yall are so friendly i love it
thats where ideas come from, caffine induced hystaria
majority of my other servers are hostile
or autism, also YEAH WE DND WE FRIENDLY
how would people learn and grow if we mean
One idea I had was for a campaign where the party starts off dead in limbo and part of their journey is their characters coming to terms with their chosen 'vice' at the beginning.
i feel like i'm in the most warmest tavern with yellow filtered lamp lights and the atmosphere is so wonderful that you just forget time
maybe also cause the tavern has no windows but ehh
It’s an odd tavern to have a talking Nugget
interesting, maybe loose the spells that bring them back from the dead, or allow it if they need to leave for a whild
well how bout a chair sitting on a chair?
and when they come back have like faint memories of the time alive, maybe because somethings keeping them dead
mimic chair
Ohhhh when you lie down sleep and your pillows got teeth, that's a mimic.
yeah
hi guys, whats the best way to find a game of dnd to join from home?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

From home as in online or from home as in, in person
online
Icic well what kind of game are you looking for?
Oneshots where you just play a character for a session and swap for a different one in the future or continuous games like a campaign etc.
any really! im just looking to get into dnd. I guess a continuous game because I like building up gear and stuff
Icic, well you can look for continuous games in #looking-for-players and potentially westmarch campaigns in #looking-for-community
I tried but im not allowed to chat there!
You have to click on the thread
Each of the posts on there are threads and you have to chat inside of those
There should be some instructions on #find-a-game for how to use it which should answer any questions
ohhhhh ok thx!!!
hi guys , im not sure how character creation works i wanna make my character can someone help please?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Also make sure to download the DND Beyond App and it also walks you through the character creation process.
how good is 25 AC on level 8 sorcerer no armor?
Way too good
nice
How are you hitting 25 AC without armor
mage armor
Isn't that 13 + dex modifier, is your dex off the charts
18 dex
That's +4 to Dex, so AC of 17
i could use some help
oop
Yea where did 25 come from, magical items?
we get one custom uncommon tier item
i got war caster so i chose +1 shield
i need help to see if im breakin any rules with this
That puts it to 20
( i got lucky on the stat roll
You shouldn't have shield proficiency, you can't cast spells while wearing a shield
draconic resilience
war caster
"Draconic Resilience
The magic in your body manifests physical traits of your draconic gift. Your Hit Point maximum increases by 3, and it increases by 1 whenever you gain another Sorcerer level.
Parts of you are also covered by dragon-like scales. While you aren’t wearing armor, your base Armor Class equals 10 plus your Dexterity and Charisma modifiers."
That doesn't give shield proficiency
i got +5 cha
You can't stack this with Mage Armor
Also that
You only benefit from one AC calculation at a time, so either Mage Armor OR Draconic Resilience, not both
Also this, war caster does not give shield proficiency so by default you can't throw any spells at all
i dont see anything that would prevent me from useing spells?
Shield is armor. Using armor you're not proficient with stops you from casting spells
Armor Proficiency:
... If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or Attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can’t cast Spells.
Shield counts as armor in this context
Multiclassing
into?
Anything that gives shield proficiency, Paladin is a common one, or Hexblade Warlock
Alternatively get the Lightly Armored Feat + Moderately Armored feat
But that's like 8 levels so just multiclass into Paladin or something
Multiclassing starts to get a bit off the newcomer topic
i need the 8'th for war caster
i could sac my dex and cha for a feat tho, +1 to each isnt much
right this kinda turned into #character-discussion my bad
You need light armor proficiency to grab Moderately Armored
ima move over there now
Hello
Welcome to the server!
Welcome welcome!!!
if im a DM, do i just make stuff up and see what players do
That's part of the gig, yeah. But there are other aspects too, covered neatly in this section of the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics#WhatDoesaDMDo
It's usually recommended, for a new DM, to run a prewritten adventure, so that you get a good feel of what kinds of problems and challenges to present your players. That way, you're not literally making everything up on the spot.
is there a dnd server whit just voice chat and a campane where i can make a character easally
Maybe check out #looking-for-community?
i chekde i was really confusing cause verithyng was diffrent then i was used to
hi do's anyone know the fool's gold sands DND podcast
#dnd-media would be the place to discuss podcasts and liveplays
ok thank you
Could someone please explain D&D? I'm very new to it and not a native English speaker unfortunately!🙏

Most of the resources to learn dnd are in English but the free rules in the SRD also have been localized into French, German, Spanish and Italian, if that helps https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd
A shame I don't speak these languages I'll try to find a way to translate it! Overall thank you!
Yeah then English is probably your best bet. See the bot post above
heh. i should check out some of those translations to see if they've converted all the imperial measurements to metric.
1.52 m. things would have been so much cleaner for conversion if sqares were originally 1 yard each. or even 2 yards would have worked.
Hi guys I'm new to dnd and my friend played a "test game" with me and my second friend where he was gm and we played for a bit but I have a question about something
I meant that the game uses them as equivalents
Ask away.
So I rolled a natural 20 and got out of a "bad situation" but then my friend rolled a 6 and somehow also managed to get out of it? My DM friend said natural 20 is "best solution in that situation" so how did a 6 get out of a natural 20?
I basically deflected my problem to him with my natural 20
When you roll a check to see if you succeed something, you're comparing your roll to a secret number the DM has called a Difficult Class (DC).
No matter how good your roll is, as long as the number is higher than the DC, you succeed.
If the DC is 5, for example, both a roll of 20 and a roll of 6 have the same outcome.
the DC may have been 5. or the DM fudged it. or story wise, maybe your friend's PC saw what you did and that lowered the DC.
I'm not exactly sure cuz my friend didn't exactly explain that much 😅 I can tell the scenario that happened if y'all want
It really confused both of us
Ultimately it's your DM that decides what the success conditions are. We can't really explain why they did what they did
In one campaign table, a DC to make an acrobatic leap to across a pit might be a different number than at another campaign table.
is there a bot commands channel so I can submit a l4g post? I can't find it
You can post those commands in any channel that you can type in.
Ooooh I see ty
check #find-a-game
yes I did check there but I wanted to know which channel I can send the commands in
gotcha
ty for the help still!
see, the rules and pre-written adventure are more of a guideline than an exact set of directions and instructions. they aren't structured so rigidly like a video game. it makes games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights even more amazing considering they had to pre-account for all sorts of different possibilities.
That does make sense but my friend (the dm) idn't exactly have the adventure prewritten he just made it up along the way and when I deflected the "buying drinks for everyone" situation to my fighter friend we were confused how his 6 managed to get him out
We just assumed it's cause the DM gets the final say but I wanted to make sure to know for the future
yep. i've made adventures completely on the fly.
As bad of a dm as my friend is I got dragged into the game so I want to know more for the future 😅
Hard to say what their exact logic was. It could be as simple as "I don't really want to make this scene more complicated, so the situation resolves without issue."
Can i use my character that pre-made on other D&D community?
Only your DM can answer that for sure, but you usually start a new campaign with a fresh character. You don't get to keep your levels, items, etc, if you try to play the same character.
That character is fresh
yes and no. likely you'll need to make a copy to modify so it will fit with whatever game you will be playing in. the DM of that game will be able to help guide you. on the upside, that means your original character that you made stays as is and safe. you're just playing a variant. sometimes people get really really upset when their OC is hurt or dies or is changed.
Like i didnt upgrade him or made changes on other community
In that case can I just play the same character name appearance and backstory and start fresh on the items and stuff part?
You can likely play the same concept (personality, species, class), but they would be separate from the previous version.
More or less, yes, if your new DM thinks the character fits.
I think only stats should be changed to my character
Ty!
But still ty for answer.
your character's history or backstory might need to be changed. like if you are part of some thieves guild, and in the game that thieves guild doesn't exist, you'd need to change it to fit. also, you could potentially find yourself with skills and abilities that aren't suited to the adventure. like if your character is entirely ocean themed but the story takes place in a desert, you won't feel very useful.
oh ok
But generic terms can work. Any town worth the name has some kind of gang or other organised crime outfit going on. Even saying your character fell in with a bad crowd and did crime can be enough and then you finesse the setting specific details with your DM.
yeah. and sometimes you just need to change the name of something for it to work.
can someone please help me with my DnD character?
I made a character sheet but it looks extremely empty
Link it in #character-discussion!
let them know if its by hand or on dndbeyond
Did you follow the step by step guide to character creation in the free Basic Rules?
I did it through the website character build
is that one not good?
i just meant that if its by hand there's a different kind of help they can give. like you don't have menus to click on if its by hand.
oh this is just...information
it lets you know what you can put in where. much of the character sheet on dndbeyond should fill itself out as you go through the steps
you can go back and edit your character too.
my character on WEAPON ATTACKS & CANTRIPS
it just has...Unarmared Strike
oh. if you go to your inventory, there is a little square next to your weapons.
click the tiny box and it should turn red.
then go back and check. what that little red box means is that you are not just carrying the weapon, you have it equipped and ready to use
my defense is empty
If you made it on D&D Beyond, you can share the link (assuming you set the sheet to public) and folks can provide feedback all in one go instead of the back-and-forth!
i dont use dndbeyond, so let me take a look
Have you added a class to your sheet?
Barbarian doesn't get any choices as it levels to level 2, so it probably just populated the information for you in the Features tab.
If anyone could do me a favor and answer this Little question I have. So basically I'm in a campaign with some friends and DM or GM says that our character might die. I was curious if I or someone else does die, what happened to that character? Or they forever gone? Do I delete the character sheet?
did you select anything from the class page that had a blue exclamation point?
There are options in the game to bring characters back.
There are a ton of spells that can aid in restoring and reviving. Generally they come at a cost (diamonds or other components) but you can come back.
you can save it for some other one shot or campaign, you can burn it, you can draw a big skull on it and file it.
If your character dies, they are usually dead permanently, unless your team has some way to resurrect you. Methods of resurrection are usually costly and require high level spell casters.
If your character dies and there's no way to revive you, you'd make a new character with a new character sheet.
Ok thank you the 3 of you for answering it's much appreciated
Of course!
for example, i'm currently using a character that died in a different campaign. or rather, not the exact same character, just reusing the stats and everything.
That sounds pretty cool!
likely you wont be able to make the exact character, but you can base a new one on the old one. change the backstory, adjust things here and there
make the old character new into the new adventure.
like WAY back when, even in the same campaign players would die so often that sometimes they would take their character that just died, cross out the name, and write a new name to get back in. that's how we ended up with weird unoriginal character names in the D&D books like "Melf" who was a male elf, hence the name.

Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Ok thank you
Ok I think I can work with this, this will do
I already made a character in dnd beyond digitally
Hi I am new here I have made one character sheet before

hey, trying to make a character but the sections are confusing, like the combat. also in not sure what weapons i’m allowed to use and how high or low i can put my characteristics. is there a video or anything that can help with this?

When it comes to gaming sets, I feel there's a bit of a gap between, dice, a deck of cards and a whole box of dragonchess to carry around
My table wont care about item weight, but it seems silly that all gaming sets are weightless when the dragonchess set in particular can't be pocket sized, right?
Im reading through a starter I just bought. What are the rules for the xp in a fight? It shows nothing about it
Or you just don’t level up in these campaigns?
It’s the heroes of the borderlands btw
Are you using xp or milestone?
im not sure at all im new
im just reading through but i havent read anything about xp as of now
But if xp you have to look at the stat block and it should say how much xp the enemy gives
But also milestone is the level up system where the dm chooses when the party levels up
im currently reading that bandit card and it also shows nothing about xp
i would find info about that in the guide for the game as a whole or in the campaign book?
All you need to know is that milestone has your DM decide when you level up. XP has you level up when you beat said enemy. Each enemy produces a certain amount of XP.
Unless you're making your own custom enemies, which I don't recommend for a newbie, the answer is no.
so do i just chose as a dm when do they level up
also this guide shows nothing about level ups
For milestone, yes.
perhaps its meant to be played the same thje whole time
No. You either use one or the other.
If you use milestone you don't need to ever worry about XP.
am i supposed to look elsewhere for those rules since theyre not mentioned in the booklets in the starter campaign?
There should be a list of when to level up the party in the book when using milestone
its just that im reading and nowhere does it mention anything about leveling up at all
im going to re read if i have anymore questions ill be back, thanks bro!
okay so i made some progress theres 2 papers for each class front and back. They have the classes level 1 to 4 however i havent found what levels you up
If using XP, player characters level at the following amounts: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#LevelAdvancement
Each creature should have an associated XP amount, which is split equally among the party members.
If it's the new starter set, I'm fairly certain the different quest sections/book should mention leveling somewhere
I was running that over the holidays and I think I remember seeing it, though I just told my players to level when I wanted anyway
thx!
ill read it again because i cant find nothing about it 😢
Im reading the play guide reference booklet
it does show me getting rewards such as gold
Character advancement should be somewhere early in the adventure book(s).
youre the goat
thanks everyone too !
i do think they should atleast mention that somewhere in the guide lol
when it comes to stats i dont have to show that to the players right?
enemy stats that is
Nope.
who are you Nopeing?
They were not nopeing anyone, just agreeing that the DM does not (normally) show the monster statblock to the players
Hello! I'm new and have never played dnd before but always wanted to! Just unsure where to start... any advice? New friends are always welcome ♡
Start with #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Feel free to ask questions as you learn.
I'd suggest focusing on the first two chapters of the free basic rules as they cover the core game mechanics and flow of the game and the 2nd chapter covers how to build a character step by step.
Omg thank you so much
Hey! I am completely new to RPG, but always wanted to play DnD. Advice and help are always welcome!

