You should start with reading the free basic rules and characetr creation guide. It will get you started on the mechanics of the game, what you can expect and how role playing generally works. You're also welcomed to ask questions you have here as you learn.

i just started dungeons and dragons and i was chosen to be dm, i need help with how to organize my party's characters and how combat works in detail

wheat crystal
#

In summary, whenever you decide combat is initiated:

  • The DM determines where everyone is (battlemaps help with this a lot)
  • All combatants roll initiative
  • Each participant gets their turn in order according to their initiative result.
  • When the last participant in the order finishes their turn, a new round starts and repeats starting from the first person
#

And could you specify what you mean by ā€œorganize your player characters?ā€ Do you mean how to store their sheets or how to guide your players in making one or something else?

# shut cedar hello! new player here. wanted to learn/play at some point. anyone got advice?

Welcome! I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!

Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)

Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)

If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group

What is a Dungeon Master?
  • In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

D&D Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:

Embrace the shared story.

D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.

It’s not a competition.

The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.

Be fair and flexible.

Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.

Modify the adventure to suit your tastes.

Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.

Don’t worry about mistakes.

Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

Abilities

All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.

Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.

Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.

  • Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
  • Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
  • Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.

After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

Bladesinging: Eldritch Knight without Eldritch Knight
Chronurgy: Turn back time and also go Za Warudo

Conjuration: Make new stuff
Divination: Gather information
Enchantment: Charisma without Charisma
Evocation: MASTER SPARK!!!!
Illusion: Make stuff, but it's also fake, and trick people, but without Charisma
Necromancy: Minion summoner class
Transmutation: Turn stuff into other stuff
War Magic: Also not be squishy for once, but with more endurance and less shields

can you have more than one subclass? how do you obtain the subclasses? do they just become a path option after you level up?

wheat crystal
#

You can only have one subclass per class. They're gained at certain levels:

  • Using the 2014 rules, the level you gain your subclass is class-dependent. For example, Clerics get theirs at level 1 while Wizards get theirs at level 2.
  • Using the 2024 rules, all classes get their subclasses at level 3.

Either way once you get your subclass it will continue to give you features at certain levels depending on your class

That makes sense thank you!! I think I'm alright to prep for a session, I just thought we got to a point in the campaign where I need to start working on the plot, I've got many ideas but they don't really have a structure.
Next session they're going to get to one of the big cities of the world so I though I need to start thinking about the main lore so I can start giving them breadcrumbs, if that makes sense

Hey guys, just bought the new starter set, and next week i will have my first session as a dm (tried to dm another time, but it went pretty bad). The main problem that i have (because all of us are first timers) is that they stay on their phone whenever they aren't in action. I was thinking to give them some minor roles, but it will keep them more imersed in the game
-One player to note the dungeons and the thing that we didnt do in them
-One to keep all the treasure and share it at a safe point so that they wont fight over it
-One to keep track of quests and npc
-One to note funny stuff that happened
I think this will make them more involved, and it will be easier to remeber what happened last session. Plus, it gets me some stuff off my chest. What do you think?

New players sometimes have ... interesting ... preconcieved notions about what D&D is about. In these instances, it's good to have a firm hand as a DM and say "this game doesn't include these topics".

If you have more time, I recommend a session 0, where you actually go over the topics that are acceptable.

visual vapor

Yep, my first session will be a session 0, so that i wont have to deal with any of this stuff. And at least these guys know absolutly nothing, so i hope they wont come with this...stuff. they heard the story about that individual tho

I have another question, this time about roleplaying. I like to do descriptive roleplaying, but i dont want my players to feel forced to do the same. Do you guys think that a hybrid thing will work? echo kelp
#

So when you're creating your character sheet, you use one of the methods above to generate your core ability scores

stark cedar
#

Ok

echo kelp
#

So looking at the standard array option, let's say you stick the 15 into your strength score. Without anything else, that would make your strength modifier a +2.

#

That's because for every 2 points above 10, you add a +1.

#

So a 15 score would mean a +2 modifier

#

It also works the other way - an 8 intelligence score would mean a -1 modifier

#

Back to the strength score example - if your character needed to make a strength check, you would roll a d20 and add your strength score modifier (the +2) to the end result.

#

Does that make sense?

