i just wanna wax poetry (or whatever that saying was) cos hell yeah thats fun (and also pretty good practise for me with writing in a fun way)
You can definitely do that, though you'd likely be describing things after rolling or it'll be hilarious when you describe an epic attack and miss with a nat 1 lol
Sometimes the DM might even ask you how you finish off a creature, giving you a chance to nicely describe the action 😎
thatd be hilarious
"WITH THE POWER OF THE OLD GOD FLOWING THROUGH MY VEINS, I CALL UPON YE TO GIVE ME STRENGTH AND CAST DOWN FIRE AND LIGHTNING AGAINST THE EVIL INFRONT OF ME"
nat 1
"Your character says this and slams their staff against the floor, only for the handle to snap in half and you get splinters in your hand, reducing your constitution by one while also feeling a tinge of embarrassment"
we had our first session last night! was a bit iffy due to all of us never playing, (spent nearly 3 hours on a character sheet) and outside of combat we were wondering if we roll to decide who does an action, for example in a tavern do we have to roll to decide who goes first like in combat? or is it just who ever speaks first gets to do their action, we’re all just a bit confused
Outside of combat you'd often just go by whoever has an idea of what they might wanna do, and shift the focus occasionally. There isn't a single correct way to do it, but rolling to see which order the players do things is a valid option
alright thank you!
If there’s things specific to your character that you want to be able to quickly reference, I usually jot down what page number I can find the answer on my character sheet.. as you become more comfortable you’ll reference less, but def have your book with you to use as needed
I think character creation is the hardest thing you’ll do. Now the fun starts.. there are some awesome resources on YouTube to look into that teach “D&D 101” - that’s how I learned in combo of reading the PHB.. feel free to DM me if you are interested in specific channels that I found helpful ✊🏼
will do cheers
If I dm how do I change the otherplayers hp and check their character sheet
assuming you play on DnD Beyond, you only can edit a character sheet if that sheet is in one your campaigns on the website
generally, you should leave the management of a sheet to the player if possible
I think your players should manage that, but understand the rules enough that if they need help when leveling up that you can guide them through it
Ok ty
You can also check their sheets too.. I’ve only played in person with people using pen/paper, so idk how feasible that is if playing online
i just finished dragons of storm wreck isle and i'm not sure where to go next with another campaign
like are there other premade ones? do you have to buy them? do you make your own campaigns?
Yes, many; not necessarily, free campaigns exist; absolutely you can write your own. For the last I recommend looking up the Five Room Dungeon method and putting three linked adventures together to give it a try.
thank you!!
hello! I wanna start playing dnd and I've convinced my friends too but the problem is that none of us know how to play it. i did my research but it's kinda overwhelming, would love if anyone could help out 😭
I think you might consider getting the new starter set
Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
And feel free to ask questions as you're learning and run into things
But yeah the new starter set is not a bad option either
I did consider it but it was too expensive for me
oh thanks!
in that case, the basic rules plus one of the many free starter adventures might be a good starting point
Yo so im new and I like the concept of DnD so what should I know about that isnt really talked more in tutorials?
Sorry but I literally have zero clue on the game 😔Just got interested cuz I saw an actor aka Jon Bernthal play it for like a short time
Some one shots can be strung together to create a campaign with you maybe filling in the narrative and time between locations.
oh nah its fine, but you mentioned some tutorials? what were they about? basic rules, character making, or worldbuilding?
Well I know about the dice and the dungeon master and how some class are like monks, bard and stuff....thats about it?
From what I see u make ur own characters and world?
have you checked out the links in the bot thats about to pop up?

Yes, however the DM builds the world and everyone else makes characters. There's a lot more classes, and you don't have to play as a human, there's a lot of stuff to make your character interesting, and depending on the campaign, it normally has a lot of roleplaying
so yes, you do build your own world, but normally the DM contributes way more to it.
So u make ur own power system, spell system, and monsters?
many create their own world, and many will use the world / lore created by the D&D world. but the players with guidance from the DM make their own chosing from dozens of races, 13 classes, and TONS of backgrounds to make the character you play in the story that you all tell together as a group
nope. power system and spell system are very well defined by the ruleset and are based on your class, with some classes being more matrtial without spells.
Alright alright thankyouu
check out the basics in the above bot. quick reads and explains a ton
the dm can do that, but they can use dnd books to make a campaign
Okay now I just gotta find people to play with me.Thank youu

Hey all, i am having an issue with Dnd Beyond, I have the 2014 player's handbook shared with me but i cannot select necromancer as my wizard subclass, anyone have any idea why that could be?
Check in with #ddb-support - but I'd check to make sure you're making that character inside the campaign where that content is being shared with you.
Are you making a 2014 wizard or 2024 wizard? You might’ve selected the 2024 wizard class when you created your character. 2024 doesn’t have access to the necromancer subclass
guys how to play dnd beyond?
D&D Beyond isn't a game; it's a platform to host your characters and any digital game content you've purchased!

New to D&D but sort of know general rules. Mostly having problems finding groups to play with ?
Like I've never really gotten to play a game before and get that sort of experience of authentic long term.
What advice for best results for finding a group ?

Heyy ppl
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Is there a place to ask if a character idea could work ? Like I got a rather weird idea for who I'd wish to be
Probably #character-discussion
i just got a computer and i kinda wanna learn how to play online where's a good place i can learn, i've only really played tabletop with a couple classmates
hi guysss
Hey any website reccomendations for online campaigns
So we can all see dice rolls etc
D&D Beyond works, there are virtual tabletops (VTTs) like Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, Foundry, others. Some folk use various Discord bots like Avrae or Dicemaiden.

my brain frys when it comes to reading game rules😭 ive always been a hands on/visual learner than a reader
same man
That's fine - but I'd recommend at least reading the first two chapters as they cover the core game rules/mechanics and game flow and how to make a character.
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
i see i see
Then I'd suggest practicing by making a character
We are as one.
oh thats nice, how do you create characters? ;-;
See chapter 2 of the free rules
ive made a character with the help of a freind i just need to learn the game ahaha
It goes through the process step by step
Then when you have a rough idea of the game, feel free to try and find a group to play with
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

You do improve your chances of finding a game when you're put some effort into learning the game - that way the group you play with won't have to use their precious game playing time having to teach you everything
i've made characters before just not online so is it basically the same premise different format or do i need to do something different
Well, there's ability checks (to do things), saving throws (to avoid things being done to you), combat (it can be combatative) and possibly spellcasting, if your character has the option.
No you should be fine although you may need to use the tools your group you play with choses to use.
i don't have a group yet unfortunately, my old one broke up bc i moved
No worries! You can check our Looking For Game channels for a game/group to join.
Read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use those channels.
ty noob
can anybody tell me where I can make my own characters or how? 😭
Hope everyone finds a great group to play with - a good D&D groups can be life changing in wonderful ways.
... but also trust your gut - if something doesn't feel right, remember no D&D is better than bad D&D
DnDBeyond is D&D's official digital toolset - you can access it on the web or with the mobile app and use it to make a character sheet
The free account allows you to make up to 6 characters but you'll be limited to what's available in the free rules unless you buy D&D books which provide more options.

