Hey, I’m playing a simplified version of DnD at my school. I was wondering what the best race+class combo is, We are playing a battle royale either around 6 ppl.
With*
Best is subjective
Also PvP usually isn’t recommended but if we’re already here…
Also those are species
Yeah, it’s something we are doing in my English class
So it will be fun I reckon, but I wanna win ofc
I envy you
My current build is demon+mage
There isn’t a demon race in dnd, and as you seem to be using different rules idk how I can help
Anyways the classes are
Warrior
Rogue
Ranger
Mage
Cleric
not to mention their isn't a mage class either
Oh I see
Yeah…
I can send the stats tho if that works
I don’t even know if the stats work the same
So in our version we get 12 stat points, one stat point in health equals +10 HP
I'm with Nugget on this, it doesn't sound like DnD
I don’t think I can help you here, sorry
Stranger Things really got people interested in D&D and I honestly think that's a pretty good thing.
Again, it’s a simplified version and its a battle royale
Yes, but the rules and structure is completely different
I say this because I am one of the people who were interested.
I don’t know how your stats or classes work, let alone how they might translate into combat
There also seems to be no Monk class, which would’ve been my recommendation
Range basically, you have to be in range to hit the opponent
If thats what you mean
Nope
It’s very simple I think
It’s not DnD tho, at least from what it seems
If you want I can send you more info in dm’s, we got an entire powerpoint
Sure
My point is I don’t think we can talk about it here
Nice
is there a dnd beyond app/website to play?
I made a character! I’m a wood elf in a fighter class! 😆
DnDbeyond has a character creator on it, but does not have a VTT
Cool if you have any questions feel free to ask, and if you want to discuss your character you could do or, in #character-discussion
Is anyone able to explain the Artificer and how it works with its recent update?
do you have an understanding of the Artificer from Tasha's Cauldron?
the main difference I've noticed is now there is a fixed number of spells known rather than int mod+half player level
Other than that, it mostly seems to be rewording to better fit the new rules
can someone help me with a technical matter here?
Possibly, what's the issue?
i would like to know if it's possible to bind the block keybind to right mouse click?
i tried to do it ingame to no avail, however i am wondering if there's a workaround to it
That, I have no clue about
Are you talking about a game other than D&D 5e?
You will recieve better help in that game's discord server
This is the server for the tabletop D&D game, not D&D Online
You might want to ask in #non-dnd-topics but the best help would be found in DDO's discord server
thank you
Hello everyone I'm literally new to this, been wanting to try D&D for a bit, don't know what to do, I know it's complicated and fun at the same time so I'd really like to learn

