I'd back DOSH up. Wizard is among the most complicated classes. While it may not have many features, it requires a lot of knowledge of spellcasting, both in its granular details and the breadth of spells. But yeah, different folks and all.
so how complicated is sorcerer because it has a ton of spells and metamagic and stuff
Sorcerer has less spells at any given time than Wizard, and you'll only have two Metamagic options to start with (and not even until level 2!).
Metamagic is usually pretty simple, too. For example, one is
spend points to change the damage type of this spell.
Not very complicated at all! It just changes one of your spells slightly, and since you're a Sorcerer, you only have a few bread-and-butter spells.
alright well thank you!!
also i just joined a new campaign and i think it would be extremely beneficial to have a cleric but i really wanna try sorcerer so
👌 thx
like for this specific one
If you or one of your group has access to the book Xanathar's Guide to Everything, then you might want to consider the Divine Soul subclass, which gains access to Cleric spells.
But maybe I'm getting too far ahead here
I think it's good to check with the table. If the DM builds the game independent of the players, healing may be necessary, and if you could find fun playing a cleric, cool. But if it's something you really don't wanna do, don't let the group pressure you. Open and honest communication is how to nip problems in the bud.
oh nobody aside from myself is pressuring me
-# And Cleric isn't the only class that can heal! Nor is it a class that must heal!
Then go with your gut (pending table approval)!
2024 rules?
It's still compatible with the current ruleset, yes
It's an older book, but it works using the conversion rules just fine
@timid locust
oh also, which Paladin fighting style would be good?
So, one of the debates of complexity comes from the way the two classes prepare their spells. Sorcerers choose their spells when they level up, and are then stuck with those spells until the next time they level up. Wizards get a much larger amount of spells because they go into a spellbook, and you get to prepare a certain number of spells from that spellbook to use each day.
Wizards are often thought of as being more complex because you need to choose what spells to use every time you finish a long rest, and the game mechanics of the spellbook can be complicated to understand at first. But the up side is its more forgiving if you make a mistake or change your mind, because you can change your spells again every day.
Sorcerers on the other had are sort of "one and done" with their spell decisions. So while there is much less for you to manage, it also means its easier to make a mistake and get stuck with it for a long time. If a sorcerer chooses to learn fireball, and then the plot of the campaign ends up being that you go to hell and all the devils are resistant to fire damage, you won't be able to swap out fire ball until you level up.
So between the two of them, its a trade off between complexity in decision making, and forgiveness in the impact of those decisions
When in doubt, Defense!
Not getting hit doesn't just mean you stay alive, it means you can keep your big spells still active safely!
👌 thx
oh that is true, didnt thought about that 😅
I've made my first custom miniature on heroforge, kinda confused on what material is best for order? And it looks very costly too, any tips??
Maybe #dnd-minis has some insight?
Ah okay yeah I'll look there lol
Are you aware that miniatures are completely optional? I'm sure #dnd-minis has advice for you if you do want to go forward with it, but if your main concern is cost I just want to make sure that you aren't assuming this is a mandatory part of the game. Even if you are playing in person with a physical battle map, there are alternative options. I actually used a chess piece as my mini for the first year that I played the game
Yeah I know it’s optional, but I really love the character I made. which is why I’m inquiring here.
No worries! Just wanted to make sure you didn’t feel priced out of the game itself
Fully custom minis from Hero Forge are also considerably more expensive than buying a generic mini and painting it yourself, for example. Before hero forge existed, it was common to buy premade minis that were just a given combination of species and class like “Human Fighter” or “Elf Rogue” or whatever
Yeah prolly gonna do that xD or just be brave and get it cuz it's the character i wanna play the most.
Do DMs allow you to make your own spells as long as it’s in sort of the realm of lore and is a playable not OP spell
That varies a ton. Some are open to homebrew; plenty aren't.
Usually the safe answer is no. You might find a DM who is willing, but it's not something you should expect to have access to.
Might be worth taking a look at the spells that do exist and seeing if there's one that's close enough to what you want. You might be surprised!
I saw some ones that make sense it’s sort of just the lore of my character his powers went dormant after he cried and his tears made the whole village flood, so his level 9 spell would end up being something similar like heavy bludgeoning rain
Take a look at the spells Sleet Storm, Ice Storm, or the really late game Storm of Vengeance. Plenty of stuff to plan around getting access to later.
Unfortunately, characters in DnD start off pretty weak. It'll be a while before anyone gets big, dangerous spells that could destroy a village.
Yeah don’t worry I got that so I sort of made his lore like his grief made him stop using magic and he just forgot how to ever do it and the campaign is about him regaining his abilities slowly
Don’t be afraid to reflavor things as well. A 9th level spell that currently exists is called “Meteor Swarm” which involves calling down meteors from the sky to bludgeon the target. Rather than making your own spell, you could just cast this, and describe the visual effect as being giant tear drops instead of stones
That’s sick I’m gonna look at it
Tsunami also works as an 8th level spell c:
I have never played wizard before. How important is charisma to an illusionist wizard?
It's not mechanically important to the class at all. It could still be useful for social encounters as normal, but not any more than it might for a Fighter or a Ranger, for example.
Hi guys! Anyone has experience with low magic dnd? How did do you like it?
Can't say that I have, no. It's a tough sell when over half of the classes and over 80% of the subclasses involve magic of some sort.
If you're looking for more opinions, you might have better luck in #dnd-discussion .
Yes I get it, every class starts casting things sooner or later. But I’m a fan of darker fantasy with less magic so I was hoping to find a game like that. Or at least get some feedback from people who actually tried it:) Thanks!
Is dnd hard to understand as a new player
It does take some time and effort to learn, yes. It's not really a pick-up-and-play game. But on the bright side, there's plenty of resources for getting started!
Should I play balders gate to understand the dnd universe
It's certainly not necessary, but it might be a fun DnD adjacent experience. If you do end up playing BG3, just remember that it's not a super reliable example of how DnD is actually played at the table. It's meant to be a video game, after all.
Please don’t randomly ping folks
Me and @grim venture wanna start playing soon any recommendations

It has some solid lore, but some of the mechanics were changed considerably for video game reasons
Thanks for your help
Balder's Gate 3 is a very fun game, and it has inspired many people to try D&D for the first time, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a means of getting started or learning the ropes. Larian Studios made a significant amount of changes to the rules and flow of the game in order to make it fit better as a video game instead of a table top game. Not to mention, BG3 takes about 100 hours to complete, so I definitely don't want that to be a barrier to entry for playing the actual game
Wow you guys are really helping thanks
Do dungeon masters often let new players play or is that a pain to do?
Question, I know hit dice are recovered during long rests, but only half. If I'm level 9, do I recover 4 or 5 die?
Many games are newcomer friendly, even if they don't directly advertise themselves as such. So it never hurts to ask. But as a newcomer, your options will be more limited than an experienced player. Mainly, this is because experienced players often like to start their campaigns at higher levels. If you are new to D&D, I highly recommend that you join a campaign that starts at level 1, or at as low of a level as possible. This way, the low levels can act a tutorial of sorts, and the complexity can ramp up slowly as you get more comfortable with your abilities
On that note, do I only recover half of my spent die or half my total die?
Typically how long do the campaigns last
Or does it just vary on who own the whole thing
In D&D, the rule is you always round down, unless a specific rule or feature says otherwise in its description. However its worth pointing out, the rule you are referring to actually got changed in the 2024 core rules update. The current rules for a long rest say that you recover all of your hit dice
It is entirely dependent on your group and how long you all want it to last. It can be anywhere from a single session to multiple years.
Got it. Thank you for clarifying!
Years wow.
The campaign that I am currently DMing is coming up on its 2 year anniversary in just a month or two
Mines been going on for…3 months in three days
2 years wow , are you close to it finishing?
Nope!
Awesome
My current DM told us that he went through a 5 year campaign. Get's pretty crazy
Wow.
Hi guys I’m new to dnd I got into through stranger things and my grandparents and I was wondering if anyone could help me with any of the basics or how I could get started in it?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Thanks I’ll read through it now.
How to make a looking for dungeon master post?
The full instructions for how to do so are in the #find-a-game channel. Just scroll to the top and read through everything posted there. But the TLDR is that you need to use the server bot to fill out a form, and then a post will be created for you based on your answers in the form
If I were looking through the ads, I would want to see something about a player's experience (if any), their preferences (in the game and even more broadly, like what kind of fantasy stories they enjoy), and their general approach to teamwork and problem-solving.
Few questions for multi-classing:
- Is it limited to 2 classes?
- I understand the minimum requirement of
13on the class main stat, but does it include item modifier stats? Feats modifier stats? Or just starter stats?
- You are not limited to 2 classes, though its typically a bad idea to do 3 or more
- Temporary bonuses are not included, but permanent ones are. Magic items are considered to be temporary, and feats are considered to be permanent
- No
- Feats and start stats, but not item I believe
Thanks!
Thanks 🙂

