Ah gotcha gotcha ty
I genuinely thought it was a bug or something for a second, big shame

I have a question about dndbeyond
ask away
I subscribed to the master subscription for dndbeyond. However when I try to add someones homebrew to my collection. It still says I need a subscription
best bet is to ask in #ddb-support
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
Thank you
Question: does backstory for a character HAVE to tie in their race?
Absolutely not
I suppose for a race such as warforged it probably would but the more mainstream ones such as elves and tieflings only affect backstory if you want them to
It was originally for a friends game but I'm not longer in that group so the characters just been rotting in a notes app idea
He's an Orc paladin, do those work together?
Quite well actually
Hello, I am a not-so-new player but my characters are never really that thought out so if any of the experienced players here feel like it i would love to see what backstories you have for your characters
i just wanna see where i should put the bar
One of my paladins was a fae prince who’s beloved tore out her heart and placed it in his chest, which turned her evil
His oath was to return her heart to her
I'm new but I have an Orc paladin bound by oath after his village is slaughtered, the ghost of his wife haunts him so he prays to a god and they actually answer, causing him to lead a life of faith until he ultimately leaves his god
HELLO?! Sobbing this is so good
Generally speaking, it can be as complex as you wish as long as you can sum it up in at least a paragraph
0o0
Thank you! I wanted to explain the Summer and Winter courts being at war with each other
I’ve not gotten to use him in a campaign yet
Ugh my Orc would help your elf return his wife's heart
My first character was this blood hunter whose Order was exterminated by some Lich when he was a kid but the Lich spared him just for the love of the game
find me when u grow up type shi
but then that's it, for his personality he was basically the witcher but a bit more frindly
Mihawk and Zoro......
lmao
Hey! I’m pretty new to D&D but not so new to writing fantasy, would you want to swap backstories?
May I recommend #character-discussion for that?
This channel is more for helping folks new to D&D get started with the core game rules and mechanics
u right
I'm good but thanks for offering
Tim drake pfp!!!
Tim drake mention!
Does anyone know where to make a D&D character online? I tried making one on D&D Beyond but it’s as greedy as king Midas from mythology
Anything not in the free rules/SRD is going to cost money regardless of platform: Roll20, D&DBeyond, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds...
So unless you're willing to buy the books, you're going to be stuck with the free stuff.
Which is perfectly fine to start playing D&D with - the books just provide more options to work with.
is Eldritch Knight good
I’d say so, yes
Any subclass can be good with enough effort put into it
I’d more ask ‘is it fun to play’ and ‘do I want to play it’
Admittedly for a few it’s a…lot more effort, but my point stands
i thought of a funny fighter that uses magic to disable magic
kind of like thanos using the stones to destroy the stones
i might need multiclassing...
DnD doesn’t have all too much of that, mostly counterspell and antimagic field
Hello guys. I'm very new to playing D&D. Before making a character, which dice storage and dice tower do you recommend for a complete beginner to buy to store dice? Should I get a simple tower with a tray or a nice storage case that has slots for dice and a space for rolling them?
I just use a dice bag and the table c:
just down to what you prefer, find something nice online or even learn how to make one!
Imma post the new player spiel so you have access to the info there as well

how do you do wealthy stuff
i have a character that's supposed to be rich (227 years of living, with a human sense of urgency, who wouldn't get rich??)
how would his assets of 100 platinum pieces be kept to balance the starting equipment shenanigans
Why is a person this rich looking to go on an adventure in the first place?
Anyways, players start with the amount of money granted by the character creation, you don't get to cheat in more by having a backstory, like you couldn't do something like starting with a heirloom legendary weapon of your hero parent 😛
One option is to have them have access to something like a nice house / houses in various cities, or other assets that they can't just directly benefit from besides narratively, like having a place for the party to stay at, or hired help, who obviously will not just leave their job to follow them into dangerous dungeons. (And also selling the properties shouldn't be allowed, or should be used for something like narrative trades)
Coudl have the property be tied up in some ultracomplicated trust so that they can use them but selling them would take like 20 years of cutting through red tape so they're better off left as is
Maybe the hook that got them into the adventure was their wealth being stolen
i thought of like
having 125gp as starting, 100pp for heirloom shi that they have to go to an adventure or series of deals to access just a tiny amount
its like how gangs store their wealth by scattering them across places, connections, and abstract forms of wealth
Or they’re being sent on a deadly quest by their evil sibling to steal their money in a forged will
which one works better for the dm to mess around with
im not the dm this time around...
actually i totally got it wrong I was using dungeon{__} some other name and mixed it up. Thank you for offering the help though! i think i'll just use free sites for now and I'll look into paid options if I wanna go deeper
Hello! I’m (sort of?) a new player to d&d, and looking to be my friend group’s DM. I’ve played Baldur’s Gate 3 for a good amount of my time so I think that I have the basics down, but I’m wondering if I should be learning anything else that wasn’t in the game. Or should I be a player first before trying to DM? I’m probably the only one in my group that’s more knowledgeable about the game, but I wanna make sure I get everything to make it much more enjoyable for them.
#dm-discussion is a good source for experienced advice, and don’t feel afraid to make a mistake or seventeen, it’s a part of learning a new thing!
Bg3 is a decent basis but some things are obviously different in the tabletop
uhm... hi!
i'm interested in finding a dnd campaign to join :D
i don't have a mic, tho...
Well, first i recommend getting a base understanding of the rules (look at #learn-to-play )
Second, check out #looking-for-players and make a post on #looking-for-dm by typing /looking-for-dm.
Third, not having a mic doesn’t exclude you from online games thankfully, but it does make it harder.
You can try and find Play By Post (pbp) games, which are text based, and or ask DM’s if you can communicate via text while others do voice.
#looking-for-community should have some PBP servers
There’s also the option for a local games store, friend group or library to play irl
You absolutely dont have to be a player first, just note that BG3 is a lot different from DND
Just so I understand correctly, Wizard starts with 3 cantrips of my choice and when I use Sage background I get Magic Initiate which gives me another 2? So I have 5 at level 1?
As per players handbook 2024 rules
yes
Also the Wizard page states that when I level up as a Wizard I can add spells to my spellbook, but later on it says it costs 50 GP to add spells to the book?
you get to add some spells for free every level up, but if you find spells in game, you can add them too for the gold cost
ah good to know
hi im a new player
Hello
Hello
Hi I’m new
hello o/ is this server purely US based or does it have EU gamers too?
Worldwide! But the server language is English.
However, if you're putting an ad up in #looking-for-dm do feel free to state your preferences. Also I know that Roll20 has an option to filter for games by language, if that helps.
if you look in #looking-for-players , you might find games compatible with your schedule/sleep cycle regardless of the location of the other players, especially on the weekends

Hey everyone! I’m completely new to D&D — like, first time ever
I’ve created my first character (a Paladin) and I’d love to know if my character sheet is correct.
If anyone’s willing to take a look, let me know. Thanks!
Sure! Share the link here and we'll check it
I have it in a PDF is it okay if i send it to you in a dm?
Is a character sheet
Hi completely new to D&D, I’m Nugget.
And as it’s very late, unless you can send it here sorry I probably won’t check it
hi uh i just got done making my first character sheet
Hello
I made my first character sheet.... a Rogue
Guide me on what to do next pls
hello, i've finished my first (and probably bad) character sheet
This is an okay next step

hello! im very new to d&d and im quite overwhelmed with the amount of content i feel like i have to understand, and i have a couple questions id like to ask before trying my first game 🥹
id really appreciate if a more experienced player could dm me! (I have lots of questions but i feel like theyre a but stupid, so im shy about sending them in a server ;;)
Which pro D&D players are easiest for new people to watch on stream?
ask away
You can DM me if you like, but I encourage you to ask questions here, it's overwhelming to most people

Don't try to take it all in straight away. Skim the first couple of sections of the Free Rules, maybe look at putting a character together. Class, background, species, no wrong choices. (Well, except for Soldier on a character that's not going to be a warrior, anyway)
Read up a few posts to Mr smiths 🙂
can't believe i've become the healer in both my dnd campaigns (wizard and sorcerer)
acolyte background wizard delivering cure wounds via raven familiar, and divine soul sorcerer
The only HP that counts is the last one!
noted, ty!!
I haven't rolled above a 3 in even a single initiative roll so far this campaign
wizard with extremely slow reflexes
always surprised when my +0 dex character rolls above a 10
There are many. CaptainRoBear is a great option, imo, for example...
literally in the same boat as you, and i don’t really want to pay for a game just due to the fear of random folks
would recomend going through this to begin with so you have an idea how the game works; don't need to memorize it but you want to know where to look for things and the basics;
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.

imo, it's fine to leave after a session if it's not working for you
Thouugh it's polite to say something rather than ghost
Even if that something is just "hey, this isn't working for me so I'm not continuing"
Here's the thing, I know how the game works fairly well. I've spent too much time learning the rules but I have near zero experience on what to do in an actual campaign.
Ofc, I would never ghost anyone and waste their time. Though I'm currently applying to stuff without knowing what to expect,
Not every group meshes, it's just the way it is
Most people I've played with are happy to help new people if they put in the effort
But sometimes you just don't click
How to find a dnd group irl?
when you say irl I assume you mean physically meeting up?
check your local LGSs, libraries, community centers, board-game cafes, and maybe if there's a local discord/reddit or anything like that
Hello hello
Does local tcg stores a good idea?
I am new to dnd can anyone help me.
possibly.. stores that have MTG cards, Warhammer or comic books sometimes also host D&D games.