what does it mean to have a roll20 character sheet ready? i need to have a level 1 character set up. in the roll20 website its so confusing to setup a character.
Roll20 is an online Virtual Tabletop platform
So I assume they want you to have a character setup in it's system for the game
do i need to buy the rulebook or player handbook to make a character?
You should be able to use the free rules to create a character. Anything beyond that would need access to the books.
For help with Roll20 character sheets, I'd check with Roll20's servers/forums
i honestly dont know what im doing and i wouldnt mind doing digital but i suck at understanding stuff at digital
You can use DnDBeyond's character sheet tool to create a character from the free basic rules.
They even have a setting that will help guide you through the process a bit.
But I'd also read through the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Chapter 2 goes over the steps and process for creating a character.
Feel free to ask questions as you run into things.
i will dont worry, ill try and see if i understand this but thatnk u
how do i link a roll20 character sheet that ive made?
If someone could look over my character sheet to tell me if there's anything missing that would be great, this is my first time making one of these!
I don't think there's a way to view Roll20 character sheets if you're not in the specific game.
Hi so im playing dnd for the first time tomorrow, theres 6 players but the more simplified dnd essentials rulebook we’re using only has 5 classes (bard, cleric, wizard, fighter, and rogue) does anybody know how we can find another pretty simple to understand class that we can use in this version?
How do I make a post for “looking for players?” Do I have to pay?
Hi all, i just joined the server and have been thinking about trying out some dnd, but ive never played before and dont know where to start.
No payment necessary. Please read #find-a-game carefully. You will use bot commands to trigger the bot - /looking-for then select the option that best fits where you're trying to post (dm if you're a player looking for a group, players if you're a DM needing players for a game, community if you have a D&D community server (more than one game, multiple DMs, multiple groups of players, etc.), and paid if you're offering a paid game).
The bot then gives you a form to fill out. Once you submit it, the bot will create a post in the specified channel and attach a thread to it. Use the thread to provide updates, clarifications, corrections, and to communicate with interested folks.
Welcome to the official D&D Discord server run by Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes and publishes D&D! Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Feel free to ask specific questions as you learn and run into things.
yo i need advice on smth
fireball. the only solution.
communicate is also another great answer
maybe if it wasnt a race issue
im basically makin this kind of unknown sorcerer soldier character
yeah, thats an entirely different sort of advice requiring thing
nah i could use fiireball and just burn the whole thing would work too
so a sorcerer/fighter multiclass?
I wouldn't recommend multiclassing if you're new to D&D (adds more complexity to a character and can lead to sub-optimal character mechanical performance)
not rlly a fighter just a sorcerer who used to be a soldier
so the soldier background, fighter class.
sorcerer class
doh
is there anything i might miss on my character sheet
my reading comprehension is a major fail right now
thing is almost everything is unknown abt him/it and i need a race that is unknown basically
a good thing to have on your main sheet is a spell attack bonus.
so you'll need to actually have a species that exists in the rules. however, that doesn';t mean the people around you need to know that species.
you peaked my interest
tell me more
i have it on the other sheet so its no biggie if i have to look at a different page. Is there anything small that a lot of people mess up but is important
Pick a species from the basic rules but describe them only as "vaguely humanoid, species indeterminate" (flavor is generally free - e.g. how you describe something, as long as it doesn't mechanically impact the game, is generally fine)
most humanoid species are of a fairly similar height and build. somewhat. if they never see your face or the rest of you, they wont be able to tell the species
think Goblin Slayer or Snake Eyes from G.I.Joe. you nearly never see their face or identifying features
like, its fine if the players know what species you are, as long as they don't pass the meta knowledge to their characters. the DM will most definitely need to know your character's species. you don't keep character build secrets like that from your DM.
hmmm ok ok variant human is my top pick rn
there ya go
so wait by my build cant be a secret from my dm does that include my history too?
Correct - DM should know how to place your character in context of the game/campaign they are running
if i put it in the sheet will only the dm see it tho?
your DM needs to know your backstory. they handle the whole world. if they don't know your back story, they have the possibility of contradicting it or nullifying it.
D&D is a collaborative game - the more you work with your fellow players (even if they play as if their characters don't know ...things), the better things typically go.
you can work with your DM to withold certain pieces of info, or chunks of backstory from the other players. it's okay to have a big reveal later
like, the DM knowing about it all can actually work to keep the secret until the big reveal instead of accidentally blowing the secret
aight aight that seems more exciting ngl
Hot take, players with secret reveals like twist race or twist class never work.
The other players at the table won't be excited they'll just be like "okay" and they'll probably have already guessed it if they know how D&D works.
You are not the DM, it is not your job to suprise and delight the players. You're there to make and play a heroic adventure in the story the DM lays out for you the most surprising and delightful you can be is making and playing a good well rounded character who interacts with and invests in the other players and story
You can definitely have secrets in your backstory, and if you're playing a campaign where DM says backstorys are important the DM will likely work with you to reveal your secrets at an opportune time
But the secret rogue trope will never work and isn't really fun to the DM or the table. Basically if you're trying to make the game about your PC you're playing wrong
how much heath is good for a level 1 wizard because i only have six and i fell like that is to low
you have your hit die based on your class, and add that to you con bonus. BAM! that's your level 1 hp.
That's pretty typical 😅
You could try swap your str, dex, or even wis/cha with your Con, con is very important to wizards
But you could be low health because of bad rolls, as a roleplay choice, or just because you're a wizard
especially lower level wizards, they are squishy
Wizards are glass canons generally regardless so it's okay to be low health.
Just make sure you invest in ranged spells and don't get hit!
Just to clarify this for new players, it's the maximum of your hit die you don't roll for health at level 1 😊
So for a wizard it's 6 + Con
Hello new to dnd beyond trying to find a dm
everybody knows what happened to him even tho they dont believe it its just how and who did it to him he is supposed to be an experiment soldier from the mind flayer empire wars and stuff
idk thought it was a cool backstory
ima send the sheet when its done
btw i used point buy for the stats is that ok?
that all depends on your future DM and the campaign.
i can change it later tho right?
yup. working with your DM you might need to change some city names or something here or there. keep your original as is and make a variant of it for the game. sort of like a multiverse version.
How to find a beginners game
you're in luck. we have a #find-a-game channel with some info and instructions
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/159001593/B5X3zG check this out and tell me what do you think
@cedar sluice thx for the help
you might what to put your CHA higher, that is the stat that fuels your spells. you certainly don't need to change it, its all in how you want to play the character.
oh mb i though sorcerer scales of int
not sure what the 2024 rules say. i'm just going by the 2014 stuff. but yeah. wizards fuel their spells with INT, Sorcerers and Warlocks and Paladins and Bards source from CHA, and Clerics source from WIS.
aight fixed it thx for the help
no problemo. if you need advice or ideas for levelling and spell selection, there's the #character-discussion channel.
Hello
dose anyone have any dragonborn wizard character sheets that way i can compare whether i am missing anything.
I can’t find anywhere in the rule book that talk about spell casting modifier. How do you calculate it ?
mb i somehow forgot to save the backstory
I can’t find anywhere in the rule book that talk about spell casting modifier. How do you calculate it ?
Spellcasting stat + proficiency bonus
Ok. Where is the spell casting stat ?
It is the bonus number for the ability score you use for casting. So if your a wizard it is you Intelligence bonus. For Warlock it would be Charisma bonus.
For cleric its Wisdom! I understand. I wish I knew where this information would be in the rule book 2024
When you say bonus, you talk about the modifier in this primary ability. Correct ?
correct
How do you know what to put in the proficiencies and languages and the features and traits section? Its pretty vague on what is designated to go there.
If you are looking at a dndbeyond sheet click on Spells and you will see the modifier
Are you creating a sheet by hand?
Ok. So I have a modifier of +3 in wisdom with a cleric, the +3 would be my spell casting stat + my proficiency bonus which is +2.
So my spell casting modifier would be +5 ?
I’m also creating a sheet by end. So I would have liked to know where to find the rule about spell casting modifier in the book
Yup
Do you know what page talk about spell casting bonus ?
It should also be in the PHB
I just don’t know where
Well I’ve been looking everywhere I can’t find it :/
worst case use some online builder to help figure it out
spellcasting bonus should be your spellcasting ability + proficiency bonus i think?
otherwise do a full rule beat for beat
Lf group I’m new someone take me in 😭
Would you be able to send me a screenshot of the rule ? Because I found different information in the Internet
search for 'lfg' is best imo
What did the internet say?
That it’s just the modifier of my primary ability not + the proficiency bonus
it's + proficiency I'm sure
Alrighty then !
Where I do that at
if your talking about the ability that dictates the spell modifier you can just search it up on google like for wizard it is int I dont know if thats what your talking about
search engine, google etc
I would recommend to read the whole conversation
ChatGPT Ty
Page 233, Flav. Of the 2024 PHB
👎
l
Bro I’m not tryna go on Reddit
not joking its social
I’m scared of Reddit
Reddit, roll20, DnD beyond, or check out #find-a-game
thats where humans are
Nop lol page 233 is equipment but thanks tho
yep
I damn hope I’m reading it right
Hey everyone i am knew to d&d the only thing i have done so far is create a charecter on dnd and beyond but i need someone to show me the ropes and hopefully i can play my first campaign
On page 238 it talks about spell attack modifier and not spell casting modifier which are two different things on the sheet
Ohhhh
Yeah the spellcasting modifier is just your primary stat
I misread your message
oh i misread that
seems like you have got it figured out
Oh a wild Gemurin
gimurin!
Damn it
Typo
So for Cleric. It’s just my basic modifier in Wisdom which is +3 at the moment that’s it ?
Mhm!
Personally I’m a Tako and a Brat
Is that a yes ? Or a no ? 😂
well nice to meet you but i don't think this is the place for that conversation! let's move to non-dnd
Yes
Ok !
No no, I think the convo can end here
fair
Just recognise smt familiar
If you have some time I’d love to see where in the PHB it this rule
Idk if this is what you’re looking for, but under the spellcasting part of the class features it says “[stat] is your Spellcasting ability for you [class] spells”
Hello again
Hallo
I have read the DND beyond how to play now
I am now looking at character creation sheet
Damn you really did it
I remember you from yesterday 😎
It was 2 days ago
Start creating.
The first steps are in the basic rules, chapter 2 character creation
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ChooseaCharacterSheet
hello, new here, does anyone know when the kit shipments come in?
Uhh, do I need to be in a dnd campaign first, or can I just mess around and create a character?
Or if you want to be lazy go on D&D beyond and use the character builder
I recommend making one, have a spare level 1 character handy means you can join beginner one shots
I'm actually running one tonight
Ooo
But if you join a full campaign you'll want to create a new character in tandem with your DM
I should probably do one shots to begin instead of a multi day campaign
But knowing how to make a character is a great first step, and the best way to learn is to do 😁
If you're playing online I'd say it's the best way to get started.
If you have an IRL group you can sometimes dive into something longer if you have a bunch of eager players
I have no friends of any kind
Kit shipments?
like uhm to get started!
That's not a great start, but hopefully you can make some here
I’m new to this
That’s a hella good deal
It is?
Yes
Damn
Are they nice dice?
I don't think they are
Wait 5 sets or 5 dice
I got volcanic design, plain green, cosmic purple and dark blue, gold and black, and plain blue. All sets
Oh then that’s not half bad
Pretty decent deal
Around average I’d say, if not a bit better
not me with a bag of 17 sets q_q
I don't even play in person as of yet
They're useful for MTG at least
And it comes with one big bag, and 4 small bags
Im currently on the character creator for dnd beyond
What are all these... sources?
Thats a lot of stuff that I do not understand
Just to confirm, did you read the rules first?
Follow along with https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character it walks you through the process and explains things
Yes, that is where I am at
Do I just go along with the default?
What are Prerequisite feats?
anyone got dragon born wizard with sage background that way i can compare my character sheet.
Feats that are required to take other feats; some feats will name others in their requirements and you need to have that feat to take the more advance one
Aight, Ima go do chores, and then see what I make
My friend group is setting up a DnD group, we're only missing a DM and already have a full group of 6. Is the party role balanced? V
Chronurgy wizard, shepherd druid, devotion paladin, arcane trickster rogue (or phantom, unconfirmed), twilight cleric, and either enchantment wizard or draconic sorc
Party composition shouldn't matter if the DM manages the game effectively, but you've got a mix of martials and spellcasters, with all of the main mental stats represented and multiple sources of healing. You should be good!
The twilight cleric is new, I just made a full class guide for her, she said she wanted a cleric and I explained what each subclass is based around except twilight because I didn't know how to explain it so I just said "google it I can't explain but it's amazing"
She had a google break, came back and immediately said she wanted to play twilight cleric. This is for thematic relevance only, she has no idea what subclasses are broken
The thing your really need to watch out for with twilights is that temp HP CD. It's a gnarly amount of damage mitigation.
Just threw one togher, I'll dm you screenshots off of roll20 because IIRC they don't actually have a way to share sheets on there othen than joining a game and we can't post images here
Okay, I am back, and have a question
So, lets say I want to be a Cleric, but my character does not actually know proper religion? Or am I asking this wrong? Or do I need to ask elsewhere
A cleric doesn't have to be knowledgeable about religion. Some people like leaning into tropes, and others want to subvert them. Do what feels right to you!
Well, I am new, and have no real idea of how it would work
Narratively, you mean?
...Yesn't?
sure
So while a cleric is traditionally is connected to a god, they can also get their power from a force or philosophy. So it'd be easy enough to have a cleric who is connected to the divine but not tied to any formal religious organizaton or rituals.
Okay, narratively, my character is supposed to be a cleric, but they only copy what they see
No actual understanding
That might be a harder sell, but anything outside of the rules is a "check with your table" moment.
Uhh, how about a barbarian that dresses as a cleric?
But not the barbarian class?
I asked chatgpt before any of this, and it recommended a cleric with war domain?
And I do not understand or intend to follow through
In hindsight, my character is probably too specific?
I know I wouldn't let it fly at my table, but some other DM might!
I'll settle for a regular cleric until I understand things better then
Sometimes filing an idea away for later can be the right call. I'm not saying to do that, of course. At the end of the day, it's up to you.
Well, at the end of the day, I have never played DND, and I do not actually know.
Huh. I didn't know every single character had to be some specific background
Is there really not an option for just generally being a civilian?
Well background is one of the things you use to build a character, like your race and class, but it's not necessary something you need to heavily lean into
You could take a background that has features you like, like let's say gladiator, and just flavor it as having practised with weapons as a hobby, rather than actually having been a gladiator
Thats cool
once again asking a probably stupid question: how does time work in the game???? like spells lasting certain time or for example in dragons of stormwreck isle, on the compass rose you can open a crate in 1 minute with a crowbar or 10 minutes with just your hands. and long and short rests? or like the fungi octopus in the caves the octopus can breathe above water for 1 hour
i just don't understand how passage of time works
and what associated rules mean/do
Each round in combat is six seconds of in-game time. Anything beyond that is subject to the DM's decision.
There's also the rules about travel space: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TravelPaceTable
what is in game time in combat? why does the 6 seconds matter?
Say you cast a spell that lasts for 1 minute. That's ten rounds.
Or a spell that takes an hour to cast wouldn't be suitable for combat.
gotcha. ty for the help!!
a lot of things are making sense as we play (i'm doing my first campaign rn with other first-timers) but time was the one thing our entire party was like ???
Yep, that'll happen a ton with your first game!
And I have made a chartacter now
Now to not know what to do for another few days because I am too shy to try anything
Can a character with high charisma swear a lot?
Honestly with that many players one of you should consider becoming the DM
Any character can swear a lot
CHA characters just have a better chance of getting away with it
Btw she's a warlock, 75% undead warlock, 25% fathomless warlock . Plan to mash those up
Where is the template for looking dm thing I can’t find it and I wanna join a campaign
Don't ask ChatGPT anything ever.
2 reasons; 1. It doesn't know D&D very well and is frequently wrong
2. D&D is a game about imagination and creativity. Offloading that work to a robot will destroy your soul and cripple your ability to play the game.
You shouldn't use chat GPT in general especially in the hobby space, but it's uniquely destructive in D&D and will cripple your ability to play.
You're a D&D infant and every time you ask chat GPT something it's like you're being dropped on your head
A noble, artisan, farmer, merchant, or wayfarer would all probably be regular citizen in most D&D worlds
Huge! I'd love to take a look if it's shareable on D&D beyond
I can send you a screenshot on DM
You can PM me if you're asking about me specifically 😅, or check out #looking-for-players see if anyone is hosting a game where they're happy to teach
You could also make a post in #looking-for-dm and express what kind of play you're interested and how much learning you've done already
Go to #find-a-game and it has instructions on how to make a post
Is their a website I can’t use to learn all the classes, races, and subclasses?
*can
D&D beyond has entries for all of them but you can't read all the information if you don't own done if the books, for example the basic rules only have 1 subclass per class
But you can still see the full list, it'll just say like "war domain" and then in the more details it'll have a link to buy the PHB
I recommend picking up the players handbook, either on D&D beyond or at your local game store, it has the vast majority of important subclasses and enough character options to last a lifetime
I wouldn't recommend getting any expansion content until you're very familiar with the base game (or maybe ever if you want to play conservatively 😁)
Guys if I wanna make a DND OC with either guns or playing cards infused with magic and used as weapons what should I do
Guns are in the game, depending on how advanced your thinking, by about level 3 you should be able to buy a pistol or musket
Magic playing cards sounds like flavour to me - be a wizard and see if your DM will allow a playing card set to be your spellcasting focus. Just make sure you follow all the regular focus rules by having a free hand to wield the cards.
There appears to be no one specifying they teach newcomers
Hehehehe
Alternatively I think there are some weird card based subclasses in the book of many things... if not a subclass there's a LOT of deck based magic items - you could perhaps join a campaign and tell your DM you're interested in aquiring a specific deck
You could also craft a magic deck or buy one at a magic store if your DM allows that type of aquisition
Kk, if I use a wizard can they imbue items with magic? Like the a pistol (I have an idea 😏)
And you'd need to get a hold of the book of many things to see which deck of magic cards is appropriate for you level.. I'll warn you the magic cards are often unpredicatble and can backfire
The Artificer classes whole gimick is imbuing magic into things
👍
Well you can look for folks who aren't saying experiecned players only 🙂
Try find a DM who is running a one shot or looking for something lowkey you think will fit your scheudle and ask if you can join - just give them a friendly warning you're still learning
Okay thank you so much 😄
If you want to @ me in #character-discussion I could take a look at your idea specifically and tell you if I think you can make it work mechanically
I am too afraid to ask anyone
Hi too afraid to ask anyone, I’m Nugget
Also you can ask questions here, there’s no pressure
People wouldn’t go here to help unless they wanted to answer questions
Plus, the server is nice enough
The DMs posting in looking for players are definitionally looking for players 🙂 you don't need to be shy the worst thing they'll say is no and they might even give helpful advice on where else to look
Oh, nah. I mean I am too afraid to ask for permission to join something
Same thing ig
Just ask to join. You have nothing to lose.
They want you to ask because you're the exact person some of them are trying to find
Ya see, I was unpopular, and very much grew up disliking my attitude to other people
Just double check the timezone, I'm in australia so anybody saying EST, CST or anything north american is totally off the table for me 😭 (<- 95% of all posts)
I'd pull an all nighter if I didn't have family at home
I assume I'd need to be vocal
Some games are text based, especially in communities, but yeah the typical D&D game is vocal
You can change that 😅 nobody knows you here, you're welcome to reinvent yourself
I'd say if you're invested in the game and respectful of your other players you won't have any trouble at all here
Aight, I will see someday, because obviously nothing is happening today for me
Okay I kinda need help, are they any sources to learn DND, I wanna learn
As per I have been recommneded a lot, DND Beyond
Check out #learn-to-play
is the forgotten realms the most popular dnd universe? i kinda wanna look up some lore cos idk maybe it could be interesting and fun
all i know is that the baldurs gate games are set in those universes, and even though i haven't played those games, it sounds like its good if it is part of a popular game series
It's probably the most used now, yeah. I think that's fair to say. Though there are other popular ones like Eberron and Dragonlance.
like i thought it was like warhammer 40k where theres one world with its own set lore but i was shellshocked to find out how many there were
Yup! Currently, D&D handles the different setting like a multiverse type deal. There are even spells like Dream of the Blue Veil that would allow you to cross settings.
oh my god this goes deeper than i thought. i thought like "okay one universe. how hard can it be to piece it all together" but your telling me that in this ONE UNIVERSE there's different planes of existence (about 105 on the wiki) and all of them interact with each other in some way😭
man my productivity is gonna be absolutely destroyed
You only need to know about the ones you are playing in 🙃
but i wanna know ALL OF THEM (/j)
People have spent 50 years building D&D worlds, it really isn't necessary to know all details.
man, i love how dedicated nerds can be.
👋🏻hi all. Joined as my 12yo son wants to learn to play and stop we got him the Stranger Things box set for Christmas. However we're having quite the time understanding all the terminology, rules, etc.
I felt a better way to learn might be to join, or even just observe, a game and found my way here through the Discord of one of our local stores.
So just looking for anything to get our feet wet! I read through the learn to play channel and will be pulling down some of those resources tomorrow. We're in the Seattle area in case anybody is nearby and wants some level 0 company 😁
Welcome! here on the server we have lfg channels dedicated for group finding. You can check #find-a-game to learn more.
Every D&D game takes place in the multiverse (unless you don't want it to) you can make up your own world and it's still part of the multiverse. The idea is that we're all running millions of different games in different settings, and they're all valid. So you'll never map the multiverse because you'll never find out about my homebrew setting and I'm not going to tell you! mwahahaha
Hey almost brand new here just trying to get more into dnd. I understand basic concepts and rules just looking for a direction
Wdym by that?
Hey everyone I'm new to the official DND stuff, I've played a lil bit of everweave and it got me hooked so would like to try something involving more people, so please be kind cus I don't really know what I'm doing lol
I’m confused where to go I want to try finding a group but I don’t know the rules about character creation exactly
For this server specifically you can try #find-a-game to look for games. And for character creation you can read the basic rules
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