We have too many folks joining each day to teach one-on-one. The opening two parts of the rules linked above ("Playing the Game" and "Character Creation") and #learn-to-play are good to check out first!
but just as a piece of advice, I would highly recommend that you avoid multiclassing as a newcomer. Each of the classes are designed to grow in power over time at roughly the same rate, and multiclassing is one of the only ways to change that rate. Sometimes it can make your character stronger, but it can also make your character weaker. You should only multiclass if you know what you are doing and go into it with a specific plan for how to handle it
Advice taken haha as a Wizard, I really want to experience the pinnacle of magic before going crazy at other stuff

hi I'm really new to D&D and i was wondering if anyone knew any cool resources or tips for writing your first campaign because its scary
Excuse me sirs can someone explain to me how to use roll20 I want to play with my friend who's in a different country we don't have a dm
Write in pencil
Expect the unexpected from your victims(party)
Dont be afraid to fudge your rolls or theirs
Try not to forget about inspirations
Start with a small area and build it in the direction your party explores
I would not suggest fudging player rolls
Me neither
Try asking in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building for some good advice!
Fudging even your own rolls as DM is a double-edged sword. It's something to be careful about since you can easily discard narrative & mechanical tension, especially if your players know/discover you fudge rolls.
This place is generally where new players arrive - it's for newcomers of all kinds but for DM advice you might get more hits in #dm-discussion
That being said. Never forget the gold standard for DM advice is in the dungeon masters guide. Every YouTuber, every person on here will give you their own two cents and 95% of it is stuff from the DMG disguised in their own package. (And when it's not from the DMG it's usually not very good)
So don't sleep on the DMG! If you have it it's possibly your best resource!
Assuming you've read and are referencing the DMG already, I can't recommend mystic arts on YouTube enough... If you love D&D as it is an aren't trying to change it to something else, Mystic Arts embraces modern D&D and gives refreshingly consistent and good DM advice
Also if you have a DMG you specifically want the creating campaigns chapter... But I'd strongly recommend having read all of creating adventures first.
How would one even fudge another players roll
Possibly fudging DCs but sometimes that's not the best advice, I fudge the dice rolls almost never and in experienced games I roll in the open
If the dice are fake then it's not a game
Small area and building out is extremely good advice. But bonus advice, make sure the players start in the small area, don't send them there curse of strahd style
Is a critical hit rolling a 20? Like is that the only thing considered critical [to proc critical hit effects?]
A natural 20 triggers a critical hit (unless some feature triggers it on a different die roll)
There are magical items or subclass effects that reduce the crit die requirement, so you can get a crit on a nat 19 for example
or an 18 with champion fighter c:
These effects all stack with themselves too, so you can get crits as low as nat 13s for example
Most of the crit effects I'm aware of give you a specific die change, they don't just reduce the number
If two different things say you crit on a 19 or 20, they don't add together to become a lower number

Is this server for the online game only ?
This server is the official D&D Discord server run by Wizards of the Coast, makers of D&D, a TTRPG game
Not for the MMO
Honestly I have no clue. Im just interested in learning the game and give it a shot online

js wondering if someone can explain me rq in dms how to fight i js buy the starter pack and kinda hard how to attack with the character i choose dont really know how to start and we like to find a group to play with it too
When you're making an attack roll, you roll a D20 (20 sided dice) and add your strength modifer and proficiency bonus assuming you're using a melee weapon and are proficient with it.
If it meets or beats the target's armor class (AC), you hit
Then you roll the damage dice for that weapon and add your strength modifier for melee weapons.
If you're using a ranged weapon, you'd use your dexterity modifier instead of strength

Hey guys I need help in PM on how to make my character sheet, I downloaded the one in dnd beyond and already have my class, race and stats but I need help with the rest
So I'm starting a DnD campaign in a few weeks. I have 6 players and I'm wondering if having an encounter in the first session if it would be too much to have 4 Animated Armors?
I'm new to being a DM so I don't want to overwhelm them.
Depends entirely on the party level, but 6 players have the benefit of numbers
Also, #dm-discussion might be able to help better
Thank you.
hello
Hi~
ah but I they are asking for character sheets and I dont know how to make those
oh, um go to dndyond.com, there should be a 2014 basic rules for free, or the 2024 version too
ok
Some direct links:
Basic Rules (2014): https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Character Sheet (2014): https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/5E_CharacterSheet_Fillable.pdf
Basic Rules (2024): https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
Character Sheet (2024): https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
Does anybody have a good, free Dnd Character sheet Site or app? I’ve been using the online pdf version for the 2024 one, but I keep on having to redo it every session because I can’t edit it without paying for Microsoft word and some stuff.
I tried using the beyond one and roll 20, but I already payed $120 for the PH and MM and rather not buy digital versions and spend more money for info that is literally right at my fingertips
You can edit the fillable sheet (linked above) on any browser, like Firefox and Brave
Yeah, but the info doesn’t save unless you do it manually, and then I can’t edit the pdf.
Unless I’m doing something wrong
There should be an option to save it with changes.
Yeah, you should be able to download the sheet again with your edits as long as it's fillable
You shouldn't need edit permissions to complete a fillable PDF and it should remain fillable
How? Is it the same on different computers? I have a one running in Microsoft Edge.
Might be different between browsers
It definitely works for me on the Brave and Firefox browsers - I just tried it on both.
All changes are saved once you "download" the file. You can then reopen the downloaded file to resume editing.
That’s probably it. I need to pay for some Microsoft bull to edit my pdf.
That seems ... strange. PDFs are one of the formats most universally supported. I'd try downloading one of the two browsers I mentioned if nothing else works.
Hey everyone, I'm new to DnD, I've been fascinated by it for a long time and it seems as though the tism has taking control and I'm fully engulfed in this new hobby. I'm working on a Home-brew species that combines the Drow with the Rock Gnome, and a few different campaigns. With that being said I'd like to learn about being a better DM that the books cant tell me and maybe get some help with some character concepts I have and how a new player can make these dreams a DnD reality. 😁 thanks for letting me be apart of this community 🤩
Welcome! The basic rules have quite a lot of good DM guidance here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
Yeah, it doesn’t work on chrome either. On Edge it says to “edit with Acrobat” but nothing on chrome. I’m going to try downloading Firefox and brace to see if it works
haiii haiii hello everynones!!
hii
Heyyy, i am totally new to dnd and really most things about the game but It really interests me since ive played over 800 hours of baldurs gate 3 which I know is completely different but I was just wondering how would be able to start learning and eventually playing

Welcome!
Yo im trying to host a dnd session with my friends so what are the basics i would need to know to do that ?
I'd go over the DM basics here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics#ThingsYouNeed
On a spells components what does V,S,M mean??
Verbal, Somatic, Material, the three kinds of spell components
You can see a more detailed explanation of each here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells#Components
Thanks so much!
Hi, I have a few friends on Discord and none of us have played D&D but are interested in trying.
Is there a recommended route to take to learn? Is that an AI tool which can play game master (with voice) and can guide our first game?
AI will make things up just fine, unfortunately it's also going to make up rules and forget what happened 5 minutes ago. So no, I do not recommend AI for learning D&D.
You can check out the above info box for a plethora of useful resources.
If you're willing to spend some money, I can recommend the new starter box "Heroes of the Borderlands". It has a lot of introductory helpers.
How does the find players and such work? I just made my thread but cant find the info I added in the edits 1-5
Since you mentioned looking to find players I assume you're a DM. Once you've made your post prospective players will respond to the attached thread.
Can they see all the info I added? And if so how? (I can't see it myself now)
Anything you told the bot will show up in the post IIRC. If you have any edits or clarifications you'd need to send a message in your post's thread
Are you referring to this post: #looking-for-players message ?
I can only see the thread box by the bot and the two comments underneath.
Yeah I did the 5 edits thingy and I couldn't find the info past that. How am I supposed to do it?
Not sure what you mean. Do you mean the 5 or so prompts the bot gives you to fill out for things like game time, style of play, etc?
Yeah those
Some players have got back to me so its all good I think they can see what I added. 👍👍
Yeah those prompts are automatically added into the thread post
Hi good morning to all!! I'm new in D&D is there any server I can join as a listener?
do you mean like to watch others play dnd?
Yep exactly that
It's unlikely that groups will let you watch them play, unless you're watching streamers
Could maybe check some of the adventurer's league servers and ask if the table is okay with a spectator
otherwise a bunch of Adventurer's Leagues tables steam due to increased service awards for both DMs and Players in streamed games
You can find games on YouTube and Twitch, both recorded and live.
Thanks to all, I'll watch them
hey! i was just wondering if anyone would want to play dnd, im new to it and id love to meet someone whos up for teaching me.4
Check out #learn-to-play for some links to free rules and other useful info / resources 😎
If you're looking for people to play with, see #find-a-game for the instructions of the LFG channels
Who is Azothoth?
In modern dnd, Hadar is probably the closest entity to Azathoth
unless you mean in older versions where they borrowed from outside media
Do we have like a creature/entity that's straight up impossible to kill/defeat?
Anything the DM says you can't basicly
Also this channel is more for new to D&D folks to get help getting started
Check #channel-guide to find the best channel for a specific topic
If it has a stat block, it can be killed 😏
can a cleric follow a god just to get the magic or do they actually need to believe/devote themselves ?
A cleric does not have to have/believe in a deity to have or use magic
Originally yes, but as of more recently it is not strictly necessary.
Just play, there’s no reason to spectate
How do you find your spellcasting modifier? Is it just your spellcasting ability's modifier or is proficiency included as well?
Your spellcasting modifier is just your spellcasting ability mod.
But if you're asking for your spell save DC, that's 8 + spellcasting mod + prof
or your spell attack bonus: spellcasting mod + prof
See here for the rules reference on that:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spells#SavingThrows
This answer may sound a little silly but your “Spellcasting ability modifier” is the modifier of your Spellcasting ability. So if you are a wizard and you have +5 intelligence, then your Spellcasting ability modifier is +5.
Thanks but the sheet doesn't say "spellcasting ability modifier", otherwise I would have just filled that in. Thanks for the clarification though.
Yep, I understand. The rules use the phrase "Spellcasting modifier" and "Spellcasting ability modifier" interchangeably, so I totally get the confusion.
Guys i need recommendation about character creation, in the last campaign i had i play as paladin and i really enjoy the playstyle, able to be the frontline, still do damage while also supporting your team it feels awesome, but i don't want to just reusing one character... So is there class or subclasses that play like paladin?
I have some suggestions for you, but let’s hop over to #character-discussion because that’s a better channel for this question
okayy
Hexblade
Kind of ish
Is it on PHB? I don't think i ever heard that one before... I only have PHB 24 rn heheh
@ornate glacier hey, that blessing you were talking about, I can transfer that to doip? Would I need him to start his campaign on that adventure first to get that or did you just mean to add it to his character from the get go somehow?
I have a question if I would wanna join a game do I have to be a certain age
Bc I look at channels and I don’t see an age requirement but I don’t wanna but in
I imagine if there's no age requirement specified, the game doesn't have one, but you can ask to be certain.
Alr ty :D
hello everyone what is changed if I change my tool proficiencies
You wouldn't add your proficiency bonus to checks with that (old) tool and would be unable to craft equipment that (old) tool is capable of.