In my experience, there are a few communities that host monthly events and most universities here have a RPG/Tabletop games based student community who sometimes host D&D games. Also knowing where these games tend to be hosted also helps since the locations themselves also advertise these events
I will check tomorrow. Actually I did find a dnd group from a local board games cafe. Problem is the cafe is quite far from home, about an hour to get by. So I am dropping that one after one session.
Not sure if its a good decision
Up to you, different countries have different stances on commute so I wouldn't know what an hour means for you
I would always recommend making a decision after giving it a bit of time to adjust first
I’m a first time dm if someone can help me in the dm world building chat it would help a ton
Let’s playy
#dm-discussion can get you sorted most likely
oop, or that XD
actually reading the message before replying helps
sure im also a newbie but i can help you!
what would u propose instead? Speed is distance over time. D&D uses feet per turn (6 seconds) which is a distance over a time frame
30 feet of movement is a distance
very irksome indeed
Yeah. And character levels aren't the same as spell levels, and yet.
My find a game thing disappeared does that mean people responded to it
It disappears after a weak, else bring it up with the mods

Also see #learn-to-play

oh ok thanks :D
Also there's a good YouTube video from WASD20 that goes over the process as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXwYXyKwaDo
And if you stumble on anything that confuses you, feel free to ask for help!
Thanks y'all also uh can your characters be animals because ive seen it but idk
I have been reading Beyond DND and I have questions about the short rest and the long rest. A short rest is 1 hour and a long rest is 8 hours. I don't know how it works in game. Does the rest period last a few turns or is it real life hours/time?
They could be purely animals if it were a homebrewed campaign, or you could turn into animals in 5e rules with wild shape as a Druid
Hellooo I’m new to dnd
Both happen in a matter of seconds out of game.
Okay thanks
where can i join a basic campaign
Browse #looking-for-players and reply to the ads that interest you!
How can i have characters be verified for campaigns?
you can post links to character sheets in #character-discussion - but we can't really verify them for someone else's campaign
I'm not sure what you mean by wanting them verified I suppose
hey, im a new dnd player thats looking to DM my own campaign please feel free to dm me if you want to join
Refer to #looking-for-players to post your campaign. Also, if you want ideas and feedback to help mold your campaign, #dm-discussion is where you want to go.
@steel ocean
To make a post, please go to #find-a-game
Oh it’s just in some groups I join they verify your characters so it matches within their standard so I guess that’s what I was referring to as far as verifying it
You can send your character to #character-discussion to get it reviewed, but each table and game is different
What some may accept here won’t be accepted elsewhere
Hello there,
New player here. I found this Discord link on the D&D: Beyond forums. If I'm in the wrong channel, please direct me to the correct one.
I'm looking to start playing D&D online. I've made a character. I did my best to make it alright, as I have no clue what I'm doing. I also have a friend who is just as new as me who wants to play.
I've been an avid gamer since I was about 5. I'm 37 now. MMORPG/RPG are my main genres.
I hope someone can guide me to the correct DM's or other players to dive in.
Thanks!

Hello
So I finished my 101 campaign it was a lot of fun. I am starting an ongoing campaign tomorrow it’s session 2 so not at very start but close enough.
I played a bard in 101 but for this I made a paladin
Is paladin a fun class to play? I notice I will probably deal a lot less damage and have less support but I made my paladin very tough with an 18 ac up from my bards 9ac
Paladins are great
And they do comparable if not more damage than bards iirc
But certainly less support, though Aura of Protection is very strong
Their roleplay potential is also elite
Cool tyvm I am taking a vow to show mercy to even my enemies and if within my power a second chance at redemption
I took cure wounds and divine smite for my first abilities
I have a loose backstory where as a boy I stole a loaf of bread to feed my family and the local lord took pity on me and gave me a second chance as his squire eventually making me a knight and sending me off to bring peace in his name
Scratch last part just fixed it in character creation I no longer have bad strength I did bad math lol I knew something was off about it I did it at like 3am this morning so math was way off
What level are you?
Makes sense
The campaign starts at like 3pm tomorrow
You won’t get Oath of Redemption abilities till level three
Oh nice! Have fun!
Cool tyvm for info and tips
Is your picture a niffler? Like from Harry Potter? I love the niffler it’s cute
Awesome I am hufflepuff myself
Well you have a great night I think now that I fixed my math I can rest and be ready for tomorrow I need to get there like an hour early to meet up with dungeon master who wants to have like a little one on one session zero before having me join the group

hello
uh just make a character (talk to your DM i use dnd beyond too) then get your dm and your friends and its basically roleplaying
you roll dice and do little checks every time you do smth
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
Can i be DM from the start? I got an cool story idea lol
Plenty of people have started their D&D journey as a DM!
If you’d like to discuss your campaign ideas we have #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building just for that purpose
Oh cool, is there any place to know the basics of DM?
The Basic Rules contain all the rules you need to know to start playing + a pretty good guide on how to be a DM
The aforementioned channel #dm-discussion is also a good place to ask for advice
Okay ty
So is there a good mobile app for character creation
New player by the way
The DDBeyond character creator works fairly well on mobile
Oh cool
Yeah dndbeyond app is good
Hello. My name is Marlin, and I recently decided to pick up DND, but I have little to no knowledge about it except for DND races. I'm also making my character right now, and I want to check up on the DND handbook, but I don't have my own money access stuff and I can't buy a physical handbook either because my country doesn't play things like DND. I want to know if there's any way that I can learn more about DND without having to buy the handbook. I apoligize if my english is bad. It is my second language.

Hi. I legit don't know what i am doing. Idk how to play or how to start. I wanna join a campain. Is there someone who can help me get started?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
thanks
I don't know if this is the right place to ask for it but, I'm pretty new to the game and I mostly play as the DM, and usually whenever I have to prepare something I just write them down on a piece of paper. Now I've heard that there's certain websites that can help you with that but the ones I know are only Inkarnate and DND Beyond. Are there anymore DND related sites that helps new DMs prepare their campaign?
For balancing encounters KoboldFightClub is a fairly well used site

Question. When i make a
character sheet. Should i do that before or with a DM?
Usually it's better to make a sheet specific to the campaign, and the DM might even require it, but it's gonna depend on the DM
No harm in having a general plan, or making a character ahead of time for practice or just for fun, but also be prepared to remake it / change it if required 😎
What do I need to make a character?
An understanding of the character creation rules and a character sheet at base.
The CC rules are part of the Basic Rules, linked in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
I recommend starting from the beginning, just to get the fundamentals down so terms used in character creation aren’t confusing. The website the BR is hosted on, D&DBeyond, also has a character creator with the Basic Rules integrated. While it guides you through a good bit of it, I recommend using it alongside reading the BR.

