This section in the Basic Rules goes over d20 Tests (and skill checks) more formally:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#D20Tests
?tag new skills
Skill Proficiencies
Most ability checks involve using a skill. The skills are shown on the Skills table, which notes example uses for each skill proficiency as well as the ability check the skill most often applies to. The DM has the ultimate say on whether a skill is relevant in a situation.
If a creature is proficient in a skill, the creature applies its Proficiency Bonus to ability checks involving that skill. Without proficiency in a skill, a creature can still make ability checks involving that skill but doesn’t add its Proficiency Bonus.
This has more info on skills
The table for how much stats affect your modifiers is here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Hope that helps
Thank you! Also a another question, I noticed in the rules of the server it was important to not share personal info (completely understandable & agree!) Though it did come to mind, are you allowed for example, if you would like the group within a age range when setting up a game would that be allowed to get requested? Like 16-19 for example, would that be allowed to put in on the information of the game since it's a general age range or does that go against the personal info rule?
An age range is fine I believe, but you can’t ask people for their specific age. And I’m unsure if 16-19 is large enough of a range, you may have to ask #moderator-support
No worries! Thank you for helping out
what's your name aswell if you don't mind? You seem quite nice!
how do i join a like 15+ server
Well, my name is, dramatic reveal,
Nugget.
Check out #looking-for-community , maybe they’ll say smt there
That's awesome! LOL, I did figure but wanted to ask incase
I don’t know im allowed to say even if i wanted to
But the people on the server know me by Nugget
Makes sense! I'm guessing you mean your actual name when you say this? Since I promise it was meant for a online name 🙏
& as you shouldn't! Online safety is key LOL, besides it's fun getting to use different names
Also hi!
I'm Rain aswell!
Hi Rain aswell, I’m Nugget
The people around here will tell you I do that on the regular
I absolutely love the vibe you have LOL
Side question too! What would you say has been your favourite game of DnD your either apart of or have been involved in?
I’d say it’s my current campaign!
I’m DM’ing for it, and a lot of my players are new, but it’s a ton of fun. I have a session tomorrow, actually!
The players are gonna have their first boss fight
-# I CANT EFFING WAIT
Oh, and thank you very much. Have a cookie! 🍪
OOOOO LOVE THAT!!!!! What's been the story of the campaign? What's it been like? & thank you very much for the cookie!🍪 have a flower in return 💐
Basically, they started in a town in the outskirts of the Frostbourne Tundra, but discovered a young girl in the snow. After taking her back to the village for care, she (who was cursed) started the equivalent of a zombie outbreak. The party fled, and encountered a weakened proxy of the villain, who had murdered the town guard and cursed the girl. After a quick scuffle, they were rescued by the Frostbourne Castke and became elite mercenaries, and are now exploring the mystic Forest to look for Archmage Serania Erewood. However, as she is currently cursed, the defence system of the mystic forest went haywire and the players are gonna fight phantoms of their past, the people who have caused them the greatest internal turmoil.
Oops wall text
(Btw people who have caused internal turmoil doesn’t just mean people who have wronged them, one of them is a dead lover)
But anyway! That’s not the topic of this channel, so I’ll stop here for any coming beginners to ask any questions.
This sounds AWESOME!!!!!! I absolutely love the story you've all been working with! Definitely a out of there question but with most players being new would you consider another player joining throughout the game? Of course I doubt tomorrow if it's a boss battle but overall I mean!
Unfortunately no
Unless you move to Australia and somehow make friends with the table
Ah that makes sense LOL, no worries! I'd definitely love to visit Australia though!
I recommend reading through #find-a-game if you haven’t already for information on finding an online game though!
Thank you! I have definitely looked before though I think most of the games were either full or for more experienced players at the time so I spooked away a little
but I have thought about trying it again!
Helloooooo
Hallo
Hiii
I think im a bit slow. Im new to dnd so i went to #looking-for-players to look for a game and i accidentally messaged the bot instead of the dm😭
So far i haven’t gotten a response from any of the dms
Oh mb
Saying under 18 is the safe term 🙏
Yup!
No worries though! Mistakes happen
Oh btw, plz check DM’s
Just checked LOL, will reply!
As a dhampir do i ignore this limitation?
"Just had a dnd "confrontation" turns out spider climb and climb are different in that "A Climb Speed can be used in place of Speed to traverse a vertical surface without expending the extra movement normally associated with climbing. See also “Climbing” and “Speed.”"
NO MORE CEILINGS JUST WALLS. AS CEILINGS ARE HORIZONTAL"
Since it's spider climb I can still use ceilings right?
Yes, just a small note normally a climbing speed doesnt just allow you to scale any wall only 'climable' walls
Stuff like climbing a tree, scaling a rock wall. You can climb a smooth surface with normal climbing speed
*cant
Someone's trying to claim I'm doing my climb wrong but dhampir with spider climb don't need to worry about that right?
You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed. In addition, at 3rd level, you can move up, down, and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings, while leaving your hands free.
Yeah this someone quoted at me and needed reconfirmation that I'm not playing wrong.
Thank you.
No problem
heys guys im new to dnd, and i wanna know if we can play online and offline
i have the set thningy
If you wanna play offline youd have to either find a local game store or similar place that hosts games or make your own dnd group.
If youre looking for online games check out #looking-for-players
thanks

Is D&D beyond a good app to use?
It's very convenient if you don't mind the digital license approach.
Okay cool thanks
#character-discussion is a good place for that, you could link it there if you're using something like D&D beyond's sheets
Okay thanks, how do I get the link?
Unfortunately I have no idea, I don't use Beyond
Alr I’ll just Google it
On the final sheet there’s a share button right next to the long/short rest bar
Is there a spear magic item where ur works like kratos drapnir where u can call it back and tp to ur hand after being trow?
hi, sorry this is such a big ask, but does anyone have a spare character sheet i can copy for a lvl 3 support? i'm usually dm-ing but have joined a group where i'm a player, annd domn't really have the time to properly put in the effort to make a character of my own
sorry again, any help would be appriciated
Sure, here's Mani: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/94809091/pjl1aH
sorry, but do you know a support?
Nope, that's the only level 3 in my current stable. But you should be able to put together a level 3 pretty quickly in DDB.
ddb?
D&D Beyond, the website.
Hello guys Im new to dnd, what are minis for and how do they work? Im kinda confused on how it works that the minis you get from a box are random and why
Minis are for a visual representation of your character for if your going into a buildings, or for fighting monsters. The random box thing though I don't know how that works. I'm also new to D&D but I know a little
So its just for visuals and doesnt really affect the game? Its kinda irritating because the minis being random doesnt make sense for me
Miniatures are a token, like a chess piece, a visual representation of your character, and other characters, in a physical space, so you know who's where. If you're talking about minis you get in a starter set, those are ofc generic and random, but many will make or buy custom minis of their character if playing at an IRL table. But even digital tabletops have minis, where they're called tokens.
Okay thanks that makes sense
As for "affect the game" your position certainly does, because of range of effects, attacks, movement, etc. But even at an IRL table, your character could be represented by a button, or a thimble, or a pen cap. Minis are just a fancier, potentially personalized token.
hey, im new. playing a whole homebrew ish dnd with friends. i keep rolling under 5. i need prayers 😭
Hey guys! I need a bit of advice as a DM. I am a DM with a few months of experience and generally know how to make campaigns and the rules, but most of the people I play with are newbies. I'm wanting to make a Stranger Things D&D campaign, and don't necessarily know where to start. What should I do?
There is an entire stranger things adventure books that came out recently. You can see details here: https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/category/4704000?pid=D4704000
But could very likely find a physical copy at your local game stores or bookstores.
I have a question when I’m creating a new character for a new campaign and when I’m writing the backstory of my character should I do that with the dm or i should just send it to him?
hello apologis i had to recharge my brain
Im afraid its not a solid answer, because it would be up to the DM.
Imo, most dont mind you making a backstory independently and then sharing it with them, however, some DMs might have homebrew features or ideas and want some integration with you.
I think they would tell you ahead of time if they require being involved in the process.
Things I would avoid: making an overly long backstory - a few sentences can be enough. Maybe a paragraph.
Giving your character a bunch of "powers" in their background story thus trying to shoehorn them into the present character. Likely you are starring at a low level, you shouldn't be killing a god as a level one (extreme example)
If you want to develope a longer backstory for your own process that is totally cool. I just wouldnt expect a dm to read through 5 pages
Or even one
Isn’t that better for them though I am a very detailed writer not in dnd just in fantasy in general I think idk having more is always better than having less.
By all means, write away, submit all that upon request - if they ask for more, give them more. Start with a summary, three sentences or less.
And go from there
The character I want to write is a reborn so should I leave how he got back to the dm and just make my character kinda forget how ?
