I don’t think anyone has a question that hasn’t been answered
there is but one i must beg of thee, with the pocket lint and two farthings to bribe you with, now that you mention
I wish I could afford even one book bro 😭
A cool rock will do
damn. thats out of my budget
Tsk. Fine, good mood discount, a cookie
lol
actually i could have pinged you there if that was more to your tastes
deleted the link to a wrong channel
Anyway, what’s the question
Sorry we were not on topic weird person was here that was bugging us
ah, a character concept input is all. i can ping you in #character-discussion . i originally sent a link to the direct message, but deleted as i fear it was out of line
Hello
👋 hallo
So I made a DND character I'm just not sure if it makes sense to actually use in a game 😅
Send it into #character-discussion as a link and they review it
Oh I don't have a character sheet.😅 I just have everything typed out on my phone with what my character is
can u almost be anything when u create characters?
like if im going to create an oc i like to be an Undead druid that summons undead creatures, if they got defeated they explode in worms : p
No characters have defined limits and abilities based on:
- Class
- Species
- Background
- Feats
- Items
For example there is no official species of the undead creature type. The closest is the Reborn lineage. Druids also do not get access to Necromancy spells that raise the dead nor summon undead.
Undead summon spells also do not explode when defeated.
Is a patron for a warlock considered it's sub class?
That's not exactly the same as "Undead"
If an undead druid could work would it's animal form also be undead?
No
what does homebrew mean?
Homebrew is an umbrella term for unofficial content
Ya
That may include but isn't limited to:
- 3rd Party Books
- Playermade content
- DM-dependent rule changes, additions, or removals
I think it could be considered that with necromancy as an umbrella term. With Circle of Spores the default flavor is that your spores are the thing inhabiting a dead body and controlling it rather than the body itself reanimating via magic
How do I get what my HP is?
To follow up on the undead druid idea. As a bridge I encourage to look through the official options and make use of reflavoring; changing the narrative description of a feature rather than the mechanics of it.
Your Max HP is mainly determined by your Class(es) and level(s)
I suggest checking out #learn-to-play for the free Basic Rules which tells you the foundational stuff for how the game works as well as how to make a character.
Good spirit!
And also feel free to ask any questions you might got
If you want to play a Druid I suggest when you get to the part with all the Classes to skip over the other classes' sections. No need to read how Wizard works if you want to play a Druid, for example.
Yay
Yup, your level 1 HP is always equal to the max roll of your hit die + your Con mod
Depends. You wearing armour?
Leather
are you wearing armor, what class
So like 11 plus 1 cuz of dex being 13?
I assume you are not a monk/barbarian but just to be sure
Okay, then its armor AC plus dex mod with no cap because its light armor
So leather armor gives like 11 hp? Then my dex 13 so plus one so my HP is 12?
Ok how do I determine my savings throws?
if you arent proficient its just the normal check
It’s your ability score modifiers, and +your proficiency modifier if ur proficient
the same mod that is
ooooh boy
what level are you?
your pb is +2 then
You're very fast on the uptake for your first character, my commendations
At Character Level 1 to 4, a character's proficiency bonus is +2
you add +2 to things youre proficient with
as a Warlock, you're proficient in Wisdom and Charisma saving throws, iirc
So what does that mean I add 2 to one of those mods?
no you're proficient in both of them, you add your PB to both saving throws
At base: A saving throw uses your ability modifier for it, respectively. Someone with 12 dex, being a +1 mod, applies that to dex saves, getting +1 to their dex save roll. They roll a 15 on the d20, they add 1, their save total was 16.
For you, as a Warlock, say you make a Charisma saving throw and had 15 in Charisma, providing a +2 mod. As a level 1 warlock you're proficient in Charisma saves and your PB is +2. So you roll your d20 for the save, add +2 from your Charisma modifier, and +2 from your Proficiency, for a total of +4 to the roll.
So if you rolled a 15 on the d20, you add a bonus of 4 in that case, for a total of 19
A character's saving throws lineup is just going to read as their respective ability modifiers, and then two of those are going to be higher numbers dependent on their class (which determines which 2 saves they are proficient in) (the amount they are higher being based on the proficiency bonus)
So in my stat mod and saving I would put plus 4? Or just put plus 4 in savings for Wis and cha
Using a 5th edition character sheet
For your saving throws:
Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence: It's just your modifier.
For Wisdom: Your Wisdom Modifier + your Proficiency Bonus (which would be +2 at level 1)
For Charisma: Your Charisma Modifier + your Proficiency Bonus (which would be +2 at level 1)
if you are proficient at something and roll for that thing, you add your Proficiency Bonus to the roll.
As a level 1 Warlock, you are proficient in Wisdom and Charisma saving throws.
Yep, 0+2 = 2, so whenever you make a Wisdom saving throw, you roll the d20 (lets say you get an 11) and add 2 (so now you got a 13 on the save!) and that's the save total
Ok thanks
anything else?
Yes
With each stat there's like a substat in it like wisdom has perception and a couple other extra stats under the set of wisdom do I get to pick one of those substats in wisdom to add 2 ? Or is it just on the wisdom?
those are Skills
Basically, when the DM has you make ability checks, decently often they'll be Ability (Skill) check
like an Intelligence check vs an Intelligence (History) check, or a Wisdom check vs a Wisdom (Perception) check
Ohhh how do I tell if I have a bonus and a wisdom perception check?
Same principle:
You add your (Ability) modifier to (Ability) checks.
If it uses a (Skill) and you are proficient in that skill, add your Proficiency bonus
At level 1, you'll gain skill proficiencies from your Background, your Class, and maybe your Species.
Warlock's skill proficiencies are
Choose 2: Arcana, Deception, History, Intimidation, Investigation, Nature, or Religion
Okay so what would I get if I was a tiefling warlock with the haunted one background
Any skills any of those say you get.
Ohhh
So I would pick any two of those and then add my proficiency bonus to it?
And that's at level one?
Yep. (You don't get 2 more every level tho this is just, the core features you start with)
Ok
I'll use one of my characters, a level 1 fighter, as an example
He has a Wisdom of 17, providing a +3 modifier
He has Proficiency in the Insight skill
Whenever he makes a Wisdom check, he'd add 3.
If he's making a Wisdom (Insight) check, he'd add 5. (Wisdom Modifier of 3, + his Proficiency Bonus at level 1, being +2, for the total of 5)
In total, he's proficient in the Athletics, Insight, Perception, Stealth, and Survival skills.
His Guide background gave Stealth and Survival
his Fighter class let him choose 2 out of a big list but he chose Athletics and Perception
and his Species (don't worry about it for now) gave him a choice in which he picked Survival.
When a background skill proficiency is made redundant you can often replace it, so I replaced it with insight. (Always double check with your DM!)
So if I make an intelligence investigation check I would add my modifier plasma proficiency bonus for a total of + 3 if I'm on a fire for intelligence is plus one and my proficiency bonus is Plus 2?
Sorry I was using text to speech
Provided you picked Investigation as a skill proficiency for your character, then yes, absolutely correct
Yay
Remember, "skill check" is not a proper rule term, it is a colloquialism for "Ability (Skill) check" (which is bothersome to say aloud)
Ok
I'm kind of stuck on the class features and special traits part of the character sheet
Idk how to mark it
It's just a blank square with shapes for action bonus
Action
Reaction and limited uses
Would you mind direct messaging me an image of that?
Is did
So I'm building my character and I need help what to do next
But you don't get invocations until like level two right?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190885-warlock
Warlock Class Features
As a Warlock, you gain the following class features when you reach the specified Warlock levels. These features are listed in the Warlock Features table.Level 1: Eldritch Invocations
You have unearthed Eldritch Invocations, pieces of forbidden knowledge that imbue you with an abiding magical ability or other lessons. You gain one invocation of your choice, such as Pact of the Tome. Invocations are described in the “Eldritch Invocation Options” section.
Your sheet displays "Armor Training", which means 2024 rules. 2024's warlock has this
Ohhh umm so what are the options 😅
And where would I put that on the character sheet
I would assume special trades
Oh that's a species
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/2190885-warlock#WarlockClassFeatures
scroll down until you get to Eldritch Invocation Options
I don't understand
Is it just like Eldritch invocation it's just what makes me a warlock like I get that at level one because I need that to cast spells?
Hey guys
No, the Pact Magic feature is what lets you cast spells
Eldritch Invocations are essentially a lot of your Warlock class features, but you choose them
Eyo, welcome to D&D
You should get over that level one the only option is elderton vocation?
Invocation**
Omg.
At level one the only option is pact magic?
What? No. At level 1, you get the Pact Magic and Eldritch Invocations class features
I'm still confused
The Eldritch Inovcations class feature lets you pick one Invocation to gain and just, have
And at higher levels you get more invocations
So you get
Pact Magic (lets you do spells)
Eldritch Invocations (gives you one Invocation of your choice that you qualify for)
Pact Magic is the feature that grants you spellcasting, so you get cantrips and your first prepared spells, from that.
Eldritch Invocations is the other thing that will provide... most of your unique warlock class features.
For example, at level 2... you immediately gain another 2, for a total of 3 invocations.
At level 5, you'd have a total of 5 invocations.
It fleshes out your capabilities a decent amount
Okay. But having packed magic doesn't affect stats or skills right?
Pact Magic is just what gives you spellcasting, like the Spellcasting feature on wizard, sorcerer, etc.
(It's just special for Warlock, fewer slots but they come back on a short rest, and the class in general simultaneously has access to Eldritch Invocations)
Ok
Features just do what they say they do.
As a Warlock, you gain the following class features when you reach the specified Warlock levels. These features are listed in the Warlock Features table.
In the Warlock Features table, it says that at level 1 you get the "Eldritch Invocations, Pact Magic" class features, so you get both.
Pact Magic says you have a couple of cantrips and spells of your choice (that Warlock gets to have)
Eldritch Invocations says "choose an Eldritch Invocation you qualify for: You get that." and you get more invocations at higher levels as the table also indicates.
So pack magic is what gives me the ability to cast my cantrips and spells like
Chill touch and poison spray
And hellish rebuke and dissonant whispers?
Looks like a perfectly valid selection
I know the patron is the great old one
When you want to cast Hellish Rebuke or Dissonant Whispers, you'll have to spend a spell slot to fuel them
for chill touch or poison spray you can cast them at will
Ohhh ok
And then on the first level spells depending on how strong the spell is I had to have a short or long rest?
Before I can use it again
No, more like
To cast a spell of level 1 or higher, you have to spend a Spell Slot, of a spell slot level equal to or higher than the spell's listed level.
To regain your spell slots, you need to rest. Warlock regains their spell slots from Pact Magic on a short rest. Everyone else has to take a Long Rest to regain theirs.
Cantrips, you can just cast them freely, they don't cost anything but the casting time.
Ohhh nice
At level 1 Warlock, you have one level 1 spell slot.
So you can cast one 1st level spell before needing a Short Rest to regain your spell slot.
Don't worry, you'll get a second spell slot when you're a level 2 warlock. Then you get two spell slots per short rest!
But, if you take a look at invocations, some of them might be potent features, or even the ability to cast a spell for free! Like Mage Armor without needing a spell slot!
Check the Warlock Features table.
At level 1, it says you have "Spell Slots: 1" and "Slot Level: 1"
You have one spell slot, and that slot is a level 1 spell slot.
As for Prepared spells, you have 2, such as your choices, Hellish Rebuke and Dissonant Whispers.
To cast either of those spells, you need to pay a slot to do so.
And I can only cast one because I have one spell slot?
You get your spell slot back on a Short Rest, because Pact Magic, the feature that gave it to you, says the following:
Spell Slots. The Warlock Features table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your Warlock spells of levels 1–5. The table also shows the level of those slots, all of which are the same level. You regain all expended Pact Magic spell slots when you finish a Short or Long Rest.
Think of spell slots a little like tickets.
You have permissions to go on the "I cast Hellish Rebuke" ride and the "I cast Dissonant Whispers" ride. To do so, you give your ticket.
You have one ticket. To get it back after using it, you only need to spend an hour resting, whereas other classes would have to come back the next day to go on any more of those 'rides'.
Alternatively, let's take a sci-fi analogy.
You've got an energy cell (your spell slot) and it has one level-1 charge in it (it is a level 1 spell slot).
You have two tools (your two spells). You have to spend that energy on a tool to use it (pay the slot to cast the spell).
To recharge your cell, you can spend just a short rest to do so, everyone else only recharges theirs on a long rest.
I meant like I can only choose to cast hellish rebuke or dissonant whispers in the same battle and I can only cast one of those spells per Battle before a rest?
Basically.
But you do get your spell slot back on a short rest. Theoretically you can get 3 of those spells in just one adventuring day!
I'm sorry 😅
A level 1 cleric, for example, would have two level 1 spell slots, and only regains them on a long rest.
I'm not vary good with lots of words when it comes to reading rules tbh 😅
Well, D&D is a system that is composed of written rules, that runs on the engine of the human brain. The machine can't run the game without the data!
Ya ik
Take your time with it, but you still gotta read
After all, the reading has been mandatory for conversation :P
im new to dnd, and i got the task of doing the DMing in my friend grp so i have been reading up on rules and stuff. I feel i got the basics, I have read our adventurese to a teeth and fixed somestuff that i didnt like in the story. is it oki to ask if my hook preperation is good enough for new players? if not where can i get help with it.
Check out #dm-discussion , we can only give you a bit of input but they can give you ‘professional’ advice from a bunch of people

