me to use a fey horse because a paladin (devotion of oath) would ever work with fey. Is he being abit particular or is this level of restriction normal for Oaths?
Restricting game features that you would normally have based on flavor reasons isn't normal, no.
Though I've certainly heard of DMs who do it. I'd bring it up to them out of game and let them know how you feel about it. Politely, of course.
If they don't budge, there is nothing to be done. They are running the game, after all. But you can then also decide if that's a dealbreaker for you and leave that table.
i wouldn't leave the dm is actaully pretty cool but for some reason he goes very heavy on what i can or can't do because of my oath
i got about a 5 minute lecture on why oath of devo and fey wouldn't worth together
That feels fairly arbitrary tbh. Fey aren't a monolith, apart from this being a class feature. Restricting class features like that is a big nono for me.
After all, I'm picking a feature for a reason. If I'd known that it would be restricted, I might have chosen otherwise.
Yea I'll have a chat with him, to me it seems abit silly why would i have the spell as a paladin if i couldn't use them to their full ability if there isn't a restriction on the spell description i don't get why
meowth walks up
Id understand it if you had e.g. oath of watchers but might i suggest asking which part specifically breaks the oath of devotion, as im not seeing anything that clashes there
should i be able to think if i have 8 int listed on my character sheet
Yes, 8 int is only slightly below average intelligence
like solving puzzles or making tactical maneuvers
ok 👍
He just says fey are tricksters or only do something to gain something or things like hags etc and a paladin wouldn’t work with creatures like that I don’t know enough about out dnd to know if that’s right or wrong
Its complicated, but also its literally summoning a horse under your control so like who cares
But I said bro it’s just a horse but it’s fey ?
I just want misty step lol and deco doesn’t get it
Devo*
Also does he allow the fiend type? I would imagine thats also not very paladiny
Nope
Just the strand horse then he claims that’s because paladins suck and there too restricted …. Brother you’re making the restrictions
Standard *
I couldn’t take infernal challenge because infernal implies demon and demons are bad =] I took compelled duel which is the exact same thing just a different name
8 int = slightly less smart than your average person
Like your not dumb so u can do kinda tactical stuff
Formal logic, history, mathematics, magical theory: not your deal.
Knowing how to go cover to cover down a crossbow gauntlet to hit the most important threat in a combat zone, the enemy wizard? Exactly your deal.
Hello
yeah, slightly
😹
Morning let us know if u have questions
Hi guys im trying to get me and my friend group into dnd, do you guys recommend d20 and other online tools? Or should I buy the starter kit
Or any other stuff
A starter kit would be a fair start.
For free though, you can get the basic rules and some adventures through D&D Beyond.

Online
And thanks for helping 😄
yeah, dndbeyond is likely your go-to place for official d&d stuff online. unless you like another virtual tabletop more. there's roll20, shard, foundry, and a few others.
Hello!
So I was wondering. I seriously want to rage bait others as my character and my dm told me to rise my charisma for that.
I will most likely be a rouge who can do some nifty cantips. And charisma can be used to cast magic no? So can I use charisma for both my magic and rage bait?
Only if your character has a feature for casting spells that uses charisma either through its class, background, or a feat
But yes you could potentially have a character that uses charisma skill checks to ragebait and to cast spells
Thanks
Thanks
Thankssssss
2014, I see short swords are light finesse does that count as dex
Do long swords exist
Yes, the finesse property means they can be used with Dexterity for the hit and damage rolls.
Longswords also exist, but they have versatile. They can be used with one hand or two, which increases their damage die.
More here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#WeaponProperties
Thank you!
hai everyone new to the channel here just read a bunch of stuff looking to eventually play through the resources available here. if anyone wants to chat shoot me a dm, kind of bored today..
Hii 👋
Howdy
anyone know why monks are read to be starting with a quarterstaff and hand weapons? i made a character in dnd beyond and i can't seem to put two and two together..
They're proficient with simple weapons, and martial weapons that have the light property, and these are called Monk weapons. They can use them while still doing their martial arts die for damage.
so you get a die for unarmed and a die for the quarterstaff?
all at once?
In what way do you mean, like multiple attacks?
Hi i wanna dm for my family cause i like dnd games and we’ve all played once or twice but ive never dm’d and aside from baldurs gate and divinity i have minima knowledge on the game. any advice or direction on where to start or go?
Read the basic rules over on dnd beyond
Not quite, you'd only get one roll for the attack.
However, there are features that a Monk has allowing you to add extra unarmed strikes. With that, you could whack someone with a quarterstaff using both hands for the d8, and follow up with kicks or other unarmed strikes using your martial arts.
a website called “dnd beyond”?
and is it long medium or short

quarterstaff. and dnd beyond is a phone app. highly qualified
this is for me?
so when you get more unarmed strikes you get more damage output and the quarterstaff servers as what then, extra rolls in the end?
yes, click the basic rules like and it should take you to the free rules on dnd beyond
all of that?!??
lol
You don't need to read all of it, but definitely read "the basics" under dungeon masters
is there a way to “build” the campaign on my computer or something for free to get a visualizer
In the above case, the first would be your Attack action with the quarterstaff, then spending a focus point to activate the Flurry of Blows feature (available from level 2) granting two unarmed strikes as your bonus action.
ok that's what i wanted. so why the five daggers, does anyone know?
Throwing.
Like the quarterstaff it has the versatile property offering the option for a two handed strike for greater damage potential.
Yes there are, but if it's your fiirst time DMing I'd recommend starting with a prewritten one-shot/module to get used to the mechanics of the game first.