This is all so dependent on the DM to be honest.
I would like Dunnik and Calamity said, start with a summarised version that outlines the core of your character, and then the DM can either ask or you can offer more.
Most of it will just be background information for you to help play the character some DM's like incorporating backstory, whereas others prefer to tell the story at the table and the backstory have less of an impact.
Hai!
Welcome to the server!
Guys I need some info about Calligrapher's Supplies usage on a none magic class like a Monk for ex that has Magic Initiate
I've seen that it allows you to craft scrolls but the most interesting part is the Spellbook copying
Copying a Scroll into a Spellbook. A Wizard spell on a Spell Scroll can be copied into a spellbook. When a level 1 spell is copied in this way, the copier must succeed on a DC 11 Intelligence (Arcana). On a successful check, the spell is copied. Whether the check succeeds or fails, the Spell Scroll is destroyed.
So how does this work, can you even use this on a class that isn't a Wizard?
And how do you make the scrolls in this case, I assume you can only make cantrips and level 1 spell scrolls that are available from Magic initiate?
Also doesn't that mean Wizards can have access to every single spell in the game by just copying them into their spellbook given someone makes the scrolls for them?
and being lucky enough with the arcana DC roll of course
hi
I have a question? Is there other servers to find games? Like how else do people find games outside this discord(feel free to ping)
Yes, Wizards can potentially get every wizard spell someday, if they manage to find the scrolls/spellbooks/have enough money for it
Sorry to ask, I’m just trying to figure out optimal ways to find games and stuff
I have never tried this but have seen it listed by others as a good source. https://startplaying.games/
I’ve seen it too. I was looking more for discords server
Hello, I've never played D&D and am reading about it.
I understand there is a rulebook and such but would any of you recommend the best way to know more about it?

hey, check out these link to get started. the basic rules are free so you dont have to get the whole printed rulebook to learn more
#find-a-game has a number of DMs looking for players with some servers listed. I would like to run a game but have no experience running one online. I know it is challenging.
The free rules are all you need to get going. I find Ginny Di's beginner video helpful for new players. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNNBjVmNbQI&list=PLsmjZYZs1ps05jkN5u6yJ9j6G_8JLut6Z
Ginny is what got me here. Her video was amazingg.
Seems simple enough to get started. Role book it is.
Thank you so much!
Servers for virtual tabletops and D&D YouTubers often have LFG sections. Otherwise, search using Discord's Explore function or scroll through these: https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/wiki/discord/
Also here: https://pnpnews.de/ (Set the language to English.)
Bruh Apparently I can craft them somehow but can't use them as I do not have them as class spell list (magic initiate list doesn't count sadly) therefore I'd be handing them to wizard ally if there is one
that's so silly that you can make but you can't use them
Hello everyone! I don't know much about DnD yet, but I'm interested to learn more and maybe join an online group to play?
I had one session with some friends many years ago, but we never got together again and I don't remember much 😅 though I still got my dice somewhere!
Otherwise my only other experience is playing Baldur's Gate 3, though I don't know how close that comes to the real DnD?
I also started watching Vox Machina and The Mighty Nine recently. 😊
Hope, that I can learn more through this server 🥰
Glad to have ya on the team!
BG3 is pretty close in the broad strokes. It's based on 5th edition, you start to see differences in class features and rules interactions. They change it to make it more video game friendly, if you know what I mean.
Hi I’m new to the game and have no idea how to play could some guide me trough the rules pls
Good to know! Yeah, I can imagine that you have to alter some things when switching to another medium. I'm curious to see which things are similar and which are different 😊
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
I have and I’ve made a character but I’m still confused on how a campaign works and what the dice do
-# well the rules explain what the dice do, but anyhow
Are you familiar with skill checks?
No clue what those are I haven’t even played a campaign yet
Basically, for skill checks you roll a d20, and then add your modifier on that. That modifier is determined by your stats (every 2 stats away from 10 you get a +1, so a 16 is a +3), and if you’re proficient in the skill you add your proficiency modifier. This proficiency bonus is dependent on your level. If your roll meets or beats the Difficulty Class determined by your DM, then you complete the skill check.
I think I understand
For example, if I was a level one paladin with 14 charisma and proficiency in intimidation, and was trying to intimidating someone to scram, I’d have a +4 to my roll.
Because a 14 is a +2, and the proficiency bonus at level 1 is +2
And, say, if the Difficulty Class was 15, I’d have to roll an 11 or higher
Then it deducts from your roll
So say my strength is ten so I have a -1 and I roll a 20 to kill a pack of whatever it’s actually a 19
hello
Well…no.
First of all, a score of ten is +0. Secondly, when attacking we don’t refer to it as a skill check but rather an attack roll, which uses Armour Class instead of a Difficult Class.
Thirdly, a natural 20 automatically hits
Greetings
Oh ok so say my armor class is 9 how’s that works
That means any enemy attacking you only needs to roll a 9 or above after modifiers to hit you
guys how do i know i got accepted in a looking for players thread?
The DM will tell you
like 2 days ago i chatted in the thread and with the dm but they never responded so idk when or where the campaign starts or if it already started
oups not two days, yesterday
You’ll just need to wait
If they don’t get back to you, you likely weren’t accepted, though they should tell you
But it hasn’t been long enough to say
oh ok
I'm pretty new to D&D. I've only played a couple of times with friends. But I really enjoyed it. They play a weekly game but I always have to work at that time. I'd like to find a regular game online but I have no idea how to do that.
I recommend checking out #find-a-game to get info on how to play online!
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
yeah, I checked that channel out but there aren't any posts that I can see other than the bot welcome
Hmmm…
Are you planning on playing as a player or Dungeon Mastee?
definitely as a palyer. I barely know the rules. Still learning
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.

(and thank you to Mr Smith for writing this once, the info is great)
ahhhh
my name is randy greenbottle .
ok! thank you! I'll do that
Gooooood morning afternoon evening, Randy, how are ya
i am doing wonderfully on this fine evening what about you my delightful friend
Absolutely spiffling! I have the great fortune to have a dnd session later to day, which I am STOKED about.
do u have any eamples of such servers
Hiiii everybody! First of all, havent been on discord in a few years. Second, I've played baldurs before (Like the smallest amount) AND lastly, Im so new and confused!! Any suggestions on creating a character for the first time?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Choose a class that interests you, though know some are more complex than others (though the class you like is the best)
Also, https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character is a guide for character creation.
Oh, and feel free to ask any questions you may have
Oh my gosh!! Thank you sooo much. I've already read all the rules throughly so THANK YOU! I will look into the character creation.
Feel free to pop into #character-discussion for input and advice!
"I've already read all the rules thoroughly"
You're off to a good start
Please I have a question, so if I create a character do I always use them in any game/Champaign I join
You'd usually want to make a character specifically for a campaign
So I first have to be apart of a Champaign?
Generally yes, but lots of people create characters for fun outside of games
Okay thanks but can those characters eventually be used ingame
You may have to adjust them to fit the DMs chosen setting but yes
Noted, thanks, now all I have to do is wait
I need suggestions an input!
Should I choose Aasimar or Warforged for artificer. Cool/lore reasons only por favor.
Both are cool thooooo
I always liked warforged artficiers tho
How do I find a group in my city😞
You can play online. Or try game stores
Okk, tysm
Libraries, game shops, and conventions are going to host in person games.
You can also use online platforms (Facebook, MeetUp, NextDoor, Reddit) to search locally.
im trying to find methods of finding games, so thanks for the help everyone who helped.
does any have other examples of servers to find games
by chance
The guide linked in my bio has a bunch of places to look. That might help.
i cant find the list of dnd servers it shows me german servers
On desktop, click the "EN" in the upper right corner, then select "English" in the language drop-down menu. No clue what it looks like on mobile.
oh thanks, im trying to figure out best ways to find games. would this server be good to find games solely without any other discords
It's one option, but if you have more lines out in the water, the better your odds of a catch!
Can I join any dnd beyond campaign
Hi I’m new how’s everyone
can you maybe dm me some good servers? to save the time
How do I create my first character
Hey guys was wondering if someone or a group could help me learn dnd ive been meaning to get into it for a while now but never really had the time until lately
message me to learn more about dnd i teach people on the weekends, also this server itself has really good guides on how to make characters

If I decide to homebrew a story, do I make my own rules as DM or do I have to follow the original rules of DnD?
The rules of DnD are a framework
typically it's a mix of both.. you can homebrew some rules for sure.. but if you entirely use your own rules and none from D&D then you aren't really playing D&D
Whichever way you want
You can do whatever you choose, it’s your game.
OKAY THANK YOU!!!
Also curious about something, how are magical items handed out? Does one stick to what the campaign module advises you to give out, or could you give out anything in theory within reason?