No one here has the time to show everyone the full thing but here's a few basic things
All u realy need for a character is there class, subclass, bacround and species, out of the 3 class is by far the most important one
There are a few different classes with different levels of difficulty but the hardest ones arnt that difficult to pick up
The levels are basically:
Martial, theas have no spells, this includes barbarian, fighter, rouge and monk (which is slightly more difficult to play)
Then half casters which are slightly more difficult which are ranger, palidin and warlock (which is also slightly more complex)
After that u have all of the full casters

There are 2 main versions of the game, the 2024 rules are considered the main ones in dnd beyond but are made to be backwards compatible with the 2014 or "legacy" options

I would recommend using dnd beyond
There are free rules on there but u only get 1 subclass per class with it if u want more u will have 2 get the books (I would recommend getting the digital versions if u want it)

echo kelp
#

Or DnDBeyond copies…
DnDBeyond does sell physical + digital combos. That said buying the book on one platform does not give you access to that book on other platforms. If you know your group will enjoy and be using Roll20 extensively, then I’d buy it for that platform.

#

If you’re new to D&D generally though I’d suggest using the free basic rules first before investing in books.

other than the cost of printing paper, and getting dice, and pencils, you can play d&d free. completely free. there's plenty of pdf files released for the 2014 rules on DMsGuild and DriveThruRPG that are free. there's also the free Basic Rules v1.0 pdf or SRD v5.1 for free. or if you want to be tied to a device, DnDBeyond has the 2024 basic rules as an exclusive through their platform, but it is free.

two full sets for the DM. 1 full set for each potential player, so that brings to 8 or 9 full sets. then you have an extra communal set, and an extra fancy communal set for those really important rolls. and an extra set just in case. total of 12 sets.

if you want easier to understand, you can search for the Essentials Kit rulebook pdf on google. Wizards of the Coast has a free pdf of it, the actual link through clicking on the site is really convoluted to get through. i find it much easier to find the one on wizards media server through google. that is about 66 pages, a part of that is purely spells. but keep in mind it uses the 2014 rules.

And I've heard about how DND can get a little complicated with math and stuff. And I kinda suck at math besides basic math. Hi, I have a question regarding DnD beyond, I know I need to buy the books to build characters and stuff, but is that a digital book or the physical book?

DnDBeyond sells digital books although they also offer physical + digital bundles.

scarlet copper

Does that mean that if I buy the physical book I still have to buy the digital to use DnD beyond?

Correct as they are separate products

And if you buy the book on Roll20, you'd only get the Roll20 version of the book, not a physical book nor access to the DnDBeyond digital book.

Do you obtain it during a campaign or before? I noticed that the different armor types had costs. Sorry if this sounds stupid.

hearty blaze

No such thing as a stupid question.
You can ask your DM if you can have armor beforehand, else you’ll need to obtain it during the campaign.

#

Remember you have unarmoured defence, so depending on your build you can function or even prefer going unarmoured

Thanks! If I went unarmored the entire campaign, would I put the stats (10 armor class + dexterity modifier + constitution modifier) in my armor class spot? That’s what I had previously. Or would I just keep the number in mind and leave the spot empty in case I decided to obtain armor later on?

Stats for unarmored defense, I mean.

As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

hearty blaze
# hollow orbit Hello, I am trying to get a group of around 5-6 people including me to start a d...

I’d also add to the above tips to have a Session 0 (a session where everyone gathers, discuss the campaign, bring up table boundaries and sets expectations, as well as collaborate to make characters), as well as to not overly script the story. Remember: don’t prep a book, prep scenarios; you don’t write a story, your characters live it. On that note, don’t overprep, improvising is an important part of dnd too.

#

Oh, and communicate any issues

How to make a character is obviously important, basic ability checks is the main times you roll dice, modifiers are learnt when you learn ability checks, knowing at least one class means you know what you can do, and combat is the third major cornerstone of dnd (exploration, combat, roleplay).

wheat crystal
#

Yup the first 2 sections of the Basic Rules cover all of that. You don’t have to read the entire document, especially if you have an idea of the kind of character you want to play