Read it through, take notes of what you need to remember. What do the locations look like, who and what is important here, what's going on when the party come in?
that’s pretty much it? then have them make their characters and whatever and then start?
Pretty much.
This might help too: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-how-to-run-a-session-0-for-your-d-d-game
That way everyone should be on the same page when it comes to actually starting the adventure.
Im not really new but I'm stuck with finding a game to play
Have you checked out this server's Looking for Game/Group channels? Read #find-a-game if you haven't!
that's funny your name has lfg guide in it and that's what you just typed in for everyone lol
explain this to me
they are downloadable spreadsheets/books you get online or through the app
?tag new dice
Dice
Dice add randomness to the game. The 20-sided die (d20) is the most important one you’ll use. When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the game uses D20 Tests to determine success or failure. The higher your roll, the more likely it is that you succeed. The most common use for dice other than the d20 is to determine damage.
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, along with any numbers to add or subtract. For example, “3d8 + 5” means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total.
No idea about the DDB app, myself, but I can recommend Dungeon Scrawl and Inkarnate for getting started with maps. #dnd-maps can help with more.
I think you might be getting a few things mixed up.
There are websites where you can host visuals using battlemaps.
There are websites where you can create battlemaps.
No website, as far as I'm aware, do both. You'll have to create a battlemap, then host it on a different site.
ohhhh i see i see, can i host from mobile for free
(Roll20 can do both if you don't mind simple coloured shapes for a map, but not recommended for that method and definitely not on mobile)
i don’t mind but i need it to be mobile at least for the players
I believe most Virtual Table Top websites work quite poorly on mobile, unfortunately. Especially as the host.
how hard is it to have an irl board?
As hard as it is to draw on a piece of paper
It doesn't need to be hard! Some folks make do with a white board (or paper) and whatever small objects are at hand.
Easy peasy. Use a tape measure or printed grid set to 1" squares.
i see! does dnd beyond app help with rolls by chance as in telling me what needs to roll what
and can it keep track of health and actions/bonus actions
-# (That reminds me, I was going to look at sticky back plastic. I bet if I went over the grid on the backing with a Sharpie that'd show through to the front, and bang, rollable wipeclean grid. If it's close enough to the right size, anyway...)
Sure, rolls, hit points, spell slots, all tracked with DDB. Actions in a round, it'll at least tell you what they cost - but you only get like three, it's not something you need to "keep track" of.
This is what I was muttering about. Go over the grid with a dark pen, flip it to the shiny side, it should show through. Then use a dry-erase marker to draw your dungeon on.
Print tokens for characters and creatures, stick them to pennies, you're in business.
it’ll help my newer players, i’m new to irl dnd but i have slight context, the others have…played candy crush saga and mario party once or twice, they need something simple they can see and compare, like cards too lol
that’s a good idea
You could always grab the Heroes of the Borderlands starter set, which makes the first game much more tactile.
is it cheap?
I think it's around $50 US.
i have the storm wreck and starter set for the boxed campaigns and then a few cards

Hey there. ^^
As a monk unarmed strikes go with your level, if I grapple someone I can hit them, is that always a 1d4 or does it go up
What feature are you specifically referencing?
Hi, this might be a silly question but can characters be any race or just the ones DND Beyond gives us?
You can be any race, but a lot of those would be homebrew
What race were you thinking?
Uh 2014, I mean you can grapple someone, then you can make an unarmed strike while grappling to do 1d4, monk however has their martial arts die evolve going from 1d4 to 1d6 all the way to 1d10. Does the grappled unarmed strike evolve too
I really want to make a fae character
There are a lot of species related to fae
That come from the Feywilds
What do you want to be able to do?
I’m not sure, I’m really open to anything
Elves are related to fae in dnd and they’re in dnd beyond
When you grapple, you give up your unarmed strike’s damage
Thank you, I’ll look into it more
Nvm I misunderstood, anywho all your unarmed strikes go for your martial art die unless it states that it does a specific amount of damage
How it reads is that it’s just 1d4 but I’m having trouble finding it on mobile so I can’t reference lol
By this do you mean you grapple with one attack, then use your next attack to hit them?
Yeah, I remember it being worded like “while you’re grappling someone you can make a 1d4 unarmed strike”
When I get to my computer I’ll definitely pull it up
Maybe the Unarmed Fighting style? But that's just a d4 auto damage iirc
Looks like it to me.
There's pixies(Though due to their flight, some DMs may ban them), firbolgs, satyrs, centaur, eladrin are especially fae-elves, more than regular elves
Hellooo
hello! i’m a dm running my first campaign and im starting with session zero on friday! any advice or suggestions for what to go over?
As I have this handy:

Campaign pitch, tone and themes, safety tools, character creation. Oh, and don't forget to go over scheduling and what happens if you have an absence.
@wild onyx Hi
I was wondering if u knew if there was anyway to redeem the links in app
Cuz I can't recall my login details
That's between you and your password manager (or DDB's "forgot password" link), I'm afraid. Can't link content to an account if you're not logged in.
Try the website perhaps?
I'm logged in just can't recall them

Does anyone have favorite resources for shy roleplayers? I know truly everything there is to know about my character, but alas, I still feel very awkward practicing my character's voice aloud and freeze up thinking about his reactions to certain situations
i like looking up interview questions and trying to cold-open answer them in character
it ends up with a lot of talking to yourself, but that's a big part of practicing voices and acting lol
Ooh that's a good idea--like d&d specific ones, or just standard job interview stuff? lol
either one! normal interview questions are more plentiful online, but i know there's also a lot of character building prompt posts out there you can take from
If you're new to the game, even if you're playing with friends, it's very common for folks to take a while to warm up to playing pretend if they've fallen out of the habit (or otherwise had it discouraged). So you may just need time and increased trust!
Sort of in line with sinanis's idea, do some imagining, either mentally or on paper: present your character with a bunch of random scenarios and decide what they would do and why.
Another option is descriptive roleplay (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/adventuring#DescriptiveApproachtoRoleplaying) where you play the narrator for your character rather than act them out. It gives you a bit more distance from the character, which might make it easier to consider how they would react to a given situation.
Anyone running any discord campaigns and are willing to teach a semi newbie
Its all 18
Not surprised but bro
Is this server 18+ or some shit?
No, most just.. don't want to play with people who are under a certain age. Not really uncommon, I've also seen people not wanting to play with others who are above a certain age
No. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of teenagers here. But there's also reasons why adults may not want to play with people who are under 18 online, so games do tend to lean one way or the other
It's just about what DMs and other players are comfortable with. There's plenty of games that allow minors, you just need to search or wait patiently for a DM to post who's fine with it
Can you find players on this server? I'm looking for a group/DM

Ig
It just seems bs that I can't really find d&d
Plenty of other areas to search too. Plus you rarely get a hit right away anyways, it takes some time to search, then time to see if the DM meshes with what you're wanting, and then time to see if the group meshes well
Hello
In the character sheet on the attacks & spellcasting am I limited to only 3 attacks?? Including spells and cantrips?
Asking because my 9 y/o brother saw me reading the PHB and asked if he could make a character. The 3 things he requested were:
- nature
- police
- guns
What class and subclass should he take?
Hunter ranger could work I guess. Or maybe an Ancients paladin, but rangers tend to work better with ranged weapons imo
Thxx
Hi
No that’s just how the sheet formats the space for attacks. Think of it as a sort of cheat sheet for your most common attacks/spells. If you need more space you can just add it in manually. Otherwise you can just reference stuff like spells by having the Basic Rules on hand to see what relevant info you need.
It’s important to note that the character sheet is just a way to format all the information you need for your character; it’s not the rules itself
Welcome!
herlo helllooourr👀 👀 this all looks so intimidating omg LOL
How can I do spellcasting. Is there a spells should I saying during game