Hello my fellow travelers
NGL its so weird reading everyone talk abt some complicated thinga,i was taught to be a 'support' cleric and i rll do almost no math or shi like i was in 3 games that ended at out of nowhere and i mean ik how to play and stuff but bonuses etc eat my mind clean, lowkey should just stick to my healing and shielding spells and sit quietly during fights LOL
Hallo(ˊᗜˋ)
How are thou
Thou🥹?(you mean you or im stupid)
yes a exquisite term for you
thankyou my good sir
Hello new people
Im very good just sleepy cuz its 5 in the morning and im readingwhat else to put in my character chart! What about you how are you feeling what are ya doing
Hello everynyan.. You just reminded me of that
I am marvelous just creating a bard sheet right now
OMG I LOVE BARDS๑•͈ᴗ•͈๑(cant play one tho)
If i was a bard i think id play smth weird like uhhhh watercups.
ah yes the good ol watercups
I loved to play them when i was a child lol
Hai
Play the Thelarr/Songhorn c:
it's a recorder
My english not englishing
lets hit the taverns and play music for people ill distract while you pickpocket
Haloo
A recorder is a very basic flute that small children are taught to play in elementary school in America to help them learn manual dexterity
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recorder_(musical_instrument)
I remember when one time in my game my dm made me roll when i tried robbing someone and i rolled 1 and got put in jail LOL
Damn
They're fairly shrill and incredibly annoying if you don't play them right
I think in my country they also learn us it, i always sucked at playing them
Fairly common practice, some dude like 60+ years ago pushed for it to be made a standard part of schooling because it really does help with learning to use your hands for fiddly things like that
I can see how it can help, but most of us never knew how to play it lolll
Don't actually need to be good at it really, just messing around with it and being made to do the basics is enough based on the studies on it IIRC
here's the part of the article on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recorder_(musical_instrument)#Use_in_schools
aww, it doesn't go in depth though
No matter how much id try id always suck st playing them..
My asthma wont let me😭🥹
My brother used to have real bad asthma
it's not fun
Srs!! I like to add it to my character sheet tho so they cant make me run`⎚⩊⎚´ -✧
That's when you get a mount and have the mount run
Wait wdym a mount (my english not englishing)
Like a horse to ride
OHHHH
Na i just made someone in our party carry my character's bum like a pricess
He was getting princess treatment frfr
My druid/lock has her familiar to act as her trusty steed c:
she's small so she can ride the deer or goat familiar without too much trouble
Imagine riding a goat, damn thats actually flex
It has a climb speed, so it's actually a really nice option in certain enviornments
Wait srs damn
Vulture is also technically a ridable option but its 7 strength score makes that not really workable
the special saddle you need for flying mounts is like 40 lbs, so you're left with 65lbs capacity for your character and all their gear
Dang
Me nodding along like i understand knowing i dont understand a single thing bc all i know abt the game is how my dm made me roll for everything and how i only played till lvl 4 bc people got bored
also a flying mount is a much bigger target and is way more of a cheese than a standard mount
it do be like that without investment into the game
IM TRYING TO LEARN ETC BUT NO ONE WANTS TO LEARN ME AND LEARNING ON MY OWN IS SO HARD BRUVVV
Especially with a dm i had he gave me more spell slots or less spell slots and made me roll for everything so srs all i did was rp and heal/shield my allies during fights..
best we can really do here is point people to the rules, have them build a character to check to make sure they followed them properly, and then point them at the looking for Players/DM channels to find a group
there's just too many people joining on a daily basis to walk everyone through things one on one
Yes ikk dwee
Anything specifically we can help you with?
100% feel free to ask questions on anything you don't get though
Tbh, idk im having a hard time counting all my bonuses etc, like how the hell do i know how much to add from my efficiency etc wait i forgot the name in english im gonna check in my notes
Proficiency?
YES
Yup, common question
I mess playing D&d
`⎚⩊⎚´ -✧
Miss
Maybe try to find someone looking for players?
Maybe ask someone to help you? If they got time ofc
so your Proficiency bonus gets added to anything you are proficient in
- Rolls for skills you are proficcient/skilled in
- The attack rolls for weapons you're trained to use
- The attack rolls and DC for your Spells
- Saving Throws for the ones your class give you proficiency for
- Certain class features and feats may give you a certain number of uses of the feature based on your PB as well
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Proficiency
Thats smart
I will read that again when its not 5 in the morning
class is rogue, species is elf x
We have the same class and species nice. If you like using spells. Get a Arcane Trickster as your subclass but if you only have a thief as your subclass. That's ok. You can get Sage as your background to get extra cantrips and 1st level spells because of Magic Initiate
oh great! thanks
Try Roll20 and DnD Beyond
No problem. That's for 2024 btw it might be different from 2014
should i like start with making a character or should i focus on learning other stuff beforehand? i’ve watched like a video that covered most bases but im not sure what thing to do is the best to start
You can do both. You should start making char. Go experiment with each class, subclass, species and background. You might find your perfect char for you
If anyone has time I'm new to d&d and would like to get some help filling out the rest of my character sheet I have no idea really what I need to fill out if anyone has time to help.
Have you picked a class, species and background?
You've picked your starting equipment and spells, right?
i have a dagger and a long sword
Ok, what are your character's Strength and Dexterity scores?
Actually, one thing before that - are you using D&D Beyond or filling a sheet in by hand?
by hand
Alright, let's have those scores.
kk my dex is 16 +3 and strenth is 13+1
What class are you playing?
Longsword doesn’t use Dex, so that might be a tad weird to play around.
bard collage of swords also doing homebrew
can you choose whatever weapons u want like regardless of class
my dm said ill be starting at a lvl 3
Ok, so:
A bard is proficient with simple weapons. A dagger counts, so your attack bonus is +5: 3 from Dexterity (because it has the finesse property) and 2 from your proficiency bonus.
A longsword is a martial weapon. Using that you'd only get +1 from your Strength.
would it help to share my file
Probably you won't be able to effectively use them if you don't have mastery of that specific weapon
More particularly, proficiency. No proficiency, no proficiency bonus to hit. Mastery is a cherry on top.
You're right about that
so does each class have a mastery of a weapon or species?
@wild onyx would it be ok if i direct message you my pdf character
Each class have different weapons they are proficient in using. Nothing on species, unless maybe you’re playing 2014 then kinda?
Just to restate
(#dnd-newcomers message):
You'll get to add five to the dice roll when attacking with your dagger, and one when attacking with your longsword.
Yah. 2014, I think elves get some of that, longsword and longbow.
You've already given me all I need to know for now. Is it a little clearer what your bonuses are?
@zenith idol
If it's any help, I'd suggest switching the longsword for a scimitar. You get proficiency with one from the College of Swords and it'd mean you could use either weapon with your Dexterity for better bonuses to hit and damage. Could even use them both at once!
sorry had to do some ok so if so what do i need to change any numbers
curently my longsword is +5 1d8+3
this is all very new to me i had someone help me majority of the way as you can tell i have no idea what im doing sorry for the stress
If this was that stressful they wouldn’t be going to the channel that teaches newcomers
Though, I am curious how you’re getting +5. What ruleset, level and species are you if you know?
im lvl 3 species is the Dragonborn-Gem-Topaz bard background Golgari Agent
and i did a longsword because i chose the collage of swords for bard
So, attack bonus.
The default for a melee attack is to add your Strength bonus.
If the weapon has the finesse property, you can use Dexterity instead.
If you have proficiency in a weapon or type (simple or martial) you can add your proficiency bonus when that applies. At third level, that's +2.
What weapon proficiencies does your character have?
im unclear as to what that is
You see here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Bard
In the first table, it lists various bits including a line for Weapon Proficiencies.
Hello everyone, you can call me Kees. I am very new to dnd and I would love to play the game! I read a lot of pages on dnd beyond and watched a lot of videos but I don't know how to and what kind of character to create. I also have some issues with stats and the proficiency bonus. Can someone help me with my character and what class and race fits me?
Just a simple weapon. What do you think that means? Basic weapons? A starter weapons?
Sure, I got time
Also for stats
(I think your reply missed)