Hey guys 👋 totally new here ive been watching a lot of dnd playthrough on YouTube its really fun to watch, but basically have zero knowledge xD
Check out what the bot above has to offer for a great start
Same. The closest I’ve gotten to dnd is divinity and Baldurs gate.lol
as I said to Hiroshi, check out the info in the bot just above Hiroshi's post

So uhh, I've got a question. I was able to create a character and have gone through the #learn-to-play channel a bit. Do I need to know any specifics about lore, like the lore of some races or anything?
Not particularly, general kind of lore on your race is a good idea, but for the most part it'll be down to your DM what your chatacter does and doesn't know
Alright, thanks!

How does the character sheet work, and how should I fill it in
there's a guide in the link that @echo kelp has said sent in their last message which has a guide on how to fill in the character sheet.

oh ok thank you very much

Hey so I’m somewhat new and how does fast should leveling up be like we’re playing with xp leveling and don”t know when’s a good time level up?
If youre playing with xp you just look at how much xp you get for resolving an encounter and how much you need gor the next level
Okay thank u!
Usually your DM would tell you how much XP/when to level up.
Technically you need to kill stuff for xp but this usually promotes killing anything in sight, consider granting xp for resolving combat without killing
although some DMs will give players XP for good rping
Okay that makes sense I was asking because my dm is also new because me and my friends wanted to play but we were all new!
Don't ask about levelling up too much, as DnD is meant to be more about the story you create and not gaining just gaining levels
If you dont ask at the end of the sessions are you even a real dnd player
A common alternative to XP is called milestones, where the dm decides when the players level up. This has the advantage of making things easier to keep track of and making level ups more thematic, if less rewarding.
I will suggest this thank u
Hey I’m still pretty new but I’m torn between two races Yuan Ti and Hadozee I’m playing a Monk and was wondering does one of these feel more subtle or easier to play than the other, or like do the races really matter that much for how the class plays, or is it mostly just flavor?
If they don't have features that interact with your class and intended actions, pick which you like.
I just downloaded the game now and I don't know what to do
You…downloaded DnD?

Many folks are very open to new folks. Keep in mind it does take patience as there are MANY more players than DMs
okay!
how do you decide what feat to take??
even just looking at the handful of options in the Core (non-2014) pool, I'm having a hard time deciding
I'm leaning towards Alert, but +2 to initiative sounds less appealing than the earlier +5
There is a lot to go through and you kind of have to play around with what's available and what do you have in mind? What stat do you think you would like, is there a synergy you're looking for, etc.
For me when I am making a character I have a "picture" in mind and I look to see what would fulfill that. I know for my first sorcerer, he's a kobold draconic sorcerer subclass, and I want him to be tanky since sorcerers have lower hit points and ACs. So I took the tough feat and focused on building up his fire damage and HP mostly.
What do you have so far?
So far I've got a Lv. 4 Goliath Paladin (Defense, Oath of Devotion)
My other party members are a sorcerer and a... roguey bard? So I'm trying to walk a line of being tanky but having some pocket heals to toss out.
I figure Alert so I can get up into combat early, try and draw some aggro, but I feel like taking Elemental Adept might help with lightning damage, or there's a lot of good utility options in the Magic Initiate trees.
Elemental Adept is very good if you're trying to utilize your magic casting.
Suppose it just comes down to how much -1 vs. +1 to initiative is valuable
Well Dex should take priority of Initiative in my opinion.
If you're worry is that you won't go first, then feats that increase your dex would be the route based on your context above.
a lot of the time, unless you want a feat for fun it is better to take the stats.
ohhh so you're saying if I want to boost my initiative, I should try to raise Dex instead of taking something like Alert
yeah I'm beginning to lean Elemental Adept now. I didn't notice before that it raised my Charisma up to the next breakpoint
Dex involves a lot of your acrobatics and "fast moving" checks
As well as your initiatives. Elemental Adept is great because you basically get to boost your spellcasting (usually Int. Wisdom, or Charisma) by 1 and you pick an element of your choice to treat any 1 rolls as a 2 for damage, and you ignore resistance to that chosen type.
For my draconic sorcerer kobold, I choose Charisma Score increase with fire, so even against enemies that have fire resistance, my fire damage ignores that resistance
So if I land the shot, I do full damage based on my roll.
yeah this might be the way to go. boosts my heals and improves my DPS output as well
What's your spellcasting ability as a Paladin?
Charisma, same for my heals, and this puts me up to the +4 breakpoint
I'm at +4 as well. I think since you're early on, if you level up and get an ASI (Ability Score Increase), try to get that Charisma to a 20.
It'll help you in the long run and you have good output early game.

I didn't know this and I'm 4 levels away from my next ASI, stuck at 19 charisma 😭
So right now my stats are
STR 12
DEX 8
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 14
CHA 17
I could ASI now and go CHA 19, but everything else is in a rough spot I feel like, breakpoint wise.
just downloaded D&D online, got a few questions.
- Probably gonna join my schools D&D club so should I keep my solo character separet or use the same one
- cant decide between cleric or bard
im new so idk anything lol
what do you mean by solo character?
- Keep the character just in case they fit with the setting, but be prepared to change things or make a new one.
- Do you wanna be stronger in or out of combat?
And I assume solo character means a character not for a campaign that you made yourself
or by chance do you mean like, Dungeons & Dragons Online, the MMORPG?
yes, are there other versions?
Most likely your school's D&D club will be based on the Dugneons & Dragons tabletop game, not the video game.
I would say check out some D&D gameplay online (Dimension20, Critical Role, etc.). There are lots of people that upload their D&D gameplay on youtube. This will help you get a feel for what you're looking for.
Once you're ready to make a character, I'd suggest using D&D Beyond. You can make a few characters using the Core ruleset with a free account.
You are still free to check out the MMO you downloaded if you'd like! Though it's unlikely to be relevant to your school's D&D Club.
Cool, I assumed that they would be using the tabletop version, I just wanted to get some practice in before I joined. Just to get a feel of the game, but i will be looking at some D&D vids, thx
For sure! Critical Role Abrigdged might be a good place to start. They cut down a lot of the "fluff" of the episodes and mostly cover the important things. Takes a 4-5 hour session down to a 1-2 hours video.
Hello I m totally new as well just starting watching some dnd gameplay online and I instantly fell I. Love with it !!!
Is there a place where I can play VTT DnD and will accept newcomers like myself ?
#find-a-game would be a good place to start
hey I'm using beyond and I'm trying to add cantrips and it wont let me
im making a barbarian sage character
Go to backgrounds, you should be able to select it there
thatll do it
Welp I just dm’d my first ever dnd oneshot (peril in pinebrook) and went about as expected, forgot to mention important details, everyone tried arguing small things that made my life hard, players all split up, forgot to take notes of character details, developed a speech impediment mid game, and accidentally gave the dragon mother a Boston accent 🤦♂️. I also didn’t know how to end it lol. but overall things won’t go as expected and expect that. 10/10 will try playing again
anyways learn from my mistakes
-talk about rule 0 at the beginning
-take notes
-practice character voices if your doing them
First time jitters does that, but i bet you did amazing otherwise
Im running my first campaign and its a long term one. Im currently sitting tgrough hours of YT about world building and voice acting 🥲
Aside from that, its probably the best decision i made
So I have never played dnd before, online or IRL. I've always wanted to but never knew where to start. Looking for some info to try to join a virtual game, any advice would be greatly welcomed.