Which book on ddb would teach me about the deities? Like there are followers of talos in my adventure but i dont know who talos is other than god of storms or someshit
I know the DMG 2014 has info about the gods. Not sure if that was carried over in 2024. Fortunately, some of it was included with the 2014 Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse
You can also find tons of info on the Forgotten Realms wiki: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
On that gods of the multiverse section its just like: name/allignment/symbol but nothing about their lore or personalities etc, ill check the wiki though tyy
That blessing can be given to anyone, and would probably wish best if given from the beginning.
uhm so as a first time player where online would be a good place to try and find a campaign, I made my first character sheet so I wanna know the next step

Haii, I'm not necessarily new to 5e DnD but I have not had much opportunity to play a lot. I am looking to start DMing and working on a homebrew campaign.
Anyone who's more experienced can maybe review/discuss the campaign with me? :3
I’m a first timer but I do more or less know the basics of how DnD works and how the combat usually works. I absolutely love RPGs and thought it was time I play DnD.
My 11 year old wants to learn how to play D&D with his friends. Think that would make me a Dungeon Master to help them, but I've never actually played before. We got a couple boxes that include a starter set and essential kit. What's the quickest way to learn the basics?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
hi! ive really been into d&d for a long time now, but ive never actually played before, and i know little to nothing about it. i really wanna start learning about it and id be super happy to start playing!
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
Hey guys I have need some help
I am making a story in which a dragonborne is trying to get an elf in helping him get some kind of a key to get to another dragonborne colour race to kill them
How can I get the elf to get introduced into the narration and make him get fooled into helping the dragonborne
Btw both of these characters are players
This sounds like a topic for #dm-discussion !
Offer something to good to be true or something
Hi. I'm very interested in playing DnD but it's just my bf and me for the moment. Can i find a 2 player newbie friendly campaign i can try or so ? I saw some "DnD date night" bundle on internet but apparently its not good at all
So like one of you plays and the other dms?
Idk yeah maybe ! I just want to discover DnD with my bf, until we find other players
(its crap according to reddit) but i saw somethings like that https://rpgmapsforge.com/products/the-ultimate-d-d-date-night-bundle
I’m brand new to this I know I obv need a set of dice but would be some good extra things to buy for a beginner to help with organization and what not

Hey so I'm using the Avrae bot and I'm wondering how I apply True Strike to a Rapier.
It's !cast "True Strike" -t [monster] Rapier
right?
You can find adventures (and everything you need to know about one-on-one play) at D&D Duet. Specifically, here's where the authors point readers toward their content: https://dndduet.com/category/playablecontent/adventures/page/4/
Thank you ! Im looking at the website and WOW, it's a lot to learn but its exciting !
I wouldn't say you need to know all of what's on there!
Better asked in #ddb-avrae-help or the Avrae server (check out Avra.io). I don't think True Strike is automated to take a weapon target? The developers might know on the Avare Discord server.
Hey I played with the 5e rules way back when. I just saw that they released the 2024 rulebooks, what are some of the changes in the updated rulebooks?
All classes start their subclasses at level 3 now.
There a lot of clarification and polishing up of things to make it easier to understand, such as a glossary to cover common things.
You can check the free basic rules (updated to 2024) to get a feel for it.
thanks!
Free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
what starting equipment does an outlnader start out with?
You can't check the outlander page in the handbook? 😅
ok
I have an issue with the charecter builder on the D&D Beyond website, i want to choose my race but lizardfolk is not on there.
Do you own one of the books Lizardfolk comes in?
The most recent would be Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
That’s why, Lizardfolk isn’t a free option
ok
!a rapier -ts dexterity -with intelligence
is how i can apply True Strike to a weapon using the D&D Avrae bot, right? It never states that I'm using True Strike so I'm wondering if I'm doing it right
Without paying, if you have access to the book elsewhere, like a copy at your local library or game store, you can enter in its information to DDB’s homebrew creator to use it.
Otherwise your DM or fellow party member may own the right book + a master tier subscription on D&DBeyond so they can content share the book with you
Try asking in #ddb-avrae-help !
ok thanks
For flavor how old would an elf be in human years (if said human is in their 30's)
I haven't played a game of DnD since I was 17 😭 I'm practically new

Prolly 150
Socially or biologically?
Biologically they age and mature at the same rate as humans, so a 30 year old Elf is equivalent to a 30 year old human. They'll have the same amount of lived experience.
biologically
Then yeah a 30 year old elf will be equivalent to a 30 year old human.
i set her at 200 years old in my campaign because i want her to be in her 30's in human years
Elves' don't develop slower than humans
hmmm so in dnd rules elves just age the same rate as humans?
They mature at the same rate
its not like a lord of the ring things where one can be 1000 years old ?
They can live to about 750
Their biological aging process slows once they enter adulthood, to put it simply
so say my elf right now is 80 years old, where does she stand in society (she's level 12)
im assuming 150-200 years old is too old
150-200 is fine, it's not old by Elvish standards.
In the average society she's someone who looks young but with a lot of lived experience. To Elvish culture (assuming you're using the Forgotten Realms setting), she'd be nearing the end of her "young adulthood" so to speak
yeah forgotten realms, she's basically a retired veteran thats going on an adventure again
Yeah that seems fine
so 200 years old is fine?
how do i play
Yeah. Just for RP purposes you might want to consider how long they were in military service, and what they did outside of that. As an example a 40 year military service gives you a storied record IRL, now imagine having an extra 100+ years of adult experience outside of that.
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
you know the story of Simo Hayha ?
Yeah I do
she fought in the millitary long enough to be called the White Death
I'd certainly expect someone who developed that kind of reputation to be higher than level 1.
level 12 right now, going all the way to 17
Oh yeah, that sounds appropriate for a level 12
hi, im looking to join a game but i cant really see any beginner friendly ones in #find-a-game do yall know of any with slots still open ?
A game is likely to still allow beginners, even if it doesn't specifically claim the game as a "beginner game", so no harm in asking!
alright, thanks for the advice!
ill say what i say to everyone
community server are underrated
for learning dnd over campaigns
me and my friends are trying out dnd i have been task to be the DM, what should i learn before being a DM?
Hey , I am a returning player to dnd after not properly playing since covid and thought this server would be a good place to start
I wanna start playing DND but I don't know the basics or how to play

Hey I have a dnd book but idk if it will help me as a brand new returning dnd player
Maybe? Depends on the group you’re playing with and if that book is something they use.
You can check out the free D&D rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
This is based on the 2024 updates
It has a like dragon on the front
What’s the name of the book? Players Handbook?
Yeah players handbook but I got it a good while ago
During lockdown
Okay so that’s the 2014 Players Handbook which is usable with the 2024 updates (2024 stuff is forward compatible meaning it works with 2014 materials with just minor tweaks needed)
Check out the free basic rules I just linked to but yeah generally you should be fine with the 2014 PHB
Is there anyone who would deal with me asking a shit ton of questions about dnd because ive never played it, and none of my friends know it so im gonna be the dm and i have so many questions
This is the right channel for that!
I will say that just a skim across the first chapter of the basic rules may already answer a bunch of questions!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Thank you so muchhh!!
You can post looking for player stuff in #find-a-game
Oh okay thanks
Ok I want to play my first campaign but, I need guidance while playing and understanding mechanics. Are there any sessions where dm's are walking players through how things work, like a session focused purley on new players?
there might be, but you'll find it in the #find-a-game channels
most tables take new players, if they are looking. Some community servers have regular games completely for new players
Just for clarity though, if you're looking for a game that specifically walks you through how to play and teaches you the rules, that's going to be considerably harder to find.
You're going to want to try to read through the Basic Rules on your own no matter what kind of game you end up with.
The absolute basics are say what you're after and how you intend to get it, roll a d20 when prompted by the DM and add a number, hope it's high enough.
For combat, try looking up a "dnd combat cheat sheet" or similar.
Okay so im gonna play dnd this weekend for the first time. And im the dm. I dont think ive studied enough. I do not understand how the wizard learns the spells or how other things work. So i came to ask if its okay for my first game to make some of the rules myself and play it a bit easier until i find a good person to teach me and after that we play normally, not this weird easy way
A bunch of Internet strangers have no control over what you do at your table!
Thats true haha i just dont want to bend the rules TOO MUCH and make it a completely different game if you know what i mean
You're going to get things wrong as a new DM. And even after years of playing, you will make mistakes. That's just inevitable! If you think altering the rules will help, go for it.
I’m completely new to playing, i think the only way i can play is online. How do i start 🤷🏻♂️