What is a Dungeon Master?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
How does it work?
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
Where do I start?
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
I'm assuming it's like tabo or something to use the same character if it dies. Like let's say my level 5 warlock dies it would be kinda bad or not in the spirit of the game to just restart the charger at level one?
often, the DM will have you make a new character at the same level
oh hearing this makes me feel like an evil dm 😄 as a new dm here i would probably allow you to reroll your warlocks stats and start from level 1 but keep and just reset your spells to level 1 😛
Having a big level disparity, especially one where someone is at levels 1 to 4 as the lower level, is notoriously dangerous for that low level character in combats that have monsters that threaten the higher level ones
It’s overall discouraged
As a DM of ~4 years
I would not have death be resolved as a duplicate coming in at level 1.
As a DM of ~1.5-2 years.
I second that
Wait if I'm an Abyssal tiefling I know the cantrip poison spray and if I had a different can trip other than poison spray like if I had Eldritch blast and chill touch would I be able to cast poison spray at will like a can trip and have basically three can trips to cast or can only cast two?
That would lead to a 'death spiral'
the rest of the party having to put in more effort, when the difficulty level is already at "someone died"
and now, what chances does someone with ~9 or 10 HP have, against monsters that have higher damage per round to contend with ~40 hp?
good i found this server cause in my mind you would have to start over from level 1 adventures with new characters basicly 😛
Think of it this way
If you have one apple from a roadside vendor, and then you have another two apples from the grocery store, then why would you not have three apples you can choose to eat?
So yes?
Picking Poison Spray from Warlock just means you'd have Poison Spray as a Warlock cantrip, for any features that specifically care about if a spell is cast as a "class spell"
So yeah you can have that and whatever two warlock cantrips you want
So in a battle I could cast two can trips and then plus if I wanted to I could cast poison spray if that wasn't one of my two can trips?
You're not limited in how much you can cast cantrips. Cantrips are free. The only cost is the time doing so
Mhm
Like how a fighter wouldn't be limited in terms of how much they can swing their sword or punch with their fists. They just can't necessarily do them all at the same time (for the analogy)
Ohhh
indeed. What a fighter would be limited in, is something like Action Surge, a Fighter class feature that lets them take a second action within a single turn... once per rest.
So it would be unplausible to in the same battle cast poison spray chill touch and elitch blast?
If the combat lasted 3 rounds, giving you 3 turns in total, thus giving you 1 action on each of those turns
There's no innate reason you wouldn't be allowed to cast poison spray one round, chill touch another, and eldritch blast on another.
The only cost to a cantrip is the casting time.
It just depends on the DM I guess and how long the battle goes on for
No, not dependent on the DM.
Aaa ok
You can cast cantrips like a monk can punch with their fists.
There's no innate "Oh i have run out of punches, I literally cannot make unarmed strikes anymore", just like there is no "I have run out of cantrips I cannot cast chill touch anymore" (or any other cantrip)
Feel free to post it here or in #character-discussion and we can take a look at it
Any tips for my player ‘ character voice? I asked ai but it wasn’t very useful
Something easy to remember and not painful to do for extended periods of time, and not annoying to listen to
Are you sure you're in the right channel? Might be a good question for #dnd-discussion or #character-discussion.
I presume they're a newcomer, given the channel, and recent join date for this server
But it is important that one does not do a voice that hurts after a few minutes, is difficult to do/remember, and is annoying to hear for long times
You can also not use voices at all and describe your character's actions/communication as third person. "Donna does/says <thing>. "
Hello, are there any online games of dnd?
Lots!
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Thank you. Also, I was wondering where I could find someone who’d be willing to teach the basics, I know everything is online and all I have to do is read, but I learn best when I have someone who can go over this with me directly.
ah, on the topic of that, i mentioned this server to a friend of mine. if i persuade him to join, how common would it be for us to join the same game, on basis of listing being limited if i had to gander. id love to introduce him to dnd proper, and honestly im just curious what he might do in a game. i understand groups looking for dm arent necessarily the commonplace occurrence
#dnd-rules is all about rules, is all i can say
Little more complex. Try this: skim through the first couple of chapters of the rules, put a character together for practice with the process.
Then find a game that doesn't say something like "experienced players only" or "lore nerds will love this". Most tables are perfectly willing to take new players as long as you show willing and don't have to be hand-taught everything.
If you advertise yourself as a pair, you've got a better chance than if you search individually and try to back-door the other in once one's accepted.
Yeah, if they're able to just point you to the paragraph of the rule in question, and you can read and process it, you're like 90% past any troubles
noted
Sorry, I don’t want to intrude or anything, but do you think it’d be possible for us to maybe have our own game and we could look for a DM who would have enough patience and is willing to guide new players, and then we could look for players to fill in. I think that would solve the limited listings too.
Reminder that it's off-topic to solicit/organize games outside of the Looking For Game channels. Please use those channels to find a game.
See #find-a-game to learn how to use those LFG channels.
Thanks!
Oops sorry about that, I just wanted to reply directly to their message.
With regard to that, you organise a schedule you and your friend can commit to, you do what you can to prepare, and raise a post in #looking-for-dm indicating you'd love to take part in an adventure to learn the ropes.
Thank you for answering my questions
I got more of my blood elf done
Kinda want to throw him into a campaign but idk
I don’t know if my ex will be on it since they’re on discord often n don’t want to cause any fuss
Any suggestions?
Blood Elf? Are you using a homebrew subrace?
#find-a-game is a good place to start looking for online games on this server
I’m still new to the terminology I’m just going off my champions of norath character he was a dark elf but I like adding the blood sound of it haha
Ah a Drow, cool!
Yes!!!
Drows do be cool!
Omgggg
Btw if anyone wants to add me so we can throw ideas im down. The names sparky ⚡️✨
Discussing characters is our jam in #character-discussion !
Gotta love discussing characters in character discussion
one of my favorite genders /lh
(though there's some hiccups in there at the moment)
that sounds weird to say. i should edit the /lh to it
Wat
Oh?
A beginners trying to do stuff without knowing the rules first
Don’t make that mistake
Me?
No
no no, nothing serious. its just some 2016 twitter shitpost thats been recycled to death and back a dozen times. "one of my favorite genders" in general originates from that i think. no too sure
Someone in #character-discussion
But it’s fine now!
It’s not concern, just genuine and absolutely confusion
Please do feel free to call me out if I cause anything. I’d rather correct myself than be kicked haha
same
Hmm. Spell the class that’s stereotypically stealthy
Sometimes channels get sidetracked. Being brief a couple users are trying to get another to check out this channel and #learn-to-play because they have both a lot of ideas and little mechanical knowledge of D&D.
Feel free to interrupt though, it's an open forum. Unless for some reason it gets skipped over most people are happy to help
Thanks sm!
As long as you accept the advice, people like talking about dnd here
(And remain respectful of course)
Yes yes of course
If I wanted to run a campagin with friends (previously only been a player) - so our usual DM can play
What key books/rulesets would I need to have/follow in 2026?
2024 dnd rules
And that won't change for a while I imagine?
Not for a while no
Alright thank you!
@meager bear check out #find-a-game if you wanna find a game
I don’t think you’re ready to start one yet tho
(Not a random ping this is a continuation from DM’s)
Dam
You should also know basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
You got classes, and ability score modifiers done tho
The rest, apart from maybe combat, is easy enough to explain
Ik combat
Kind of annoying how I can't choose Farmer as background when making a new char because I don't have the PHB 😛
Unfortunately, not all the options are free.
Guys I just need a dm 😞