rulebook has everything u need to know about the charachter sheets
I see
I’m so excited to learn this game it seems like so much fun, although I don’t know anyone that would want to play so idk how that’s gonna work
who cares
the most fun part is learnng the game
Once you do that, you can find an online game to play
Online game like in here or like somewhere else?
people have games they post
they want players and u could be that

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Oh thanks

Which rule book i should download 2014 or new one?
Up to you
I like the 2024 rules, but I know some that prefer 2014.
All the new content is gonna be 2024 tho so I recommend that
It’s also the default on dnd beyond
Ok
Hey I’m just wondering would I need a pc to play on a campaign I only have an iPad which is what I do my character sheet and notes and everything on
Nope
It’s better to have one, but it’s definitely not needed.
Tysm
So we are gonna be on a call but gonna use online dice
Heck, I’ve played on ones on my phone.
Don’t do that, unless it’s purely text based
Not fun
Well it was fun, but it was more difficulty than it was worth
Is it typically like a discord vc that we play and the dm like screen shares the board and everything
Yep but on WhatsApp
It’s commonly discord call + a virtual tabletop
Okay tysm
So the people I am playing with are not that smart, so we'all are gonna have a simple game at first
And when we will get used to it then we will shift to complex foemat
You might find https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure a good starting point.
Sry I was reading the post, thank you for this guide
I’m a new dm and my friend also a new player wants to be a undead summoner what class would be best for them on the 2024 phb
im actually a new player and a nercromancer too
my dm said wizard is the best for new players
and me personally i took sage background
I don’t see necromamcer on the phb should I just search it up
It’s not in the 2024 PHB
yes my dm said its not in it but i can be like a necromancer not exactly one
I see so did you go with necromancer subclass or not exactly
i will be finishing my full character tonight
yesterday i did a campaign that was an easy one meant to get us know the game
it was with 6 new players
If i wanna do a paladin character that was expelled from the order for having different faith but still living in the ways of the paladin, following their code of honor and compassion for humanity and nature which class would be best suited? Like i don't wanna do oath breaker paladin (also I'm really new to all this)
I think you can spin any oath to do this
And yeah oathbreaker doesn’t fit here
Cuz from this they didn’t break anything, let alone for evil
I see, like i don't wanna do the lawfully good paladin.
You can be any alignment you want as a Paladin
Except oathbreaker no? Don’t they have text that says they have to be evil?
Yeah
Apart from them, yeah, I second this
Maybe Glory Paladin actually, more focused on what the self is about
Ehh, I’m sure there’s a way
Alr thankyou! For the info
Guys how long does a game last? Like on average? Or does it depend on the situation?
Entirely depends on the situation
A one-shot might last 1 to 3 sessions, campaign could take year or more
and the group.
Usually you might expect a session to be about 2-4 hours whereas a one-shot is typically around 6-8 hours
How do I clam my reward for joining the discord?
There's a reward?
Yes it’s called light aura
Ahh then I think I need to reconsider playing this right now
Wait what?
If u go into game and click on rewards it will say join discord for this reward
Damn I want to play so bad but ahh, got no time and friends to play with
Wait what game is this
And why is this game linking to this server instead of the official game discord
Huh? This is confusing
Referring to this
You mention a game. What game?
ah right, yea, I got no clue either
Me neither
I joined a server that pings me for info about new quests but I've never received one about joining servers
hello i was wondering are there any free ways to find info about character creation?
im new to dnd so idk
The basic rules are free, and include rules for character creation. Any additional content will need to bought though, so you're limited in options (See #learn-to-play )
D&D beyond also has a character creator that lets you make a character within these rules, which is very useful to get hang of making them!
ty
good now another question i am trying to make a support character
which class could i pick?
I'd say basically any spellcaster is a good choise. They get the most supportive options with variety of spells
But Cleric, Paladin or Bard would be my suggestion, depending on the type of support
ok basicaly im trying to buff my allies debuff my enemies and some heals
while i do little damage
Well there's Bless and Bane -spells which do just that. Bards get bardic inspiration that helps allies with their rolls, and basically all of the classes I mentioned have access to Cure Wounds or Healing Word, the most basic heal spells 😛
ok i see then i will check out spellcaster
i played homebrew once before but i knew 90% of the rules were ignored
i played a warlock with an homebrew ability that buffed an allie attack up to 2x factor depending on the role
i had perma -50% attack
but i had no variety
so thanks for helping
also before i deep dive thoes wizard work as a support?
you said any spellcaster
Wizards are one spellcaster that doesnt really do healing, but they still get plenty of useful spells. And spells are gonna have the biggest effect as a support, especially the kind that you mentioned where you would be buffing / debuffing others, so picking spells that do that is likely gonna be the best way to go, without looking into specific subclasses that may home more supportive options
ok wizard it is buffing debuffing is my favourite thing
are there any race restrictions on classes?
i just got DND to play with my family today, we don’t know how to play it.
I’m the dragon master and i’m reading the first adventure ( the vanishing gnome ) i’ve spent 3 hours reading the first page and still only understand it the smallest bit.
we plan on playing tonight and i need help ASAP to help me understand how to play the game.
please DM me 🙏
Nope, any race can be of any class, and there are very little issues with any combo 😎
Also, for some spefici spells you might enjoy for a wizard
- Mind Sliver, a cantrip that deals damage and the next saving throw the target makes is reduced
- Cause Fear and Charm Person, spells which fear or charm the target
- Feather Fall, probably the best known supportive spell, which saves people from fall damage
- Ray of Sickness, poisons targets which makes them worse at their rolls, basically
- Silvery Barbs, bit of an infamous but strong one to reroll rolls and buff an ally while at it
But yeah, wizards dont actually get many of the spells I first imagined from buffing/debuffing, like Guidance, Bless or Bane, which are more Cleric things, but again most support isn't gonna be jus tdirect "bigger / lower bumbers" -buffs/debuffs, but more active effects like blocking vision or better positioning, and with some imagination wizards do get plenty of those!
nice
seem enjoyable
also going for elf wizard
so i read the free rules and saw a video at the same time to help me
and basicaly in the video i saw some elf stuff that wasn't in the free rules but in the book (e.g. some + points in the stats) what do i do now?
like i saw the stuff with fey ancestory and so on
but the guy on the video also said some negative stuff about the characters and he got like +2 dexterity
Fey Ancestry is one of the racial features of elves, should be on their page when you look at the race
By default elves get +2 to Dexterity, and the other +1 to another stat based on the subrace, but if you've got Tasha's book (or the DM just allows it) you can put those bonuses into any abilities you like
It's one of the limiting things of races, but most people do ignore it for the Tasha's rule 😛
ehm where is it writen for + 2 dexterity?
Where are you viewing it? usually its like the topmost thing on the list
The +2 to dex and +1 to other is 2014 rules. most games have migrated to 2024 where that is not the case. if you are on D&D Beyond using the free rules, they are 2024
your background now gives you the +'s to stats (the BIGGEST dissappointing change in 2024)
free rules link in #learn-to-play
and then i went to elf
Ah, you're using the new edition
as I said, that is using 2024 rules where races no longer get bonuses to attributes
ah i see
Cant help much with that I'm afraid, but seems Fey Ancestry is mentioned there at least
i guess from now on i just read the stuff there
yes Fey Ancestory is still there. as you build a character, you will choose a background that will boost some attributes
also it has a defective link in it
if you look for more videos, ( I hadnt even thought of this) you will need to put 2024 rules in the search too
the video i got reccomended was 2014 rules
but apparently there arent any free links
which can still be played if you buy books or get into a campaign that share the old books
no there are not
or get into a campaign that share the old books
or that but haven't the time to play currently
its basicaly my only day off today
so i ask my DM first
also thanks for the help
Guys if something says it has a resistance to something, is that immunity or a modifier?
Like awakened bush is immune to piercing damage, so can it not be damaged by something that pierces or does it just take far less damage or does a piercing hit have a disadvantage etc?
Immunity to piercing damage, means they take no piercing damage.
Resistance is different where you take half damage.
Ahh ok thanks ^^
also resistance and vulnerability cancel each other out, but if something has immunity, gaining vulnerability to that damage type does nothing. its still immune
that too
could someone tell me where the link to standard array/ point buy etc is
I just cant navigate the beyond website frfr
thx :)))
does anyone know of a fix for this. My party plays using the dnd mobile app. My problem is on dndbeyond website i made a homebrew weapon abilities the whole 9. on web browser it works as intended. if you run the mobile app it lists the name of abilities/spells the weapon gives. but whereas the web browser you would click on it and it would go into the description of the ability/spell and list damage. the mobile app wont show that so all you see is the name. am i really going to have to make every ability individually and add it to their character that way so it works on the mobile app.
Probably better to ask in #ddb-support
roger
Hello
Have you ever homebrewed loot such as weapons? And if so, how?
Howdy. Let us know if u have questions
Hi there
yo!
Heyo
Bump up a damage die to the next size. Combine features in a new way. If it's especially different, maybe require some training for it.
how do you find beginner friendly campaigns or one shots?
What training? For weapon mastery?
Well hello all,
I have a question, so if someone is very beginner and wants to know how dnd is played what would be your advice, or any tutorial or any youtube video recommendation for it. How to learn dnd