There are a ton of resources online, personally I use an app called Game Master 5th Edition by Lion's Den. It has a page for quick rules references built in that covers most of what you might need, ie conditions, traps, saves and what they're used for, same for Skills, aswell as a bunch of other little tidbits.
That said, don't be afraid to wing it or just tell the players you need to check something real quick and Google it 😉
Thank you!!! Helped me so much
Glad it helped 😁
Try Startplaying.games, #looking-for-players or Roll20. Those 3 have lots of games for online play, along with plenty of games specifically aimed at new players.
hey i am a returning player to dnd and i found my dice box i bought during lock down and was wondering how many dice i should. have in a set / how many dice i need as i might be joining an ril session for the first time soon
just one of each of the 7 is already good enough (D4, d6, d8, D10 - d100 which is per cent, D12, d20)
A minimum set has six- 1 each of d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20
Many sets will have a second d10 to use for making percentage cheeks
like how many sides it has right ?
yes
i see , i mean i cant send a photo of my dice or box here sadly
We have #merch-and-dice where folks show off their D&D goods!
ahh ok thank you . i would like to send my dice box there as well but idk if its any good , i think i got it at. a charity shop
i would love to own that much but it sounds expensive , i got my one set of dice as a gift
also i have this book called the players handbook that i got a while ago but i read that it is out of date , is it no good?
It's still good, feel free to use it.
Usually one set is enough. Maybe get a couple individual dice for specific actions or spells, for example if you have an attack that deals 3d8 maybe pick up a couple extra d8's to make rolling faster, but definitely don't have to do that.
Most things are still the same so it shouldn't be a problem.
well i dont know abut spells or anything as i have never played in an irl session before and the last ime i fully played was in covid online
i mean i am going to a "tabletop club " for the first time next week where they play all kinds of things like warhammer dnd , mtg etc , but i think they have a dnd campgin in progress and im worried they wont let me in
can i just post a pic of my box and dice ? or do i need to write anything?
I'd probably include some text just to give people some idea of what they're looking at and/or why you're showing it off. "I just bought this." "I've had this since XXXX." "Excited to get back into it after X years away!"
probobly the last one , "excited to get back into dnd since covid and found my dice box"
Sounds good. Also, no need to directly reply to every message, thanks.
whiopps sorry my bad i always forget discord auto pings every reply
Yeah, someday they'll let us make off the default for replies. Someday
they should yeah
Hi, I am totaly new to dnd as I bought some one shot date adventures online for valentines day. I am planning to play it with my girlfriend as surprise and to try something new. But as I said I am complete beginner so any tips how could I learn at least some basics until valentine day are welcome.

so my dm let us choose any weapon we can have and i noticed on a wiki mentions of an enspelled weapon and was wondering what are they?
i dont know if this a question that can be answerd but can i join a campaign that has been goijg on for a while alreday?
If the table lets you, sure!
Yup like they said, you certainly can join an ongoing game if invited
They’re a magic item. Lets you store spells in your weapons
do you have to know the spell?
Ask if your DM meant any mundane weapon or if you’re allowed to choose magic items first, I’d say
well thats the thing im not sure if i am invited
But no I don’t think so
That would be difficult then. If you are invited though, then there's no issues.

What exactly do you mean by “not sure”?
You’re either invited or you’re not…
well i saw a poster advertsing a local "tabletop gaming club" i messaged the phone number and they said that they meet on X day every month and they do dnd warhammer magic the gathering etc
and to join their facebook group
they said yes
Then that’s a “yes” to the club. When you get there orbefore you get there contact one of the DM’s of possible
Like yes to magic items? Any rarity limitation?
We can't tell you how one specific tabletop club works, unfortunately!
well i dont know about the DM or anythying like that . i mean his exact words roughly were Hi (my name ). Yes we run on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evening each Month. There is a D&D group and also card/boardgames and some 40k/Wargaming. If you are on Facebook you can join our page "(place) Gaming Club"
well there is one thing to keep in mind you have 20000 gold and if it is a wondrous item or is a legendary then the shop keeper would most likely scam you
Join the Facebook page then, did you get any valuable info?
i did join the group but all i saw was someone posting warhammer figures someone elses board game collection and a i guess recap of a dnd story which i have yet to read but can send
What’s your class and level, and game version?
5e fighter and lvl 15
Both 2014 and 2024 rules are 5e
oh uhhh i think 2024
Then you can store level 5 spells with a spell attack modifier of +9, and a save DC of 17
Cuz that’s “Very Rare”
well i could try and get a legendary but it basically would cost more
Oh wait can you afford this?…
idk much about that translating gold wise
Hello
Ask your DM how much a very rare magic or legendary item would cost
ye im doing that rn
Gooood morning afternoon evening!
Imma have to go for a bit
rare or below ;-; and ye thats fine
Smiles y’all friendly here i am new am I missing anything
Welcome to the official D&D Discord server run by Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes and publishes D&D! Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Feel free to ask specific questions as you learn and run into things.
Hello I have a question i want to play, idk what to do to make a figurine, if there is any advice for someone who wants to play as DM but is new to D&D that would be greatly appreciated, i am very socially awkward so i apologize if i worded anything weirdly or something
To make a character, you follow the rules, which I just linked above!
#dnd-minis is the best place to discuss figurines and miniatures if those interest you. But I should clarify that minis are absolutely not a requirement to play.
Then for spelled weapons it’s a level 3 spell with a save dc of 15 and a to hit of +8
Ah ok ty!
Oki ty!
I’m just excited and want to play XD
What subclass?
well there is 250 plus people in the facebook group and i think there is only like 5 people in a dnd party so idk if they will want me to play
It’s a club. If they didn’t want ya to play they wouldn’t advertise it
Plus, that group includes other games too
aw man that kinda ruins the idea i had which was dominate monster on it
eldritch knight
That’s legendary lol
well true but i dont know if they do just one campaign or not i mean i dont play warhammer or magic the gathering or anything like that . the closest i am to board games is monopoly
Are you playing as a player, or are you DMing a game? There's some difference in the advice depending on which one.
yeah ik but i guess thats fair since that spell is kinda busted
It's about the level of the spell, not what the spell does
You can fireball which is nice
Or hypnotic pattern
Ope not hypnotic pattern that’s illusion
i mean you get to control a monster thats pretty good
An enspelled weapon might not be the best then, as you already have spells. Did he specifically say weapons, or is it magic items in general?
Wait you can get spirit guardian!
wut?
This is definitely more of a #character-discussion conversation, I think
Agreed
yeah fair
how do i know if an irl dnd session will allow a new player mid campagin ?
You ask.
i mean true haha but i have never been to this "tabletop gaming club" before or anything like it and the facebook page has 250 members so idk what to do
Can you contact an organiser or anything?
well thats how it started i texted the phone number on the poster and all he said was that they run dnd 40k mtg and other games every 1st and 3rd wednesday thats it.
So you follow up and ask whatever specific questions you have about how it works.
I am leaning more towards DM but I do want to eventually play as a player
Join their community page. Read about it. Maybe see if there's a place to introduce yourself. Take your time, but do reach out. Nobody's going to know you want to play unless you say.
well he said :"if you are on facebook you can join our group" i repliead thanks i just sent an invite to join the group and now they havent answerd
well the very first thing i texted them was Hi there
I saw your poster advertising a tabletop gaming club and was interested in finding out more information about dungeons and dragons
Thanks
My local Discord channel has near four hundred members, and I know for a fact they don't all go down town on a Wednesday together.
You're good! You've got this. Have patience.
"I'm waiting be approved to join the Facebook group. Does that have more info about how the group runs? I've never done a club like this, so I'm not sure how everything works."
The questions you're asking us, you should be asking them.
im in the group now on facebook and it doesnt really have much dnd stuff . it had a post of someones 40k models a picture of someones board games and there was a recap of the first meeting of 2026 which i didnt go to and in the recap it talks about the dnd session
So you tell them that. "I went on the FB group and it didn't tell me much. I still have questions." So you ask those questions!
I got a question about... Describing stuff, specifically attacks. How do I as a barbarian player make more descriptive and better explained attacks that aren't "I hit person with hammer on leg" as I do rn?
i just dont want to be pushy seems as they havent replied yet
i do like that kind of combat i would say like if it was a final hit ' i swung my hammer at the trolls skull the wind moving like a tornado behind it , the hammer smashes the trolls skull into pieces as he falls lifelss to the ground "
"I run up and swing wildly at the skeleton's legs!"
"I loose a war cry and swing down at its head with both hands!"
"The troll looks like it's distracted by our wizard, so I approach from behind and try to catch it off guard with a swing to the back!"
Sure. Do it when it seems appropriate. I don't know when you've done these things.
well i spoke to them at like 1pm so thats all good but i cant message them now its like 9pm haha
Well if you're going to DM for the first time, my advice would be to familiarize yourself a bit with the basic rules. Focusing on Skill checks, Saving throws, Conditions, and Combat in general.
But the most important advice I would give first time DMs is don't sweat it. By that I mean that noone expects you to be perfect straight out of the gate, so focus less on getting everything perfect and focus more on having a good time 😁
am i right that a average dnd party is around 5 people plus 1 dm?
Please stop pinging me. And the game design is 4-7 players and 1 DM, but I think it's more like between 3 and 6 players, 1 DM.
sorry i keep forgetting it auto pings
thats whayt im a little worried about i mean if they have say 6 people alreday then they wont want some rando joining ahlfway through the campaign or however far they are
Some people are fine with a larger table. But I doubt they're the only D&D game in town. And they're definitely not the only one out there if you're able/willing to play online.
well this is the thing , they are deffo the only dnd game in my town and its not even my town its a 30 minitue drive but yeah online would be my other option if it wasnt i live in the uk so every time they run a session its at like midnight until 4am
#looking-for-players has a bunch of UK-based posts. And this server is far from the only place to search for games.
well i was in a like open world dnd gane around a year ago on discord but it wasnt the best
i would love to play but seems as now i have said i want to go to this tabletop club i dunno if i can do both
Why not? Plenty of people play in more than one game. Not saying you should, but it's not unusual.
am i right there are these games where you start and finish everything in one 3 hour ish session?
Yep, those are one-shots.
I feel your pain, I also live in Europe, and yeah most of the online games I join are in the middle of the night for me. That said there are also alot of games that start in the afternoon/evening, say around 5-6pm or 17-18:00
are one shots common? that sounds like a good diea to start and "get back into dnd" also i was thinking of beind the dm but idk if i have the confidence for that
Though one-shots often run longer than 3 is hours
Pretty common, I think.
Fairly common imo.
are they fun ? might be less preasure than the "you must sign up for 6 months to play " kinda deal
Some folks like 'em. Some don't. I enjoy them myself.
helloooooooo
They can be, though they are often combat oriented, so alot of things get left out
is it nad to say that i think i am going to like combat more than roleplay ?
People like different parts of the game. That's not a problem. Ideally, though, you find a group who likes the same things.
Guys i DONT know anything about dnd but i saw bunch of videos on them and they are cool. So what do i do as a begginer in dnd?