It’s whatever you choose to do! If yoj end up over powering your players by giving them too much magical loot then you can just make encounters harder
The good old, lets just throw a lich riding a flying tarrasque at the problem solution
Magic items are typically handled exclusively by the DM, and they’re handed out at their discretion. The DM can decide if the players find an item as loot after a fight, if an item is given to them as a quest reward, or if it’s available for purchase in a shop. The DM decides when, where, and what items
Sure that’s one way of doing it, you could also just have the big bad study the players weaknesses and present more of a problem that way
I mean like, instead of a specific uncommon item, could I pick any uncommon item from other sourcebooks too
Not necessarily a new comer to DnD , been playing for a good bit by now, but does anyone (who uses procreate for map making) know any good free (or paid, but preferably free) brush packs for making DnD maps
More particularly because this will be my first time dming (doing a one shot)
Yeah of course you can
Who would stop you?
Are you the DM in this context, or a player?
I would presume DM right? If they’re reading the sourcebooks
DM
Since I assume that sourcebooks hand out specific magical items for a reason, so I was wondering if replacements would be detrimental to the game flow
Depends on the adventure. Sometimes specific magic items are important to the plot, so you probably don’t want to change those. But if it’s just a reward that the players can do whatever they want with, then sure, you can change it. You just have to keep an eye on the game balance, but it shouldn’t affect much
Bet, ty ty
Question
What species is more flexible for any camping dnd game
Besides human’s 😂
The classics (elves, dwarves, halflings) are probably safe bets in most fantasy settings.
Im new to d&d although i understand the basics and rp. how should i get into my first campaign?
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 read this, or check local places like libraries or game shops
Its easier to name ones that aren't, just pick whoever you want
Go Tiefling or something
I see
The ones I could think of are Drow and Duergar
Which you shouldn't pick into environments where there's a lot of sunlight
I have a bit of an odd question,
we started my campaign as an online dnd campaign with some in person sessions here and there, now, we don’t do either, but we all want to keep the campaign going. The dm doesn’t like online that much but is not opposed to it, but it’s like the only way we can actually make progress sometimes. We haven’t had a session in months
How should a player bring up to the dm that if we wanna keep playing, online sessions might be the best option until our schedules actually line up for in person?
Scheduling issues, including a lack of sessions should be communicated to the DM and table.
It’s worth it to bring the lack of sessions up to see what changes can or will be made. Worst case you just find a new group
Hello i have a question or ask for any thoughts on the D&D starter set (Heroes of Borderlands) is it a good starter set?
I haven’t run it myself but I’ve heard it’s a good adventure to run for newbie groups
thanks, planning to buy and and try to get my other friend groups to play D&D i want them to experience on how fun it is hahahah
Question is all campaign is in a server?
This server doesn’t host games itself. We do have an lfg function however. The instructions can be found in #find-a-game !
We’re level 6 rn. We started campaign almost two years ago. I guess I don’t understand the “issue” with online sessions?
Umm 🤔 where the server link? It just puts me in a endless loop of thread or I just don’t know how to Navigate
When I brought up the scheduling issues last time, the dm said something along the lines of wanting to wait a bit longer to have a place to host consistently and wanting to start the campaign up smoothly again. But tbh, it feels like the longer we wait to start the campaign, the less likely we are to play😂😂
It can be in person
I’m to shy and not used to that plus I’ll start laughing 😂
Hi never played dnd and thinking of joining a game but are there some maybe rules to read so I can prep my self
Not sure what you mean. #find-a-game contains the instructions on how to use this server to find a group, including how to reply and make posts in the lfg-channels
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Welcome! The free Basic Rules are linked in both this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
Tysm
I recommend making a practice character as you read along. If it feels like a lot feel free to take it at your own pace and ask questions as needed
After that, if you wanna start as a player probably make a practice character and get it reviewed by us.
Darn bet me to it
Don’t worry too much about memorizing everything. It’s better to have familiarity with the ability to look things up when needed. You can also focus what you learn if you’re only interested in a few things to start out with. No need to learn all 20 levels of Wizard if you want to play a Fighter, for example
Character creation is a very fun part of dnd, so have fun
Is a server open for joining dnd rp?
Nothing’s inherently wrong with online sessions, but some people do prefer in-person sessions more. There are other possible considerations such as physical books not transferring content to a VTT or similar tool for online play.
Still, bring these concerns up with your DM. There’s nothing wrong with leaving the group for greener pastures if the game doesn’t look like it’ll be resuming soon
Is there a link so choose?
Wdym? Link for what?
#looking-for-community is where you can find other discord servers that host such things
To join a server to play and roll play
As per #find-a-game , the lfg channels contain postings from other people that you can reply to. The #looking-for-community channel is specifically for advertisements for other D&D servers that may or may not also host D&D games
If you were looking for a game you could also either make a post in #looking-for-dm or reply to game listings in #looking-for-players
This very confusing
Nope
Wait is it to debunk a rumor then
This server does not host d&d games, but you can find other communities that potentially host d&d games or roleplay sessions and similar in #looking-for-community
You said someone told you so and I thought it was your DM who told you about the mixed race being a thing in dnd
Oh my Dm was a friend from long ago when I was in high school then a guy I met in 2010
Again this server has 3 lfg channels:
- #looking-for-community for larger D&D servers that host special types of community games (e.g. Westmarches)
- #looking-for-dm for players looking for DMs to invite them to a campaign
- #looking-for-players for DMs to looking for players to invite to their campaign
All of this is explained in #find-a-game , which also has the instructions for replying to and making posts in those channels
I read it and also I had some help understanding some things but the thread really not making things easier
What specifically is giving you trouble?
Finding a server that making games to join in and finding a dm to help creating a character and if I have questions or he can guide me over in aspect detail or thing and jump in to game when ready
Something like that
You can find other servers that host games or similar activities in #looking-for-community. This server does not host any sort of games, its a hub for people that are interested in d&d.
So you are looking for a game to join where the DM will help you with character creation?
Make sense
there are also other text channels where you can look for DM's that are currently looking for players. Star mentioned them in this post #dnd-newcomers message
feel free to read in those text channels to find what best suits you
what does dnd stand for
Dungeons and Dragons ^^
thabk you
No problem, I don't know much yet, but at least this I could answer 👌
lol
Greetings, I've been playing since 2019 so idk if I'm new, but I want to make some friends so I'm here
Glad to have ya here! I recommend reading the #channel-guide , but otherwise I’d say you’re new to the server but not to dnd. Hope to see you around!
I've been in the server for a while now, just wasn't that active in many channels outside of the LFG and LFDM
Ah I see
Yee
Welp, still glad to make your acquaintance
Same to you
is it even possible to play DND online without a computer? i initially tried playing in-person, but i couldn’t find anybody interested. so instead i want to try playing online, but i’ve heard you generally need a computer for sites like roll20 :(
I imagine it’s still possible, yeah.
People've been playing in the 70s, so yes, verily
Even more so if you play by post, but even then
Oh, you mean online but not on the computer. Yes, two tools I know of can do that: Owlbear Rodeo and the DDB Maps
Those can be handled with a mobile device.
Can someone give me some advice? Im going to be joining my first campaign soon and im really nervous. Ive only briefly talked to the dm and he’s really nice but im concerned that the rest of the party might not like me or might not be very welcoming to me or something like that. So does anyone have any advice?
i’ve only heard of owlbear rodeo very recently, and it seems pretty cool but how often does that get used compared to roll20? i don’t think i’ve seen many games using it
I can't speak out of experience, but from a general point of view my advice is to just communicate openly from the start. Explain, that you are new to this and a bit nervous and that you just want to have fun together with everyone ^^
Alright, i think its mainly because of two things the bigger of the two being i am under 18, the dm said he didn’t mind but im sure the rest of the party will be older people and i feel a little intimidated by that. And i also have social anxiety because im very introverted
You maybe could ask the DM if he could check-in with the others before you start? Make sure that they also fine with having you there^^ I would say that older players might be more chill, but again I have no experience myself, so I can be wrong.
Alright. I really appreciate the help because even though we haven’t set a time for sessions yet i just feel pretty stressed but this definitely helps. Thank you
And maybe you can have a small get-to-know-each-other session before you start the campaign.^^
It's a less involved experience than roll20. There is no inbuilt sheet tracker and people just use it as a battle map in tandem with DDBeyond as far as I've seen.
It does have a dice roller available and even has stuff like walls
So it's easier to use, but has overall less features. Which might be an up or downside depending on what you need.
fairly new player, i wanna get into dming but im not entirely sure where to start. and do you have to play off the books or could i jump straight into making my own campaigns (i know you can, but i meant if im new can i make my own pretty easily)
I recommend starting with something prewritten first, so you can get used to the rhythm of play. DDB has some free adventures you could look at:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
im overwelmed dont know where to start what do i di?