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
What do you like to pick as your class and species?
As for proficiency bonus, it’s a number you add to checks you’re proficient in. The number depends on your level
So, Kees, what playstyle or tropes do you like/are looking for?
it would really help if i could talk im more of a verbal and visual learner. no offense thank you all for the help so far but i might have to wait for my dm to help im really confused.
I have no idea tbh! I want to start with something more simple
More simple? Let’s rule out casters mostly then
Go play as Goliath Paladin
Oh okay, that sounds pretty interesting
You wanna use weapons? Or fists/unarmed strikes?
I think I want to use long range weapons or a sword
I do like animals, so i was thinking about something with magic and animals combined or smt
OPE
Ranger!
A staff also seems cool
Druid Ranger
He can play as Druid Ranger m
Rangers are simpler than Druids imo, but yeah either fit very well
That sounds pretty cool! What's the diffrence between them?
Druids are full casters that focus on becoming one with nature and bending it to their will, while rangers are martial half casters that gain their magic from adapting to nature.
Druids also can turn to animals
While rangers are less magical but have subclasses that give them pets that assist you in combat
They both sound very interesting! This is going to be a pretty hard choice
He can play a Ranger then pick a subclass or background that's related to him liking animals
Do you want to be more magic or weapon focused?
I don't really mind, I like both.
Well, Druids can’t really use weapons all too well, but Druids use both magic and weapons
Just do multiclass. It will be fun
I don’t recommend multiclassing for a newbie
Druids can beat people up with sticks
True
Think I'd lean towards Ranger.
Same
Lol that sounds funny
Well, rangers can also beat people up with sticks
He likes range weapons. He leans more toward Ranger and you said he can get a pet in Ranger class so
Yupadoodle
Are you playing online the 2024 or 2014 ruleset
2024
Wood elf is a classic pick.
Elf loves animals so
Any class fits any species in this except for goblins and rogues/monks, but yeah elves are the classic
(Let's try to keep it to Basic Rules)
Agreed
Thank you all! What kind of stats should a ranger elf have?
?tag new ranger
Ranger
Weave together martial prowess, nature magic, and survival skills
Far from bustling cities, amid the trees of trackless forests and across wide plains, Rangers keep their unending watch in the wilderness. Rangers learn to track their quarry as a predator does, moving stealthily through the wilds and hiding themselves in brush and rubble.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 12
Dex. 15
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 14
Cha. 10
Likes: Survival
Complexity: Average
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
High Dex and wisdom, decent con
Thank you!
Personally I suggest 8 str, 15 dex, 14 con, 12 int, 13 wis, 10 cha
Swapping con and Wis is also fine
Dex and Wis 14 or better, Con no less than 10, anything else for anything else.
If we're doing personal takes.
I’d say con no less than 12 personally, I generally dislike dying (dying is suboptimal folks!)
Even 12 con feels bad personally, go big with 14 con
I am very confused at what to do now lol
And despite appearances I think you can survive with 12-13 wis
Thank you!
is drow + devil sight (warlock) redundant?
This set of numbers (#dnd-newcomers message) will do fine for starters. You'll get some changed anyway when you add a background.
Just pick the background that gives you wisdom to compensate for the loss of pts in stats
but isn't the race redundant?
No cuz darkvision is kind of just a perk, you don't run a class around one single trait necessarily
There's plenty of redeeming features on the Drow otherwise
2024 comes with spells as you level, one of which is (drumroll!) darkness. So that's nice if you can magically see through it.
Hi! I’m a new player, it’s nice to meet you all
Hi a new player, I’m Nugget!
Hi a new player. I’m your dad.
Hi father!
Hi nugget, nice to meet you
Welcome to da server!
Thanks! You give the vibe of an extremly experienced player
Only 2 years, so not extremely
And didn’t play too much between those two, they were relatively spread out
That makes sense. Is getting started difficult?
Call me Daddy 👉👈
Nope, strictly father
Ide say im pretty solid
Nothing extraordinary
Then you should be fine. Hardest part would be finding a group
You got any friends that play or are interested?
Had some in college but never got invited to a game and since I moved home I effectively have no one that cares much for dnd
Got a local game store nearby?
Haven’t got a clue. Being honest I haven’t looked yet, this is kind of my first reach out to any dnd community
I’d recommend checking, cuz else you may only be able to play online unless you can find a physical table
I was kind of expecting to play online, but as nerve wracking at it is, should totally get some In person experience
Anywho, have you started in the rules?
In understanding the rules?
Yes
I understand some basic help with the help of balders gate but that does a lot of the work for you, so any deeper rules would probably have to be explained to me in some way.
Baldurs gate is a lil different
I imagined so, didnt think it was something I could just rely on for my own knowledge

@strange leaf Basic info is above.
The basic rules should be available and free to read, have you got someone in your group thats wanting to be the dm?
alrightt
i think ill probably be the dm cause ill teach them how to play none of us know how to play it
There’s plenty of resources on YouTube about how to DM.
Ezpz, well you'll definitely need to read the basic rules in that case or alternatively you can try playing in some one shots to understand how the game works
Hmmm i see
Also which DND should i buy if you have any recommendations
The basic rules are enough to start off with which should be free, but if youre set on buying something its dependant on what you're looking for
I watched stranger things so over there they had like figurines and maps some stuff
Like can i get those as a beginner?
Yup ofc, it just depends on how much youre wanting to invest in it, you can play digitally or with physical maps/tokens
Having a grid is useful for combat, but it’s not necessary.
The cheapest way for entry play is just using a piece of paper with a hand drawn map
You don't need anything high quality to serve as physical markers. Even chess pieces can be used
Is 80 dollars good enough to buy one?
I see
Depends on where youre buying it or if youre making it yourself etc
But should be, I havent really used too much physical pieces and run mostly online
Ahhhh that makes sense
My dry erase mat was about £40.
I have printer so ig i can do that too?
That also works.
Alright thanks man
If you have a 3D printer already then try looking at a site like Hero Forge where you can create custom minis and then buy the STL for around $8. You’ll need to paint them (which is a whole hobby by itself) but you and any other players can all have unique minis for not a lot. Hero Forge also does a subscription where each month they send you STL files for pre-designed minis, like a set of skeletons or five goblins, so you can build up a collection
Hello everyone im very new with dnd been doing alot of research and reading and I bought the dungeon and dragons starter set heros of the borderlands and had a couple of questions

What's on your mind?
@wild onyx the characters you choose in the starter set goes up to level 3 can you take the charter u leveled up and continue that character in other adventures?
Sure can!
Sweet how do I do that by filling out the dnd sheet ?

How do you do what exactly? Sorry, I'm not entirely clear on your question.
@harsh fjord so my question was I had recently purchased heros of the borderlands starter set and the characters me and wife chose goes to level 3 and was wondering if we can take the characters we choose and somehow level them up after 3 and bring them into other adventures
It's actually pretty unlikely that you'll be able to take a character from one campaign and continue their adventure in a different campaign run by a different DM.
What DOSH said. Unless you or your wife are running an adventure at higher levels. Basically, it's extremely rare (outside of Adventurers League) to just port characters from one game into another, unless the DM okays it.
Ahhh ok so these are just to show us how it works so when we do make a character we know what to
More or less! Knowing the process is more helpful (IMO) than having a character you bring everywhere because different tables have different parameters.
Oh wow so each adventure requires a different character? How many characters do most people create?
And that's not to say that the starter set is just a practice run or anything. It's a whole little adventure!
However, it's an adventure that's kind of meant to end when you're done with it.
Some people create characters for fun so they wind up with dozens. Some folks only do it as needed. And some just play different iterations of the same character (sort of an alternate universe version with none of the previous version's experience, items, etc.).
Wow ive learned more here than anywhere else lol
Longer form campaigns are where a character starts at a low level and go to much, much higher levels. Those tend to be a little more involved, and are where some of the more high impact character development opportunities come into play.
If your DM is interested in running a long campaign, they can segue a much smaller adventure like the starter set into a broader campaign, but that's something they'll have to decide themselves.
Guys do you know what should I put in the Features & Traits catagory in the Dnd character sheet?
Where can I find that information in my Player handbook?
That's for any abilities that your class, origin feat, or class grants you.
Or species.
... what is the different between that and the spell?
Oh, I wrote class twice... nice catch!
Spells go elsewhere on the character sheet.
Like my character is a dragonborn, he have breath weapon. So where should I put it?
I'd put it in the Features and Traits section!