Hello
on paper?
hi
Is this game complicated?
it can be. it can also be pretty straightforward. it depends a whole bunch on what the game is and what you are trying to do and how things are set up

and the very heart of it, the game master says a situation. you say what you do based on that situation. the game master has you roll a 20 sided dice. depending on the results, you either succeed, almost succeed, fail, or really badly fail. usually its just succeed or fail. then the game master describes what happens. and it goes back to the start
@cedar sluice yes been playing my 1st campaign for about 3 or 4 weeks now some things were not sure about and thats one of them
Read the bot message posted here: #dnd-newcomers message
if you read the information for your class, it will have what additional things you get when you level up. subclasses also have some things. for the most part, you get additional hit points for each level. sometimes that's all you get.
as for on paper, you can erase and replace on the sheet, or you can write up a new sheet with all of the old and new information.
you can check out the #learn-to-play channel and read up on some stuff, and then head over to the #find-a-game to read up on how to find a group
@cedar sluice havnt gotten to the sub class options yet just from lvl 1 to 2
like i said, each player will have to check their class to see what they get at level 2. every class gets an additional hit die (to heal a bit on short rests), and additional hit points to their maximum. roll the hit die (or take the average) and then add CON modifier. add that to your current maximum hit points
G@cedar sluice got you appreciate the advice
spellcasters might gain additional spells, it all depends on what's written with the specific class.
hello
Hey guys I need someone to tell me if I did my character sheet alright www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/tackohz_160596101.pdf
Ability scores look a little high at a glance, interesting pick of skills, I like to see some variety. You've got duplicates in your spell list.
Ah, did you put all three improvements in Intelligence? Look again, you need to pick different abilities for each.
A bag of holding isn't in the options for standard starting gear either.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/160602897/Zypica can someone look over my character and make any corrections if i made any mistakes?

Rogue
Launch deadly Sneak Attacks while avoiding harm through stealth
Rogues rely on cunning, stealth, and their foes’ vulnerabilities to get the upper hand in any situation. They have a knack for finding the solution to just about any problem. A few even learn magical tricks to supplement their other abilities. Many Rogues focus on stealth and deception, while others refine skills that help them in a dungeon environment, such as climbing, finding and disarming traps, and opening locks.

Seems like you haven't done your ability scores or background, and you have a second set of leather armour.
I’m kind of confused with ability scores could I get some help
Put it to Standard Array. The suggested outlay is just above, but you can have it different if you want. A rogue will always need high Dexterity and never put Constitution lower than 10. Apart from that, go with what feeds into your skills, I'd say.
Alright thanks
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/160602897/GnHS2J should be fixed
Can someone check if I did this character right? It's my first one and I used homebrew for the species so yeah https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/160532854
Still need to set a background and confirm the choices for your ability scores, far as I can see.
This for @mortal breach .
Rolled for stats?
Yep
And your DM verified them?
Still don't got one, just making a character to learn how stuff works
Generally better to use Standard Array or Point-Buy for that. The important part is knowing where you want your high numbers and what you can let slide. You seem to have the priorities right for a sorcerer, so that's good!
Cool, I could use point buy if that's better. I just assumed rolling was the common way
rolling is pretty common but its also common to have to do that with the DM as witness
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/160532854 Is this more balanced?
looks pretty good. did you select all of your spells? seems light but its been a long while since I built a level 1 sorcerer
Yeah, It's 4 cantrips and 2 spells for level 1 i think
yup I just confirmed that to be true. dang it lol. But looks like a good start my friend

are you planning to play in person with pencil and paper or are you planning on doing stuff online?
I want to play with Friends in person
either way you can play for free.
there's a set of free rules for the 2024 version or 2014 version on DnDBeyond.
through discord and a virtual tabletop. its more like a zoom meeting

You can download free maps/dungeons online and also get some pre made character sheets
if you have access to a printer you can print out blank character sheets to fill them out by hand using the rules
Well, If I have more questions I'll search You to ask
we're all pretty good in here at trying to help. i just happened to be here right at this time.
what is the best platform to play dnd?
i do have the link to the older essentials kit rulebook pdf on the Wizards of the Coast site, for the 2014 rules. it isn't the most recent rules, but its got enough to make a character.
"BEST" all depends on a whole bunch of things. and is different from person to person. i like to play in person with physical books, physical minis, physical maps, physical character sheets and pencils, physical dice, a physical DM screen, etc.
but that's me.
a lot of people really like the character manager on DnDBeyond, along with their Maps virtual tabletop.
i think maps is free. your options will be limited to what's available for free, though.
hello I'm getting into DND with my friends (with me DMing) with the help of the starter kit heroes of the borderlands, did anyone try it? I saw online that it's a good starting point for newcomers with his comprehensive the contents are
I have not done it personally but I have heard it’s a great starter and I have two players that played it before coming to my table and they enjoyed it
I'm just playing it rn, it's my first dnd as well
It's really well written we enjoy it a lot
I've also went a bit off script and incorporated some of my own lore and what the players do so it's more fun
It starts in the wilderness and the party just explores with random stuff happening depending on what they do. It has 4 regions and the city.. it's really nice.
We found that the combat encounters are WAYYY too easy but you can adjust them by adding a monster or two and see how it goes 😄
Can someone explain how spell slots work when multiclassing as if I am a 3 year old
Your class levels go to form your spellcaster level. Different classes are worth different amounts. Then check against the table in the multiclassing section.
Do you have a character you want to check?
No I'm just wondering for future, so say I have 3 levels in paladin and 2 in wizard that makes my class level 5 and I have 4 1st level spell slots and 3 2nd and 3rd level spell slots
I said different classes are worth different amounts.
All your levels in the Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, and Wizard classes
Half your levels (round up) in the Paladin and Ranger classes
One third of your Fighter or Rogue levels (round down) if you have the Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster subclass.
So using my example the Paladins spell slots level is 2 and the wizards is also 2 meaning I use the level 4 spell slots?
Yup!

Is it a balancing thing where it's to prevent someone from having the full amount of spell slots from multiclassing as half the caster classes?
Let's say yes.
Great, I will no longer pry into this as to make sure I still understand it
Where can I get a guide of the monsters and enemys of the Game?probably 2014
Did i do good?
Well, more specifically here, I guess: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/monsters#MonsterStatBlocks
hi, i do i need to read all the rules? i read the basic rules
and i don´t know if i can learn learn as i go
You don't need to read all the rules, but having the gist—d20 Tests, what your character can do—will go a long way. Some groups will be very open to teaching folks, but that's certainly not true for all of them!
no, just the first two chapters of the free basic rules; specifically 'Playing the Game' and 'Creating A Character
hello
Read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers; There's a short interactive module you can play to get a feel for the game, or you could seek out gameplay videos online. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
ok then...
just posting it in case you need the info
just like i said yesterday just looking for a friend
genuine friend..... and getting into this
first steps are learning the rules and finding a group to play with c:
went through that and a wikipedia article on this, happy
yep c:
make a practice cahracter too if you'd like, you can drop it in #character-discussion for critique; or if you're feeling confident enough, you could start looking for a group to join in #find-a-game
might do that just nervous on something (one i think it might be stupid the first character, and two everyone might think im soft, especially that im japanese)
you're likely fine, your DM will help you with the character creation process for an actual campaign and no one should take issue with you being japanese
if they do, talk with your DM about it because that's not okay
and if it's your DM that's the problem leave the group and find another one, also consider informing the mods here if it was a game advertised on this server so they might be banned from posting them if theres a record of such issues
👋
ok
where to go?
This isn’t particularly a looking for players game post, but I’ve noticed most games occur when I’m unavailable. I work graveyard shift so can anyone point me to the best place to look for games that happen anywhere from midnight to 10pm-3am pst?
might have better luck on the r/lfg subreddit, seen a far wider range of times on there verses here
it's part of why I include it in my version of the new player information
Thanks for the info! 😁
Can I use DnD beyond to plan a physical campaign? If so, how would that work out
like keep stat blocks and character sheets and stuff in there? Sure

Study arcane magic and master spells for every purpose
Wizards are defined by their exhaustive study of magic’s inner workings. They cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, and spectacular transformations. Their magic conjures monsters from other planes of existence, glimpses the future, or forms protective barriers. Their mightiest spells change one substance into another, call meteors from the sky, or open portals to other worlds.

I feel like joining any group also, ive got a ref sheet for my oc dnd stat... But it's not quite finished yet!
Hello. New to the game and started at one hobby shop with sessions on Daggerheart. I've been having fun so far and hoping to look into other sessions as much as I could. May had few ideas for my characters, but will learn as much as I can.