Hey guys, how to rp / do voices for my first character? Like any tips or something
Figure out a voice that
A: doesn't destroy your throat
B: isn't annoying/difficult to do yourself
C: Isn't annoying to hear for more than a couple sentences
as DM and player, I mostly differentiate my characters by pitch and how soft I speak.
i find a description and image really help to figure out what a character might sound like in my head. that doesn't necessarily mean i can make that particular voice and accent. do what you can if you'd like. if you end up slipping in and out of voice, that's fine. you aren't a professional and its just a table game.
as a session progresses, my voices tend to devolve into Mr. Krabs, Agent Smith, or some cockney falsetto accent that reminds me of the ones on Monty Python's Flying Circus. doesn't matter how i start them.
Voice acting carcinization
A catchphrase (even if it's one you use off-mic) can help set a character's voice in your head. Aside from that, tone, pacing and vocabulary can be good indicators.
A trick if you have a particular voice you want to use but aren't sure you can sustain is to deliver a line or two with it, but switch to describing what they say after. Possibly throw in some description as to how they're speaking to keep people imagining it.
alright so!
would anyone be down to help me?
i wanna know which character sheet Players use mostly
and on what do players also mostly play on, like Homebrew or
what do players play on
Beyond is a common one, as are Owlbear, Roll20 and Foundry. Might be a few more, but those are at least the most common ones people use for characters and playing, though what "most" people use isn't gonna be relevant if your group uses something else
oh thank you
alright so which one would you recommend a first timer?
Well, Beyond is a common one for sheets, alongside now being owned by the Wizards of the Coast. Easy to get into and make some practice characters
uh-huh, to make practice characters but what about, uh, Actual characters for prolonged use?
Same thing works too. Was just making a suggestion to give it a go
Are there any online campaigns played by text instead of voice? Environment doesn't really let me do things like that in peace. (never played)
Yup, those are play by post games. They can be harder to find but keep an eye on #looking-for-players as DMs so post them there.
Can someone explain what generally happens when your character levels up like what changes is it just hp or does anything else change
Usually, when you level up, you gain HP based on your class and your Constitution modifier. You also gain some new abilities based on your class. You can check the description of each class to see what you get at each level.
Ooh thank you!
hey guys
boo yah, i wont be doing voices in a long long time then. i sound like an asthmatic, slightly higher-pitched kratos. there really is no voice that doesnt destroy my throat. part of the reason id like to get into DnD to work on voice training
Hello, I’m very very new to dnd. An older friend introduced it to me a week ago and I’ve been interested ever since, I’ve learnt the core basics and want to learn more by playing! If you know any dm that is ok with a very new player and one that can guide me a bit as well do let me know, also if you have any tips in general that would be greattt
Hi all! Super new to the community! I’ve done a one shot, and loved it. I still need help with knowing what dice to roll, and knowing what i’m not allowed to do and do. I’ve seen a few things where i should buy the 2024 book? Wondering if that’s necessary! Honestly i’d just love someone i could come to and ask questions as i go along cause i have a feeling most DMs don’t wanna hold my hand the first few sessions as i learn