First step, the free Basic Rules are above, grab that and pick a class, species and background. No wrong choices at this stage!
As a first time player should I make my characters or use pre made ones
Up to you. If you feel like challenging yourself and want to learn more about how the game works, making your own character can be really instructive and fun.
You roll 5d8, and then subtract that total from the hp of creatures you want to affect in sequence.
So let's say you roll 18 on the 5d8 and are casting it on a group of goblins. Goblins have 7 hp.
Goblin 1 = asleep, you can still affect 11 hp
Goblin 2 = asleep, you can still affect 4 hp
Goblin 3 = not asleep, because it has 7 hp vs 4 hp that you could still affect.
Me after pulling an all nighter questioning my academic choices over the past year.
Thx, i thought it was the "damage enemies first" type of spell
No worries. Yeah it's certainly one of the more unique spells. Legacy sleep still works how it used to work in older editions and it shows.
I wonder if alter self (copying the species of an enemy group) > hide behind enemy lines > cancel alter self > calm emotions on all enemies while behind their lines > magic missile slot 2-3 (if my group decides to attack rather than slip through) > legacy sleep. Would be a good play as a lvl6 sorcerer (between turns ofc)
If i have a remaining higher slot i'd use sleep on slot 2-3 but i doubt i'd have any left
Sounds like a thing to try, sure. Though after the first magic missile, the enemies will probably realize what's up.
Its more like the game has existed for 50 years, not that worlds have been built over 50 years
Well, yeah but again i'd only use it if my group attacks post-calm emotions 😭
Hey,I'm a newcomer here, what class do y'all recommend for a newbie to use?
Whichever looks cool. I don’t think there’s any class that’s too complicated for newbies.
FIghter and barbarian are very straightforward to learn. Here's a list of approximate class complexity:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#ClassOverview
The simplest classes in my eyes are Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue and Warlock.
Alright thanks!
I've seen many people make a game when they ban Unearthed Arcana as a sourcebook, why?
Unearthed arcana is playtest material, so not balanced by definition.
Unearthed Arcana is DnD content that's still in testing, so isn't always balanced
Whichever you want! You can learn basically any class with some reading, practice and a good DM and group. I'd advise to look into the subclasses a bit though, because a subclass can completely change your playstyle.
Alright,I'll try to find a game,I picked the fighter class because it didn't seem that complex to me.
What species and background did you go for?
Species I picked half orc and background,I picked soldier
which ruleset you using? 2014 or 2024?
2024 one
bro today mys first 3 session are over and its my first game and fist dm experience it was nice
I’m looking for a DM who’s okay with beginners.
Ah so, Half-Orc doesn't exist as a playable species in the 2024 rules, it was changed to Orc, which has slight differences.
Although depending on who your DM is when it comes to playing they might allow you to use the Half-Orc species from an older book.
Try #find-a-game , there might be someone wanting to DM beginners in #looking-for-players , alternatively you could make a post in #looking-for-dm .
Thx
Alright,thanks
np
Or you pick which part of your heritage counts for the features, and describe the rest yourself.
Hey, I'm new to dnd and all I know is that paladins are awesome and I want to play them more, how do I jpin a campaign ?
#find-a-game , you probably want #looking-for-players specifically
Do u wanna play
Thanks