Here are the basics they should help you out
Druid
It's a harder class to play. I hope you have the '24 PHB because 1) Land Druid got a huge buff and 2) Stars Druid is included
I recommend those 2 subclasses for someone new to DnD
But really just play whichever (sub)class fantasy appeals to you
Stars Druid is already one of my favourites but I love Wildfire Druid
Can you recommend my an easy class
Well hello!
The easiest classes are probably non-spellcasters, is that alright?
Hey! Wassup! How are ya doin' fella?
I’m alive
Like what?
Fighters, barbarians and rogues are the first to come to mind. Monks are also cool
Likewise, hope your day is goin' well.
It’s been productive, just mildly tiring
I was thinking about one of those aswell. I just don't know the pros and cons of every character tho..
Glad to hear that
It’s gonna take a while to evaluate every class
I am on it 😅
Like, monks are fast and do good damage with stuns and good grapple/shove game. But they’re limited in range, don’t have too much synergy with magic items and rely HEAVILY on their resource
Barbarians hit hard, have a lot of health, can reduce damage by half from the more common damage types and are simple and easy to play. However, they’re limited and CANNOT cast while raging, are dependent on raging, and don’t have much use out of combat without consuming a valuable resource.
Fighters are more balanced, no glaring weaknesses or advantages off the top of my head
Rogues are great out of combat skills wise but are usually on the frailer side and while sneak attack is decent it’s just consistent damage. And you’re VERY weak if you miss or can’t sneak attack
Nugget
Monk?
Oh yes I’m a monk main
Ah makes more sense 😅
Love monks
Better look out, I sometimes become hungry 👀
If you are chicken I can rawdawg it, if you are golden I will craft you into golden carrots ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Anywho, got any idea what sorta class you might wanna try?
Yeah.. kinda but am still unsure..
Whatcha got so far?
I was thinking kinda like a warrior, who gets into the battlefield(frontline kinda thing) with some magical powers, is there something like that?
Like not heavy on magic, just mild
Eldritch knight is a fighter subclass that has a bit of magic
That sounds perfect
Paladins and rangers also have a bit of magic while being competent warriors
How can I get more info on that?
The specifics are in the Players Handbook
Yeah.. but I kinda wanna be in the frontline.
Paladins are GREAT frontliners
Is it too advance of a class 👀
Nope, it’s still a fighter after all
It’s on the simpler side all things considered
Ah, thanks for the help!! DM?
But for Free Rules, if not a paladin, you can totally do a fighter with some magic.
Rangers are also nice frontliners
I will look into it.
They’re less durable than fighters and paladins though, heads up
But they have more utility
Btw can I ask what's your characters name?
Versatile. Or warlock?
None, I’m a DM
Orion was my monk, but that games done
Would blade locks be too complicated?
You are, that's cool.
I thought I cooked something complicated..
Class, one option, nah. Do it.
Gish are what we call them
They’re a lil more complicated than fighters cuz you need to learn spellcasting rules, but they don’t lean into it enough to be too bad
I think I will take the newbie tag for now, lol 😅
Ooh Dang!! So if I become eldritch knight my weapon is bonded with me?? Like the blades of chaos??
I didn't knew he was eldritch knight||(jk)||
Key points of spellcasting:
- one per turn
- you have to see the target
- read the spell details
It's only a little more complicated than that, really.
Btw don't I also have to learn spell casting rules cause I have to cast protective/aggressive spells?
That's sounds simple enough, btw can I ask what class are you?
I play and DM.
That's cool, I kinda wanna be a dm somday, what class do you play?
Yes
This summarises it mostly
Also remember that prepared spells are what spells you can cast and spell slots are how many times you can cast spells of that level
Oh, anything. Warlock is probably my favourite.
a lot of DM's end up as 'forever DM's'
aka they dont really get to play the game as any class 😅
But they do get to play as literally every other character in the world.
Sorcerers are my favorite full caster I think. They're fun. That or clerics, I like both
And I can cast spells from wizard's spell list that I will find in player's handbook?
What have you played so far?
Aww, that kinda sad and fun at the same time, (I also don't know how that works)
Yes, though as a wizard, you also need to keep track of how many spells you have in your spell book.
So it's
Wizard spell list > your spell book > your prepared spells
So it's important to read the rules on that
dont worry, you'll learn as time goes on
i was also once in a spot where i knew almost nothing about dnd
and there are still many things i dont really understand
Yeah but I was thinking of eldritch knight. I don't think I am advance/prepared enough to go go wizard just yet 😅
Oh sorry my bad, I should have read further up.
Yeah.. ig
It's okay, don't worry. I don't expect anyone to read the whole conversation. I appreciate you helping tho.
Maybe you can help me out a bit more
For eldritch knight it's indeed a lot simpler. You pick spells from the (wizard) list, which are then permanently prepared. So you can't change which spells you picked until you get a level up, where you can replace one of the spells.
Also btw can I change spells that I've learned as I level up so I can cast a bit more advanced spells?
Oh that answers my question 😅
You can pick level 2 spells once you reach level 7, level 3 spells once you reach level 13 and level 4 spells once you reach level 19, so fairly high levels are required.
After all, eldritch knight isn't mainly a caster, just a fighter who knows some magic.
And those spells can be any spells? Even the advance ones?
I'm not sure what you mean by advanced ones. Level 2 spells are generally better than level 1 spells for instance.
Yeah that's what I was goin' for tbh. It's also kinda cool that my weapon can be bonded to me, tho I can't change it or anything if I get any other weapon like an adventurer or something.
Yeah that's what I meant, higher level spells/advanced spells.
spells have levels. you can prepare spells of the level if you have the spell slots for them (from that class)
So then that answers itself based on [this](#dnd-newcomers message), right? Or was there something that I missed here.
Oh so it's like lvl 1 fireball and lvl 2 fireball, I thought it was like fireball comes if lvl 1 category and meteor shower comes in lvl 3 category.
It was just an example,..
So it is like the latter?
I basically am trying to understand how spell levels work 😅
I am new, like really really new, like a newborn when it comes to DnD
So I apologize if it seems little off
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells#SpellLevel
Every spell has a level from 0 to 9, which is indicated in a spell’s description. A spell’s level is an indicator of how powerful it is. Cantrips—simple spells that can be cast almost by rote—are level 0. The rules for each spellcasting class say when its members gain access to spells of certain levels.
Spellcasting is taxing, so a spellcaster can cast only a limited number of level 1+ spells before resting. Spell slots are the main way a spellcaster’s magical potential is represented. Each spellcasting class gives its members a limited number of spell slots of certain spell levels. For example, a level 3 Wizard has four level 1 spell slots and two level 2 slots.
When you cast a spell, you expend a slot of that spell’s level or higher, effectively “filling” a slot with the spell. Imagine a spell slot is a groove of a certain size—small for a level 1 slot and larger for a higher-level spell. A level 1 spell fits into a slot of any size, but a level 2 spell fits only into a slot that’s at least level 2. So when a level 3 Wizard casts Magic Missile, a level 1 spell, that Wizard spends one of four level 1 slots and has three remaining.
think of spell slots like coupons. you get a certain amount of those per day and can trade them for spells you know.
some spells require the higher level coupons (like fireball needs a level 3 slot)
you can always use a higher level "coupon" for a lower level spell though, like you could use a level 2 slot for a spell like burning hand or Shield (which are level 1 spells)
Some spells even get stronger when you do this. that is called upcasting.
I will be checking it out 😁
So! What I'd suggest here is taking a look over the free rules, see what your initial options are like. For a fighting type with some magic that points you towards ranger, paladin or warlock.
Give them a glance over, see what you think might be fun, then come back here with your choice and we could help prepare a starting character.