Well I definitely had an interesting first night in my campaign we have a serial killer canabal and a skeleton who murdered a kid because he was a con artist and we had to do some quick persuasion to not be hunted by the city guard
I have another 3 sessions I paid for so I will see how this campaign goes if it’s something I wish to stick with long term or find something else in March
It was certainly entertaining and enjoyable to see the dungeon master react to the groups unusual choices it was overall very fun night
not finished with my OC (because of fears and that) but looking for a group whos sympathetic to someone like me a Japanese American
Check out #find-a-game
Would be nice to see if it would be alright to have this dnd oc to be in any campaign, thinking of doing some dnd by the time i get back home!
Hey, new to D&D I know the very basics, have built a character (probably done it wrong 😂) hoping anyone can give some tips, and maybe have a look at my character sheet to see what I should change?
Sure, send it
@hearty blaze I'll send it in DMs if that's OK? Not able to send links here yet
You can send links here tho
I generally don’t recommend multiclassing for newbies, but otherwise it looks fine
What’s the backstory?
And do you have a DM yet?
I was going for a character that pretty much describes me in a way and that was the best way I could find that would most fit that
Should be on the page? Or is that not visible?
No yet, no
DnD beyond doesn’t show it
Then I don’t recommend having a magic item yet
Ah fairr, I'll copy and paste it here then
That's fair
Kryven grew up surviving on the streets, always moving, always scheming. Quick-witted, hyperactive, and mischievous, he learned to rely on cleverness, speed, and a touch of magic. He thrived on chaos, pranks, and testing limits, never caring much for rules or authority.
Over time, he became fascinated with magic and the thrill of combining it with his natural skills in thievery. Now, he seeks to become the greatest thief that ever lived, pulling off audacious schemes and pranks that leave others in awe or frustration. Every heist, trick, and stunt is a chance to prove his cleverness and entertain himself, often at the expense of anyone who underestimates him.
Needs some work but its a basic one
Yeah that works
I removed boots of elvenkind and bag of holding
Anything else?
I've added a few custom skills and actions, but that will be completely up to the discretion of the DM as to whether they can be used or not
Nothing game breaking or OP, I made sure they fit well with my character and within the game as a whole, but will obviously be up to the DM
Not anything glaring
I can send screenshots of my custom actions and skills if you don't mind also having a look at those just to see if they're too much or not?
Nah, I’m good
No worries, thanks for your help
The thing is i live in the middle of nowhere and Idk anyone that plays dnd
Ah but you could know folks who play D&D elsewhere.
See #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group to play D&D with (most D&D games posted here would be for online games).
If u pick up booming or green flame blade instead of poisen spray u can use it with metamagic to attack an extra time
Are u going for anything in particular with this multiclass because you kinda have to know what your doing for it
You could also review games posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and apply to those games
Also check out Roll20, Demiplane, and other TTRPG forums and servers for games
kinda waiting at the thing im applying for kinda new, worried everyone might think im soft or useless
Yeah I get what you mean, the multiclass is mostly for what i think suits the character and for utility. Rogue’s still the main focus, the sorcerer dip just supports the trickster/chaotic side and gives me a few extra options. I just feel like the rogue-sorcerer mix suits the character best, and it’s only a very light dip into sorcerer, still very rogue focused
The character is meant to be kinda like me, very... ADHD 😂
If you want magic with a rogue, I would just do arcane trickster
Granted, I like sorcerer rogues for the ability to booming blade with innate sorcery and quickened spell
I couldn't do arcane trickster with DDB, wasn't an option for me
Ah yeah you need the PHB
Ah fair, yeah I'm limited to free content right now as I'm self employed and Don't have any work currently
Wizard Initiate.
In that case I would probably recommend going for rouge 5 sorcerer 1
That way u can still have the extra ac from the 1st level armour spell I can't remember the name of and one of the blade spells but your character isn't being made worse by having a ton of features that don't work together
Also there's a point that rouge doesn't really get anything that useful for the rest of there levels so u can go full sorcerer then
and just hoping someone sees it
(I’d get sorc 2, personally, for metamagic)
Being new ain’t a crime or anything, many new players join every day
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1467764077794431008 heres the submission if youre interested
Yeah that's fair, tbh looking at it, I'll likely do that, maybe rogue 4, sorc 2 for metamagic like @hearty blaze said, although booming/green flame blade isn't available for me as I don't have TCoE for those
Do you have true strike?
I'll have a look
I think you do, and true strike is quite good for rogues in 2024 rules (ONLY in 2024, please)
Yes I do
Granted again, it’s multiclassing and I don’t particularly recommend that for a newbie. If you want magic I’d just go magic initiate tbh
But if you really wanna it’s fine
Why not 2014? Was it not a thing in the 2014 guide?
True strike is frankly very bad in 2014
Ah that's fair
It underwent a massive change in 2024, which made it actually good
Btw if you do go true strike bump up your charisma a lot
True strike scales off your spellcasting stat
Charisma is currently 15+2
is it ok nuget
That’s fine.
Not specifying your availability isn’t doing too much favours tbh
Else it’s usable
But I'll have a look into magic initiate, reading into it, it's pretty much what I was trying to do by multiclassing with sorcerer
Yeah, avoiding multiclassing if you’re new is generally a good idea
Once you’ve got a grasp of the game you can maybe do it later, but for now I’d say magic initiate is enough
Are you playing 2024 or 2014 btw?
Most likely 2024, but I'm making the same character twice (with minor tweaks) for both 2014 and 2024 depending on which i go for
Getting magic initiate is much harder in 2014, heads up. In 2024 you can get it from your background or being a human, as well as a feat, but in 2014 it’s only via a feat
Ah that's fair, other than that, as far as I know only real difference between 2014 and 2024 is some buffs and debuffs, and a few rule tweaks? Although please do correct me if I'm wrong
Classes overall got stronger, you get extra stats from your background instead of your species, everyone gets a free origin feat at level 1, and some classes get weapon masteries (additional weapon effects)
Plus a lot of feat and some spell changes
True strike is no longer pointless outside of edge cases, for one.
Ah fair, that's more helpful than the description i had from someone else 🤣 "you know when a game gets remastered? Yeah it's basically that" 😂
Yeah, they refused to elaborate 😂
Also finally found magic initiate, it's under acolyte 😂
Actually it's under sage too with the spells i want
There's two versions. Acolyte for the cleric one, Sage for the wizard list.
Yeah, realised that just now, was hoping for sorcerer, but I don't think I've got the content for that
Believe that's PHB
Tbf, the Wizard list is basically the Sorcerer list but better (unless you wanted Chaos Bolt).
That's fair
I’d love to join a campaign
i want to be the dm just for my friends, but I'm overwhelmed just by reading the dm guide book 😭
Hello
2024 basically merged chaos bolt into chromatic orb and both wizard and sorcerer have that

You certainly do not have to memorise all the stuff in the DM’s Guide. It’s mostly optional rules that can be used to improve the game, and it’s rarely stuff that comes up on the fly.
#dm-discussion can help you with any questions you might have or might be able to point you to further resources
The most important stuff in there is the advice on how to be a DM.
And you can ignore the Greyhawk gazetteer entirely unless you want to use the setting.
Hey, when I'm making a character and let's say my character is a wizard how do I remember all my abilities? Do I have to constantly keep looking at my books?
should also be on your character sheet for quicker reference..
when I first started I had post-it tabs on the pages where the things I kept needing to reference but had trouble remembering were..
as long as you look for that info before your turn and don't take too much time on your turn reading, its fine to have to go back to the books
it's how we all learned more or less
I'd make a spellbook for spells known and some kind of markers for which I have prepared.
hi guys, I'm from Russia. Can you help me understand this? Please send me a private message.

Well, I chatting whit someone . maybe i could if he has another spot open . ok?
You might also consider a different layout than the DnD Beyond PDF version. There is a lot of wasted space imo. I make my own from screen grabs of the online layout.
Okay. Thank you for the feedback.
I was more talking about a paper sheet and books but there are other formats to consider for sure
Hi guys, could you help me find a team for DND (preferably Russian)?
write in private messages
Yeah I should clarify. For new players I copy and paste the spell descriptions into their sheets so they don’t have to look them up. Like spells cards in the sheet.
As a new DM is it fine if I ditch the concept of distance in my campaign? Since all of my players are now and so am I, they don't really know the range of some things are so in a way I just tell them if something is far enough or close enough but not a specific distance
It will generally matter a lot for combat, but outside of that distances matter less
I just make up all of the distances, and my players just go with it
Close: within ten feet. Near: within thirty. Far: somewhere between thirty and a lot, generally long range for proper ranged weapons. Distant: close enough to spot, too far to hit (unless someone's specced for sniping).