#

No need to read into all 20 levels of Wizard and all the spells if you want to play a Fighter, for example

unkempt spade
#

I feel like my decision of dming for a small group of two friends on a voice call is stupid, due to me having played literally 10 or less hours of dnd, I've done 3? sessions of a campaign before it was cancelled (all we got to do was investigate (missing person), find a way to travel to a place to get more information and start traveling) and a oneshot that was like improvised by our dm on the spot, where I barely did anything because we were literally like 5-6 people and everytime there was something you could roll for everyone would go LET ME DO IT TOO

but I feel like it's hard to find a discord server where you can find campaigns or just oneshots, I've been trying for a while, when I finally did it was 18+ or turned 18+ a few months after I joined. And most times a stranger / someone I've not talked much with messages me, and I warn them I am a minor, they proceed to just ghost me instead of saying "oh sorry, I'm not comfortable with that"

#

I have the handbook, idk the name, it's the rest one with like basic rules, classes and that sort of stuff

#

but ive never read it, i literally don't know any rules and I will probably just make most things up as i go when it comes to rules

#

hey guys, i just got into dnd with a couple of my friends (were all inexperienced including the dm) and i want to see if its possible to create a certain character. after scrolling throught the classes and races (for the 2014 version) i was wondering if its possible to make a monk that can see the future? i heard you can do it with a wizard.

hearty escarp
#

Seeing into the future is quite limited in the game. You're right, the divination wizard is sort of geared towards that, but it mostly boils down to some predetermined dice outcomes.

Monks don't really have any future vision features as far as I remember.

There is a spell that do something like that: Augury - it's basically reading bones to determine something about the future. It's a druid, wizard and cleric spell.

Fireball is a classic Wizard spell

It’s also on other classes’ spell lists, but yeah

wheat oxide

So why aren't sorcerers also associated with "I CAST FIREBALL?" /gen

wheat crystal
#

I’ve seen them associated it with them too, as well as anyone who gets/has access to the spell. There’s not really a definitive answer since it’s just a community meme

wheat oxide
#

I assume it's because sorcerers don't get spell sculpt? I know only evoker wizards get spell sculpt, but they are still wizards ig

wheat crystal

Sorcerers also get ways to manipulate spells

#

As before there’s no 100% definitive answer since it’s both a meme made by the community as well as one that’s very old

Apparently every wizard stereotype really only applies to evokers

#

Since you have a background with BG3 a lot of it will feel familiar to you already. That being said there are enough important differences that its still worth it to give the Basic Rules a read through

Dunno if this will help aid understanding, but D&D uses, and has always used, what's called the Vancian magic system: https://dungeonsdragons.fandom.com/wiki/Vancian_magic_system
Cantrips are a later addition to the game and function as an "always on" ability, cast at will, unlimited uses, no resources - you can think of them as "minor spells" with a correspondingly lesser effect compared to Spells

As Mr Smith says, the core of it is the idea that while you may know, say, 10 spells, you can only choose to cast, say, 5 of those, forcing the spellcaster to anticipate what they may or may not need for the coming day, and it's also indirectly a way to keep a lid on PC spellcaster power

Here's my stock answer:

Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!

There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .

Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.

There's guides of course but the truth of the matter is that a good chunk of spells are actually situational too

#

Stuff like Sorcerer, Warlock or Bard is more fire and forget where you pick a series of spells and forget about it until you level up, whereas classes like Wizard, Cleric or Druid allow you to swap spells on the fly

#

So those classes have more flexibility but you do need to know when to change spells to draw out their full power

I know a gist of it. I played with my friends but we all died on level 2

In person. I was the dm. But I'm not that good so my character died and my friend's

severe blade
#

thats nice, i want a way to play online so its easier to keep tabs on things

dapper patio
#

I am not that aware of the CR or character rating and i made the boss to be ettin. Which has tons of damage.

#

You can play in roll20 site and i think you can play on dnd and beyond. But i only explored roll20 so far

wild onyx
#

One way to judge the threat is look at the damage a creature can do compared to the Hit Points of the characters.

dapper patio
#

Yah we fought an ettin

#

CR 5 for two level 2 characters

#

Lol he has multiattack, ended us with one attack each

#

What i cant understand is how the battle works

lavish kayak
lavish kayak
dapper patio

I made a character because that is my first time. I thought we can make it through the campaign since i am controlling the boss, noc and story

#

It seems like i am not good at being a dm

lavish kayak

dapper patio
dapper patio

And what is the 1/4 1/8 and 1/2 CR

lavish kayak

same here but subtract 15 years

wild onyx

Each of the vultures stopped being a threat when it died. The ettin is still a threat at 1 HP or 100.

dapper patio
#

What are their uses?

lavish kayak
dapper patio
#

I mean the CR 0 is for pets where you can tame using AH right?

lavish kayak
#

no?