Assuming you're a player, what class do you wanna play
honestly i am i stared with dnd beyond but im lost and confused
a sorrcer they look cool
Next, what kinda race do you want
hmm maybe an elf or a type i loved eragon as a kid dude
Goodnight
For fighters weapon masteries 2024 does it work with grabs?
As in if I have a warhammer equipped and grab with a loxodons trunk could I transition into the warhammers mastery push after a grapple attempt or does weapon mastery only proc if you're actively attacking with the weapon
Dragonborn as race maybe?^^
a grapple rolls as an unarmed attack if im not mistaken, in that case i don't think it works.
You can search for Dragonborn in the DnD Beyond (App or website)^^
i am in there right now looking
Unarmed strike can be used to Damage, Grapple or Shove any creature withing 5 feet of you.
Ah thanks for the clarification so this would be more the way it would work than
Level 1 grab with trunk, wait till next turn, attack with the two handed weapon, weapon mastery push to prone them?
As for the question, You mean proficiency with said warhammer?
Essentially fighter 2024 lets you get weapon mastery level 1.
Warhammers unique mastery is push it lets you push a creature up to 10 feet.
So generally curious if this would be the correct interaction.
Grab with a loxodons trunk as a action then on your next turn attack with the warhammer which would activate weapon mastery, allowing you to push to shove them to the ground since there grappled and force them into a proned status. Was curious if that was how that would work 🤔
This is a really technical question, i'm thinking hard on this one
the weapon mastery does not equal the shove action, in that case i do not think it would make them prone, only push them 10ft away, but in doing so also not making them grappled
Is this warhammer 2 handed weapon?
With a grapple, one hand must be free for a grapple to work or another body part that can grab such as a hand.
i think so, but loxodon trunks allows them to grapple, so i assume they can still use both hands
Ya its two handed. Honestly tbh Imma just assume this is going to be entirely up to the dm. I'm trying to look for the description of shove to compare it to push.
Heres the description of pushing with a weapon using mastery
If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can push the creature up to 10 feet straight away from yourself if it is Large or smaller.
Shoving a Creature
Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.
The target must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Instead of making an attack roll, you make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). If you win the contest, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.
shove explicitly says to knock them prone
where as the push mastery only says that they get pushed 10ft.
I would however as a dm probably give some sort of bonus if u were to slam someone into a wall or terrain with the push
Gentle reminder that this channel is specifically for helping new to D&D folks get started with learning the core rules and mechanics. The current discussion may fit better in #character-discussion if you're looking for feedback on a character build idea.
Then yeah, let's nudge the weapon masteries discussion to there - thanks!
Sounds good tbh thought mechanics were apart of newcomers I'll head there appericate it!
Can anyone call and teach me how to make a character?
I can’t call, but I can give you a guide
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Ok
hellow
Wolleh
I don't know how to respond to that, my social skill doesn't exceed after hello.
hallo, so I'm new to d&d and my only experience is watching people play it, is it easy to get into it/find people to play with?
Welcome!
It’s not the hardest, but it’s not the easiest either. It’ll take some time and a tiny bit of luck.
A lot of that is cut down if you’re the DM.
I am new too....
Hello new too…
I’m Nugget!
it's quite intimidating to dm isn't it? i mean you have to create scenarios and stuff, I'd like to play even if solo because i feel like i need to get a hang of it first before trying to find a campaign to join
basic dad joke,, 😭 🥀
Nugget being nugget
Solo dnd play isn’t recommended tbh, but doing one shots might be good! They’re one session campaigns that don’t have as much commitment, are less serious and allow you to experiment with different playstyles.
Whos new too... I only know new too....
It can be a bit frontloaded if you're just starting out, especially if you start by reading the Basic Rules. On the other hand, once that hurdle is over it's way easier to get into a group.
On the other other hand the most difficult part of D&D is finding a group. Not because they're rare but that spots tend to fill up fast
Ah, but the last . was a full stop.
Not to say it's impossible, but you won't likely join one same day
Imagine using proper punctuation
on that note i have a question in regards to characters, if they die on a campain can you re-use them on a different one
You can, but I usually recommend making a designated character for each campaign
When reusing a character, you'll often just recycle the concept or "restart" them from the beginning of their journey
thanks for all the insight, it's quite difficult to keep up specially with all the terminology and numbers
Carrying over level-ups, items, etc between campaigns isn't standard unless it's specifically a sequel campaign or the DM approves beforehand
And even then, making a character that fits in the world of the setting is my recommendation
that's so cool, it's quite intimidating to start playing, so i appreciate all the advice, i tried making a character sheet with dnd beyond, and it's straightforward for the most part except the distribution of numbers
Stats are a common place people get stuck on when they’re starting out
Yeah, generally you want to make your backstory as general as possible before you join a campaign, then tailor the specifics once you join one
where can i get guidance whether my character is too powerful as a level 1
#character-discussion possibly
thank youu
If you've made the sheet and want it reviewed you can post it here or in #character-discussion
Sure, that works
because i got one printed out now xd
Link, since the server doesn't allow uploaded files
As was said by NuggetN, oneshots are amazing to learn how to DM. However from personal experience and my personal playgroup, people are just happy that they get ot play dnd, even if it is a bit scuffed. Ofc there are a lot of resources and little tips and tricks to help with the creation of encounters, maps and worldbuilding.
hi
Welcome!
thanks
Greetings
As a new player what would i have to buy to get into playing dnd, do i just need dice or paper or should i look into getting any manuals

Review the free Basic Rules (see above), then decide if you'd like to invest further. You'll need dice if you want to play IRL. For manuals, start with the Player's Handbook (PHB).
okay thanks i’ll look into getting the players handbook
I'm new to dnd and looking to get some ppl into the game, I have the starters set lost mine of phandelver, was wondering if I should start with that or find other campaigns to play, only because I've heard mixed reviews about the lost mines of phandelver
Lost Mine is a rock-solid adventure, but it doesn't do a great job of helping new players/DMs understand how to play. The newer starter sets like Dragons of Stormwreck Isle and Heroes of the Borderlands are better at that.
That said, you don't need to buy anything to learn DMing.
Yeah, so I should look into the other two you'd say instead?
Because I'm probably going to be playing with people who don't really know much abt dnd as a whole
Up to you, honestly. It's either buy a new set or spend some additional time learning the ropes of DMing (and onboarding new players).
That depends on whether you prefer the game ease you into it and walk you through things, or if you prefer to jump in head first so that you can adventure and be creative right off the bat.
Ok yeah cool thx so much
The first campaign I played in is Curse of Strahd. Anything is possible with enough effort.
Would you recommend trying to push myself to be more creative?
I have not played any of the starter adventures listed here, so I don't want to make any specific recommendations, but creativity is the heart of this game. I think you'll always have more fun if you make things personal and invest yourself into it
Personally, I would have loved more hand-holding compared with what LMoP provided, but the adventure itself is well-crafted (despite some weaknesses, which will probably be true of any published adventure you grab).
And when I say that creativity is the heart of this game, I don't mean to push you one way or the other by saying that. There are plenty of opportunities to be creative with any adventure
Yeah right
So I'm definitely gonna be the dm bcuz the ppl I'll play with hardly even know what dnd is so would you recommend then going with the other starters that teach you a bit more?
Sorry I hope I'm not asking a question that's already been answered 😭
I think Colossus said it well earlier: it depends if you wanna learn to swim by just jumping in or if you and your table would rather ease into it. If you want to jump in, stick with LMoP. If you want to make the transition easier, grab Heroes of the Borderlands or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle.
One thing you can do to keep things going is have smaller sessions with the DM online. Side quests or run through downtime activities between sessions. These smaller sessions one on one or with maybe one other player are more doable online and keeps you engaged in the game.
Have you had a session zero? This is a good time to discuss this. I have played with players of all types and ages and as a DM I work with my players to make sure they are having fun regardless of their style of play. Role playing is tough sometimes even for the pros! Remember this is not a game that you "win" but one where you have fun. Not every group works out so don't stress over that. Keeping a DnD group together can be as challenging as keeping a band together. As others have noted work with the DM on expectations, rules, concerns etc.
One of the biggest cautions I have seen for new DMs is trying to homebrew everything from the start. It is a lot of work. For starting out most would recommend you start with a simple low level (level 1) module to get the experience. Maybe start with a familiar established setting such as Forgotten Realms where you do not have to invent everything. There is PLENTY of space and room to homebrew locations, NPCs and adventures in that setting. One thing I do with my kids group is piece together one-shots into a cohesive connected story attached to the place they are in with homebrew and a "sand-box" style in between.
Hello
Welcome to the server!
Your grapple is your action. Unless you have another action your action for that turn is done. You would have to wait until your next turn to release your grapple and attack with the warhammer. Useful though if you are preventing their escape. But yes mastery is attached to the use of a weapon.