Question, is it possible to obtain new feats after a character is created? Feats like Martial Weapon/Heavy Armour Proficiency
Yes, it's why we have stuff such as the Ability Score Improvement, which can substituted with a new feat if the DM allows.
For the most part new feats outside of character class are down to the DM if they'll allow it
For example your DM may allow your character in their down time to go train with some guards and over time that could amount to you gaining feats like Martial Weapon Training or Heavily Armoured.
Hey Im new to Dnd Looking to join my first Game (I have idea of what to expect but not the exact rules)

I personally use Worldographer, but I believe Inkarnate is the most popular one.
Aye
Hey folks, take the game soliciting/organizing to the proper channels (Looking For Games - see #find-a-game for more information)
It's off-topic here
Ik but I can't make another post until 13 of january
Correct - you can only create a post once every 7 days.
Doesn't stop you from looking through the other LFG channels to find players or games
And you can direct message them or use the thread attached to their post to communicate with them
Yeah we just had 3 of our players leave and our DM so I was trying to build it back up again
Yeah I've done that already but no one responded
Please use the proper channels or direct messages
The discussion channels are not for game organizing/soliciting
Fair enough
Try raising a post on the D&D Beyond forums, there's a LFG section there.
They have an active post up so they'll need to wait to create a new post. But they can look through folks looking for DMs and use the thread to message them about their game.
How about Reddit?
Ah yeah - definitely spread your search wide. We are not the only place to find players/groups for D&D
how do my friends join my campaing on vtt maps
First set up a DnDBeyond campaign and use the DnDBeyond Campaign invite link to have your friends join and bring/create characters in that campaign. Then when you're ready to play, run your Maps and they should be able to view the scene and move their tokens around.
thank you
Thanks

Hey
hi
Can anyone criticize my character?
Yes we can, I would also recommend asking in #character-discussion as that channel is probably the better place to ask

Can I make a map on D&D beyond?
DnDBeyond doesn't provide map making tools per se but DnDBeyond Maps can display what map assets you upload or use maps from official D&D adventures.
hi ive been hearing about DnD for many years now, i always wondered what even is that- i asked some people most just said its a long boring game but i wanted to ask some of actuall players what this game is about?
It’s a tabletop RPG where players are fantasy heroes going on quests, vanquishing monsters, and the like. It takes place in the imagination and is at heart a collaborative storytelling experience.
Simplest way to describe it would be a collaborative story telling game
i cant explain it better than iamrazorwing. Might i ask, have those players every played before?
This is a good quick and dirty intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpVJZrabMQE
only board game i played is catan i have no idea what this means
people*
basically you are a hero. You can decide everything about this hero, how they look, what their attacks are, everything. Then, you have the DM. The DM is the world, and will provide challenges to overcome. Mind that they are supposed to be overcome, the DM is not your enemy.
well, small side note, you can decide how your attacks look, not what they actually do
- One person is the DM, who plays the world and everything in it. They describe the situation.
- Each player describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine - success/failure).
- The DM describes the results. Repeat the cycle.
A DM is sort of the video game code that the players interact with, who each control their own individual hero.
All the other people are the players, the heroes i describes earlier
what do you mean by that
so i can make up everything?
there's this thing called "flavor". One's fire bolt might be another one's energy blast
The DM makes up a lot. The players react to what the DM creates and might push their own agenda forward. But yeah, the DM is usually creating a lot.
and what is the dice for
Dice determine success or failure.
To determine succes/failure on something that isnt very easy or impossible
It has an element of randomness, but it isn’t totally random, no.
No, the game is not random. Certain outcomes are random, but the overall story is mostly determined by the DM, and not a random roll
It should be more like an episodic story that everyone contributes to making, there are determined outcomes based on parameters set by the dm
Me and my friends are starting tonight, making character sheets and the sort, my friends is dm’ing and making a campaign for us . None of us have ever played either, ANY tips, ANY