Hi! A relative newbie here. I came up with an awesome character archetype, but for that I need to know how dipping in Warlock works. Can I gain Pact of Chain at 1st level?
No, you would get Pact of the Chain at level 3 as a Pact Boon
Under the 2024 rules warlocks get an invocation at level one, and Pact of the Chain is now an invocation. Far as I know (as you said dip) there's no multiclassing restriction there.
Ah, I'm still in 2014 so that revision for 2024 makes sense
This must have been my confusion as there were 2 different answers. Thanks! Cleric with dip to warlock here I come!
I take it it's more than find familiar you want?
For storytelling reasons and technical aspect, I need the Imp familiar.
Are you already playing or is this a build for the future?
just playing around with the concept. As a zealot of death clergy, they made a demon possess my character but my faith and boon I got from my deity made it so that the demon is bound to me and can manifest only as the imp. This also makes it my patron, giving small (lv1) warlock boons.
Ah. Interesting notion.
I also love the idea using Cure wounds and Inflict wounds as a ranged spells through my invisible imp. That I need to discuss with the DM do we houserule the invisibility on the imp to fail or not.Rules as written has the imp still be invisible as the spell and damage is my characters, not imps. It just feels a bit silly for me to have it be like that
I think Invisibility ends when you cast a spell.
It does, but the invisibility is imps spell/action. I can use familiar to relay my touch spells, which spellcasting and damage is my characters not imps. So mechanically, imp only takes a reaction to touch, but otherwise everything else is regarded to be done by character. Or so I have understood from the wild west of the google answers 😄
Oh, the spell does, but not the Imp version. Interesting.

Fire away.
i have just basic general questions like:
how do i find a group (i know there are ways like here, library, forum, facebook, etc) but im very shy and anxious too meet new people and i want to get out of my comfort zone and i dont know where to begin, it feels intimidating lol.
how much do books typically cost?
what is needed for dnd? I have my character, my online dice, plus the dice I've made myself, a journal thingy, pens, but i dont know what else
also do you have to pay to play?
I'm not really new to DND but I haven't played in awhile and would only really play with close friends. I want to get back into doing DND but I'm nervous about roleplaying as my character, do you have any advice on how to sort of get back into the social part of DND with random people?
You've already hit on some of the ways to find groups. Local libraries and game stores are often good bets because they might either host newbie sessions or know where/how to find them.
Books can range depending on whether you're buying physical or digital. But I would mentally estimate between $20 and $60 US.
You don't have to pay to play. It's an option but not mandatory. The only other things you need to play that you didn't mention are the rules (which are free online) and people.
Treat it like you were narrating their actions rather than acting them out. "Trogdor the Burninator slams a fist onto the table and demands more ale." That usually helps people feel less self-conscious.
Oooohhh that's a great idea! Thank you so much!

thank you, because all i was able to do till now was make a character in D&D Beyond... but i am so sure i made it wrong- and unplayable-(isn't op) so i'm trying to find my way around-
You can share your character for feedback in #character-discussion if you like, but if that feels like too much, maybe review the character creation rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character).
Have a look, pick a class, species and background from there, and we can offer some more directed tips.
How goes it guys.
I think I have done most things on my character build on dndbeyond but I think I have kinda lost myself in creation, still have to choose a language due to some rogue thing. While this isnt something I'm asking anyone to do now, is it normal to ask if someone more experienced could take a look to see if its fair game?
Late response ik but i need to know the rules of it basically
I have a question, are here LATAM players?or sessions to play speaking spanish?
Where do I go to look for a community of people or a group of people to play with
Almost certainly, but if you’re looking for Spanish games, you’ll probably be better off looking for a Spanish speaking D&D community.

@nocturne nymph Rules to get started are above.
Thanks it’s just me and my 1 friend who are both new
You’ll need more than two people for a game of D&D.
Hey I’m new as well and need people to play with
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a game - it's off-topic in the normal discussion channels.
See #find-a-game and read it carefully to learn how to use those channels.
And good luck with your search! Hope you find a great group to play D&D with!
First section of the Free Rules has what you need. Concentrate on d20 tests and combat. Check the Rules Glossary to get linked to things like the Hide action.
As a rogue specifically, read up on your sneak attack. You want to get that going as often as possible. It's only once per turn, but it's your major contribution to a stand-up fight.
I'm curious if this is a good idea. I'm new to DnD and going to be joining my first campaign Sunday but I'll be moving to a new home (My wife and I's new home) and was thinking of doing a DnD Housewarming Party with my coworkers. However I'd love to DM a One-Shot that day but don't really know how to play yet and wanted to see if this is at all a good idea. I wouldn't move till about 1-2 months from now.
Maybe You can try imagine first map, and there the story to continue, but, it's your decision, Good luck.
The idea I had for a DM one-Shot would be Winter Game of thrones esk where the big boss being a Wendigo
Maybe a good player of DND can answer that, well, need to wait, because i'm new, but DND it's a Game with freedom of imagination
I am new as well I played my first game back in 2019 and haven't played sense
So definitely want to get a couple reps as a player first before the 1-2 months to dm
I'm wanting to Buy a DND set to start this year, I found a set with everything to get started, including books I think, maybe I'll play it with my brother, how long does it last at least?
One of my buddies sent me the full PDF of the books so I'm just gonna start reading
I could see this being a great idea! One key, though, is how gracious the folks you invite to your table will be, whether they'll have fun regardless of how well it goes, if they're genuinely collaborative and forgiving of mistakes or if they'll be kind of a pill. Sometimes friends don't make good D&D friends (but obviously they sometimes do)!
But one or two months is plenty of time to learn the game and make enough of an adventure to last an evening, I think.
Hi. I’m Lily. I got into wanting to try DnD after playing BG3. Unfortunately none of my friends who play are available to play the days I am. So I thought I’d join some servers. See if I can make some friends and try a campaign for the first time.
Welcome!

I can't emphasize enough how much a pre-game chat (AKA session zero) can help to get everyone on the same page (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-how-to-run-a-session-0-for-your-d-d-game). You wouldn't throw a dinner party without asking folks about preferences, allergies, and the like, right? Same deal for a game!
Makes sense
Premade characters (plenty of free ones out there), Five Room Dungeon method.
What's this about Game of Thrones, though?
im a new player. is any dungeon master\ owner of a campaign open to showing me the ropes?? i already have a character made on D&D Beyond. https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/160684049

I just joined the server to look for a group to join me and my dm friend, but I can't use the bot, is it because I have the new status or do I have to do something else?
You can't use the bot? Make sure to allow embeds and make sure your Discord client is up to date.
Should still work on phon - make sure to run the commands directly on a channel here on the server. Direct messaging the bot won't work.
It wasn't, I switched to pc now
I know but unless I'm meant to do it in any channel, I can't send anything in the designated channels
Sorry I should have been more clear - you can run the commands on any channel here on the server that you can type into. Like this one. Or even #find-a-game
Ah alright thank you
I have no idea how to play
I don't have friends who know about D&D.
I wish I was able to play on my phone solo
Funny thing is that I tried to play with ChatGPT but it was letting me win everytime so got boring
Hello masters of dnd
I have come here to ask…
If my race is a tortle which gives me “your base ac is 17, your dexterity modifier doesn’t change this” but my class is a monk, which says “your base ac is 10+ your dex and wis modifier
My question is can I add the dex to my ac using the class feature if my race says that dex doesn’t change it?
Nope. It's either or with this. Either choose the title defense (which is natural armor and thus doesn't benefit from the monk ability) or use the monks unarmored defense system (see natural armor vs unarmored)
Hello im playing as a tabaxi is there and special things i get for being this race? Other than feline, agility and dark vision?
Me and my friend want play dnd games online but don’t know how to get in active dnd community
Hi
Howdy!
- Claws (1d6 unarmed damage)
- Bonuses to perception and stealth
- Climbing speed
I also just got an octopus trophy for beaks. Anybody have any ideas on what items I can make with that other than arrows.
There is a channel called #looking-for-community that has constant posts of communities for you to join as well as #looking-for-players that has people posting games to join
Does the game have a minimum age requirement?
If you can read, the ability to understand words and rules and have an imagination, you should be able to play dnd
No age minimum
Basically, know English xd
That's the language normally in DND
I’ve seen many Spanish and French players, they make it work
Yeah, but, for now, it's pay dlc's and other things to play in servers with other guys online
And I don't think many people actually play D&D in Spanish online here, and besides, I don't know of any Spanish servers.
Ye I know
But, I'm interested in that game
But I don't have +18
So I can't Buy DLC's
Those aren’t age locked if I recall
No, it's because I understand that you need money to buy them.
You can borrow them from libraries if there’s some near you
-# and there are ways to get money even if you’re under 18 in many places, though I don’t know your circumstances
In short, I couldn't. I go to a relatively advanced school and my parents wouldn't let me work with outsiders, so I have other methods during the school year
With saving I could
If you find a table, some may be willing to share their books with you
I recommend also making a post in #looking-for-players if you haven’t already
Or choose someone from #looking-for-dm too
Thank You, but I think I'll come back to play on december or June-july
Hi! I'm kinda new here and I'm startina to learn dnd, I would like to find some players, I have never plaved dnd before. Ilive in France and no one here knows what dnd is (might have to move)😂. If anyone could give me some info that would be great thanks a lot !