Thank you sooo much!!! This makes it a lot easier. I didn't knew I could upgrade my slots..
The eldritch knight isn't free rules?
no its in the players handbook. the only free fighter subclass is the Champion
Hi
What if I just get it?
Greetings!!
Greetings!
Wdym?
If you get access to the PHB from someone else, you could use it like that (for example a friend lends you their book or your DM shares the books they own on DnD beyond with their campaign)
What's goin' on?
If I purchase the book? Then I can be eldritch knight?
sure
That's good, I am trying to figure out my new character.
still gotta find a game for the character concept first of course
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Yeah.. I have zero idea but if you were to find you get everything, so I will try.
I Already Played Once Before, I Have A Character, I'm Just Trying To Get Back Into DND
We can even practice with the character?? This is a lot fun than I first anticipated 😭
Yeah I am having fun. Will like to see what you lead
Feel free to have a look at the #channel-guide for the full range of discussion areas.
@wild onyx good morning
G'day. What's on your mind?
Hello hello, im relatively new to dnd, and i have trouble taking notes and remembering stuff but im a dm, does anyone have any tips, honestly anything helps
just wondering if i should be a dm or not
Outsourcing
Yes.
Rehearse your NPC dialogue and descriptions. Prepare bullet-point lists of important details. Use images where you can.
Let the players write a session recap, but also just make some quick notes yourself of locations/npcs/activities that happened
I'd advise getting some player time in first.
you should know who you are playing with and make sure they understand how to properly roleplay. Roleplay is up there on the most important things to be on the same level with people with..
im old-school back to 3.5e but i really like the new look and feel of the 5.5e
i feel like i could whip out a few campaigns
Okay, thank you so much
It sounds like you have the experience generally to DM, but you might want to play a little 5.5e just to make sure you understand the system
what should i look for while playing a pc?
I guess just anything the DM is doing that you'd want to replicate? Idk quite what you mean by that.
Get a handle on how the core mechanics work. The d20 is the same, but many bits have evolved.
i am reading the free-cost manual on D&D Beyond app on ios
Five Room Dungeon method, three linked adventures, there's a campaign.
adventurers or adventures?
Three scenarios.
Hi uhh, so looking for possible DMs willing to like do a few DND runs wit me and my friends and what not, still trying to confirm who would want to play but this would generally be our first time playing dnd
- Cultists have abducted folk from the village and are performing cruel rituals in their forest lair. Can the PCs save them, even those who might have been transformed into monsters?
- Evidence recovered from the lair leads the PCs to a town where a prominent person is implicated with the cult. Can the PCs get proof without all ending up in jail?
- A massed monster attack on an outlying village sees the PCs on the front lines, trying to save folk from disaster while also bringing the mastermind behind the cult to justice.

(For instance)
how about cultist vampires?
Thanks
That was off the top of my head, feel free to go any way you like with it. The core idea is to have a situation in an interesting location where the party encounter opposition and a complication. Tie the three scenarios together with a common thread (in the above, a cult making monsters) and that's a campaign.
If you want more, do another three.
It's so hard to get into a group as a newbie since I'm asleep during the day TvT it's because I work night shift and I'm EST
I really want to get into it but it's so freaking hard since I'm always late to respond or something

I need help from someone with making my first DND character
Helloo
Yo
Sure! Have you seen the free rules yet?
Not yet
My dm said to me to distribute the points 8 10 12 13 14 15
The standard array, excellent. Got any thoughts about a class yet?
I have no idea if necromancer is a class otherwise just sorcerer
Necomancer is a subclass for Wizard that you can select at level 3
You can make a wizard with necromancy as a focus, but that doesn't really get going until you get to level five.
Sorcerer is a fine pick, plenty of magic and strong at it.
?tag new sorcerer
Sorcerer
Wield magic innate to your being, shaping the power to your will
Sorcerers wield innate magic that is stamped into their being. Some Sorcerers can’t name the origin of their power, while others trace it to strange events in their personal or family history. The blessing of a dragon or a dryad at a baby’s birth or the strike of lightning from a clear sky might spark a Sorcerer’s gift. So too might the gift of a deity, exposure to the strange magic of another plane of existence, or a glimpse into the inner workings of reality. Whatever the origin, the result is an indelible mark on the Sorcerer, a churning magic that can be passed down through generations.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 10
Dex. 13
Con. 14
Int. 8
Wis. 12
Cha. 15

Complexity: High
Starting HP: 6 + Con. modifier
Has your DM mentioned whether they're running 2014 or 2024 rules?
No he is new to being a dm
Could a sorcerer also work?
Try find out which rules they're using then, as the some rules and abilities have changed
I just asked him and he said his rules cause he doesn’t really know them
I wonder if the DM knows the difference yet. Would definitely recommend the newer rules for a new one.
Yeah he just said 2024
Oh good
Animate dead isn't a sorcerer spell by default. Wizard or cleric would be my picks there.