Read the rules and #learn-to-play!
Hey how do I make good gods and relationship dynamics with them as a paladin? Also how do I pull off playing a paladin without acting like a self righteous prick?
Well, here are some gods: https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse
Your paladin is especially faithful, I take it?
Just to establish a baseline, Paladins don’t need to be connected to a deity. Their power comes from their oath. That being said the archetypal Paladin does follow a deity of some kind.
The deities your Paladin may follow are up to the setting your DM is running. Ditto for how present they may be in your Paladin’s life. Many deities don’t have frequent interaction not are super physically present in the mortal realms.
Hi evrybody!!
Hello
Additionally, being a “self-righteous prick” is a character flaw you can intentionally take, but it isn’t ascribed to the Paladin by default. Paladins aren’t bound and chained by their tenets; they’re typically reasonable and flexible. Most tenets are written to be this way too. A Redemption Paladin doesn’t always have to redeem, and redemption doesn’t have to mean letting someone live. A devotion Paladin might not lie or cheat themselves, but they might show compassion or understanding when others do it.
Also hello newbies!
I'm actually using ChatGPT to get started with D&D. It creates scenarios for me, I roll the dice, and it (as the DM) determines the outcome. I'm getting up my courage to look for play-by-post (PbP) games.
AI bots will happily give you false information
I certainly wouldn't recommend using an LLM to learn DnD at all.
One of the worst things about using AI to learn D&D is that it can get information that’s subtly wrong that’s hard to tell unless you’ve read the actual rules.
One of the worst things is using AI
That’s fair — I’m definitely using the books and official rules too. ChatGPT has just helped me get comfortable with the concepts and practice solo before playing with others.
heeeeeeeelloooooooooooo!
Thanks, I’ll check it out. Technically we’re playing daggerheart but I think this will give me plenty of good inspiration to work with
As for faithfulness, I don’t know. We’re just starting a new campaign (technically a tutorial so the other people who’ve never touched fantasy/rpg/ttrpg stuff can get the hang of everything) and I forgot to fully flesh out the religious aspects of the character
I’d say currently he’s out and about because of a minor challenge in his faith because he starts hearing voices that don’t belong to the god he was raised to worship or whatever
how's it going guys!!
i'm so happy to be here!
do you know why i decided to join (it's my first time playing)?
so uhm...it's because of a tv series, it gave me inspiration to do that 😅

How does spell slots work for multi-classing?
Check the multi classing chart in the basic rules/Players Handbook https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Spellcasting
You combine them ||unless you're a Warlock|| and follow the multiclass spell slot chart for how many you get. You can also look online for some multiclass spell slot calculators that can do the math for you.
Odd question
The 2024 rule books
How does one get the map out of the back?
Does it pull or need to be cut out?
Either way I think? I think it does have a dotted line to help with cutting it out?
Ah I didn't see that I'll check later if so. I tried to unfold multiple maps and couldn't compute!
Then did t want to yank it and ruin something
Hey, I am sorry I am new to dbd can help me set up and explain things to me 😅
Heya I can help, can I private message you?
Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
Hey any good dnd tutorial vid to watch
Remember to use #find-a-game to look for groups/players to play with! Unfortunately soliciting games outside the proper channels is against server rules.
Noted
hello, i am new here
No video will be a 100% replacement for learning the rules unless they’re reading them verbatim. You might enjoy videos from people like JoCat’s Crap Guide to D&D or the Handbooker Helper series from Critical Role, but they aren’t replacements for reading the Basic Rules. Keep in mind that both series were made for the 2014 version of D&D 5e and not the current 2024 ruleset. They’ll be helpful since the overall structure will be the same but there will be key differences that you’d need to read the Basic Rules to understand
Also welcome Galileo!
I have the rules on my kindle and plan to read them but I want a quick lookover before i play tomorrow
If it’s more for a general overview I suggest GinnyD’s Absolute Beginners Guide. As before it’ll be a supplement not a replacement:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNNBjVmNbQI
Howdy, new here and just learning about the world of D&D. I think I have a character put together and next is finding the rules to go over, then people to play with.
If you’d like your character reviewed feel free to share it either here or in #character-discussion . As for the Basic Rules they are linked in this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play
And then to use this server to find a group the instructions are in #find-a-game
Heya guys im new to DND and wanted to play it I know the basics and stuff and yeah I'm looking forward to play for the first time!
-# Though I think I'd usually recommend reading the rules before putting a character together
Very true haha
Thanks!
Oh lol, I just clicked on the interesting part of the learn to play and started rolling. I guess I can always go back and change something later.
How do I go about sharing? Just copy the link or is there some type of share button?
If you’ve made the sheet on D&DBeyond there will be a share button right next to the long/short rest buttons
It's a little confusing, so multi-classing fully follows full casters? What happens if I'm a Wizard/Fighter
Just make sure the character’s privacy settings are set to public (first tab of the character builder)
Anyone got some tips on creating a character?
If you are multiclassing with a non caster class, you simply follow your wizard spell progression.
Please do
You gain spell slots as you gain levels in wizard (not overall character level)
But why does a lvl 16 Wizard lvl4 Druid has 9th spell slots?
Because they are a lvl 20 character with 2 full casters worth of levels. Then you use the spell slot table I shared earlier
They might not have lvl 9 spells but they still get 9th level spell slots
Mechanically:
- Play what you think you’d find fun over what may be “simple” or “better.”
- Read up on your class’s primary stat (see their class page) and prioritize that.
- Con, Dex, and Wis are good secondary stats that you generally don’t want to be negative
Narratively: - Make a character that wants to participate in a party and wants to participate in the campaign hook
- Make a character that other characters would want to adventure with
- Answer the 3 essential questions of a backstory (Who are you? How did you get your skills/powers? Why are you risking your life adventuring?)
- Try to avoid specifics (e.g. named kingdoms, deities) in your backstory until you find a campaign. This helps naturally adapt your backstory to the DM’s world
Ok, so:
- Multiclass spell slots for full casters follow the normal route
- Full caster + not caster follows the full caster up to the fullcaster level
- Full caster + Warlock gets the full caster up to it's level + Warlock Pact up to the Warlock level
Is there another variable?
Warlock levels are not counted for the purposes of multiclassed spellslots.
Yeah, warlock is separate from the spell progression in that case. You count the spellcaster and warlock separate from eachother. Only classes with the spellcasting feature get added together as Pact Magic, while similar, is different. The chapter I linked earlier is the whole chapter of multiclassing Spellcasters it explains it better then I could tbh
As per the spell slots subsection of the multiclassing rules:
- You count your levels in fullcasters (except Warlock)
- You count half your levels (rounded up) in the half-casters
- You count no levels for any other class
- As a special exception, you count 1/3 of your levels (rounded down) in Eldritch Knight Fighter or Arcane Trickster Rogue
I've been thinking for a while, wondering if there would be any experienced DMs in this channel who would accept doing a campaign with one or more players with very little experience?
I ask, of course, because I have very little experience, and the only games I've played were short (lasted AT MOST a few months) with inexperienced DMs, so the inexperience on both sides made it slightly awkward.
I'm aware that, as an inexperienced player, I will sometimes struggle to understand all the mechanics of the game, and my roleplay will most likely not be that great, but I would try my best, if anyone would take me in! ☺️
Many groups are fine with taking on new to D&D folks - but it helps a lot if you spend some time and effort reviewing the rules. ALso note that it is off-topic to solicit/organize games outside of our LFG channels. Please read #find-a-game to find out how to use our Looking For Game channels.
Gotcha, thanks. I was trying to find that channel, but it wasn't in my suggested channels, so I kind of assumed there wasn't one 😅
So complicated hhaha thanks!
Hi, I'm new here, could someone help me?
Thats why I am glad D&D Beyond does that all automatically for me
Fair

Okay character is posted in #character-discussion
@wheat crystal I used a d&d beyond character maker like the easy version could you take a look at it?