And for both of you, if you've got any specific questions we'll be happy to answer them in this chat here any time.
Thank you! Will ask if I get stuck<3
hello guys my name is yali and im trying to get into d&d i wanted to ask if there's a voice chat or someone can help me get the hang of it, more then just youtube videos so I can be ready for me and my friends first time playing it
There isn't voice chat on this server, no.
But we can certainly help if you have specific questions! Just ask here and someone will answer.
ok ty, can i make my own race in my game or are premade races i need to choose from because i want to play a talking mouse with a flaming sword
There are set species to choose from, and unfortunately mice aren't one of them. You can find the list of free species here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions
Anything that's not an official species would be considered "homebrew", which is a word for any unofficial, player made content. It's not recommended for new players to use homebrew.
hello! i have a question, where do i look for ppl to play with? create a group of dnd i mean

how does it work
How does what work?
ty dosh
how do i look for a group using that link?? im confused
Hey, how do I make a post about looking for players?
The #find-a-game link explains step by step how to make a post and look for a group. Give it a read!
Just a quick question, are Geppettin classed as homebrew or not? Ive found them on the dnd& beyond website but its in the valdas spire pack not one of the regular ones
They are third-party content.
So it's like a more formalized homebrew if you will.
It's not official content from Wizards of the Coast/D&D
Ohhh okay, thank you!
i have a homebrew artefact for dwarf and idk shuld i use it in my campain :
its like greyish scrap metal heart wich changes his hight he cant change how does it work .he is kinda cursed with it so he is constantly normal size
should i use it ?
ask your dungeon master what homebrew they'll allow.
We can learn together if you wanna add feel free
Thanks!
he said its cool

Oh awesome thanks! I'll check these out
How’s everyone doing this fine day
jawesome
Rather well i must say
ima roll initiative for that
@red parcel
so deffo ask how you should determine the stat points (pointbuy, rolling, standard array)
tbh my bets are on standard, especially if you are new (but ultimately its up to your dm)
Oh gosh thanks sm
My phones bugging out so it's hard for me to see who's mentioned me, but thanks! (Also there ain't no way you're new to this lol you're just too good)
^
Would anyone be upset if I screenshot just these couple messages?
Future reference when I get off work
go ahead, if u have more questions u can also dm me or sth, ill try my best haha
I can also send you a character sheet of sth i have lying around if you want in case you havent seen one yet
That'd be awesome!
might just be a bit hgiher level: also beware, I like to "minmax" a bit lol
sent u sth
i'm doing pretty good thanks
Hi never played D&D before, always wanted to play decided to take the jump, any recommendations where to start or how to start, what i should be looking for to get into it, would be from an online perspective only, cheers in advance
Are there any games going on right now?
Millions probably, but in terms of one you or me can join not too many
I recommend learning the rules first in #learn-to-play if you haven’t already, and THEN look at #find-a-game
Look at my message above
Specifically, the Free Rules are a good resource, read through the first few chapters
And feel free to ask any questions, we’ll be happy to help!
ok thanks
Bro love the name
cheers
Sorry had to go pick up the kids. What did you send it on?

Start with #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
First 2 chapters of the free rules lay out the core game mechanics and how to create a character respectively
We can learn together with the help of this amazing server if you wanna pm me feel free!

Awesome
Hey guys, I’m new to DnD, one of my friends wanted to get me into the game and it’s honestly overwhelming to get everything at first. I’m also nervous to start a campaign with strangers without being fully prepared, what are some things I can do besides watching YouTube tutorials so I can be more prepared? I really liked the game for it’s creativity and imagination aspect but I just want to cross all my Ts and dot my Is
Honestly, just look at reccomendations from videos, and take time to look into what they talk about
You can read the free rules
Check out #learn-to-play
But that might be more overwhelming…
One thing I did with my players when they first started playing with me was that I showed them the high rollers bg3 cast videos (my players liked bg3) and it helped them learn basic mechanics
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
How do you do ability scores while playing? Say a player gets a 5 and they have a intellegince of 15 ? How would that work?
Every 2 ability score that goes above 10 you get a +1, so that would be a 7
The formula is (ability score-10)/2
Rounded down
Uhhh, I don't get it sorry-
Aight ummm
Is there an lfg channel?
I always have to look up a chart that shows the modifiers 😭
For each ability score, say 10, they have a corresponding modifier (in this case +0)
10-11 is +0, 12-13 is +1, 14-15 is +2 etc
I’d be down to join a campaign with some people if they’d be willing to bear with me for the first session lol
And I’ll take all this info into consideration, thank you all for your help!!!
Check out #find-a-game for info
Then you add the stat modifier to the roll
With all due respect, please stop disrupting the chat. A no is a no, and also 1v1’ing in dnd isn’t really smt you can just do. This isn’t a video game
Does that make sense now?
Basically, each stat score has a stat modifier. Then you add that modifier to your roll that uses that stat.
Server is for discussing dnd and getting advice not for playing
I need a visual representation sorry, I been looking at Google and others to find a visual representation
Aight lemme get one
I second this

Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.

When the DM asks for a roll, you roll the dice and add your ability modifier (you can keep the table on hand if you wish) and add your proficiency bonus if applicable
I'm the DM for my family
Okay
Different actions will require different ability scores/stats.
attacking with a glaive is usually strength, backflips are dexterity, doing math is intelligence, etc
We all never played so I'm trying to figure out how to use the ability scores during play
To be general about it, the ability modifiers modify d20 Tests. There are 3 types of d20 tests, Attack Rolls, Saving Throws, and Skill Checks.
The former 2 you’ll do yourself mainly whenever you have an enemy attack a player, or if an enemy needs to make a saving throw against a player-made effect.
You’ll mainly be calling for players to make skill checks rather than having an NPC do it. Whenever a player decides to do something with a meaningful chance of failure and/or success, that also wouldn’t apply to one of their other actions, you would call for a skill check in a relevant skill.
As Nugget provided an example, you might call for an Acrobatics check if a player was say, trying to do a backflip or walk a tightrope.
Ohhh
Anyone starting a campaign in here?