You mean you run games for your kids? If so that's so cool
Or am i getting this totally wrong
This is 2014 mechanic. 2024 is a bit nerfed and is a DC 8 + proficiency plus STR modifier. Work with the DM on which one applies at the table.
Yeah it is a teens group at a local library where they can learn how to play.
Can I send you a DM about this? I have some questions that would not fit the channel!
The starter sets are tailor made for this. In particular Stormwreck Isle. Pre-made chracter sheets that are simplified versions of a fuller sheet (easier for new players) and a good story. It is a perfect way to learn the game. Then you can jump off from there and go anywhere you want or start with a fresh campaign from scratch.
hello im pretty much new here. any pointers on how i should start

Hey guys so i thought the artificer class was part of dnd beyond available classes but i can't find it anywhere to do my character sheet
The artificer is not one of the core classes available with the free rules. You'd need access to the books with the class.
The most recent version of it is in “Forge of the Artificer”
Ohhhhh
Hey, I'm starting out as a DM for my friends, all first time players like me, and we decided to get started with the dragons of stormwreck isle starter set. I'm currently reading through it and watched 2 videos about it, so I know there are premade characters in there that loosely link to the story. BUT... one of my players was really excited about the idea of playing a rouge troll that is 2 meters tall and 2 meters wide, but thinks he is small and petite. Can I allow that, or should i tell them to hold onto that thought for a later campain?
It is more work but you can just a take a blank PDF character sheet and fill it in using free online sources for the class. Check your library for the books. Mine had Tashas Cauldron of Everything which has the class details. Here is some info: https://rpgbot.net/2024-dnd/classes/artificer/
Thanks but the campaign im about to join uses only beyond for the character sheets 💔
I could do the pdfs later tho
That’s not really how the game works- you’d have to either pick one of the player races or homebrew something (not recommended). Maybe ask them if they want to play a goliath instead
I would ask why they want to play such a character. If their motive makes sense to you and doesn't feel like it'd be disruptive while still following the rules/mechanics, I would say it's allowable. But ultimately it's your call.
I will search the player races for something similar then
I would recommend a goliath for that
Thanks, I will think about it more, but I do think it would be funny for both me and the players, so I will search for a way to implement it
hey all, im just getting into dnd for the first time in about 10 years, should i just look at tutorials online? or would i learn faster from playing barebones campaigns with other new players?
I guess it depends if you're trying to join games with strangers or with people you know!
right now i have no one to play with, some of my friends were interested but no one wants to DM
You should try to learn most of the basic rules (free on D&D beyond) before joining a game
E.g, knowing what to do on your turn and where to reference other rules
It sounds like you all need to learn the rules as it's not super common for DMs to take on a group of strangers AND to teach them the whole game. So read and look up tutorials. Maybe check out the learn-to-play sessions offered during the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab).
hey guys "new" guy here, whats this virtual dnd weekend event
Here's the description of what a virtual weekend entails: https://www.baldmangames.com/virtual-dd-weekends/
Thx 😄

Hi folks! Im new and looking for a very newbie friendly discord RP group! Im not sure I'm in the right place so if this isn't the place please let me know!
hey ive just wanted to try to get into dnd, i got like no money so i cant play irl. are there like digital groups? im also lookin for a party to join if thats possible
This isn't an RP server, but you might be able to find RP groups following the instructions in #find-a-game
Same as any other group
ill look there too, tysm
Playing D&D online is very common, and it is possible to do so without purchasing anything. The free Basic Rules are available online, and they contain the bare minimum you'll need to play the game. If you don't purchase any sourcebooks, the main thing you'll be missing out on is character customization options. The basic rules contain 12 of the 13 classes, and only 1 subclass for each.
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

You can find a link to the basic rules in the bot post above
how hard is it to find a party? im pretty young so finding groups is pretty hard
im lookin for more long term ppl to play with and stuff
Finding a group can be difficult, but it becomes easier the winder a net you use. This server has some "looking for group" channels that you can browse through, but you can also check other discord servers, and other websites. You really get out what you put in with this, so the more effort you spend looking for a group, the more likely you will be to find one
alright thats helpful, thanks a lot
I’d recommend reaching out to your school, library, and gameshops for Youth D&D programs.
How do I play dnd me and my friends have been wanting to play but never knew where to start
My school is boring we got nothin, as of gameshops mine are full of weirdo 30 yr olds
i dont really have the funds to play irl, id prefer to js play onlin
weirdo 30 yr olds 😂
ey i aint tryna play with ppl twice my age
especially irl
I remember playing magic the gathering in game stores when I was like 12 with people who were like 30+ it can be fun and not fun at the same time
You could play amongst yourselves if there’s enough of you, or check out a local games store or library, or play online (info in #find-a-game )
my parents also would say no to irl, they wouldnt see it as worth the money
Thank you very much
are there any youth programs online like u said
You don’t have to spend a cent
elaborate
dont u gotta buy the minis and stuff
You can spend as little or as much as you wish
Nope! I’ve been playing for two years and haven’t bought a single mini.
Anyone want to do a campaign
markers, candy and whatever toy or objects you have work just fine
its way more than just that
I’ve only bought a single pack (around 4 sets) of dice on sale
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227 check here to learn how to look for stuff
It was like 15 bucks (AUD)
Is that in the server
yep
i would be able to do that, just ion know if i can do irl.
Yelo
id much rather play online, just all the groups im seeing are 18+
sadly same, when i last checked, its hard have you checked libraries or school?
Not all groups are, but many groups prefer to be 18+ yeah
my school only cares about sports stuff and the nearest library is too far to be convincable
Do you have enough friends interested in the game to band together and start a campaign of your own?
theyd be "interested", realize that it isnt a highly saturated roblox game, and then quit
Then yeah I think online is your best bet
Just keep looking online
You’ll find something eventually
are yall lookin for any players? im available pretty much every weekend unless i got plans, but i can inform in advance
Unfortunately not, I’ve got 3 campaigns and all are filled
ah damn
You could also try #looking-for-community and maybe look for an under 18 server?
ive went through what i saw, either didnt catch my interest or turned me away. maybe i can put somethin together during school lunch time
most likely impossible itll work at school tho
i only know 1 friend thatll be up to it but thats about it
Imma be honest, when I first started I did it during breaks too and I don’t recommend
There’s just not enough time
guess im out of options
Razorwing has a guide that may help you https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rjwuod1lNBM5n4X_TH2ZoqTULv53jWaVMXtrzKVboms/edit?usp=sharing
ill look here, tysm. hope ill find a party
just a question, we have like 45 mins during lunch, 5 days a week. would it work with just coming back every day to continue or would that mess it up?
If you can get a game going in those times you could do a scene a day, five scenes a week, that'll do you a one-shot adventure. Then someone else can run the next one.
It could, but those are extremely short games
It might take 2 days or so to finish a combat like that
Maybe more
Low level one-shots, it's totally possible. The Thursdays and Fridays are the two-parter episodes at the end of each arc.
ill see who i can get together, how many ppl are reccomended for something short?
im assuming 3-4 right?
Sounds good. Check out the Five Room Dungeon method.
ill look into that, thanks
thats the beauty of the game, you get to learn about people as you adventure together!
ohh so like one per day?
Yeah. The method doesn't have to be a literal dungeon with five chambers, rather it's a way to organise a set of scenes into an adventure that presents a selection of challenges.
also if you got an online party and a space ever opens up, lemme know id be down to join
@wild onyx @honest mountain @hearty blaze do you guys know any short rulebooks that i can print like 25 pages at most
The free basic rules are the shortest of official D&D rules that I'm aware of
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
As a player you only really need to cover the first two chapters and then whatever class you're playing.
is there like a pdf version of this thats printable
oh im planning on being the dm
I…don’t know sorry
The SRD (System Reference Document) is the free materials available for third-party folks to reference when making D&D 5e compatible material: https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd
But that's not quite as user friendly as the free basic rules
(oh and now the SRD has localized versions!)
Yeah i'd just recommend using the basic rules on dnd beyond
But they wanna print it
the thing is i wanna do this at school, and they banned phones and stuff lik that so i cant even refer to that
ctrl+p and print to PDF and then combine all the pages together I guess
Won't be an awesome reading experience but that's one way to get a PDF version (for your own use - do not distribute)
its one paged is it enough to refer to quickly
That would be for the 2014 rules so not the latets but mechanically it's not that different. 2024 updates streamline and clarify things a bit more.
That’s good for combat
1, i dont even have that many papers, 2, i need to refer to this quickly
i mean were planning on playing for fun nothing like super serious / official
Hey everyone! I've never played DND before and I know very little about it but want to learn and play one day. Im kind of overwhelmed and nervous on where to start. Anyone have some advice?