Not at all, everyone has their own preferences in regards to play-style
Okkk thank you so much❤️
well without hurting myself i am a little socially awkered especially if i had to roleplay so i like just beating people up
Same, still struggle with roleplay sometimes 😂
what annoys me is i have sooo many cool character ideas but i dont know what i can do what i cant do and how i can do it i have 2 alreday for my next time i play maybe 3
Some folks come up with way more character ideas than they can play. And not every idea fits into D&D. Which is why other games can be worth exploring. Or other creative outlets.
can i ask a stupid question ? what is a bard ? i mean i assume its a mucisian cause thats what drew me to them when i got back into it recently cause i am a mucisian irl
They can use any art, but typically it’s music
Literature, painting, singing, they’re just storytellers
They channel magic through their words
Usually artsy, they collect bits and pieces of knowledge. Eclectic sorts, if you know that word.
can they fight
sophisticated ?
Sure. Every class can in D&D.
but some are better ? like shirtless rage barbarian?
Eclectic in the sense of "a little this, a little that."
ohhh like hoarder
Yep. Classes excel at different things. And there are subclasses, specializations within each class, that can play differently from others.
Intellectual hoarders, maybe.
am i right that a bard has this thing called a college of creation where they can make things apear out of thin air?
Yes
is it real or fake ?
It's a real subclass. They can't create anything, though; like most things in D&D, there are limits.
i see, i meant fake as in is it real creation or is it like rabbit in a hat deception ?
It's a real object.
oh i see, i did see a subclass online but it was more of a combat subclas
like i play a power chord on a guitar and suddenly a sword appears?
Sure, if you want
is there one called college of metal?
https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/College_of_Metal_(5e_Subclass) this looked so cool
That’s homebrew
Oki ty!
Yes
ah so i probobly cant use it i see
is this where i have to ask the dm if i can use it ?
I would try to stick to the official options as a new player before asking about homebrew.
Yepp third-party and homebrew are at the DMs discretion
ah ok , so if i was to do say a one shot, do i get to make my own character or do they have premade people for the one session?
Varies.
oh i see, i mean i dont know what class to play when i do join one , i dont remeber what i played during lockdown
I recommend bringing a small handful of options so you don't choose one thing and then are out of luck if it's not approved.
Even using regular stuff?
Yes
Sure. "I brought a druid!" "We already have a druid...."
Again, we don't know the table, so we can't say definitively what you should do. But better to be prepared as much as you can without going overboard.
Well I personally don’t have an issue with two people of the same class
So is it even worse if I go with nothing ? I assume so cause they want to get going rather than making me a character ?
Sure. And I don't either. But some tables do!
Some tables might tho
Isn’t it imbalanced tho if you have like 5 wizards spamming fireball ?
If it were me, I'd bring three or four character sheets. Completed ones.
Standard array, official options only.
If it were me, I’d ask them the necessary information then make a character off that
is the game still good without all the expansions
Yes
planning on doing a paladin 2h is there any build guides that are good for 2026
wait so make 3 full charcters with stats ands everything to my first session?
I would as a precaution. But I also don't have any issues creating characters.
ok so thats doable i can make 3 characters , i would like to cast spells but i know thats really complicated so i might just have to stick to easy stuff idk
Someone probably has one, what subclass and are you doing point buy or roll for stats
cleric probably seems like the right choice
Unfortunately the new rules are well... new, so not alot of good guides out there. Though this most likely is a better discussion for #character-discussion

i mean the next irl session a the local club isnt until next wednesday so i have time to find out more about it/ the people doing dnd there i think
Alright can someone explain me how combat works in basic terms?
(Forget movement like the 30ft range thing cuz my dm doesn't really care about that we removed that to make it less complicated)
Side note; I am a new first time player, playing with 3 other new first time players and 1 new first time dm.
We have only had 1 session, that was a lot of fun, but i think we didn't do combat the right way,...
Initiative:
Determinate when each one start (unless you do a surprise round or you get surprised and that is a free round for the ones doing the ambush) their turns
In a Turn you get:
Movement: Determinated by your Speed (Normally 30ft unless feat, race, spell, etc.), its less if in difficulty terrain or conditions.
Action :Spell, attack, dash, disengage, etc.
Bonus action :can be any of the actions mentioned before in action and can be added using some objects too (potions)
(considerate that only can use 1 spell per turn)
Free action: You can do this action that some classes had it in many ways, READ the class features.
There is few exceptions like Action surge, haste, stop time, etc.. Read about them
When isnt your turn you have Reaction (some spells or features in a class let you do things reacting to certain conditions, read them but an example is a spell lvl 1 called shield that give you +5 AC in the moment someone is attacking you)
You only get 1 of each per turn except Free actions.
Interact with objects in the arena, help someone, etc. are actions.
@dark sonnet thanks for answering, now suppose I was a barbarian and decided to attack a goblin with my greataxe, how would I calculate the damage I did?
1d12+Strength modifier+ rage bonus if you’re raging
But first you’d have to roll to hit
When u say strength modifier, is that just adding my strength stat?
No, strength modifier and strength score are different
For example, if you have 16 strength, the modifier is a +3
How do I calculate the modifier?
Every 2 that it goes above or under 10, it changes by 1
The mathematical formula is (ability score -10)/2
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
You can consult the table in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#AbilityScores
Or if you don't want to check the BR a score of 10 is a +0 modifier, every 2 points up or down in a score adds/subtracts 1 from the modifier
The Abiltiy Scores and Modifiers table at the bottom here
Thank u so much you all, I'll try to implement the actual combat through the dm, rn we were just calculating the number we rolled as damage xD
Have you guys read through the Basic Rules yet?
The dm somehow skipped over combat and thought we'll make it up as we go just cuz we are too excited to play 😅
Fair enough but yeah the full combat rules are here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#Combat
Thanks
hi, how does one make a post in #looking-for-players ?
The instructions to do so are in #find-a-game !
how do most people play their games is it on roll 20??
There are many VTTs people use for online games, roll20 is a popular one
Usually you'd join a group and use whichever VTT the DM is using
Most if not all of the time VTTs are free for players, either because the whole service is free or because the DM gives invite access to their campaign on it.
hey thanks, figured it out
For attacks you first need to roll to hit. This is calculated as 1d20 plus your attack bonus for the weapon. The attack bonus is the ability modifier you use for the attack, usually either strength or dexterity, plus your proficiency bonus, assuming you're proficient in the weapon.
Spells are done roughly the same, except they use your spellcasting modifier, if it's an attack. Some spells use saves though, in that case the one(s) being affected by the spell roll the indicated save vs your Spell Save DC. The DC is 8+proficiency bonus+spell modifier.
Also those saying your modifier is determined by every 2 points your ability score goes over or under 10 aren't quite right. For positive modifiers it's every 2 up from 10, so 12=+1, 14=+2, etc. But for negative scores it's every 2, but on uneven numbers, so 9=-1, 7=-2, etc
Modifier = rounddown (score/2) - 5

You have the 2024 PHB?
That'll cover the same content as the Basic Rules and quite a bit more
It’s the 2 in 1 for players and DMs
I'm not aware of any official 2-in-1 Handbook unless you mean a DMG/PHB bundle your table has bought
If it's not the Basic Rules and it's not the PHB I'd ensure it matches the same content as either of those
i have no idea how to play dnd 👌