First bot has great basic intro info bot 2 has ways to find a group
Sure, nothing strenuous, just something to reflect a character is using a brand new weapon and has to get used to it. More for #dm-discussion or #homebrew than newcomers, though.
Thank you
quick question i was looking at wizard stats
what does D6 per wizard level mean i know what a D6 is but what does it mean per wizard level?
is it just level or something else?
You're probably looking at hit dice. At a level up, a wizard can take the average of a d6 or roll a d6 to add to their HP total. They also get a new d6 to their hit dice pool for short rests.
your max HP increases by 1d6 (plus Constitution modifier) per wizard level
you can take the average roll of a d6 (rounded up, its 4) instead of rolling the die on level up
i see but then do i just write d6? or does it increasy by 1d6 per level?
or every level i just roll d6 for health?
At level 2, a wizard has 2d6 hit dice to use to recover HP during a short rest.
And yes, each level you can roll a d6 to add to your HP or take the average.
ok in that case i write nd6 where n = level
For hit dice to spend, yep.
I'd agree on both counts! But it will click with enough time and practice.
ehm another question
it sais in table i get +2 proficiency at level 1
which one exactly?
No, that's your proficiency bonus. You add it to the skills and savings throws you are proficient in.
So you add your proficiency bonus and stat modifier to get the total. A wizard at level 1 has a +2 proficiency bonus. Say they have a 16 INT. Their INT saving throw bonus would be +5.
Same for any INT skills they're proficient in.
Say they have a 16 INT. That's a +3 bonus. So it applies to all INT skills.
Also the INT saving throw.
ah it comes from stat so for every 5 + 1 stat?
Every stat has a bonus depending on the score (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers). So a 16 INT is a +3 bonus. See the chart for the full breakdown.
oh i see
im currently just watching wizard stuff and creating a word document with abilities
The rules are the best way to understand how the game works!
can see that
its my first serious campain after all
last one was homebrew and with like 90% rules ignored
guys I have created my first character 💔
I cant wait to play ngl. Its been so hard finding a group heh
Hey can someone help me in dnd discussion or dm me with my story and universe
Cast your net wide if you're only looking here. And be flexible! The more specific your parameters, the harder it can be to find a game/group.
is evoker the only sub class for wizard?
The only one available with the free rules.
I just had an impulse to find a dnd group cause I’ve never played but I have a really good character idea that plays off who I am in real life so lmk any advice on finding a party