Pure curiosity, is it possible to make a Rogue Sorcerer- :>
Absolutely!
I like rogue x, sorcerer 2
If you’re new i wouldn’t recommend multiclassing tho
This is 2024 rules btw
I am new but alr got a hold of it, just trying out for later, since for now i just made a Rogue Sage
Sorcerer with criminal background works fine. Or even without the background, just in backstory.
aight, ty ty
Hello! I am VERY new, only played once before on Roll20 like 3-4 years ago. I am about to hop into a campaign with some friends but am also wanting to make some more friends and go onto another campaign as well! Like i said, very new to the game so i do ask lots of questions (my partner who has played too also help me understand stuff lol) If anyone has any info thatd be great!
i feel like DnD is best to learn as u go IMO
thats what i’ve been told by my partner. “Dont think abt it too much other than maybe your character and ask questions as you go.”
In terms of going into a campaign I'd suggest looking at the #find-a-game channels.
If you haven't already I would also suggest ready the free rules on DnDbeyond, specifically the playing the game chapter.
The less rules i know the more i can do muahahahha
thats so real lmao
i got a trident as a second weapon just to throw it at some point
the dm of my 2nd ever game thats coming up told the group we have one bag of holding for all of us and me and two others said i should hold it because im a druid so i could just put a shit ton of animals in it, then in battle just unleash a zoo
LOL
Do you play IRL or online?
Also new to DnD, have played RPs before but not in dnd style with stats and dice rolls. So I was mainly looking to get my hands on some stats tables. Tried reading player's handbook but that's just too much work xD
There’s 10 minutes of air to split equally inside a bay of holding so the animals will all be dead by the time u go about a football field

People forget they play DnD with a DM
They will tell u if u can't do something basically and for the rest u can try anything u could try IRL
And they’d have to be tiny to get more than one in there and even that one would have to be very small
As someone who is playing his first game sometime soon it seems very intimdating but in a weird way it's simple
Cause theres so little limitation
I play online
I think i prefer online big time
On discord or something? I tried exploring DnDBeyond but couldn't get the hang of it
But thats personal and mostly due to aphantasia
In person is amazing but SOOO difficult to maintain schedules so it becomes disheartening many times
so when i played the first time i used roll20, it was a few years ago and that was my first time playing but it was pretty simple
It's just way easier online since i can have visual references and stuff
Voice portion is usually done on something like discord or zoom
for the campaign im a part of coming up we are using dnd beyond
Amen, I tried that with a made up table top and only managed 3 sessions top
Oh it definitely is amazing too
Like i have aphantasia so i can't visualise anything which makes it extra difficult IRL
DND beyond is great for character sheets and maps. Roll20 is also great
Got ya. Makes sense for ya then
I see. Cool ... I need to explore that more. I usually get confused and overwhelmed when there are so many options
yeah, i understand that. dnd beyond was very helpful for me when it came to making my character, but i havent done much else from there. Roll20 has good visuals and decent stuff for character making.
its (dnd beyond) gives lots of good descriptions and such but i think the one think i dont like abt it is the order in which its set up to make selections for your character
Hi
Hey Claudia 👋
I generally prefer to print out character sheets and just do them on paper. Doing stuff online is generally a pain for me, I'm hopeless with tech
Howdy!
I hear you, trying to navigate tech is a pain but I like virtual sheets for edit-ability... Printed sheets are hard to keep on changing stats
The day just started. Not a fan of which guild (office) I'm forced to report to 😔
The DnD beyond sheet is interactable which i like
I don't like having to pay for online things. if I'm going to have to pay for subclasses I'd much rather have a physical copy
That and all the resources there are in dnd beyond is the only thing that kept me hooked to it
Amen
I think most of the options in dnd beyond is free, most ... I haven't explored it that much though
The nice thing though is that if you join some campaigns that you know people are in or have friends in, you can actually share PHBs and content that you don't own yourself.
That is not a problem for a first time player
Hell i could have picked a freakin bird if i wanted too
And if I remember correctly, if you make a character within one book of content, then move your character out to another area, that stuff stays there, even if it's unaccessible in the new campaign or campaignless status.
it stays there, but you can't advance it or get certain details.
So if you want to have a character based on Grim Hallow content, for example, then move that character into a campaign with no Grim Hallow stuff, it stays in your profile. Just, as Flat stated, you can't get more stuff added on from Grim Hallow.
i'm on the side of physical. or at least digital that i have control over backing up, and is in a format where i can print to make it physical.
What is stronger as a solo a wizard or a sorcerer?
Are you wanting to have more actual usage with spells, or just dump out damage and effects?
dndbeyond is primarily a character manager and now connected to a VTT. that is it's niche. i just dont really use it aside from unlocking free content.
In a solo campaign? Power level doesn't really matter for a solo campaign, since your DM will be balancing the encounters around you.
Wizards gives you far more versatility and game play options, meanwhile sorcerers really are the "stick to 1 playstyle and run with it"
No it’s more like my party members are dumb and I wanna be able to do something solo as per my character personality and design
You can't really play the game solo in a normal campaign. I'm not really sure what you're looking for here.
cleric? have access to your entire class' spell list and swap what you might need at the start of each day.
plus you can wear armour and also have higher HP than a wizard
You haven’t made character yet but you’ve determined your party is dumb?
How’d we get here?
To be clear, in DnD it's considered very bad etiquette to say something along the lines of
"I'm going to just wander off and try to do a dungeon or a quest on my own, separate from the party."
Any DM worth their salt will respond with "No", and then probably have a conversation with you after the game.
So far I've only done this once with my sorcerer but it was a mixture of in-story character development + strategy. My sorcerer is really the main magic damage dealer in our party and the group was trying to solve this puzzle in a time crunch that required all of their abilities that I didn't have. So while they did their thing, I ventured off to solo a wave of enemies trying to stop them on the outside of the room, basically playing defense.
Yes. D&D is a team game-there is a social contract.
I’d still call this team play. Working on different tasks but still serving the team.
It sounds like all part of the same encounter, yeah.
Also with the in-story development, my party has been witholding important information from my kobold because they don't trust the deity he worships (bad history with followers of them). So out of frustration, he told the Paladin to stay with the group to help with the puzzle and he did his own thing, out of spite.
The issue for me is, imagine hearing about stuff like the Twilight Cleric, Chronurgy Wizard, Undead Warlock etc and finding out those are paywalled
Certainly not a roleplay interaction I'd recommend to newcomers here in the #dnd-newcomers channel.
Fair. I'm just giving a bit more context. Definitely not something that I think would be an action newcomers should do. Although such behavior should really stem from enough build up of character and plot development when done right. I also agree that there's an important factor of social interactions and teamwork with the players themselves, and how they perceive your actions.
My newcomer advice is make something simple, stick with the group, and be an observer for a while, meantime learn the rules.
Once you have that underneath you then you can get more complex with it (but barbarian is still the most fun to be had).
There's a balance with in-character justification and how your actual out-of-character players perceive those actions, which will depend on how everyone feels about each other.
hi, me and some friends want to setup dnd session that we can play through Discord, what tools can we use to hp with this, charater creationa dn point tracking map making, stuff like this
It’s in me and my friends campaign
Still if you haven’t got faith in the party-to the extent that you’re already trying to play the game solo… just go play Skyrim. That’s a solo fantasy adventure.
Alright then what’s stronger a wizard or sorcerer?
Neither are intrinsically stronger. Wizards have more utility, and Sorcerers have more potent spells.
Helloo!
Depends on your DM.
A wizard has the capacity for more magic.
A sorcerer casts more powerful magic.
If DM is giving out scrolls for the wizard to learn and add then the wizard gets pretty good. If not I’d personally prefer the sorcerer.
Another consideration is SRC casts with CHR. WIZ cast with INT.
What do you want your skills to be. You want o be the rockstar or the scholar?
To be fair, a sorcerer with a Scroll Case full of utility spells they don't have prepared but that are on the Sorcerer Spell list gets basically all the benefit of sorcerer with closer to the range of Wizard
Spell Scrolls and Spell components are basically what spellcasters are expected to burn money on while the martials are buying Full Plate and whatnot
That works too for sure. I’m always making my characters flavor first then mechanics.
So if I want the rockstar I’ll play sorcerer and if I want a scholar type I’ll go Wizard.
I'm very confused.. :/
I've read a few things such as a few the D&D Beyond Basic Rules but I didnt understand it that well and I've also watched some youtube tutorial thingy but I'm still very lost..
I have no idea what to do nor do I know how to actually find a game/campaign?
All I have is just a rough understanding of the absolute basics T~T