Hey just double checking, how do I enable sharing my books in a campaign as a player? I have the master tier subscription, and bought / downloaded/ updated the books.
I don't know the answer off-hand myself (I don't use DDB that much), but I'm sure the folks in #ddb-support can give you precise instructions!
Once you've created a Campiagn on D&DB you'll got to "My Campaigns" and there should be a Box somewhere in the top left area of that screen that should give you the option "Enable Content Sharing" or something similar
Afaik you can't do this on the app. I may be wrong but just to be safe I'd attempt it on the website itself.
Oh I missed a step. It's "My Campaigns" THEN click on the actual campaign that you want to enable sharing. Then go to the box on the top left area to enable sharing. It'll be right across from the invite link box I believe
tell us more.
cool.
That's all I got
Me and a few friends want to try dnd for the first time, we are all new to the game, and I'm the DM, got any tips?
My quick version of DMing:
-
Learn the game rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), at least broadly.
-
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do some—emphasis some—reading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!
-
Don't feel like you have to memorize everything to get going. Jump in, make mistakes, learn from them!
Thanks
I have proceeded my research even further, and now I think I know what I wanna be. If someone is able to help, feel free to ping me.
Sure!
Whatcha got now
I felt like I was being too hasty and going for too much their, I thought maybe why not start with something simpler, sweet, innocent, and charming.
Alright, that’s reasonable
Let's go berserker
lol got ya there 😂, and btw I do think I will be starting from there
Nice
Tell me about it (a big barbarian just watching down at me as I say that)
Your next step is either making a practice character, finding a game, learning the rules more, or all of the above
Practice character?
Making a character for practice to learn how to make one properly before you get into an actual game
Basically just making a character, likely without intention of actually putting it into a game
To get the feel and understanding of actually making a character
I don't really have any idea that how to even start on that, should I go to the website? Should I go to the app? Should I role the dice? Or point by(idk what that is)?
Like I might be looking to deal with at this point.. I understand that..
Go to dnd beyond and make a character on there using the standard array
It's just.. that it's my first character so idk anything
I think you should consult us about creating your character
Hey this is perfect timing, I'm super new but what is a good website or app for practicing character writing and creation??
D&D Beyond on app store for your phone

Take care and have a nice rest of your day.
That's what I was trying to do..
honestly a great place to ask about characters (if it is already created) is in #character-discussion, if you are trying to get help creating it, (if you havent) read the basics in the bot a few messages up. it has some great info on character creation. Then if u have specific questions you are confused about ask away.
I actually did read about the basics.. it made me confident enough to follow along and try to create a new character.
Awesome!!! If you want folks to look it over and discuss it further, they love doing that in #character-discussion lol
That's nice, I appreciate the help 😊
hello, im completely new to the game, lowk found it after watching stranger things, is it hard to learn how to play?
The books make it look much more intimidating that it actually is, and it's actually pretty easy when you get the hang of it! Basically you roll a 20 sided die, and add numbers to the result, and that's 90% of the game right there, and the rest is usually included in your abilities 😌
Check out #learn-to-play for free rules and other useful resources!
ooh okok thx!
This other guy was new
Consider reading free material to start off
I am also new, and I was pinged that's why I misunderstood

find yourself a group. FOllow the easy steps in the bot to find a group and or post about what you are looking for (best route, so DMs see what your availability and expectattions are
I just want my first campaign to be fun with a creative story behind it.
You will find most of them are lol.... But you have to put the effort into finding one. There is TONS of players and LIMITED DMs so it takes some work and patience
First I will have to find a group aswell, no?
Thats what I was meaning yes
hello all
Hey Lego
so im making a juggernaut warforged character with juggernaut for a subclass what weapon should i go with if im probably gonna be doing unarmed or something or the sort
and what class would be solid for it
Great axe is a traditional barbarian weapon choice - just a good old "do a good chunk of damage" weapon.
alr than you
cause its just me and one other person so im gonna be mor eupfront taking most of the damage so im just trying to figure out what i should do so i dont die in 2 seconds
barbarians can be notoriously hard to down so I think you'll likely be fine

Ok...if I am in the wrong channel please lmk. I am creating my first character and I am confused about the PHB rules. I am creating a rogue and in the character class chapter (pg 129) it says that "you know Thieves' Cant and one other language of your choice." In the creating a character chapter (pg 37) it states "Your character knows common plus two languages you roll or choose from the Standard Language table.
So Class chapter says Thieves' Cant plus one.
Create character chapter says Common plus two (and class might also give you languages)
Does that mean Common plus two plus one? Does it mean Common plus two Standard and Thieves' Cant plus one Rare? Do they overlap, meaning Common plus Cant plus one?
Help
The ones you get from rogue are additional languages, and its specific to rogue, and not every class gets languages. The ones you get from your race, which always include common, are what everyone has
So in total, you would have Common, Thieves Can't, and three additional ones of your choice
hii guys!!
Hallooooo
how do i play dnd with people lel

How does reaction work do i lose my action on my up-coming turn or do i have to of held my action then end my turn to be able to react?
I tired googling it and i get mixed answers
Reactions are specific actions you can take on other people’s turns. It’s a seperate thing from actions and bonus actions
really, so i don't have to of held an action on my last turn ? It' just it's own thing?
that’s referring to the Ready action
oh okay cool thank you
i forcefully tried to understood
Hello
Howdy. What's on your mind today?
I want to know if the characters needs to be created or I can use already created characters
Like a fictional character
You should create characters based on the game rules for best results - but that the character concept can be inspired from other media
(Quickly deleting what I was writing there)
Sure, you can use an existing character as inspiration.
The trick is identifying what parts of that character you can replicate in D&D, while also ensuring that it fits the setting provided.
Do you have one you're thinking about?
Hello
Howdy. Let us know if u have questions
Alright. He's got some strengths, sure. What would you want to try and bring across?
(And while you're pondering that, what makes them a good fit for the world of heroic fantasy adventure? I've got an idea but don't want to spoil it.)
Well he is a programmed assasin
He can disguise
He can use instinct
He is really good at using guns and distractions
Okay, let's hit those in order:
Disguise: easy. The Deception and Disguise Kit proficiencies, or spells like disguise self or alter self.
Instinct, aka Hitman vision: bit more tricky but Perception proficiency and the Alert feat could do.
Guns: not a common thing, but there are workarounds.
Distractions: there are plenty of items that can be found in the equipment list that can be used for that, plus spells of the illusion school.
Well greetings everyone!
Think a rogue or possibly a warlock could help get to where you're going with this. Why not hit up the free rules and take a look at what those classes offer?

Helloo guys erm how does one actually start playing dnd on text 💀
You can search for "pbp" which stands for play by post to find helpers on that. If you want to get a look at how it can look like, the DDbeyond forums have quite an active pbp community:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/play-by-post
Each thread here is a separate group/adventure
And now where do I send the character sheet ?
helooo
If you’d like your sheet reviews feel free to share it here or in #character-discussion !
If you made it on D&DBeyond you can send the share link. If you made it via some other method (e.g. physical, PDF) you can upload the sheet to a trusted file sharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that!