Circle of the Land
The Circle of the Land is made up of mystics and sages who safeguard ancient knowledge and rites through a vast oral tradition. These druids meet within sacred circles of trees or standing stones to whisper primal secrets in Druidic. The circle’s wisest members preside as the chief priests of communities that hold to the Old Faith and serve as advisors to the rulers of those folk.
As a member of this circle, your magic is influenced by the land where you were initiated into the circle’s mysterious rites.
Does every Druid belong to this Circle? Is that what I understand?
Nope, there are multiple druid circles.
Yes, there are Circle of the Moon too, but do I have to belong to one?
Mechanically you do, but whether you do narratively is something to work out with your DM.
That's what we call a "subclass". They're specializations for each class that makes them a little better at doing specific things.
By default, there's one free subclass for each class. If you end up purchasing any books, you'll unlock more subclasses depending on the book.
So I can choose which Circle I belong to at lv2?
Yep.
Assuming you're using the outdated rules for your game, yes
Oh, right. I'm always in 2014. It's level 3 in 2024 rules.
You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
So when it say I have resistance, that mean I am totally immune to it, or I will have advantage at saving throw against it?
Resistance to a damage type means that if you take damage, you reduce that damage by half.
So if you're resistant to fire damage, for example, if you get hit with a Fireball and would normally take 31 points of fire damage, you take 15 points of fire damage instead.
can someone tell me where i can find the meanings of different stuff like dexterity?
Sure! Right here in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
thanks
Notably, that's the second part in the "Playing The Game" section. I'd recommend looking through that whole section as you're reading the rules.
Bro I'm so annoyed I bought the monster manual of amazon for £45 and there are dupes of pages, monsters missing, pages being printed wrongly as well
oh thats wild, amazon has got good customer service so i would get it replaced
Heyy, me and my friends made a custom system in school where the amount of levels you have in one stat adds to your roll, like each 6 points is plus one to the roll, but now Im not sure how to implement the difference between weapons in combat
Any ideas??
so like
Stats? the core stats of dnd ?
because each stat has a modifier that adds to your relavant rolls, 14 Strenght is a plus 2 bonus, 16 is plus 3, ECT
Idk because we made a custom system with custom stats and races
I just dk how to implement weapons
making a game from scrach is quite an undertaking, good luck
I still need help😭
I think easiest way to do this is to give the weapon a damage range and the roll changes how much you attack
We cannot help you, as this is not DnD anymore.
Your best bet is to look for an RPG design community!
Mb Im sorry
Does anyone know where I can find these triple 4 dice (dodecahedron) with the golden Triforce symbol on them!
The main website I found they’re out of stock
I don't - internet search is probably your best bet. You can also check with folks in #merch-and-dice but again, if the actual producer is out of stock, likely there's not a lot available out there for purchase regardless.
Thanks! That channels wasn’t on my list !
As a new (just came in and don't really know rules yet) DM
Do I need to help new players unlock class skills?
Normally they do that by levelling up, doing adventures and such.
They unlock it when they level up so, you’re the one that effectively gives it to them
quick question, is Ember a community or an engine for D&D?
someone sent me a video explaining it but I'm not sure if it's a fan made community or if it's an actual engine players and DMs can use
If it's the thing from Foundry, it's a tabletop game itself.
so it's an engine right? or VTT if that's how we call it here, sorry for my wording
I'm used to programming so I usually call these types of stuffs engines like Unity Unreal etc-
My understanding—and so I could be wrong—is that you can play it using D&D's rules (so more of a setting and adventure) or as a game in its own right with its own rules/mechanics.
The Foundry VTT Discord can probably give you might intel.
okay quick question does it allow Homebrew characters and enemies?
like custom characters and custom enemies?
or do they have limited options to make a character?
You'd have to do more investigating elsewhere. Check their Discord!
fair enough... I'll check
How difficult is it to manage two different campaigns as a player?
That'll probably vary too much to say definitively. I haven't had any trouble myself, but that doesn't mean everyone would have the same experience.
As a new player, playing a somewhat complex character, it'd probably be pretty difficult right?
I imagine it'd be tough if you're still learning the game itself AND two different characters. Even if it's only one character.
Yeah keeping track of everything might be tricky...
Hey

Hello new player made a sorcerer tie fling and looking to join and play a game
Made a official character cause didn't know what to do forst
Check out #find-a-game , see what can be seen
So do I need to wait for a new campaign to start or am I able to jump right into an ongoing on?
See above
So when it comes to learning rules and such, and creating characters, would it be best to start with 2014 or 2024? I see both are still used, so I guess my question is what is more commonly used so I start with my best bet?
Following up with that, when creating characters classes and races stay pretty standard. But I see a lot of different sub classes and backgrounds, which differ between versions as well. And when building a character in DnD beyond not everything is included in standard. And some things you need the player book to unlock unless you add it as custom. And then there's stuff like Tasha's cauldron 😅 sooo my question is, do most tables accept anything as long as it's in one of these books? Or are there certain things I should stick with unless I join a group that specifically says I can use x, y, z
most tables in my experience run 2014 still as 2024 is still recent and changes some core stuff that takes adapting to. It's up to your dm really, he will tell you what ruleset they are running, generally people pick up some rules from each version as they see fit or rule of cool applies. Tasha and Xanathar for example are add-ons, not every table accepts them, but in my experience if you have one or two things from there you really think you will find fun to have, you can always try convincing your dm, it's a dialogue really.
Thank you!! I wanted to read through a player's handbook but couldn't figure out if I should start with 2014 or 2024
I highly suggest 2024 as the resources for 14 wil get harder and harder to come by, digitally or physical copies
Hello guys, I just joined around a month a go but this is the first time I actually send a message
Glad to have ya talking here
I don't really know much about DnD but in the past 6 months I've been getting quite a few request from people to draw a character design for their DnD campaign, I didn't really bother to look it up at the time but now I'm more and more intrigue
The sessions I play in regularly basically says that we can create a character with anything as long as it's an official D&D sourcebook
So I play a Druid character with a half-elf species which is from the 2014 character options
You might want to confirm if they have a ruleset preference
Some people forget to specify if they assume one as the default
But if they at least allow non-reprinted 2014 options, that should be possible
Up to you, but this server is pretty pro 2024 so take what you will of it
Thank you everyone for the input! I have a physical copy of 2024 and decided to get a digital copy of 2014 so I can have both depending on the table and DMs preferences
For party composition or multiclassing?
A Fighter + Cleric
Yeah a martial class for variety, but you’d pretty much be fine with any class you’d be interested in, especially at a newbie table
The standard team comp is warrior priest mage expert
Bard falls under expert and Wizard under mage, so all you need now is a warrior and a priest
is anyone willing to like go over my character sheet and just check if there’s anything obviously wrong or i have to add? im not sure if i’ve done it correctly lol
Feel free to share it here or in #character-discussion !
my image add button is grey and i can’t press it, do i have to be like a higher level to send images
You can upload the sheet to a trusted file sharing site like Google Drive and send the share link that generates.
I believe you had said you made yours on PDF or equivalent earlier?
What do I put in CP, SP, EP, GP, PP at the left side of the equipment table in the character sheet?
Those are for recording your wealth. If you have have any money after character creation, note it there.
Do you know what each of those mean?
😮
interesting
You can see their values in relation to each other here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#CoinValues
I play Bg3 and thought the only currency is GP
BG3 is based on 5e, but it makes quite a few changes! It's a video game after all, so it has different priorities than a tabletop game.
Then again, I have played in groups that only use gp as well, because it's easier to deal with.
Hey guys! I’m getting back into D&D. I played when I was younger, but it’s been years so I’m basically still really new. I don’t have access to a party anymore, so I was wondering if anyone knows of any live campaigns for beginners or any online games I could join?
Hey there. If someone offers campaigns, they'll post in #looking-for-players
Ah alright good to know thank you!
We call it Larianbrew personally, bg3 is like a dnd campaign with a lot of homebrewing (like mods in a video game)
So a lot of stuff is streamlined and automated, when actual dnd campaigns are more grueling
so im 'new' to dnd and have played 1 or 2 campaigns but i wanted to give DMing a shot. mainly because finding a dm can be a bit challenging for alot of dnd groups at least in my experience. Do you have any tips or something i should know before i dm? ive watched a few videos and im starting to understand it without trying to 'know everything'.