Im still quite confused for like the dice rolls, what if someone were to roll terribly low like a 4 but than with the added numbers it’s about 15? Does that mean it’s a success?
Or is it my call as the dm?
i know dice rolls are from 1-20, which is easy to understand until I realized that there are added numbers because of a character’s stat.
Honestly reading the DND guide book gets me a bit lost, I’m not someone whose able to read a book on screen but rather physically
It could be a success depending on whether the DC or AC is 15
Let's use an example of an melee weapon attack against a creature with an armor class of 14
The player rolls a d20 and adds their characters modifier (lets say they have a +4 strength modifier) and proficiency bonus (let's say they're level 1 and have a +2 proficiency bonus) to see if their attack hits
Let's say they roll a 10 - pretty average for a d20 😉
They then add the +4 strength modifier and the +2 proficiency bonus to that roll result
That means they got a total of 16
10 from the dice roll + 4 from the strength modifier + 2 from the proficiency bonus = 16
That meets and beats the armor class of 14
So the attack hits
Now let's run an example with a skill check.
Let's say they are trying to clamber over an obstacle and you decide that the Difficulty Challenge (DC) is a 15. It's a difficult challenge to get over.
The player says they'd like to use their athletic skills (and you agree that that makes sense) to clamber over the obstacle.
They roll a d20 and add their athletics skill bonus (strength modifier + proficiency if they are proficient in athletics)
So let's say their character is proficient in athletics, they roll a 14, and their athletics skill bonus total is +6 (+4 from strength modifier, +2 from proficiency bonus and totals up to +6)
That means 14 +6 = 20
That meets and beats the DC of 15 that you set - so their character manages to get over that obstacle.
Let's say instead of rolling a 14 they roll a 5.
5 + 6 = 11
11 does not meet or beat the Difficulty Challenge of 15 so they do not succesfully clamber over the obstacle
does the dm choose the stats and such of the monsters in there campaign? I was wondering because in the monster manual or on dnd beyond it gives stats for the monsters when I though that the dm made them up. I'm a little confused.
They can use monsters from official D&D sources that have stat blocks already made.
Or they could homebrew a monster.
Usually it's just easier to use an existing monster stat block
New DM here, my player is gonna be a Warlock. We’re both new to the game, and we were confused on how the spell slots work.
Warlocks are a bit different then other spellcasters because they always cast their spells at the highest level they have. They also refresh all their spell slots on a short rest.
But basically to cast a spell that is not a cantrip, you need to have an appropriate leveled spell slot available.
So if you wanted to cast fireball, you would need at least one available 3rd level spell slot to cast it.
can you cast all those cantrips at will however?
Correct - cantrips do not rquire a spell slot
and you get if i recall like 4 slots at level one
I believe so - the class table should list how many spells known and spell slots they have
You can also cast spells using a higher level spell slot. Sometimes this allows you to target more creatures or cause more damage - the spell will state how upcasting effects it if there is an effect.
But again warlocks will always cast spells at the highest spell slot level they have.
is it normal to have a -5 on all stats?
Not at all

I usually play a spell caster for campaigns but for my newest campaign i’ve decided to try to play a barbarian. My question is how do weapon masteries work?
Hiiii! New to dnd
This channel is flood idk how to use
Like idk what the stuff there is..there's a Pokemon mystery dungeon campaign listed bottom
You find a game that looks interesting and message the game poster or use the thread attached to the game post to communicate interest
Is that really how you join games ?
Basically this or get some frined who already play dnd
May I ask uh, how homebrews work- like can I just make my own class or?
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.
Generally you would need to get Dungeon Master approval before showing up to their game with any homebrew
They would need to make sure it's balanced and workable for their D&D game
I've got a pacifist meat shield druid.
And a healer that has all spells on wild magic, so if you want healing enjoy strength buffs etc
I wanna make a character based off my favorite book
*wait no, my druid is a bard I forgot
Idk why but the friend told me to change it to bard.
Check out https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#MasteryProperties
It explains the masteries and their effects
Usually charcters are made after you find a group cause some dms have their own preferences and table rules
You can definitely get lots of inspiration from other media but do not that not everything translates 1:1 into D&D game mechanics.
Was told to make characters first and submit them as a way to "apply"
Be prepared to adjust your character to the needs of the camapign/game
The character I wanna make is like, alchemist and necromancer?
Like you may need to use Standard Array instead of rolled ability scores
It’s from a dark fantasy novel beep
I don't know your character but artificer is an official D&D class and necromancer was (in 2014 rules) an official wizard subclass.
Ah got it then prolly artificer
Correct me if i’m wrong, so you can have 2 weapon mastries that you can change out after every short rest
Every long rest you can swap one out
Ok ok ty
But yes you have two weapon masteries as a barbarian
Trying to get into a group is harder than trying to get a college diploma.
You might check out #looking-for-community - often they have games that are more drop in style with no set DM or set player group
But also spread your search wide
Try looking into other servers or ask your friends if they play dnd
yall have any tips for somone just learning abt dnd?
this ^
oh yeah 😅
been playing bg3 and now I highk wanna try dnd
@light cedar @fossil nymph
Players handbook is the way to go but i also like recommending this series to people because its a lot more fast pased https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDnRMnDDjAzK5uZLidDUtHtD1iN06Qe0G&si=1R8_-HlPKRpEHErB
bet, I’ll check it out fs 🤙
tysmmm ima check it out rn lmao
You can also lean into alchemist without Artificer by taking proficiencies in alchemy and building on that. Wizard for your main class and go necromancy but maybe your also a mad scientist.
I still need help learning dnd im a hands on learner
I’ve never played dnd before and I have allready made a character and art for said character I don’t know how to make a character sheet I’d like to join a campaign thats not to strict I just wanna have fun and not over the age of 18

Hey everyone! I'm a complete newcomer to playing DnD in general besides consuming adjacent media like livestreams, Matthew Colville, BG3 etc. I have around 4 friends who seem to be willing to play dnd but also never did. And as no-one wants to be a DM, i am thinking of being one myself. Are there any particular things i should know or should do? I do have the starter set with "The mines of Phandelver". But i myself was thinking that a one-shot might be better for a single session at first.
Hello I am compleatl new to DND never played a single session but I really would like to I have 2 chars made in DND beyond with a good friend of mine my English isn't the best bc my main language is German but I'm happy to try how do I start the best here to find a session with a DM who has patience and a few other people need to the game? I found commands but do I need to use find players and find DM?
Hey Shadow, nice to see you join the community 😁 If you're looking for a game you can either post an ad in #looking-for-dm or you can try to find a DMs game in #looking-for-players
You can also look at other sites and communities such as Roll20, Start Playing, even Reddit and Facebook. I personally suggest Start Playing as they have a pretty good filter system, including one specifically for new players.
Hey David, nice to see you joining the community 😁 If you're just starting out as a DM, then some good starting points would be looking through the basic rules in order to familiarize yourself with some of the mechanics. The main ones to keep in mind are general combat, how things like initiative, AC, saving throws, action economy, and movement work. Skill checks, and how they work, how to set the DC, and what each skill does and how they work.
Starter sets or one-shots are a great place to start. Starter sets are usually specifically set up in a way to help people learn the game and how it works, both for players and DNs. One-shots are also good as they don't put pressure on people to commit to a long term game. Both are great ways to get started, though I tend to lean more towards the starter sets when both the players and the DM are new, as they're very good at teaching the game.
A tip for an outside source that can help is the app Game Master 5th Edition by Lion's Den, they have an easy to access and understand cheat sheet for various rules.
But the most important thing to remember as a DM is don't sweat it. What I mean by that is that nobody is perfect right out of the gate, don't be afraid to tell your players that your unsure about something and need to check it, or make a temporary ruling until you can check the rules/mechanics. This is something even veteran DMs encounter, so it doesn't make you a "bad DM" if it happens.
Oh, thank you for such a lengthy response! Luckily i already have the players handbook although i did see there is a 2024 version now which i might have to get. And probably getting the DM guide would also be pretty handy for those rules.
The only reason i'd probably go for a oneshot at first is to see if my friends do like playing it so afterwards i could try and setup the longer campagin of Phendelver but it could also help me get atleast a little feel for DMing too. The one-shot i was eyeing over is called "A most potent brew" which seems pretty fun but i can also always try a smaller simpler idea.
The cheatsheet seems like it could come in handy! So thank you for that recommendation.
The only problems i think that i would have trouble with (Probably alot more things ofcourse!) But that would be describing the surroundings, encounters aswell as personalities and reasons for the NPC's.
Hey! I’m new to D&D, I’ve listened in on a few sessions and placed once with a teacher and some friends from my school with my teacher as DM. I would really like to get into it more but I have no where to play and I’m not sure where to go, plus I get super axioms of trying to join campaigns with already existing and experienced players, worried I might be judged. Do you guys have any tips on where to go or how to start playing, online is preferable but in person is also fine.
A pre-written adventure like the ones you’re looking at are really good for are really good for the non-obvious DM skills like NPC examples, encounter design, pacing, descriptions, etc.
If you’d like to use this server to find a game the instructions to do so are in #find-a-game !
If a post doesn’t explicitly advertise itself as newbie friendly it’s always good to ask. In my experience many groups don’t mind taking on newbies as long as they’re willing to learn.
Yeah, so far i did read through the Lost mines of Phendelver a couple of times and found someone on Youtube who described it aswell, which helps a ton. Now it's just taking my time in learning the rules i suppose and just taking the dive of doing it haha.
And we have #1029833015423143957 if you need to get into adventure spoilers and discuss things with folks who've run or played the adventure.
Oh! That's pretty neat
And #dm-discussion if you just need to chat DM topics with other DMs
Good to know. I'll move my dm questions and stuff to there then haha
For general things like npc names, motivations, personality, etc there are a lot of random generators for those. Some of the sites I use are; donjon, dndspeak, npcgenerator, and if those don't have what I'm looking for https://www.dnd-compendium.com/dm-resources/generators has a ton of generators.
As for describing things, a rule of thumb i generally use is using the order size-vibe-location-pause-general detail-pause-less general detail-specific detail/clue-inferance. Filling these out will generally lead to a decent description. For example; You enter a large and gloomy library. The shelves are disused and dusty. In the center is a table stacked with books, one lies open on the table, it looks like someone left in a hurry and hasn't been back in quite some time.
Oh wow, there are indeed a LOT of generators haha. And that's a pretty good way of describing things, i'll note that one down for sure!
Thank you so much.
No worries, feel free to ping or message me if you have any questions or want help with anything.
Sure thing!