ok thanks
To find a game, you've gotta reach out to other people who want to play. You can use our #find-a-game channel to get your search started here on this server.
what is the best software to use when considering popularity, player freindlyness and overall quality
I assume you're asking about Virtual Table Top programs (VTT)? That depends on your group. Ultimately, your DM will be the one deciding which one to use, though.
DnD is played primarily in the imagination, after all. Programs online just help with visualization. They aren't even strictly necessary, though they can certainly be useful.
ok thanks you i was stressing as most videos i have glanced at used programs such as foundry. In such a case do i only need to create my character, learn the rules then just join (find) a game.
Yup, you've got it
really appreciate the help
Let us know if you have any other questions!
roll20 and dnd beyond tend to be more commonly used and both are preloaded with the basic rules so you can make a character on there if you like. If you use standard array, most DMs will be fine with that, though you might need to change some things to fit the setting
First time trying to be a cleric, how does the divinity choice work?
I don't recognize that term. Can you be a little more specific?
Doesn’t every cleric have a religion with a god in it? How do I choose that?
Clerics don't have to be dedicated to one specific God, but if you're looking for a god in particular for your cleric to worship, I'd recommend asking your DM. There's a chance they're running a setting with a specific set of deities or a setting with entirely made up deities.
In the meantime, it can be sufficient to write something generic like "God of nature" or something like that.
Oh aight, thought it was a set thing like races and classes but that makes stuff a but easier, thanks
There are several official DnD settings, and each one of them has their own individual pantheons. If you're looking for inspiration, you can search those up. But there's no list to cost from while building your character.
Asked the DM, he said the main DnD gods so I’ll just pick from them

thats what ive been doing, i have joined 3 groups, but the game never started as the host was MIA. unfortunately. just need to keep on looking i guess.
Indeed. Scheduling and getting a group going are the hardest part of DnD.
i am starting to see that lol. it's a bit frustrating. oh well, i'm sure it will happen soon enough lol

Hi im a little confused if im looking for people to play with what should i go into?
Type /looking-for-dm and make a post by filling out the form that pops up
And look around in #looking-for-players
Assuming you wanna be a player
yes i do! im a little new to this so im trying to get the ropes of things here
Reasonable
I didnt quite understand how making a character works?
How does one choose stats?
What does the other "weird" classes and spiecies do? Like.. Whats Humblewood or "Spelljammer: Adventures in Space"????
Plasmoids seem sick and so does Corvums?
IM SO CONFUSED?!
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
So that’s how we do stats
Humblewood and Spelljammer are settings
And also locked behind you needing to purchase the books
I recommend you read through this if you haven’t already
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
- As Nugget mentions above, you generate your stats using one of the above three methods. We recommend Standard Array to new players.
- I need a little more specificity on this one.
- Those are individual content books. Humblewood in particular is a fan made content package, and isn't official.
- Plasmoids are cool!
- We'll be happy to answer any specific questions.
Plasmoids do be cool
Thanks!
But one more question; do you need the Player's Handbook or is it just heavily recomended?
I wouldn't even recommend it at all for a very new player. The free Basic Rules have all the necessary information to play.
The PHB is the core of the game, and mainly what you get in it not in the free rules are more options for character-building: class specializations, spells, and the like.
Can someone meet me and try and teach me how to be a dm please
In the event that someone doesn't offer to teach, I would recommend the Quickstart Guide to Game Mastering, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video. Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series for extra credit. (You don't need to watch all 100+ videos!)
can someone explain what the community and game difference is ?
Community posts are for servers with multiple DMs and parties. They might be entirely separate or they may take place in a living world where the actions of one group affect everyone else.
ohhh that makes sense thank you
I want to get into dnd. Should I learn to become a player or a dm? How would I go about learning either of them?

Hey, I need you guys’s help. I’m looking for a D&D book of an adventure, but I can’t figure out what it is. It’s an adventure that takes place in Parnast and it’s based on a video on YouTube by a YouTube creator called puffin Forest. He did a video titled the hero of Parnast were it shoehorns the players into taking a npc called Wallace with them and I’m trying to figure out what that book is cause. I think it’d be hilarious to run that D&D adventure with other people. Could you please help me find out what the name is so I could get it for myself please also there was a second video he did as well. That was the hero of parnast part two where he also had a video that was about somebody trying to frame Wallace and I would love to have that adventure as well. It also took place in parnast
This might very well be a non-official pre-written adventure, whether published by a third party company or by a random person.
I'm not 100% sure if the names match, but that sounds somewhat like the tier 1 adventures for season 5 of Adventurer's League. DDAL05-##s. They took place in Parnast and there is at least one mystery/sabotage focused adventure
Our resident Queen of Squirrels is dead on. It's "Uninivted Guests" (DDAL05-03) in part 1. It's on DMsGuild (https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/193202/ddal05-03-uninvited-guests-5e). Part 2 is "Bad Business in Parnast."
So if I got the storm Kings thunder book would it be included ?
I couldn't say, sorry. I don't have the book.
Ok I looked it says it’s part of the storm kings thunder series so that means the book ?
Hey, @main fulcrum, AL adventures aren't taken directly from their hardcover adventures, right? They're separate?
hypothetically, if I wanted to say do the storm king thunder book could I hypothetically start the adventures off in parnast with one of said adventures in parnast and go from there or should I follow the book
Yep, separate but related
So season 5 has a lot of stuff about giants, but is different than the actual book
They also aren't included in SKT. You would have to purchase the season 5 adventures off DMsGuild.
Though there's usually at least a bundle for older seasons
Thank you! Obviously showing my AL ignorance here. Appreciate you clearing that up.
Why can’t I just get a book for said adventure?
I don't think I understand the question. You can just buy that specific adventure if you want it. iamrazorwing linked it above.
But the AL adventures are sold as PDFs, there is no book
And I don't believe anyone has put out a guide for running them alongside SKT. You'd have to decide when and how things would best fit together.
Hey, im new to dnd and I wondered if i could get some help picking a class and subclass
I want to play a dark/necromantic character and I'm considering either a necromancer wizard or oathbreaker paladin.
In a current campaign I’m in I’m a drow. That might be one to look into
Hi I am brand new and don’t really know where I should start

Check out #learn-to-play and the first two sections of the rules linked above. Make a practice character if you like. That's probably enough for a start!
I want to play a summoner type but everything I see seems to indicate that wizard is the best for that. As the paladin can't summon much. One thing I want to note is that we allow planeshift content and I want to play as a vampire which would give me an attack that's 1d6+1 pierce that gives me a zombie summon if it kills. The issue is that that is a melee attack, which I feel could maybe make the paladin work? Thing is that it's low damage and doesn't scale. I prefer something heavier but if the necromancer is my best bet I'll go with that.
Summoner types are fun but yk Magumi from jjk? It comes with the same drawbacks as a paladin has
Summoning isn't so much a thing in D&D as compared to, say, video games. A necromancer wizrard will give you some of that aspect, whereas a paladin won't. Plus, it varies whether oathbreaker is allowed for PCs depending on the table.
Our group is very open when it comes to how you want to pick your class. Is that true? I keep reading about summoning a lot of skeletons whenever I Google anything. The issue is that none of what I read sounds introductory
Not sure what you mean
#character-discussion will be able to give you more of the details for a given build (and not generally not prone to the misinformation you find from random Googling).
I see, could I copy paste my initial message there?
Go for it.
How do I go about finding a game