Hello
We are kinda at the start of our character building and we have a new ability score
Engineering ability score. It's like strength and wisdom etc.
This is a homebrew campaign
But here is the thing, with normal blank sheet we have strength, dexterity, charm, Wisdom, constitution, intelligence.
How can we add extra ability score?
Is it a physical sheet or online/pdf?
Online sheet
Thank you.

Hello again
I have built a character sheet
But one question, for spellcasting I used charisma as spell cast ability
What is spell save dc and spell attack bonus?
What to fill in those?
Spell attack bonus proficiency bonus + spellcasting ability mod
And save dc is 8+prof bonus+ spellcasting ability mod
(Mod being modifier)
So what’s your level and charisma stat?
Ty. The rules are in the link above
Okay my cha is 14 and modifier is 2+
And your level?
Your spell save DC is 12 and your spell attack modifier is +4
Proficiency bonus is +2 at level 1, so it’s 8+2+2 for DC and 2+2 for spell attack modifier
Thank you. Can you explain them? Rules make it...to complicated
Explain how I got them or what they do?
What they do
When you cast spells, it often calls for either an attack roll, or force the enemy to do a saving throw. If it’s a spell attack roll, you roll a D20 and add the spell attack modifier on top of that
If it’s a saving throw, the enemy must roll to me it beat your spell save DC or suffer the full effects of the spell
Does that make sense?
So since my save dc is 12
If they roll less than 12 they get fully hit?
Also for spell attacks. And every attack. Is a d20
But if there is necrotic damage is there an extra 1d8?
All technicality makes me slightly confused.
A spell attack roll is a d20 yes. As for the necrotic damage wdym?
Well like shadow magic. Shadow ball deals 3d8 necrotic damage.
...is that different? That is different.
Okay confusion I have returned to you.
Is this a specific spell?
So the enemy rolls a dexterity save, and if they fail the save they take 1d6. If they succeed they take no damage
It is. I think.
Important to note you don’t add this modifier to the damage unless specified otherwise, only the ‘to hit’ roll
3rd party maybe since I don't recognize that one. But regardless, if the spell says it's a save than the target makes the d20 roll
Hmm...can you show me action? Like I use cha for casting acid splash
You only make attack rolls with spells if they say you do
You would use charisma if it’s your casting stat yes
Okay now I understand the Spell save
So say you were using it on me, I’d have to roll a d20. As I just rolled a 4, I’d fail the save and take 1d6 damage
Is this right? Strength = 8 modifier = -1
Dexterity score = 13+2=15 modifier = +2
Constitution = 14 modifier =+2
Intelligence = 11+1=12 modifier = +1
Wisdom = 15 modifier = +2
Charisma = 10 modifier = 0
Cha is my casting ability
Yes
Just a 1d6 damage?
Ye
K thx
What about my ability modifiers
What about them?
I have 2+
Oh that
^
Also for spells do they use a different die than the d20
Usually only for damage
So I need to speak with dm?
No, you just don’t add your charisma modifier to your damage
Whats the difference between looking for players vs looking for community?
Honestly spells really really confuse me. I barely understood what and how spell slots work
What about d100 what do there?
We often roll the equivalent of 2d10’s, one for the tens and one for the single digits
Ok
Looking for Players is where DMs post for a game: a one-shot or an ongoing campaign. A community post is a Discord with many players and DMs, which may be in a sort of living world or just might be a pool of folks who play when availability matches up.
So how do players find a.. dm?
It’s a bit more complicated yeah. Think of it this way:
You have an attack bonus to determine how accurate you are
You have a spell save DC to determine how hard it is to resist your spells
The rest are just what your spells say they do
You post in #looking-for-dm by following the instructions in #find-a-game!
Type in /looking-for dm and fill out the form
Ooooooohhhhh
Okay let's see if I got this straight
K
The bonus thing is just how good I'm at that thing and likely to succeed.
Save dc is how likely I'm to blow them up and how much they need to get to save their buts.
And if a spell says it is a 1d8 fire damage like fire bolt, with a 14 cha,2+ bonus. If they fail the save dc. They get hit with 1d8 damage?
...I'm lucky my dm found me;-;
So community is you play when you can and same for dm and other players, meaning you might have different dm and players? Vs looking for dm?
Firebolt is a spell attack roll. Not a saving throw
...
It can be like that yeah. Looking for community is for dnd servers while looking for players is for a specific game
Okay it is an attack. And says it deals 1d8 fire damage
The rest was correct
So you’d roll a d20 and add +4 to the roll, and match that against my AC
Is looking dm a better way to start as a new player?
OOOHHHHH
I’d say try both
Okay that makes sense
You also wouldn’t add anything to the d8, fyi
Say, I got an 18
You got 17
And save dc is 12
Fire bolt damage is 1d8
What happens?
On your saving throw
You roll a 18, my AC is 15. You beat my AC, so you roll 1d8 for damage.
Do you know what AC is?
I forgot;-;
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC.
Oh. Yea now it makes sense. What if i roll 13?
You roll a 13, your modifier brings it up to 17 which beats my 15 AC so I still take damage
With modifier I get 13. Then what?
Then you miss and I don’t take any damage
Thank you so very very very much
Yes! I think I learned that
Do you know the spellcasting rules for casting multiple times a turn?
So I have 3 spell slots. I have 1lvl spells. I use 1 1lvl spells and one spell slot is used so I have 2 now
Yup
....huh?:0
Better to learn now than later. Do you know what game version you’re playing in?
Specifically 2014 (5e) or 2024 (5.5e) rules
Hm. I'm in a homrbrew campaign. And have a class that's a rouge shadow mage
Im trying to send if looking for dm but im not shure how to input info ie if im new etc
It uses shadow points to cast spells
How do u know what version?
Ah, that’s why I’m not familiar with the spells
The DM usually decides it
Basically spells can cost 1 SP or 2 SP
if I have 3 shadow points I can cast both?
Even homebrew campaigns should be based off a version. But if you dunno you can always learn that rule later
If it's homebrew, you likely will have to talk to your DM for the specifics
Yup
I can’t help you with homebrew rules unfortunately
Thank you
Thank you still. I need to ask about this to my dm
Hmmm. Is there anything else?
I'm trying to remember if I had any other questions...any tips?
My abilities are 10,10,10 ,14 ,14 ,17. High elf.
Like overall?
Yup
Be nice to the DM and the other players
Don’t go past boundaries
Don’t attempt to test or annoy the DM for no reason
If possible bring your own dice
Know what your character can do, please (it helps the game progress faster and prevents disputes because you don’t understand the ruling)
COMMUNICATE
Figured out
Noice
Noice. My dm is pretty cool and we talked bout the possibility of teddy bear with a machine gun and he said he had same idea
Also noted for knowing what my character can do.
Oh! I almost forgot too
...sweet! XD
So for my spell save dc and spell attack bonus they get changed as I level up no?
Now they are
Spellcasting modifier:2+
Spell save dc:12
Spell attack bonus:4+
Yup
So when my charisma becomes 17
How do they change?
I have a question if I can make my character this- id like if my character could be Deaf
I think you can do that
The formula is 8+prof bonus+spell mod (+3)
So it’d be 11+ your proficiency bonus
K
I’d usually advise against it
Why?
Communication is one of the most important things in dnd, and being deaf makes it very difficult to do that effectively
Welp no different from my life lol, but if could make it so my character has a device that allows her to hear, and only time wouldn't is when the device is off or broken.
Hello. Are you interested in playing with us?
Then that’s fine, could be fun. Run it by your DM
Mabey when would matches be etc?
K cool
Soliciting for games isn’t allowed outside of the proper channels btw
Speak with my dm for details. Here-
That's his username
Huh? This is dnd game?
K
Like we are lacking in players
Like organising or looking for games isn’t allowed
Oooohhhh! Sorry!
I just don’t want you to get smited lol
Uh yeah, thanks 😅
But discussing it is? Lol
Thems the rules
Let's go to that channel thingy
...where is channel?
#looking-for-dm probably
Ik ik just find sometime the rules to be bit... out there or sorta backward conflicting
Or DM’s
...I...can't write there
I will dm you
K
Also, seriously thank you bro 🫂
No problemo
Hi I’m wondering could I have a kalasthar who is blind but can “see” through their quori?
Ask your DM - ultimately it's up to them if that makes sense at their game/campaign.
Ok thanks
But I was wondering if it was possible
Again ask your DM - it's only possible if they say it is.
As far a flavor goes yea that's fine. But if you wanted any unique benefit or quirk then definitely ask the dm
Ok