Absolute newcomer to DnD, but doing some digging into the game for my first character so I can join a group at my local library.
First off, does anyone here play Chromatic Dragonborn? I fell in love with the concept thanks to a YouTube short. I was thinking a Paladin with black Chromatic ancestors. Viable?
Hello everyone
I want to play dnd with my 2 other friends but we dont think that 3 people is enough, so ive decided to join this server in hopes of finding someone willing to play with us.
We are total beginners too
Yeah you’re good. It’s difficult to make a “bad” character in 5e unless you go hard in to multiclassing. Dragonborn Paladin is a solid choice.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Can somebody please explain or guide me to finding out how mastery properties work? Does that mean like ‘short sword proficiency’ in skills or something?
And the ancestry, is it any good?
Does this section clear things up at all? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#MasteryProperties
You can post in #looking-for-dm or #looking-for-players, depending on whether you want more players for the table or a DM. In either case, you'd follow the directions in #find-a-game!
thanks
a question, can i use weapon with two-handed properties with only one hand?
It diddd thanks bestie

Nope! That's why it's called the Two-Handed property
okayy heheh
More specifically, you can hold one in one hand, but to actually make an attack with it you will need both
Can come in handy (pun intended) to know in some specific situations

One question does katanas consider as a longsword
Katanas aren’t an official weapon, so you’d need to workshop something with your DM.
The easiest solution is what you suggested, which is changing the description of something without changing the mechanics, otherwise known as reflavoring
Got it. I am new here so I don’t know. I just want to learn first then play later
Hello I'm new to dnd and would like to create a character, I still haven't got dice or anything so I'd like to know if they come in handy during the creation:]
You don't need dice during character creation, no.
The only part of character creation that might is dice is generating your Ability Scores, but the dice rolling method isn't recommended for new players anyway.
Okay thank you very much!!
You can download dndbeyond and the app is really helpful when making a new character, it can help guide you through it and do the rolls for you
Oo alright I definitely take a look at that right now thank you!!

My suggestion. Use Chat GPT to release all of your ideas
I'd prefer not to use AI
Smart move, its not even a good suggestion for this
Using ChatGBT for D&D tends to be a terrible idea. Regardless of how you feel about AI, it's notorious for getting the rules very very wrong.
I did it once because I didn’t know what to do. I guess it was a wrong move?
Chatgpt and ai in general hallucinates stuff, official sites and communities will help you understand better and (usually) not confidently lie to your face
I see. But I know what type of character I want and the next step it will be how DM will do the work
Even if you don't have a DM, you can still build characters for practice
And the more you learn the rules of the game beforehand, the easier time you'll have finding groups to play with. Most DMs appreciate when the players put in at least some effort to figure things out on their own
Is there a multisubclass? Because I wanted a samurai and ninja as my subclasses
Multiclassing is not a newcomer topic, but shortly when you multiclass, you can only gain one subclass of a class, and couldn't for example become Champion fighter and "multisubclass" into a Battlemaster fighter too
Multiclassing is an option that exists in D&D, but its highly recommended that newcomers avoid doing so
You can't take 2 subclasses for 1 class. But you can have 2 different classes, each with their own subclass.
Samurai is a fighter subclass, though Ninja doesn't currently exist in official content
Also "Ninja" isn't an official class/subclass
Ninja is not official huh? How can I get agility? It will be fighter or rogue with samurai as my subclass?
Sorry for injecting myself into the convo I'm also new to dnd, so picking a class in your charecter allows you to dictate your subclass
Subclasses are linked to classes, yeah
So which subclasses are available depends on which class you pick
Well I am thinking in having a sword fighter great in front line who has agility and great power and stamina.
Well I should look into subclasses , do all classes have subclasses cuz what would be the sub class for a sorcerer
Depends on what you mean with agility. Rogues tend to be very much in flavor of what most would consider agility, with features allowing them to dash as a bonus action, and I believe a subclass that lets them climb like a ninja 😛
Each class has a subclass not specific but you can mix it. Am I right there?
Who can move and acts like a ninja. With incredible speed
Is sword fighter a fighter subclass or you just say your charecter is a sword fighter because you use sword
I was watching a video to have the idea and I think that they are sub class if I am not mistaken
Sword fighter is not an official subclass. It's good to read over the options in the rules
Correct me if I am wrong there. Thank you
While not all of them are free, the basic rules are a good starting point
a sword fighter is just description of a character using a sword to fight
I'm struggling with writing the personal characteristics
I figured as much
It takes time don’t worry. I am still in process of doing it
Of course I want the character to start weak and leveling up until becoming a beast
"Personal characteristics" are mostly just role play prompts and notes for yourself to help you get into character. They don't have any actual mechanical effect, and most experienced players I know actually just skip them, since they already have an idea of who they want their character to be. So don't stress over this step at all. Just think about the personality of the character you want to play as, and write something to describe them so that you have it as a reference for later on
Is just that I want that character to focus in sword fighting. Of course I want a move where he has no sword
I have a question I'm the level up system and battle system from what I've heard and scan read(dnd has too much reading) the battle is dictated by the rolls depending on the situation and damage is given out based on the difference in the opponents defense + endurance stat and attackers attack roll + strength stat
Where do you do that?
D&D does not have an "endurance stat" so I am not sure where you got that from. But this is incorrect. There is no subtraction involved in dealing damage. When you attack someone, you make 2 rolls. One to see whether or not you hit, then another to see how much damage you deal. You don't subtract the enemies defenses or anything like that.
Perfect thank you very much!!
Alright thanks the endurance I have no idea what I was yapping too much
I'll read the rules more next time to truly understand
Hey all!!! 👋 im looking for a group to join in the UK 🇬🇧 - im a newbie and want to find a consistent group to play 🕺
I am a newbie too so we don’t learn at first try. So let’s bring every questions we have
But what if the first try is a miss then you can’t roll a second one?
Because why bother rolling again and see how much it will hurt the enemy if it will miss.
You only roll for damage if the attack hits
Got it
Yo what is the minimum players for dnd
Hello
That’s a difficult question to answer. The game is designed to be played with one DM and a small group of players, so 4 people is usually seen as the minimum. But you could technically play with as few as two, if it’s one player and one DM
Thanks
It varies from table to table. Many of the official adventures say 4-7 players (and 1 DM). My personal range is 3-6 players and 1 DM. Four or five players is a sweet spot, in my opinion.
6 is max actually without counting the DM
For my DND character do I pick my own moves or would they be picked for me?
You pick the options that you want from the rules.
So for example, you'd pick you species from the species list, your class from the class list, etc.
Ive already picked out a race class I'm a dragon born cleric
What else do I have to do
Up next is fill out your character sheet
Where?
The classes you choose it but in terms of making moves that’s up to you
Thanks
How many spell slots do clerics have?

Cleric
Invoke divine magic to heal, bolster, and smite
Clerics draw power from the realms of the gods and harness it to work miracles. Blessed by a deity, a pantheon, or another immortal entity, a Cleric can reach out to the divine magic of the Outer Planes—where gods dwell—and channel it to bolster people and battle foes.