Again the first 2 chapters of the free rules will be most of what the players need.
DM will need to reference a little bit more but it's almost easier to use the DnDBeyond mobile app and reference the free rules there.
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And of course, if you have any specific questions, please ask away!
Ask about anything your wondering about in #dnd-newcomers as well
sadly cant use a phone, banned those at school
Please don't solicit/organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels - it's off topic outside of them
Its going to be really hard to try and get all of the basic rules down to ~25 pages
Okay so no phones
Laptop/macbook? , load the page beforehand to get past *every effing thing being blocked). Or screenshots. Or copy and paste into a document.
Can you play after school? Is there like a board game club you guys can chill with?
^this or just meeting at a friend’s house is my recommendation
i cant use a personal one there, and to get one of their computers set up would already waste some time. were already on a time crunch
my school needs a teacher running the club for it to be allowed, and itd have to be public. i prefer just a small friend group, and @hearty blaze theyre all busy after school and weekends are really iffy for them, cant be consistent
Trying to play D&D during school time doesn't look like it's going to fly if you're that locked down. Barring buying a physical copy of the Players Handbook.
Probably easiest way to get the rules on hand is to get a physical copy of the Player's Handbook
well my sister used to play, she said she'll give me her minis and old stuff so i can get started
Well that’s sweet
she might have the handbook, she dm'ed before
Oh noice
you can use the 2014 rules easily if she can lend you the handbook
if she has it, ive only ever seen her minis, nothing much else
i painted a few actually when i was younger
yeah, otherwise maybe try to get one for yourself. If you have a board game store somewhere near you they often will hold copies of d&d books for purchase
how much would a handbook cost?
uhh 60 dollars is way over my budget
ordering one online is $50
but maybe you can look around any local stores to see if they have better prices
yeah ill see
or try to find a used copy of the 2014 players handbook
if not ill just print a bunch of stuff from online and make a makeshift reference guide
HOWEVER
chanukahs coming up and i might be able to ask for some dnd stuff as a gift
plus new years is also soon
alright theres a chance
I read somewhere online that familiars conjoured with find familiar can use the help action, is this true? I can't find anything about it in the PHB
yo do anyone know how i can make a character
using the book or using DnDBeyond?
I don't know if all of them can use the help action. also, my brain is getting mixed up between 2014, 2024, and tales of the valiant lately as far as familiars go.
Would it be in the stat block or is there a section in the PHB about familiars/companions that I'm missing
i think directly with the spell
find familiar 2024 doesn't say anything about it that I can see
Help is just a normal action any creature can take
So Find Familiar would have to say they can't, like with making attacks
Though do note that depending on what exactly they're trying to help with, there might be more requirements
in combat, i do believe the help action is also an action
So like a hawk can help me make a perception check but not an arcana check?
The specifics will depend on your DM, but yes, like that
ok odd question, does a stickfigure count as a "Species"?
Like, a living stick figure? Or one you draw?
a living stick figure
I just found the list of standard actions in the phb. I'm guessing for things like help, study, search etc the creature can only do it on things they have the skills for specified in the stat block? Like owl says it has +3 perception and +3 stealth but no other skills, so it can just do those?
Possibly, but it’s not in the official books for sure
That is not an official species option, no. It would be homebrew
DAMN IT
I don't remember the exact rules off the top of my head, but pretty much
Soooo, can i say Sorcerer, cuz he DOES have supernatural powers
Ask your DM if you can do it. 99% sure they’ll say no though
Sorcerer is a class, not a species
oh
the specified skill bonuses are for when the creatures ability to use said skill is not reflected in their stats
It's more the idea that you can't help with a skill unless you're proficient at it, which I think was at least in the 2014 rules
Can't remember if it's 2024 right now
what about a Luminari, A species born from raw light energy, because that illustrates what i have rn
Also not an official species. Have you read the basic rules?
welp i did try, it was custom but i did try
Though it's possible you could flavor another species to look more like that
If it was custom how was it official
idfk, im trying here
Holy shit i js struck gold
Look over the official species and choose from that
Noice
OK, Dragonborn final answer, my OC does have fire manipulation
Nice choice
I found a set of dices, and magic item cards + creature & npc cards
i dont think you'll be able to post pics in here
I can dm
You're able to send merch pics in #merch-and-dice
there ya go
Might eat em during a campaign
Cronchy
i sent you a message with a link to the essentials kit rulebook pdf that's hosted on Wizards of the Coast's media server. while 2014 rules, it's something that you could potentially reference offline.
Thank you so much youre a saint
Hello, new to this server but not D&D. So how does LFG work? Do you just DM the DMs there or what is the correct process?
You can either reply to DMs' posts in #looking-for-players and/or make your own post in #looking-for-dm
Either way the instructions to do so are in #find-a-game
Thank you Good Star!
Okay, kinda of an idiot. So how do you post to #looking-for-dm?
I don't understand this: To submit a post of your own, click #looking-for-players then send the message by itself. You’ll be given a private form to provide the details of your post.
Send what message by itself where? Do I send it to monodrone? And what does "by itself" mean?
Sorry, been a long time since I used discord.
In #looking-for-players you just need to click on any posting you see that you are potentially interested in. That'll open up the thread where you can shoot a message to the DM stating your interest, ask any questions, etc along with anyone else that has replied in the thread.
You actually want to look through #looking-for-players as that's DMs who need players
Oops didn't realize my typo
If you want to make a post in #looking-for-dm then you just need to run the bot command in any channel on this server that you can type in, including this one (found in #find-a-game but the shortcut is just "/looking-for dm").
I haven't used the function myself but I believe the Monodrone bot should pull up a form for you to fill out once you enter the command.
In terms of what Standard Array is, its basically a set of numbers that you distribute into your stats
15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
Uh I got a character. I’m working on. It’s a changeling cleric. It’s my first character it uses dual sickles. Its domain is trickery i need help on stats and all of that stuff. (I don’t like numbers haha) could I get some help on what else I need for the characters it’s deceiving and manipulation I think would be good words to use, this character likes to gamble snd use slight of hand.
I’m not sure if the rest was needed but yeah
Have you thought about the characters backstory a bit, who they were before they started their adventure?
And why they want to adventure?
Each character gets a Background, which is essentially who your character was before they started adventuring
Its gives you skill proficiencies, stats bonuses, and items which is useful to do character creation
uh. I bit of a backstory but it was trained by 3 people, a healer, an assassin, and a torturer so it can learn anatomy on ways to do harm but also use pain in ways to learn things from people. it’s kinda hard to explain.
Sure thats fine. We're these people that trained you shady criminals? Did you character do some criminal stuff or scam people out of their money or something?
I guess you could say it was taken in at a young age after my character was hunted for stealing from a priest, left for dead these people found him snd took him under them as their apprentice
Do I need to do a background on them too?
Were they also followers of the god your character is a cleric of?
Not if you don't want to no
Im asking these just to have some idea of possible Backgrounds to point you in the direction of
My character is ig a chaotic neutral? Kinda like an antihero who defies the government to help people in need
My character loves money aswell so he keeps some of what he takes
So just from that, there are a couple of backgrounds that can fit, there is the Charlatan, the Criminal, and potentially the Acolyte which seem to fit
What dos that mean?
Im trying to find a good link to give you a reference
Charlatan, Criminal, and Acolyte are all Backgrounds:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins
Though if you're limited to the Basic Rules of the 3 suggested ones, Acolyte and Criminal are free. Charlatan is part of the 2024 PHB
My character likes to uncover the bad secrets of governments, hierarchy’s , royalty etc. and is willing to do anything to uncover the secrets to show the public how dark they are kind of like to start rebellion
Criminal and acolyte both fit very well
Yep Charlatan isnt in the free rules, but the other two are an option. Essentially you can read about what they give you and which one you'd be most interested in
I’m not sure ;-; the both seem rlly well together
The site that link brings you to also includes all of the character creation rules as well so you can reference it for anything else you are confused about
But essentially, you decide how to distribute the standard array to your stats, then you choose a background and apply whatever it gives you to your character
alright. I’m not sure what to choose since both fit very well. is there anyway to do both or no-
After that you've already chosen your characters specie to be a changeling, (which isnt in the base 2024 rules I don't think, but you can try to adapt the 2014 changeling to it), and you've chosen your class to be a cleric
yeah I rlly like changelings I think it’s a sick race
Each character only gets one background. You could get more origin feats later if you want, but that isnt something you have to worry about for a lvl 1 character
alright.