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
It can be a great way to get into DM’ing without having to craft an entire world. The ones above should be free
ive already crafted a world and i had planned to dm for my friends and hopfully other groups in the future.
i actually had a blast making the towns and adding lore to it. but i might have to try a module out for sure
might help me understand what i should or shouldnt pre write
obviosly dont want 90 pages of lore on a building they may never enter lmao
i tried to keep it short and sweet so i can improvise for most of it
Hey all, I made my first DND charecter, not participating in a campaign, just felt it was fianlly time. I think I did it right. If anyone would be able to give me advice I have it saved in a PDF format.. which I cant send on the server. Help would very much be apreciated!!

I think not trying to know everything is a good impulse! Otherwise, communicate often (session zero is a good method for getting everyone on the same page), ask for feedback from your table, and try to remember it's a game where the point is to have fun. That should be plenty for starters!

Digital items can be claimed anywhere but for the physical + digital bundles, you would need to use the wizards of the coast D&D store.
You should be fine using D&DBeyond to claim free/claimable things.
Let me check
is that working?
ok ignore the last two pages i havent filled them out
just the first page
Ah, was going to say your spell list is missing. Stats look good, your attack bonus with spells is your Intelligence mod plus proficiency (+5 in your case).
okk thank u! now i need to figure out how to do my spell list...
do i only need to fill out section 1 and cantrips on the spell list?
or all of it
A wizard starts with three cantrips, and six level one spells in their book.
can sorcerer cast summoning spells or no?
Sorcerer has a few summoning spells available to them at higher levels.
ah okay, cause for my oc it requires summoning, but what class do i need so my oc can buff themselves with mechanical armor? im still trying to figure out how everything works lol
Mechanical armor like magitech/steampunk armor? The Artificer class has a subclass that has access to that kind of thing. No other class does, unfortunately.
ohhh okay okay ty
But as a recommendation: it might be better to actually go about building your character backwards from the way you're doing it. DnD isn't a very good system for turning OCs into playable characters.
Instead, I'd recommend taking a look at what the classes can do already, then design a character from those options.
Do we have a botspam channel for bot commands?
What’s meta casting?
-# We definitely used to, but I can't find it for the life of me now...
Never heard of it!
Also never heard of it. Possibly you might be referring to Metamagic, which is a Sorcerer feature?
Yeah mb sorry
Its basically manipulating your spells
To suit any of my needs right?
Not really
There are certain metamagic types
Like increasing dameage or number of people targeted
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level2Metamagic
You can read all about it in the Sorcerer section of the basic rules above!
Can I use Dino public command there?
It's specifically for Avrae commands.
Thanks!
If you're asking about the LFG commands, you can activate those in any channel. They get auto deleted afterwards.
Oh thank you so much