Hey guys, i made this thing for a technique im doing called Projection Sorcery and i just need some feedback, can i post it here?
Should i just post it there?
Please check #channel-guide to find the most appropriate channel for a topic
Yes you can post it there using an appropriate sharing method (link to D&DBeyond homebrew creation or use a reputable file sharing service and share a link that way)
Hey new to D&D I’m a Level 5 Rouge Halfling called Caspian and would love to meet people to play with over discord

is 8x11 squares on a battle map grid too small? if sp how many sqaures should i aim for?
Depends entirely on the map, really. Nice for a larger room where the fight takes place in a more enclosed area, but pretty small overall, most creatures can't even dash full distance in either side to side 😛
But this is likely less a newcomer question, and you might get better answers at #dm-discussion
okie dokie ill ask there
Hello I wanna play
Hi, i'm creating a oneshot for newcomers to dnd and i want to premade some character sheet, do you have any advice about wich combo of race and class i should do?
Depends on how many players you anticipate.
You could always start with the premade characters on D&DBeyond. Many of the combos you see there are there because they're classics. Dwarf Cleric, Orcish/Half-Orc Barbarian, Halfling Rogue, etc.
i am trying to buy pugilist but it keeps giving me an error is anyone else having this issue.?
#ddb-support could likely help!
are there any dm's that are making a campiegn im a new player and looking for a campaign to join
I don’t know if I post this here but I’m looking for a DM and one other person as bot me and my friend want to get into D&D however we are both new we would want a gam we can take casual fun and semi serious but we are new so a good DM would help
This would not be today just something to plan for a do l and get started on when available
You'll wanna post in #looking-for-dm. Follow the directions for doing so in #find-a-game!
Cool thanks
Hey is there any server where people play D&D over text messages?
I really want to play with people but I don't wanna do it in VC
look for pbp or play by post
Oh
Where should I look?
Sorry 💔
I have no idea
Also thanks for replying
read up in #find-a-game and it should tell you how to search and post in the looking for channels on here
Thank You very much senior
then you can use the search in the top right to search for "play by post"
You can search #looking-for-players to see if anyone is running a text-based or PBP game, but I would expand your search to look at other avenues as well.
Check out the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search “PBP” or “play by post” as keywords using Discord's Discover function!
Thanks 🙏🙏
Knowing the "Play By Post" Will help me locate ideal server/group easily.
Thank You Very Much Seniors!
I hope you have a nice adventure
Good luck! Hope you find a table that's right for you.
(Hi I'm new)
If you need/want to learn how to play, read the information in #learn-to-play and 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.
If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.
generally speaking, does being proficient in cooking require being proficient in Cook's Utensils? Or is there some other nuance there?
and secondly, why might someone want to take that skill? Is it possible for my character to be just sort of a good cook without that proficiency?
Yes, the mechanical benefit of adding your proficiency to cooked stuff requires cook's utensil proficiency
Its largely flavor but it can come up. E.g. youre cooking a meal in order to persuade/bribe someone, the dm might allow the proficiency to apply there
You probably could be a good cook without the proficiency yeh, just dont get the mechanical benefit

The post above me has some helpful information to get u started
I just made my character idk if she's actually viable or if she breaks any rules-
What do you have?
uhh a Fighter? I kinda pulled her outta one of my written stories
Hello!
I'm new to DND. I just recently got myself a Starter Kit and an Adverturer Dice Kit
And you picked a species and background?
yeah?
Which are?
but I uhhh mostly made some of them up?
She's a Human and idk much about background
I know nothing ;-;
Here are your options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
what if I didn't pick any?
But thou must. A character is made of a class, species and background.
A hint: pick one that gives you the features that sound best, rather than saying "oh a fighter must have the soldier background."
does the background have to be relevant to her lore? cause... idk what fits best for a young Hunter
I went with soldier in the end
Alright! Each of your parts will give you some choices, like skill proficiencies and equipment.
For ability scores (before your background is applied) I recommend the Standard Array method.
Greetings!
?tag new fighter
Fighter
Master all weapons and armor
Fighters rule many battlefields. Questing knights, royal champions, elite soldiers, and hardened mercenaries—as Fighters, they all share an unparalleled prowess with weapons and armor. And they are well acquainted with death, both meting it out and defying it.
-# Suggested Standard Array assignment
Str. 15
Dex. 14
Con. 13
Int. 8
Wis. 10
Cha. 12
Likes: Weapons
Complexity: Low
Starting HP: 10 + Con. modifier
I went with different stats for mine as I took her lore into consideration
G'day.
That is totally fine! As long as you have at least 14 in either Strength or Dexterity, and 10 in Constitution, you've got a start.
I put 14 in Dexterity and 15 in Constitution. I gave her high Con because I wrote in her lore that she comes from a village of Hunters so she's had experience of living out in the wilderness and the elements.
When you apply the improvements from your background to your ability scores, try to focus on ending with even numbers. That's where the bonuses tick up.
Excellent, Fighter is rather flexible in builds and 14 dex 15 con is very nice
when it came to her equipment I uhh took the liberty to make my own starting kit (is that how it works?)
Usually not, though some DM’s will allow it if they look over it and approve
Class and background offer sets of gear you can just have, or the option to have an amount of gold to buy what you want.
You usually have either starting gold to buy things or starting equipment
ahh ok
I just saw on the dndbeyond site that I could add stuff on my own so I assumed
This list has the available equipment for starting characters: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment
As long as its within your starting income
Don't be that player who gives themselves an anti material rifle at level 1
I didn't
Exaggerated but you get the idea
so by starting income what does that mean?
You can choose your lifestyle during character creation, like whether you're broke or nobility rich
This determines your final starting gold in which you can buy stuff with
I put mine at Modest
Fighter:
Choose A, B, or C: (A) Chain Mail, Greatsword, Flail, 8 Javelins, Dungeoneer’s Pack, and 4 GP; (B) Studded Leather Armor, Scimitar, Shortsword, Longbow, 20 Arrows, Quiver, Dungeoneer’s Pack, and 11 GP; or
(C) 155 GP
Additionally you can also sell your starting equipment for full price and trade for something different
You don't have to start with a greatsword, sell it and grab a rapier
is it fine I say what I gave myself on her sheet?
(Lifestyle does not affect starting cash in either version, far as I know)
Sure. A weapon with the finesse property would fit if you're going with Dexterity, as would a ranged weapon. You'll also want armour.
Is dndbeyond lying to me again
Backpack, Hunting trap x3 (to her story she's from a hunting village), Leatherworker's tools (she was taught how to process hide), Climber's kit(she came from a mountainous area) padded armor, Quiver (just in case), and a Spear
Flavoring is free for the record you don't have to force certain starting equipment just to fit your lore
What's your strength at
12
Oh yeah wouldn't start with a spear
If you've got ten gold to spare, grab an Explorer’s Kit too.
Rapier + shield or two shortswords are your only choices for melee for the most part
Since those scale off your excellent dexterity
Shortsword dagger, scimitars, shortsword scimitar, shortsword whip, there are options
Better and worse options is something else entirely
there's some leeway with starting equipment, especially if you speak with your GM. like, if a character literally started as a travelling merchant they might have a small cart with a whole bunch of mundane stuff and an extra quantity of gold. that doesn't necessarily mean any of that will be useful, or long term. generally if it makes sense and isn't game breaking or unfair a GM could let it slide.
I could just change her to have more strength
my character isn't some seasoned veteran or anything
just an optimistic kid who wants to explore the world (i know it sounds cliche she's a VERY old Oc)
i'd suggest not literally having this be your old OC, but instead heavily inspired by your old OC. like a multiversal variant. that way your OC doesn't get changed, this is just a different version in your GM's world.
and as such your OC variant would be just starting out. as for the variety of tool kits, imagine what the character would literally have on them. they wouldn't necessarily carry them everywhere, unless that was logical to the character. and lots of characters start with proficiencies in tools they don't currently have on them.
a lot of people get seriously attached to an OC and then get in a funk when they have to change something to accommodate an adventure, or when the OC gets hurt or dies. keeping this multiversal variant thing in mind often does help a whole bunch with that. the OC is safe, elsewhere and unchanged.
Uh not sure where to ask but I’m still so confused about how to find an online campaign 😭
I’m trying to make a character in dnd beyond and I’m playing a ranger. Since ranger has hunters mark as an already prepared spell do I have to add it in the prepared spells separately or is it 2 different spells
Two different spells, you don't have to do anything about it and it'll appear
Ahhh okay thank you very much
If you’re looking for one that’s already happening, look in #looking-for-players
It’s where DM’s send requests for players to join adventures
Hi! I got interested into dnd recently but have absolutely no idea of where to start from. I'm an absolute newbie, any advice on how to get started?