That's what this chat is here for. But the best way for us to help is for you to ask questions. If you can be specific about something that's confusing you, we can explain it in a way that hopefully makes sense
Short answer: People need to get paid for their work!
But for real D&D can be gotten into completely for free. There’s the free Basic Rules which contains everything necessary to play except for friends to play with. If you can’t get the books at the moment I recommend checking your local library!
I have the basic game guide, I understand several things, but for example I don't understand what the numbers that appear below each character characteristic are.
I don't have a local library 😞
I don't understand the map either. Does it have to be created already, or can I create it myself? How?
Hiii I'm new to D&D can someone explain the rules and everything??
Those are the ability modifiers, explained here in the first chapter of the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
The idea is that your Ability score confers an ability modifier that may be applied to a d20 Test if it is applicable
Hey is there anywhere where I can send an image of my character sheet
Welcome! Check out my message a few messages above for some newbie resources!
What is that based on, what limits are there?
You can use a reputable image/file hosting service (Google Drive for example) and link to an image/file that way.
Check out those free rules - the first chapter covers how the game plays and core game mechanics.
Everything else builds off of that
Can you send me the link?
Okayyy tysm
I linked it in my message! Otherwise it is also in #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins!
Link to the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
As for this, any maps your game will use will be provided by your DM
Imagine that at some point I want to make the map and be the master, how do I do it? I am aware that the map is divided into hexagons of 0.7 km each
Not always. Maps are just ways to convey where something is in relationship to other things. Scale can be very dependent on what you're trying to communicate about that relationship.
The most commonly used type of map will be a Battlemap, as an example, which typically uses a square grid of 5x5 ft squares instead of hexes
okey,and then?
There are many map making tools. One of the most popular ones is Inkarnate
As far as being a Dungeon Master... a DM takes on the role similar to a stage manager - they set the scene, invite the actors (players) to play their role in that scene, they decide what rules are in effect for the given game context and make rulings, they decide when dice rolls are needed and what the results mean within the given game context. They also play the Non Player Characters and enemies/monsters and help manage combat and generally guide the story for the group playing.
that i know, but thanks. The real problem is that i want to play with a bunch of Friends that have never played before(me either)
That's fine - everyone can learn together
It's not like you have to have any experience at all to be a DM (it does help, but it's not required)
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The D&D Free Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

Unfortunately, this server gets way too many people every day to do any sort of 1 on 1 teaching lessons. Instead, you're probably better off trying to read the rules yourself and seeking out help here if you get stumped.

My friends want me to be DM tomorrow. Any advice?
The DM basics in the free rules offer excellent advice:

And the Running the Game series by Matt Colville on youtube offers great broader DMing advive:

you asking for what we would recommend?
Yes but also what does it do / signify
2014 or 2024 rules, because they're slightly different
Think of it like a little block of mechanics, similar to your choice of class, just much smaller.
ive been learning how to play and have the basics down up for sitting in on someones session though if anyone is chill w that
2024
Can it clash with my other choices
Not really, they're almost necessarily complimentary. However, it's often recommended that you put your stat boost from the background into the ability score most favored by your choice of class.
So I would put the boost into dexterity
Ok, so the backgrounds give you Ability Score Improvements, Proficiency in 2 skills and 1 Tool, and an Origin feat
Oh ok
A good choice for a ranger, yep
Ty
np
You can look at the free background options here, in case you haven't had a chance to check them out:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#BackgroundDescriptions
Oh ty I will
Hello.
evenin. feel free to ask any questions
Is the gunslinger class usually ok with DMs?
I'd say usually not, since it's homebrew.
If you want to cover your bases, I'd stick to the player's handbook.
OK
Wspp, so uh, kindly but i didnt understand most of the starting stuff (i dont even know what DM stands for...), but uhh, how should i get started, and, can i like find a group here?

Welcome!
In order to understand some of the basic abbreviation that we like to throw around have a look at the list on top here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary
It's recommended that you read over the first chapter in the free rules as well, it basically explains all the important things about the game:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Okay cool, and uh, is it just like following narrators orders and trowing dices to cast some cool stuff or garbage stuff with sparkles?
Well, there are quite a lot of rules, but you can certainly flavor a lot of sparkles on top of it.
Oh w, welp, ig imma try to find a group of ppl that r new to try n understand, is there like a channel i can find groups
You can find the group finding channels here: #find-a-game
But I do recommend you read the above links first. DMs are usually happy to have new players, but it's very helpful in getting into groups if you understand some of the game.
Alr, ty for the help
Just reading the top part is enought to understard the main part of dnd?
Im too lazy to read the whole thing
Kinda late, maybe tomorrow ill long onto and try it

Ok.
Of the free basic rules?
Do Playing The Game and Character Creation.
Oh yeah the character creation
Alr ty
How do I connect dnd beyond to discord?
Through Avrae? Go to #ddb-avrae-commands and run the Avrae help command: !help
Also I think you need to go to the DnDBeyond website and in your Account, connect your DDB account to your Discord account: https://www.dndbeyond.com/account
Clarification: Go to your DnDBeyond account (https://www.dndbeyond.com/account) and connect your account to your Discord account.
Then you can check what Avrae sees as your Discord account in #ddb-avrae-commands by typing !ddb and running that
hello, i am new to dnd , never played it my only experince with it is some vids i watched online and bg 2,3 , how can i start getting into it

Can roll dice, run initiative, and do quick rules/monsters/items/spells lookups
Hey everyone, just a quick question, Is there anyone willing to look at my character sheet to make sure ive done it right? I am a totally new D&D "Player", I say that in quotes because I havent played at all yet, and am looking to take the dive, but would hate to slow anyone down if my sheet is messed up.
sure, drop a link to your dnd beyond character sheet
Hope its ok I DM'ed you
its okay to send it here, more eyes the better
Thats fair, You said D&D Beyond character sheet. I am a little confused (like i said completely new 😩), But here is my 5e 2024 Character sheet - https://drive.google.com/file/d/18I-tkmS4Pb3gGprtzqLiqHLYWDXe1xFO/view?usp=drive_link
you have it on private where people need to request access
dnd beyond is the official dnd website in which you can make characters as well
how did you get your stats (nothing wrong with them just to verify you did it correctly)
Roll20 helped me out
mmh your stats do seem a bit odd
crap lol
cant quite reverse engineer how you got to them
helped out how?
this is exactly why i asked for someone to look it over lol I dont want to be an issue in a game
the norm for creating a character is 'point buy' you get 27 points with which you can buy stats then you add your background ability scores
your background ability scores you can pick between wisdom, constitution and intelligence. for a wizard you probably wanna do +2 int and +1 con
Intelligence was prioritized, followed by Dexterity and Constitution.
i would suggest the following stats
8 str, 14 dex, 14 (13+1 from background) con, 17 (15+2 from background) int, 12 wis, 10 cha
which is slightly higher then you have currently
this is going to sound REALLY Stupid so please forgive me, Higher is better yes?
in the case of stats yes
ideally youd have a 20 everywhere but sadly thats not possible
*quarterstaff can deal a d8 instead of a d6 when holding it in 2 hands. might not come up much but just so you know
also i suggested ticking the boxes for your skill proficiencies
Oh amazing!
I am waiting on the official book to be delivered, but couldnt wait any longer
high elf lets you pick 1 more skill proficiency between Insight, Perception, or Survival
well not specifically high elf but its from the elf part
(note you already have proficiency in insight from wizard right now, if you prefer a different skill from the wizard options you can pick insight from high elf instead)
you shouldnt have access to level 2 spells yet, that only comes at level 3
This i knew, I put them on so I wouldnt forget them lol, I will remove
last thing is maybe list what a feature does rather then just the name, give it a brief summary you can understand during fights. i suggest leaving out things like spellcasting/spellbook since those are usually not rules that need referencing to
i assume you know you can cast spells
I have a separate doc for my spells that show me what they do, what i need to cast them, they are all preparation spells as well
couple of things to fix but solid first attempt, just for summary
-take a look at the stats using a point buy calculator (you can just google it)
-quarterstaff damage dice and maybe mention unarmed strike does 0 damage
-look over your proficiencies
-check you have the right spells and cantrips, from both the wizard class and from your elf stuff
-last note about spells you have cantrip under 'notes' you could also write it as level 0 spells
-write out what your features do rather then the name
look at those things and youre all set, feel free to tag me if you want me to check again after revision though i will be asleep soon
amazing thank you so much for the help!
np, hope you will enjoy your first session
do you count all the things in all of your items in equipment for example the scholars pack has a Backpack, Book, Ink, Ink Pen, Lamp, 10 flasks of Oil, 10 sheets of Parchment, and Tinderbox.
Yup, you'd want to list those seperately in your inventory more than likely
so where can i find dnd playing
I definitely count the stuff in my inventory because I take option B for class and background and buy my own gear off the Adventuring Gear table