Hiya guys
I haven't played dnd before
My friends do they said learn the basics and come to play with us
So what do I need to learn to get through the campaign
Remember I know nothing
had any approach in some games like Baldurs gate, mewgenics, diablo, etc. etc?
No not a one
okey, then lets start with something basic that will slowly help to understand
Or how i started and learned
Lets make your character.
Any fantazy idea you have in mind or smt like that?
Okie I am listening
Like class or just the character?
Call it an orc that go with no armor to the battle holding big weapons in each hand
An elf using a bow and shooting arrows from distance and being agile
Anything, an idea that is in your head, something you saw from a movie, book, game, etc. etc.
Does entomancers exists in DND?
What would be an Entomancer? i might know if there is something like that but dont know that term
Like it's a wizard who uses bugs to fight
Ento=bug
Mancer is like necromancer pyromancer
As in those
okey, there is something like that but not a Wizard perce
There is classes, each class have their features and specialize in some stuff.
Each class fit into a category
Martial's (people who dont use magic like base concept but mostly their martial features)
Fighter, Barbarian, monk and rogue
Casters (Characters who use magic like principal concept and work around it)
Wizard, cleric, bard, druid and
Hybrid (Classes that use either magic and their martial features)
Paladin, Ranger, Warlock and artificer.
Each class have his ways to be played and limits. You dont need to know what every one does, but have an idea would help
Druid and ranger seems interesting
And each class posses sublcasses that add a layer of stuff, either giving them magic, upgrade some features or give them features that are around an idea
Subclasses? Damn everything you say something a new layer appears to this
Yep, each one of the 12 classes have them and they do that, again, you dont need to know everything about EACH one of them and its totally okey being able to read your stuff.
But have in mind a bit what your class do so you arent all the time checking, with time you will remember them.
For example i picked high elf whose class is druid and background is sage
They're still races too
Yep, but that is another thing
A character most of the time is
Race
Backstory
Class (and in some future unlock the subclass)
Equipment//Feats
Like im elf with subrace of high elf
I think I would play an
A lone elf traveler who is a druid
What is equipments and feats
okey okey, remember that each Race have its features too
+1 or 2 to some stats, nightvision or some resistances, etc. etc.
Be always open to read the stuff and take your time to understand it
Is there like a handbook I can read?
Also with what I selected I have 6 languages
Yep, there is the page DnDBeyond where you could find a players guide that will introduce you to DnD
Yes def take your time and think about who u want to be in the campaign
Okie will do
Class selection is one of the most fun parts of character creation imho
I always recommend to have an idea at first, like "i want to be a guy who use mostly fire spells and want to burn things" and slowly adapt it to a Character
And i always recommend too "Less is more", so having a basic concept is better than complicate yourself with so complex stuff
I just looked at how many races in DND and holy hell
I want to be a wizard or a archer I like em
if you googled it, yeah, there is a lot.
But i will stop that train and tell you there is a difference between RACES and Playable Races.
What you mean playable races
You can play like an elf, orc, etc. etc.
But in base game, you cant play like a Minotaur, or a giant, etc. etc.
What about a filborg that seemed interesting
*firbolg
The game have like we would call it "DLC's" that are extra books for every edition
Each book either add stuff to things already made, like races or subclasses or add content in general (regions, enemies, equipment,etc.etc.)
Each book?
Yep, think that DnD is like 50 years old or more. So everything, rules, worlds, etc. etc.
Was and is in books
There is older editions, like the first and second and third.
Actual editions are the 5e, that is pretty friendly to new players.
50 year...
Thankiesss for help franco imma go and read the handbook
Also one last question
How do you learn spells if you're a spellcaster class
Each spellcaster class have a list of spells and would tell you which level of spells you have access and which spells
A cleric can access to Guiding bolt but other classes cant (At all, that is a whole other thing you will learn in a future)
Most spells you'll use will become available as you level up
You would just see the list, how many you can Know and finally pick whichever make you happier
explained in either the PHB or the Basic Rules found on dndbeyond
Enjoy the read, if any question this place have always people available to answer them
Spell slots took me forever to figure out LOL
learned to view it in some... weird ways
I learnt a gun analogy
You have spell slots, that are the capacity of your gun
Each level of them is a bigger caliber
You can shoot a lvl 1 spell in a lvl 3 caliber making it get upgraded in some ways
You can make your spells stronger but never weaker
Each caster class have its... ways to work around it
Wizard get a lot of bullets and access to many kinds of them
Sorcerer can manipulate and change the spells to adapt them to its needs
Warlock get powerfull spells and few but they recharge easier than other classes
Cleric, bard, artificer most of time work with supportish spells
Druid and ranger is the weird guy that use nature magic
First campaign I ever tried we were all new so spell slots were just... ignored on accident. Didn't end up mattering since I just spammed eldritch blast but like... yeah lol
Hey never played d&d before would like to not sure how to start tho or get people to play with my therapist said it was a good way to meet new people so here I am would like some help would be appreciated

What is a Dungeon Master?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
How does it work?
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.