Using information your character shouldn’t know
does anybody know what like stats a half dragon humanoid character would have?
Depends on the class
roll 4d6 and drop the lowest. do that another 5 times. pop those into the abilities. increase one stat by two, and another stat by one. bam, you've got stats for a half-dragon humanoid character.
Half-Dragons are not an official playable option. Dragonborn is the closest you can get. Your ability scores are independent of species, you generate them using one of the 3 official methods:
- Point Buy
- Standard Array
- Rolled
hellloooooooo im a slightly new barbarian and i need some help in terms of what the hell some of these words mean
Where you put those those stats depends on your class
Sure shoot your questions!
hit stuff with axe
duh
i know dice n stats n stuff but in terms of like
2014 or 2024 rules
idk what this stuff means man
2024 was a refresh of the 2014 rules. You can play with either version you like.
5e has 2 rulesets, 2014 (the original release year) and 2024 (the "update")
like what the hell is foundry
oh ok cool
An online TTRPG platform
Foundry is FoundryVTT, a virtual tabletop
OHHHH
another side question who in their right mind thought up paid games like dawg im just trying to roll dice
Usually paid games come with a higher degree of expected quality and consistency, though that's not always the case. I've only ever been in free games but I've heard great things from friends who have tried paid ones.
henlo peoples
is there anyone who would be able to help me create a character? this is my first time playing dnd and i am reading through the book buh i still dont know what i am doing. qwq
yeah np
omg tysm
Yeah sure! #character-discussion is the best channel to get ideas and help with a character
oh ytyt
This channel is best for foundational stuff like stats, skill proficiencies and rules tho
But for backstories, concepts, builds (not optimised just regular) and such character discussion is great
Those DND paid games are ussaly more visual, there's art, voice acting, and maps. I'm guessing. and it's super tiring to be a DM.
I've been on one of the paid games
and it was great.
Read #learn-to-play , specifically the first two chapters of the basic rules are great, and ask any questions you might have here

Hey! Dnd newcomer here. I’m just looking into the hobby as something to get into in the future. I was looking over the classes and bard caught my eye specifically because one of the instruments to use are a drum. I was wondering how the drum effects the way a bard plays, and how an instrument does that in general?
There's no specific differences between the instruments. A bard can use an instrument as a focus for their spells
No
to whoever deleted my message uh, sorry i didn't mean to break rules, i forgor
i would be glad to help
Sigh still no good groups yet…
That would be awesome. Do you mind if I DM you?
Like how to look for a group?
#looking-for-dm , #looking-for-players , #looking-for-community , and #1050206572535623690 are going to be your go to places on the server
#find-a-game also has resources available
Like your groups so far have fizzled out?
Or is it that you’re having trouble finding a group?
To help with that there are some steps you can take.
For example, having a discussion on how much time everyone wants to commit to can go a long way.
Just dropped in

Hi everyone!
Hi everyone! I'm E.Z, I would consider myself pretty "new" to D&D since I haven't played it before but I have watched a lot of videos and content of it for 3 years now. Why haven't I played it? Lol I don't have friends:D
Lol sorry for the weird introduction 🥲
all good!
I’ve been a DM for years making entire soundtracks for my campaigns for every location and then a set theme for each kinda dialog from neutral npcs hostile friendly to the random creature my players gaslit me into making real after one of them dreamed it and now that I’m a player I don’t know how to enjoy the game anymore because there’s no music.
Like I cannot play the game anymore unless I’m DM because I’m so used to also DJing an entire soundtrack for us I can’t play without music anymore I can’t be the only DMZ who prepared music for the whole campaign right???
The game just isn’t fun as a player and I don’t wanna DM anymore but no DM I can’t play find makes a soundtrack for their campaigns so now I feel like Ive locked myself out of the game because I spoiled myself as a DM
Also one of my buddies is a Tabaxi so that also doesn’t help 🥀
I’ve only been able to play 4 sessions as a player it’s just not the same
Also forgot to mention that I'm really into the worldbuilding of it all. I may not be an artist but I am an aspiring writer so I would love to collab with an artist eventually when I finish writing the worldbuilding stuff
I like this guy
Thank you good little robot 🥀
I recommend looking into Kenku FM and bringing it up to your group, asking if you can help with setting audio for the game, and make sure to tell your DM they can send you music to play (like if they want a specific theme for a specific kind of enemy)
Yippeeee
You earned yourself a friend
But like ours was handcrafted for the campaign and I made music for scenarios I knew my group would absolutely get into and stuff it’s just not the same using someone else’s music 🥀

You guys want to see the character sheet i made
Yessssss
Guys if im brand new to dnd what should i do to get started as im stuck on what i should do first?
I’d avoid any furry races that can fly when you make your character I’ve had a ton of issues with my original character I made being banned in every single campaign because god forbid I can fly.
It sucks but it’s the first thing I tell people when they play because you think flight is cool until nobody else does :C
So what you do is say everything you want in a character then gi to grok amd say put this in dnd character sheet form
level 1 flying is just pretty damn crazy
It's also quite risky. Even a fall of 20 feet could knock a level 1 character out.
Wait so why are furry races not allowed?
They are allowed but usually the ones that have the skill Flight are banned
Dragonborn can’t fly so they are allowed usually
By banned I mean banned by the majority of DMs who hate fun :C
OHHH
Sorry I read wrong
I thought you said, furry races AND races that can fly
Some DMs like me are cool as heck and we allow flight races :3
For dragonborn it depends on the source and their level. They can indeed fly for short durations in 2024, at level 5.
Lol let's make a homebrew dedicated to only flying races
Yeah that’s true but I mean the furry races that can just fly fly I think we can all agree the temp flying of Dragonborns is sick
YESSSSSSSSSS EVEN THE NON FLYING ONES WILL FLY
Yeah, and at level 5, some spellcasters can pick up the fly spell anyway, so at that point you might as well.
Yeeee but people hate furries 🥀
it's the internet man i'd expect at least one furry in all my games if i was dm-ing online
Fr idk why people hate furry races they’ve been around since first edition (I hate the tabaxi art in first edition 🥀)
The easiest money the dnd team hasn't yet chosen to make is to release an official dog pc species. 🐶
i mean there's some werewolf stuff
I'd not really count it. Werewolf is "once you turn, you become an npc" territory. I mean things you could select at character creation.
Closest we have is probably shifter, and that's just dog-like features.
Not a newcomer myself but helping one learn the basics of dnd today, anyone have advice on important things to go over? We're planning on making a character sheet and then doing a small combat so he can get the feel of the game but I'd like to know if anyone has ideas of what else would be important knowledge to pass to a beginner
Anyways, I'm Ixrin and my pronouns are in my nickname and my bio.
I have played D&D exactly once and my favorite spell is Fire Bolt.
I'd say the order in the basic rules is a good one to follow. First the "Playing the Game" section, then "Character Creation."
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
With those two, you basically have the gist of the game and can start playing. Anything else can be checked on the fly or made up by the DM. You can then look any mistakes up afterwards having fun is the priority
hello chat
I’m Jet (he/him) and I’m fairly new to D&D, I’ve dabbled in it for a little while and I’ve played BG3 but that’s about it
I quite like Eldritch Blast :)
Welcome! If we can assist with anything, let us know.
As someone who has played D&D exactly once and just recently, I think the most major hurdle for me was figuring out all of my stats for my character sheet and playing according to them and knowing which dice go to which thing/action during combat and gameplay. (Keep in mind I printed out a blank character sheet and filled it in the good old fashioned way with pen and paper.)
The rest was pretty intuitive imo. Keep those in mind and I think they'll do great!
I'm by no means an expert, but those things would be the most useful from my own personal experience.
I'm trying my hardest to make a Kobold character sheet. This is a lot harder than I originally thought it would be 🥲
Where are you getting stuck?
I have got the dragons of stormwreck isle box set but i am quite confused and dont know how to play properly, i got into dnd through stranger things and i really want to play a campaign