Thank you
there is no max
While that is true, there definitely is a practical limit
and 6 is pretty close to what I'd consider that limit to be
Yeah, the ideal party is around 4-5, less and you have to deal with alot of canceled sessions, more and it becomes a bit to chaotic.
I am still new at this so I still learning new stuff
That is an army
I’m not understanding how to make a post in the looking for dm channel
do /looking-for-dm here or in any other channel you can type
there should be a form you can fill out
For the future or a note under your post if you like, preferred way to play is asking about what tools you're happy with. Voice chat, video, text only, Roll20, Foundry and so on.
Style's a bit more open. Do you prefer big narratives, character focused adventures, tactical dungeon crawling or something else? Imagine your ideal game. What are you looking for?
Oh ok ty
Hello! me and my friends are new do DnD and we are searching for a campaign for begginers (we are three and im going to be the DM if that matters)
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
If you feel like you have a good understanding of the Basic Rules, the next step is to find a game! You can get your search started on this server using the link in the bot post above.
i think i still have a few questions on the rules but, everything i need to know is on the players handbook right?
Yup, that should have everything you need to play. So do the free Basic Rules.
okay thanks
What is the difference between the free basic rules, SRD 5.2 and the players handbook. I just finished my first campaign and I want to learn a bit more about the game so I can create a new character for our next campaign. Im just a little confused on what I should buy or read up on.
The amount of content in each.
- The SRD is the barest bones document, and is missing a reasonable amount of rules minutiae.
- The Basic Rules has everything you need to play the game, but has limited options.
- The Player's Handbook has everything the Basic Rules has, but with extra spells, subclasses, backgrounds, and other player options
Our usual recommendation here is to start with the Basic Rules, since they're free and have everything necessary to play.
The Basic Rules contain all the material in the SRD plus some DM specific information that makes it easier to get started with the game iirc.
The SRD is basically the D&D blueprint, intended for 3rd party to be able to produce additional D&D content, so it's not quite so concerned with playability as the basic rules are.
I'd only ever really recommend the SRD to a player if they need to read the rules for free in another language. The Basic Rules are only available in English. Otherwise, the Basic Rules are far more useful than the SRD.
Is the layout of the players handbook on dnd beyond the same as the basic rules layout?
No, quite different. DDBeyond is optimized for digital view, the book is intended for ... well a book. They have different requirements.
The sequence and content is the same, the presentation is different.
so its just a digital version of the book you flip through cover to cover?
Scroll through more like
, but yes, essentially. Plus you get to use the additional PHB content in the DDBeyond character builder.
Do you own it? could you maybe send me a screenshot as a preview?
I don't own a physical copy of the 2024 PHB myself. I also don't think that sharing content like this would be seen favorably by the server owners.
But if you have a particular question about any particular content therein, I'm happy to answer.
the book defintily works nicer than the dnd beyond page
are you talking about physical PHB or the digital PHB. What i was trying to say was I want to know if the Digital PHB bought through DND Beyond has the same presentation layout as the basic rules on dnd beyond (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) before I buy it.
Ah I see. Actually, you can see the layout without owning it I think:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024
As you can see, pretty much the same.
Yes, all content on D&D beyond is presented this same way. The layout and navigation will be the same, just with more conent in certain sections
Significantly, the Player's Handbook also includes a lot of images not present in the Basic Rules
Ok that clears up the confusion I had, I was hesitant to buy it at first thinking it would just be a digital version of the physical book, but the basic rules layout is very nice and super easy to reference while playing online. Thank you guys for the help <3.
do you always start at level 1 with each new campaign?
no
even if it's a new character? or does your character carry over campaign to campaign?
it depends on where the DM wants you to start, most will go for level 3
characters don't typically carry over from campaign to campaign. If you want to reuse a character it's probably better for scenarios like one-shots.
gotcha. ty!
np
i may have just acidentally picked that up from stranger things lol. and i know rules in the 80s are not the same as rules now
in the #looking-for-community channel, most entries mention West Marches, what's that?
Westmarch is a style of play that commonly is run on a separate Discord server (or similar service). These types of games are run in the same universe and the events of one group of adventurers can impact those of another. Groups and DMs may change regularly. They're ideal for pick-up games or if you want to be part of a bigger, more interwoven narrative. Think of them a little bit like an "MMO" for tabletop games.
you can more or less rebuild a previous characters for new campaigns, but consider them completely new characters based on the previous one. they'd still rebuild from level 1 and start at whatever the DM says is the starting level for the new campaing, they wouldn't remember anything from the other campaigns
oh okay so it's like another word for living world/campaign?
More or less.
alright thanks
Hi! So I'm brand new to DND! I've played it only once before years ago. And recently my little brother asked me to DM a campaign hes wanting to do, I said yes. Does anyone have any advice or ideas on how to create a good and entertaining campaign?
Personally I'd say try a premade one-shot or module first.
Can someone help me d the numbers for my character :(( I'm to scared to ask my dm and the campaign is Tonight and when I asked him before he didn't even say anything about the numbers and nothing has changed and I'm so scared and I don't wanna be a bother
talk to your DM. At least in my experience, I'd rather have a player ask me for help than them showing up with an unfinished sheet because they didnt want to bother me before. We dont bite 😉
That’s weird but it all depends on the roll for starters?
Depends on the DM, and what level the DM wants to start the campaign at. Generally that seems to be level 3.
Where do I get help or guidance in making the character? In #character-discussion ?
Got it
That's the place. Here is for questions about basic rules or how the game is played.
Im so new I dont know what to do or how to do anything
?new
Hmm...
Ok. Because I have the character but I don’t know if It is impossible or not. Because I wasn’t balance on the game and for the DM
Can you explain what you mean? Was the character made using the rules of D&D, or is it just an idea that you have in your head and want to try and bring it over to this game?
Have you got it on D&D Beyond?
yes but rn my friends older brother is helping me
@dusky coyote , If you've not already, type
/looking
in this channel, pick the popup for what you're looking to do, fill in the form and away you go. Remember to include your regular availability and timezone. This is your chance to sell yourself to others so make the most of it. You only get one post a week, but it doesn't go until you send the form. Good luck!
Yo
We can say both but leaning more to the “an idea that you have in your head and wanted to try and bring it over to the game”
In that case, step 1 should be to read through the basic rules and ensure that you are following the proper procedure for making your character
Got it

what's a good one-shot for newbies (don't even know what a d20 is) with a satisfying beginning-middle-end, can be taught and run in maximum 3 hours, is fairly balanced between the three pillars of adventure (plus puzzles), is level 1, run with pre-generated characters, can accommodate anywhere from 3 to 8 players at the table, and is encapsulated without there needing to be a continuation?
Not sure if it has pregens, but otherwise Peril in Pinebrook should be a fairly good match from what I've heard
And it's free
hello
howdy. let us know if u have questions
Hihi !! I'm super new to dnd , I got inspired to play it by my dad and a few other campaigns(runs ?) I've seen on the internet or through shows

Hey guys I'm looking for a D&D guild/group to join, I'm a beginner but I can do character sheets and know how to use roll20 and D&D beyond, if anyone knows a guild that is recruiting players then give me a private message or on here is fine!

can't really look for groups in this channel but follow the steps presented by the bot to use the LFG channels
Thank you!
Feels like a pretty tall order! The aforementioned Peril in Pinebrook does a few of these, but I don't know if anyone has made something that ticks all those boxes.
Hey guys I have never played before but I’ve been watching legends of avantris and I’m super keen on learning to play ! Would anyone be willing to help me out ?

Hero Forge and Picrew are the go-tos. Or a video game with a character builder like Baldur's Gate 3 (though it doesn't have to be D&D, even).
Merci my friend
No... just pondering
what is usually the heath range for monsters in campaign at level 1
Pondering the orb
that depends on too many variables. singular? group? how high of AC? what difficulty level?
what is difficulty level

Hey folks please don't solicit or organize games in the normal discussion channels here as it's off-topic - we have Looking For Game channels for that.
See #find-a-game for information on how to use them
Of the four levels (Easy —> Deadly), what difficulty of encounter are you trying to make for your players?
In addition to those other factors, what Challenge Rating (CR) are you looking at?
Appoligies, Ill switch when i figure out what i'm supposed to do
This stuff is confuseing
Look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community - if you find a game you like, message the game poster or use the thread attached to their post to indicate interest.
Sorry bro I didn’t see a tab for that
Or use the bot commands /looking-for then select the dm option) to create a post in #looking-for-dm to tell folks you're looking for a group. The bot will give you a form to fill out and then when submitted it creates the post in that Looking For DM channel and attaches a thread to it.
Theres not many people here that help out new players tbh
Many groups are fine with new to D&D players - but it helps if said folks put in some of their own time and effort trying to learn the core game rules and mechanics and have a feel for how to create and use a character sheet.
Oh, Also one question, Is there a necromancer class or something?
Think of it this way - you don't show up to most games without trying to read up a bit on how the game works.
otherwsie you'll end up flailing around and the other players will get frustrated with spending their precious D&D game time having to help you out on everything.
Oh thanks
There is a necromancer subclass for the wizard class - but that's in the 2014 D&D 5e rules and hasn't been updated for the 2024 updates.
Is it still a thing i can use tho?
Good evening!
Yes - Fortunately the 2024 updates are forwards compatible meaning you can use 2014 materials in a 2024 material game with just minor tweaks.
Good afternooon!
Lots of necromancy based subclasses in general
Hi
There's also Death Domain Cleric, Oathbreaker Paladin, Spores Druid, Undead/Undying Warlock
hello hiii
im looking for a dm and its my first time playing... how can I find one here?

hi everyone
I'd say Grave Domain is much closer
where can i find people to talk to about how to DM with dndbeyond ?
I went to run Frozen Sick and there are no maps. Im am yelling at web pages here.
Grave Domains hate the undead actually.
Are you using the Maps VTT for D&DBeyond? If Maps isn’t working for you, try asking in #ddb-support
no. and why do people edit my question and then answer THAT question ?
this is worse than reddit.
I’m not sure what you mean
because you are answering your own question
Alright I’ll advise to not make slights if you’re asking for help
im asking for help in 1 area and then you are asking me if i need help in something else.. the answer is NO, i dont need help with what YOU think i mean, i need help with what I mean.
I really wish people would answer questions and not just answer for the sake of it
Would it be weird to have a multi class character as a beginner
Caps for rudeness will also not help. The adventure has maps already provided on D&DBeyond’s site, which you can view in the adventure’s page.
I suggest taking a step back and take a minute to view the adventure document instead of getting heated in the newcomers channel.
well i suggest you either answer someones question, or if you dont know, dont answer.
Not weird but not recommended. Multiclassing is one of the easiest ways to shoot your character in the foot if you don’t know what you’re doing.