You cannot have 2 backgrounds no. Keep in mind that backgrounds are primarily mechanical, not narrative. It's there to summarize the most relevant skillset you might have from your backstory
If you want to be a criminal acolyte narratively, nothing's stopping you
Yeah, its basically just abstracting your characters story to mechanical benefits
Those are basically the 4 things you need
Alright. For my brains sake can you make a small list that I need to do? I rlly didn’t think background were so important
The cleric stuff can be found in the link that was sent before as well, when you navigate to cleric it'll show you what a cleric gets at each level from 1-20
Stats
Species
Class
Background
Alright!
Basically yeah
I’m not rlly looking for life domain, as I said like the trickery domain is there somewhere I can read into that?
For simplicity, choose your stats from Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8)
Right, the trickery subclass isnt in the basic rules, your best bet is to either get the PHB for yourself or look around on Google to see if you can find any info on the specifics of 2024 trickery cleric
Oki doki! I want stuff like command which I think is rlly cool aswell as another about smth with telling the truth
A lvl 1 cleric doesn't have to worry about the domain yet though, primarily because clerics get their subclass at lvl 3 if I'm not mistaken
If you don't own the Trickery domain already for D&DBeyond you can:
- See if your (eventual) DM and/or someone at your (eventual) table has the 2024 PHB on DDB and a Master Tier subscription for content shring
- If you have outside legal access (e.g. physical copy, library) you can copy the subclass into DDB's homebrew creator
so much info. I think I made my character so crazy.. I’m so confused and I don’t got the money to buy anything
Both of the methods I listed are ways to access Trickery domain legally for free
take it nice and slow and experiment with the free options you have. try building a few characters just to see what they can do and where numbers go.
It do be like that. If you can find a dm that has access to certain books or resources they can help you out there
In any case you won't have to worry about it until you get an actual campaign going and level up
Dang auto correct
Alright 😭
this is all overwhelming.. I might js have a friend set stuff up for me. but I’ll try to see what I can do thank ya for the help :>
Hello... I've been reading the "learn to play" thread and notice that everything is linked to D&D Beyond. The group I'm with plays on Roll20. Are there any differences I should know about?
roll20 is just a Virtual Tabletop (VTT)
There shouldn't be any differences between what DDB says and roll20 says in terms of 5e rules
What may differ is owned content since roll20 is an independent legal vendor of 5e content. So if you bought a book on roll20 you wouldn't own it on DDB
I haven't bought anything. I just wasn't sure if character building was different or something.
Just the format/UI of the character creator should change, but it's the same system underneath
hello
Thanks!
Hello… I’m merely just starting off at D&D having spectated a group that takes place at a library had intrigued me into possibly trying it out myself yet having issues trying to figure out where to begin in all this. Had a few ideas mentioned by the DM of the current campaign I’ve been observing about a possible Dragonborn sorcerer or monk with the draconic ancestry subclass but having looked a bit deeper, also found half dragons as an interesting concept as well. What are your thoughts?
Should be the same though I found roll20 frustrating and not intuitive compared to DDB.
A dragonborn sorceror is great and i have a friend that plays a dragonborn monk in a current campaign i play in, he has a lot of fun with it. Since you have a DM, asking them to help you make a character will probably be the easiest way to start
Anything specific your interested about?
Other than the few things I did from the learn to play thread, I've never interacted with DDB. I'm only part of one dnd party and they use roll20. The charactermancer sheet has always been a pain. My DM has had to recreate it 3 times because it keeps breaking or I lose access to it.
At the moment, it’s mainly trying to figure out the approach to take with the character and what would work well pertaining to the Dragonborn’s initial bloodline (color relating to the dragon they were likely born from alongside the ancestry and how that may coincide with its playstyle)
I would assume that would offer resistance to both types but how would that work in concept?
That was my experience as well but have heard others that like so it depends on the individual I guess. Have never had an issue with DDB other than they took away the ability to add individual features without buying whole books. They had an a-la-carte option a few years ago.
By RAW (rules as written) nothing like that exists, but if your dm allows it it would probably be best to ask them
Generally speaking, your specie will at most give you resistance to a damage type, not full immunity, if I'm not misunderstanding you
Honestly, your words sound about right. Probably a means of balancing things out looking back I meant to say resistance. Immunity genuinely seems like an overreach that would probably just hinder the experience long term. Felt I should have clarified that a bit further.
Being immune to two damage types at low levels would be pretty OP. I personally would have an issue but your DM might ok it.
The main thing I was wondering was if having a different elemental dragon ancestry would have any impact within how the character themselves would play.
Completely up to you
Classically in dnd, chromatic and metallic dragons are on the opposite ends of the moral spectrum, evil and good respectively, but dragonborns usually don't have to stick with such a limitation unless your DM is strict about it
gem dragons are GOAT
Kek true
From what I’ve seen our DM is actually really chill so I don’t see any issues with it. Just for that comment earlier, I may have to research gem dragons now since they seem like a rarer option I haven’t heard many speak about.
You could make a red dragonborn Lawful good paladin that worships the god of law for instance, there is no such thing as an alignment requirement for specie/race its all about what character concept you like
For a while I thought about it in the expectation of making it as dragonlike as possible before realizing I was probably setting the expectations too far. In the end, I heard from one of the players at our table a couple sessions ago to just create a character that represents yourself which stuck to me quite well from that point.
In the end, I guess we’re all just putting a bit of ourselves into our characters which just makes the experience even better with a proper group. I’ve always thought the idea of having the players having as much of a part as the DM was a neat idea and honestly just trying to find my own ground as a newcomer into all this.
Smallish tidbit, Dragonborn aren't confirmed to be descended from Dragons. They're mostly just the same in appearance.
Harkoning back to their original lore, their origin isn't clear and multiple in-world theories exist (for the Forgotten Realms setting), of which draconic ancestry is only 1 of 3 theories
Heard from one source that I guess Dragonborn hate dragons because of some kind of slavery ordeal? If so than what are the other 2 if I may ask?
Also thought the idea of a half dragon sounded interesting but pretty sure it’s only possible through some ritual pertaining to a dragon’s blood/spell (feel free to address it if I’m mistaken)
Sorry there's actually technically 6:
- They were created from dragon eggs modified by either dragon gods or powerful mortal dragons
2a) They were creations of Io, the great dragon god, made to serve the first dragons
2b) Io actually made them before dragons to be his companions
2c) They were made from Io's blood when he died in the Dawn War - They were made with selective breeding to be slaves for the dragon lords of Abeir
- They were the creations of either Bahamut, Tiamat, Sardior, or some mix of those 3 dragon gods
Delving further into Dragonborn lore would be the purview of #dnd-lore so I'll just leave you with this if you want further reading:

Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
I’d have a look at #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins, both of which have a bunch of useful newbie links including to the free Basic Rules. I suggest making a practice character as you flip through, since it often aids the learning process. The more you learn the easier it is to get into a table as well!
Don't feel pressured to memorize everything, take it at your own pace and focus on what you want to do (e.g. no need to read every spell description, or every classes' mechanics if you don't plan on playing one)
Also feel free to ask any specific questions you have here, we’re always happy to help! :)
If you're familiar with the rules already and/or just want to jump straight into group finding check out #find-a-game to learn how to use this server to find a group
It says to find a D&D group online😂…that’s why I’m here
Sick
As in my message above, this server has a groupfinder in the lfg channels. The instructions on how to use them are in #find-a-game
Sorry, I meant elemental resistance prior, didn’t actually entail immunity as that felt like it wouldn’t work too well without hindering balance too much. Thanks for catching that.
Hi guys
Hi
I know D&D better than I know Discord
Nice
I wonder, would it be funny to create a mock mary sue and act like a fake MC
absolutely not
So no satirical PC?
No mary sue's, even if its satirical
So I can't mock the stereotype?
awe man
its not a good idea for keeping your friends
If a character's whole gimmick is just one joke, it's probably not gonna be very funny, and is gonna get old or annoying quickly
with a mary sue specifically, its also gonna hurt the group
That makes sense I've been watching a ton of critcrab so the jokes make me laugh
If you've been watching critcrab, you know why this isnt a good idea
So no jokes about mocking mary sues in a way that essentially mocks the stereotype but does not delay the game by doing the voice and actually being helpful instead of delaying the game. 😂
doing the voice? there is no voice associated with mary sues
The critcrab voices are too good lmao
It's not so nuch that you couldn't do something like that, but it's gonna be hard to make it work as well as you night think. The original context is a funny video making fun of a person who likely wasn't a great player, from what I know of critcrab's videos. Your character is either not gonna have that context, making them potentially annoying or weird to roleplay with, or you need to explain to other players what you're doing, which while better, can have its own problems. Either way all of that for basically a joke (which is what satire usually is), and if the joke isn't gonna be funny to the others, it's gonna end up just annoying.