#

you cant just tame animals with a check

#

thats like walking up to a dog, saying hi there and its now your pet

dapper patio
#

Oh. I thought we can. I let my friend tame a black bear cub.

#

I made it so that he is like attuning on the bear cub. Like there are level of trust before taming it.

lavish kayak
#

find familiar, that lets you summon a friendly cr 0 creature

dapper patio
#

Oh, so a cantrip or spells can do that. The. After finding that familiar, how do we tame it?

lavish kayak
#

find familiar summons a tamed one

#

you (normally) cant walk up to an animal and tame it

#

its a level 1 spell btw

dapper patio
#

So the animal handling is just how you will able to command the animal like riding a sleigh with dogs pulling it?

lavish kayak
#

yup, or calming an animal down for example

dapper patio
#

Oh. I see. Thank you. It makes it clearer for me now. I am sorry. But I am confused about spell levels work

lavish kayak
#

alright, so you basically have these slots

#

see them like circles, each level getting bigger

#

every spell is a fitting circle

#

cantrips are the smallest size, and their hole is infinite

#

for higher level spells, theres a certain amount of holes per size

dapper patio
#

Yes i see it. But as a high elf. You can get magic initiate which is a free spell if i understand it correctly right? Is it like just for level 1 spells?

lavish kayak
dapper patio
#

So if i use level 2 spell. I need 2 spell slots?

lavish kayak
#

no, you need a level 2 spell slot

dapper patio
#

I am sorry if I'm this dumb. But how would you know if it it level 2? Is there like an indicator?

lavish kayak
#

it would say on your sheet

#

in the hole example, the hole would be bigger

dapper patio
#

I am using dnd 5e character sheet on roll20 let me pull it up so i can see where you're referring

lavish kayak
#

you cant embed links here

#

but in the spells section, there should be slots

#

the thing with digital sheets is that it doesnt show stuff you dont have

dapper patio
#

I am not going to embed links. I just wan to navigate it while you are explaining things. Thank you

#

So the level. Is this like the part where it says "1ST"

lavish kayak
#

yup

#

thats a 1st level slot

dapper patio
#

Then i can seel that i can toggle 3 spell slots at level 2 druid.

#

So i can only use level 1 spells? 2nd levels are all unavailable to me?

lavish kayak
#

yes

#

you get level 2 spells at druid level 2

dapper patio
#

Oh thank you about that. But what if I get a skill that is higher level than what I can cast?

lavish kayak
#

you cant

#

you cant get level 2 spells at level 2 druid

#

I’m new to dnd and want to learn how to play

dapper patio

Oh. I see. Thank you for that.

exotic remnantBOT
dapper patio
#

Thank you alfiz. How about the cantrips? Since it has no slots. If I use a cantrip with action casting time. Can I still use my action?

hearty blaze
#

Most (if not all) cantrips will take the Magic action to cast

lavish kayak
#

nope, you still use the action

hearty blaze
#

Also mornin folks

wild onyx
#

The advantage of cantrips is they don't run out. You can cast them all day.

dapper patio
#

Take the magic action? So let's say i use guiding bolt as cantrip, i can't use the entagle as level 1 spell?

dapper patio
hearty blaze
#

And to answer your question, no, as both take an action to use, and you only have one action per turn

dapper patio
#

Oh. I see. I was confused about the spells and cantrips. Guiding bolt is a 1st level spell. So how about guidance. Can i cast it on myself as a cantrip then attack using dagger with finesse?

hearty blaze
dapper patio
#

I am confused because alfiz said that i can still use my action

#

I understand now

hearty blaze
hearty blaze
dapper patio
hearty blaze
#

Alfiz meant the spell still consumes your action (which you only get one of per turn)

dapper patio
#

So if I use shillelagh, i can use my club to attach on the same turn? Since shillelagh consumes 1 bonus action

dapper patio
#

So every turn. One action, one bonus action, one reaction and one free action?

hearty blaze
#

Free object interaction, not free action

#

VERY important difference

dapper patio

Oh, object interaction like equipping weapons or unequipping it, right?

dapper patio

Play by post? I am curious about that. Where can I find one?

Then no, this is not the best server to find that as we only allow official D&D games (e.g. a player can join using a character from the free basic rules or from official D&D books).