Bet, gonna be fun once I find a game cause I think my idea is genius and meant for me lol
Hi all - first time trying to play a real game of DnD! I just created a human warlock character and i'll be joining a friend's campain the next time they play. 🙂 excited!
I have a question about hit points.
Last night, a PC was knocked out (0 HP, no death saves) and dragged to a cultist lair. There one of the party tried to sneak in and rescue them. Upon being discovered, the cultist ran to the KO'ed player, holding a knife to their throat and said "Don't move, or they're done for!"
All of this happened in initiative order.
Hypothetically, if the unconscious player was fully healed, and the cultist went for the kill on their turn, well, they would still have to roll say 1d4+DEX.
How does like, slicing a PC's throat, not just one-shot them?
(Sorry if that's confusingly written, it's early for me lol)
Cuz DnD is weird like that and 5e doesn’t have execution rules
Is there a big difference between paid DnD games and free ones? I’m new and for looking the best experience?
Paid games usually have a bit more effort put into them and they’re faster to get into
Tbh I’ve never played a paid game so I can’t say 100%
I see, I’ve played 2 games in the past, both only had one session before it fizzled out unfortunately
No guarantees, of course, but in theory no one should flake in a paid game.
That’s fair
Okaaaaay..... but somehow this has to make sense in the RP right? Like, the PCs aren't just like "ah, damn, rules, sorry." Y'know?
My best guess is that it misses I vital artery
Cuz if they’re at 0, it starts death saves already
And they’re one fail off of death
If the target is unconscious and they're attacking within 5 feet like that, hitting does make it an automatic crit
That's not what I was asking tho, like
I'm saying the automatic crit is how d&d represents that kind of deadly blow
Plus, if that attack hits hard enough, the PC instantly dies
The PC was put into a critical (unconscious, 0HP) position, cultist puts knife to their throat, then PC is healed to full before cultist strikes.
If the cultist has the knife to their throat, how does the RP work around such a sensitive attack being non-lethal?
You can justify it by whatever makes the most sense to you. The cultist stabs them, but they're tough enough that it's not an automatic kill; the cultist is bad at their job; magic, etc etc
Adventurers are tougher than normal people
The cultist still has to roll to hit to get through their armor class, so even having an unconscious person isn't an automatic hit either
gotcha, gotcha. So the DM can just work some like, "You flash back to life, inspired by the mercy of your protector god, and as the Cultist strikes you, you temporarily feel your neck harden into stone" type beat?
yeah you gotta come up with narrative excuses to justify rules weirdness
Sure, if that makes more sense to you
I think the DM usually does it but I don’t remember
My games don't need that kind of justification for rules, so we don't
maybe the the cultist's hand is shaky and they miss the vital part
They would get stabbed if the cultist hits, it would do X amount of damage and if they're not dead, they're not dead
Good evening, I apologize for my English as I'm French... I hope you won't hold it against me... I bought a starter set to try role-playing with my friends... While reading the rules to prepare for my very first DM session, I'm having trouble remembering everything... Are there certain rules I should focus on more to get started, and if so, which ones?
I'm personally very keen on having that movie play in my head. that sounds dreadfully mechanical
Like I said, whatever works for people
My groups aren't generally that interested in RPing combat mechanics so we don't
We RP character stuff instead
Skill checks and combat rules are probably the most important, plus anything else you’re struggling to remember
Rp doesnt end with combat for me. its all RP
Conditions might be one…
Ok thanks
Cool, as I said, whatever works for you
Preference
It's not meant as a judgment
Just that people can deal with it however works for them
If you want to create RP reasons for rules stuff, do. If you don't, it's not required
You can still RP your character during combat without needing an in universe RP explanation for all the mechanics
Unless that's something which makes the game more fun for you
Hello! I have never played D&D and I am thinking of buying the player handbook 2024 just to read it.Do you think it is worth buying it just to read if I don’t have friends to play with?
Its great to have if youre ever planning on playing, not sure about getting it just for reading material though
In the end it is still a game manual after all
Hey I'm just getting back into being a DM and it looks like we're gonna be using a website called Roll20. (My first time using the site)
I'm watching tutorials for the site so I can launch a longterm homebrew game.
Just one question
"How can I keep the party on track but also not afraid to go on silly side-quest/talk too other npc's who dont play a major role in the story?"
Probably a better discussion for #dm-discussion but you can always have the silly npc/story line link back to the main story
Thank you @lean vortex I'll ask there with further questions, and that suggestion does work ^-^
Might be a dumb question but I'm guessing LFG Community may be the wrong place to post, but if I'm a player looking for a specific game such as a murder mystery and/or PBP is there a specific place to post that to see if there are groups out there?
Type /looking-for dm and it'll pop up a form that you can fill out your preferences in
Ahhhh that's what it is, ok thank you!
Hey ya'll! Anyone needing a player?
I'm new and would love to meet new people and start an adventure with a group!
Hey!! Is there anyone who needs a player?
I’m a beginner but i would really like to start an adventure with a new group.
What's up Elvin! I'm a new player as well. Maybe we can find a DM and some other new adventurers!
Maybe
Both of yall read #find-a-game

there are some basics to review spooderman
How do I get wayfarer and sailor background options on the dnd beyond character creator? I had originally enabled only core roles
Ok what are they
Read the Free Basic Rules (first two chapters) found in the channel linked by the bot post above. There are a fair few good resources there too
Ok
I consider how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat the basics
gotta buy the Players Handbook
You can actually read all the rules on dnd beyond don’t buy anything unnecessary
You can download it on AppStore
And you can also create your charackter on there which is pretty awesome
Thanks. I’ll look for the app
I just use the website personally
When I make my character who do I tell and do I have to make a physical piece?
And can we play games online
Yes
When you make a character you usually either tell your dungeon master, send it here to get it reviewed, or keep it to yourself
Who’s my dungeon master?
hello
When you create your charackter on dnd beyond you don’t really necessarily need anything physical there’s everything on there, charackter sheets and even dices wich is pretty nice
Be the Dungeon Master you want to see in the world
I'm looking to get into D&D for the first time, where do I start?
goes hard not gonna lie
Start by reading the rules

But who’s my dungeon master?
barely read the players handbook, improvise, realize you are doing or taking too much damage, then read again
There's a Dungeon Master in all of us
You'll find one once youve found a group
The one who will control the story, your group will pobably choose who it is
There’s a website where I make my character?
Yess
The dungeon master is the person who guides the players through an adventure and decides what rules are in effect and what dice rolls are needed and interprets the results - and basically guides the story.
Dnd beyond but you need a doungeon master first, because he has to approve your charackter
DnDBeyond has a free tier that allows you to make up to 6 characters.
It’s the official D&D digital toolset
You can make one for practice, I recommend it
Well I wna my make my character so where can I get a dungeon master
You can look through the game postings in #looking-for-players - that’s dungeon masters looking for players
You don't need a DM to make a character, though when you get into a game the DM will need to approve them
See #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels.
I’ll make one just to see how it works
you can play your own campaign for all i know nobody stopping you
if you play your own campaign are you favoring the master role or the player role
good personality test that one
D&D isn't built for solo play
There are some fanmade conversions, but it doesn't emulate the experience of an actual table 100% accurately
Ok so I got the app but still don’t see the options for the wayfarer does it even really matter? I have the 2024 handbook I bought at a bookstore how do I like connect it to my account? On dndbeyond
Physical books are a separate product than buying the book on DnDBeyond (the dndbeyond book can be used directly in the dndbeyond character sheet).
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
You could potentially use the DnDBeyond homebrew tools to recreate the things you own in a physical book for your peersonal use (don't publish it)
Ok so using homebrew will work thanks I’ll look into that
Cuz I got the book but I’m not a pen and paper kind of guy
is there any games for now?
Check the Looking For Game channels - see #find-a-game to learn how to use them
Please don't solicit or organize games outside of the LFG channels as it's off-topic.
Hei, what are you favorit class? And spill the reason
monk cuz bonk
human fighter
Rogue because I like utility
would wizard be great for greymon 2010 cause mega flames a long ranged attack or is dragon born better cause i can't find dragon born
I got into dnd a few days ago, and today I made my first dnd oc.. ( i was usually planning to learn as a DM, but this works too! )
Druid & bard. Not even a reason, I just fell in love