Hello folks, me and a group of friends are going to be playing our very first DnD game soon (all first time players and DM). Because of this we chose to go very basic, no multiclassing and the 'basic' species.
I've chosen to play a dual wield Ranger. Yes, i know and read about how its not a great class, but my character backstory fits it. I'm only not sure what sublass to eventually go. I'm considering either Gloom Stalker or Fey warden. I'd love some of your guys feedback (((i might be open to going Hunter))).
#character-discussion would be better! This channel is really for game fundamentals. Unless you have questions along those lines?
Oh thanks, didnt see that one!
Hey yall
Hii
Welcome to the server!
Thanks for the welcome ^^
Feel free to ask any questions you have.
Hi guys, im very very new to dnd, i never played it but i wanna get to it SO MUCH! Can anyone tell me a way to start, and don't get discouraged? I know whole game is very complex, but is there a way, to start simple, without most of those complex things?
A read through the first two sections of the free Basic Rules would be a good start! They cover all the essentials and lay the foundation for how the game is played.
They’re linked in #learn-to-play and in this channel’s pins. This channel is also has a lot of helpful people that can answer any questions you might have along the way
I dont wanna sound stupid, but chatGPT told me i dont even have to buy anything... Is this true? Well... Im just not really sure if im gonna get so much into it, and i want to try basics of D&D, so is this true? That i can start for absolutely free?
Thank you, ill definitely check this out
I wouldn’t really try chatGPT for reliable answers but yes D&D can be played completely for free, and I suspect most of the player base hasn’t spent a dime or at least very little.
Okay, thank you very much :))
I recommend making a practice character as you go along, it’s great rules practice. The Basic Rules happen to be hosted on D&DBeyond, D&D’s official toolset/marketplace. Conveniently, it also has its own character creator with the Basic Rules integrated by default
So, is D&D beyond, like a free way to play D&D, online?
It’s one of the tools you can use to play D&D. Usually an online group will use a variety of tools to facilitate play. Typically:
- A communications platform
- A character sheet hoster
- A die roller
- A virtual table top (VTT)
For a player all these are almost always free
They aren’t always separate tools. For example D&DBeyond has its own character creator and die roller integrated already. It also has the VTT Maps, though your eventual table may use a different one
Okay, ill definitely start this way, thank you :))
But, tbh, im more interested in real life playing with my friends, is this also possible for free?
Yeah that’s possible too. Unless you want to go fully physical media you’ll just use actual battlemaps (printed, drawn, etc) instead of using digital ones imported to a VTT
Everything else can be put onto a computer or phones and set around the table
Okay, understood
Soo, for example i can print/draw map, use digital dice and digital everything else, like stats, right?
My parents got me a full in starter kit and my step brother and his girlfriend got me some creatures
Yup!
Maybe some day, i will get myself some started kit
There like 50 bucks at most
I do recommend buying 1-2 dice sets if you’re planning on playing IRL though. It’s not a requirement but it is fun to roll math rocks
That's acceptable for me
The important thing (in my eyes) is that you can spend money to play D&D, but it's not strictly necessary!
Okay okay, noted
don't listen to most of the people on here, any class can be fun. You don't have to be the most optimized character at all times to enjoy this game.
Anybody know if the 2024 ruleset has any ice spells for a cleric at lvl 1? Because a friend I have that wants to play DND would like to make an ice based healer cleric but I'm not sure when they would get access to ice-themed spells
I'm not sure clerics get any ice based spells at all
Not even with tempest path? (I think that's what it's called?)
They'd probably be better off with a druid for that
Ah okay ty
Tempest is mostly extra thunder or lightning spells iirc
Yea I’m looking at my players hand book right now but I’m not seeing any ice spells
For cleric
you might also be able to #homebrew that or take some Magic Initiate feats at some point for that, but yeah Druid seems like a better bet. They can also heal if that's the concern
Tempest is also a 2014 subclass if that makes a difference for you
Alright Ty guys for the help
No. Read the actual game rules and pick them yourself or even ask folks in #character-discussion - you'll get better and more accurate results
(Also check server rules - we don't allow AI-generated content on our server)
Web can be decent for area control
also AI cannot differentiate between older editions, 5e 2014, 5e 2024, homebrew, other similar systems, and random people on the internet posting basically whatever they want on the topic that the bot happened to scrape up, and as such AI should not be relied on for rules questions or decisions
Ask your questions in the appropriate channel here to get more accurate information and to avoid being lied to while burning clean water and electricity on halucinations c:
Web is a CC support spell, so it varies depending on ur build. if ur build is a utility or support build in a party that have strong damage dealer, web is a very good spell. but if ur party is low on damage a more damage focused spell would be better
If they just want the vibes they can always describe their abilities and spells as having ice involved. As long as you don’t change the mechanics of how the spell actually works I can imagine most DMs won’t really care how it affects the narrative.
CC is good if you have a high DPR team
lets you focus on one thing at a time or stick enemies in groups to hit with AoE c:
do check out all the options though, Hypnotic Pattern is a very good option if ur party has strong debuffer or divination wizard. and make sure u have all the other more important spells: counterspell, dispel magic, fly, (maybe) enemy abound, and bestow curse. there's many other but these are the ones i like
how do i go about finding a group to play with during certain times. im a player so do i make a post or something?
Check the information and instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to use the Looking For Game channels here on the server.
You can also check Rioll20 and Demiplane which have game finding services.
ive never heard of those
Well now you have and internet search can show them to you 😉
k thx
Also check your local game stores and book shops - some of them may have in person D&D groups
Also local libraries as well.
That's a good idea
I'll pass it along
Hii new here. I have a question. Is there a way from stopping the other players from making a Paladin break their by doing stupid things?
Talk to them about their behavior as people at the table, not as characters.
could u explain more on what u'd like to do?
table issues need to be solved at the table by talking with your players; not via in game restrictions or whatever
if you're a player, bring it up with the DM, it's their job to arbitrate things like this
So, the party walks into a pub and a party member starts a fight with someone and kills them and somehow I end up breaking my oath
Obviously we don't know the full context, but not every table is good for every player.
I guess it would depend on the DM?
not generally how that works; it requires the paladin themself do something against their oath with bad intentions
info is detailed in here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level3PaladinSubclass
Breaking Your Oath
A Paladin tries to hold to the highest standards of conduct, but even the most dedicated are fallible. Sometimes a Paladin transgresses their oath.
A Paladin who has broken a vow typically seeks absolution, spending an all-night vigil as a sign of penitence or undertaking a fast. After a rite of forgiveness, the Paladin starts fresh.
If your Paladin unrepentantly violates their oath, talk to your DM. Your Paladin should probably take a more appropriate subclass or even abandon the class and adopt another one.
Yep. Things that aren't spelled out by the rules (and even the rules themselves) are subject to the DM's interpretation.
yes, and it must be intentionally done to break ur oath, unless ur trying to make it otherwise
@patent cipher That is what I thought. That my character would have to do something out of character to break the oath
If you don't think you did anything to break your oath, talk to your DM. If they're acting adversarially instead of collaboratively, that's probably telling.
Hai
Thank you
Hello everyone. Just wanted to stop in. Im new to DnD. So just trying to learn and make some friends 👍😁
Welcome!
@crimson dune hiii
How are all of you?
I'm doing awesome watching critical role before bed
Nice! I watch a lot of dimension 20. But Im trying to watch critical role now.
um just so u know there's #non-dnd-topics for this, anywhere else u might get banned/timed out. so... yeah
Oh okay! I apologize
Sorry

ooh okay thanksss
PBP campaigns don't seem that common are they
Less common than actual voice or virtual tabletop games but I've seen PBP campaigns posted in our LFG channels regularly.
theyre less common but i still wouldnt call them extremely rare
Im trying to get into those first before i try stuff with voice call. Its a little stressful for me
I've found the DDBeyond forums to be quite active in pbp:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/play-by-post
Thanks
Other places you might check out that specialize in PBP: Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Role Gate and Gamers Plane both have Discord servers, and maybe some of these others do too!
Gotcha!
Hi, I'm looking for someone to teach how to play D&D. That's it. Dm me if you're willing to.

I downloaded dnd beyond last night, but now not sure what to do lol
hi just wondering do i need to make multiple characters or can i just make 1 character and stick to that 1 character for all my games
typically, you make one character per game, but you often can reuse the basic concept if you are attached to that char. just dont expect old adventures or magic items to carry over
talk to your DM about this
check out the links from the bot post above your comment
Uhh, like currently? I am playing in a bunch of games.
my most recent one is is a human Light cleric. Ex-Convict who found Lathander in Prision and now wants make the world a better place mostly.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Thank you
lol that wasn't stressful at all....
I think I have a character now
I saved her in beyond and also saved in order to print out later if needed.
Alright! You could share the sheet in #character-discussion if you want opinions, or plough straight into looking for a game if you prefer. Here's how:
-
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
-
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
-
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Hi guys and girls, i am very new to D&D, with a group of my friend we wanna dive into it (we are all new players).
One of my acquaintance told me, read the Player guide book and the DM guide book (im planning to be the DM)! The first seassion it is what it is bc its gonna be slow, we gonna check the rules many times, search for a specific rule etc etc...
Then make a homebrew campaign or search online for one. I told her some ppl recommend the Started Set to buy if we are beginners. She said its looks good and have cool stuff inside the set, and if i think its good buy it... but im not sure about it 😅
Idk where to start im watching guide videos, reading stuff online and more... but idk where to start.. can somebody "help me" somehow or where to go?
(sorry if my english is crap its not my first language)
Try this for a start: #dnd-newcomers message

Okay thanks man!
@tawny tartan hey there! Are you looking to post a game you're running, or find one to play in?
Post a game I'm running
im looking for a game i can join as player been playing dnd for a year now
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