So while it CAN work if done right, if it's just a funny thing you saw online and wanted to repeat, it's probably gonna go as well as you're imagining, which is why it's generally a bad idea to make a character whose focus is a silly joke, even of it's funny to you
But I guess this is going beyong newcomer topic, which I just noticed this channel was woops
Understandable
alright my character is a changeling cleric with the trickster domain. He handles dual sickles. My skills are sleight of hand, deception, persuasion, or insight and medicine. with js leather armor I js wanted to see how my stat are, str 15, Dex 12, constitution 14, intelligence 12, wisdom 16, charisma 15. I was wondering if that’s a good stat chart or if there is smth I should change?
How’d you get these stats?
Did you roll for them?
I'd go for 12 str, 15 dex, 15 con, 12 int, 16 wis, 14 cha
I get the appeal for roleplay but dex is still a bit more important overall, and you can trick people just fine with your base kit without needing v high cha
Alternatively, 15 str 14 dex 12 cha instead of 12 str 15 dex 14 cha works too
With that stat spread, you can make a lot of things work. They rolled well
Yup! I sadly don’t have any dice rn but I used a algorithm and that’s what came out
Did your DM oversee the roll?
I don’t have one js yet. this is js an experimental character that I will use but for rn I’m js rolling for what I got rn and see if it’s good or not, but once I get a dm then ima roll again
Ah shame, those are some really good rolls
yeah. Plus since Ik the sickles are primarily str I’m glad it went higher than Dex
And that’s not even with race yet
Best to experiment around with standard array or point buy
Treat high rolls in randomizing during an actual game as a luxury instead of the norm
What’s point buy?
Else its all too easy to be spoiled by high rolls and be at a loss over standard/subpar rolls
You make stats with the following numbers:
15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
Ah mk
Point buy is having 27 points but they can be assigned however you want as long as no one stat exceeds 15
with 27 points what would it be best for my character?
Assuming dexterity Clerics:
The max stat of point buy is 15, not 20
8 str, 14 dex, 15 con, 10 int, 15 wis, 8 cha
Minimum is 8
Ah ok. But with sickles ain’t it str not Dex? that’s what I hear atleast
Yeah hence you go finesse weapons like daggers instead
(In 2014, in 2024 it doesn’t come from your species)
ah ok
A good thing
Before customizable origins Changelings are only good for Paladin, Bard, Sorc and Warlock for the most part
Can I choose any god for my cleric?
typically gods are chosen based on which domain you choose, although as far as i know there is nothing that suggests that this has to be the case. Typically done because of flavour, but can be a fun mixup.
personally i'd choose something somewhat aligned with my domain unless there is backstory implications to make me choose something else.
however it should be noted that it has to fit with the campaign, certain settings do not use or have the same gods and deities and would therefor not be suitable.
@stiff gale i forgot to add the reply to the wall of text
Ah okay that makes sense
I chose a trickster domain :D
Well, what's the difference between a paid game and a free game other than the money?
r
a justification i use for picking a god that is not traditionally aligned with my domain is to have a quest or subplot from my deity to do something that would the domain fits.
a pretty poor explaination due to language barrier, but hopefully you get what im hinting at
I do not think I am winning.
Usually paid games tend to have a higher standard of quality, preptime is usually longer(from my experience) and the story, interactibles and so on are more plentiful and polished
Interactibles?
oh depends on the application used to play dnd, some vtts have interactive maps, items and npcs that can have chat dialogs(i think)
Yes thank you!
Cool, thanks
however there is nothing wrong with free games, i usually prefer them due to them often being a bit more casual, which suits my playstyle.
Any god can fit under any domain so go wild
Though evil gods may sometimes be awkward depending on the campaign which you'd need to reflavor accordingly
A Shar Cleric being in a campaign trying to thwart Shar's plans would be err
another "issue" is something like Lliira, goddess of joy and choosing war domain. Honestly would love to see a backstory reason for this, but yeah
however i think this topic is better suited for #dnd-discussion
Any god can fit under any domain
The goddess of joy would have its own band of War Clerics fighting against people who rob away people's joy for example
In more combative methods than just nicely requesting them to stop
gods do have their default domains so you should check with your DM when you go outside the box there
Question in campaigns is there like a text chat within the DnD app so you talk to people through text?
I just use discord
I’m unsure if there’s something on ddb
Some VTTs do have it, so likely depends. Roll20 and Foundry I know for sure also have a text chat included
Question, for the starters sets, do you have to stick to the with the premade character sheets or can you play it with original characters?
The starter sets are designed around the premades but you can definitely use your own created characters
Or even tweak the scenarios of the starter set to suit your needs
welcome to your first homebrew 😉
The premades are there for people who might not know where to start, (hence why they’re commonly in starter sets,) but there’s nothing that says you can’t make your own character to run around as!
I started with a Dragonborn quite some years ago, and I still have him as my go-to character whenever I join a campaign.
-# He’s even in my profile!
Hello people! I've been looking to find a campaign, where can i do that?
here^^
Thank you
Is there a way to look specifically for PBP campaigns?
Found how to do tha actually
Hi I’m new and looking for a campaign. Any help?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Dang it i'm looking for campaigns but they're all 18+
Which is like. Very fair
But i wanna get in a campaign
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Consider how you can make yourself look like a good candidate. What will you bring to a group? How are you going to be a better choice than the next person wanting to join?
Hello
Probably a good idea yeah
I'm like absolutely a DnD Virgin so what would be a good place to start ? Like a good beginner kit ? Seen a few campagins and honestly gel with the idea . IK I wanna be a Harengon Monk . And faction I basically picked the closest thing to Settei rangers .
The Free Rules are a good starting point. To get haremgon as an option in D&D Beyond you'd need to buy the sourcebook they're in or join a game with content sharing.
Alternatively, you could use a different species and change the description.
alright . I'll check some other options
Sorry I messaged in the wrong forum I’m new idk where to start
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Thanks I’ll have a look
I have made a character and have a character sheet what’s the next best thing for me to do
Yo

How can I start playing guys
See above for the rules. Once you know them at least on a basic level, search for a group by reading through #find-a-game.
You can make any character you want the old fashioned way if it is not on DDB by doing it manually using a PDF blank character sheet. Sometimes it is more important to play the character you envision than be beholden to the limitations of the digital tools. That said you should check with your DM if this is a playable species in your world.
I have read through that but can’t find the right channel
If you're a player, you can post an ad in #looking-for-dm. Otherwise, you can read through the listings in #looking-for-players, #looking-for-community, or #paid-looking-for-game and reply to the ads that interest you.
Make sure you've looked through our available channels in id:browse!
Hey,
Me and my friends are new to dnd and we don't know a lot about it

Thanks, I'll check it out
i haven't checked yet, but is there a printer friendly version of the 2024 basic rules?
Only if you count the SRD.
thought so.
although the SRD is printable. its just a huge number of pages. 2014 had the basic rules v1.0 pdf, though that predates this whole online platform thing.
Yeah. It's a bummer. Probably something to submit to their customer service?
if they havent made one by now for 2024, they likely won't.
Hi
hello
I got a question
go right ahead
Is DnD beyond a good place to make character sheet and play with it
sure. you can make it on DnDBeyond and then export it to a pdf to print.
That is one of the best features on the site for me
but you only get the basic rules unless you buy stuff. so if you already have the books, you are out of luck. you can just erase all the stuff in the pdf for a blank sheet and then print that out to fill by hand
I play online so i got the hand book on dnd beyond and already made my character
then you have a pretty good start.
just try to read stuff in the book, like how combat works and skill checks and spells and whatever
Yeah
I tried to play online the roll 2024 character sheet but it’s so clunky and weird about how many lvl 2 spell I can prepare
And after reading the hand book it gets things so wrong
roll20 and DnDBeyond use the same 2024 rules. so you'd have the same restriction for how many spells you can prepare. different classes get different number of spells
The DnDbeyond is more accurate tho
yes. any updates from Wizards of the Coast would go to DnDBeyond first
noob here
no system is perfect, there's always some kind of bugs and errors with anything. but the developers try really hard.
For some reason I on roll 20 i can prepare only 1 level 2 spell as lvl 3 warlock
how do i pick a race that best works for me
Look over what features they offer and pick based on what strikes you as cool/fun/interesting!
get an idea of how you want your character to do things in the game. what you want them to be good at, and what you want them to be bad at. pick species and class and background and everything based around that.
Idk it’s not the bugs it’s like I’m playing a different game and dnd beyond has been a much smoother experience for me at least
there is a noticeable difference between the 2014 rules and 2024 rules. its possible on roll20 you were using the other rules, which would explain why the book was different.
No I’m pretty sure it was the 2024 character sheet
well, whatever works better for you.
personally, it boils down to the visual aspects for me, but pick whatever you'd like! try 'em out and see what works best for you.
Can I dm?
you may
Yeah
Yo I’m new is there an active campaign I could join
I’d love to what are classes are you looking for
How do I do that