elf wizard. Because it's elvish and wizardly
hii
Hi all. If you have questions let us know
might be good to ask about character builds in #character-discussion
hello i want to play dnd with my friends but we dont know where or how to start learning about the rules and characters what do you recomend ??/
do you guys have a dm candidate?
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
This
Read the first two chapters, more depending on circumstances
if absolutely none of you know what you're doing, it might be a great opportunity to pick up the physical Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set. or you can each check out the free online rules that nugget mentioned.
thank you verry much :))
Hi, Im new here
never played before but always wanted to, would anybody be able possibly help me out a lil
well, how much do you know so far?
well have a dice set, I have a backstory for a character I had in mind, im figuring out how to fill out my character sheet, but tbh I feel like my best way I could learn is finding a party yk, I js have no idea how to find one
im looking for a party who is willing to help me out
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

well the bot made the best advice we can give, but yeah creating a character can be overwhelming, don't worry though we can help and so would your future party
man the campaign I was invited to they just decided not to do it anymore i was excited to play
hey am i alright to draw my character, since im new to this
yes
Yeah feel free to draw your own character, use hero forge or similar tool, etc.
hero forge?
its encouraged to draw characters instead of using some AI image generator.
hero forge is a tool to make miniatures
oh i have an art software and drawing my own guy, since ime literally new i wont give him the acceories since im a rouge
nice. i drew a character i was playing in pencil crayon. ha.
Just got back into DND about 2 weeks ago. Very therapeutic
i just there were people close by me to be able to play
I’m in the middle of writing/designing my first character and im a little concerned that them being on the soft spoken/tactful side wouldn’t offer a lot for rp especially if mine isn’t the only character like that? they’re a druid heavily themed around darkness
you mean like, their pragmatic nature or their schematic doesn't offer rp value?
it certainly does, you'll have a lot of fun planning routes and staying in character while telling people what you think they should do
having 2 close minded characters is not bad at all, especially reasonable ones as you mention
Should be fine, Druid generally doesn't have the best CHA anyway so it shouldn't hamper you all that much if you're not the party face
Basically, lets use a gun as an analogy
Cantrips are your regular bullets. You can shoot as many as you want
Spell slots are special "shells" that you can load with "prepared spells" of your choice.
best analogy evar
At level one, you only have two of these shells, and can stuff them with your choice of four types of "ammo",
OHHH
The gun analogy strikes againnn (second fav dnd analogy)
so like it says "bless cure wounds detect evil and good detect poison and disease guiding bolt and healing word" i can pick only 2 from there and keep them
until i level up i guess where i get more slots
whats first
can i hear it or do i need to ask a question for it that sounds enticing
The tomato analogy
Strength is crushing a tomato
Dexterity is dodging a tomato
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato
Intelligence is knowing tomatoes are a fruit
Wisdom is knowing not to put it into a fruit salad
Charisma is being able to sell a fruit salad that contains tomato
Peak i know
constitution is kinda like endurance right
Vitality and endurance, sure
i see
the dm is a tomato crusher the player's protect the tomato from the dm
wait and cantrips i can use the 3 that come right
yes
i dont need to pick and choose unlike slots
Oh no you still do need to choose
how many it doesnt say
Also is "slots" referring to spell slots, or knowing a prepared spell
slots as in the ones i can only pick 2 right now because im level 1
oh cool theres only 3 cantrips so i guess im set
i thought it was twice per rest
Those don't count towards you total btw
do i unlock more later to pick from
You get three cantrips, 4 spells, and the ability to cast one of those 4 spells twice a day.
ANd yes
So you could, say, cast shield and magic missile, but then you would have to wait for another long rest
oh wait so the cantrips dont have a cooldown but 1st level thingies do
i get it now my huge appreciation
man this game can be complex
or maybe i just need to read (scary)
its hard at first but it gets easuer
A lot of it is reading
also i like your bio its the lyrics to lemon tree
i used to listen to that song all the time as a kid
unless its a coincidence
Its the lyrics, thats intentional
great
Any more questions?
yyyes just one more
at the bottom of the options thingy it just says " * domain spell (life domain)"
does that mean like what my guy specializes in or something
Ah, those are free prepared spells. And yes!
Your guy specialises in healing, so he learns some healing spells for free
Don't say that to his face, he'll bash ya
okay im gonna read what any of the spells actually do but i now know how it works i suppose
no he wouldnt he likes being civil and strenghthening community or however you spell that english isnt my thing
Oh thats wholesome
yes although hes greedy so he haggles but hes lawfully good
okay well thank you so much for your help you explained it so eeasily with A GUN
If it works it works
oh hello lol i typed in the wrong chat but im new and cant wait to meet everyone
Hallooo
Hihi
hi im new
Hi new I’m Nugget
I haven't made a character yet. It looks like a lot 😐
hi
me too
stranger things sucks
@blissful obsidian @final nova there are farrr too many newbies coming in for us to one on one teach all of them. However
Read up on the first two chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
imma self indulge myself in tons of content dont worry
It's not one on one it's one on two
Me and snapple
That’s even harder lol
Just ask any questions you see when you’re reading
@hearty blaze
Hi
I don’t understand the question
You did the demo?
Didn’t know that was what it was called
Oh
I had to take a moment to remember haha
But yeah the demo does a decent job of previewing what the actual game is like
I'm clercic
Cleric's a fun class
Hi clercic, I’m Nugget
P
And yeah clerics fun. My third favourite
What ur fav
Monk! Then bard. Then cleric
Ohhhh
i think orcs look the coolest
They were not in the preview
always used orc in TES
The demo doesn't have all the options available
Yes
Yup
Try DnD beyond
D&DBeyond has a character creator with the Basic Rules integrated
Ok thnks
Try making a practice character while reading through the first 2 chapters
Of this or the guide?
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
When there is a session before making our character the dm tels us the theme
Ah session 0.
Or can we use one character for every session
Unless they kick the bucket
Oh
I ment campaign too
So like if a make a guy for a campaign can I use him for a new campaign
Sure, but don't expect any progress to carry over. Consider character transfers between campaigns to be like a full reset.
Ohkkk
huh
Hi
hello!
Help, I have come up with a bunch of character concepts and I'm concerned that I love casters too much. All of them are full casters unless you count the double gish multiclass valour bard/hexblade warlock
wha-?
Not a problem imo - but if you want feedback on any of your characters check with the folks in #character-discussion
oh- that's where I might head to
This channel is more for helping new to D&D folks get help getting started
hi do yall actually play dnd together? like do you make arrangements to play?
Could a character like an arcane trickster use some type of illusion to make their blades appear way shorter than they are so when they attack it looks like they are just out of range but still able to hit? And if so how would that be played out?
There isn't really anything in the rules that allows you to do that but if u have a character that has an ability to alow them to hit more easily then you could say that's how they are doing it
Im new too but from what ive been reading, local game stores (especially tabletop places) host ttrpg sessions, also through discords and online forums, friends, family, partners, you could even find paid services online where you can rent a DM and join a group with their other customers and you could all be beginners etc.
In the UK we have actual cool little businesses that you can go to in person like Arcadiagames where they teach you how to play and you can play with them
ok cool thank you, can you explain how this bald man thing works??
no like the 2 events happening?
Oo oops I thought minor illusion or something could do it but you’re right! Sorry