Do u have a book with the kobold race in it
There isn't one in the free rules
I'd use halfling if I didn't have access to the official kobold option. All you have to do is change the description.
What's up legends
is it posible to make natsu from fairy tail in dnd?
Draconic Sorcerer with Red Dragon Heritage
It is possible but it really stems to the DM if he allows it.
Can you help me I'm Wrighting most of my stuff down but alot I'm forgetting
100% replicas are often very difficult in dnd
If your DM is on board, ask them to help
Kk
It's more the stuff I gain and from my stuff
Like what features you get?
Yeah and stat buffs and other stuff
You could read the rules on it?
I know...😭
Ik you hate reading but really people can’t just repeatedly run through every step with you
And certainly not forever
Then check
Search up the rules
Read the rules
Bang, you know the rules. If it’s still confusing, THEN ask.
Kk
I don't have nothing on DND, I just started getting into it two days ago lol
Hey! Any tips for a new DM using the Stormwreck Isle beginning starter set?
Just how to make a Kobold character sheet without having to pay $30 to actually include said kobold XD
You could try #1029833015423143957 for specific tips, or #dm-discussion for general chat about how to prepare and run a game.
Mark it up as a halfling until you get a group that can share resources.
Share resources?
D&D Beyond has sharing options for folk that subscribe allowing them to share their content with a campaign group.
hello guys, i am thinking of making my first ever character. should i use dndbeyond? or the free pdf to manually make a character
I've been running the game, but it seems to take so much time to get from one part of the campaign to the next. How much of that is on the players themselves or on the DM? From what I know, we should all be working together to move the campaign along?
I see
Have they got a goal?
Have you also talked about this concern with your group yet?
good point, let me consier that....
Not yet
It could also be a a compatibility with the campaigns type.
Location, situation, opposition, complication.
essentially, they're trying to follow the personal goals for each specific player that are included in the pre-made character sheets
Are they being presented with opportunities to advance those that align with the scenarios in the module?
It may be the type of campaign, my group is comprised of players who excel in very straightforward campaigns that don’t require them to keep track things beyond two sessions.
That’s why they excelled in Dragon of Icespire peak and Wild Beyond the Witchlight but struggled with Strixhaven.
Both dragon of icespire peak and witchlight had straight forward goals presented to the players at the start of the session.
anybody know how to do stats for a level five vengeance paladin?
Generally you’ll to prioritize Str, Con, and Cha

Question about bastions. I know there is the orders and only the owner of said facility can issue the orders. But. Can others in the party use the room when we r there. Can another character use the library for research and have the same result. I guess im just trying to find out if facilities are useful at all in person. Everything in the book talks about what happens when orders r issued like when u r away
Some bastion facilities have mechanical effects that can be used outside of a bastion turn, but not all of them. You have to read the description of each special facility to see if it has something like that or not. But all of these features refer to things "you" can do, which means its directly referring to the bastion owner. Other party members won't get those same benefits. However, its important to remember that those are just the mechanical effects of the bastion. You can still role play with it however you like. For example, if a party member goes to your bastion, and one of your special facilities is a library, they won't be able to do the "research" effect as described in the special facility description, but they are still in a room full of books, and nothing stops them from reading those books. Its no different from if you went to a library in a city or something. Its just up to the DM to determine what they'd actually be able to learn
Ok. Ty. I'm trying to figure out if bastions are a good fit for our current campaign so im trying to find as much info as possible and the book only gives so much.
I'm currently running a campaign where the players have bastions. I think they've been a lot of fun, but they are pretty campaign specific. It works best if your players have a "home city" that they come back to after each adventure or quest. If the campaign is about traveling the world, or if the players like to just go wherever the wind takes them, then it will be tough to make them work
We r playing curse of strahd. I'm not sure it's woth it for this campaign.
Yeah, I'm not sure that's really the type of campaign that meshes well with bastions
If only because there's no way that ||Strahd would leave you alone to do bastion things for weeks at a time. It's his domain after all||
That's a fair point.
I've never played Curse of Strahd, and I've purposely avoided spoilers for it, so I wouldn't know if they are a good fit for that or not. If you want to talk about that campaign specifically, you should do so in #1029833015423143957
I concur. I've used bastions in LMoP but am not using them for CoS even though its the same group
good points. maybe I can create some kind of unified goal that is side by side their individual quests
You could also start with just one goal.
For dragon of icespire peak, the players have a quest board and each quest has a clear like get this item, defeat these enemies, and so on. Not personal but easy to follow.
Whereas with witchlight the campaign provides aligned personal goals. Which can be boiled downed to , these three witches took some important from us and we're going to get it back.
Yeah, if you want things to move forward quickly, clear goals and clear ways to move toward them are both important
If I know what I'm trying to do but have no idea what the next step is, you get a lot of random flailing and wandering around
It's also good to have backup plans to keep your playing moving forward even if their dice fail them
A common pitfall is also having progression being dependent by a dice roll
Yeah, never lock a plot critical anything behind a single die roll
Because that will always be the one your players fail
hey guys im a first time dnd player, i had a question. looks like most half orcs have the one eyes gruumsh trying to influence them, i was thinking of making a half orc warlock that had a contract with a forest fae as his sponsor. is stuff like that possible?
Hello, peeps, new here (to the whole genre of games)
What is the best way to play for a new player?
Any groups here that allow newbies to join?
Hey guys im new to dnd and i wanna get into it, i started with baldurs gate 3 and loved it so I wanna try and join a campaign, if there’s an easy way for new players to join one please let me know
Many! Just mind out for games that say things like "experienced players only" or "minmax hardcore dungeon survival".
Read the first couple of chapters in the Free Rules to get started. Put a character together for practice. #character-discussion can help there. Then find a game!
@wild onyx Thank you! Will certainly do so!
See above for you, too.
You'll want to talk to your DM in terms of game lore, but I'm general, yes you could make a half orc warlock
Hi guys, I just learned how to play D&D
Thats great
Hey, I have three friends, four if I include myself as a friend, who are looking for a DM or just a DnD session. We have had found a hard time finding people.
Congrats!
In all honesty, the easiest way for you to get a game going will be for one of you to DM. Otherwise you can try the looking channels, but your odds will be worse
would this be the right channel to ask how to properly roleplay/play in general in PBP/text games? i have been playing for roughly 5 months in 2 other campaigns but sometimes i want to partake in one shots, due to some personal stuff i cant really talk in vcs much.
Ye
If you’re a newcomer, and you got a question, and it’s dnd related, you can probably ask it here
And my answer is to add a sort of mannerism to the character’s actions or speech, as well as throw in some descriptions of what the character is actually doing. Imagining if the character was in a book can work.
Imma be honest I joined my first pbp campaign fairly recently, so I feel ya
But that was what worked for me
Should I give an example
yes please! im thinking of joining a server that might have one/two shots
Reuben chants a spell, holding up his shield with unwavering faith
“Goddess Hestia, heed my call! May thy eternal light guide my path and your Sacred Flame cleanse this world of evil”
Streaks of holy flame fly towards the wretched being, its body engulfed by the divine blaze of the goddess
Hi new, I’m Nugget
How can I help you today?
💔
I need help on generally getting a grasp of the game and how not to mess up a character
anything specific that you're worried about?
Then i recommend checking out #learn-to-play and, particularly the first few chapters of the free basic rules, and asking any questions you might have!
Mostly just not doing anything dumb that might make me look like a complete IDIOT
We’ll be happy to answer them
Also character creation guide: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Ic
Ummm. Learn what your character can do, freshen up your understanding of the rules, and maybe learn some key terms.
Hm. Ok thanks.
I just figured out how to play, but I’ve never played before and I can’t find anyone to play with
Then I recommend checking #find-a-game if you haven’t already
Hello, is there any sites anyone would reccomend to practice playing (preferably free) ive finally managed to create a character and i want to test some gameplay
Ummmm, it’s a bit odd to practice playing dnd considering it’s a social game
There’s an interactive adventure in #learn-to-play , maybe that can help?
My schedules a bit all ofer the place so i cant commit to a campaign at the moment, thats why!
Maybe a one shot?
Im keeping my eye out for one
Thing is, it’s a bit hard to practice a social roleplaying game by playing alone, what specifically are you trying to practice?
I need to make a community name what should it be?
Mimics n’ monsters
What is encumbrance
I just want to get used to moving my character and the different attacks/spells
It’s when you exceed your carry limit
Ok so should i keep it or disable it?
Oh you might be able to find somewhere that can simulate combat
Keep it
Depends
You want to be able to know more spells, or be able to enhance the spells you already have?
Than wizard to learn more spells
If that’s what you want, you can’t get much better than wizard
Do i need to read everything cuz there’s like to much to read am im lazy
If you’re feeling lazy, I recommend just learning how to make a character, basic ability checks, modifiers, core gameplay, classes and combat.
And of course, if you have any specific questions, please ask away! This channel is meant for it, and there are plenty of great people who should be willing to help you.
hihi
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
Actually planning on looking for a group to join, wanna jump into a casual campaign and have fun.
Then I recommend checking out #find-a-game for more information
hiya! i just made my first ever character sheet! i was wondering if its okay not to add too much background like can you create it during gameplay? (i really didnt know what to put/not sure what or how much small details to add yet)
I’d say you should have around 2 or three sentences MINIMUM, but yeah don’t need too much
Original
Turning point/ what gave them power
Motivation
Done
okay! tyty! i was definitely overthinking it. that sounds easier to think of!
Does anyone have a cool name for a female wizard monk
Wizard…monk?
Why. Just…why.
That multiclass is, to say the least, very questionable
Idk thought id be a cool combo
Plus, I don’t recommend multiclassing for beginners
Oh ok
what first came to my mind was astrid
It’s the easiest way to make your characters really weak, if you don’t know what you’re doing
Thx
i started with a ranger :3 thought id be easiestand can learn spell later myb
If you want to shoot fire or lightning or other elements from your hands as you beat stuff up Elemental Warrior monk could fit
I just want a wizard who can throw hands
elemental warrior sounds so cool lolol
Does alignment effect how ur character is or just how they act
Alignment is kinda like worldview
Oh ok
And for faith is it like irl religions or can i just make up some god and say I believe in that
Then wait to do that
Ok
Here, this might give you some ideas: https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse
think of it more like
Your actions will make a certain alignment an appropriate descriptor
not that your alignment must strictly define your actions
would a rapier + dagger dual welding psi warrior a bad idea?
Generally a pantheon is going to depend a campaign’s setting.
Overall Gods have been proven to exist in many settings though.
To dual wield in general both weapons need the light property.
dang
what con would i need for a fighter? im guessing 16/+3
Here is the details in case you need it https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Light
If you’re not in a group yet, use either standard array or point buy.
im mostly familar with the rules its just i usually play spell casters and monk which didnt need that much high con
ik barbarian probably wants 18 or even higher
but idk about fighter
For fighters you’ll to prioritize strength or dexterity, after that constitution.
how about psi warriors?
i mostly want to use a rapier so dex ik that
ik psi uses int
and con too in general
nvm i think i got the general stats now
We’ll constitution determines your HP, so all classes want to give it some priority.
would 14/+2 be good enough for a psi warrior?
since its a m.a.d class its kinda hard to do it