my character sheet version doesn't have an inventory slot what do i do
Is it printed?
If it's printed it'd be on the second page
otherwise if on roll20 or dndbeyond you need to switch to the inventory tab
where can i find a game
Please check #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a game

And by check we mean "read carefully"
no its not on the second page (check dm)
Hey y’all,
I have no clue what I’m doing even after reading the instructions
Imma sound like a cringe noob but how do I start
@luuk Care to give another look? I used D&D Beyond this time it was quite abit easier than Roll20 imo - www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Eldrin_Whisper_159075238.pdf
i feel the same way
after reading the character creation portion it should be relatively easy to make a character, but if youre struggling i suggest trying dnd beyonds character builder! it gives you tips along the way if you choose the setting also!
I agree the character builder was very simple to use and helped me every step of the way
I’m new to dnd please help me

👋 Hello adventurers!
evenin. let us know if you have questions
Hello chat
I’m new to DMing, and I’ve never had any playing experience, but my main focus right now figuring some homebrew stuff, which I’ll explain in that chat
Thank you!! I’ll try that and if I get stuck I’ll come back lol. Just at the car mechanics currently
i just used Channel Divinity: Divine Sense and discovered that a lot of the area around me is desecrated. What does that mean exactly?
Like generally
Generally, it means the area is filled with unholy power, as opposed to holy (concecrated)
I don't think there's a specific "desecrated" effect, but divine sense does give example of the Hallow -spell
So I'm new to dnd and after I played a couple one offs and Mabey start a campaign I wanted to DM for a couple of my friends who are also new and I was wondering what do I need in terms of maps like town maps continent maps
And battle map to make the experience interesting fun and easy to imagine I was also wondering if you have any tips for making editing or having baseplates to change and make maps on the fly
Is the online dnd community safe for like a 14 y/o? I think I'll try online as none of my friends are willing to play it plus I myself am new and can't play that good
I think it's reasonably safe, but also relies on a few rules, such as never giving out any information that could identify a user in real life. This server has a rule against stating a specific age, for example. An age range (such as "under 18") is fine.
I'd still look for a peer group, such as a game with other people under 18.
I see, and is it mandatory in groups to turn on the camera?
Also, please suggest some platforms for finding games. Thanks
No, camera depends on groups. They will either write it in the recruitment post or you can ask the DM.
You can try to find groups here: #find-a-game
There is also a google doc created by community member iamrazorwing that goes over other playes to look. It has an online section with lots of suggestions:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/
Let’s say as a new dm I give my players a magic item maybe they find it in a chest should I just explain ti them how it works or what’s a good way to help them understand what they found
I usually let them know that they have found something magical, without telling them how it works.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#IdentifyingaMagicItem
Some magic items are indistinguishable from their nonmagical counterparts, while others are conspicuously magical. Handling a magic item is enough to give you a sense that it is extraordinary, but learning a magic item’s properties isn’t automatic.
The Identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an item’s properties. Alternatively, you can focus on one magic item during a Short Rest while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, you learn its properties and how to use them (but not any curse the item might bear).
So for example the horn of silent alarm from book of xanathar just kinda let them inspect it and just give them notes of its function
Yeah, let them experiment with it
Some mystery helps keep magic items wondrous
Thank you
Yo chat can someone please help me I'm new ?
Sure, what do you need help with?
I'm making my character can you check it out ?
Sure!
Brb in 5 minutes
Thx for helping btw 🫂
Character Sheet: Strom Kael
- Race: Fire Genasi (gives him the glowing red eyes and fire resistance).
- Class: Fighter (Eldritch Knight) Level 5.
- Background: Noble (Knight of the Order).
- Alignment: Chaotic Good (He is a "good person" at heart, but his methods are violent and his personality is toxic).
Attributes & Personality
- Strength: 18 (Powerful build).
- Intelligence: 14 (Tactical, but blinded by rage).
- Charisma: 8 (Rude, arrogant, and loud).
- Scent: Warm Peaches (clashes hilariously with his terrifying aura).
- Personality Traits: "I speak at the top of my lungs." / "I am the strongest, and I will remind you of it every ten seconds."
- Ideals: Revenge. I will leave the world in ash if it means the dragons are gone.
- Flaws: I lose my temper the moment I am questioned. I am incredibly hateful toward anything that looks like a lizard.
Abilities & Combat (The "Solo Toolbox" Influence)
Using the logic from the book you provided, here are the mechanics for his "Red Lava" and "Furnace Aura" adapted for D&D:
-
Signature Weapon: Red-Gem Greatsword
-
Damage: 2d6 Slashing + 1d4 Fire damage.
-
Special: On a Critical Hit, the lava core leaks, dealing an extra 2d6 fire damage and melting the target's armor (reducing their AC by 1).
-
Signature Power: Red Lava (Burning Hands / Fireball)
-
Strom doesn't just "shoot fire"; he melts the environment. When he casts fire spells, the ground becomes "Difficult Terrain" because it turns into slag/lava.
-
Aura: Dread of the Furnace
-
Mechanical Effect: Any creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of Strom must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom Save or become Frightened until the start of their next turn.
-
The Dragon-Slayer Passive
-
Strom has "Advantage" on all tracking and history checks related to Dragons. He deals an extra 1d6 damage against Draconian enemies.
Is this good ?
I used Gemini to make the character giving it DND book
okay, so you AI generated this
oh yeah you said that, nvm
So, you have special abilities, which you dont normally have (the signature weapon, power, etc)
Oh I didn't know that I told Gemini to gen me a character based on my OC
That's on me
the best tip i have, is dont use AI
DnD beyond has a good help system if you create a character and check the box for help text
Oh but I want to use my OC is that fine ?
That is fine, you can play OCs in dnd as much as you want
thats the point of the game, even. You might need to buy fire genasi, but you can also play a fire goliath
goliath is free
Buy ????
not all of the dnd content is free
Wait how's the game is played in the first place like online is there like a software or something ?
Either online over VC, or irl with talking
you can use a VTT (virtual tabletop) for maps, or IRL you can also print maps out. You don't need maps to play
Oh so wait I have to use voice chat ? ?
Not necessarily there's also games through text. Vc is the most common option though
i myself play a lot of text dnd
Mmm nvm guys have a good day 👋🏻
I just saw the most interesting looking for players and just WISH i knew how to play to join