Hello
I have a question about selfcast and self magics
Like some have the range of 30ft. Some 60ft.
Some are self. Some are selfcast
Does the self range mean it can only be cast on myself...or on those that are close to myself as well?
Self means only on yourself, if it said touch or has a range then you can choose others or yourself
Have you got an adventure prepared?
What about enchantment? Like enchanting a weapon but range is self
Can I...grab my party weapons...then enchant them?
Howdy Mr smith
Find an example spell and we'll see.
How are you?
Howdy Noctis. Another fine day in the mines.
Oh hello lad
What's up?
Hey wassup! How ya doin'?
I also had to share this with nugget aswell!!
I have found my first campaign!!
And our first session will be starting soon!
Alive
Ah, good job. Any thoughts on what kind of character you'll be bringing?
Congrats! Got it faster than many I know
Drain (Enchantment)
Casting time: 1 Action
Range: Self
Components: M (A melee weapon)
Duration: 1 Minute (Concentration)
Level Gained: 11th Level
At 11th level you can enchant weapons with life draining. Upon dealing damage with an enchanted weapon you gain HP equal to half of the HP that the target lost.
So much faster than me😭
I have waited 2 years
You could grab an ally’s weapon, enchant it and give it back to them
That’s longer than most
Yup. It's still your concentration though, so bear that in mind.
Indeed
....huh?
You see how it says the spell requires Concentration?
Yes
Yeah they are a barbaric elf. I have also written (a part of) their backstory.
Think it's just a luck 😅.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#Concentration
Important to know about.
That means you can’t use any other spell that requires concentration when you’re casting it without losing its effects and have to roll each time you take damage to keep its effects active
Oh? A barbaric elf? :0
Sweet. Whats the backstory?
Ohhhh
Thank yooouuuu
Thanks smirth Mr!
I cast "Happiness"!!!
I am happy! I am also alive
Oh also guys
It is kinda long.. Should I share write it in my character sheet and share it?
That's good, I am glad to hear that!
Like I lost motivation to look for parties ti join after looking for a while back then.
But now after I joined one(thankfully my dm found my dumbback;-;) I want to look for other dnd campaigns too in the future. How do I do that? It's been a while and memory is foggy
Write a three sentence version
It would be great thing to share over in #character-discussion

I am not creative enough to summarise it in 3 lines 😅
Thank yoooooooouuuuu
i suggest to focus on these three questions:
- Who are they
- How did they get their powers/abilities/training?
- Why are they adventuring
Thought Mitcho Mancho’s right this is probably the wrong channel
(I'd make 1 their early years, origin or upbringing personally - save word count for the parts that are already on the sheet)
Huh...interesting. now I have more ideas for my background.
That’s not my name but yes this channel is for new folks to ask questions about the game. Character talk once created is great in that channel because many folks watch it to help in more depth
Wait...I remember you too!
Hello mitcho san! How have you been?
We sidetracked 😅
I am well thank you.
Oh that’s mb.
-# I always read it wrong somehow
I will reply in character channel, hope that's okay 😊.
Hi new, I’m Nugget. Good morning afternoon evenin’

would recommend creating an account on dnd beyond and just having some fun with the character creator, also do what mitcho chano said
Do check over the free rules first and try picking a class, species and background for your character before you fire up DDB. The app has many options that won't all be relevant to you when starting off.
What is DDB?
Ah
Got it
Hello everyone!!
Before I introduced myself I have one question. How do I set a server nickname?
Hello everyone!!!
heyyyy nice to meet you!!
Nice to meet you too. How are you?
good and how are you?
great to hear!!
So, does this server ever host any games?
some times. theres a tap called looking for players. you can find a dm there who's looking for players to play a campaing
Thank you! ^^

Also, I have an idea for a knife called "the bard's blade". Basically you use illusion to make it seem like gold, then give it to an enemy as persuasion, last when they are holding it you make it set off and the blade comes out the side cutting off their fingers.
hello
cool
hii hii
Hellooo
i am having a good day. and you?
i'm having a lzy day but pretty good thank you!!
hiii how r u
my knowledge of dnd comes from the 11 hour long videos i binge watch on youtube soooo i'll be lurking around 👀

awh thanks!! i'll go look around then!!😁 ✌️
i'm good thanks just lazing about
Nice
are vampires a level 1 party fight
Idk, sorry
what combat class at most can 4 level 1’s handle
class? hmmm
rating?
combat level?
No, they're CR 13. You generally don't want to send anything higher than CR 1 at a level 1 party.
oh good lord
CR stands for Challenge Rating. The easiest way to get a handle on it is to try out kobold fight club here: https://koboldplus.club/
scary link
It's not scary, but

any tips on dming for someone who’s awkward talking normally so it’s worse for roleplaying
As someone who is also awkward but has been DMing for a while now: instead of acting out a scene, you can always describe it. This is called descriptive instead of active roleplay.
how about for conversations with npcs
Imagine the difference between
DM (acting like a goblin): "What you got there goody-two shoes? Huh? Wanna pick a fight?"
and
DM (describing): "The goblin asks you rudely about why you're here."
Instead of roleplaying the NPC's, you can talk as yourself instead of the NPC
Example: "the bartender asks if you heard about the orcs in town"
Deva beat me to it 😅
Always good to have more examples!
is this still engaging enough to reel people in and get them into it? i’m also trying to dm for people who’ve never played a dnd like game or video game
It is, in my opinion!
i think that highly depends on the player, but the answer is often yes
Taking into account that people may have different preferences, yes, for sure. I've been doing a mix of active and descriptive roleplay for years now and my players always seem to have fun regardless.
is one objectively better to most to act instead of describe or do people not care for the most part?
I don't think it's objective no. It's a preference argument.
and from there it’s just a conversation of i do this i do that i do this i do that but me as npcs and them as the pc?
But what you could perhaps say is that people are maybe slightly more immersed if everyone acts out their character instead of roleplaying? But even then, some people might not like it.
Generally, the basic flow is:
- DM describes a scene
- Players say what they want to do
- DM asks for any necessary dice rolls and describes the outcome
- Repeat
😊