omg i just realized this is newcomers and not character discussion ;-;
Hi, I’m completely new to DnD. I don’t have any group or friends to play the game with. Does anyone know how to find online groups or local groups with people around my age?
There’s a lfg area of the server where you can find online games. Do you have any gaming stores near you?
I think so, I don’t know for sure but I live in a city area so I’m sure there’s one somewhere
In addition to what was posted above , I recommend Adventurers League https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081
the sever has multiple channels dedicated to AL like #adventurers-league
Schools, libraries, and tabletop shops tend to host youth dnd programs. So you can start there.
Or, make a group with your friends
For groups in age ranges close to yours, they’ll often post age range requirements
That’s fine, happy to help
-# oh so that's what AL means
Yep.
I personally recommend it for new players
Adventurer's League. Wizard of the Coast's official organized play sessions
Usually run at your FLGS (Friendly Local Game Shop)
So I’m new to DND should there be 2 DMs
Whaaa? 2 DMs why?
Not usually.
If the group is super big, people sometimes do that. Or if the DMs have something in mind. But it is unusual
Ive played with 1 2 and 3 dms before
But like a main one and then one for when he’s writing and we’re bored
And want to play
I mean i suppose there isn't any reason why they can't have a writing partner
The only reason ive had 2 dms is bc we were in school and incase the main dm was sick we had a side dm
Okay thanks because I am making a campaign for my friends and my one of my friends is usually taking forever to write
It’s an mmo style of play where you usually play each session with a different DM and different players. With each session focusing on a self contained adventure that you beat in a single session that lasts 2- 4 hours usually.
Sounds like a west Marches style of campaign would fit your group then?
I wouldn't consider AL like an MMO at all. But otherwise, yes, it does lean toward one-shots
i get what they mean
True. Though I’m not sure what a closer comparison would be.
For the pick up group aspect, yes. Though if we're sticking with the MMO comparison, most communities are probably closer to a set guild. Where you're often playing with the same people, even if it's not the same exact configuration every time.
And you can run full campaigns in AL as well
ok.
I tend to consider AL to be new player friendly because you don’t have to learn homebrew on top of the core rules.
Plus in between sessions you can rebuild your character. So you can definitely experiment with different play styles
That I do agree with. It's a good way to dip your toes in and either stick with the pickup version or potentially find a set group to play with later on
Yea, my current dnd group was from from people I played before in AL.
i suppose if i ever did want to make Grimm in D&D that would help me narrow down the specifics
When shifting to a home campaign, our group didn’t have to deal with some of the growing pains that you usually run into. Mostly because each of has has played with other from different sessions.
I've got a set group that just stuck with AL rules because we like it, but we're going 7+ years strong at this point. No arguing about whether some new homebrew or 3rd party option should be included or not 😁
And it's great for people like me who prefer to switch between characters a lot
Right?!
Running AL adapted campaigns is real fun.
So this is the first time I’m going to be a dungeon master how would I go about creating a fun campaign for my players
remember it's not a game where you're trying to win, but where you and the players are having fun.
Communicate with your group beforehand to establish clear expectations.
For example, how much time does everyone want to commit to?
It's also important to discuss what kind of game you want to play in advance
Yeah, compatibility is paramount.