Yes
@dawn otter the rules are linked above, read them and feel free to ask questions
I have the basics down, and I have the how to play on my phone just in case, I just don't have any experience playing
But the post i read just sounds so fun on paper
just ask! if you know the basics, you should be good to go!
I do not think it is beginner friendly? Its based off an anime
It does not specify
What I'd do to not be a coward and just ask
i have my first game on tuesday i cant wait🥳🥳
just doing it at a local game store
99% of games are beginner friendly
^
Aye, most DMs tend to be fine with new players, assuming they at least have the general idea of the rules
Some exceptions would be if the campaign is heavy on some specific homebrew that benefits from more in depth knowledge, or if the cmapaign is especially difficult
Most games are super welcoming and accommodating to new players
I'd say like 40% of the posts are relatively new DMs
because most more experienced DMs have set groups
Mhm. Most experienced dms have already been deemed the “forever DM” (Meeeeee outside of the game store)
Forever DMs need to teach their players how to run. Unless you’re playing with total newbies, I don’t think there’s many groups where no one else will enjoy DMing
Most people are just intimidated by it. It does take work, but it’s not as bad as it often seems from the other side of the screen.
The only way to learn how to DM is to just say "screw it" and start DMing
You will make mistakes, but as long as everyone is having fun, it's all good!
You will develop your own style, you just gotta start doing it and you will find it
My personal DM style is to first and foremost tell a good story. I do not care about stats, encumbrance, etc. I will use monster stat blocks as GUIDELINES, but if someone does something super epic to try and land the finishing blow when the boss has 50 hp left, I'll let it happen. Or if my boss/strong monster is too squishy, I'll just pretend they have more HP so the players can do something cool
As long as my players are having fun, I'll let them do that cool thing... most of the time
"You want to jump over a 100 ft wide ravine? You're more than welcome to try but with how far it is, you may not reach the other side"
"You want to try to seduce the BBEG? Sure, go right on ahead and try" Casts Charm Person on the character so now THEY'RE seduced
Or I guess a more accurate way of portraying my style is "I will almost never say no. But if your action has consequence, the consequence may happen"
But obviously rule of cool still applies from time to time
Can I ask a question??
yes
What class and what race would be an ancient Greek philosopher??
I want to create a character based on a real life Greek philosopher
I feel like a Wizard would be a good fit or a College of Lore Bard
Could be many things
Bard, Wizard, even Cleric
could be anything really, but if you want to go with philospher= wise, then clerics, druids, rangers and monks stand out
^
Pretty sure the Sage background is basically a philosopher by itself
If you want to go for knowledgable, Wizard is your pick. If you want them to be a good talker, Bard. If you want them to be wise, Cleric, Druid, Ranger, etc.
Oh yeah Lore Bard might be a good pick
And race can be anything you want. Human is the obvious pick but any race can fit the description
Meanwhile race could be pretty much anything. could be human to go for just Greek, or could be a race like minotaur so you can go for greek myth vibes
knows lots of stuff, can convince people with their words
^
…Why 2017 specifically?
Since then, new edition was released in 2024, based on the previous 2014 one
a bunch of books came out, in 2024, there was a remaster
Thats about it, besides any new books that have come out in between
Its cool
Hello!!
hiii!!!
Hallo!
Anything I can help yall either?
im so new idek what i need help with lol 😭✋
I could help you get started on the rules?
Same TT
You two, read the first two chapters (Playing the Game and Character Creation) of the free basic rules, and ask any questions yall might face. Take your time.
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
#learn-to-play is also a good resource
Once yall are done with that, #find-a-game has information on how to find an online home via this server
okay i went through this already, ik the basics
Oh that’s great!
Have you made a practice character?
umm no, a few people told me DMs don't like premade characters and that I'd have to make one in like a session 0 to fit the campaign they're running.
making a character for practice is a good idea, even if its not the one you bring to a campaign
it helps you learn how the game works
Making a character for practice can be quite helpful
Helps you learn the process of making one
ahhh then imma try onee
Hi guys, I'm new to DND and I haven't played a single game yet,I want to but I just hadn't found anyone to play with
soo I saw this one guy on YouTube making one, he kept referencing a rule book, do y'all know where I can find one online?
Sameee!!!
Check out #find-a-game , reddit, dnd beyond forums or roll20.
Though learn the basics first if you haven’t already
That rulebook is likely the Player’s Handbook, which is available online in dnd beyond (gotta pay)
I haven't and thank you for that information
The free version, which is enough to make a character, is in the Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
But first what are the basics of DND?and what necessary things do I need before playing? Like is there a rule book? Dices? Or do I need to buy the whole set?
I consider the basics to be how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
There is a Players Handbook, but the Free Basic Rules is enough to start playing
You can use online dice or buy a set yourself if that’s what you prefer (I like having physical dice personally)
Oh okay, then I'm gonna buy dice, then next my character, I already have something in mind
Just know that a character concept may have to be changed to fit with a world
No punk rock sci-fi androids in a medieval high fantasy setting for example
Oh okay, I was thinking my first character would be like an alchemist, is there even an alchemist?
(Usually, at least)
There is an alchemist subclass!
okiokioki, imma try to make a character. imma report back when I'm donee hehehehe. (im so unoriginal so pls dont mind)
Just a warning tho it’s not free, you gotta buy the book for the Artificer class that has the Alchemist subclass
It’s just practice
Go for it
Oh that's gonna hurt
If you have a DM that has the book they can share
Else, you’ll have to reflavour things
Maybe a Creation Bard or a conjugation wizar-
Wait both those need books too…
Maybe stick with a regular wizard…
Well everything has a price if you think about it, but that's okay
And this is my backup anyways
imma go for a elf bard hehe
Noice, I have a eld bard concept I’ve always wanted to use
i jus love music man
I respect it
Yup
-# When a bard and a wizard love each other very much?
So here's what I learned the basics at least
A book to play DND
A character
Some dice
And other players to play with
Stats and the rolls
What else am I missing?
Oh okay
thats one option, you can also make a character on a paper sheet
well yeah, dnd beyond is a tool to help with various aspects of playing dnd, but its not required for it
I haven't even seen one in person
there are also fillable pdf sheets
imma print out a character sheets
you also technically dont need any books justs now. the basic rules are free
dudeee ts is exciting!!!
Really? Well I'm still gonna buy it but good to know, thank you
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 if you wanna take a look
thanks pal
-# DnD Beyoncé? Not familiar-
basically, DnD beyond is a website that has tools to make playing more convienient. you still need to find a group to play primarily
Oh that's gonna be a slight problem, I don't know anyone personally who knows DND let alone plays it
Maybe here I can find some
#find-a-game this server has ways to find games, yes. you can also check out websites like roll20.net or /lfg on reddit
This message I sent earlier should be enough
Alright alright I'll stop hehehe, sorry for laughing so hard hahah
Oh thanks guys
also if you have game stores in your area, check out if anyone is running a game
and of course you can always try to rope friends and family into learning the game
I know some, not just near me
I'm already trying with my friends
Like I hook one of them to one of my fandoms and they became a die hard fan
cookie bear if you don't mind me asking, where you frm?
Well um Asia
I'm not comfortable yet to say where exactly just Asia
And where are you from? If you don't mind too?
ooh same, im Indian
Wait really?well I have someone to connect too from here
huh
Nevermind just surprised
bro character creation is so complicated 😭
reading over the player handbook rn and are you supposed to just remember all of it or are you meant to have the book handy and flip over it whenever you need something?
Is it really? I haven't tried it yet
Here’s a guide if you want it
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
You have your sheet with you, so anything important will be there
You’re not meant to remember everything dw
It can be a bit overwhelming the first time, but once you understand its not that hard
Hardest step is the first one
Well then I'm gonna create my first character now
Good luck
Wise words
Thanks brb, or maybe I will be back tomorrow
Oh I’m gonna go sleep now, so I’ll see you tmr too
Try dndbeyond, it can help, but only if you first understand what everything means.
just curious, can you add your own flavour to combat in roleplay? i know a lot of combat comes down to chance and modifiers, but say i was a character wielding a massive sword (yes it is a berserk reference). can i say "with all my might and power, i swing my sword creating a large thud as it craters into the floor" and roll, or do you leave that to the DM
or maybe you can say "i ATTEMPT to swing my sword"