Do you have a link? I don’t see anything you could be referring to?
They’re a 3rd Party organization partnered with Wizards of the Coast (D&D’s owner) that hosts virtual games to help newbies learn & play the game
This is a 3rd party, they have their own discord for you to make enquiries about their event in, this discord is just the general official d&d discord I think
ok cool sorry i saw it and it looked cool! but thank yall so mutch i really do appreciate it
Hey no need for apologies, like I said Im new too but ill try help with what I can if you need
be safe and have fun!
ok cool thank you so mutch, but is there, like anyone that has a open spot for a new person or someone that wants to start an adventure?
because i am just looking for a group to play with?
If you’d like to use this server to find a game, the instructions are in #find-a-game !
thank you!!
i'm in a server and there was just a massive timeskip and i went from a level 6 wizard to level 20, and there are so many spells and i had no idea that wizard was this complicated, i'm thinking i should make a new character who's a cleric but i dont know what class to pick, i dont want something that's barely complicated but i dont want something too complicated

If werewolves get stronger the more they're in moonlight would casting invisibility on one make them human, make them just invisible, or since now they have more moonlight touching their body would they become a ton more powerful?
Invisible. Spells do what they say.
Well yeah of course the werewolf is still invisible in all three solutions, just are they more than just invisible?
is a false hydra really that bad?
It’s not an official monster so whatever homebrew statblock a DM decides to use for it will determine how much of a threat it is
That being said, its a homebrew monster that requires a specific kind of buy-in and a specific kind of party to work well. Even knowing what a false hydra is can ruin a lot of the surprise of an adventure revolving around one
It's kind of "bad" in a way that while it is famous for being made for D&D, the game itself doesn't really offer much tools to properly run one, without the players kinda having to resort to metagaming to beat it
If you really want to wrinkle your noodle on it, this is what the spell moonbeam does:
"A shapechanger makes its saving throw with disadvantage. If it fails, it also instantly reverts to its original form and can’t assume a different form until it leaves the spell’s light."
It's become a well known and popular thing, so it's pretty easy to realize what's going on nowadays, and once you know what you're fighting (either through knowing about it, or learning it in the adventure), you'll always know its gimmick as a player, so either you metagame, or roleplay ignorant until something allows you to actually fight. Can work, but like said it will require a group thats more into deep roleplay than wanting to just fight one. Basically it's not so much a fight, than a mystery and roleplay prompt
Again spells only do what they say they do. Nothing more and nothing less. The invisibility spell would only give the werewolf the invisible condition.
Ditto for monster statblocks. Werewolves don’t get stronger in moonlight rules as written, so somehow increasing the amount of moonlight on them wouldn’t do anything anyways

We have too many folks joining each day to teach one-on-one. The opening two parts of the rules linked above ("Playing the Game" and "Character Creation") and #learn-to-play are good to check out first!
Just a quick question it might be dumb but can I learn to play from the mobile game?
Which mobile game are you referring to?
Isnt there like a mobile game? I thought there was one for d&d
I'm sure there are many!
There's an Idle/Incremental game IIRC but it's nothing like the actual TTRPG from what I remember if it.
You're better off reading those two chapters and then maybe watching gameplay videos/streams
If anything clerics are more complicated. If you want a caster sorcerer or warlock are probably the easiest. But it could be good to know what you are looking for in the character so you get something you like playing
Martial classes are always a lot easier
Hi all, I'm looking for a good one-shot for a first time DM. Can anyone possibly help me out?
really? more complicated? that's insane
Personally i would probably rank them druid, cleric, wizard, bard as the four most complex.
But they can be made simpler but selecting simple options and just not care if there is a good option, just take the spells you think are cool and have a use.
druid being most or least out of those
Druid is most. They have to keep track of a lot of animal options beside spells, can change spells and have a decent amount of summoning spells
If I'm being totally honest with you, this is kinda an awful situation for you to be in. Jumping from level 6 to level 20 if you are new-ish to the game is a really terrible idea. Even if you were playing the simplest class in the game, that would still be such a massive jump in complexity, that there's really no way to help you not get overwhelmed.
Good thing to point out.
A lot of players seldomly play past level 5 so they only have a theoretical idea of what higher level play is like.
So you are in a situation where you are to learn the late game before you mastered the early/midgame and can definitely be overwhelming
Well by you i mean @sage cloak :3
There’s a pretty famous phrase in the D&D community:
“Not playing D&D is better than playing bad D&D.”
If I’m being honest, this kinda sounds like bad D&D. They’re putting you in a situation with no good outcome. The game is designed to slowly ramp up to higher level play to prevent exactly this from happening.
Even for a long time running group a jump in levels like that is unheard of
yeah its like this server where there are different dms and areas, it's space themed and they did a 25y timeskip for new years
should i just quit that server until i get more D&D experience?
If you are not attracted to the group i would probably say yes but it depends on how you like it
i mean i think i would be fine without playing in that server
I don't necessarily want to tell you to quit, but I will say that there's a pretty high chance that it won't be fun for you any longer, and I don't want that to taint your opinion of D&D as a whole.
I was just lucky to have a incredible group for my first game. I have not had luck after lol. Once you find your group its easy to get it running for years if they are all invested
Going to hit a decade in a bit over a year with them
the first group i had got to session two after repeating session a few times, and then they just stopped talking
the second group is the one i'm talking about
i dont have a third one
hadnt even made it to level two
If you have the option i would strongly recommend playing physicaly at a table. It shows a higher entery level of engagement and when everyone in the group sees the engagement everyone else have the group click
Online is so easy to be on your phone and not pay attention or just not show up at all
Online can work ofcorse but i would recommend at a table
do you know where i can find a list least to most complex?
I would not focus on it. If you find something interesting you will naturally pay more attention to the rules anyway so its hard to say
There's a list here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
I don't necessarily agree with all of the rankings, but it's a good starter.
Monk more complicated than wizard?
should i keep playing a wizard?
Yeah, it's a bit of a headscratcher.
Do you like the idea of being a caster that only or almost only focuses on spells i would say yea
yeah i guess so
What kind of magic do you find interesting?
what do you mean "kind"
Personal opinion, but I trust that most would agree:
Simple:
- Fighter
- Barbarian
- Rogue
- Monk
Average - Warlock
- Paladin
- Ranger
- Sorcerer
- Bard
Complex - Cleric
- Wizard
- Artificer
- Druid
Blasting everything in the air with aoe.
Charming people to get information or mentality crippling them.
Defensive magic or maybe getting a few minions to fight for you for example
sorcerer is less complex than wizard?
Definitely.
in what way
Almost everything is less complex than Wizard
Sorcerer has less spells and focuses on making them better instead
i like summoning
Find familiar is the first one you can learn. It can be a cat created by giving form to a spirit and it can scout and be used to see through its eyes.
It can also be a raven for flight and topdown viewing
Later you can get things like elemental beings that does elemental damage for example
and what class is that?
All casters have some options but druid and wizard have the most i think
I believe he's talking about Sorcerer
so sohuld i switch my main class over to sorcerer instead?
Are you planning 2014 or 2024?
the server is 2024, but future ones might be 2014
Wizard and Druid have the widest range of options for summoning. Sorcerer and Warlock have good, but limited options.
Charisma is also a good stat for character interaction in rp scenarios
Also if you want one permanent decently strong summon artificer if you like crafting or beast ranger if you want to be a magical hunter with your trusted beast
isnt ranger the worst class or something
Not really but some folks don’t feel Ranger lives up to what they envisioned as “ranger”
But it’s a perfectly fine class that mixes martial and spellcasting features.
I would say most classes in dnd are good, there are some that are thoroughly busted but everything can work just fine
I would swap cleric and warlock myself, but I like this list a whole bunch!
btw can you tell me a few tips about playing sorcerer?
Has any of you managed to make friends out of d&d yet as newcomers?
Yep. Warlocks have not just a subclass which heavily affects playstyle, but also pacts and invocations which makes a LOT of major decisions. The lack of spell slots also makes screwing up one of them much more punishing
Also, technically, wizard is literally the simplest class in the game; the only complexity comes from their spell list
They have the least class features
nothing really going on except remembering you can restore spell slots, learn from scrolls/other spellbooks, and make some of your cantrips/spells better sometimes
The spell list (and by extension the need to swap spells) is probably the harder part
Knowing when to juggle around between the spells you packed makes for a good Wizard, otherwise a Wizard that just stays with the few dozen spells they packed is just playing a bad Sorc
Hello! I'm very new to this but I've been wanting to play it for a while, would anyone be kind enough to teach me all the basics and answers all my questions? like a mentor kinda stuff?