like what most of that up there probs says.
This video also helped me as a DM https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4?si=EXkvUMD6-yFK3Bz1
so i have bin reading and looking watching videos i cant find some stuff and most dont make sense to me LOL
Okay, let's start small.
What is one thing you would like to learn about?
i rememeber some stuff
but mostly stat buffs and skills and i cant find the hp of a half dragon
armor class and initieve?
?tag new AC
No tag AC found in category new.
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack roll, the attack hits if the roll equals or exceeds the target’s AC.
so is the question what is AC and initiative?
Initiative is smt you roll at the beginning of combat to determine the turn order. The higher you roll, the earlier you go
no what my ac be
Do you mean dragonborn?
cuz on my last character it was 11 but i cant find it now
no
That depends on what armour you're wearing if at all
(plus other specific features and shields)
Half Dragon isn't a standard race option for player characters
So it doesn't have set default stats for that
my dm said dragon borns cant be looking human bruh
Default: 10 plus your Dexterity Modifier.
Armor: Changes the calculation. Examples include Leather saying 11 + Dexterity modifier, so leather does that, whereas Plate just says 18.
Other Factors: If something says so, it says so. For example, if you play as a Barbarian, you get a class feature that says you get to calculate your AC as 10 + Dexterity modifier + Constitution modifier.
If you're reading things from random wikis, that may be what is causing confusion.
So are you actually talking about dragonborn after all?
Well, if you're looking at a "half dragon" race/species, that is someone's homebrewed content.
Okay, then you'll have to ask your DM what race/stats they're using for that
It isn't a standard player option
Though HP itself is primarily based on your class and Constitution score, whatever half dragon they're using could have something HP related
Yeah, homebrew stuff is going to be DM dependent and they'll be the only ones you can go to about that.
The question for this is... why? What reason? Dragonborn already don't look human, they have scales and different shaped head
I think they're wanting to look human, if I'm understanding correctly
yes
that's my understanding too
Though half dragons are generally pretty scaley too if I'm remembering my lore right
This channel is more dedicated to the official rules of dnd from the official sourcebooks.
thanks :/
If your DM has decided that half dragons can look human, then in their world they are
i kinda like how dragonborn look tho ngl
But we still can't tell you what their stats would be
got it cant play my character :/
def would have to ask your dm.
You can play your character. You just need to talk to your DM
i did
Nothing we say here should have any effect on you playing your character
he said play half dragon never said anything about that
so i did reaserch basicly nothing came up
Then he may also be confused. But you'll still have to ask him what version he wants you to play
yeah
2012 5e
There is no default half dragon we can point you too
5e has never had a player option for that
Only a monster template
5e didn't even exist in 2012? It came out around 2014.
is your DM also new to D&D?
oh mb 2014
no
man i can't believe those books are ten/eleven years old now
Well they seem pretty confused about dragonborn and such
?
If they told you to play a half dragon instead of a dragonborn, they must have been thinking of something
sorceror?
Draconic sorcerer would probably be the closest
they have a dragon thingie
Draconic Bloodline subclass for Sorcerer. Magical power because of a titular Draconic Bloodline.
Draconic Bloodline Sorceror
oh
i think some of the flavor text said they can have some scales?
don't quote me on that though
what level do i get that?
it's a subclass right?
yes
In 2014 rules, were sorcerers level 2 for subclasses? I actually can't remember now
There's nothing specific for being a dragon slayer. That would be far too niche. Imagine having to fight bandits and undead and other beastly monstrous monsters... things specific to slaying dragons would be less than useful against non dragons, after all.
idk how sub classes work 😭
dragon slayer's more an occupation tbh
Sorcs got level 1 subclass in '14
When the class tells you you get subclass things, you get subclass things
What things depends on the subclass you pick
subclasses are just... variants of the main class. specifics
like 'instead of doing x they do y'
If using 2014 rules, you get it at level 1, 2024 rules you get it at level 3 https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4?si=EXkvUMD6-yFK3Bz1
yeah i figured it was first or third level
okay where do i put it then?
*For certain classes! Like Sorcerer and Cleric at level 1
technically any class can be a dragon slayer if they, well
The class progression says you choose a Subclass.
At certain class levels, you get "Subclass Features". You get the ones of the subclass you chose.
For example, you choose Draconic Bloodline, as a Sorcerer.
At Sorcerer Level 6, the Sorcerer Features Table says you get "Subclass feature". You get the appropriate stuff from Draconic Bloodline for that level.
slay dragons.
though starting at level 1 i'd say maybe you should go 'aspiring dragon slayer' lol
i ment dragon slayer in like fairy tail (the anime)
You... wouldn't put that anywhere, really? It would serve no purpose, and has no mechanical precedent/effect.
Additionally, starting at level one... yeah, you're not exactly in the "I have killed dragons" business yet.
which means... what, exactly?
humans taught dragon slayer magic (just magic but like ampd to 11) by dragons :3
If you want to be a human with dragon themed powers, the closest options I can think of would be Draconic Sorcerers or Drakewarden Rangers (they have a dragon companion). And perhaps more importantly, whichever one of those you actually have access to the content for.
My recommendation is making a dnd character, not an anime character
yeah honestly this. Integrally, a written story without mechanical structure can just go freeform.
In D&D, we have mechanical rules to establish precedents and likely chances and so on.
basing a character off an idea is fine. just don't play them like they're in taht anime instead of D&D
Precisely
draconic sorc might be an entry you want to look at tho. It's in the phb isn;'t it for 2014?
I think it was the free rules option for 2014 sorcerers, yeah
yeah phb as in the basic rules/default book
before all the extras came out
oh that's cool
Basic rules has less than the PHB. So if you're looking for free the distinction matters
ah that's what you mean.
Your best bet will be to look at D&D mechanics and see what kind of character fantasy you want to evoke, instead of trying to immediately cram in a character fantasy from any other medium.
is there a ranger type taht uses arcane instead of divine magic btw
and i don't mean like 'arcane archer'
random sorry but yeah.
No, the Ranger class is essentially half fighter half druid-magic.
just making sure. lol
sometimes you get some strange subclasses
i could make it work for this one idea i have then.
For divine type magic you could muticlass but that is recommended after you gain some experience with the ranger and cleric class.
Huh. Yeah the only 'arcane' style half caster would be artificer, but kind of a stretch...
eh my idea isn't the artificer type of guy
I have a question. So I’m new to d&d and want to be a dungeon master for my friends. The problem is I’m not too sure how to come up with the story line or what I’m supposed to do in order for it to make sense
anyway, back to basics. First, outline what key parts you want for a character.
-# writes that down tho

yeah they're interesting
Start with a one shot pre-written adventure.
?tag ddb claim

Hello, so i'm completly new to dnd, and i've never participated in a game of dnd or know much about the genre at all. Am i supposed to make a charactar before joining a dnd campaign or after, and how can i join a dnd party? I'm like completly clueless..
And in doing so
with new players, you're all essentially tutorializing each-other, together.
with experienced players, they can help you in figuring out your DMing as well.
Some possible modules too
Typically, making a character is done specifically for a game, as a DM may have specific character creation rules, or desire/offer certain influences in the backstory.
First of all, i recommend reading #learn-to-play and the first two chapters of the basic rules.
Second, i recommend making a character for practice, but you should make a character that fits with a DM’s campaign and world. So you’ll often make one after you join a campaign.
I see
And feel free to ask any questions!
Thank you, i'll make sure to read the first two chapters of the basic rules
Nothing wrong with making a character or characters as idle theorycrafting and to help practice understanding the rules
Think of it like "Rubber Duck"-ing the rules.
How may i find a campaign to join?
Check out #find-a-game
OR look at your local library or games store
i do like making things.