Type
/looking
And it'll start offering suggestions. Pick the one for looking for players and hit Enter. It'll come up with a form to fill out with the details.
It might be worth doing it once to see the fields, then getting your details in a doc you can copy and paste from - I find it likes to time out when doing it on mobile.
You can create a post by typing /looking-for players in any channel and then filling out the fields. You can include a link to your server in the post.
Thank you
What’s that link?
sorry that should work it’s my
spell list but
i can’t send images so wait lemme get another link
It’s fine it’s just that you should tell us what the link is
Before you send it or immediately after
(Server rules)
yeah i forgot there was slowmode lol
It seems you’re missing a few Wizard spells, though would it be possible for you upload the PDF to a file sharing site instead of a picture? It’d make it easier to look over your sheet
ok! hold a sec
https://limewire.com/d/NcLfN#8cQ3ljAEB3 here it isss
okay so apart from character backstory what have i done wrong/needs adding or fixing
oh wait
i need to put it like more than 2 spells for l1 right..
A few questions:
- How did you generate your stats?
- Will you be playing the 2014 or 2024 version of the 5e ruleset?
i generated my stats (assuming you mean wisdom, charisma, etc) with standard array, and 2024
So if someone DMs me on Discord asking me to join their campaign, and then connects me with another guy who is supposedly the DM, and then that guy says a $150 commission is required to join the campaign, there's going to be 6 players, that we can do anything for characters and it's before doing a session 0, starting the campaign, or even MEETING the other players, it's like 150% chance a scam right?
Alright, so you’ve chosen the 2014 version of the Sage background, so you’d need to update it to the 2024 version. 2024 backgrounds come with Ability score increases so since you chose a 2014 species you’ll need to not take the ASIs granted by your species
And then for spells as per the Basic Rules you start with 3 Wizard Cantrips and 6 level 1 Wizard spells, 4 of which you need to mark as prepared
okay whats the sage asi?
bc ive taken off the +1 cha for moon elf
i think i fixed it
As per the Basic Rules, backgrounds give your choice of:
- +2 to 1 stat and +1 to another
- +1 to 3 different stats
The stats that can be increased depend on the background. The info for Sage is here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Sage
You’d also need to take off the +2 Intelligence that the base elf species gives you
Also did you mean Astral Elf? Moon Elf isn’t an official playable option
SCAG does list Moon Elf as a sorta thematic variant of High Elf, iirc
Ah I see that’s why it wasn’t coming up for me
yeah sorry i meant like high elf but it said u can class urself as like a high moon or sun elf idrk
i meant high elf
but could i keep the +2 on it if i choose that as an addition to my stat as sage?
Yeah you could
Ultimately if it’s you’re choosing the same bonuses as your species would give you it technically doesn’t require any change, it’s just a check to make sure there’s no “double-dipping” stat boosts from using a 2014 species with a 2024 background
ok tyy i’m gonna head to bed and work more on this in the morning but this rlly helped gng!
No problem happy to help!
Yo im trying to start playing DND with anyone want to start a campaign with me right now

Follow the easy steps in the bot to find a group or players
Just a quick question- what do people generally charge for paid games (just on average)? Also, do they charge once or per session?
It's supposed to be covering the costs of a professional experience. & it's typically recurring
But what is an average cost?
15-20 per person per session, in my experience. But I don't know if that's really the average. I've definitely seen higher
I’ve seen higher but not often and usually those are big one shots or sessions that last HOURS
Im assuming its usually one session a week? For the normal sessions I mean
I pay 25 usd per session for my Tuesday night game
I’ve seen a little less but again very rare
Could be once a week, could be once a month, could just be one-offs
Exactly. In other words not much of an easy answer
The paid games I've run in the past were just one-offs for conventions
But some people offer whole campaigns
If I wanted to learn DMing, would it be beneficial to learn being a player first or is that just unnecessary. I’m not really sure what I wanna do yet
That depends on how learn best. Honestly
It's probably easier to DM after you've played, but it's definitely not required
Plenty of people do start as the DM
Alright, thanks for the help :)
how many encounters should i plan for a oneshot that im aiming for 4 hours duration?
depends on encounter size I'd imagine
im trying to fit an introduction, 1 hopefully short combat encounter, a roleplay encounter about convincing a paladin to break his oath, and a small 6 room dungeon that has 1 combat encounter, 2 puzzles, and a final fight with multiple stages into one oneshot for relatively new players, im not sure if this is unreasonable or not
ngl dnd might js be the best game to ever exist
sounds reasonable for four hours
This is good. If you finish early, use the extra time for a debrief. What went well, what wasn't so good, what they'd look forward to next time. Rules clarifications, tactics used or missed, etc.
for the other 3 rooms of the dungeon, should i just add lore/worldbuilding items or should i add smaller encounters?
Not all rooms have to be interesting.
is it typical for dungeons to have empty rooms?
Sure. The ceiling is too low or looks unstable, the air is foul, it's riddled with damp and mold, it's used as a midden, storage, animals currently absent, any reason.
oh perfect
basically they get a little blurb of flavor text if they search it; but otherwise nothing really there
My take is that everything should have a purpose, even if its purpose isn't discretely about gameplay (specifically roll-play).
If there's a room in a dungeon, it has some purpose. It has to or else it wouldn't have been built. Even if it's just a storage closet, there's something in that room. Even if it's not "important," there's at least an opportunity for environmental storytelling.
And who knows, maybe one of your players will run with it. You can roleplay some kind of fun moment with improv alone, if inspiration strikes.
But more to the point, there doesn't have to be a fight in every room. Think of how many fights you want in the dungeon, then that's how many fights there will be. Then all you have to do is place them.
Sorry for disturbance, anyone have any link to a detailed guide of avrae?
I wanna run a mini campaign with monsters but no idea how to use avrae bot
#ddb-avrae-help may help
Sup, I'm new
I am also new to the server
👋
Any ways in 5e or 5.5e to cast a spell that takes an action as a bonus action
cartomancy, quickened spell, thief rogue utilizing spell scroll
Oath of the Ancients level 20 feature
Well that’s great and all but I think I’ll stick to cartomancy
Action: fey touched dissonant whispers
BA: cartomancy spell
Reaction: warcaster, a cantrip
Haste: an attack of some form
Might take 2 levels in fighter for action surge to attack again
hi
Hello
Im new here
howdy!
Me too
I dont really know what to do here
well are you looking to learn more or find a game or get help?
or to just chat about d&d?
ah well as far as getting started learning, #learn-to-play has useful info, for finding a game you can use the bot by following the instructions in #find-a-game , for chatting there's #dnd-discussion
Ah okay thanks
this channel often has good convos about dnd as well
So D&D from what ive heard is basically jusr roleplay with extra stuff?
ya it's a set of rules to help players roleplay. more like guidelines than rules even.
Ah okay. And your basically can make a character about anything as long it follows the DM's logic, is not to over powered, and is overall interesting?
you'll want to talk to the dm about what character ideas you have that would fit the tone of their campaign (this kind of goes both ways, the players of a game may all be looking for a given tone and the dm may be amenable to shifting to that tone) but ya, using the character options okayed by the dm and trying to make a character that makes sense with what you know about the campaign, you make whatever within those constraints
Okay and what does homebrew mean? Ive heard of it on videos and to my understand it's when the DM make special logic/properties to the campaign?
oh sure, a lot of tables have some sort of houserules that are considered homebrew. homebrew can also refer to third party content, like material from the internet or from a book off dmsguild or something
Gotcha and last thing I wanna ask, what does each role do in D&D? like Bard, rogue, Barbarian, those kind of roles.
Ill take simplifed answers so its easier for you
hmm, well each class has several subclasses, so that actually becomes a bit tricky. i wonder if i can come up with a nice simple answer for that...
^ each class has subclasses which can make it difficult to do that, but I can try too
imagine that some classes like cleric, bard, and druid have better access to healing, other casters have better access to damage, warlocks are short rest casters, rogues often hide or somehow get in sneak attacks, fighters can be a lot of things. some classes have access to better armor and weapons in exchange for usually more limited casting. martials often have fewer decision points than casters, especially full casters.
i've left a lot out
Dang Im using OW terms over here
But what im getting is that some classes are basically medics, others and magic users, and others are likes tanks.
Thats what Im getting at least
not sure if there are many classes that tank well, 5e doesn't have much in the way of mechanical ways to prevent others from getting hit. there are ways, but not like some previous editions
Got it
there are certainly classes that are good at getting hit
So basic just damage