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Unfortunately, this server gets way too many people every day to do any sort of 1 on 1 teaching lessons. Instead, you're probably better off trying to read through the Basic Rules yourself and seeking out help here if you get stumped.
I already read that but I have questions mostly about
Fighting and species
what are they
Like I think i understand the dice system
But when it comes to fights and using them
I don't quite get it
And for species like, can any species be any class?
Or like is there must know?
dont take anything i say as absolute, but yeah i think so
Any species can be paired with any class, yes.
Ok! And about the fights?
what class are you using
Like when do I know when to use which dice
Combat in general? That's a pretty big topic.
it'll say
Druid
have you ever been on dndbeyond
Yes but I don't really get it
Ah, well the majority of the game uses just one live of die: the d20.
If a weapon, spell, or ability requires you to use a different die, it'll say so.
OH OK SO IT IS MENTIONED
But like where can I find the list of spells
Like are they preexistant or do I have to chose?
manage your character
in dndbeyond
Okok
Also in the Basic Rules
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/spell-descriptions
its at the top it says "manage" by your character's name
then click manage character and leveling
There's a list of preexisting spells that you choose from, based on your class.

honestly i cant do much here since i only have ever managed wizard
I see none specify beginner friendly, should I assume they are not?
You can (and should) just ask!
most probably are
OK THX!!!
if you find one can i join (i need a new group desperately)
Sure I'll see, If I can
Or should we team up to find a DM?
yeah we should probably team up
YESSSS
Friendly reminder that this is not the proper channel for organizing or advertising a game or group
can you answer a few questions from me?
THANK YOU!
Colossus is correct - please keep any game soliciting/organizing to the Looking For Game channels. See #find-a-game to learn how to use those channels.
ask, 99% of games are beginner friendly
As far as questions, feel free to ask here and folks will respond as they have time, interest.
How many DND games are you typically apart of?
I'm sure it depends from person to person, and even depends from time to time. The most games I've ever been a part of simultaneously were 4, but I'm currently only in 2.
That’s what this channel is for. Ask your questions here and myself or someone else will answer them when we are available to do so. You don’t need permission to ask your questions
I think I was in six at one point? I'm in two that are actively happening, with two others on hiatus for the moment.
My max ever was 3 campaigns, but it’s very rare for me to be in more than 1 at a time. I am currently DMing one
is there some kind of alternative or simply just tattoos in dnd? Like the classic fantasy dnd stuff
(ping if you answer)
Can you clarify what you mean exactly?
is there a way for my dnd character to have tattoos, or is there like a similar alternative. I don't wanna search up when tattoos were invented but I doubt it's a common thing in like- the usual time that most dnd campaigns take place in?
if not I'd just give them markings in their skin
but just: can my dnd character have tattos if it isn't like a modern day campaign
I'm sure there are DMs who will insist on historical accuracy in a fantasy game, but tattoos are pretty common in D&D games I've watched and played in.
i isee
What are good oaths, origin feats, paladin feats and spells for a Paladin that wants to support and defend his party, but also occasionally wants to do okish dmg?
Probably better for #character-discussion!
to the best of my knowledge, there are none (i dont even know what paladin does)
👌
heya. Im new and want to try some stuff on Tabletop. with some friends we want to start D&D.
Where to begin. is starter set necessary? I see that the dnd starterset rulebook is readily available online. There are quite a few other manuals available. What gives? I can also draw the map and make character sheets on google doc. (shrug)
I don't mind spending litte bit of money, but not sure where to start and why. if there is a guide on +/- would be cool.
You don't need to buy a starter set. You can just use the free rules and grab an adventure (or make one yourself).
That said, a lot of folks have had good experiences with the starter sets, especially Heroes of the Borderlands. Apparently it does a good job demystifying the game for new folks!
Paladins are always great at both support and consistent damage.
For spells, I'd recommend Bless, which is amazing.
For your Origin Feat, I'd recommend either Musician, Magic Initiate, Lucky, or Tough.
For subclass, anything works! Ancients is a classic support subclass though.
mmkay, we could make the characters, find an opensource adventure online and just go for it?
Are there any good checklists on what do you need for such event? 😄
i really dont mind paying, but we have some talented artists around. and I don't want to buy the pack if only thing i get is colored cardboard as game board 🎲
This is a pretty good rundown: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/supplies
That whole guide is gold, in my opinion.
Just sub in whatever adventure you like.
And you can always watch an unboxing of the starter set to see the contents.
thx🙏 ,
also i forgot to mention itis 2024 rules, does any of these options change?
Nope, that's what I was referring to actually.
my friends are saying sorcerer is as complicated if not more
Than Wizard? I believe they'd be wrong, especially at early levels.
